Suicide after hacking girlfriend to death

I didn’t even know the girl, and I was shocked when I saw her ID and realised that she was only 16 years old.” The latest incident has strained the family, who had a string of bad luck in the past. In 2012, the family lost a member, Samuel Chauke, a businessman in Gauteng, who was hijacked and shot dead by unknown assailants.

Two months ago, Samuel’s mother also died because of complications that developed after the death of the son.

Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi of the Limpopo police confirmed the incident and said they had opened a murder case. “Such incidents are on the increase in the Malamulele area and we are appealing to men to seek professional help when they have relationship or family problems.

Killing your partner is not the way to go as help is available from state organisations and the private sector,” he said.

A former convict, who was out on parole, hacked his girlfriend to death before committing suicide by hanging himself from a tree at his home.

Thomas Chauke (32) of Basani village in Malamulele killed his girlfriend, Vongani Chauke, who is believed to be from Greenfarm, in his house on Thursday. He is alleged to have taken the 16-year-old girl from her home under the pretext that they were going to Johannesburg.

His sister, Sophie Chauke, who is a traditional healer and stays in the same village, said that her brother had been arrested and served three sentences of theft, robbery and rape in the past. According to her, the latest incident has become a burden on the family.

“Now he killed his teenage girlfriend and committed suicide, leaving me to bury him and take care of his son. He has done many bad things. Because he was my brother, I always supported him in anything he was doing, and I even bought him equipment to continue with his panelbeating business. I did everything to help him and he thanked me by killing a woman in my mother’s house,” said the sobbing Chauke.

Ramuisi family looking for grandfather The Ramuisi family in Shanzha are frantically looking for their 94-year-old grandfather. He went missing on 18 September.

According to the information made available

by Const Tsietsi Lamola of the Limpopo Police’s communication services, Mr Tshamano Johannes Ramuisi told his family that he was going to look for cattle at the nearby grazing camp. "When he hadn't returned home by the following morning, the family decided to report the matter to the police," said Lamola. The missing old man's son, Edson Ramuisi, said that the family had been shocked and dejected after they noticed that Ramuisi wasn't coming back. "We looked everywhere and enquired from all our relatives to find out if he hadn't visited, but we couldn't get any indication of what had happened to him," said Edson.

He explained that the family had also received information from two boys, who said that they had

seen the old man on the day that he reportedly went missing. The two friends were on their way to go fishing at a local stream, when they saw Ramuisi in the vicinity of the Shanzha and Ha-Manyuwa demarcation line. "They told us that they were not sure where else he might have gone from that area," a worried Edson said.

Thieves now target parked vehicles Not only the police are at their wits' end with petty criminals.

Businesses in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) have now also opted to become crime fighters in an effort to curb the rise in break-ins.

The latest actions follow after more cases were reported of thieves breaking into parked vehicles and stealing valuables such as cash, cell phones and laptops. Over the last few weeks, more and more residents have become victim to these criminals.

Last week, Peter Straughan from Leshiba Wilderness was outraged when he returned to his bakkie

after shopping to find his petrol container missing. Straughan said the rope with which the container had been fastened onto the bakkie had been cut loose. “How are you supposed to do shopping?

You can’t lock everything inside of your car, and even then these criminals will break your window to get at your valuables,” he said.

This new onslaught has forced some businesses to appoint private vehicle guards to watch over their clients’ vehicles.

“Safa official swore at me” A correspondent of Limpopo Mirror who mainly specialises in sport writing, Kaizer Nengovhela, was allegedly insulted and threatened on Tuesday, when trying to gather information on a story concerning disgruntled soccer teams.

Some of the teams in the Safa Vhembe MMK Insurance league complained about the delay in the printing of players' registration cards. They maintained that they had not received players' registration cards and that this was delaying the matches as no player can go on the pitch without a registration card from the league.

Nengovhela then contacted the chairperson of Safa Vhembe's competition committee, Mulimisi Muneri, to find out what was actually happening, and to verify if some of the teams had indeed not received the registration cards. “Muneri got so furious and asked if I wanted to become the spokesperson for the teams,” said Nengovhela. “I told him that I am only a journalist and that he should respond to my questions appropriately. He didn't want to listen to me. He shouted 'bulls***t' and

Young soldier killed in accident A young soldier from the region, who died while serving her country, was laid to rest in her home town.

The 21-year-old Hulisani Tshiambwa of Tshirolwe Village, in the Nzhelele area, was buried during a semi-military funeral on Saturday, 21 September. According to the communication officer of the Makhado Air Force Base, Sergeant Thomas Mulaudzi, Hulisani was killed in a motor vehicle accident while on assignment near the Mozambique border.

She was part of the South African Infantry Battalion’s (2 SAI BN) Alpha Company that was deployed on the border between South Africa and Mozambique.

She, together with the company, was deployed to protect the border from the influx of illegal immigrants and smugglers. While driving in a Samil truck back to the company’s base, the driver of the truck lost control and the truck overturned. Hulisani was killed instantly.

Hulisani was scheduled to return home on 26 October.

She was born and bred in Tshirolwe. After completing her primary education at Shirolwe Primary School, Hulisani completed her higher education at Nngweni High School in 2010.

Officials arrested for allegedly demanding bribes Two Zimbabwean police officers and an immigration officer deployed at Beit Bridge border post appeared in court last week for allegedly taking a R500 bribe from five undocumented immigrants, who crossed into that country from South Africa illegally.

Robson Tapfuma (30), an immigration official, Rangarirai Makuvaza (30) and

Meluleki Sibanda (30), who are both police officers, were arrested by the police's crack team, soon after taking the bribe on 23 September.

The three appeared before Magistrate Innocent Bepura last Thursday on charges of criminal abuse of duty as public officers. The case was postponed to 7 October and the trio was granted bail of

US$200 each. Tapfuma, Makuvaza and Sibanda were also ordered to reside at their given address and not to interfere with ongoing police investigations as part of their bail conditions.

