MEDIA GUIDE

EDITORIAL Fast, free and fun – these are the key values of the World Series by Renault. Since its creation in 2005, the World Series by Renault has enjoyed great popular success attracting more than 500 000 spectators per year with the highest level of motorsport races. Last winter gave us huge satisfaction to see the names of Grosjean, Ricciardo, Vergne and Pic join the field of the Formula One World championship. We have known for a long time just how much potential they have, and their move up the ladder means that 14 out of the 24 drivers taking part in the 2012 Formula One championship have raced in a Formula Renault on their way to the top. With the launch of the new Formula Renault 3.5 and an exciting new event on the calendar at the Moscow Raceway in Russia, the 2012 campaign has got an awful lot going for it. The Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0, a school for champions, and the saloon car racing of the Eurocup Megane Trophy and Eurocup Clio, are essential ingredients in the success of the events. With action and excitement on the track as well as in the paddock, World Series by Renault meetings are unique events that the whole family can enjoy. I would like to wish you an excellent season on behalf of the World Series by Renault.

RENAULT AND MOTORSPORT RENAULT’S LINKS WITH MOTORSPORT GO BACK MANY, MANY YEARS, THE COMPANY HAVING PLAYED AN ACTIVE ROLE IN MOTOR RACING SINCE ITS VERY FOUNDATION AND MAKING ITS NAME WITH THE TRIUMPHS OF LOUIS AND MARCEL RENAULT AT THE START OF THE LAST CENTURY. NOW MORE INVOLVED THAN EVER, RENAULT ORGANISES SOME OF THE EVENTS FORMING PART OF THE MOTOR RACING PYRAMID AND COMPETES IN FORMULA ONE.

FORMULA 1 After introducing turbo-charged engines at the end of the 1970s and V10 engines in the 1990s, Renault returned to motorsport’s flagship category in 2002 as an independent constructor. Its consistent progress was finally rewarded with the exceptional achievements of the 2005 and 2006 seasons, when Fernando Alonso and Renault won the Formula One drivers’ and

8

constructors’ titles. The Renault V8 earned further world crowns in 2010 and 2011 with Red Bull Racing and the one-time Formula Renault 3.5 Series driver Sebastian Vettel. With Red Bull Racing, Lotus, Williams and Caterham now on its books, Renault supplies engines to more Formula One teams than any other manufacturer.

WORLD SERIES BY RENAULT Launched in 2005 and combining topclass motorsport action with attractions and events for all the family, these all-Renault meetings proved to be an immediate success. More than 4,300,000 spectators have flocked to WSR races in the last seven years, some of them new to the sport, some of them lured back to it. The World Series by Renault schedule features the Formula Renault 3.5 Series,

Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0, Eurocup Megane Trophy and Eurocup Clio, along with the national championships of the host countries. Attractions include on-track demonstrations by the Red Bull Racing Team, legendary vintage Renault models, fun and games for children and much more besides. And what is more, it’s all free! Read on to find out more about the WSR concept.

RENAULT AND MOTORSPORT NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS In Formula Renault 2.0 and Clio Cup, Renault Sport has two models that are ideally suited to the organization of national championships throughout the world. In addition to the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0, two series provide drivers with the opportunity to increase their experience and prepare for the next competitive level. The Formula Renault 2.0 NEC (North European Cup) is held over eight meetings in Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria and the Czech Republic. Based on Southern Europe, Formula Renault 2.0 ALPS stops off in Italy, France, Belgium, Austria and Spain. Most of the Eurocup FR 2.0 team also take part in one or the other of these two championships. The Clio Cup perpetuates the spirit of the legendary R8 Gordini Cup, the first single brand sports touring car formula in the history of motorsport. Between 1966 and 2012, Renault Sport has never stopped providing drivers with cars that combine driving pleasure, controlled costs and technical and sporting fairness. There are now eight Clio Cup national championships in 2012: France, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Sweden, Bohemia (Czech Republic, Slovakia and Germany) and the Speed Trophy in Germany. The Eurocup Clio brings together the best drivers from these series as part of the World Series by Renault.

RALLY With Twingo R.S. R1, Twingo R.S. R2 Evo and Clio R.S. R3, Renault Sport offers a comprehensive range of rally cars compliant with FIA Group R regulations. No matter whether you’re a rallying rookie or an experienced driver looking for highperformance, you’ll find something tailored exactly to your needs. The Rally Customer range has been expanded with the addition of Mégane R.S. N4, which offers an unrivalled price-to-performance ratio for tarmac rallying. As with track racing, Renault Sport and its subsidiaries organize national trophies. In France, the Twingo R1 Trophy operates as a support series to the French Junior Championship. The Twingo R2 and Renault Sport Trophies (Clio R.S. R3 & Mégane R.S. N4) give all customers the opportunity to compete in optimum conditions.

SUPER TC 2000 Actively involved in motorsport in Argentina for forty years, Renault has officially entered the Super TC 2000 championship. Competing against eight other manufacturers, the subsidiary is competing with Renault Fluence, driven by a 430hp, V8 engine. As a curtain-raiser to this very popular championship, the national Formula Renault Elf provides young drivers with the chance to learn about racing in singleseaters driven by a 150hp, 2.0-litre 16V engine. In total, 22 million viewers follow Renault Argentina’s involvement in motorsport every year.

A NURSERY FOR F1 DRIVERS SEBASTIAN VETTEL, LEWIS HAMILTON AND KIMI RÄIKKÖNEN ARE JUST SOME OF THE FORMULA ONE STARS UNEARTHED AND GROOMED BY THE RENAULT SPORT DRIVER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME. SO SUCCESSFUL HAS THE PROGRAMME BEEN IN NURTURING TALENT, THAT OF THE 24 DRIVERS ON THE GRID FOR THE 2012 FORMULA ONE SEASON, NO FEWER THAN 14 HAVE TAKEN A SEAT IN A FORMULA RENAULT CAR, NEARLY 60% OF THE FIELD.

