ANC factions prepare for regional conference war

Moses Maluleke, mayor of Collins Chabane Municipality, may then move into the position as deputy chairperson, with Rudzani Ludere becoming secretary. Adv Makonde Mathivha, who was tipped to be the new chairperson at one stage, may now become deputy secretary.

Muhlophe, Musina’s former mayor, may be the treasurer.

Matibe was criticised by a faction of the ANC delegates who accused him of taking sides and submitting the list of the names of the mayoral candidates to the ANC provincial executive without the necessary consultation. The ANC’s national executive committee intervened and ordered that Samuel Munyai and Dowelani Nenguda be reinstated as mayors for the time being while an internal investigation by the NEC is finalised.

ANC provincial spokesperson Mr Donald Selamolela said that the party was now gearing up for the regional conference. He warned members not to use the conference to divide the ANC in the Vhembe region. Delegates were also warned not to allow any violence at regional and provincial conferences. This comes after some of the ANC conferences had degenerated into violence in the past in other regions.

Selamolela said the conference should focus on ideas and not violent conduct by fellow members.

“We have no doubt that the regional leadership, in consultation with the provincial leadership, have done everything in their powers to ensure that all is well, and all systems are ready for the regional conference to sit,” said Selamolela.

The battle between two factions within the ANC in the Vhembe District is heading for a climax this weekend when the long-awaited 18th elective regional conference takes place.

The two factions were at each other’s throats the past few weeks, with disruptions and even threats of court interdicts being the order of the day.

The battle is set to play out at Kalahari Waterfront, a luxury lodge near Thohoyandou on the banks of the Nandoni Dam. It starts on Friday (10th) and continues on Saturday.

From the bits of information that could be gathered, two factions are vying for power over the region’s four local municipalities and one district municipality. The one group supports Advocate Makonde Mathivha and Tshitereke Matibe, while the other group supports the current deputy chairperson of Vhembe in the region and executive mayor, Cllr Dowelani Nenguda.

Nenguda, who was re-elected as the executive mayor of Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) last week, may have the upper hand.

His appointment as chairperson of the region is apparently supported by many of the branches.

Should he get the nod, Advocate Anderson Mudunungu will probably be vice-chairperson, with Percy Mashimbye as secretary. The deputy secretary may be Matodzi Ralushai, while the position of treasurer may go to Josephine Mukwevho. Mukwevho is favoured above the former mayor of Musina Municipality, Mihloti Muhlophe who apparently crossed over to the Mathivha camp.

They are then robbed of their belongings,” Ramakhanya said. “Law enforcement, united with other enforcement agencies, are intensifying operations at the hotspots. Several policing precincts in the province have also started patrolling to help curb these crimes.”

She said that these criminals tended to move from one area to another, focusing on quiet roads.

“The police will continue to conduct law-enforcement operations on Limpopo routes to ensure that anyone found placing objects [in the road] is apprehended to face the full might of the law.”

Ramakhanya advised motorists not to stop, even if their vehicles’ wheels are spiked or punctured.

She has expressed her concern over this trend and said she believed that a crime syndicate was responsible for these robberies.

A fire caused havoc early on Wednesday morning at Ravele.

The blazing inferno left the well-known Real Supermarket in charred ruins.

What had sparked the blaze is still unknown. Hundreds of people watched in disbelief as firefighters battled to put the flames out. The damage is estimated to run into millions of rands.

The owner of the shop, Mr Soyed Patel, said he had received a call from his security company at 02:45, informing him that his shop was on fire. “I rushed to the shop as I stay in Louis Trichardt, only to find that my whole shop was in flames. I called the police

and firefighters, who responded very fast but could not save anything as the whole building was engulfed in flames. We stood there helplessly as all the stock went up in flames. I am devastated,” he said.

Patel said he was not suspecting any foul play as a person had been sleeping in the shop. “What we are suspecting is an electrical fault,” he said. Patel added that the fire was a big setback for him and he would have to start from scratch.

Limpopo police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo confirmed that they are investigating the incident. “We have assembled a team of experts who will dig deeper to determine the cause of the fire,” he said.

Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo admitted that many cases of burglary were currently occurring in the Mutale area and said that he would summon and deploy officers to patrol the area at night.

Mojapelo made an appeal to the communities in and around Mutale to assist the police with information, so that culprits could be brought to book.

Genl Mathebula officially takes over command at AFB Makhado

By Kaizer Nengovhela Members of the Makhado Air Force Base and guests finally saw Brig Gen Lancelot Mathebula officially appointed as the new General Officer Commanding of Air Force Base Makhado. Mathebula replaced Brig Gen Russel Barends as GOC in April this year, but was only officially handed the baton during the Change of Command parade held at the base on Friday, 3 December.

