Emotional send-off for Mia Muofhe
By Elmon Tshikhudo and Maanda Bele.
The late Lindelani Nengovhela was finally laid to rest during a very emotional funeral service, which took place at the local Murangoni cemetery on Saturday. This followed a memorial service that was held for her at Vondo la Thavha the previous day.
Mia Muofhe (32), as she was affectionately known in social circles, was the wife of comedian Livhuwani Madadzhe, who also goes by the name of SABC Livhu. She was found dead in a water-filled ditch at the family’s home at Mangondi Sidou on Saturday, 28 January.
Madadzhe (38) was arrested the same day and stands accused of her murder. He has already appeared in
court and his case was postponed to 23 February. He remains in custody.
Hundreds of people from around the province, among them politicians, organisations opposing gender-based violence, traditional leaders, pastors, and artists, braved the rainy weather to give her a befitting send-off.

Principal gets chased with axe by unruly learner
By Thembi Siaga
Teachers and learners at Muthuhadini Combined School are still in a state of turbulence after a Grade 10 learner chased the principal around the school premises with an axe on Thursday, 2 February.
According to Mr David Ndou, the chairperson of the school-governing body (SGB), one of the school’s teachers reported the learner in question’s disruptive behaviour during classes to the head of department (HOD). When the learner was rebuked by the HOD and the teacher, he swore at them. The principal then came to investigate the situation.
“He (the boy) was swearing at both the principal, teacher and school HOD, so the principal gave him a pass to go home. It was not long before the learner returned and forcefully entered the school premises with an axe hidden inside his trousers. He went straight to the principal’s office, but couldn’t find him. The learner searched for the principal, found him, and started
chasing him with the axe.”
Ndou said that the principal had managed to escape to the school hall unharmed, and had been rescued by the learner’s brother and some of the other teachers. The learner was escorted from the school premises.
On Friday, 3 February, the principal laid a complaint of intimidation and assault at the Waterval Police Station. A case was opened and the learner was expelled from the school.
This is not the first violent incident at the school. Last year, one of the school’s learners allegedly stabbed a pupil from another school to death.
In an effort to resolve this issue, parents, teachers and members of the SGB met on Monday, 6 February. During this problem-solving meeting, both the teachers and parents put their concerns on the table. One of the parents accused the principal of creating problems by expelling learners who are disruptive without adhering to the school’s code of conduct.

Vhakoma Vho-Siphuma laid to rest
By Elmon Tshikhudo
Vhakoma Vho-Midana
Samaria Siphuma (74) of Malavuwe village passed away at the Tshilidzini Hospital on 28 January after a short illness. She was laid to rest at the local Malavuwe Cemetery on Sunday, 5 February. Her funeral was preceded by a memorial service and night vigil that was held at her home the previous day (Saturday).
Siphuma was the mother of the present leader of the New African Apostolic Church, Bishop Tendani Nangammbi Tshifularo Gogome. She was known to love everyone around her and is described as a highly religious “prayer warrior” as she often went into the mountains to pray for the good of the village and the church.
She was given the title of Vhakoma as she was the first of the late Archbishop Tshisaphungo Samson Gogome Tshifularo’s four wives. Her husband was the founder of the New African Apostolic Church.
The funeral was attended by many family members, relatives, and church members from Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Musina and around Limpopo. Among the traditional leaders who came to show their last respects were Vhamusanda Vho-Vangulani Phillip Ramufhufhi of Mudzidzidzi, Vhafuwi Vho-Dr Johannes Gogome Tshifularo and the local Vhamusanda Vho-Mafenya Mphaphuli. Tshifhe Vho-David Thidiela, Archbishop Bless Netshirioni, Bishop Ntshavheni Netshia and Bishop Phyllimon
Miriri were among the notable church leaders there.
Limpopo’s rescue team leave on humanitarian mission to Turkey
By Elmon Tshikhudo
The death toll continues to surge, following two devastating earthquakes in southern Turkey and northern Syria on Monday (6 February). With more than 9 000 people already known to have been killed, thousands of rescue teams from across the world have already flown in to help search for survivors; many of whom are still trapped under the debris, while difficult weather conditions make this task all the harder.
The late Siphuma’s daughter, Bishop Tendani Nangammbi Tshifularo Gogome, remembered her mother as a loving and caring woman who healed the sick and prayed for many to get jobs. “She used to sell vegetables and clothes to support her family. She raised 26 of her late husband’s children without discrimination when things were not right. We will always remember her good deeds and her love, and she will be dearly missed,” she said.
Bishop Rebecca Nehelula of the Musina United African Apostolic Church described the late Vhakoma as a role model. “She was full of love, and we should draw inspiration from her memory when we pray,” she said.
Siphuma is survived by her eight children, 18 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Former deputy director at SACM prison sentenced for corruption
Crime Reporter
The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) said they were content with the sentences that were handed down against a former deputy director at the Kutama Sinthumule Correctional Facility (SACM) outside Louis Trichardt, Musiiwa Clement Raphalalani (57), by the Sibasa Regional Court on 31 January.
During 2017, Raphalalani, who was a procurement officer at the facility, connived with his apparent lover, Delicia Sadiki, to award tenders to Vhalenda Zwashu Trading Enterprise without following due process. Raphalalani and his co-accused were arrested during a sting operation by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation members in December 2018. The Hawks’ investigation revealed that Sadiki is a director of Vhalenda Zwashu Trading Enterprise. The company benefitted R10.8 million from these corrupt activities.
On 20 October 2022, the court found Raphalalani guilty on nine counts of fraud and corruption and the case was postponed to 31 January 2023 for sentencing. During sentencing last week, Raphalalani was sentenced to a fine of R12 000 or three years’ imprisonment on count one; a R15 000 fine or 15 months’ imprisonment on count two; a fine of R20 000 or six years’ imprisonment on count three, a fine of R15 000 or five years’ imprisonment on count four; a fine of R14 000.00 or four years’ imprisonment
on count five; a fine of R8 000 or two years’ imprisonment on count six; a fine of R25 000 or seven years’ imprisonment on count 7; a fine of R10 000 or 36 months’ imprisonment on count 8; and a fine of R8 000 or 18 months’ imprisonment on count nine. In total, Raphalalani was fined R120 000 or 32 years’ imprisonment.
The provincial head of the Hawks in Limpopo, Major General Gopz Govender, applauded the investigation team for their sterling work that led to the conviction and sentencing of the accused on numerous counts of fraud and corruption. “I would like to extend my gratitude to the prosecution team and the judiciary for ensuring that justice prevails,” he added.

