September saw the release of the latest provincial crime statistics, and although the figures showed only a slight increase from previous years, they still offered little consolation to Soutpansberg residents. Limpopo Police Commissioner Lt Genl Fanie Masemola released the crime statistics for the period from April 2012 until March 2013 on Wednesday, 25 September, in Polokwane. During this period, the total number of cases reported at the Makhado SAPS increased from 2 481 to 2 520. In Musina, reported cases increased from 2 207 to 2 431 and in Levubu from 1 223 cases to 1 318. Violent crimes like murder did not show a remarkable increase. In Musina, the total number of murder cases decreased from 13 in 2012 to nine in 2013. Levubu had one fewer murder case than the previous year’s five. In the Makhado (Louis Trichardt) area, murder cases increased from five to 12 by the end of March 2013. Sexual crimes reported during this time, not only in the region but also across the province, were the highest ever. During the last year, Limpopo has seen an increase of 15.8% in sexual offences. At the Musina SAPS, the number of sexual crimes has increased from 72 to a shocking 168. At Levubu, the cases have increased from 63 to 71. The Makhado SAPS is one of the few stations were the total number of similar cases (145 to 63) has decreased. Other criminal activities that have increased at an alarming rate in the Makhado policing area were burglaries at family homes. For Makhado (Louis Trichardt) the number of cases has risen from 232 in the previous year to 307. This intrusive crime has also increased in the Musina policing area from 222 to 270. In Levubu, the same crime has shown a slight decrease from 167 to 157. During this period, burglaries at business prem-

Alert Steel and Build launched an express store in Industria Street in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) last Friday morning, to a massive reception by eager customers who filled the store to capacity upon the opening of the gates. The store is one of several megastores, express stores and container stores which have been strategically selected to meet the needs of customers throughout the country. The stores all form part of Alert Steel and Build’s goal to be a one-stop shop for both consumer and commercial buyers. Mr Markus du Plessis, groups systems and IT manager, said that the new store had a more comprehensive offering than was previously available at Alert Steel and Build stores. “We stock both day-to-day consumables and large-scale items,” he said to the crowd of customers. “The express stores spe-
cialise in steel, timber, plumbing, hardware, paint, security products, home décor and building material.” Du Plessis quoted Alert Steel and Build’s CEO, Peter Dodson, who explained the purpose behind the new stores: “The establishment of new stores forms part of Alert Steel and Build’s progressive rejuvenating plans, announced earlier this year, and is designed to give us access to a broader consumer market.” As part of its business development plans, Alert Steel and Build has also established a graduate program to address the shortage of scarce and critical skills in the wholesale and retail sectors. Dr Phaswana apologises for his outburst at school “As an adult professional, I should not have allowed my emotions to get out of hand.” The circuit manager of the Vhembe Education District, Dr Sampie Phaswana, apologised for his recent outburst at the Eric Louw High School in Musina and promised it will “never happen again”. Dr Phaswana made the news headlines a few weeks ago, following a visit to the Musina high school. He apparently lost his cool after witnessing some unacceptable behaviour during the matriculants’ “40 Days” celebrations. The Democratic Alliance later laid hate speech charges against Phaswana at the Musina Magistrate’s court. The school’s matriculants were subjected to an almost eight-minute-long tongue-lashing from Dr Phaswana, marked by foul language and racial remarks in both Afrikaans and English. The outburst was recorded by one of the matriculants. In the recording, Dr Phaswana can be heard saying: “But if there is a Grade 12 that doesn’t want to be here and he bends every rule of the school, God help me, you will be sorry! Because I am not going to have mercy on anybody who bends the rules ...” Dr Phaswana then warns the matriculants not to take him on, referring to someone who “messed up” with him: “There
is a councillor principal who messed up with me in one of my meetings ... he did not know who he was messing up with, right now, nobody will touch him! He is a no no. Nobody will touch him because, by the time I am done with him, he will not get a cent, nothing ... I am not finished with him ... he is crying now but I am not yet done ... So I got in a male Afrikaner lawyer who hates blacks ... If you are a white person, I will get in a black Afrikaner lawyer who hates whites, so that then all the scores of all the battles which were fought long ago, there we will fight it in court. By the time we are done you won’t have money ... you won’t have money ... and your future will be down the drain ... no matter how good you are today ... If we start fighting and you are not having any matric, what is going to happen? If the case is still on, we don’t give you anything ...” It was specifically these last remarks regarding black and white lawyers which infuriated the DA. “His choice of words during his address are not befitting for an address meant for our learners,” said Ms Desiree van der Walt, DA Limpopo Education spokesperson. “What happened at Eric Louw
High School is very much unfortunate and regrettable,” Dr Phaswana said in a statement last week. “I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to the honourable MEC for Education, Me Dikeledi Magadzi, the HOD, Senior Management and all my colleagues. I also would like to apologise to learners, teachers and parents of Eric Louw High School.” Dr Phaswana said that as a circuit manager it was expected of him to display the highest professional standards and ethics at all times. “As an adult professional, I should not have allowed my emotions to get out of hand, irrespective of the cause. I have erred. I am now asking for forgiveness from everyone affected,” he said. Speaking to the Zoutpansberger for the first time after weeks of mixed reactions from the social media and people with interest, Dr Phaswana did not want to say much. He quoted from the letter to the Galatians, which says: “My brothers, if someone is caught in any kind of wrongdoing, those of you who are spiritual should set him right, but you must do it in a gentle way. And keep an eye on yourselves, so that you will not be tempted, too” (Galatians 6:1).