Under the provisions of the Immigration Act, all illegal immigrants coming into the country are liable to pay a fine of R100 or US$10 for illegal entry.

Muvhango actress empowers the Sinthumule youth As another way of investing in the future, the SABC 2 TV drama Muvhango actress, Millicent Makhado Mothiba, is empowering young children from three Sinthumule schools, Maluta, Manaledzi and Jonathan Thifhulufheli, with skills.

She has been involved in TV drama for several years and according to her, it is time she gives something back to the

community. She is teaching rural youths the basics of acting.

She said she does not only teach drama but other skills as well. “Besides drama, I also teach these young stars script writing for radio and TV and theatre performance.

My aim is to make sure that they reach their dreams, and I want to create job opportunities in the performing arts in-

dustry,” she said.

"I am happy about the interest the children are showing in this project, because it has now turned into an after-school centre," she said proudly. According to her, Sinthumule and surrounding areas have massive potential, but the lack of mentors is hampering the youngsters’ development.

“It will never happen again,” says Phaswana after outburst which infuriated the DA. “His choice of words during his address are not befitting for an address meant for our learners,” said Ms Desiree van der Walt, DA Limpopo Education spokesperson.

“What happened at Eric Louw High School is very much unfortunate and regrettable,” Dr Phaswana said in a statement last week. “I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to the honourable MEC for Education, Me Dikeledi Magadzi, the HOD, Senior Management and all my colleagues.

I also would like to apologise to learners, teachers and parents of Eric Louw High School.”

Dr Phaswana said that as a circuit manager it was expected of him to display the highest professional

standards and ethics at all times. “As an adult professional, I should not have allowed my emotions to get out of hand, irrespective of the cause. I have erred. I am now asking for forgiveness from everyone affected,” he said.

Speaking to the Limpopo Mirror for the first time after weeks of mixed reactions from the social media and people with interest, Dr Phaswana did not want to say much. He quoted from the letter to the Galatians, which says: "My brothers, if someone is caught in any kind of wrongdoing, those of you who are spiritual should set him right, but you must do it in a gentle way. And keep an eye on yourselves, so that you will not be tempted, too" (Galatians 6:1).

The circuit manager of the Vhembe Education District, Dr Sampie Phaswana, apologised for his recent outburst at the Eric Louw High School in Musina and promised it will “never happen again”.

Dr Phaswana made the news headlines a few weeks ago, following a visit to the Musina high school. He apparently lost his cool after witnessing some unacceptable behaviour during the matriculants’ “40 Days” celebrations. The Democratic Alliance later laid hate speech charges against Phaswana at the Musina Magistrate’s court.

The school’s matriculants were subjected to an almost eight-minute-long tongue-lashing from Dr Phaswana, marked by foul language and racial remarks in both Afrikaans and English. The outburst was recorded by one of the matriculants.

In the recording, Dr Phaswana can be heard saying: “But if there is a Grade 12 that doesn’t want to be here and he bends every rule of the school, God help me, you will be sorry! Because I am not going to have mercy on anybody who bends the rules ...”

Dr Phaswana then warns the matriculants not to take him on, referring to someone who “messed up” with him: “There is a councillor principal who messed up with me in one of my meetings ... he did not know who he was messing up with, right now, nobody will touch him! He is a no no. Nobody will touch him because, by the time I am done with him, he will not get a cent, nothing ... I am not finished with him ... he is crying now but I am not yet done ... So I got in a male Afrikaner lawyer who hates blacks ... If you are a white person, I will get in a black Afrikaner lawyer who hates whites, so that then all the scores of all the battles which were fought long ago, there we will fight it in court. By the time we are done you won’t have money ... you won’t have money ... and your future will be down the drain ... no matter how good you are today ... If we start fighting and you are not having any matric, what is going to happen? Justice Mabuda passes away More sex crimes reported in Limpopo Province The well-known former manager of Coca Cola Fortune, Justice Mabuda (61) of Phiphidi, passed away in the Wilgers Hospital in Pretoria after a long illness.

A family member, Mr Takalani Mabuda, said the family was shocked and in great pain after losing one of their beloved members.

"We are greatly saddened by his death, but we will accept it because God’s will has been done."

He added that Mr Mabuda had been a community leader who was always prepared to help the young ones as a loyal member of the community.

A former co-worker, Mr Geoffrey Tshibvumo, says Mabuda was a man of vision. "We will always remember him for his hard work, commitment and dedication," he said."Most

of the development that occurred at the company was his ideas. He loved development. We have really lost a charismatic, disciplined and enthusiastic leader," Tshibvumo said.

Mr Mabunda is survived by his wife and three children. A memorial service will be held at his house at Phiphidi today (Friday) at 18:00.

Mabuda will be buried on Saturday at 06:00.

September saw the release of the latest provincial crime statistics, and although the figures showed only a slight increase from previous years, they still offered little consolation to Soutpansberg residents.

Limpopo Police Commissioner Lt Genl Fanie Masemola released the crime statistics for the period from April 2012 until March 2013 on Wednesday, 25 September, in Polokwane.

During this period, the total number of cases reported at the Makhado SAPS increased from 2 481 to 2 520. In Musina, reported cases increased from 2 207 to 2 431 and in Levubu from 1 223 cases to 1 318.

Violent crimes like murder did not show a remarkable increase. In Musina, the total number of murder cases decreased from 13 in 2012 to nine in 2013. Levubu had one fewer murder case than the previous year’s five.

In the Makhado (Louis Trichardt) area, murder cases increased from five to 12 by the end of March 2013.

We ask you to please not use the Press Council

T

he word “boycott” should never be used without careful consideration. Much like the term “press freedom”, it has different meanings to different people. A Google definition states that boycott means to “withdraw from commercial or social relations with (a country, organization, or person) as a punishment or protest.”

In a truly bizarre step, our two small newspapers have decided to appeal to readers to boycott the South African press regulation system. We ask readers not to make use of the press ombudsman’s office and not to use this body to complain about human rights abuses by big media houses.