The MEC for Health, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, addressed the mourners at the funeral. She emphasised that the government’s presence was to give support to Lindelani’s family, especially her parents and three children. “They are currently going through pain that no amount of prescribed analgesics can ease; only time and our prayers can heal them,” she said.
“What makes this situation worse and more painful is that it is an open secret that the couple had previous episodes of abuse and that Lindelani tried to raise them, but later withdrew those cases,” she said. Ramathuba urged everyone, however, not to judge Lindelani.
“Abusers in their nature manipulate their victims into believing that it won’t happen again. They isolate their victims from society and make them believe everyone is jealous of them. While we appeal to everyone to give the police and law-enforce-
MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba was there to bid them farewell and see them off. She thanked the volunteers for having responded at such short notice. “We know it is short notice, but we also know you are always available. In our department, there is no time to plan. Things happen and we execute, and we know you will not disappoint. We are very proud of you. To the community out there, we urge you to pray for them as this
is a very dangerous mission,” she said.
Vhembe’s Nekhumbe said they were ready for the big mission. “This is a mission of another kind. We have served at other places, like the KwaZulu-Natal floods, but this is different. We are all determined, and we hope our efforts will help save many lives,” he said.
The crew is due back in Limpopo next week.
Not to be left out, the Limpopo Province dispatched its own rescue team of five dedicated EMS Search and Rescue members to assist. These brave men are Jankie Fokane, the team leader from the Waterberg District, Robert Masubelele from the Capricorn District, Vercky Shipalana from the Mopani District, Louis Markram from the Mopane District, and Nicholas Nekhumbe from our own Vhembe District.
The team flew from OR Tambo Airport on Tuesday, 7 February, to join Gift of the Givers and other teams and organisations from across the globe. Limpopo Health
Principal chased with axe by pupil

The schoolteachers said that some parents threatened them when they were called to the school to assist in dealing with matters involving their children.
The majority of parents suggested that six other troublesome Grade 10 and 11 learners, whose names were mentioned during the meeting, should also be expelled. A further suggestion was made that the school increase its security.
Ndou said that most of the troublesome learners at the school were under the influence of drugs, like dagga.
The police spokesperson, W/O Foster Rambau, confirmed both cases (the one where the learner chased the principal as well as the one where the learner stabbed a pupil from another school to death). “As both suspects are minors, their cases are being assessed by the probation officer, who is a social worker,” he said.
ment agencies space to deal with this case, we are also aware of the fact that the suspect, who has since been arrested, is her spouse, which makes it another life lost due to GBVF,” she said.
The MEC also indicated that what needed to be done was not to judge victims of GBVF, but to empower them psychologically, because if their mental state was strong, they would be able to overcome manipulation and walk away while they still could.
“Vhembe has become the capital city of GBVF in our country, and we call upon every citizen of this district to heed the call by our president and start dealing with this pandemic,” Ramathuba concluded.
During the reading of the cards that accompanied the mourners’ flowers, Lindelani’s children’s card was read aloud as well. It contained the following message:
“We saw a lot of painful things at a young age. We don’t know the

