Kevin Magnussen aura-t-il sa vengeance ? En 2012 au Hungaroring, le Danois avait perdu sa première place dans le dernier tour, suite à un problème mécanique, laissant Antonio Felix da Costa remporter son premier succès en Formula Renault 3.5 Series.

Last year at the Hungaroring, Kevin Magnussen lost the lead on the final lap of race two due to a mechanical problem, handing a maiden Formula Renault 3.5 Series win to Antonio Felix da Costa in the process. Can the Dane go the distance this time?

Que se passe-t-il ?

Je peux certifier que j'arrive sur un circuit avec le même état d'esprit que l'année dernière.

Nous travaillons dur pour être en pole et gagner mais nous avons commis quelques erreurs.

Je n'ai désormais pas d'autres options que de gagner !

Comment appréhendez-vous le meeting hongrois ?

Je préfère d’autres circuits mais nous avons l'air de bien nous entendre avec Budapest, une ville extraordinaire ! J'y ai remporté trois courses l'an passé, dont une en Formula Renault 3.5 Series. Donc je ne peux pas dire que je ne l'aime pas !

THE ARDEN CATERHAM DRIVER IS RETURNING TO THE SCENE OF HIS FIRST EVER FORMULA RENAULT 3.5 SERIES WIN. CURRENTLY FIFTH IN THE STANDINGS, THE PORTUGUESE SHARED HIS THOUGHTS WITH US BEFORE THE MEETING IN HUNGARY. You’ve had a bit of a struggle in 2013 after bursting on to the scene last year. Why is that?

I can honestly say that every time I arrive at the track I’m in the same frame of mind as I was last year. We’re working hard to get on pole and win races but we’ve made a few mistakes. I’ve got no other option now but to go out and win.

Comment se sont passés les essais jeunes pilotes de F1 avec Red Bull à Silverstone ?

C'était dur pour ma nuque mais le métier rentre ! Vous utilisez la tête plus que le talent pour vous adapter à la voiture. A moi de jouer maintenant pour avoir un brillant avenir en F1. Red Bull et moi le voulons.

How did it feel to go to Silverstone for the Formula One Young Driver Test with Red Bull?

It was tough on my neck but that’s how you learn. To adapt to the car you have to use your head more than your talent. It’s up to me now to push on and have a great career in F1. That’s what Red Bull and I both want.

How do you feel about the meeting in Hungary?

It’s not my favourite circuit but it’s always great to be in Budapest, which is a fantastic city! I won three races there last year, one of them in Formula Renault 3.5 Series, so I can hardly say that I dislike it either.

urant l'intersaison 20122013, le jeune britannique quittait Fortec pour Manor MP Motorsport à la stupeur des observateurs qui lui prédisaient alors le pire. « L’hiver a été délicat mais nous nous en sommes sortis. Je peux comprendre les doutes mais je me concentre sur ma saison et mon futur », assène le leader du championnat. « Je suis plus fort mentalement et physiquement. Je comprends mieux les moindres détails. » Vice-champion de Formule Renault britannique en 2011 puis troisième de l’Eurocup en 2012, Oliver Rowland n’hésitait pas à redoubler. « La nouvelle Formula Renault 2.0 représente un pas en avant et le niveau est extrêmement serré », explique le Britannique. « Si je veux être le meilleur, je dois faire mes preuves face aux meilleurs. L’Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 est le bon choix. J’ai beaucoup appris et il est temps de jouer le championnat. » Discret, l’espoir d’outre-Manche n’en est pas moins impliqué, souvent présent aux contrôles techniques avec l’équipe. Son team manager, Sander Dorsman, détaille : « Oliver vit près de l’usine ce qui est bien tant pour Manor

MP Motorsport que pour lui. Il passe beaucoup de temps à préparer les meetings. C’est la base de son succès jusqu’ici et cela l’aide à grandir comme pilote et comme homme. » Opposé à Pierre Gasly, Oliver Rowland possède avant la Hongrie un avantage de 17 points, mais il temporise : « Jusqu’ici, tout va bien et je suis content de mener.

L’équipe a fait un travail parfait.

