Generally, it is a known tradition to expect a boom in sales or a bumper harvest in the month of February - courtesy of Valentine's Day celebration. Everyone in the hair industry usually look forward to Valentine season's sales. It is the boost that uplifts the Hair industry after the null or sluggish sales period which follows Christmas & New year heavy sales. Entered 2019 Nigeria's general election. Unlike other festive periods that boost hair sales, general elections lead to or begets poor sales. Consumers often hold back on spending, and they put the art-of-looking good on hold. The most recent general elections in Nigeria caused sales in the Hair industry to drop or fall by about 55%. The economic value of Valentine season in 2019 was lost or disappeared. Industry watchers were forced to hinge their hopes on 2019 Easter to provide succour; big or small, local or international dealers, including the Chinese distributors and Manufacturers - all are still languishing in the pool of poor-sales. There is a consolation. Beauty business is good business It never remains in dire situation for too long. After the swearing-in of our re-elected President, and all other Political OfďŹ ce Holders, we expect the "dead bones" to rise again. We expect boom for the Beauty Economy, and the Hair Industry shall be much better for it.

Industry News Not too long after the world and the hair industry in particular ushered in the new year 2019, precisely - Fire gutted a factory owned by Godrej, makers of Darling Hair products located at Oba Akran Rd in Ikeja. The damage was severe and extensive. Initial report had it that, the fire started at the driver's unit in the factory, where women's hair extensions and cosmetics are manufactured. Commendation was given to the Ikeja Fire service unit and many others who came to the aid of the factory by way of putting out the fire. But for the support rendered the damage would have been far more catastrophic.

PREMARITAL SEX AND ITS PREVALENCE IN THE AFRICAN SOCIETY

uman culture in the 21st century has been transformed by a revolution in sexual values. Promiscuity is regarded by many as a virtue to pursue. Children who do not engage in premarital sex are perceived by their peers as stupid, boring and unsophisticated, with that the result is that children are trying sex at earlier ages than ever before. Premarital sex is sexual intercourse engaged in by a person or persons who are not yet married. It is generally used in reference to young people who are presumed to be of marriageable age, or will one day be married, but who are engaging in sexual practices prior to their being sanctioned within a marriage. Adolescence is a stage which human beings face once throughout a lifetime. This stage serves as a threshold for biological, physical, psychological and social developments which are accompanied by either positive or negative behaviours depending on the environment that the child is brought-up

In virtually all African society ,the sacredness of the female being a virgin on her wedding night was a thing of pride and joy. The giddiness of giving the most beautiful female out for marriage was eclipsed by the confirmation by the groom's family that the daughter that just joined the family stained the bed sheets on her first night of marriage. The intactness of the bride not made her family trust worthy and respected but it also guaranteed that any female from that family will command a high bride price and will also have a good chance of getting married to a reputable family in future. It was as if the family of the bride were specialist is producing qualitative brides who have never been stained. This practice of the upholding of the virtues of not having premarital sex has however gradually been eroded in the African setting as each decade surpasses another decade and the juggernaut called the Earth continues to achieve globalization status. The emphasis on pre marital sex has diminished in a world where transgender, Lesbianism, gayness and bi sexualism have come to be accepted as a norm. What is one female who has had multiple sexual partners got to hold up against a two male priest getting married in the church by an ordained female priest? The honest truth or put more succinctly reality is that the emphasis on premarital sex as a taboo in the African environment has been

greatly diminished in recent years due to the effect of globalization, neo colonization and the cultivation theory. Just like the Romans changed the various innovations of the Greeks when they became the world super power , the foreign ways of life has permeated the African society to such an extent that any individual that tries to uphold the typical African tradition is seen backward, illiterate, uneducated and to an extreme downright stupid.

We now live in a society where it is "local" to speak the traditional African language but hip to learn foreign languages. Having sex before marriage is seen as an experience that must be explored through multiple avenues before settling on one person who will be the life partner. The mentality has also changed drastically that we are left to wonder where we went wrong. Young men do not look forward to marrying virgins as wives anymore as they see the process of trying to inculcate in the virgin the various practices in the art of sex as cumbersome and time wasting. They would prefer someone who is not a virgin but knows the intricacies of love making. The women do not want to be virgins on their wedding night because they have to know and they have to have explored the various sex styles available before marriage. They see it as living their life to the fullest before the they enter the prison called marriage. This of course is a far cry from the old days where there was a sense of pride in a man meeting his woman as a virgin and a woman seeing herself stain the bed sheet on her first night of sexual action. The African society has been cultivated to an extent that imitation of the American and European way of life is the only logical and acceptable thing. This can be seen in African movie making where sex is now being shown and promoted. In Nollywood in the 70s,80s,90s and the early part of the 21st century, there were virtually no sex scenes in movies but the cultivation effect has taken place in the African media where there is now an imitation of the American and European ways of movie making where sex scenes are shot. African movie never showed even kissing, now they show nudity and it is the norm. The media focuses more and more upon the sensual. African youth are exposed to sex and related matters through the medium of newspapers, television, pornographic videos, Internet, radio and various magazines. Explicit sex videos and DVDs are the most popular sellers on the market. They also receive mixed messages from the media. In any given week, they are

