“Going behind the scenes with Mac-Fam”

* By Ngerezah The music industry in our region is growing faster than rocket speed, and the talented artists are soon to capture global attention. Makoya lens witnessed an awesome “in the making” moment and we couldn’t wait to give snippets of this beautiful music video shoot, of one the dopest Hip-hop group “Mac-Fam”. The atmosphere was electric and everything went well as the director, crew and extras got ready to create the best music video that will change the course of history as far as Venda music is concerned. I had the chance to meet the crew a day before when they were choosing their wardrobe, makeup and all props and I never thought that it was going to be this HUGE! They were shooting their debut music video for their world class hit “Red Alarm” which, IMHO, is going to be the best video ever shot in the land. The

video theme, as the song suggests, is red and black. “We want to create something that will compete not only locally but also globally as we make up part of the global society,”said Tshilidzi Ramulondi the Director of Mad House Music and TV. MacFam is the ambassador of our people thru spoken Hip-hop word, and that reflects our culture and who we want to be. It is a story that can never be compromised and we used every resource at our disposal to make sure we don’t compromise the quality at the end,” he added. Let me give you the chorus of the song: “We busy big bowling stacking money to ceiling, and these haters still broke cause they are sleeping, turn it up, turn up until the speakers blow. This is music, this is a song, this is music from soul, you can see its time to glow for my people back at home, it’s a red alarm!

“Let’s check what the director has to say...” Holla hops! After 10 good years of toiling and endless learning in and beyond South Africa, I ultimately realized that my people, my culture, my language and my soul were not getting their fair share of attention. I mean, there still isn’t much on Television, especially music videos, and we all know the people of the north are naturally musical. Hence, I decided to start working towards coming back home so that I could be close to a bunch of up and coming musicians to whom I would impart TV Production skills and also help them to make

good quality music videos. The Red Alarm shoot was an amazing experience, mainly because of the caliber of people I was working with: - young, vibrant, full of fresh ideas and welldriven. As TV-AfreeCa we are looking forward to making more videos set in Limpopo, with Lyrics in Vernac, by our artists and for the world. Just watch this space! • Awelani Mulaudzi 2012 is a big year for me! I’ve been back at Wits medical school, for four weeks now and the excitement is still running high! Currently in my third year, and that means that in a month’s time, hospital work starts. I can’t wait to be working with people from different worlds and I’m so glad that I am going to start learning how to make a difference in their lives and make the world a better place. The work is already piling up and we are nearing exams, while everybody else is still settling back into varsity or even still on holiday! That is the life of a medic! I’m not complaining, this is the life I signed up for, and in a few years it will be fulfilling when someone leaves your consultation room and you know you’ve probably changed their life.I don’t want to just give medical help, but I want to be the kind of doctor that’ll help people socially, as well as spiritually. Apart from school, I recently started a Christian ministry called” - Love shine through ministries, that aims to raise funds to support evangelical missions, that is, to purchase bibles, print gospel tracts, and help some of my missionary friends with their labour to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ as Lord, and as saviour to South Africa..Currently the ministry sells Christian clothing to raise the funds. Every year I personally make it a mission to know more about God and grow in faith and love,

and this year is no different! The year holds many things for me and I’m taking everyday with both hands, by the grace of God! • Bronwn Face In the year 2012 I have two ventures: that is the business and music industry. We are starting a co-operative business with some graduates from the University of Venda, and I’m also working with professional music producers - and I’ve accomplished doing research about a certain society.

• Azra Asvat - Ridgeway College ex- student. “never down play what God has put out for you. you might plan well but God plans better. Believe, keep faith and only then will you be victorious in the end.” • Albert Oloo - Sound Engineer/ Producer 2012, another year, another chance to make things happen. New work, new music on its way, look out for Stereolab this year. Bigups to Makoya multimedia on its progress and may things go well for all of you this year. Positivity is the way forward.

2012? It has been quite a journey for Makoya, and it’s now five years of being in the industry as a brand. We’ve had our highs and lows, of which our most memorable prime moments were the reading and writing project, and being able to interact so closely with the community, as well as being able to impact on the listenership of the radio stations that we’ve worked with. Our lows…well, that must be our learning curve that has brought us thus far, having persevered of course. This year, Makoya wants to make a difference in every area of your life through sharing and exchanging that which is socio-economically beneficial. The year

2012 is a year of introspection into your affairs (business, love-life, work, home, friends etc), wherein you take time off to assess with a view to improve. Improvement means kicking off certain habits and replacing them immediately with fresh-new ones. As we journey into the year we should surround ourselves with love and learn to forgive, for our physical health’s sake, in the midst of the first world countries’ sneezing. We in the SADC are catching funny economical flu’s, therefore hold on dearly to that which puts bread on your table, even if it is not fancy. ED