Petty thieves now target parked vehicles Not only the police are at their wits’ end with petty criminals. Businesses in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) have now also opted to become crime fighters in an effort to curb the rise in break-ins. The latest actions follow after more cases were reported of thieves breaking into parked vehicles and stealing valuables such as cash, cell phones and laptops. Over the last few weeks, more and more residents have become victim to these criminals. Last week, Peter Straughan from Leshiba Wilderness was outraged when he returned to his bakkie after shopping to find
his petrol container missing. Straughan said the rope with which the container had been fastened onto the bakkie had been cut loose. “How are you supposed to do shopping? You can’t lock everything inside of your car, and even then these criminals will break your window to get at your valuables,” he said. This new onslaught has forced some businesses to appoint private vehicle guards to watch over their clients’ vehicles. Makhado police spokesperson W/O Takalani Madzhigili confirmed this week that the police had received several complaints about theft out of vehicles. “Our members are doing everything
in their power to reduce the occurrence of such cases in future,” said Madzhigili. “We need the assistance of the public to combat this crime,” he added. He advised residents not to leave valuables in their vehicles. “If you absolutely have to leave such things behind, make sure it is in the cubby hole or hidden under the seat,” he said. Madzhigili also advised residents to make sure that their vehicles are always properly locked and the windows closed. “Those who use remote-control locking devices are urged to check physically whether their doors have in fact locked,” he said.

(From page 1) At Makhado, the number of robberies at residential premises has dropped from 13 to five cases, while it increased from eight to 15 cases at business premises. The chairperson of the Soutpansberg Town Watch Association, Mr Dirk Meissenheimer, said that the figures were worrying. “Housebreakings and robberies have definitely been on the increase,” said Meissenheimer on Tuesday. “Even people in the private security sector have noticed with concern the increase in break-ins and robberies,” he added. A crime that received some attention during the 2012/13 year was stock theft; an ever-present thorn in the flesh of farmers and land owners. In Limpopo, the total number of cases reported decreased by 8.2%. At the Makhado SAPS the total number of stock theft cases also decreased from 40 last year to 26. The same cannot be said about Levubu (7 to 12) and Musina (16 to 17). The stats for rhino poaching, which have been declared a priority crime by Environmental Affairs Minister Ms Edna Molewa this year, were not revealed as part of the provincial crime statistics. Meissenheimer has once again urged residents to be more pro-active when it comes to crime. “If you can’t join the town watch, at least be vigilant,” was his advice. “If you see something or someone that is suspect, report it to the police.”

4. Don’t be tempted to cash in your fund before retirement It can be very tempting to dip into your retirement fund to help pay off debt now. If you are retrenched or resign from your job, move your retirement money to a preservation fund or another retirement product. If you cash out your retirement fund and spend the money, you will have to save twice as much to make up for it.
1. Set your retirement goal Before you start your journey, you can estimate how much money you will need to save for retirement to maintain your current standard of living. A pension equal to 60% to 75% of the salary you are earning in the year before you retire will be enough. For example, if your income before you retired is R10 000, a pension of R7 000 should be enough to maintain your lifestyle.
5. Know your options when you retire As you get closer to retirement, you need to start considering the details of the annuity that you will purchase. An annuity is a policy where you will invest your retirement fund to secure a regular pension.