Mathebula joined Air Force Base Makhado in 2000, where he continued to progress in pursuing his dreams of becoming a fighter pilot. In 2009, this dream became a reality when he qualified as a flight leader,

flying the Hawk MK120 trainer aircraft.

Barends said that Air Force Base Makhado was renowned for its discipline and he was confident that the reigns were in competent hands. He encouraged members of the air force to continue doing the good work they do in their communities and maintain a good working relationship with traditional leaders as they operate in their areas. He said Mathebula had earned this promotion as he had worked very hard for it. “I am hopeful and confident that he will continue serving his country with diligence.”

In his acceptance speech, Mathebula said he was humbled by the level of support shown by officers at

his appointment. He said he was prepared to accept the challenge and take the bull by the horns. True leadership, he said, started at home. One had to be able to lead one’s family well in order to lead others, and the support of one’s family was obviously very important.

“If you cannot lead, you cannot command, and if you cannot command, you cannot lead,” he said.

Female Combat Pilot for the SAAF Maj Mandisa Mfeka, who also attended the parade, welcomed Mathebula’s appointment and urged him to continue protecting the country’s hard-earned democracy.

“Let us all stand up and work towards the development of our communities,” she said.

The Concerned Group was established after a group of beneficiaries alleged that, among other grievances, inconsistencies had occurred with the administration of the association’s finances. They demanded that a new committee be elected, since the current committee’s term of office had expired a long time ago, but their demands seemed to be falling on deaf ears.

On 25 August this year, members of the Concerned Group protested outside the gate of the farm Melkhoutkopjes, threatening to shut down all farming activities. The farm is being managed by the Mamphodo Mushasha Begwa CPA. This protest action came despite a court interdict that was obtained at the end of 2020 that prohibits the Concerned Group from interfering with activities on the CPA’s farms.

Mukwevho was allegedly pulled off the road near the Rissik Street/N1 crossing. Ramurembiwa approached him and snatched the keys of the bakkie he was driving (which is CPA property) from him. Ramurembiwa, along with other members of the Concerned Group,

called the police and waited for them to arrest Mukwevho for not adhering to the court order (to elect a new committee by 30 November). According to Ramurembiwa, the police arrived and spoke to Mukwevho, but he was not arrested.

“The way the current committee is running the affairs of the CPA is totally out of hand.

Despite the court order that allowed the CPA three months to prepare and elect a new committee, they still have not done so,” said Ramurembiwa.

He further claims that the committee is robbing 17 interns of their stipends. According to him, the students are supposed to be paid R2 800 but instead are only paid R1 200.

The students confirmed that they were being paid short, and often got paid late too. “We are not always paid on time. The committee always come up with excuses. They told us we would get paid R2 800, but we only get R1 200. We are not sure where the difference is going to,” said Theophilus Ramurembiwa, one of the interns and the son of one of the CPA beneficiaries.

Mukwevho did not wish to comment on any of the allegations against the CPA.

He has been composing, recording and releasing music since around 1999, when he used to sing in a band called African Dread. Vho-Nengovhela, a local businessman, bought him his first guitar and he started taking lessons until he excelled in lead, bass and rhythm guitars.

“Along the road I was asked to lead the reggae band Rainbow Dread. This was when I honed my leadership and vocal skills to the extent that our group performed at many social gatherings.”

Hot new album by Adziambei Band released their much-anticipated album, titled Tshitototo, Volume 17.

The album contains eight

The founder of the band, Elias “Maele” Sirwali explained that Tshitototo is the Shona word for a person doing things slowly, and in the song, he implies that he does not want to live with someone who is slow or a slow learner.

Adziambei Band was formed by Sirwali at Guyuni village in 1982 and was later joined by his older brother, Tshivhangwaho Raedani, and cousins Johannes Kwinda and Sarah Masindi. In 1983, they released their first album, Members of the legendary Tshivenda group, Adziambei Band.

Phalaphala FM celebrates with 1.13 million listeners Phalaphala FM held a celebration at their Thohoyandou studio on 27 November after reaching 1 137 000 listeners, according to the latest RAMS figures. For the occasion, a few listeners were selected and invited to spend a few hours at the studio and engage with the presenters. The station thanked all its listeners for their unfailing support.

According to Phalaphala FM’s programme manager, Ms Sharon Ravele, the station started broadcasting on 1 February 1965 and continued to source news and different educational and entertaining programmes. “The station is giving its listeners more of what they want and less of what they do not.”

