DANIEL RICCIARDO FERA LE SPECTACLE Indissociables des World Series by Renault, les démonstrations F1 seront à nouveau assurées par Infiniti Red Bull Racing. L’équipe triple Championne du Monde mettra en piste une RB8 confiée à Daniel Ricciardo, vice-champion 2010 de Formula Renault 3.5 Series. Auteur de deux pole positions et d’autant de podiums il y a trois ans, l’Australien avait quitté Motorland Aragón en menant au classement général.

Le public pourra s’approcher de cette Formule 1 mythique tout au long du week-end, puisque l’équipe sera installée au cœur du paddock.

DANIEL RICCIARDO SET FOR A SHOW Now a permanent fixture on the World Series by Renault schedule, the F1 demonstration drives will once again be laid on by Infiniti Red Bull Racing this season. The reigning 3-time F1 world champions will be sending 2010 Formula Renault 3.5 Series runner-up Daniel Ricciardo out in the RB8 at Motorland Aragon, where the Australian notched two pole positions and a brace of podium finishes three years ago, ending the weekend atop the standings podiums. The team will be taking up residence in the paddock all weekend long, giving race-goers the chance to get a close look at the legendary F1 car.

Massimiliano Pedala was in a class of his own during last weekend’s collective testing in New Clio Cup at Motorland Aragon, outpacing the field ahead of the Eurocup Clio season opener at Imola on 11-12 May.

by Renault, la piste de Motorland Aragón se développe sur 5,345 kilomètres, avec une vitesse de pointe d’environ 280 km/h pour les Formula Renault 3.5. Témoin de freinages appuyés et d’un point de corde délicat, le premier virage conditionne les courbes qui suivent en montée. Les gros cœurs peuvent faire la différence dans la descente, caractérisée par un enchaînement en aveugle. L’interminable ligne droite s’achève par un gros freinage pour une épingle gauche particulièrement serrée. Il s’agit assurément de la meilleure opportunité pour dépasser !

Now an integral part of the World Series by Renault scene, the Motorland Aragón track stretches for 5.345 kilometres and allows the Formula Renault 3.5 to hit a top speed of around 280kmh. To be in good shape for the turns on the climb that follows, firmness and precision on the brakes and a tight apex are essential at turn one. The next sector is not for the faint-hearted, as the track falls away to reveal a corkscrew with blind corners, while hard braking is required at the end of the main straight, which leads into a very tight left-handed hairpin and provides the best of the track’s overtaking opportunities.

Finally, McLaren’s newly appointed reserve driver Kevin Magnussen will be back in action in the FR 3.5 this weekend, fresh from his travels with the Formula One circus at Shanghai and Bahrain.

VANDOORNE NE S’Y ATTENDAIT PAS FAST START FOR VANDOORNE Il y a quatre ans, tu débutais en monoplace. T’attendais-tu à rejoindre si vite en Formula Renault 3.5 Series ?

Pas vraiment ! J’ai d’abord saisi l’opportunité de disputer la F4 Eurocup 1.6, qui m’avait été offerte par le RACB. Ensuite, tout a été très vite… Je me souviens qu’à l’époque, je regardais les pilotes en espérant un jour être à leur place.

Le RACB, l’Autosport Academy, le FIA Institute et le McLaren Young Driver Programme t’ont aidé au cours de ta carrière.

Qu’as-tu retiré de ces soutiens ?

Tous ont été d’une immense aide pour réussir. Le RACB a été le premier à me donner la chance de faire mes preuves en monoplace.

Ils m’ont soutenu financièrement, sans eux je n’aurais jamais pu courir en monoplace. A l’Autosport Academy, j’ai appris à piloter une monoplace, à la régler, mais aussi à travailler avec les médias. Quand j’ai été sélectionné au sein de la FIA Young Driver Excellence Academy, c’est devenu encore plus sérieux.

Nous travaillions étroitement avec des personnalités d’expérience, comme Alex Wurz et Robert Reid.

Ils ont su nous apprendre les moindres détails de notre métier.

J’ai récemment rejoint le Mclaren Young Driver Programme, et cela a déjà été une grande aide. Ils assurent ma préparation physique, m’apprennent à devenir meilleur

techniquement et à tirer le meilleur d’une monoplace.

Remporter l’Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 t’a permis de remporter une bourse de 500 000 € pour monter en Formula Renault 3.5 Series. Cette aide était-elle décisive ?

Oui, je ne suis vraiment pas certain que j’aurais été capable de courir cette année sans cela. De toute façons, je n’ai plus à y penser aujourd’hui et je suis serein. Je dois exploiter au mieux la chance que j’ai.

Tu étais attendu pour te battre en tête mais tu as quand même fait sensation à Monza...

Je ne m’attendais peut-être pas à gagner dès la première course.

Mais tout a parfaitement fonctionné pour nous, j’avais la vitesse pour le faire ! Mais je sais que le niveau du championnat est très serré, il ne va rien falloir lâcher.

You made your single-seater debut four years ago. Did you expect to make your way into the Formula Renault 3.5 Series so quickly?