The Soutpansberg Astronomy Club (SAC) will be at the Mall of the North in Polokwane on Saturday, 12 October, to celebrate International Observe the Moon Night (InOMN 2013). Young soldier buried at her home village A young soldier from the region, who died while serving her country, was laid to rest in her home town. The 21-year-old Hulisani Tshiambwa of Tshi-
rolwe Village, in the Nzhelele area, was buried during a semi-military funeral on Saturday, 21 September. According to the communication officer of the Makhado Air Force Base, Sergeant Thomas Mulaudzi, Hulisani was killed in a motor vehicle accident while on assignment near the Mozambique border. She was part of the South African Infantry Battalion’s (2 SAI BN) Alpha Company that was deployed on the border between South Africa and Mozambique. She, together with the company, was deployed to protect the border from the influx of illegal immigrants and smugglers. While driving in a Samil truck back to the company’s base, the driver of the truck lost control and the truck overturned. Hulisani was killed instantly. Hulisani was scheduled to return home on 26 October. She was born and bred in Tshirolwe. After completing her primary education at Shirolwe Primary School, Hulisani completed her higher education at Nngweni High School in 2010. Before Hulisani joined the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) she enrolled at the University of Pretoria to fulfil her dream of becoming a health practitioner and received various certificates. She then completed her basic soldier training and was assigned to 2 SAI battalion under the command of Lt Col Moralo. According to Moralo, Hulisanie contributed much of her time serving the country while bringing peace and stability to the Democratic Republic of Congo under the auspices of the United Nations (UN) Mission. “She served with loyalty and pride, both as a citizen and a volunteer,” said Moralo. During Hulisani’s funeral, a close friend and colleague, Private Bongiwe Zondo, described her as a fighter. “Huli would, whenever she wanted to do something, do it without hesitation. Hy en sy vrou, tannie Bokkie, was vir die afgelope 30 jaar woonagtig op Makhado (Louis Trichardt). Oom Ben sou in Oktober sy 60ste huweliksherdenking saam met tannie Bokkie gevier het. Hy word oorleef deur tannie Bokkie, sy ses kinders Kobus, Dawie, Annemarie, Lynette, Christo en Ria en agt kleinkinders en een agterkleinkind. Border officers accused of taking bribes Two Zimbabwean police officers and an immigration officer deployed at Beit Bridge border post appeared in court last week for allegedly taking a R500 bribe from five undocumented immigrants, who crossed into that country from South Africa illegally.
Makuvaza (30) and Meluleki Sibanda (30), who are both police officers, were arrested by the police’s crack team, soon after taking the bribe on 23 September. The three appeared before Magistrate Innocent Bepura last Thursday on charges of criminal abuse of duty as public officers. The case was postponed to 7 Robson Tapfuma (30), an October and the trio was granted immigration official, Rangarirai bail of US$200 each.