Renault Sport Technologies’ two singleseaters, Formula Renault 2.0 and Formula Renault 3.5, give the best drivers the opportunity to shine and ready themselves for the very highest level. It is not just about the cars though. RST has created a system for preparing emerging talent for the rigours of Formula One. And the pinnacle of that system is World Series by Renault. In its continuing efforts to help World Series by Renault drivers reach the highest rung of the motor-racing ladder, for the last few years RST has been running a number of initiatives to help drivers get an inside view into the world of Formula One. 12

“We’ve got links with several Formula One teams, the idea being to give our drivers the chance to discover an environment that’s often very hard to break into,” said Jean-Pascal Dauce, Director of Motorsport Renault Sport Technologies. “With that in mind, we’ve designed a calendar that does not clash with any of the Formula One dates, so that drivers can play a part with the F1 teams.”

A GUIDE TO THE WORLD SERIES BY RENAULT

THE CREATION OF THE WORLD SERIES BY RENAULT IN 2005 MARKED AN IMPORTANT STAGE IN THE HISTORY OF RENAULT SPORT. THIS GROUND-BREAKING CONCEPT, COMBINING TOP-CLASS MOTORSPORT ACTION WITH EXCLUSIVE ACTIVITIES FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY, ATTRACTED MORE THAN 4,300,000 SPECTATORS IN ITS FIRST SEVEN YEARS. Created as a result of the merger of the Eurocup Formula Renault V6 and the World Series by Nissan, Formula Renault 3.5 Series is World Series by Renault’s flagship category. All 26 drivers behind the wheel of the new 530bhp single-

seater have just one thing in mind: to make it into Formula One and emulate the success achieved by the likes of Robert Kubica, Sebastian Vettel, Jaime Alguersuari, Daniel Ricciado, Jean-Eric Vergne and Charles Pic. World Series by Renault forms part of a pyramid system, the apex of which is F1. Young drivers start out in the national Formula Renault 2.0 championships, an entry-level formula offering the perfect introduction to motor racing. Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 then gives them the chance to raise their game in a top-level and hotly contested event. For cream of the crop a move up to Formula Renault 3.5 Series is next step, a springboard to the world of F1. Specially designed for World Series by Renault meetings, the Eurocup Megane Trophy features high-performance

18

400bhp cars that are not unlike their GT and DTM counterparts. This championship is a highly competitive one, with most of the leading drivers having gleaned experience in single-seater racing beforehand, while Eurocup Clio, which has been on the World Series by Renault calendar since 2011, is the Champions League of Clio Cup racing. F1: THE STAR ATTRACTION! In 2012 World Series by Renault meetings will give spectators a unique opportunity to get a close-up view of Red Bull Racing Team’s Formula One champions in action. BRM Like the world’s finest car manufacturers, the masters of watchmaking are known for their relentless pursuit of perfection, eschewing production figures for the ultimate in design and craftsmanship. Bernard Richards is one such master. From his base just a few miles from Paris, he maintains the painstaking watch-making traditions passed down by his ancestors, working night and day and with the help of his craftsmen to turn and assemble complex parts that are manufactured nowhere else. The world’s leading luxury and watchmaking brands draw on his services and expertise, in the knowledge that BRM is a byword for genius and the uniquely unconventional. Quality not quantity is what counts at BRM, and with that maxim in mind and to celebrate the start of the new season, the French watchmaker is launching a special-edition World Series by Renault watch. http://www.brm-manufacture.com 26

MICHELIN The Michelin Group, the world’s number one in tyres, has been at the forefront of technology in its field for more than a century. It was Michelin that manufactured the first car tyre, invented radial technology and first introduced it to motorsport. Michelin was at Renault’s side when turbo engines were first introduced in 1977 and now supplies tyres for all Renault Sport competition vehicles. The performance and reliability of tyres supplied by the French manufacturer, as well its technical assistance and understanding of the concept of partnership, are all key elements in achieving excellence.

Major teams in both F1 and rally put their faith in Sabelt technology to reach the finish line safely. FORMULA RENAULT 3.5 A NEW CHAPTER IN THE HISTORY OF RENAULT SPORT OPENS WITH THE LAUNCH OF THE THIRD GENERATION OF THE FORMULA RENAULT 3.5, A NEW SINGLE-SEATER THAT STAYS TRUE TO THE PHILOSOPHY THAT MADE ITS PREDECESSORS SO SUCCESSFUL: EXCEPTIONALLY HIGH PERFORMANCE, COST-EFFICIENCY, RELIABILITY AND A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD.

Formula Renault 3.5 is a springboard to Formula One, as the likes of Robert Kubica, Sebastian Vettel, Jaime Alguersuari and, latterly, Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne have all shown in brilliant fashion. The new FR 3.5 is designed to prepare the brightest young driving talents for the rigours of Formula One and features a series of technological innovations, most notably in terms of aerodynamics and safety. The two most important of these innovations are the Drag Reduction System (DRS) and the absence of a battery and starter. The car’s DRS, which was developed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) prior to wind tunnel tests, enhances aerodynamic efficiency and increases performance at a minimal cost. In addition to its new Zytek Engineeringdeveloped V8 530bhp engine, the revamped FR 3.5 features a new gearbox, pneumatic clutch control and a state-ofthe-art electronic system, not to mention cutting-edge carbon brakes and new tyres specially developed by Michelin. 52

The car is 50bhp more powerful and 15kg lighter than the previous model, this in spite of the discipline’s latest and more stringent safety measures. It also features antiintrusion panels and a considerably improved power-to-weight ratio, all comfortably within season budgets. The development programme was carried out on several European circuits through 2011, with Romain Grosjean, Andy Soucek and Ben Hanley behind the wheel, with the new FR 3.5 demonstrating its speed and reliability straightaway. Last season 15 different drivers featured in the top three on at least one occasion, and six different drivers won at least one race, a telling statistic that demonstrates the highly competitive nature of the Formula Renault 3.5 Series. With the F1 triumph of Sebastian Vettel to inspire them, as well as the recent arrivals of Jean-Eric Vergne, Daniel Ricciardo and Charles Pic, the 26 drivers taking part in this year’s championship will not lack motivation in what promises to be a gripping season.