joy of having a mother. All we know is seeing our mother’s tears. Today our mother left in poverty. Our father took her from us, he turned our home into a boxing ring. While to the public he was a wolf in a
sheep skin, he acted like a saint. We don’t care if we don’t see him again. What is more painful is that we will be living without our mother. May your soul rest in peace, Mom. From your children.”

Man still on the run after allegedly killing granny and abducting boy
what was happening, Baskiti was inside Mabasa’s bedroom, allegedly strangling her and threatening to kill her if she did not tell him where Idah was. (Idah was sleeping in a separate room.)
Baskiti then allegedly started to stab her with a sharp object. Idah tried to intervene and pleaded with him to stop. She ran outside to call for help, but Baskiti followed her and pinned her to the ground, where he allegedly also stabbed her several times over her body.
By Kaizer Nengovhela
A 78-year-old granny of Mashau-Bodwe died and one of her daughters was seriously injured when the boyfriend of the woman’s daughter allegedly attacked them at their home late on the evening of 20 January.
Granny Marandela Mabasa, her daughter Idah (32) and Idah’s three-year-old son were sleeping on the night of the incident. Idah’s boyfriend, Nomthandazo Joseph Baskiti (who is also the father of her child) suddenly showed up and knocked on the door of their house.
According to the police report, Mabasa opened the door and went back to her bedroom. Before they knew
Baskiti then allegedly set the six-room house on fire before fleeing the scene, taking his little boy with him.
Neighbours saw the fire and came running and called the police, while some doused the burning house. Mabasa and Idah were rushed to the Polokwane Provincial Hospital. Late on Saturday, 28 January, Mabasa succumbed to her injuries. Idah was discharged from the hospital two days later (30 January).
According to Mabasa’s son, Aluwani, Idah had been in an abusive relationship with Baskiti. Just the day before the incident, Baskiti was released on R500 bail after Idah had laid a charge of assault against him. Aluwani said the families had held several meetings over the years to intervene and he himself had
gone to the local police station on several occasions to get a restraining order against Baskiti.
He said that Baskiti had taken Idah’s car and her bank card on the night of the incident. He allegedly later withdrew R10 000 out of her account and dumped the vehicle next to the N1.
Limpopo police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo said the Levubu police had opened a docket of murder, attempted murder, arson and kidnapping and robbery. The investigation continues. He urged community members with information on Baskiti’s whereabouts to help them locate him.
Granny Mabasa was buried at Mashau Bodwe on Saturday, 4 February.
No, SABC Livhu is not being abused in prison
By Maanda Bele and Elmon Tshikhudo
Rumours that the recently arrested comedian Livhuwani Madadzhe is being sexually abused in prison are false.
SABC Livhu, as Madadzhe is famously known, was arrested and charged with the murder of his wife, Lindelani Nengovhela (or Mia Muofhe), not long after she was found dead in a water-filled ditch at the family’s home at Mangondi Sidou on Saturday, 28 January.
Shortly after his arrest, a video sent by a fellow-inmate at the Matatshe prison in Vondwe started circulating on social media. The inmate describes himself as a “general of Suka Emabozeni”. In the video, he says (translated from Tshivenda): “Instructions are instructions. Livhu must get here fast. He must explain to me what he was saying in the letters that he wrote. I am here in Vondwe. The truth is that, in my capacity as a general of Suka Emabozeni, I will examine him.”
The circulation of the video added to speculation trending on Facebook that Madadzhe might face a hard time in prison, with some of his followers starting to assume that he might be physically and sexually abused.
Ms Tshidi Mapole, the regional coordinator of communications at the Department of Correctional Services - Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West, said that the allegations that Madadzhe might be abused were not true. “No report of such incident was received from the inmate (Madadzhe) during unlock this morning (Wednesday, 8 February). He is okay and in good health.”
Mapole said that, because Madadzhe was a high-profile inmate and placed in the high-risk category, he had been put
in a single cell. “High-profile offenders are not given preferential treatment by being placed in single cells. They are categorised as high-risk because of their high-profile status, making them vulnerable to attacks by other inmates. It’s our duty as the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) to incarcerate every inmate under safe and humane conditions.”
Mapole also added that the inmate on the video’s phone was taken from him. “An investigation was instituted, following the circulation of the video. The inmate was found to be illegally in possession of the cellphone, leading to him being internally charged with misconduct and losing some of his privileges,” she added.
Khakhati lambasts Thulamela for “chasing our soccer teams away”
By Kaizer Nengovhela
Well-known artist Khakhathi
“Muthuwanthu”
Tshisikule, who is also a councillor at the Thulamela Municipality, has criticised the municipality for scaring away the province’s top soccer teams with the excessive rent charged for using the Thohoyandou Stadium.
In the latest development, Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM), a team playing in the Motsepe Championship Foundation league, announced that they would be moving to the Dr Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein. The high rent charged for using the local stadium was stated as one of the main reasons for their leaving Thohoyandou.
Thulamela Municipality’s practice of charging excessive rent for whoever wants to use the Thohoyandou Stadium has been severely criticised over the past years. In 2021, Black Leopards announced that they would relocate because they could not afford to rent the stadium. At the time, the rent was R27 795 per match, after the 36% discount.
Black Leopards subsequently moved their home venue to the Old Peter Mokaba stadium, where they only paid R5 000 per match. Last year, Leopards moved their matches to the Malamulele Stadium after signing an agreement with the Collins Chabane Municipality. This municipality made the stadium available free of charge to Leopards.
Cllr Tshisikule was very
outspoken about Thulamela Municipality’s attitude towards sports clubs, especially the top teams. He said that the clubs were expected to pay around R57 000 to play a home game at the Thohoyandou Stadium.
Tshisikule, who represents the International Revelation Congress (IRC) in the council, said that he had written many letters to the municipality in trying to establish why such high rent was being charged, but he had received no response.
“I am sick and tired of this municipality, to a point that I started realising that the owner of Black Leopards, David Thidiela, was not just crying foul. He had a point.” He added that the situation affects more than just the soccer teams and the supporters. Even the hawkers who sell their goods during the big matches are now left stranded, because of what he describes a “selfish municipality”. Tshisikule said that he was going to mobilise the community to march to the municipality and hand over a memorandum to demanded that the tariffs be reduced.
One of the
hawkers who sells at the stadium, Ms Maria Mudau, said that she had been trading at the stadium for as long as she could remember. “I have not known any other job, and they now want to put me out of business,” she said. “They are working and have a steady income, while we depend on selling for a living. We voted for them, and this is how they repay us,” she said.
The Thulamela Municipality’s sports manager, Mr Ronald Makhadi, said that the stadium tariffs were fixed. He said that representatives of the three local teams had met with the mayor to discuss the issue, but he did not know what the outcome of the meeting had been. Makhadi said that the council would revisit the issue of tariffs in the middle of the year.