We do this because we really believe that a system of self- or co-regulation is the best way to protect freedom of speech in our democracy. If, however, the system loses its integrity, it needs to be severely criticised and people should stop using it until such time as steps have been taken to restore the trust.

Before explaining why we make this strange request, I must mention that the fault for all this does not lie with the Press Council SA (PCSA) and especially not with the people working there. The only criticism that they should get is for being too lenient and allowing the bullies in the industry to pressurize them into not protecting the integrity of the Press Code.

Let me start by explaining what press regulation entails, especially in our own (fragile) democracy. In its own words: “The Council, the Ombudsman and the Appeals Panel are an independent co-regulatory mechanism set up by the print media to provide impartial, expeditious and cost-effective adjudication to settle disputes between newspapers and magazines, on the one hand, and members of the public, on the other, over the editorial content of publications.

The mechanism is based on two pillars: a commitment to freedom of expression, including freedom of the press, and to excellence in journalistic practice and ethics.”

The inherent promise being made is that members of the public do not have to revert to expensive lawyers and advocates to protect their rights. These rights include the right to dignity and the right to privacy. Ordinary members of the public should never fear the press, for the press will always strive to maintain the highest ethical standards. If not, they will be held accountable …

Well, unfortunately this is not the truth. The scoundrels in the industry succeed in manipulating the process and literally get away with (character) murder. Not that South Africa is unique in this respect. Abuses by big media players have led to inquiries in both the United Kingdom and Australia over the past couple of years. In both countries the issue of press regulation came under scrutiny and in the UK the system is in the process of being dramatically reformed.

Many a reader may be asking by this time, why the change of heart? Why now attack a system that we helped to shape? Well, it’s because we were forced to see things from a different angle, namely that of someone who was involved in a complaint about the abuses of a big media player. In this specific case the media player was one of Media 24’s gutter press publications, Sondag.

The first anomaly with regards to the PCSA process is that if you complain about the conduct of a big media player such as Media 24, you do not deal with their editors (as the procedure states you should).

You deal with their lawyers and these are people extremely experienced in fending off what they perceive as a liability. If the complaints procedure states

Other criminal activities that have increased at an alarming rate in the Makhado policing area were burglaries at family homes. For Makhado (Louis Trichardt) the number of cases has risen from 232 in the previous year to 307. This intrusive crime has also increased in the Musina policing area from 222 to 270. In Levubu, the same crime has shown a slight decrease from 167 to 157.

During this period, burglaries at business premises remained high. In Makhado, the number of cases reported decreased somewhat from 169 to 167. In Levubu, the cases increased from 83 to 95 and in Musina from 75 to 88. Whether these figures for the Makhado SAPS are an accurate reflection of the situation is not cer-

A request to the Chair of the Appeals Committee to force Media 24 to be held accountable was turned down after two months. The appeal was unsuccessful because it was not clear to the judge who the complainant in the case was.

A former press ombudsman, Mr Joe Thloloe, once remarked: “This system is not about bureaucracy – it is about ‘excellence in journalistic practice and ethics’.” (Berger, 2009). If only this wisdom could have been present today.

The sad reality is that actions such as these strengthen the call by some politicians to have the industry regulated by government. The resolutions taken in 2007 at the Polokwane conference still haunts the industry, especially the threat of setting up a Media Appeals Tribunal (MAT) with statutory powers. At that stage, a number of “experts” ridiculed the ANC’s point of view and made it out to be a way to stifle any criticism. Perhaps it was, but perhaps not.

In Australia, an independent media inquiry was launched in September 2011, which was headed by Judge Raymond Finkelstein. It examined the Australian media industry’s regulatory framework and reported back to the government in February 2012. The issues highlighted, which are just as relevant to our own industry, are that the press: * wielded enormous power for its own ends * was subservient to big business and put commercial interest ahead of editorial policy * resisted social change * paid more attention to the sensational than the significant * had become a danger to public morals * had unjustifiably invaded peoples privacy

that the editor or in his absence the sub-editor should answer the complaint, it is interpreted that the procedure doesn’t prohibit the use of lawyers.

It’s like walking unarmed into a negotiating room where the other party has a team of armed guards. Nothing in the procedure prohibits them from being there and doing the talking, they state, and the Press Council meekly agrees.

After the prescribed seven days during which the media player must answer, they can merely indicate that it’s not enough time. They do not supply reasons, as requested by the procedure, and again the public advocate condones this.

If the complainant becomes pushy and insists that the big media player be held accountable, things turn really nasty.

With few excuses left, the bully resorts to technicalities and one of these lie in Section 1.6 of the complaints procedure. This “escape clause” states that the Press Council must withdraw if a matter is pending before a court of law. Seeing that the complainant exercised his or her constitutional right and chose to have the complaint heard by the ombudsman and not in any court, this provides a bit of a dilemma. The solution is, fortunately, not too hard to find – the big media player simply gives its attorneys instructions to sue the complainant!

This, of course, creates an ethical dilemma for the industry, but it’s seemingly of little concern to Media 24, which is by far the biggest publisher in the country. Their actions, however, mean that the industry indulges in hypocrisy.

In Limpopo, the total number of cases reported decreased by 8.2%. At the Makhado SAPS the total number of stock theft cases also decreased from 40 last year to 26. The same cannot be said about Levubu (7 to 12) and Musina (16 to 17).

This has caused real hardship and, on occasion, wreaked havoc with the lives of innocent people whose rights and liberties have been disdained. This is not just the famous but ordinary members of the public, caught up in events (many of them, truly tragic) far larger than they could cope with but made much, much worse by press behaviour that, at times, can only be described as outrageous.”

It is extremely sad that one has to say that the same is happening in South Africa.

