WEEK 6 READING: SURFACES THAT CAN BE BUILT FROM PAPER IN ARCHITECTURAL GEOMETRY Question 1: What are the three elementary types of developable surfaces? Provide a brief description. (Maximum 100 words) There are cylinders, cones and tangent surface of space curves. Cylinder surfaces: formed by a famliy of parallel lines, modeled by having a profile curve extruded of a rarallel extrusion. Cones sonsists of all lines connecting a vertex point with a points on a profile curve. Tangent surfaces of space curves consists of a singular polygon with an intersection point in a general plane.
Question 2: Why is the understanding of developable surface critical in the understanding of architectural geometry? Choose one precedent from Research/Precedents tab on LMS as an example for your discussion. (Maximum 100 words) The greenhouse in Xi’an China use a horseshoe structure create a loop that changes radically in section to accommodate a series of unique planting and spatial conditions and lead to a gradually shifting between exterior and interior. As an application of developable surface, the horseshoe structure achieve it’s function of creating visual attraction and promote the relationship between interior and exterior space

WEEK 7 READING: DIGITAL FABRICATION Complete your reading before attempting these questions:
Question 1: What is digital fabrication and how does it change the understanding of two dimensional representation? (Maximum 100 words) Digital fabrication is a type of manfacturing process based on the design in digital media like computer. Digital fabrication have advantage in diemnsional respresentation than two dimensional hand drawing. Digital practices have the potential to narrow the gap between representation and building, affording a hypothetically seamless connection between design and making. It also demonstrate perspective in different angle which can help to explore or make analyzation during creation.
Question 2: Suggest two reasons why folding is used extensively in the formal expression of building design? (Maximum 100 words) The way that folding presents object is quite differene than other techniques. First, folding form a better understanding of object’s 2D version and 3D vernsion, which can help to understand the inner structure of object. Second, folding as handmade working process, can explore and evaluate the created object in order to make adjustment in further design. Furthermore, before the final design submit, folding is always a practical way to show the visual effects of design to others.
