Good day Africa, Hello Nigeria. When the world chanted "Happy New Year. . ." greetings as the clock struck 12:00am in various parts of the world on January 1, 2020, we assumed, without questioning that, indeed, 2020 would be a "happy, New Year". Some individuals even ventured to display phrases such as: “2020 is my year of greater exploits”; “2020 is my year to capture & conquer”, etc, on their WhatsApp’s status. Has it been a happy new year for Nigeria? Has it been a Pleasant new year for China, Japan, South Korea, Italy, USA? Just to mention a few. Has it been a happy (2020) New year for the world? The first disaster that struck Nigeria, and indeed, West Africa was the unexpected closure of Nigeria’s borders by the Federal government. This singular act reduced across-border business in Nigeria by 90%. The only “winner” in this scenerio is the Nigeria Customs services, and maybe, the Federation Account. I said : “maybe”.In a continent where policies can be implemented over-night, it is tragic for a nation’s borders to be closed without prior notice or prior warning. Imagine if good ol' USA closed its border overnight. Imagine what the rest of the world would say. Today's children will grow up to read civics books and history books which would tell them that - one of the benefits of ECOWAS is the free movement of its members, goods, and services. Today, however that this books are being re-written. Citizens of member states who are trying to cross Nigeria’s borders are forced to sleep, for days, at borders; Nigeria's borders, without sympathy, but with profound impunity and arrogance, even with countless pleas from presidents of member-states. The border closure has given rise to many prophesies with their share of pundits . There are many who foretold when the borders will be opened. They have all failed in their predictions. People are hurting, Africans are hurting, people of ECOWAS states are hurting. What's the essence of ECOWAS without the benefit of smooth border crossing? The debacle of the novel Coronavirus Pandemic is the most disturbing global disaster of the day. More damaging than SARS and Ebola, the paranoia or fear that the threat of Coronavirus evocks is of unprecedented magnitude. The feeling in the world today is that of - the fear of Coronavirus is the beginning of wisdom.Economists have placed the projected value of loss to the global economy, as a result of the Covid-19, at trillions of dollars. With millions of people already infected, and over 373 thousand dead, as at the first week of June 2020, there is fear everywhere. The tourism and aviation industries alone stand to lose billions of dollars. The beauty industry, particularly the Make-up sector is in a dilemma. The hair industry will continue to survive, even if not at a level of a bumper harvest. The hair industry which includes Manufacturers , Distributors, Salons, and Beauty schools, are going through a turbulent transformation of some sort. Manufacturers now operate at a maximum of 50% capacity, after being told by the government to reduce their work force by 60% for the purpose of social distancing; distributors now open shops three days a week, and at half their usual working-time before Covid-19. Salons in Lagos and other major cities are officially closed until further notice. Salon patrons now sneak into salons that are clandestinely opened against government’s order. Their revenues, at best, would have gone down by over 80%. This is the new reality in the Beauty industry. Notwithstanding, better days are ahead. Life Goes On, we must say.

Life Lesson From

THE CORONAVIRUS There are no roses without thorn. We are bound to live with both. So, Coronavirus brought the world a Pandemic; together with its share of crisis. It caused the world to impose lockdown ; job losses, pay cuts, closure of schools, churches, mosques, clubs hotels, bars, event centres, etc. The beauty in all of these, if the truth be said, is - it gave families the opportunity to bond again. Husbands, wives and children now get to see as well as enjoy one another, like never before experienced. For now, gone are the days when absentee fathers who stay away from home, claiming to be at at work, till 11pm, before coming home, long after their children must have gone to bed. On a philosophical note, the period also gave adults the opportunity to reflect. Reflections on life. One area of thought which the writer ventured to delve into is:- What are you working for... if you can't enjoy yourself? This thought forces the individual to think deeper into why he or she works, and of what use is it to work if one cannot enjoy one's self, while working. It is a common knowledge that life is short. Therefore, it is appropriate for one to enjoy, even as one works. Delays can be catastrophic. Why defer of postpone enjoyment when tomorrow may not come? –