Certain members of the press (very few) are considering themselves to be bigger than the Press Code. The Press Council does not hold them accountable. Even if these are isolated cases, it makes very little difference. If these unscrupulous cowards (because the culprits are nothing less than cowards) get away with a single human rights abuse, it should be unacceptable. Even worse is that these cowards sit in their Johannesburg and Cape Town offices and prey upon ordinary citizens. They are afraid of the rich, the ones who can afford expensive lawyers to try and hit back. They try to make entertaining caricatures of ordinary people, and when these people complain, they hide behind claims of freedom of expression.

Newspapers such as our own that function in small communities have to face the consequences of abuses by big media. By their reckless behaviour they create a sense

of revulsion among ordinary people, to such an extent that journalists are feared by readers and ostracised. This, again, is not limited to our country.

The Leveson inquiry made some interesting remarks about the regional press: “Although accuracy and similar complaints are made against local newspapers, the criticisms of culture, practices and ethics of the press that have been raised in this Inquiry do not affect them: on the contrary, they have been much praised.”

Our call to people to boycott the current press regulatory system is a very small gesture to voice our contempt for what these industry bullies are doing.

It will make little difference to the big media players, because we are so small that our publications don’t even register on their radar, but we believe it is the right thing to do.

At the same time, we fully respect every reader’s choice in this regard. Should a reader be upset about something that we publish, they should feel free to use whatever mechanism they feel is proper. Should a complainant opt for the Press Council, we will abide by that and do our utmost to resolve it via this route. We do, however, appeal to readers to not use this mechanism and rather contact us directly. We promise to go out of our way to listen to any complaints and act in an ethical manner.

Finally, we are working hard behind the scenes to pressurize the regulatory body to restructure again, with more measures put in place to stop big media from getting away with such abuses. We cannot allow the regulatory body to be (to use British Labour leader Ed Miliband’s expression) “a toothless poodle”.

Family want answers after leader’s death

On Friday, 20 September, the commanding officer of the Air Force Base (AFB) Makhado, Brig Genl Schalk van Heerden, awarded medals of long and efficient service to members of AFB Makhado and Hoedspruit. It has been more than a month since the death of Vha-Musanda Mapikule Richard Tshivhase of Vhufulwi village.

He mysteriously went missing and his body was found three days later in a plantation near his home. Now his family is looking for answers regarding his death.

Mr Maambele Tshivhase, the chief’s brother, claims that his brother’s death is part of a plot meant to destroy his family. He added that the autopsy conducted had revealed that his brother had been killed in a fire, and he appealed to the public with any information regarding his brother’s death to provide it to the police.

When the deceased went missing earlier last month (8 September), communities in the area went on a massive search in the nearby villages for almost three days.

He was found dead later in the evening of the third day in the same area that the communities had searched before.

According to his brother, Vha-Musanda was murdered and the fire was used to destroy the evidence of his murder and the circumstances of his death.

“We need the police to establish an investigation team that will get to the bottom of the matter,” he said. He said that he believed the

truth would prevail and justice would be done.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the Thohoyandou police, Maj Mashudu Malelo, insisted that the investigation was underway.

Vha-Musanda Mapikule Richard Tshivhase participated in various activities, such as landscaping and environmental conservation, for the past three decades.

He also served as the president of the Northern region agricultural farmers union for smallholding commercial farmers and as the vice-chairperson of the Vhembe biosphere reserve management committee.

“But, due to some unforeseen circumstances, it was not solved and the Vhembe District Municipality as the competent functionary is working on that.

Currently, we will be continuing to use chlorine to kill off the smell.”

New house for Hamakuvha family The family of Ms Salphinah Ramashia (49) of Hamakhuvha outside Thohoyandou, who were promised a house a year ago, were in a joyful mood this week when Limpopo Mirror paid them a visit.

They had just received a brand new four-roomed house, better than the RDP standard-issue houses.

The house has been donated by the contractors who were contracted to build the local Makhuvha Stadium by the Thulamela municipality.

The foundation was laid amidst fanfare by the contrac-

tors, the local traditional leader, municipal officials, the senior traditional leader of the area, Vho Thovhele Gole Mphaphuli, and other community members.

That was during the Mandela 67 minutes in 2012.

The house was never built and a foundation slab was all that was left for the family. During this year’s Mandela Day celebrations, Limpopo Mirror paid the family a visit, only to find a pile of bricks and the same foundation that was constructed last year. Ms Ramashia then described her disappointment and Mirror ran a story, publicizing

her plight.

Thulamela Municipality confirmed that there had been some problems and promised to do a follow-up. The municipality also gave the assurance that the house would finally be built.

True to their promise, an official from the municipality called to say that the house was completed.

When this paper visited the family last weekend, we were met with smiling faces.

The family has a brightly painted and very decent four-roomed house, where the mother now has privacy and the children have ample room to do their school work. The house has been furnished and more furniture is still to come.

Ramanyimi could not hide her excitement.

Musina pupils to represent country Four Grade 10 history pupils from Musina High School will represent South Africa in Tanzania and Angola after they had performed extremely well during the Schools Heritage Educational Debate Programme at Marekele National Park in Thabazimbi last week.

Organized by the National Heritage Council (NHC) and the Department of Education, the aim of the initiative is to create a stimulating learning experience while, at the same time, teaching young people to preserve their culture and heritage. Pupils from all nine provinces of South Africa were competing on the topic: “Endangered intangible and tangible cultural heritage.”

As part of recognizing their hard work, the four achievers were paraded in front of all the pupils and teachers during the assembly on Tuesday. The

principal, Mr Abram Legavha, also handed them certificates of appreciation. One of the pupils, Watson Chuma, said he was happy that he was going to represent South Africa on foreign soil. He said that, during his presentation at the competitions, he stressed the importance of heritage because it can unite people from different backgrounds. “Heritage is important mainly because the spirit and direction of the nation are founded upon it and reflected in its historic origin. It is also important for future generations as it gives them a sense of belonging, preventing them from joining the wrong company and makes them feel that they are part of something.”

Another participant, Thapelo Machacha, said: “When we learn about other cultures and heritages and mix it with our own, we understand ourselves better in life.