Vele Mine guest house destroyed
By Bernard Chiguvare
Nothing but a scorched, empty shell was left of the Vele Coal Mine’s guest house, situated 48 kilometres west of Musina, after it was gutted by fire on Saturday night (4 February).
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, but many questions and suspicions around the timing of the incident were raised, since it just happened to occur amid great discontent among community members, who said that the management of Vele Mine had not kept their promise to give locals jobs and then cancelled a scheduled public-participation meeting with them an hour before the
meeting was to start. (This meeting was held in the meantime on Monday, 6 February).
According to reports received, the fire, which started at around midnight, consumed everything inside, down to the last piece of furniture.
The Musina police have opened an arson docket for further investigation, but Musina community WhatsApp groups were humming as residents voiced their concerns. Some of the messages read: “If it is torched this is uncalled”; “It’s painful that we can’t find a way to resolve issues without destroying our property. Cry my beloved country”; and “Are there no security guards?”
Meanwhile, the South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) branch in Musina has clearly indicated that they have no regard for this kind of destructive behaviour. “As Musina SANCO branch, we distance ourselves from acts of vandalism and damage to property,” said Mr Reckson Matamela, chairperson of SANCO in Musina.
The Limpopo Mirror sent a media inquiry to the management of Vele Coal Mine to determine whether any visitors or occupants had been at the guest house when the fire started, and if so, whether everyone was evacuated safely, but at the time of our going to press, they had not responded yet.