Anandie Oosthuizen het eerste verskyn en die aand geopen, te midde van bewonderende en waarderende toeskouers. Verskeie bedrywighede in die plaaslike gemeenskap waarby gemeentelede betrokkke kan raak, en behoeftes wat aandag verg, is tydens die naweek se verrigtinge bespreek. Die gemeentelede het onder meer kennis geneem
Vriende en familie het op Donderdag, 12 September, afskeid geneem van tannie Nancy de Bruin. Sy is na ‘n kort siekbed in die ouderdom van 92 oorlede. Haar familie bedank graag vir me. Kittie de Bruin en die personeel van Ons Tuiste Ouetehuis, wat vir die afgelope drie-en-‘n-half jaar vir tannie Nancy versorg het. Dit kan aan hierdie verwaarloosde vreemdelinge tydelike skuiling en helende versorging bied en hulle in aanraking bring met welsynsdienste (ook vir hul gesinne) tesame met opleidings- en werkverskaffingsmoontlikhede. Die tipiese nagskuiling open sy hekke saans op ‘n vasgestelde tyd en voorsien ‘n ete, wasgeriewe, ‘n bed en sluitkas vir die nag. Soggens na ontbyt vertrek almal na hul verskillende bestemmings en die hekke word gesluit. Dit is nie ‘n “blyplek” nie. Dit verskaf bloot ‘n veilige hawe vir die nag. Op 98 kan oom Chris de Jager R30 000 vir Bonsmara- en terugkyk na ‘n geseënde lewe Simmentalers by Tamboti het die Zoutpansberger met oom Chris gesels oor sy wedervaringe as ‘n jonger man. Oorspronklik van die Vrystaat, is oom Chris op 30 September 1915 gebore - een van agt broers en susters. Met sy tiende verjaarsdag is sy ma oorlede, en so het dit gekom dat die jonge Chris in ‘n weeshuis grootgeword het. “Daardie jare was die tye moeilik; die finansies het geknyp. Ons kinders kon net een maal ‘n jaar huis toe gaan om vir ons pa te kuier,” het oom Chris vertel. Nadat oom Chris gematrikuleer het, trek hy na die groot stad toe. Hy het saam met ‘n weeshuis-maat gebly in ‘n huis in Braamfontein. Dit was tydens die Depressiejare in Suid-Afrika, en werk was so skaars soos hoendertande. “Maar die Here voorsien altyd,” sê oom Chris. Sy eerste werk was by die apteek van ‘n Jood in Johannesburg, waar hy houtwerk gedoen het en winkelkaste ingebou het. Vir 15 sjielings (omtrent R1,50) het oom Chris vir maande lank elke dag ‘n uur lank gestap na die Jood se apteek om te gaan werk. Dié Jood, vertel oom Chris, was egter baie skepties oor die Boerseun wat vir hom gewerk het. “Hy het altyd vir my gevra: ‘Are you a German?’” Eendag, toe oom Chris al raadop met die Jood was, kry hy ‘n brief in die pos. “Destyds het mens twee eksamens afgelê; die Oom Chris de Jager, aan huis afgeneem Spoorweë s’n en die Staat s’n. tydens sy verjaarsdagvieringe Maandag. As jy die eksamens slaag, kon jy
werk by dié instansies kry,” verduidelik oom Chris. Oom Chris is goedgekeur vir diens by die Spoorweë. “Teen 10 pond per maand!” Spoorwegwerk het egter geen belangstelling by oom Chris gewek nie. So op ‘n dag het hy by die technikon oorkant die Spoorweë se kantoor ingeloop en besluit om onderwys deeltyds te begin studeer. Sy Hoër Onderwys Diploma het oom Chris later jare aan die Potchefstroomse Universiteit voltooi. Hy is in die destydse Transvaal as onderwyser geregistreer en aanvaar sy eerste pos as onderwyser op Piet Retief. Hier het hy ook sy eggenote, tannie Matilda, ontmoet. Hulle is al 66 jaar lank getroud. Die egpaar het in 1970 na Louis Trichardt verhuis, nadat oom Chris vir jare as skoolhoof gedien het by Vivo se laerskool (nou die CVO Skool Vivo). Na sy aftrede was oom Chris nog betrokke by die onderwys, maar sy passie was evangelisasiewerk. Hy het by die plaaslike tronk bedieningswerk onder die gevangenes gedoen. “Ek hou nou nog dienste vir my werkers hier op my plot, elke oggend voor hulle begin met die dag se werk,” vertel oom Chris. Dít is dan ook, sê oom Chris, die geheim vir sy lang en geseënde lewe: Die Bybel. “My seun, hoor wat ek vir jou sê, luister goed na my woorde! Moet dit nie vergeet nie, hou dit altyd in gedagte, want dit beteken lewe vir dié wat daarna luister, ‘n volle lewe vir hom wat dit besit,” is die Bybelvers uit Spreuke 4 wat oom Chris uit sy kop ken én sy lewe na rig.