DETAILED REVIEW ENGINE Performance is achieved via a new 530bhp V8 engine, developed by Zytek Engineering and connected to a new semi-automatic gearbox with pneumatic activation. Aside from increasing power (50bhp more than the previous model), it offers a wider operating range, with the rev limit set at 9500 rpm (running on 102 octane fuel).

CHASSIS To keep costs under control, a third of the components from the previous model have been retained. The carbon chassis, designed and built by Dallara, is an evolution of the previous frame. On a visual level, the cockpit, front and rear wings are all radically different. AERODYNAMICS The rear spoiler features a drag reduction system (DRS) that can be activated by the driver. This system disrupts the airflow in order to increase straight-line speeds. Designed using computational fluid dynamics and later tested in a wind tunnel, DRS is a low-cost way to improve aerodynamic efficiency and increase performance. Using the very latest design tools, engineers have designed the car’s wings for optimal efficiency, increasing the maximum aerodynamic load by 34% compared with the previous model.

ONBOARD ELECTRONICS The electronic system features two new electronic units, both of which improve performance, usability and technical equality. Engine and gearbox management is provided by the Pectel MQ12 ECU unit. The PI Omega L2+ data logger collects all the information provided by the sensors. New PI Toolbox and Toolset software allows technical teams and drivers to analyse the data and improve settings and driver performance. Meanwhile, the next-generation steering wheel has been designed to prepare drivers in the best possible way for what they will encounter in F1.

53

FORMULA RENAULT 3.5 GEARBOX The new Formula Renault 3.5 employs a Ricardo six-speed sequential gearbox, which is now teamed with a pneumatic rather than hydraulic control. This new set-up, developed with Shiftec, improves usability and saves weight. The selflocking limited slip differential offers four engine-transmission combinations, and the magnesium casing supports the rear suspension anchor points. SUSPENSION The suspension adopts a classic system for a single-seat racing car: double wishbones, pushrods and adjustable spring-damper units (one front, two rear). The new, twoway adjustable dampers are identical at the front and the rear. They are ultra-light and allow a weight saving of 4kg for the car as a whole. Similarly, the machined aluminium hub carriers increase rigidity by 65% and reduce the unsprung weight by 3kg per wheel. BRAKES The brake discs, gripped by Brembo sixpiston monobloc callipers, are identical at the front and rear of the car. The discs use a new form of carbon and are designed for enhanced cooling. This, combined with the car’s new aerodynamic features, makes the brakes more hard-wearing and more efficient, with shorter stopping distances.

FORMULA RENAULT 3.5 SERIES

EXTRACTS FROM THE REGULATIONS The championship is open to 13 teams, each with two cars and selected by the Organising Committee. Drivers must hold a Grade A or B FIA licence. During the season each team is allowed to use four drivers. The authorisation of the Organising Committee is required for a driver to change teams. Private testing Private testing with Formula Renault 3.5 cars is prohibited outside the collective testing sessions organised by Renault Sport Technologies. Teams still have three hours ECU time per car to organise private tests on tracks that are not on the 2012 race schedule (three hours during the season and five during the winter). Any driver and/ or team participating in Formula Renault 3.5 Series may not take part in testing at any 56

of the Championship circuits, regardless of the type of car used (except for drivers registered to take part in all of the races in another championship, with the prior consent of the Organising Committee, and except for testing organised with a current F1 team). Collective testing With a view to giving young drivers a chance to accumulate on-track experience prior to qualifying and the races, two 75-minute sessions of collective testing will be held on Fridays, except for the Monaco meeting, where a single test session is scheduled. Qualifying One 30-minute qualifying session will be held on each race day, with the fastest lap times achieved by each driver in this session determining the order in which they start on the grid.

Race format Each meeting, with the exception of Monaco (where only one race will be held), will consist of two qualifying sessions and two races. The two races will run for a duration of 44 minutes + one lap. Race two will include a mandatory pit stop within a “window” defined in the table below. Track Motorland Aragon Monaco Spa-Francorchamps Nürbürgring Moscow Raceway Silverstone Hungaroring Paul Ricard HTTT Catalunya

Pit stop between laps 5 / 15 5 / 13 5 / 17 5 / 17 5 / 17 5 / 16 5 / 16 5 / 17

window will receive a 20-second penalty. Any driver who makes a pit stop before the end of the first lap or who fails to stop at all will receive a one-minute penalty. Start grid: staggered 1:1 format. DRS During each race the driver will have a time allocation during which the DRS can be activated. Said time period will be announced no less than two hours before the start of the race.

During this pit stop, seven mechanics must change two wheels. Pit stops are prohibited when the safety car is on the track, with the window being extended by the number of laps for which the safety car is out. Any driver who makes a pit stop outside this 57

FORMULA RENAULT 3.5 SERIES Points and titles The Formula Renault 3.5 Series includes two separate championships: one for drivers and one for teams. There is also a rookie championship. Points scored by both drivers count towards the team standings. Points are awarded at the end of each race according to the following table: All results count towards the championship standings. In the event of any competitors finishing on equal points, the driver with the most wins will be ranked higher. If the drivers in question have the same number of wins, the number of second places will be taken into consideration, and so on should this be necessary. Should the competitors remain equal after all such considerations, the driver with the best result in the final race will be ranked higher.