Not everyone feels a connection with their cultural heritage, but many people do after taking part in initiatives like this one. Some may think traditions are archaic and no longer relevant, and that they are unnecessary during these modern times. It is therefore very important to teach our people that knowing our traditions and cultures have many benefits for us as a nation.” Grade 10 history teacher Mr Amon Rantsu, who also accompanied the pupils to Thabazimbi, added that the school was very proud of the four pupils “and we have no doubt that they will represent us well in Tanzania and Angola.

Through their debates, they have taught us that culture can give people a connection to certain social values, beliefs, religions, and customs. This allows them to identify with others of similar mindsets and backgrounds.”

The nine people who reached the final stage each received a R500 grocery voucher from Spar.

Work commences on Nancefield’s park Much to the delight of the local residents, the long-awaited construction of Musina Nancefield Extension 8’s public park in ward 5 has started.

The project comes after various public participation meetings where community members submitted project proposals to the Musina Municipality that are meant to improve their lives.

Good news is that the park is situated in a place where some community members used to practice illegal dumping and this will help to improve the lifestyles of the local people.

The park consists of ablution, play, and relaxation facilities and drinking fountains. The total project value for the whole initiative is R1,3 million and the anticipated completion date is end of December this year.

Municipal spokesperson Wil-

son Dzebu says the municipality implements projects based on the needs of the local people. He says local people have been requesting the municipality to provide them with recreational facilities for some time. “We are very happy because we have finally delivered what our people want.”

He says parks are a tangible reflection of the quality of life in any community. “They provide identity for citizens and are a major factor in the perception of quality of life. This park will provide a gathering place for families and social groups, as well as for individuals of all ages and economic status. Parks and recreation programmes provide places for health and well-being that are accessible by persons in our municipality.”

He says the municipality strongly links access to parks

and recreation opportunities to reductions in crime and juvenile delinquency.

“Young people will have a place to play and chances of involving themselves in criminal activities are limited.”

He adds that the construction of the park will also assist in keeping the environment clean. “In fact, conserving land for people where they live, work and play is often the most cost-efficient and effective way to achieve a host of environmental-health and related public-policy objectives.”

A 16-year-old resident, Hulisani Rambuda, says that they used to struggle because there are limited recreational facilities in Musina. “Our lives will change as we will have somewhere to hang around after finishing our homework.”

Crime

Jailed for raping his 15-year-old niece A 33-year-old man from Muganiri village outside Beit Bridge was sentenced to an effective 18 years in jail for raping his 15-year-old niece and threatening to kill her.

The man, who cannot be named to protect the victim’s identity, pleaded not guilty to rape but was convicted by regional magistrate Mrs Judith Zvuyu on Friday.

He was sentenced to 20 years in jail, of which two years were conditionnaly suspended for five years.

In passing sentence, the magistrate stated that the complainant “takes you as the father and looks up to you for protection. You betrayed that trust by raping her.

You therefore deserve a deterrent sentence that will send a strong message to would-be offenders,” said Zvuyu.

The prosecutor, Ms Sophia Busumani, said that during the night of 19 April, the girl was sleeping in the dining room with her brothers, aged 10 and seven, when the accused, who is the victim’s uncle, arrived and opened

the door. He found the girl and her two brothers fast asleep.

The court was told that the man proceeded to where the girl was sleeping and woke her up.

The man then dragged her to her parents’ bedroom as the parents were away. He then undressed and raped her. After committing the offence, the man went on to threaten the victim with death if she reported the matter to anyone.

The girl reported the matter to the police and a manhunt was launched, leading to the man’s arrest.

Local blind music producer believes in creativity

Many functions were held last Tuesday in commemoration of Heritage Day. For some, it was a day for a braai and some indulged in traditional foods. Thohoyandou Pick and Pay Store staffers held theirs differently, with various cultures showcased in different dress codes.

The 25-year-old, dread­l ocked, softspoken Wanga Mukwevho is dressed in purplish designer trousers, shirt, shoes and dark eyeshades when we sit down for our interview at the residential house in Biaba, Nzhelele.

There’s only one word to sum up his appearance - handsome.

fore, he was part of the worship team where he played keyboard for the fully packed Higher Grace Church. “I learnt keyboard when I was still a young boy,” he said. “I was born a musician.”

Wanga is totally visually impaired and he has produced for top gospel singers such as Lufuno Dagada and Lucky Mdhluli. “I don’t allow my blindness to stay in my way and stop me from achieving my goals,” he says firmly. He maintains that he can produce across all genres. “I only listen to the sounds of a particular type of music and the next thing, I can produce my original music in that genre,” says Wanga. “As a producer, my work is to do vocal training, vocal coaching, vocal arrangement and musical arrangement.”

This high-spirited man is not the kind of artist who sits down first to plan a song; he says that preparation does limit the artist’s abilities and capabilities. “I believe in creativity,” he states.

In life, Wanga has had his share of pain, but he has always found strength in his family and friends, and from God. He lost his mother in 2003, and his father passed away in 2005. “I had to learn to accept that death had robbed me of the people who meant a lot to me,” Wanga reveals.

In 2011, he was invited to play keyboard by the illustrious gospel singer Hlengiwe Mhlaba during her live performance Durban tour. “When I started learning to play keyboard, there were people who wondered if it could be possible for a blind person to learn to play a keyboard or a guitar, when that person can’t see the keys or the strings of a guitar,” he remembers.

“One of my purposes as an artist and a human being in a troubled society like ours, is to inject inspiration into people,” he adds. “I don’t believe in impossibilities.”

Wanga changes his tone and sounds very serious.

“Your gift can take you too far, but your character can determine your success or downfall,” he says.

“My advice to singers, and the youth as well, is this: Don’t change your way of living and start abusing alcohol and drugs because you have tasted fame.”

“Traditional healing a life saving practice” The Waterval Traditional Healers Association urged people to keep their traditions and norms as a way of preserving their culture and reclaiming their heritage.

