Le deuxième rendez-vous de la saison en Formula Renault 3.5 Series est certainement le plus prestigieux de l’année. Gagner dans les rues de Monaco, en lever de rideau du GP de Formule 1, est un formidable tremplin pour tout pilote qui vise le sommet du sport automobile. Ils sont vingt-six à vouloir l’emporter, vingt-six prêts à tout pour se faire remarquer en Principauté.

The second Formula Renault 3.5 Series meeting of the season is, without doubt, the most prestigious on the calendar. What is more, victory on the streets of Monaco in the Formula One Grand Prix curtain-raiser can be a real springboard for any driver aiming for the highest level of motorsport. Every one of the 26 drivers will be going all-out to win and make an impression in the principality.

Le vainqueur de l’Eurocup FR 2.0 2011 a répondu présent avec une 3e place et une victoire. souvent souri aux rookies en FR 3.5 Series. n Sam Bird claimed pole position in Monaco in last year’s GP2 Series, and he will be looking to use his track knowledge to full advantage. FR 3.5 Series rookies have, incidentally, often enjoyed success in Monaco. n Jules Bianchi n’a pas inscrit le moindre point à Motorland Aragón, en dépit d’un bon niveau de performance. Afin de se focaliser totalement sur la FR 3.5 Series à Monaco, le Français ne participera pas aux essais libres F1, comme il le fait normalement pour le compte de Sahara Force India. n Jules Bianchi left Motorland Aragón without a single point to his name, despite showing a good level of performance. In a bid to focus fully on the FR 3.5 Series in Monaco, the Frenchman will not take part in the F1 free practice, as he usually does for Sahara Force India.

Un tour débute par Sainte-Dévote, un virage piège où il y a heureusement un échappatoire. A la télévision, la montée de Beau Rivage semble droite, mais il faut pourtant tourner le volant à plusieurs reprises.

A lap starts with Sainte-Dévote, a difficult corner which fortunately has a run-off area. The Beau Rivage climb appears straight on TV, but you do in fact have to turn the steering wheel several times.

Après le Casino, on entre dans une partie technique et lente, avec la fameuse bosse qu’il faut éviter avant Mirabeau. On ne peut pas vraiment faire la différence entre le Casino et le Portier, mais c’est facile de perdre de précieuses secondes sans s’en rendre compte.

After Casino you enter a section that is technical and slow, with the famous hump that you need to avoid before Mirabeau. You cannot really make a decisive difference between Casino and Portier, but it is easy to lose precious seconds without even realising.

Le tour se termine par les virages très lents de la Rascasse et Antony Noghes, avant la ligne droite des stands qui n’est d’ailleurs pas une ligne droite…

Il faut sans cesse s’adapter aux conditions de piste. Samedi en qualifications, le premier tour est surprenant car l’évolution du grip change tous nos repères par rapport aux essais libres du jeudi.

The lap finishes with very slow corners at Rascasse and Antony Noghes, before the pit straight, which is not actually a straight. You must constantly adapt to the track conditions. The first lap in qualifying on Saturday is always surprising, because the grip evolution changes all our reference points from free practice on Thursday.

La dernière partie est la plus folle, avec les virages du Tabac et de la Piscine. C’est très rapide et on saute littéralement d’un rail à l’autre. Il n’y a pas de marge, il faut trouver le bon rythme. S’il est encore possible de lire les inscriptions Michelin sur le flanc des pneus après la séance, c’est que nous n’avons pas assez attaqué…

The final part is the craziest of all, with the corners at Tabac and Piscine. It is very quick and you literally jump from one barrier to another. There is no margin for error, and you have to find the right pace. If we are still able to read the Michelin lettering on the sides of the tyres after the session, it means that we have not pushed hard enough.

Le Tunnel est une courbe à fond.

Le changement de luminosité n’est pas un problème en soi. Il faut rester sur l’unique trajectoire, car il y a un dépôt de poussière et de gomme qui se forme au cours du week-end.

The tunnel is a fast bend. The changing light level is not a problem in itself. You need to stick to the racing line, because there are deposits of dust and rubber that build up over the course of the weekend.

ILS ONT GAGNÉ À MONACO NOTABLE PAST WINNERS IN MONACO On ne gagne jamais à Monaco par hasard… Vainqueur en 2006, Pastor Maldonado a remporté son premier Grand Prix de Formule 1 en Catalogne, pour le compte de Williams F1 Team. Alors rookie en Formula Renault 3.5 Series Charles Pic, aujourd’hui pilote Marussia F1 Team, signait son premier succès dans les rues de la Principauté en 2008. Il était imité un an plus tard par Oliver Turvey, désormais pilote d’essais Vodafone McLaren Mercedes. Enfin Daniel Ricciardo, pilote Scuderia Toro Rosso, est le seul à avoir inscrit deux fois son nom au palmarès de l’épreuve.

Pastor Maldonado, who triumphed in the principality in 2006, recently won his first Formula One Grand Prix for the Williams F1 Team at Catalunya. Charles Pic, who now drives for Marussia F1 Team, was a Formula Renault 3.5 Series rookie when he took his maiden Monaco victory in 2008. His achievement was matched a year later by Oliver Turvey, now a test driver for Vodafone McLaren Mercedes.