On Friday (3rd), roughly 40 unhappy residents from Musina blocked the entrance to their local municipal offices after a public-participation meeting with the Vele Coal Mine, which had been scheduled for the previous day (Thursday) to discuss the lack of job appointments, was cancelled an hour before the meeting was to start and postponed to 6 February.
The notice of cancellation came via the municipality, who informed residents on various Musina community WhatsApp groups.
Musina residents marched to the Vele Coal Mine last year to hand over a memorandum in which they demanded that the mine employ local residents. Around 117 CVs were submitted after the mine had apparently promised to hire job-seeking residents, but the residents say that nothing came of it. Reekson Matamela, the chairperson of Musina’s South African National Civic Organisation told Limpopo Mirror that the mine had let the residents down by postponing the meeting. “We are really disappointed in the manner that the Vele Coal Mine and the Musina Municipality are treating Musina’s residents. At the end of January, the community received correspondence that the mine was to carry out public-participation meetings at the Muswodi and New Nancefield community halls. These venues are all under Musina Municipality. To our surprise, the mine decided to postpone the meeting at Nancefield.”
Matamela said that when the community met with Vele Mine’s authorities later, they were told that the Musina Municipality had instructed them (the mine) to postpone the meeting. “We do not understand why the Musina Municipality interferes with the affairs of a private-sector entity,” he said.
But Mr Wilson Dzebu, the spokesperson for the Musina Municipality, denied these claims. “The municipality does not have control of the mine’s job-recruitment process. If there are individuals that are meddling with these processes (referring to individuals from the municipality), then they are doing it in a personal capacity without any mandate from the municipality. The municipality cannot be blamed for the postponement of the meeting. We are only supporting the mine by providing a venue where the meeting can be held,” Dzebu said.
Limpopo Mirror interviewed
several residents, including youths who had completed their matric five years ago and holders of university degrees who were looking forward to a chance to engage the mine, so they could learn how the job-recruitment process works. They were also looking forward to possible employment opportunities after the engagement.
“This was really a disappointment. Vele Mine cannot postpone a meeting an hour before it is to start. Most of the residents had already gathered at the Nancefield hall when we got the news that it was postponed,” said Fanie Ndou, who has a bachelor’s degree but has never been employed.
Residents vowed to continue blocking the municipal offices and the road leading to the Vele Coal Mine until both the mine and the municipality address them.
On Monday, 6 February, residents finally got their meeting, where their concerns were laid out on the table.

“No, I was not drunk at funeral,” says C2B De Poet
By our Art Correspondent
Well-known musical poet Mulweli Sithubi, better known as C2B De Poet, denied the allegations that he could not perform at the late Lindelani Nengovhela’s memorial service because he was drunk.
Sithubi said that he had prepared a beautiful send-off poem in honour of Nengovhela, the deceased partner of comedian Livhuwani Madadzhe. However, when Sithubi’s turn came, the programme director, Rapson Rambuwani, announced that Sithubi would not be given an opportunity to perform because he was drunk.
“We were supposed to get a poet to render an item, but we will not allow
him to perform because he is drunk. We are here to mourn, and we will not allow people to spoil this dignified send-off by doing anything unacceptable,” declared Rambuwani before the whole gathering last Friday.
Sithubi told Limpopo Mirror that he was unhappy that he could not pay tribute to the late Nengovhela because he was “side-lined” by the programme director. He admitted that he had taken “a few sips” but denied being drunk.
“I was prepared to perform, but I was disappointed when the programme director announced in public that he was not going to call [on] me to perform because I was drunk. After the announcement, all the cameras were zoomed in on me as the event was broadcast live to thousands of viewers on various
social-media platforms, thereby causing potential damage to my growing brand,” the musician said.
He added that, soon after the remarks by the programme director, he had received numerous calls from fans and members of the public who were rebuking him and wanting to know why he had gone to the memorial service under the influence of alcohol. “It was very hurting because I prepared a very good tribute poem that I could not perform.
I had informed my fans on social-media platforms that I would be performing, but the whole incident turned out to be an embarrassment and a turnoff. I believe the programme director has a personal vendetta against me because he could not even prove beyond reasonable doubt that I was intoxicated. How
Alleged cable thieves killed by angry mob
By Victor Mukwevho
Two men who were caught red-handed with stolen electrical cables at Zwigodini on Wednesday, 2 February, were beaten and burnt to death by angry community members.
According to an eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the two men had destroyed the electrical tower next to Tshipise Primary School the previous Saturday (28 January).
“We have had no network in the area since Saturday and started to investigate the situation. A taxi driver told us that two guys who boarded his taxi on Saturday were carrying two big bags, but he didn’t see what was inside the bags. We told all the taxi drivers who operate between Tshipise and Thohoyandou to be vigilant,” he said.
On Wednesday, the two men boarded the same taxi with the same suspicious bags. “The taxi driver phoned some members of the community and alerted them about the guys. We told him to drive slowly, and we followed the taxi,” the witness said. He said they had stopped the taxi at Zwigodini village and started searching the passengers’ bags, but the two men had refused to let them search their bags. “This infuriated members of the community, who searched their bags by force and found some stolen cables. One of the men was Zimbabwean, while the other one was a local guy,” he said.
According to the witness, the men were dragged back to Tshipise tsha Sagole, where members of the community started to assault them. Realising that the men were not going to tell
them who had sent them to steal the cables, the mob set them alight and burnt them to death.
“We are warning those who are thinking of stealing our electrical cables here at Tshipise tsha Sagole to think twice, because if we catch you, you will face the same consequences. You either take us to those who sent you, or we burn you to death,” the source concluded.
Meanwhile, Vhembe District’s acting police communications officer, Sergeant Vuledzani Dathi, confirmed that they have opened a murder docket in connection with the killing of the two suspected cable thieves. “People should refrain from taking the law into their own hands. We call on members of the community to hand people who are suspected of committing crimes over to the police,” he said.
could he say that without conducting a blood test to confirm that I was indeed drunk?”
The chairperson of the Vhembe District Music Forum, Dr Roxley Fhatuwani Masevhe, was shocked when hearing about the incident. He said artists should conduct themselves well because they acted as role models to society. “If it is true that Sithubi went to the memorial service to perform while under the influence of alcohol, his
behaviour is a shame to our music industry. We strongly condemn any type of behaviour that downgrades the image of the arts industry in Vhembe. Remember, we are creative artists, not creative drunkards. As leaders of this industry in Vhembe, we will summon him and vehemently rebuke him to make sure this does not happen again, especially during an occasion where people were in mourning for a loved one,” he said.