During a Heritage Day event at Magangeni in Elim a fortnight ago, the association's chairperson, Vho-Linah Rambau, said that it was very sad to see young children, and grown-ups as well, shying away from practising their culture. “There are sicknesses

which the western medicine cannot cure, and people must accept that fact and seek help from a traditional healer,” said Rambau.

She advised people to stop ignoring their spiritual callings to become traditional healers.

“Traditional healing is a life-saving practice and not works of witchcraft, for that is what many people make you believe,” she explained. “If you have a calling to become a healer, you must not try to hide behind a veil of

denial.” She then reminded all people that indigenous games, such as khadi, tseretsere, ndode and mudzumbamo, are meant for both physical and mental exercise. “It makes me wonder what has become of today's children who no longer have or show any interest in these games,” she said.

“Maybe parents are to blame.

Let us play these games with our children, so that they can feel encouraged to play even when they are on their own.”

AFM Dzimauli opens new church centre

It has been a long eight-year journey of hard labour and dreams for the Apostolic Faith Mission Dzimauli Assembly, who decided that they needed a spacious and modern church where they could worship.

Their dreams came to fruition when they rejoiced last Tuesday during the opening of a new state-of-the-art church centre.

and internationally renowned speaker, Dr Mackson Maanzwane, described resident pastor Philemon Phuluwa as a hard worker and urged other pastors and churches to learn from him and his church.

“We have been working with this man for some time now. His cooperation goes beyond the church walls as he has made friends with different stakeholders inside and outside the church,” he added.

Phuluwa said it was exciting see how God had transformed their church.

“We started congregating in a shack,” he added. “We have a big church now and what we are praying for is that God will bless us and many turn to God’s fold as we have ample room for them here,” he said.

The quest for morality

The great scandal ...

Cheater? Who? Me? I have been coerced to do what I am doing.

Some would say "I have been pushed to do what I am doing".

Others will blame circumstances or others for cheating, but cheating is without doubt one of the biggest factors in the destruction of marriages.

Cheating, by both men and women, is causing lots of pain in many marriages and in the end, some end up divorcing or just living together whilst they have, for all intents and purposes, divorced.

You have couples who no longer share their bedroom but remain married for the sake of their children or for fear of sharing the wealth that they have accumulated together.

There are various reasons why men and women cheat on their spouses but I would like to reflect on the following: (1) Temptation: Men are easily tempted to cheat because of their roving eye. It is easier for a woman to catch the attention of a man than for a man to catch the attention of a woman (it does happen on the rare occasion). Temptation can be considered a "pull factor" as you are pulled to cheat by giving in to your evil desires; (2) Lack of good communication in a marriage has led to many finding comfort with men and women who speak openly and in a friendly manner to them; this will be considered a "push factor" since one is pushed away by one's spouse.

One other push factor will include, among others, (3) lack of real sexual intimacy in one’s marriage.

That is why it is important for a married couple to keep their linen clean and not deny each other conjugal rights. Some men are working overtime at work and just come home to sleep and not render any service sexually to their partners.

This pushes some women to cheat because of sexual starvation; (4) Marital conflicts might also contribute in a big way to why men

and women cheat. When you are fighting over whatever (money, children, attention, abuse, etc.), it is the right time for the devil to entrench the division and cause more harm by prompting you to seek solace elsewhere.

While it is easy to blame cheating on others, it is imperative to note that cheating can be beaten.

How do we overcome cheating?

There are a number of ways that we can share on this matter, but I have chosen to reflect on the following: (1) Be satisfied with what you have. Once you make your choice in terms of who must become your marriage partner, you need to be satisfied and live with your choice for the rest of your life. There are beautiful women and handsome men out there who will charm you to think otherwise, but it is important to always remind yourself that you have made your choice in the belief that God has brought you this person.

(2) Reflect on the aftermath of cheating, and you will be confronted with the truth that "naked beauty is like a shallow grave" waiting to consume you.

(3) Resist the devil as and when he tempts you; if you can’t fight him, then run just like Joseph, who refused the advances and seduction of Potiphar’s wife. Joseph in Genesis 39 was spared because he decided to run away. Run and do not look back!

(4) Prayer is more important in the whole process of doing away with cheating. Pray that the Spirit of God will empower you to say no.

(5) Play your brother’s keeper. It is important that, as human beings, we should stop encouraging one another to cheat, but instead when you get an opportunity to inculcate a culture of being faithful and true to your partner to do so unashamedly.

Police seize illegal cigarettes at border During a routine search exercise, the police uncovered illegal cigarettes stashed away in a hidden compartment of a bus travelling through the Beit

The value, according to provincial spokesperson Col Ronel Otto, is estimated at approximately R800 000.

The police made the discovery on Thursday, 26 September, while searching a passenger bus passing through the border in the early morning hours. When they started to search through the bus, they discovered a false compartment at the rear of the bus, in which was hidden hundreds of cartons of cigarettes. Otto confirmed that the two drivers of the bus, as well as the crew, were arrested and charged. The bus and the illegal cigarettes were handed over to the South African Revenue Services. The much-loved Zimbabwean king of sungura, Alick Macheso, who has travelled and performed in many parts of the world, will finally perform in Vhembe next Friday (11 October).

Macheso, who is an ambassador for the Red Cross and brand ambassador for one of Zimbabwe’s largest bakeries, Bakers Inn, will share the stage with one of the finest sons of the soil, reggae maestro Colbert Mukwevho.

The concert to be held at the 2010 Centre in Thohoyandou will see artists like Tshibulebule

of Rithelela fame, Sido and Manana, among others, showcasing their stuff before the entertainment-starved people of Thohoyandou. The event will start at 16:00.

From Thohoyandou, the artists will move to Polokwane for a show the following day.

Macheso and Mukwevo have sold many records all over and the show is as the result of pressure from their fans who want to see them performing live. “Fans are craving to see Macheso in person. He has a large following in Limpopo and all over the world. On the other

hand, Mukwevho is popular and has a large following wherever he goes. "Security will be very tight and we have made sure that the many cars expected have good parking in the area next to the venue,” added Murerwa.