Meanwhile Daniel Ricciardo, who currently drives for Scuderia Toro Rosso, is the only man to have won the FR 3.5 Series race in Monaco on two occasions.

Pour rejoindre le circuit depuis le paddock, situé au Monaco Country Club, les vingt-six monoplaces parcourent en convoi le boulevard du Larvotto jusqu’au virage du Portier. Les Monégasques en ont pris l’habitude car le scénario se répète chaque année, mais la surprise est toujours palpable jeudi à 7h30 lorsque les moteurs rugissent pour la première fois.

Zar, le tout dernier concept car de Renault commémorant les 50 ans de l’Alpine A110, sera dévoilé à Monaco. Carlos Tavares, Directeur Général Délégué aux opérations de Renault, se chargera de boucler les premiers tours de roues vendredi à 13h30. La présentation officielle sera effectuée en compagnie de Sebastian Vettel, vendredi à 16h00 sur la barge Red Bull Racing.

To get to the circuit from the paddock, located at Monaco Country Club, the 26 single-seaters travel in convoy along the Boulevard du Larvotto to Portier corner.

Monaco’s local residents are used to the procession, as it takes place every year.

But even they are likely to experience a jolt of surprise on Thursday at 7.30am when they hear the engines roar for the first time.

ZAR IS THE STAR IN MONACO The Zar, Renault’s brand new concept car that celebrates 50 years of the Alpine A110, is to be unveiled in Monaco. Carlos Tavares, Renault’s chief operating officer, will give the Zar its first laps on Friday at 13.30. The car’s official presentation, with Sebastian Vettel, will take place at 16.00 the same day aboard the Red Bull Racing barge.

has released a limited edition of the Clio R.S.: the Clio R.S. Red Bull Racing RB7. It will be joined in Monaco by the Twingo R.S. Red Bull Racing RB7, with the two models due to take to the track on Sunday ahead of the Formula Renault 3.5 Series race.

A few weeks before Monaco, the Formula Renault 2.0 Alps drivers had their own fix of city racing on the streets of Pau. There, Norman Nato recorded his first Formula Renault 2.0 victory, with Paul-Loup Chatin winning the second race.

A Monaco, une nouvelle palette fera son apparition sur le volant de Nouvelle Formula Renault 3.5. Plusieurs pilotes ont en effet manifesté le souhait de pouvoir actionner le DRS autrement que par le bouton positionné sous l’écran digital. Une palette a donc été rajoutée à l’arrière du volant multifonction.

In Monaco, a new paddle will make its debut on the steering wheel of New Formula Renault 3.5. Several drivers had expressed an interest in being able to activate DRS using an alternative to the button under the digital screen. To that end, a paddle has been added to the back of the multifunction steering wheel.

Ma première course Laguna Seca en 2006. C’était la première fois que je roulais sous la pluie, je n’ai pas compris la trajectoire qu’il fallait prendre sur le mouillé et je suis sorti lors de la première course. La deuxième manche se déroulait également sous la pluie, mais j’ai gagné !

Mon circuit préféré Laguna Seca… avec le fameux virage du Corkscrew !

Mon pilote préféré Mika Häkkinen. C’était le seul à rivaliser avec Michael Schumacher et c’est le seul qui a vraiment réussi à le battre.

Mon acteur préféré Silvester Stallone Mon groupe préféré Angel and Airwaves, un groupe californien.

Mon plat préféré Un barbecue texan !

Le plat qui me rebute La banane… je n’aime ni la texture ni le goût !

Mon lieu de vacances favori Hawaï La célébrité que je rêve de rencontrer Angelina Jolie. Elle a une maison pas très loin de Monaco je crois, ce serait un point de rencontre parfait !

My first racing experience The first time I drove a racing car was when I was 13. It was a Formula Ford. I didn’t know how to use the clutch and it wasn’t easy to get out of the pits. After that I think I did a whole lap without changing gear, so it wasn’t a fast one!

My first race Laguna Seca in 2006. It was the first time I’d driven in the rain; I hadn’t understood which line to take in the wet and I went off in the first race. The second round also took place in the rain, but I won!

My favourite circuit Laguna Seca, with its famous Corkscrew corner.

My favourite driver Mika Häkkinen. He was the only driver who could match Michael Schumacher, and the only one who really managed to beat him.

My favourite actor Sylvester Stallone.

My favourite band Angels and Airwaves, a band from California.

My favourite food A Texan barbecue!

The food I can’t stand Bananas... I don’t like the texture or the taste.

My favourite holiday destination Hawaii.

The celebrity I dream of meeting Angelina Jolie. She has a house not too far from Monaco, I think, which would be a perfect meeting point!

Mon premier coup de volant La première fois que j’ai conduit une voiture de course, j’avais 13 ans. C’était une Formule Ford. Je ne savais pas utiliser l’embrayage et cela n’a pas été simple pour sortir des stands… Ensuite je crois que j’ai fait un tour complet sans changer de vitesse !