C

omedians have cracked numerous jokes about men who take their ladies out( especially on rst dates) to top class restaurants as a treat; for the ladies; at the man’s expense and detriment. The man not wanting the bill to run too high or to level of “times 2”, he will allow the lady to choose any item on the menu, regardless of the cost. And when it’s time for the man make to place his own order, he chuckles, and says, he is watching his weight, and therefore, opts for the cheapest item on the menu. There is this weird story of a man who doesn’t want to spend on himself. A man who doesn’t want to enjoy himself. He forbids enjoyment. A story was told to me by the lawyer of a famous wealthy man who lived in the eastern part of the country, Nigeria. His wife went to a local market to shop for food items. Upon her return, the rich man strolled into the cooking section of the kitchen. He was curious enough to ask the wife who had bought two sets of sh; a very big and a medium sized one. The smaller one, it turned out, was the more expensive. The man demanded to know the difference in price. The smaller sh was 4 times more expensive. When he demanded to know the difference in benets, the humble house wife told the man that the smaller sh is more delicious, tastes better, had less bones, and betting of man of his billionaire status. The man wouldn’t have that excuse. He was furious. Loaded with anger. Chastised the wife for being a squander-mania. Went to the extent of telling the woman to go back to the

market and return the smaller sh, and substitute it for the bigger one because it was cheaper, and secondly there were no visitors scheduled for their home waiting to be impressed. The embarrassed woman stylishly walked away, pretended to be in compliance, just to evade her husband. She saved the sh, and used it to cook for herself and her children; a secret which her husband never knew about until he died a few short years later. The lesson is clear. The billionaire husband who had worked hard all his life, could not see the need to enjoy himself. In many ways, this is what happens in most homes, particularly in third world countries. Their defense is that, they are trying to save for the rainy day. Or they want to save for posterity or legacy or for the sake of leaving an inheritance. Good points. Good argument. But what about the consequences of failing to pamper thyself? A foolish act that actually leads to the demise or premature exit of the miser. Many, who are very rich, and could even afford treatment in top notch hospitals, opt for treatment in the hands of quacks and bush doctors. They would rather drink mixtures of known herbs or fake drugs. It is a common knowledge that life is short. Therefore, it is appropriate for one to enjoy, even as one works. Delays can be catastrophic. Why defer of postpone

“MARRY YOUR MATE” One of the ways your marriage will not add to the rate of divorce in our world today is for you to marry your mate and if you are married already, make your spouse your mate! You see that statement of ‘ Am I your mate?’ does not apply in marriage. You must marry your mate. I will like to talk on seven dimensions you and the person you want to marry or you have married must be mate. 1. MARRY_YOUR_SPEAKING_MATE Marry someone you can speak together and understand each other. Communication is very crucial in marriage. Don’t marry someone that, when you are saying ‘A’ he or she will be saying ‘ Z’ Once there is dichotomy in your speaking and understanding level, you can’t enjoy that marriage. So many men go to bar to hang out with friends and gist till 11pm because they know their wives can’t engage in any meaningful intellectual discussion. So many women too prefer to hang out with their friends, because they know their husbands mentality when it comes to vital issues and discussions is very low. Marry your speaking Mate. 2. MARRY_YOUR_SCHOOL_MATE By this I mean, marry someone you can learn together and improve together. Don’t marry ‘ Mr Know all’ or ‘Miss Know all’. Don’t marry someone who is rigid and not open to new ideas, new ways of doing things, or new innovations. Marriage is a great institution. From day one till death do you part, you will keep learning. Marry your ‘school’ mate; someone who is ready to learn with you. 3. MARRY_YOUR_SPIRITUAL_MATE Marriage is not just a social union. It is also a spiritual union. Marry someone who knows the same God you know. Don’t marry someone who’s believe of God is different from yours. Two can’t work together except they be agreed ( Amos 3:3, Joshua 23: 11-15, 2 Corinthians 6:14-18). The spiritual controls the physical, even in marriage. Check for spiritual compatibility in that person you want to marry. 4. MARRY_YOUR_SPENDING_MATE Don’t marry someone who is stingy. There are so many expenses to cater for in marriage. A stingy guy in courtship won’t suddenly become a generous husband in marriage. Don’t marry a lady that has the financial philosophy of ‘ My husband’s money is our money, but my money is my money’. Marry someone who believes in dignity of labour , who is ready to work, not a lazy fellow who just want to be a consumer and not a contributor. Marry someone who is ready to spend and be spent for the growth and success of the family. 5. MARRY_YOUR_SEX_MATE Marry someone you have sexual feelings for. Sexual feeling is not a sin. It is an instinct God put in every person. Sex plays a major role in the success of any marriage. Any man you don’t have emotional feelings for, don’t marry the person. If you don’t have emotional feelings for that lady, leave her alone. A spiritual being is also a sexual being. No matter how spiritual you both may be in your marriage, you won’t be praying for 24 hours in a day. You won’t be reading the Bible or worshiping God 24/7. You will have sex! You will romance! You will flirt with each other! You will make babies. So, marry someone you can connect with sexually. It will help you to enjoy your marriage so much! 6. MARRY_YOUR_SOCIAL_MATE Don’t marry someone you won’t be proud to go out with. Don’t marry someone you will be feeling shy to introduce to people with boldness. Marry someone you are comfortable to hang out with. Marry someone you are socially compatible with. Don’t marry an anti- social person. You might be wondering if you can find all the ‘mates’ in one person. Yes! The answer is YES! You don’t need to marry 6 guys/ladies to have all these mates. One person can be all that for you. If you also work on yourself and build your life, you can be all that for the guy/lady that will marry you. The promise of God for you is this : ‘Seek and read from the book of the LORD: Not one of these shall be missing; none shall be without her mate. For the mouth of the LORD has commanded, and his Spirit has gathered them.’ (Isaiah 34:16). Say it loud and clear ‘ I shall not lack a mate!’ I hope this blessed someone reading?