Awards The championship leader at the end of the season’s fourth meeting will be rewarded with a drive in the Formula One Roadshow at the next World Series by Renault event. The overall 2012 Formula Renault 3.5 Series champion will also earn a test drive with the Red Bull Racing Formula One Team (TBC). Class. 1st

2011 SEASON REVIEW

The championship battle between Robert Wickens and Jean-Eric Vergne was only decided at the very end of an exceptionally competitive season in which 15 different drivers earned podium finishes and six claimed race wins. Wickens began the campaign in fine style at Motorland Aragon and took to the top of the championship standings at SpaFrancorchamps. The Canadian had a weekend to forget at Monza, however, retiring from both races and looking on helplessly as title rival Vergne took a second place and a win to move into the overall lead. Wickens regained the upper hand on the streets of Monaco, and cemented his position at the Nürburgring, only for Vergne to strike back with a one-two in Hungary, 62

closing right up on the championship leader going into the midsummer break. The Canadian came back refreshed with two poles and two wins at Silverstone, although his tenacious team-mate refused to give up, slicing the gap between them to a mere two points after a hugely productive weekend at Paul Ricard. In a gripping finale at Barcelona, Wickens moved nine points clear after taking maximum points in Race One, ahead of Vergne in second. That proved to be the final margin between them, with the two coming together at the start of Race Two to bring their scintillating duel to a premature end. Wickens’ championship triumph helped Carlin take the team title for the first time, with Alexander Rossi, third in the overall standings, claiming the rookies’ crown.

FORMULA RENAULT 2.0 by Renault Sport Technologies to give young drivers the chance to familiarise themselves with the kind of features and handling found further up the motor racing pyramid. The single-seater demonstrated its enhanced performance levels in a development programme covering more than 6,000 kilometres and overseen by Renault Sport Technologies’ technical teams, with drivers Filipe Albuquerque, Alvaro Parente and Andy Soucek putting it through its paces.

2010 SAW THE INTRODUCTION OF THE NEW FORMULA RENAULT 2.0, THE LATEST VERSION OF THE WORLD’S BEST-SELLING SINGLE-SEATER. DECIDEDLY MODERN WITH A FLOWING, SENSUAL LOOK, IT IS A RACE CAR DESIGNED TO GIVE YOUNG DRIVERS AIMING TO GRADUATE TO FORMULA ONE THE PERFECT TOOL TO HONE THEIR TALENT. Formula Renault has been an essential stage in the career of many young drivers for close to 30 years now. Pioneers Alain Prost, Rene Arnoux and Didier Pironi all made a name for themselves in Formula Renault at the start of their careers, with Kimi Räikkönen, Lewis Hamilton, Robert Kubica, Felipe Massa, Kamui Kobayachi, Jaime Alguersuari, Romain Grosjean, Daniel Ricciardo, Jean-Eric Vergne and Charles Pic all taking the same path in recent years. The 2010 season saw the competitive debut of the new FR 2.0, a car designed 66

The FR 2.0 requires deft skills at the wheel, offering a very similar test of a driver’s abilities to the FR 3.5. Meeting the latest safety standards, the new FR 2.0 is equipped with some of the most advanced technical developments, including a seven-speed sequential gearbox with electric steering wheel-mounted paddles. This kind of transmission system was previously unavailable for race cars in this category and at this price. Thanks to its improved design, outstanding reliability and reduced number of spare parts, running costs for the Formula Renault 2.0 have been cut by a barely credible 10 per cent. The underlying principles of Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 are the same as they have always been: the same performance level for all drivers and a level playing field, leaving it up to the men at the wheel to let their talent do the talking on the track.

DETAILED REVIEW

CHASSIS The FR 2.0 has been designed based on a carbon-fibre monocoque that complies with the 2011 FIA F3 safety standards, with a self-supporting engine and gearbox. All bodywork parts are also made of carbon fibre. AERODYNAMICS Downforce is generated by the adjustable front and rear wings and by the combination of undertray and diffuser, which pin the car to the track by accelerating the airflow beneath it. The aerodynamic setup selected for the FR 2.0 was confirmed following extended wind tunnel testing, and then optimised using CFD. The new car’s aerodynamic characteristics also promote better cornering performance, while it is also more sensitive to set-up adjustment than its predecessor.

ENGINE The FR 2.0 takes its four-cylinder, 2.0-litre normally-aspirated engine from the Clio III Renault Sport Phase 2. Packing 210bhp of power, it remains close to the production version. Aside from its performance, special attention was given to the engine’s reliability during the research and development work conducted by Renault Sport Technologies.

67

FORMULA RENAULT 2.0 ONBOARD ELECTRONICS The car comes with two onboard electronic units. The first ECU, accessible only by Renault Sport Technologies’ engineers, manages engine and gearbox operations, while the second is devoted to data acquisition. The FR 2.0 is also fitted with integrated chassis sensors. Equipped with a colour dashboard display, the steering wheel gives drivers and teams access to a wealth of information. GEARBOX The FR 2.0 is fitted with a seven-speed, sequential gearbox with steering wheelmounted paddles. Operated via an actuator, its electric controls not only enable quicker gear changes but are also much simpler to use and make maintenance quicker and easier. The seven-speed gearbox requires just one gear ratio setting for the entire season, reducing costs even further.

SUSPENSION Formula Renault 2.0 comes with the latest two ways adjustable shock absorbers at the rear, while the front suspension uses a single shock absorber. 68

2011 SEASON REVIEW CARLOS SAINZ JR AND WILL STEVENS MADE FAST STARTS TO THE CAMPAIGN WITH WINS APIECE AT MOTORLAND ARAGON. THE SON OF CARLOS SAINZ, THE TWO-TIME WORLD RALLY CHAMPION AND PARIS-DAKAR WINNER, THE SPANIARD EXTEND HIS LEAD IN THE STANDINGS AT SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, WHERE DANIIL KVYAT STARRED BY NOTCHING HIS FIRST EUROCUP FORMULA RENAULT 2.0 TRIUMPH.