Over the years, Ravele said, the station had managed to build an emotional bond with its listeners, as demonstrated by their continuous support of “Phalaphala FM to the Rescue”.

Defenders cursed their luck when Samkele Tembe’s volley hit the cross bar and bounced back into play. Munaca came back strongly late in the match, but they could not find their way through Defenders’ rock-solid defence.

“The trend of the fourth industrial revolution is to save water,” said Calvin Nembidzane, the managing director of BLC Academy at a certificate-awarding ceremony held at Mount Azimbo Lodge on Friday, 2 December.

Thirty young farmers from the Makhado municipal area were trained for five days in hydroponic agriculture. Hydroponics is a process whereby plants are grown in sand, gravel, or liquid, with added nutrients but without soil.

According to Nembidzane, this system is different from irrigation in that the water does not go to waste or evaporate, but circulates through the system until the plant is fully grown.

Since last year, the academy has trained about 15 groups in hydroponic farming. “Many young farmers are benefiting from this system because it is quick, easy to use, less costly, and highly productive,” said Nembidzane.

Limpopo Mirror spoke to some of the graduates who received certificates after their training.

Daniel Raphunga (30) from Kutama is already into horticulture and feels that this system will be beneficial to him, as he will be able to produce continually throughout the year. “As I gain more and more experience in using the system, I would like to be a reliable supplier of vegetables and tomatoes in my area,” he said.

Clementine Ramutshila from Ravele village is already into small-scale farming too and is confident that she will benefit from this system. “At the moment, I am farming from home but only on a small scale. I grow chilies and vegetables. I am sure this system of farming will allow me to produce throughout the whole year.”

On the last day of the training session, the National Youth Development Agency, Small Enterprise Development Agency, and SAKATA (a company that is mainly into the production and sale of horticultural products) shared some information on how to run a co-operative and to select the best seed.

Joyful weekend for SMSA FC Try Again give Matika a Sunday

Ravies were looking hopeless throughout the last stanza. SMSA increased the lead in the 54th minute when Aubrey Noko headed home after a free kick that was taken by Bafana Mongeni.

Aubrey Noko was on target again nine minutes afterwards. A defender of Ravies miskicked the ball in an attempt to clear and Noko, who was waiting close by, scored an easy goal.

Ravies reduced the margin in the 69th minute. Moses Muhadisa beat the keeper with a long-range ground cutter. The keeper of SMSA, Tshiphiri Netshiozwi, was reprimanded with a card for ignoring the referee’s whistle. He kicked the ball away long after the referee had blown the whistle for an offside. Shudufhadzo Ramashia scored SMSA’s final goal in the dying minutes of the game.

Last weekend was a joyful one for SMSA FC. Not only did they manage to collect six points in the two MMK Administrators League matches they played over the weekend, but they also scored seven goals.

SMSA beat Themba Sunrise Riders 2-1 at the Thohoyandou P-East Grounds on Saturday and crushed the rookies, Ravies FC, 5-2 at the Tshedza School Grounds in Thohoyandou the following day. Their game against Ravies was a one-sided affair, with SMSA dictating terms in all departments.

SMSA demonstrated a spirit of commitment from the onset. They took the lead in the ninth minute when Ndivhuwo Negukhuni blasted in a rocket from inside the box. The goal seemed to be an insult to the Ravies’ strikers. They fought back four minutes later. Realizing that their scoring chances were slim, SMSA effected two changes to their starting line-up in the 25th minute. They replaced Archie Mbonyane and Johannes Mashiane with Bafana Mongeni and Thama Maluleke respectively.

Madombidzha Try Again gave Matika FC a Sunday to remember when they hammered them 7-0 in a one-sided Safa Vhembe MMK Administrators league match played at the Madombidzha Grounds on Sunday.

Try Again showed a spirit of commitment from the onset, with their midfielders creating chances for their striking force. Karabo Malatjie started the avalanche of goals after receiving a well-cooked pass from Sedzani Ndadza and scored easily in the second minute. Try Again squandered a chance in the fourth minute when Munenyiwa Mutshinya shot aimlessly.

The home side was dictating terms in all departments and their midfielder, Dakalo Mulaudzi, was booked for wasting time in the 14th minute. Malatjie scored his team’s second and Sibusiso Ramalata scored the third goal of his team to make the half-time score 3-0.

In the 46th minute, Ramalata received a pass from the centre line. He pretended to dish out a pass to the advancing Tshianeo Funzani, but kept the ball and beat the defence, releasing a hard shot into the net.