How Vitamin E Can Benefit Your Hair What is vitamin E known for? Vitamin E is best known for its antioxidant properties that help reduce free radical damage and protect the body’s cells. Although you can nd it in the supplement aisle, many companies add vitamin E to their beauty products. And for good reason! Vitamin E has been used in dermatology since the 1950s to help protect the skin against aging, inammation, and sun damage. The fatsoluble antioxidant is vital for maintaining healthy skin and a strong immune system. Recently, vitamin E has been hailed as a cureall to turn frizzy, damaged, unmanageable hair into shiny, luscious locks worthy of a shampoo commercial — or a sun-soaked Instagram image. Keep reading to learn how the skin-boosting properties of vitamin E may be used to improve hair health and promote growth. What can vitamin E do for your hair? Early research suggests that vitamin E can help improve overall scalp and hair health. More studies are needed to truly understand its possible benets. Prevent hair loss A small trial from 2010Trusted Source found that vitamin E supplements improved hair growth in people with hair loss. It’s thought that the vitamin’s antioxidant properties helped reduce oxidative stress in the scalp. Oxidative stress has been linked with hair lossTrusted Source. Improve scalp circulation Vitamin E may increase blood flow, which is said to improve hair health. Researchers in one 1999 study

found that high doses of vitamin E increased blood flow to the eyes in people with type 1 diabetes. A separate 2001 studyTrusted Source found that increased blood supply encouraged hair growth and increased the hair follicle and size in mice. However, more research is needed to see if vitamin E directly affects blood supply to the scalp and if so, what that means for hair growth. Balance oil production Vitamin E is important for creating a protective barrier on the skin’s surface. This barrier helps lock in moisture. Dry, irritated skin can be a sign of vitamin E deficiency. Although it’s unclear whether topical vitamin E can balance out scalp oil production, oils that contain vitamin E — like avocado oil — may help moisturize the scalp. They may also help prevent excess oil production. Add shine Hair can look dull and frizzy when it’s damaged. When the protective fat layer on the outside of the hair’s cuticle is removed, it loses its shine and becomes difficult to manage or style according to the Academy of Dermatology. A vitamin E-rich oil can help replace that protective layer and bring back shine. Oil in general also helps seal out moisture, reduce breakage, and protect the hair from damageTrusted Source. Support a healthy scalp Vitamin E is essential for healthy skin — and this includes your scalp. Poor scalp health is linked to lackluster hair qualityTrusted Source. Vitamin E supports the scalp and gives your hair a strong base to grow from by reducing oxidative stress and preserving the protective lipid layer.

How to use vitamin E for your hair The good news is that vitamin E is easy to get through a balanced diet. In fact, a vitamin E deciency is extremely rare, because most people get plenty throughout the day from whole and enriched foods. But if you want to specically target your hair, vitamin E can also be applied topically with a shampoo, conditioner, mask, or oil.