After quietly collecting points in the first two meetings, 2010 Eurocup Formula BMW champion Robin Frijns then staked his title claim with his maiden victory of the season at the Nürburgring. The Dutchman took over at the top of the standings with another win and a second place in Hungary, capitalising on his rivals’ various mishaps to take a sizeable lead with him to Silverstone, where he topped the podium in both races. Speed, consistency and regular point scoring were the keys to Frijns’ dominance 76

as the season wore on. Never finishing lower than fifth, he sewed the championship up at Paul Ricard, with two races still to go. Thanks to his flawless race management, his team Josef Kaufmann Racing made an instant impact on their Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 debut, though the team title went to Koiranen Motorsport, thanks in the main to the respective second- and thirdplaced championship finishes of Sainz Jr and Kvyat.

MÉGANE TROPHY

CREATED AS PART OF THE WORLD SERIES BY RENAULT, EUROCUP MEGANE TROPHY HAS CAUGHT THE IMAGINATION OF MORE THAN FOUR MILLION SPECTATORS SINCE MAKING ITS GRAND ENTRANCE IN 2005. LAUNCHED IN 2009, THE NEW MEGANE TROPHY, THE RACING VERSION OF THE NEW MEGANE RENAULT SPORT, HERALDED THE START OF A NEW ERA FOR WORLD SERIES BY RENAULT. AN UPDATED CAR OFFERING ENHANCED PERFORMANCE, VERSION 2.0 OF THE MEGANE TROPHY HAS WON PLAUDITS FROM ALL QUARTERS, EARNING THE ACCLAIM OF THE FANS, MEDIA, DRIVERS AND TEAMS ALIKE. Renault Sport has a long and fruitful tradition of high-performance saloon car racing, one that began in 1981 with the Coupe Renault 5 Turbo, later to be followed by the Alpine 80

V6 Turbo, R21 Turbo Europa Cup, the Spider and the Clio V6. Taking up the baton, the Megane Trophy ushered in a new era. A genuinely ground-breaking prototype boasting an ultra-aggressive design and an engine as rhythmical as it is powerful, it has rapidly become World Series by Renault’s standout race car. A worthy addition to the prestigious lineage of Renault saloon cars, the latest version of the Megane Trophy goes the extra mile. Its sharper design includes even more creative aerodynamic solutions, and its profile, complete with gull-wing doors, is reminiscent of the Le Mans 24 Hour touring cars. Meanwhile, the 400bhp engine offers greater all-round efficiency equivalent to that of a GT3.

DETAILED REVIEW band. Particularly sturdy and reliable, this engine is delivered sealed to teams, and is returned to Solutions F workshops at the end of each season (5,500km) for servicing.

ENGINE Fitted to the Espace and Vel Satis in their road-going versions and used in the previous Megane Trophy, this 3.5-litre V6 engine differs little from the production version. It does, however, come with a semi-dry sump, connecting rod bolts and speciallydesigned camshafts and exhaust systems. Dubbed the V4Y, the engine benefits from a high level of tuning on the Megane Trophy. A new inlet manifold supplied by a dynamic air intake located on the roof and all-new engine mapping have increased power from 360 to 400bhp and widened the power

GEARBOX Mounted longitudinally behind the engine, the semi-automatic sequential gearbox has six speeds controlled from the steering wheel. The lack of a clutch pedal gives the driver the option of left-foot braking, while the twin-disk ceramic clutch ensures excellent speed through the gears and unquestionable reliability. ONBOARD ELECTRONICS The ECU controls the engine and gearbox management and data acquisition systems. It is sealed in order to facilitate scrutineering and technical equity between competing teams.

81

MEGANE TROPHY CHASSIS The Megane Trophy features a speciallydesigned multi-tubular chassis. Its base consists of rectangular shaped tubes onto which the central cell and the front and rear frames are grafted. This assembly complies with FIA Sports-Prototypes regulations, which are particularly stringent in terms of safety but more lenient in other aspects. The relative freedom allowed for the installation of powertrain units and the cockpit results in almost perfect weight distribution, with 47.8 per cent of the weight at the front. AERODYNAMICS The car’s aerodynamic design is achieved using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics). This technology, used in Formula One, involves using computers to study air movement. The Megane Trophy also enjoys optimum levels of ground-effect thanks to a specially-designed bumper, an undertray, diffuser and rear spoiler. These elements combine to increase downforce by 20 per cent, while drag has been reduced by 15 per cent compared to the previous model. The result is increased straight-line and cornering speed. SUSPENSION The Megane Trophy employs the doublewishbone principle at both the front and the rear. Both the compression- and reboundadjustable, shock absorbers are sealed. Nevertheless, several options are available for the suspension settings.

2011 SEASON REVIEW AS FAR AS THE EUROCUP MEGANE TROPHY WAS CONCERNED, 2011 WAS INDISPUTABLY THE YEAR OF STEFANO COMINI. COMPETING IN THE EVENT FOR A SECOND YEAR, HAVING GRADUATED FROM SINGLE-SEATER DRIVING, THE SWISS DOMINATED PROCEEDINGS FROM START TO FINISH.

Kicking off with two poles and two wins at Motorland Aragon, Comini repeated the feat at Spa-Francorchamps and did it again at the Nürburgring. It was not until Hungary and the seventh race of the campaign that he was knocked off his perch at the top of the podium, team-mate Niccolo Nalio pushing him into an unaccustomed second. Normal service was resumed in race two at the Hungaroring, with another two first

90

places following at Silverstone, more than enough for him to secure his maiden motorsport title. Oregon Team swept the board in 2011. With Comini and Nalio completing a one-two in the driver standings, the Italians cruised to the team championship. The only piece of silverware to evade their grasp was the Gentlemen Drivers’ crown, which was claimed by David Dermont of TDS Racing.