Cultural dances at Londanani Centre While thousands of people from all over were celebrating Heritage Day recently, the Londonani Home-Based Care Centre at the Christian Worship Centre Church was embracing the Vhavenda culture through cultural dances.

Londanani is a Tshivenda word which means “take care of each other” and is the a brainchild of Pastor Ramudzuli Lehangwa.

He is determined to take care of poor and vulnerable children.

According to Lehangwa, Tshivenda dances such as tshigombela and tshifasi and singing zwidade songs are part of preserving Vhavenda culture and help young people to learn how to respect elderly people.

He added that during the cultural celebrations, four girls from the centre participated in voluntary virginity testing.

“We invited some of the nurses from Dzwerani clinic to come and help us with the testing of the girls,” said Lehangwa.

Mrs Ailfheli Mutele, a nurse at Dzwerani clinic outside Thohoyandou, said that they encouraged parents to take care of their girls and tell them about priding themselves on preserving their virginity.

The Vuvha Netball team beat Midoroni 19-6 and Madodonga 13-4. “We are very happy, because these were our first matches in the league and we hope to score well in the coming matches,” said Vuvha's Shelver Nembulu.

No need to panic says David Thidiela The chairman of Black Leopards, Mr David Thidiela, has appealed to his team’s fans not to start pressing the panic buttons now.

He was responding to the call by the team’s fans, who want a complete team overhaul, following their poor performance in their league matches.

Lidoda Duvha are still to win a league match this season.

They have played four matches, from which they managed to collect only three points to date. They played to draws with Roses United, Baroka FC and Witbank Spurs and lost 1-2 to African Warriors.

Thidiela said that the people should look at the general performance of the team and not to look at the results of the matches they had played so far.

According to him, the team’s performance in all the matches they had played was excellent, despite the fact that they did not manage to collect the maximum points in any of them. Their only weak point was that they were not scoring goals, despite playing entertaining football. He reiterated the fact that the technical team was working on that, saying that sharing the spoils with the opponents would soon be something of the past.

Thidiela further indicated that the fact that they had scored three goals and conceded four to date was a clear indication that the team was on the right track. He asked the team’s supporters to continue rallying behind the team, saying they would soon start to collect the league points home and away.

He reiterated that the team was still on course to win the league title, saying it was still too early to rule them out.

“Look, we still have 26 league matches to play before the activities of the current season come to an end and anything can still happen,” he said.

Jordaan replaces Nematandani as Safa boss The former Safa vice president and 2010 FIFA World Cup CEO, Dr Danny Jordaan, is the new president of Safa.

He won the race for the top seat over fellow contender, Mr Mandla “Shoes” Mazibuko. It was an overwhelming victory for Jordaan, who polled 162 votes to Mazibuko’s 88.

The association’s elective conference was held at their Johannesburg offices last Saturday.

Jordaan takes over from Mr Kirsten Nematandani, who did not contest the

race.

In an interview with the Limpopo Mirror on Monday, Jordaan mentioned that his mandate was to improve Bafana Bafana’s overall performance, youth development, strengthening women’s football as well as strengthening the association’s financial standing.

He revealed that the establishment of competent U/13, U/15, U/17 and U/19 leagues at the level of local football associations was top of his list of priorities.

He also stated one of his short-term goals

was to restore the association’s lost pride.

Although he refused to elaborate further on that, soccer fanatics believe that he was referring to the match-fixing scandals involving Bafana Bafana friendlies in the build-up to the 2010 World Cup and the conflict between the association and the Premier Soccer League, all of which emerged during Nematandani’s reign.

The vice-presidents’ positions went to Chiefs Mwelo Nonkonyana, who accumulated 197 votes, Lucas Nhlapo (173 votes) and Elvis Shishana, who got 167 votes. Dr Irvin Khoza is the fourth vice-president, by virtue of being the chairman of the Premier Soccer League.

The other members of the executive committee are Gladwin White, Kwenzakwakhe Ngwenya, Nomsa Mahlangu, Poobalan Govindasamy, Xolile Nkompela, Truman Prince, Ria Ledwaba, Aubrey Baartman, Norman Arendse and Anastasia Tsichlas. First success for KK Revolution in MMK league Tshakhuma KK Revolution started the new season by depositing the maximum points into their league account, following their 1-0 victory over Gwamasenga United Brothers in their MMK Funeral Services Soccer League match at the Tshakhuma Tshiemuemu School grounds on Sunday.

It was difficult for the players to control the ball, due to the slippery pitch.

Both sides were fighting it in the absence of most of their key players, whose registration cards were still to be printed by the league. The home side threatened to score in the ninth minute. Their tall striker, Kulani Madlalati, wasted a great chance to grab the lead when he tried to control the ball instead of picking a spot. This was after he had received a terrific cross from Londani Davhula.

Madlalalti was unlucky not to break the ice four minutes later. His shot from the inside the penalty box was easily saved by the Brothers’ keeper, Oupa Rambuwani, who palmed the ball away for a corner kick.

Local hardware store wants to develop youth soccer in region Worried about the neglect in the development of soccer in the country, especially in rural areas like Vhembe, staff from a local hardware store have taken it upon themselves to see that the sport is taken seriously and to another level.

Build It Thohoyandou last weekend hosted the Thohoyandou Build It Under 13 Soccer Tournament, where schools located not far from the shop participated. The store also roped in the services of soccer legend Pollen Ndlanya to conduct a coaching clinic before the games started on Saturday.

On Saturday, pupils from 12 local schools marched from the Thulamela municipality.

Singing songs and waving banners, they marched to the Univen Stadium, where the tournament was held.

The winning schools went home with trophies, full soccer kits and other prizes.

Build It’s Kim Spiers said it had always been their wish to be involved in sport development.

“Our business depends on local people for support and we felt that we should, in a way, plough back and give back to the community.

In developing the youth, we are in one way or another contributing to economic development.