They beat Makonde FC 3-0 in their quarter-final match at the Makhuvha Stadium on Saturday.

could have opened their account in the ninth minute, but their right winger, Ritshidze Mushoma, seemed to have forgotten his scoring boots at home. Mushoma received a neat pass from Ampfarisaho Khangale just outside the box but fumbled with the ball and lost possession. Makonde regrouped from behind towards the end of the first half. squandered an obvious chance in the 39th minute. He went loose from the left corner and unleashed a half volley from the edge of the box. The ball hit the upright and bounced outside the field of play for a goal kick.

The scoreboard was still blank when the teams adjourned for the half-time break.

United Brothers broke the deadlock in the 54th minute.

Olugaho Mudau beat the keeper with a long-range half volley.

Makonde lost their original fighting spirit after United’s goal. That gave Brothers’ midfielders enough space to dictate terms in the middle of the park.

United Brothers scored their second via Mukhethwa Muloiwa in the 74th minute. He hooked in the ball, following Olugaho Mudau’s square pass.

United Brothers put matters beyond doubt when Rofhiwa Madome beat the offside trap and scored with a ground cutter.

Makonde played the last 15 minutes with their hands tied behind their backs.

Their midfielder, Ndamulelo Nemutavhanani, was given his marching orders after an illegal tackle on Rolivhuwa Mphadi.

Vhadau Vha Damani must beat Richards Bay to stay in the race

After playing two league matches away from home in a row, Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM) will be back home this weekend.

They will rub shoulders with Richards Bay FC at the Thohoyandou Stadium on Sunday.

TTM must collect the maximum points in the match to enhance their chances for promotion. Vhadau Vha Damani, as they are also known, are lying in the 11th position on the log standings with 19 points, nine behind the pace setters, Richards Bay FC. Sunday’s match will be the third for TTM under the guidance of the team’s caretaker coach, Mr Lucky “King Mchichwa” Nelukau.

Nelukau took over from Mr Zeca Marques, who parted ways with the Tshakhuma side

about three weeks ago. TTM had won both matches that the team had played under Nelukau’s guidance.

Asked about their level of readiness for the game, Mr Nelukau was quick to mention that the spirits were high in the camp. He said that his mandate as a caretaker coach was to restore the team’s lost pride.

Venda Football Academy will play against Cape Town All Stars at the Cape Town Stadium in the only match that will be played this afternoon (Friday). Black Leopards will fight for league points with Uthongathi FC at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Sunday.

VFA will host Pretoria Callies at the Thohoyandou Stadium next Wednesday, 15 December.

Whether Pretoria Callies will use the match to exact sweet revenge for the 0-1 defeat they had suffered at the hands of VFA in their league match at the Thohoyandou Stadium last Saturday is something that remains to be seen.

The Callies’ midfielders, Philani Cele, Khomotso Marebane and former Black Leopards playmaker Meshack Maphangule, are expected keep the VFA’s defence running for cover for the better part of the game. On the other hand, Callies will have to double their efforts if they are serious about breaking VFA’s defence, which is marshalled by MacClive Phiri and Msekeli Mvalo.

Black Leopards will host Free State Stars at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane in one of the three matches that will be played on Tuesday.

Lidoda duvha are still battling to come to terms with the 0-2 defeat they suffered at the hands of Jomo Cosmos at the Vosloorus Stadium in Johannesburg last Saturday.

Venda Football Academy (VFA) continued to pave their way to the DStv Premiership League by collecting the maximum points against Pretoria Callies, whom they narrowly beat 1-0, in their GladAfrica Championship League match played at the Thohoyandou Stadium on Saturday.

VFA took 40 minutes to find the goal that earned them the three significant points. The team’s top goal scorer, Rotondwa “Neymar” Mutsivhuli, made no mistake after receiving a neat pass from Tau Rankoko.

Following the victory, VFA have reason to believe that they have a good chance of campaigning in the DStv Premiership League, come next season. The Thohoyandou side had jumped from the sixth to the third position on the log standings with the victory. VFA have deposited 25 points into their league account to date. They are only three points behind the pace setters, Richards Bay FC. Another Vhembe-based side, Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM), registered their second victory in a row the past weekend.

Vhadau Vha Damani proved their critics wrong when they rose to the occasion and beat Uthongathi FC 1-0 at the Princess Magogo Stadium in Durban.

TTM were awarded a penalty towards the end of the game after Tebogo Motloung was brought down within the box. Their bulldozer striker, Rhulani Manzini, blasted in a rocket from the penalty spot. TTM have enhanced their promotion chances with the victory. TTM are now lying in the 11th spot on the log standings with 19 points.