Not really. The Royal Automobile Club of Belgium (RACB) gave me the opportunity to compete in the F4 Eurocup 1.6 series and it was one I had to take. Everything happened very quickly after that. I remember watching the drivers at the time and hoping that one day I’d be in their place.

The RACB, the Autosport Academy, the FIA Institute and the McLaren Young Driver Programme have all helped you during the course of your career. What have you gained from their support?

They have all really helped me to succeed. The RACB was the first to give me a chance to try my hand in a single seater. They gave me financial support and

without them I’d never have been able to drive single seaters. At the Autosport Academy I learned how to drive and set up a single seater and also how to work with the media. Things started to get more serious when I was selected for the FIA Young Driver Excellence Academy. We worked closely with experienced people like Alex Wurz and Robert Reid, who taught us the little tricks of the trade. I joined the McLaren Young Driver Programme not so long ago and it’s given me a big push already. They take care of my physical preparation, and they’ve taught me how to improve in a technical sense and get the best out of a single seater.

You received €500,000 for winning the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 title and to help you make the move up to the Formula Renault 3.5 Series.

Has that financial support been important?

Yes, I really don’t think I’d have been able to drive this year without it. To be honest, though, I don’t think about it anymore and I feel relaxed. I need to make the most of the chance I’ve been given.

Though you were expected to be up there with the leaders, you stunned everyone with your performances at Monza. Did you expect to do so well?

I didn’t really expect to win my first race, but everything went perfectly for us and I had the pace I needed to go out and do it. I know the level of competition is very high, though, and I’ll need to give it everything I’ve got.

En 2013, la monoplace reçoit de nombreuses modifications. Afin de limiter les coûts, tous les éléments mécaniques et électroniques de la génération précédente ont été conservés. En revanche, le design et l’aérodynamique ont totalement été repensés, tandis que la sécurité a encore été améliorée. Tout ceci contribue à rendre le comportement et le pilotage encore plus proches de sa « grande sœur », Formula Renault 3.5.

An unquestionably modern car, Formula Renault 2.0 has been designed as a training tool for young drivers, and has undergone a series of modifications for the 2013 season. With a view to keeping costs down, all the previous version’s mechanical and electronic components have been retained, while the design and aerodynamics have been totally reworked. Safety features have also been enhanced, with the overall revamp resulting in a car that handles and drives like its big sister, the Formula Renault 3.5.

On t'imagine heureux de revenir à la compétition…

Oui, c'est super d'être de retour et j'aimerais remercier Oregon Team de m’avoir offert cette opportunité. Après de belles années en monoplace, j'ai maintenant hâte d'affronter ce nouveau défi en Eurocup Mégane Trophy.

Qu'est-ce qui a motivé ton choix ?

C'est un championnat sérieux, qui fait partie de l'environnement excitant que sont les World Series by Renault. La voiture en ellemême est agréable à conduire. En fait, elle se comporte plus comme un prototype qu'une voiture de tourisme. C'est un championnat monotype et tout le monde a sa chance au départ de la saison. Je suis évidemment ravi de travailler avec une équipe expérimentée comme Oregon et je pense que nous avons un ensemble compétitif.

Tu as été impressionnant aux essais, quels sont tes objectifs cette saison ?

Les essais collectifs ont été très positifs, non seulement en termes de performance mais aussi au niveau du travail des réglages et de l'adaptation de mon pilotage. L'équipe a fait du bon travail et tout est prêt pour le début de la saison. Personnellement, je cours toujours pour gagner. J'essaye de faire le meilleur travail possible et nous verrons où nous sommes à la fin de la saison !

WITHOUT A COMPETITIVE DRIVE LAST SEASON, THE 2008 ITALIAN FORMULA 3 AND 2011 FIA FORMULA 2 CHAMPION MIRKO BORTOLOTTI IS SET TO MAKE HIS RETURN TO THE TRACK IN THE EUROCUP MEGANE TROPHY. JUDGING BY HIS FASTEST TIMES IN COLLECTIVE TESTING AT MOTORLAND ARAGON, THE ITALIAN IS DETERMINED TO MAKE HIS MARK. You must be happy to be back racing again.

Yes, it’s great to be back. I’d like to thank Oregon Team for giving me this opportunity. I had several good years in single-seater racing and now I’m ready to face this new challenge in the Eurocup Megane Trophy.

What made you choose the Eurocup Megane Trophy?

It’s a serious championship and part of the World Series

by Renault, which is a very exciting environment. It’s a lovely car to drive and it handles more like a prototype than a touring car. It’s a single-make championship and everyone has the same chance of success at the start of the season. Obviously I’m delighted to be working with an experienced outfit like Oregon and I think we’ve got a competitive team.

You were very impressive in testing. What are your objectives this season?

Collective testing went very well for me, both in terms of performance and the work we did on setting up the car and adapting it to my driving style. The team put in some good work and everything is ready for the start of the season. Personally, I always drive to win and I try to do the best I can. We’ll just have to see where we are at the end of the season.