CLIO CUP IN DEVELOPING THE CLIO RENAULT SPORT, THE ENGINEERS OF RENAULT SPORT TECHNOLOGIES WERE GIVEN THE BRIEF OF DESIGNING A CAR TO BE USED SOLELY FOR TRACK RACING: THE CLIO CUP. FAITHFULLY DERIVED FROM THE PRODUCTION VERSION AND DESIGNED FOR SINGLE-BRAND, AUTO-RACING SERIES, THIS RACE VERSION OF THE CLIO IS EFFICIENT, FUN TO DRIVE AND COSTEFFECTIVE, AND WILL BE IN ACTION AGAIN THIS YEAR AS THE LEADING DRIVERS IN EACH NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GO HEAD TO HEAD IN EUROCUP CLIO. The engineers of Renault Sport Technologies have taken the modern technologies introduced in the Clio Renault Sport and built them into the Clio Cup. In making extensive use of production components (bodywork, engine, suspension system, steering, brakes, etc), they have come up with a model offering an unprecedented price-to- performance ratio.

acquisition system, its focus is resolutely on driver safety and comfort.

With its 17-inch wheels fitted with specifically-designed tyres, the Clio Cup looks every inch the racer it has been designed to be.

In terms of mechanics, the work carried out on the Clio Cup’s ground-link technology makes it fun to drive. Many hours of work have also gone into enhancing feel and sharpening chassis response by stiffening the structure (ball-joint connections, reinforced engine subframe, rigid engine and gearbox mountings), work that has been backed up by more than 10,000 kilometres of testing.

Bearing little resemblance to the production model, the driver compartment has been completely stripped down. Fitted with an FIA-homologated roll cage, Hans®-system compatible bucket seat and harness, a steering wheel-mounted gearshift and a digital dashboard display with a data

To guarantee a level playing field for all competitors, the engine, shock absorbers, gearbox and ECU are all sealed. By prohibiting any work from being carried out on these parts, Renault Sport Technologies also ensures that running costs for the season are kept to a minimum.

DETAILED REVIEW CHASSIS The Clio Renault Sport’s rigorous, balanced and sporty chassis provided a solid base on which to develop an efficient, easy and fun-to-drive motorsport version, with changes made to only a bare minimum of mechanical parts. The Clio Cup was the first Renault racing car to adopt an electric power-assisted steering system. AERODYNAMICS With its wider front and rear body panel, heavily perforated front bumper, and its rear diffuser, the Clio Renaultsport already had the perfect profile for track racing, and only a few specific motorsport features have been added to its distinguished and muscular design in creating the Clio Cup.

ONBOARD ELECTRONICS The Clio Cup is equipped with a dataacquisition system as standard, a first for an entry-level sports hatchback, with engine and gearbox management and the data-acquisition system itself all built into a single ECU. The unit is sealed to prevent any modifications. The Clio Cup comes with two software applications to facilitate the work of teams and drivers. A common feature in top-level motorsport, data acquisition is now being taken to the masses by the Clio Cup.

ENGINE The Clio Cup has inherited the best of the innovations featured in the four-cylinder 2.0-litre 16V F4R RS fitted in the Clio Renault Sport, though almost no internal modifications have been made to the production version’s engine. Sealed at four separate points prior to fitting, and boasting optimised electronic engine management, the Clio Cup’s upgraded engine delivers an increased power output of 151kW (207bhp) at 7,300rpm and torque of 223Nm at 5,550rpm.

95

CLIO CUP GEARBOX The six-speed sequential gearbox has been specifically designed for the motorsport version. Fitted with a self-locking differential system with clutch discs and ramp pressure plates, it is positioned right next to the steering wheel. The small gear lever enables very quick shifting, while the engine cut-out switch on the gearbox means there is no need to lift off the accelerator when moving through the gears. The hydraulicallycontrolled clutch mechanism is the same as on the production version.

96

SUSPENSION The Clio Cup retains the independent steering-axis front suspension system featured on the Clio Renault Sport, a system that helps reduce the horizontal force generated by engine torque under acceleration. The only parts specifically designed for the Clio Cup are the struts, shock absorbers, springs and the bracket connecting the lower arm, the pivot and the pivot holder. The Clio Cup is also the first Renault racing car to adopt an electric power-assisted steering system.

A maximum of 48 applications to take part in all the events in the series will be accepted, with priority given to teams and drivers already entered in a 2012 national Clio Cup championship approved by Renault Sport. Teams who are accepted for the entire Eurocup Clio Championship must participate in every event with the number of cars and drivers they entered in making their application. Private testing Collective testing days open to all competitors registered in the series may be organised at one or more of the circuits hosting championship events or on other circuits. Between 21 February 2012 and the last race of the 2012 Eurocup Clio season, drivers who have registered to take part in the entire championship or

one of the events are banned from testing at any of the 2012 Eurocup Clio circuits, including any part of the aforementioned circuits, of from racing any type of car there except when competing in a race in another championship with the consent of the Organising Committee. The only stated exception to this rule is their participation in a national Clio Cup championship series approved by Renault Sport (qualifying sessions and races). Collective testing Drivers competing in 2012 Eurocup Clio races and national Clio Cup championship races at the same meeting may only take part in the collective testing and free practice sessions scheduled for the Eurocup Clio. Race format Each meeting comprises one qualifying session and two races, each lasting 25 minutes + one lap. Qualifying Qualifying sessions will be open to all teams and drivers admitted to the meeting. In the event that more than 40 drivers enter a meeting, stewards may decide to split the qualifying session into two groups, depending on their criteria. Each qualifying session will last a minimum of 20 minutes. If the session is split into two groups, each session will last no less than ten minutes per group. The number of cars allowed to start each Eurocup Clio race is limited to the maximum allowed at each circuit.