Diet What you eat — and how much — is crucial for healthy hair. A lack of calories, protein, or micronutrients like vitamin E can impactTrusted Source your hair’s growth, structure, and loss. Nuts, leafy greens, olive oil, and sunflower oil are some of the richest sources of vitamin E. It’s also found in meats and fortified foods like breakfast cereal. Supplements Although supplements are readily available, they aren’t necessary. Most people get enough vitamin E through diet alone. Some researchTrusted Source even suggests that people benefit more from vitamin E when they get it through whole foods rather than a supplement. Supplements can also put you at risk of ge ing too much vitamin E, which can be dangerous. You should always talk to your healthcare provider before starting a new supplement. Vitamin E oil Most vitamin E oils contain a carrier oil to dilute the oil and help prevent skin irritationTrusted Source. If you want use pure vitamin E oil, be sure to properly dilute the oil before use. That said, vitamin E oils are often expensive and can be difficult to work with — they’re usually thick and oxidize quickly when exposed to air. To get the most out of the vitamin E-rich oil: Ÿ Massage it onto your scalp. Ÿ Gently comb through with a wide-tooth comb. Ÿ Let the oil sit for at least 15 minutes. Ÿ When you’re done, wash the oil out of your hair with your regular shampoo.

Ÿ If your hair already feels well moisturized, you can

skip conditioner. Shampoo and conditioner Looking for a treatment you can do more often without adding time to your routine? Many shampoos and conditioners include vitamin E. These products are formulated for frequent use and are often made for dry, damaged hair. It’s best to let the product sit for a few minutes while you continue with your shower routine to help the product work its way into the hair and scalp. Look for products that contain essential oils like lavender, peppermint, or tea tree oil for added hair benefits. Hair mask Much like the kind you would put on your face, a hair mask is meant to soothe or treat the scalp. Although vitamin E oil may help moisturize your locks, the strands of your hair can’t be “healed” by it. Instead, focus the mask on your scalp where it can be absorbed. To make an easy mask rich in vitamin E at home, combine the following ingredients in a blender: Ÿ 1 avocado Ÿ 1 banana Ÿ 1 tbsp. avocado oil Ÿ 1 tbsp. coconut oil Ÿ 1 tbsp. honey

Vitamin E can be a great addition to your haircare arsenal, and you don’t need a fancy product to do so! The foods in your fridge are a great place to start. Although you can find plenty of products that include the powerful antioxidant, it’s best to talk to your healthcare provider before using a vitamin E treatment or taking a supplement, especially if you have a hair, skin, or scalp condition.

HAIRCARE TIPS AMID

COVID-19 PANDEMIC We have seen the impacts of COVID-19 on our daily lives but now as we go into our first full month of trying to flatten the curve, we are seeing how the virus is also impacting our long term personal care appointments. In the mean time many are wondering what are those next steps as we try to maintain our hair? Angie Shetler has been a hair stylist for over 24 years. Currently, she has a booth at Shoobeedoo's in Goshen off of Main Street where she hasn't had any appointments in the last 2 weeks and won't be scheduling any for at least a month out. "I have been out of work now for two week. We closed the salon down due to social distancing." says Shetler, "I am not making any money and still owe money because we pay booth rent." Shetler is praying for President Trump's trillion dollar stimulus package for some extra money to help with her expenses while she is out of work. Her worry is not only for her and her own family, but also for her many clients. As we are still having to push appointments further and further away, Shetler wants to remind her and all clients to be patient with their professionals as they try to prioritize and schedule appointments to help make sure everyone is covered.

Until that tim e com es, "I would just encourage you to take really good care of it and do as little as you can possibly get by with" says Shetler. For men, things are a little easier with their shorter hair. They have the option to go the store or buy online a clipper with various attachments to get your hair back to your preferred length. For women, however, cutting, let alone dying, come with a lot more anxiety when trying to do it to yourself or to a friend or loved one. "This could be a time where you grow your hair out and take really good care of it, use really good conditioning on it and give it a break from the straighteners and curling irons.” Or if you are wanting to trim things up, make sure to know whether your hair is cut bluntly or with layers. If you are going to try your hand at dying, Shetler recommends trying to match the product you buy as closely as you can with the product your professional uses. Always go lighter versus darker because fixing hair thats a little to light is a lot easier than lightening hair that got to dark. If you have any questions or concerns on what to do with your hair always call your stylist before doing anything to drastic.
