En quelle langue préférez-vous parler ?

Comme vous voulez ! Je parle allemand, français, italien, anglais et espagnol. J’ai fait mes études dans un lycée international et le sport automobile est un excellent moyen de s’améliorer dans ce domaine.

Vous avez reçu le trophée du vainqueur de Monaco des mains de Carlos Ghosn. Il doit s’agir d’un moment spécial…

Sur le moment, c’était difficile à réaliser. Je sais ce que cela représente de gager ici. Quand j’avais dix ans, j’en rêvais en regardant la F1 à la télévision.

C’était un moment très spécial, mais je pense que ce sentiment va se décupler avec le temps.

Cette victoire vous donne-t-elle de nouveaux objectifs pour cette saison ?

Monaco est vraiment un circuit particulier. Dès ce week-end, nous allons retrouver un tracé complètement différent. Il faudra travailler dur pour rester au sommet de la hiérarchie. Je veux me battre pour le podium sur chaque course et nous verrons où nous en sommes en fin d’année.

11-12/05 – IMOLA Coup d’envoi de l’Eurocup Clio sur le circuit d’Imola. Dominateur en qualifications, Massimiliano Pedalà laisse échapper la première course, qui sourit à Josh Files. L’Italien se rattrape le lendemain, mais Files repart en tête du classement général.

The Eurocup Clio season gets under way at Imola. Dominant in qualifying, Massimiliano Pedala sees Josh Files take victory in race one. Though the Italian hit back in race two, it was the Briton who went away with the points lead.

18-19/05 – PAU THE SWISS DRIVER REKINDLED HIS CHAMPIONSHIP HOPES WITH VICTORY AT MONACO. NOW THIRD IN THE POINTS, HE KNOWS HE NEEDS TO GO AND DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN AT SPA. Which language do you prefer to speak?

Whichever you want. I speak German, French, Italian, English and Spanish. I studied at an international school and motorsport is a great way to improve in that area.

Le Formula Renault 2.0 Pau Trophy est organisé hors-championnat. Matt Parry prend le départ en pole position, mais c’est Luca Ghiotto qui inscrit son nom au palmarès du Grand Prix de Pau, rejoignant ainsi ses compatriotes Nuvolari et Ascari !

You received the Monaco winner’s trophy from Carlos Ghosn. That must have been a special moment.

It was a tough race to win. I know what it means to win here. When I was 10 I used to watch F1 on TV and I used to dream about it. It was a very special moment and I think it’s going to be even more special as time goes by.

Has this win given you fresh objectives for this season?

Monaco really is a circuit apart and we’ll be coming up against a totally different track next weekend.

We’ll need to work hard to stay at the top, and I’ll be fighting for a place on the podium in every race.

We’ll just need to see where we are at the end of the year.

e comptez pas sur Kevin Magnussen pour partir dans de longues tirades. Il y a un petit quelque chose de Kimi Räikkönen chez le Danois, et pas seulement parce qu’il est lui aussi blond aux yeux bleus ! A 20 ans, il affiche une intense détermination pour rejoindre les rangs de la F1 et marcher sur les traces de son père Jan, qui avait pris le départ de 25 GP dans les années 90. « C’est un vrai Nordique ! Sous un premier abord qui peut paraître froid, il est en réalité très chaleureux », corrige François Sicard, Directeur général de DAMS. « Son principal trait de caractère est la détermination, mais il a su se laisser ‘apprivoiser’ par l’équipe. » Après s’être révélé en Formula Renault 2.0 puis en F3, Kevin a reçu le soutien du McLaren Young Driver Programme dès 2010. Septième de la Formula Renault 3.5 Series l’an passé, il avait justement réalisé son meilleur week-end à SpaFrancorchamps, avec deux pole positions et une victoire.

Cette saison doit être celle de la confirmation, et pour l’instant elle se déroule sans véritable accroc.

Après cinq courses toutes terminées dans les points, Kevin fait mentir les pronostics qui convergeaient vers un duel Vandoorne /

Da Costa. « Je ne lis pas vraiment la presse, donc je ne sais pas trop ce qu’il se disait », assène-t-il. « Je me concentre sur mon propre travail. Il y a beaucoup de pilotes de valeur dans ce championnat.

Pour le remporter, il faut marquer des points à chaque fois et gagner quand c’est possible. » « Sans être sereins, nous n’étions pas inquiets en voyant d’autres pilotes réaliser les meilleurs chronos cet hiver », complète François Sicard. « L’équipe et ses pilotes ont d’abord appris à se connaître.