98

Start grid: The start grid for race one will be determined according to the order of the fastest timed laps recorded by the drivers during the qualifying session. Should qualifying be split into two groups, the start grid for race one will be determined according to the order of the fastest timed laps recorded by the drivers in each group during the session. The start grid for race two will be determined according to the order of the fastest timed laps recorded by the drivers during the qualifying session. Should qualifying be split into two groups, the start grid for race two will be determined according to the order of the second-fastest timed laps recorded

by the drivers in each group during the session. Tyre allocations: Slick tyres may be used without restriction during collective testing sessions. During qualifying and both races, however, the use of front tyres is regulated. Each driver may use a maximum of four front slick tyres, which must be the same tyres as those registered by the competitor beforehand. Any number of rear tyres may be used, although tyres cannot be swapped over during qualifying and races. There are no restrictions on the quantity of wet-weather tyres used. 99

EUROCUP CLIO Points and titles: The 2012 Eurocup Clio comprises three separate championships: for drivers, teams and countries. Prior to the start of each meeting, teams entering more than two cars must designate the two drivers whose points shall count towards the team championship. To score points, drivers must take part in their first event at or before the third meeting. If they do so after this stage, they may not score points. The points awarded for their placing will be given to the next driver in the race standings. In the nations’ championship points will be scored by the top three drivers from each country at each meeting. Rank 1st

2011 SEASON REVIEW

A DOUBLE CLIO CUP FRANCE WINNER, NICOLAS MILAN STAMPED HIS AUTHORITY ON THE INAUGURAL EUROCUP CLIO RIGHT FROM THE START. The Milan Competition driver and team manager turned two poles into two wins at the opening leg at Spa-Francorchamps, executing the perfect team strategy with his young team-mate Marc Guillot. His domination continued at the Nürburgring, where he posted a third straight success. Milan’s 100 per cent record came to an end in a thrilling fourth race of the season, as Mike Verschuur made light of the wet conditions to take the chequered flag. Just a few days after sealing his third Clio Cup France title in a row, Milan hit back at 102

Paul Ricard, clinching the championship on home soil with a second place on the Saturday and a win on the Sunday. In doing so he earned a drive in the 2012 Eurocup Megane Trophy. Pride and the minor placings were at stake in the final meeting in Barcelona, where Milan secured victory number five of the season before being edged out by young Spaniard Azor Duenas in the final race of the year. While Milan became Eurocup Clio’s first champion, Verschuur made off with the Juniors’ crown, with Massimiliano Pedala, third behind Milan and Verschuur in the general standings, topping the Gentlemen Drivers category.

FORMULA RENAULT 1.6

LAUNCHED IN 2008 AS THE SUCCESSOR TO THE FORMULA CAMPUS, THE FORMULA RENAULT 1.6 IS A MODERN SINGLE-SEAT RACING CAR THAT HAS BEEN DESIGNED AS A STEPPING STONE TOWARDS THE FORMULA RENAULT 2.0. The Formula Renault 1.6 boasts a carbon monocoque chassis produced by Signatech, and complies with 2008 FIA Formula 3 safety regulations. The nose cone is made from a deformable structure for protection in case of frontal impact.

106

The keel-less, Formula One-inspired design allows for smoother airflow at the front of the car. Adjustments can be made to the front and rear wings. And the suspension layout also follows a tried-and-tested formula, with a single spring/shock absorber unit at the front and a double unit at the rear.

The car’s 1600cc K4M engine derives from that of the Twingo R.S., and stays very true to the production version. The main modifications are the use of a semi-wet sump – designed to prevent oil starvation in long bends – and an optimised electronic management system. The engine generates up to 140 bhp at 6750 rpm. The five-speed gearbox with dog clutch uses a sequential control system and has an electronic cut-off. The Formula Renault 1.6 is used, notably, by the Auto Sport Academy, a training subsidiary of the French Motorsport Federation. Franck Montagny, Sébastien Bourdais and Jean-Eric Vergne are among the drivers who have graduated from the school.

MÉGANE R.S.

RENAULT HAS INTRODUCED CHANGES ACROSS THE ENTIRE MÉGANE RANGE WITH THE RELEASE OF THE MODEL’S ‘COLLECTION 2012’ VERSIONS. MÉGANE R.S. 2012 BOASTS MORE MODERN AND ASSERTIVE LOOK, WHILE RETAINING THE MODEL’S ORIGINAL STYLING WHICH HAS PROVEN SUCH A HIT WITH CUSTOMERS. THE FRONT END IS MORE EXPRESSIVE, WHILE THE F1-STYLE FRONT BLADE, WHICH IS A CHARACTERISTIC OF RENAULT SPORT MODELS, FEATURES TWO ROWS OF SIX LEDS AND THE HEADLIGHTS SPORT BLACK MASKS. NEW 18-INCH WHEEL ARE AVAILABLE, INCLUDING THE EXISTING RIMS OF THE TROPHY VERSION WITH BRIDGESTONE POTENZA RE050A TYRES.

110

True to Renault Sport’s tradition of chassis excellence, Mégane R.S. is fitted with an exclusive independent steering axis front suspension for optimum handling and traction. This arrangement ensures stable front suspension geometry under hard acceleration or when applying a significant amount of steering lock, cutting torquesteer.