• Darryl Landsberg - Entrepreneur My focus this year is to establish projects that improve the standard of education. My job is about giving direction and leadership,it’s all about keeping up to date with change in the curriculum so that teachers are able to teach effectively and plan proactively, this translating into improved learning and teaching. • Wanani Rantloane Executive Producer Generations. The year 2012 is very significant for me as I am expecting my second child. My entire family is very excited about. In terms of my career, I plan on branching out and doing more stuff on my own. This is the year where I actively write more scripts and involve myself in other projects. This is the year I turn thirty as well, which means my twenties are officially over. I’m not too sad to see them go though, it was great decade, but it is time to grow up and focus more on my career and family. BOOK: 100 PAPERS BY LIESL JOBSON 100 Papers is a “collection of prose poems and flash fiction” written while the author was preparing her degree-purpose paper with the University of Witwatersrand. The work was eventually approved and Jobson rightfully awarded a Masters of Arts in Writing because she has revolutionised the one-page or half-page story and called it “flash fiction”. Even though she’s not the first writer to have penned the short pieces of this nature, today Jobson is considered the godmother of “flash fiction” in South Africa. Reading her flash fiction pieces is an experience that you as the reader wouldn’t wish to miss. She writes about matters of love, scents or fragrances in the atmosphere, music, and the sacred issues of humanness (the area that many authors dare to tread for fear of being accused for immorality). This book contains 100 flash fiction pieces, hence the title of the collection. How funny it is! The English in this publication is straightforward and accessible; you hardly need the aid of a dictionary for the vocabulary or terms used. Nevertheless, the quality of the author’s voice and her artistry (how she uses words as an artist) remain steady throughout the 177 pages. 100 Papers was published by Botsotso Publishing, and has earned Jobson the Ernst van Heerden Creative Writing Award (2006) from the University of Witwatersrand. BOOK: NEVER BY BERNAT KRUGER Never is Kruger’s debut collection of poems that he wrote from the farming town of Delmas in Mpumalanga, as the publisher’s information tells us. The poet has a strong command of the English language in that he allocates the correct verbs to appropriate circumstances to describe better the events or the unseen. His vocabulary is wide ranging, rich and alive on the page. He writes about the rivers, places he has visited or those he is familiar with, and the people he knows and has known over the time. In the poem “20cm” he writes: “I’m hunched with a mug of pungent filter coffee in hand, at a workbench plying wear and tear”. Perhaps by “wear and tear” the poet suggests that the bench on which he is sitting is very old in its immediate condition.

Music Reveiws Continues from page 4

WIN A BOOK ! The expression “I’m hunched […]” only gives readers the impression that the speaker might be feeling uncomfortable in his or her sitting posture, after a hard work. But here we’re told somewhere in the poem that it’s early in the morning. By that alone, the speaker could have been working through the night. Now he introduces the strong imagery of a bird coming to his view. He calls this bird “this living thing”, paradoxically viewing human life as creation of no more important than birds. Although Kruger’s poetry might seem quite difficult to understand for the unseasoned readers of poetry at a go, there’s some measure of consolation found in the pictures (imageries) his words evoke. Never is published by Deep South Publishing.

Artist: Jinika Album: Ndi Muvenda Publisher: Masana records Ratings: 6/10 This latest offering from the singer whose 2005 song “Ni Tshi Tamba Ni Tambe Zwavhudi” earned a large following, makes for refreshing listening. Listening to the songs and savouring the quality of Jininka’s voice fused with soft rhythms, is a true affirmation that she deserved the South African Traditional Music Award for Best Venda Album in 2011! In the songs Zwavhuhadzi, Zwi Pfisa Vhutungu and Matodzi, she sings about the troubles and tragedies that befall the women in the 21st century, and she encourages them to stay strong. In Funani Vhafumakadzi Vhanu, she advises men to love and care for their wives. As for a bonus, the artist invites the people to come over and rejoice with her in the song Idani Ridi Phine. She sings: “Vhutshilo a si vhulapfu/ Idani ri diphine ngaho (Life is too short/ Come enjoy with me”). Here she implies that people must stop grumbling and start appreciating what they have in order to enjoy a gift of life and living. A good album indeed!

Music Reveiws Artist: Comrade Li Album: Africa Unite Publisher: Masana Records Ratings: 8/10 Born Livhuwani Sengani some donkey years ago and known as Comrade Li by his stage name. He was once nominated as the best Hip-hop/Mc on Y-fm hip and that proved to music lovers that this young energetic and good looking creature was made up of pure talent. His album “Africa Unite” is the fusion of pure afro inspired hip-hop that lives in the times of today. I like tracks such as “Ndizwa hashu and Imani nidi itele feat Jinika” which to me are the works of Excellency and beyond. I am still struggling to work at home since Bono keeps singing the song “Fiorah feat T-Man Gavin” which has become the street anthem across all music fanatics. To make a long story short, all I can say is that from sleeve designs to mastering it is just “WOW”…..
