2019 IN NUMBERS Giving • How Rangi is preparing for future generations

In 1889, the Gibson sisters established Rangi Ruru with the vision to provide the very best education for girls. The School is constantly striving to build on that vision, providing scholarship opportunities, delivering personalised learning programmes and providing the quality of buildings and facilities that match and support the exceptional education the girls receive. With the majority of the school’s tuition fees directed towards staff and operational costs, Rangi Ruru relies on the support and generosity of its community to help

SUPPORTING LEGACY Without a familial connection to Rangi Ruru my wife and I toured the campus and spoke to the Rangi staff about what Rangi could offer our daughter. We were impressed by what we saw and what we heard. We wanted our daughter to have the skills, knowledge and experiences that would support her to become a confident, mature and humble young woman. The focus on a bespoke education for girls, within a culture that enables the discovery of courage and success while making life-long friends, has given our daughter and us so much more than our first Rangi visit promised. Through our daughter and her friends we have seen the continuing growth of the Gibson Sisters’ wonderful legacy. It is a privilege to be able to support this legacy beyond our daughter’s time at Rangi. BOB PENTER- Chief Executive of The Waikato River Authority, Deputy Chair of Rangi Ruru Board of Governors Bob and Adeline Penter have three children. Their daughter, Bella, boarded at Rangi from 2015-2019 and is now studying law at Victoria University. Their two sons board at Christ’s College. 8

GENEROSITY OF SPIRIT Head of Community and Global Connections • Tania Morgan gives an overview of the generosity of spirit that our Rangi community showed in the past year. As in previous years, we continued to have special relationships with a number of organisations • such as Ronald McDonald House, City Mission, YMCA, Cholmondeley Childrens’ Home, World Vision, Christchurch City Council, Christchurch Hospital and Nurse Maude Hospital. In addition, we supported many worthy local charities including KidsCan, Aviva, St John, The Cancer Society, Pillars and the SPCA. The highlights of 2019 include: 32 students volunteered on March

The Year 12 and Year 13 students are also encouraged to seek their own opportunities for doing community service and it was pleasing to see the breadth of activities (both in and out of school) that the students were involved in. Thank you to those people who gave in 2019 through monetary donations, gifts-in-kind and volunteering in support of the above initiatives.

SUSTAINABILITY REPORT 2019 was a very successful year for sustainability endeavours at the school • Kate Rivers, Director of Sustainability, looks back at some of the initiatives that contributed positively to our Rangi community as well as the community around us. Each year, Rangi finds new ways to contribute positively to sustainability, and 2019 saw some true highlights, which included being acknowledged as national finalists in the Sustainable Business Network Awards and KNZB Sustainable Schools Awards. We were also honoured to have Jane Goodall and her New Zealand Foundation spend time at Rangi. We hosted a Youth Environmental Leaders forum with representatives from across New Zealand and formed relationships with the University of Canterbury Sustainability and Political Studies lecturers and students, NGO’s and business. Further highlights from throughout the year included: The establishment of an Eco-Action Nursery to grow native plants for the red zone, potting over 1000 native seedlings into bags and planting 800 natives at QE2 in collaboration with Christ’s College and Shirley Boys’ High. We will meet our collective goal to plant 5000 native trees in the red zone in the next three years. We are grateful to have support for this project by way of a sponsorship from House of Travel Merivale.

Students led initiatives including working

closely

with

Women’s

Refuge and Battered Women’s Trust to provide fruit and vegetables for two local safe houses in Merivale. A vegetable garden was established, and 31 pumpkins were grown and used to make baby food and soup as well as other fruit and vegetables which were donated. Clothes and books were also collected and delivered to Battered Women’s Trust for use in their emergency centre.

values

committee does and defines how the committee operates in the community. While all of the values are important, the one that stands out in terms of our constitution and mission statement, is the “G”. Generosity of Spirit — service to others, compassion, tolerance, unselfishness. RROGA endeavours to uphold these values as it oversees the disbursements of monies out into the Rangi community in a way which benefits as many students as possible. During the last financial year $49,510.00 was distributed by way of scholarships, prizes and capital contributions. In this way, the entire RROGA community are not only saying thank you to the education that the school gave us, but also a passionate “make the most of it right now”, to current and future generations of young women.

LEGACY SOCIETY Leaving a gift in your Will is an opportunity to continue to support Rangi Ruru after you are gone, or to support the school as you have always wanted to but been unable to in your lifetime. Rangi Ruru recognises that many people have already thought of and/or are intending on leaving a gift to the school. We celebrate this generosity through a special group known as the Gibson Circle. We are incredibly grateful to all those who have already given or who recognise the importance of such a gift and have pledged their support. Thank you for your generosity and your belief in what we do.

THANK YOU We thank you for your support. Rangi Ruru relies on the support of its community to help prepare for future generations, seize opportunities for Rangi’s continued advancement and to ensure the Gibson Sister’s vision continues to soar. We have endeavoured to include everyone who gave to the School in 2019. If we have accidentally omitted your name, please get in touch with the Development Office.

SPONSORS We would like to thank our generous sponsors for helping enrich school initiatives and programmes benefiting our students, staff and the Rangi community.

GRANTS Thanks also to the following Trusts for generously supporting the School and its endeavours.