Mégane R.S. Collection 2012’s R.S. Dynamic Management delivers 15 extra horsepower and 20Nm additional torque. By selecting the Sport Mode, the driver can benefit from peak power of 265hp (instead of 250hp) and torque of 360Nm (instead of 340Nm) for even crisper acceleration response. The Mégane R.S. Trophy limited edition always delivers 265hp/360Nm. To meet the demands of everyday motoring and sporty driving, Mégane R.S. is available with a choice of two chassis: - the Sport chassis, which delivers the ideal balance between sports performance and everyday driving comfort - the Cup chassis, combined with a limited slip differential, delivers outstanding traction, which will appeal particularly to owners looking to enjoy themselves round a circuit.

The programmed-deflection rear torsion beam uses a new closed-profile beam which ensures the same level of stiffness for less weight. Like all Renault Sport models, Mégane R.S. comes with exceptionally powerful brakes thanks to its four-pot Brembo callipers and 340mmdiameter ventilated discs at the front, the biggest available in the hot hatch segment. At the rear, Mégane R.S. is equipped with 290mm-diameter discs.

111

TWINGO R.S. R1 DRIVEN BY THE ORIGINAL SPIRIT OF MOTORSPORT, RENAULT SPORT WAS THE FIRST MANUFACTURER TO GAIN COMPETITION APPROVAL FOR A CAR IN THE R1 CATEGORY, WHICH WAS CREATED BY THE FIA TO HELP YOUNG DRIVERS GETTING INTO RALLYING. THE TWINGO R.S. R1 RETAINS THE MOST ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS OF THE PRODUCTION MODEL.

Most of the changes from the production version are related to driver and co-driver safety. Taking the Twingo R.S. as its base, the R1 version uses the Twingo R.S. R2’s roll cage, which is bolted to the body shell for easier assembly. The car is also equipped with bucket seats, harnesses, a circuit breaker and a fire extinguisher – all of which are essential to safe rally driving.

112

The 1.6-litre 16v, 133-bhp engine and five-speed gearbox both derive from the production model, with a short final drive setting the only performance-boosting modification. Both the front shock absorbers, taken from the Clio R.S. Trophy, and the rear shock absorbers, from the original car, are non-adjustable. The original braking system, meanwhile, is enhanced by the presence of competition brake pads.

TWINGO R.S. R2 MODERN, AFFORDABLE AND RELIABLE, THE TWINGO R.S. R2 IS DESIGNED TO FOLLOW IN THE TRACKS OF PREVIOUS MODELS THAT HAVE ENABLED ENTIRE GENERATIONS OF DRIVERS TO PURSUE THEIR PASSION FOR MOTORSPORT, SUCH AS THE SUPER 5 GT TURBO AND THE GROUP N CLIO R.S. RAGNOTTI. LIKE THE TWINGO R.S. R2, THE EVO VERSION – WHICH GAINED COMPETITION APPROVAL ON 1 MARCH 2012 – DELIVERS GREAT DRIVEABILITY AND FIRST-CLASS PERFORMANCE.

As well as improvements to certain elements of the running gear, the Twingo R.S. R2 Evo boasts new Öhlins two-way adjustable hydraulic bump stop shock absorbers. The four-cylinder 1.6-litre 16v engine has been specially prepared to generate up to 195 bhp, which is 62 bhp more than the production engine. The engine is coupled with a five-speed sequential gearbox with a ‘joystick’ gearshift mounted on the steering

wheel, and develops a maximum torque of 200 Nm. The Twingo R.S. R2 Evo is sold as a complete kit, or as an upgrade kit for the R2 version. A gravel kit, consisting of suspension and chassis-strengthening parts, is also available.

113

CLIO R.S. R3 DESIGNED TO DELIVER THE PERFORMANCE LEVELS OF A SUPER 1600 BUT FOR LOWER RUNNING COSTS, THE CLIO R.S. R3 WAS AMONG THE VERY FIRST CARS TO GAIN COMPETITION APPROVAL UNDER FIA GROUP R REGULATIONS.

Equally at home on the gravel as it is on the tarmac, the Clio R.S. R3 has since become a bestseller, with more than 250 kits sold by the end of 2011. The Renault Sport Technologies range starts with the Access version, which has a similar engine and running gear to the production model, and which can be enhanced to reach the highest levels of performance. The Clio R3 shares the same powerful, muscular design as the production model, the only distinguishing feature of the competition version being the roof hatch.

114

The suspension system follows a tried-andtested formula, while also offering scope for fine-tuning to adjust the car’s performance to all driving styles. Under the bonnet, the naturally aspirated four-cylinder, 2.0-litre 16v engine has evolved over the seasons. The Maxi Evo version can now generate 250 bhp with maximum torque of 245 Nm. The fourcylinder engine is paired with a six-speed sequential gearbox, with a steering wheelmounted joystick gearshift.

MEGANE R.S. R4 HAVING BEEN THE FIRST MANUFACTURER TO OFFER A FULL RANGE BASED ON FIA GROUP R REGULATIONS, RENAULT SPORT TECHNOLOGIES HAS SINCE ADDED TO ITS LINEUP WITH THE MEGANE R.S. N4. DEVELOPPED FOR RALLYING ON TARMAC, THE GROUP N VERSION BUILDS ON THE STRENGTHS OF THE ORIGINAL CHASSIS AND ENGINE TO SET A NEW STANDARD.

With the aim of keeping costs down, Group N regulations impose strict limits on the modifications that can be made to the original car. These constraints have worked in the Megane R.S. N4’s favour, as takes full advantage of the technology used on the production model. The independent steering axis front suspension design has allowed engineers to develop a chassis that combines traction, directional stability and driving comfort. The car’s three-way adjustable shock absorbers also allow settings to be adapted to all different driving styles.

Under the bonnet, the 2.0-litre 16v turbo engine’s performance has been enhanced with an optimised electronic management system. Despite the presence of a regulatory air restrictor, the Megane R.S. N4’s engine can generate 280 bhp with 470 Nm of torque. The engine is coupled with a fivespeed H-pattern gearbox with dog clutch, developed specifically for this type of use.