likely to hear contradictory messages such as 'No sex until you're married', 'No sex until you are older', 'No sex unless you're protected' or 'No sex unless you're in love'. These messages are very much confusing. All good things have their bad side and the internet is not exempted from this. Prior to the data revolution in Nigeria for example, the consumption of pornography was well below 5% as people didn't have access to the internet as it was expensive. Fast forward to the present were a thousand naira can get at least a gigabyte of data, the consumption of pornography has skyrocketed to 250% to such an extent that just it is just one google search away. The consumption of pornography has taken away the sacredness of sex as everyone now has seen it and want to try it. Fashion in clothing is also another contributing to the pervasive emphasis on sex amongst the youths. These days it is difficult to find clothes for teenage girls that are not revealing or tightfitting. This makes girls more willing to flaunt their bodies and makes them vulnerable to sexual predators that are willing to buy them expensive clothes in exchange for sexual favours.There is a high correlation between alcohol and sexual experiences. A number of African youngsters, especially those coming from rural areas, tend to become involved in drugs and alcohol abuse immediately after they enter tertiary education institutions. It is very difficult for these youth to control their sexual drives when they are under the influence of drugs and alcohol. The bottom line is that African tradition which condemns the need of premarital sex was never going to win against the juggernaut of globalization and foreign influence. This is a war that will see the tradition of not having sex smothered out or else it can adapt. African parents now have to realise that emphasis on premarital sex as being bad will not work but rather there should be an adaptation process where African children are enlightened about premarital sex and what can be done if it ever want to occur so as to avoid pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases. The main problem is that sex is not spoken about publicly in the traditional African society which is why HIV/AIDS gained such traction in the first place. We must not shy away from the discussion of sex or premarital sex in Africa, the only way to deal with this menace is to talk about it with African children.

They will recognize this routine and know it’s you. Make up words for eating or sleeping, as your baby will start recognizing these words and understand what you’re saying. 6. BODY MASSAGE Babies love massages and this is a great way to develop a bond with them. Studies has shown that massaging your baby goes a long way in bonding with them and reduces premature stress. 7. KEEP THEM CLOSE Close proximity of a parent makes the baby feel secure. Ensure you stay close to them and keep their cradle next to your bed. If he/she is playing on a mat, make sure you’re there next to her.

West Africa The Least Trade Integrated Region In The World — Report The Economic Community of West Africa States, ECOWAS, is the least integrated region in the world in terms of cross border trade, a report by the Borderless Alliance group has said.

“In international trade, there are no restrictions but standards must be met, the same best practices on transit that are applicable in East Africa must be applicable in West Africa.

According to the report, the non- application of ECOWAS directives relating to free movement of goods and people, ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme, ETLS, and the Common External Tariff, CET, are some of the factors responsible for the low level of trade integration in the region.

“Burkina and Togo are inter-connected, Burkina- Cote Ivoire is also inter- connected and this has reduced the cost of trade between these countries.”

Other factors militating against trade in the region include the high cost of transport & logistics, Long delays at ports and borders, harassment along transit corridors, mainly from uniformed services and corruption. Speaking at a one day workshop on dissemination and launch of the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme handbook, Mr Justin Bayili, Executive Secretary, Borderless Alliance said that while Europe recorded 71 per cent in intra-regional trade, Asia recorded 53 per cent, South America 48 per cent against 12 per cent recorded by the ECOWAS region. Bayili disclosed that East Africa is more integrated than its West African counterpart citing Customs interconnectivity for the success so far recorded in East Africa. ECOWAS calls for barrier elimination He stated: “We must work assiduously to reduce these unnecessary costs by eliminating all the barriers to trade and make our products more competitive in the international market. “Removing obstacles to intra-regional integration in the ECOWAS sub-region would be particularly beneficial to the small scale traders that conduct cross border commerce within the sub-region. “The potential benefits include food security, job creation, poverty reduction, increased tax revenues for authorities and long term development outcomes.”