Mother weeps as suspects accused of killing her son get released

Load shedding is causing major headaches in funeral industry
By Kaizer Nengovhela
Over the past few months, Limpopo Mirror has been reporting on the struggles that businesses are faced with as the country’s energy crisis deepens. One industry in particular, however, faces serious problems with load shedding, namely mortuaries, who are battling to keep bodies from decaying.
To ensure the preservation of human remains, cold-storage facilities at mortuaries need to be kept at temperatures below five degrees Celsius. Doing so becomes a challenge with the continuing power outages, especially when stage-6 load shedding is implemented, and electricity is switched off for four hours at a time. Load shedding often comes to nine hours on such days.
Mr Sam Ntshauba, chairperson of the South African Funeral Practitioners Association, said that load shedding was becoming extremely problematic for owners of funeral parlours. “Government
still does not seem to have a solution for the energy crisis we are experiencing. They still have not come up with ways to help businesses deal with these costs, particularly funeral parlours,” he said.
According to Ntshauba,
bodies cannot be kept at mortuaries for long, even under normal circumstances. With the crisis around keeping fridges cold during load shedding, he is making an urgent appeal to the public to arrange for their loved ones to be buried shortly after death - as it was done during Covid-19 - to avoid burying a body when it starts rotting.
“We did not budget for load
Tsepho Munarini (22) was arrested a day after the incident, while Andani Munzha (18) was apprehended six days later.
When the suspects appeared in court last Thursday, Ramabulana led the crowd of angry villagers who arrived at the courthouse in two packed buses. He said that the problem with violent behaviour in the village of Dopeni was mainly caused by people who sold drugs to the youngsters. He and the other
The victim’s mother, Ms Tshililo Ralinala, was not aware that the two accused had been released on bail either when she arrived at court. “The investigating officer in this case never told us that the suspects applied for bail, let alone that they were released. How could they be granted bail so quickly after they [allegedly] have committed a murder? They are moving around freely as if they have killed a dog, when my son lies six feet underground,” she said.
She was crying hysterically, and family members and members of
the SAPS had to calm the distraught woman down before the court proceedings could continue. Later, outside the courthouse, Ms Ralinala said that the state had arranged several counselling sessions for her, but that this was not working. “I keep on thinking that one day I will see my son coming home with his camera bag. Justice in this country is for the rich and the connected. Because we are poor, the police and the justice system don’t respect our rights. But the Lord Almighty will fight for us,” she sobbed.
The case was postponed to 6 March 2023 for further investigations. The two suspects are still out on bail.
shedding, and it is affecting our prices as they have to make use of alternative ways to keep [bodies] cold.”
Mr Humbulani Bvumbi, managing director of Thabelo Funerals, said that although load shedding was messing everything up, they at least had measures in place to keep bodies cold for as long as possible. “As funeral undertakers, we are forced to have generators. This, however, consumes a lot of fuel, which costs a fortune, and, in the end, we hardly see any profit. I spend a lot of money each day to run the generator during load shedding. I have also had to change some of my equipment twice as it broke down with the power being switched on and off,” said Bvumbi.
Mr Kaizer Marindi, the owner of Marindi Funerals, said that not all funeral parlours could afford generators, especially the smaller ones.
“We understand that a funeral parlour needs to have a generator, but where do emerging funeral parlours generate the capital from to put in a generator?” he asked.