Hy skud daai leeu naderhand so woes rond dat jy sommer hoor hoe die leeu se nek klap. Jannie jy sal dit nie glo nie, daar lê die leeu toe, heel vrek. Vandeesweek verskyn die eerste aflewering in die weeklikse rubriek oor die lewe van Daisy, ‘n semi-stadsmeisie wat êrens naby Pafuri haar muse gaan opsoek. Die verskoning aan haarself is dat sy gaan om ‘n boek te skryf oor die karakters wat haar pad kruis, hier waar drie lande se spore byeenkom en die grense maar skraps is.
Daisy gaan bos toe om ‘n boek te skryf
D
aisy sit dikbek en kyk na die hope bagasie rondom haar wat nét nie self ingepak wil kom nie. Daar is ‘n muskietnet, diksoolstewels, kombuisgoed, wit linne, kos. Dit is twee-uur in die oggend, die eerste dag van Die Groot Avontuur. Daar doer waar Zimbabwe, Mosambiek en Suid-Afrika oopketel maak vir die Pafurihek, daar op die walle van die Mutalerivier… Daar het ‘n muse haar klere uitgetrek en skalks oor die skouer na Daisy gewink. ‘n Boek wat roep om geskryf te word, ryk aan geskiedenis en kultuur, vol kleur en karakters van haar kindweeswêreld. ‘n Skoolreünie het haar teruggebring, het mense gebring wat sy op laerskool laas gesien het. En tussen die braaivleisvure en die volmaan oor die rivier het almal stories en staaltjies vertel, gelag oor die voortvarendheid van jeugdige droogmaak, effentjies keel skoongemaak en die klammigheid aan die oë subtiel weggevee oor mense wat hulle lewens opgedrink het. Sy het teruggegaan huistoe en vir ‘n paar weke mooi gaan dink oor die uitnodiging om te gaan bly in Makuyaland en ‘n boek te skryf. Daar is niks anders wat haar aandag verg nie, daar is niemand wat haar vreeslik sal mis nie en sy is kriewelrig, sy het nuwe uitdagings nodig. Dit was nie regtig ‘n moeilike besluit nie. Anderkant Tshipise loop die pad so reguit soos die N1 uit Louis Trichardt, terug na Pretoria. Maar dis lente en die bome is getooi soos vir ‘n koninklike troue – knoppiesdoring, spierwit valsdoring, berggranate, wilde sering ... As daar duisende mense langs die pad met wit vlaggies was om haar te verwelkom, sou Daisy nie verbaas wees nie. Sy is die heldin wat met ‘n tiara en ‘n mantel die wêreld gaan
regskrýf! Agterop die bakkie is silwer kershouers, regte wynglase, lapservette, rou-sy beddegoed, fleurige wit katoenkleertjies. Daar is musiek gelaai vir enige geleentheid, boeke vir die gees en vlees, groentesaad, ‘n resep vir mopaniewurm-bredie, ‘n rooi Masailap vir die tafel onder die enorme Mashatuboom. Om skielik ‘n eenvertrekhut met ‘n semi-vreemdeling te deel is toe nie so erg nie. Uit haar kluisenaarsomgewing het Daisy skielik 24 uur geselskap. Vir twee dae praat Daisy en die Bosbewoner sonder ophou; hulle maak kos uit die oorvloed vars groente, ruil stories uit, beplan wat nodig is om finansiële bystand by die Departement van Kuns en Kultuur te kry. Maar iewers in haar agterkop begin Daisy reeds ‘n lysie maak van wat sy die volgende keer moet saambring – Jik, Handy Andy, skropborsels ... In die badkamer sien sy reeds hoe pragtige spoelklippe om die stort en badrand die rou sement en vrot matte vervang, hoe pragtig die takke wat met die vloed teen die walle van die rivier lê verander in handdoekrelings en hangplek vir klere. Die Bosbewoner gaan wys vir Daisy die gemeenskappie. Dis ‘n kort stappie, met guitige kontraste: die Mykonos-blou van die grasdakhutte met ‘n televisieskottel by die voordeur, baksteenoonde, ‘n splinternuwe kamp met grondverskuiwingmasjiene om die verspoelde brug te herbou. Hulle kom by die hut van die oudste inwoner net om te hoor dat die 103-jarige gogo ‘dorp’ toe is. Daisy neem fotos met haar selfoonkamera – dit laat nie reg geskied aan die nederige skoonheid nie, maar is noodsaaklik vir insluiting in die voorlegging aan die Owerhede. Die

Ons Tuiste sien die nood raak Ons Tuiste se bejaardes het so diep onder die indruk gekom van bejaardes wat in ons dorp bly maar van die hand na die mond lewe, dat hulle besluit het om in te spring en hulle deeltjie ook by te dra. Omdat hulle hulself as bevoorreg beskou om in ‘n heerlike tehuis vir bejaardes te woon waar daar in al hulle alledaagse behoeftes voorsien word, het hulle besluit om die BergCare Projek vir Bejaardes te ondersteun. Die mense van Ons Tuiste het begin om verskeie produkte in te bring na die ouetehuis se kantoor toe, waar die personeel dit versamel het. Daar het selfs heelwat geld ingekom en dit is weer aangewend om twee-minuut
noedels en sjampoe aan te koop vir die minderbevoorregte bejaardes. “Dit was eenvoudig wonderlik om te sien met hoeveel blymoedigheid en vreugde Ons Tuiste se inwoners ietsie by die kantoor afgee elke keer wanneer hulle van hulle eie inkopies af terugkeer,” het een van die organiseerders opgemerk. Eldine Peli het die kos en persoonlike skoonmaakmiddels op Woensdag, 25 September, by Ons Tuiste in ontvangs gaan neem en heelwat van die bejaardes wat met soveel liefde gegee het, was ook teenwoordig. Vier groot kartondose is oorhandig. Die BergCare projek se organiseerders het almal bedank wat so oorvloedig bygedra het.

Die afgelope skoolvakansie het sewe fietsryers van Hoërskool Louis Trichardt aan die Nasionale Bergfietskampioenskappe vir hoërskole deelgeneem. Die kampioenskap is in Magaliesburg aangebied. Voor, van links na regs, is Zaske Woest, Ruwan Pieterse, Nic Grobler en Douglas Archer. Agter is Zian van den Heever, Shoni Nemavhidi en Ivan Laubser.
