Leadership Excellence Institute Zeppelin | LEIZ Annual Report April 2014

“Good leadership and right decision-making

are the most important success factors for a rich life.

From my experience as an entrepreneur,

I know that leadership excellence requires

much more than a competent application

of business knowledge.” Prof. h.c. Dipl.-Ing. Karl Schlecht | founder of the Putzmeister Group, President Karl-Schlecht Foundation, and benefactor of the Leadership Excellence Institute Zeppelin | LEIZ

The “Leadership Excellence Institute Zeppelin | LEIZ” is sponsored by the Karl Schlecht Stiftung (KSG)

the institute

The “Leadership Excellence Institute | LEIZ” is a platform for interdisciplary, intersectoral, and intercultural research, teaching, and executive education on the challenges of leadership excellence in a globalized world. The LEIZ contributes to: Governance Economics, Organisation Theory, Business Ethics, Psychology of Ethical Decision-Making, and Leadership Ethics. It refers to normativity as an organizational governance challenge resulting from different social interests and expectations concerning the integrity of leadership decisions. Linked to that, it focuses on challenges of transcultural management based on the ability to develop global inter-organizational relationships. Leadership excellence, in this sense, can be understood as “mastery” of leaders to navigate confidently in this global system of transparency, inclusion and integrity, and to take the right decisions. The LEIZ was formally inaugurated on April 12th, 2013 as an expertise center on leadership at Zeppelin University.

Connection bet ween Research and Practice

The starting as well as reference point of LEIZ is practice-oriented research and the development of solutions for real societal problems. Its academic research is connected with continuing education, expert fora, and business services, which in turn provide new inspiration for academic research. Its approach is interdisciplinary, intesectoral, and international. Two academic chairs belong to LEIZ. Their responsibilities lie in developing and realizing teaching, research, and practiceoriented activities of the institute. The Chair “Institutional Economics – Organisational Governance, Integrity Management & Transcultural Leadership” is held by Prof. Dr. Josef Wieland who is also the director of LEIZ. The Chair for Psychology and Leadership Ethics will be appointed by autumn 2014.

“Leadership excellence as a

motivational competence depends on

a continuous learning process

for developing personal integrity,

transcultural competence, and character. Prof. Dr. Josef Wieland | Director LEIZ

Graduate School Ethics and Responsible Leadership

In January 2014, the “Leadership Excellence Institute Zeppelin LEIZ” and the Wittenberg Center for Global Ethics (WZGE) jointly established a Graduate School on “Ethics and Respon sible Leadership”. The discourse and doctoral platform is sponsored by the Karl Schelcht Foundation (KSG) and supports motivated and internationally oriented doctoral candidates who delve into questions of good management in global contexts. The program developed by Prof. Dr. Dr. Karl Homann (LMU, München), Prof. Dr. Dr. Dr. h. c. Christian Kirchner (HU, Berlin), Prof. Dr. Andreas Suchanek (HHL Leipzig), and Prof. Dr. Josef Wieland (ZU, Friedrichshafen), offers a unique platform for research in the field of economic and business ethics. It connects specific qualification of the graduate students with the expertise of leading business ethicists and encompasses practical fora, project studies, and lectures. The objective of this school is to compile theoretically grounded and practically relevant contributions for responsible management in global competition and thereby shape the discourse in academia, corporations, and the general public.