The youth are our future; we should nurture their talents and develop them. Who knows, some of them could represent our country in the future,” she added.

She said they roped in Ndlanya as a role model, for him to give back the expertise he has in soccer to the young ones.

On behalf of Safa Vhembe, Mr Albert Tshisikule praised Build It and Pollen Ndlanya for the route they had taken in the development of soccer in the region.

Ndlanya said he was very impressed by the standard set by the schools during the tournament. “There is a lot of talent here and we have managed to identify good talent in this area. We hope with such initiatives by Build It, we will be able to touch most parts.”

In the final match, Tshilungoma Primary beat Mbahe Primary 1-0. The prize for the most supported team went to Jim Tshivhonelo Primary, who received a R5 000 voucher. Makhuvha Phuluso (12) of Tshilungoma was the Man of the Match in the final.

Another sad day for Tshiozwi Dynamos Weekend NFD results at a glance Last Saturday was a sad day for Tshiozwi Dynamos. They gave away three vital league points to Mpheni Home Defenders, following a 3-1 defeat

at the Safa Vhembe MMK Insurance Brokers League match played at the Mpheni grounds.

The third goal came in the 80th minute, when Rendani Ncube received the ball from the centre line and beat three defenders. He passed the ball to Lizzel Ramukhuvhathi, who sent it back to him to give it the final touch.

Last Saturday was a day to remember for the newly promoted Baroka FC. It was difficult for them to stop the strikers of United from scoring four goals against them in their National First Division League match at the Moruleng Stadium.

Baroka realized that it was not their day when their slender striker, Lawrence Moapi, missed a sitter in the seventh minute.

This after he had received a brilliant pass from Edgar Hlaole.

That was a wake-up call to the players of United.

They initiated some promising moves from the centre of the pitch and before long they opened their account through Henry Mlambo. Jeffrey Seoka scored the second in the 38th minute to bring the half-time

score to 2-0.

The wheel of fortune continued to turn against the Limpopo side in the last half. They conceded two more goals through Henry Mlambo and Steven Soko in the 67th and 75th minute respectively.

The unexpected happened at the Umhlathuze Sports Complex in Richards Bay when Thanda Royal Zulu rose to the occasion and registered their first victory for the season. They beat Vasco da Gama 1-0.

Milano United maintained their unbeaten record by collecting the maximum points at the expense of African Warriors, whom they beat 3-2 at the Wynberg Military Base Stadium.

Maluti FET College were unlucky not to score when they

played to a goalless draw with Santos at the Charles Mopedi Stadium.

The students were awarded a penalty towards the end of the first half. Rodney Simons shot wide from the white spot, much to the embarrassment of the team’s home fans.

Sivutsa Stars lost 0-1 to Blackburn Rovers, despite the fact that they were playing in front of their home crowd. Black Leopards shared the spoils with Witbank Spurs, following a goalless draw in Polokwane.

FC Cape Town and Roses United also played to a goalless draw, while Chippa United and Jomo Cosmos scored two goals apiece at the Philipi Stadium in Cape Town.

“Safa Vhembe delays us” - MMK teams The Safa Vhembe regional league, known as the MMK Insurance League, is in a mini-crisis as players’ registration cards were not finalised in time for the commencement of the league.

As a result of this, the league’s activities have been delayed.

Some teams have already played two matches, but most teams haven’t been on the pitch for a single game as they still don’t have registration cards.

Some teams have already lodged complaints with the league as the delays affect their preparations.

George Kubayi confirmed that they did not finish the processing of registration cards in time for a smooth start to the league.

He pointed out that the matter arose because the contractor with the tender to process the cards did not meet the deadline, for a number of reasons he did not disclose.

He assures teams and fans, however, that although the league was rocked by some delays, at least 80% of the matches will be played this weekend. He added that they were at an advanced stage to finalise and bring the registration cards up to date.

Six Baroka players injured in accident

The players of Baroka FC were lucky to survive an accident when their bus collided with a vehicle on Sunday evening. They were on their way home after their NFD match against United FC at the Maruleng Stadium near Rustenburg in the Northwest.

The accident took place on the Lebowakgomo-Polokwane road at about 22:00. At the time of going to press, the driver of the bus was still in hospital. Six players and two officials were injured but discharged from hospital after treatment.

In a statement issued by the chief executive officer of the Premier Soccer League, Mr Brand de Villiers, on Monday, he wishes the officials and players a speedy recovery. The statement further indicates that the league is working closely with the club to ensure that they assist where possible.

The accident meant a double blow to the National First Division rookies as they suffered a 0-4 drubbing at the hands of United FC that afternoon.

When asked how the accident would affect their preparations for their coming matches, the team’s head coach, Mr Sello Chokoe, said that they had registered 30 players this season. He further indicated that, apart from the fact that they had

registered 30 players, the injuries which the players had suffered were minor.

Baroka will host the pace setters, Milano United FC, in their league encounter at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium tomorrow. Milano United are still to drop a league point this season, having won all the league matches they have played to date.

Black Leopards played to another goalless draw when they met Witbank Spurs at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday.

The home team would have had only themselves to blame had they lost the match. They abused countless scoring opportunities in the first minutes of the match. Jabulani Ndebele unleashed prematurely, instead of moving a few steps towards the keeper, Brice Msiza.

The Spurs side was strong in the far back and striking force departments, while lacked cohesion in the middle of the park.

On the other hand, Leopards enjoyed more ball possession, but their promising moves were turned into nothing, due to the rock-solid defence of Spurs. In the second half, the local lads put more pressure onto Spurs.

Isaac Papa of Spurs could not make the grade as the oppo-

nents used him as their freeway.

The home side came close to scoring in the 76th minute. Meshack Maphangule shot wide with only keeper Msiza to beat. Leopards’ strikers wasted many opportunities to win the match.

The former Leopards defender, Humphre Khoza,

was reprimanded with a card for rough play. The draw was a fair result for the evenly contested match.