Puis nous avons essayé beaucoup de choses, pour améliorer notre compréhension de la voiture. Parfois nous ne partions pas dans la bonne direction, mais nous savions que nous serions compétitifs en début de la saison. » Après deux deuxièmes places à Monza et une victoire à Motorland, Kevin a terminé quatrième à Monaco, résistant tout au long de la course aux attaques de Da Costa. « Il s’agit d’une bonne opération pour le championnat, mais trois pilotes ont été meilleurs que moi, je ne peux donc pas être complètement satisfait », reconnaît-il. « Je vais maintenant me préparer pour Spa, en passant un maximum de temps avec l’équipe au Mans. »

here is a touch of Kimi Raikkonen about Kevin Magnussen, and not just because the Dane too has blond hair and steely blue eyes. Like the flying Finn, the 20-year-old Magnussen is a man of few words and as determined as they come, his burning ambition being to scale the heights and make it to F1, just like his father Jan, who appeared in 25 grands prix back in the 1990s. “He’s a typical Nordic type,” said DAMS General Manager Francois Sicard.

“He might seem cool to begin with but he’s actually very warm and approachable. The main thing about him is his determination, though his team have managed to mellow him a little bit.”

After making his breakthrough in Formula Renault 2.0 and then F3, the Dane earned a place in the McLaren Young Driver Programme in 2010. In finishing seventh in last year’s Formula Renault 3.5 Series, he enjoyed a hugely productive weekend at Spa-Francorchamps, recording two pole positions and a race win.

This season is one in which he was expected to fulfil his potential, and the Dane is doing just that. In among the points in each of this year’s five races, Magnussen has defied all predictions of a private battle between Vandoorne and Da Costa. “I don’t really read the

press, so I don’t know what people have been saying,” commented the man himself. “I just focus on what I have to do. There are a lot of very good drivers in this championship and to win it you have to go out and score points every time and win races whenever you get the chance to.”

“We weren’t absolutely relaxed but we weren’t worried either when we saw other drivers posting the fastest times this winter,” added Sicard. “The team and the drivers were just getting to know each other at first and then we started trying a lot of things out so we could get a better understanding of the car. There were times when we weren’t always heading in the right direction but we knew we would be competitive at the start of the season.”

After scoring two second places at Monza and a win at Motorland, Magnussen finished fourth at Monaco, successfully holding off a series of attacks by title rival Da Costa. “It was a good weekend in terms of the championship but there were three drivers who did better than me, so I can’t be entirely satisfied,” said the Dane, who is not about to start resting on his laurels. “I’m now going to get ready for Spa by spending as much time as I can with the team at Le Mans.”

Rester avec l’équipe Tech 1 Racing te donne-t-il un avantage?

Je m’entendais très bien avec l’équipe. Après avoir surmonté ensemble les épreuves de l’an dernier, rester chez eux me paraissait le choix judicieux, sinon évident ! J’ai d’excellents rapports avec chacun des membres du team et il est important de construire sur des bases saines.

KEEPING THE FAITH

A 18 ans, ta carrière mêle monoplace avec l’Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 et d’autres expériences comme le GT ou le Trophée Andros électrique. As-tu le caractère d’un touche-à-tout ?

J’ai le virus de la passion ! Etre derrière un volant me motive énormément, c’est l’endroit où je me sens le mieux. Lorsque j’ai l’opportunité de rouler, il m’est difficile de dire non. Mon objectif reste la F1 mais je me fais plaisir, encore plus quand le succès est au rendez-vous !

Vainqueur de la Formula Renault 3.5 Series en 2008 et actuel pilote titulaire en F1 avec Caterham F1 Team, Giedo Van der Garde sera également présent à Spa.

Taking over where Daniel Ricciardo left off at Motorland Aragon, Sebastien Buemi will be entertaining the fans in the Infiniti Red Bull Racing RB8. 2008 Formula Renault 3.5 Series champion and current Caterham F1 Team driver Giedo Van der Garde will also be on duty at Spa.

Matthieu, it must have felt great to get back to winning ways?

Absolutely! Last season was very tough but I never let my head drop. The team and my entourage opened my eyes about all the work I had to and it’s brought results. I hope the bad times are behind me now because I’m thrilled with the way I’ve started the year. There’s still a long way to go this season, and I’m going to approach each meeting as if it were the start of a new championship.

Has staying with Tech 1 Racing worked to your advantage?

I have a very good understanding with the team. We worked together to overcome last year’s challenges and staying with them seemed to me to be the right choice, if not an obvious one. I’ve got a fantastic relationship with every member of the team and it’s important to build on a solid base.

You’re 18 and you’ve already had experience of single-seater racing in Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 as well as GT and electric cars in the Andros Trophy. Would you describe yourself as a Jack of all trades?

I love the thrill of it. I get a huge rush when I’m at the wheel and there’s no place where I’m happier. Whenever I get a chance to drive I just can’t say no. My objective is still F1 but I’m having fun at the moment, especially with this recent success.

Matthieu, renouer avec la victoire a dû te faire le plus grand bien ?

Evidemment ! La saison passée a vraiment été difficile mais je n’ai jamais baissé les bras. L’équipe et mon entourage m’ont ouvert les yeux sur le travail à fournir et cela se traduit par des résultats. J’espère désormais que la mauvaise passe est derrière moi car je suis vraiment content de ce début de saison. La saison est encore longue et je vais attaquer chaque meeting comme si un nouveau championnat débutait.