Manwadu is accused of hiring Tshianeo Munyai, Ndalamo Nemakhavhani and Pfunzo Lidzebe – all with previous criminal recordsto kill her husband, the late advocate James Manwadu, at their house at Maniini village on 12 November 2022. She was arrested after investigators found a paper trail, including bank statements that reflected payments amounting to R100 000 made by her to the accounts of the hitmen. Sources within the NPA further allege
that investigators also found phone records showing that she had been in close contact with the hitmen shortly before her husband was killed.
Only two of the co-accused, Lidzebe and Nemakhavhani, appeared with Manwadu on Friday. Munyai appeared in the Phalaborwa Magistrate’s Court on that same day in connection with another case against him. The co-accused are all still applying for legal aid lawyers.
While the three suspects were inside the courtroom, angry residents from Maniini village were chanting outside, saying that Manwadu must never come back to the village because she was a killer. One of the marchers, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said she was surprised that political parties had taken centre stage when Livhuwani Madadzhe, aka SABC Livhu, had appeared
in the same court the previous week.
“Does gender-based violence only affect political parties when a man kills a woman, or is it the same when a woman kills a man? I see no political parties or GBV activists here today. I call on political parties to stop using such tragedies for political grandstanding. We know that there is going to be national elections again next year, but they should not use our pain and suffering for political gain,” she said.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the NPA in Limpopo, Mashudu Malabi Dzhanga, said the state would oppose bail when the suspects appeared in the same court again on 11 April. “The suspects are facing serious crimes around the province, and they are not suitable candidates to be granted bail,” she said.
Daring armed robbery at post office
By Kaizer Nengovhela
The SAPS in Louis Trichardt are investigating an armed robbery at the local post office on Monday, 6 February.
According to an eyewitness who was present at the time, the post office officials were busy preparing to assist clients when seven men entered the building, pretending to be
waiting in line with the rest.
Suddenly, one of the suspects pushed to the front and jumped inside the teller’s working area, pointing a gun at the cashier and ordering her to lie down. He ordered the workers to hand him money, while the other suspects pointed guns at the clients.
One of the staff members at the post office told Limpopo Mirror that they were still in
shock after the incident and that the management had arranged counselling for the employees.
Police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo confirmed that the police are on a manhunt for seven suspects who had fled with an undisclosed amount of money. He appealed to anyone with relevant information to contact the nearest police station.

New radio station hits the airwaves
Entertainment
People from Musina and the surrounding areas woke up to the sounds of a new radio station on Sunday, 5 February. Community radio station Lotsha FM hit the airwaves for the first time after Beitbridge Shashe Community Radio Broadcasting Services had finally acquired its broadcasting licence from the Zimbabwean authorities.
Found on 90.1FM, Lotsha FM operates from Beitbridge town in Zimbabwe, under the auspices of the Broadcasting Association of Zimbabwe. The radio station has a strong signal in the Musina area, and its programmes are mainly presented in Tshivenda, one of the most spoken languages in the town of Beitbridge in Zimbabwe.
Rasta NK returns with a new single called Vha ya lutanya
Entertainment
Those who thought that Kuvhanganani Nemukula had completely disappeared from the limelight have a
surprise waiting. After the release of his debut album, Zwiito zwavho, in 2020, Nemukula, who is affectionately known as Rasta NK in local reggae circles, is happy to introduce his latest sinVha ya lutanya.
The single was released at the end of January this year availonline music platforms.
The upcoming star, who hails from Mavhunda village outside Thohoyandou, said he was inspired by the music of reggae legend Lucky Dube. “The late Lucky Dube’s music was close to my heart, and it had a huge influence on my music career. His music was about the practicality of life and that encouraged me to compose my own songs about what is happening in daily life,” he
Nemukula knows how tough the music industry is and he does not fool himself
into thinking that he could make a living solely from it. He works full-time as a bricklayer and makes music whenever he has time for it.
He said that although Vha ya lutanya had already been released, he planned on organising a formal launch for the single in March. “I have already started talking with fellow musicians to support me when we launch my single. The venue and other logistics will be communicated in due course.”
Nemukula added that the single had been received with acclaim from both his fans and radio stations. “Hearing Vha ya lutanya being played on national radio during the first week of its release made me the happiest artist on earth. I am also delighted that local community radio stations are giving it fair airplay, making it one of the most loved reggae songs locally. I am really thankful for this support because I couldn’t make it on my own without the assistance of the various stakeholders,” he said.
Takalani Rambuvha, a resident from Nancefield in Musina, is very impressed with the new radio station. “We are happy that we can now listen to Lotsha FM here in Musina. On their first day of broadcasting, they talked about many things that are happening in Musina. People from Musina were also calling in after the lines were opened. Of more importance is that the radio station broadcasts in pure Tshivenda, our own language,” he said excitedly.
The chairperson of the board tasked to ensure that Lotsha FM becomes a reality, Mr Mekia Muyambo, said the development was a great one for the surrounding areas. “It was not an easy task to take on. We had to ensure the station operated as per the licence issued by our government. We thank
everyone involved in making sure that Lotsha FM became a reality,” he said. The board’s secretary, Mr Mbongeleni Muleya, said Lotsha FM would be launched officially in Beitbridge town next Monday (13 February), during International Radio Day. “The radio station will mostly assist the rural community, who previously had little or no access to radio broadcasts. We will work hard to provide current information and get news from other areas in Zimbabwe and the neighbouring South Africa, especially in Musina, where we have a strong frequency. We will also focus on developing contemporary farming skills through educational programmes, reviving our culture, language and Tshivenda traditions through school radio lessons,” said Muleya.