Mais nous devons garder les pieds sur terre car beaucoup de choses peuvent arriver. » Rowland sait que les enjeux sont grands. « Il y aura beaucoup de pression. Le titre fera une grande différence. Sans la bourse, qui sait ce que Gasly et moi ferons l’an prochain ? », s'interroge le Britannique. « La clé sera la vitesse en qualifications. Si nous sommes devant, je terminerai le travail sans problème. »

“I can understand why some people might have doubts, but I’m focusing on my season and my future. I’m stronger mentally and physically and I’ve got a better understanding of the finer details.”

A runner-up in Formula Renault UK in 2011, Oliver Rowland had no hesitation in returning to Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0. “The FR 2.0 is a step forward and the competition is extremely tight,” he said. “If I’m going to be the best, I need to prove myself against the best. Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0

is the right choice. I’ve learned a lot and it’s time to go for the title.”

Reserved he may be, but the British racer is very much a handson member of his new team and is often on hand for technical checks, as his team principal Sander Dorsman explained: “Oliver lives close to the factory, which is good for Manor MP Motorsport and for him. He spends a lot of time preparing for meetings. That’s what’s helped take him this far and will help him grow as a driver and a person.”

Despite holding a 17-point lead over Pierre Gasly in the standings, the championship frontrunner is taking nothing for granted just yet: “Everything’s gone well so far and I’m happy to be leading. The team has done a perfect job but we need to keep our feet on the ground because there are still a lot of things that can happen.”

Aware that the stakes are high, he added: “There’s going to be a lot of pressure. Winning the title will make a big difference, and without the grant who knows what Gasly and I will be doing next year. Qualifying pace will be the key. If we can stay ahead, I’ll finish the job off no problem.”

J'aime beaucoup ce tracé ! Il y a beaucoup de virages différents, ce qui rend le défi intéressant. C'est toujours bon d'aller à Budapest, et comme le circuit est proche de la ville, je suis heureux d'y retourner !

Ces dernières saisons, vous avez couru en Mégane Trophy puis en Clio Cup avant de revenir. Que pouvez-vous nous dire sur ces deux voitures de course ?

Premièrement qu’on ne peut pas les comparer ! La Clio est plus typée Touring Car tandis que la Mégane ressemble à une monoplace carénée. C'est totalement différent ! Je n'ai pas encore pu prendre le volant de Nouvelle Clio Cup mais les pilotes n'en disent que du bien. Seul point commun, les deux catégories sont parfaites niveau budget. Chaque année, j'étudie les possibilités qui s'offrent à moi et j’y prends beaucoup de plaisir.

Un petit mot sur la rivalité entre Oregon Team et Equipe Verschuur ?

Il y a une rivalité évidente qu’on ne peut nier. J’ai toutefois piloté l'an dernier pour Oregon en Clio Cup Italie. L'équipe, la structure et l'organisation sont vraiment différentes de ce que j'ai vu chez Verschuur. Je me sens plus en confiance au sein de la structure familiale mais l’équipe italienne est vraiment sympathique avec un personnel compétent. Il y a une bonne émulation, contrairement aux apparences !

You left Megane Trophy to drive in Clio Cup and now you’re back in the Megane again. What can you tell us about the two cars?

Well, first of all you can’t compare them. The Clio is more of a touring car while the Megane is like a single-seater with bodywork over it. It’s totally different. I haven’t driven the New Clio Cup yet but I’ve only heard good things about it from other drivers. The only thing the two categories have in common is that they’re perfect when it comes to budgets. I take a close look at the offers I receive every year and I get a lot of pleasure out of them.

Can you tell us a little bit about the rivalry between Oregon Team and Equipe Verschuur?

There is a rivalry. You can’t deny that, though I did drive for Oregon last year in the Clio Cup Italy. The team, the structure and the organisation are very different to what I’ve seen at Verschuur. I feel more confident with Equipe Verschuur but the Italian team is really nice and the people there know what they’re doing. It might not look like it, but it’s a healthy rivalry.

You’ve had success at the Hungaroring before, scoring two poles and two podium finishes here the year you won the title.

I really love this track. It’s got a lot of different corners, which makes it a fascinating challenge. It’s always good to go to Budapest too, and with the track being so close to the city I’m delighted to be returning.