The story of Majuta, The Passion of Life, is about to continue
By Thembi Siaga
Three months ago, the first episode of a local production, called Majuta, The Passion of Life, was released on YouTube, which turned out to be an instant hit. The producers are currently hard at work filming the second episode, which is due to be released by early April this year.
This drama-packed series, filmed in the Musina area, is a must-watch as it addresses the issues of gangsterism and human trafficking, centring on young boys who abduct young girls and compel them to engage in sex work for monetary compensation.
It tells the story of a young man named Aron Majuta, who joins a criminal gang because of his disadvantaged background and pressure from his girlfriend to maintain a luxurious lifestyle.
The storyline includes multiple languages, such as Tshivenda, Xitsonga, and Sesotho, with IsiZulu and English subtitles. The series was produced by Unity SA Visuals, which was established by Unity Phaswana.
Zwivhuya Sadiki, the director and script writer, who also plays the role of Majuta, said they had received a lot of positive feedback from their supporters. “We are glad that so many people have shown love and are eagerly awaiting the second episode. We keep our viewers glued to our dramas as we present insight and truth about human experiences.”
Sadiki said they wanted to teach the young about the hefty cost of instant success and the repercussions of criminal activities. “Many young people assume that joining a gang will shield them from violence at school or in the neighbourhood. Women
who experience physical or sexual violence at home may assume that joining a gang will provide them with safety, which is not the case,” he said.
Sheron Maluleke, who plays Majuta’s girlfriend in the story, said young men were often encouraged to join in gang activities as a consequence of pressure from their relationships. “It’s important to love and accept our partners for who they are, not just for the sake of money. My partner made illegal money to fulfil my desire for a luxurious lifestyle, which I achieved by putting pressure on him. However, his criminal actions resulted in his becoming a target of the community and the police,” she said. Viewers can still watch the first episode of Majuta, The Passion of Life on YouTube

Tshikovha has her fans begging for more
By Elmon Tshikhudo
The song Vhuthihi (Unity) by gospel diva Rhuu Tshikovha was composed specifically for the annual Together We Can Grow Fun Run Walk at Tshixwadza, but the positive reaction by fans at the event left her with no other option but to release it officially.
The single, which was released early in January this year, features award-winning artists Vendaboy Poet, Itani “Top”, and Accolly Mandiza, who also produced the song. Her manager, Mr Dovhani Mudzielwana, or “Mr MDO” as he is popularly known, is very enthusiastic about the new release. “We are so excited about the waves this song is making. It is intended to encourage and promote unity and togetherness among people in our communities. Besides promoting unity, our intention was also to identify talented youths, so we can showcase their talents,” he said.
“Vhuthihi caught the attention of a young producer, known as Killorbeezbeatz from Pretoria, who remixed the song and spiced it up with a touch of Amapiano. In this remix, Rhuu Tshikovha features one of the most gifted artists, award-winning Batondy, who is also known as Mujie.”
About her latest offering, Tshikovha said she was not
afraid to try other music genres.
“The song is not necessarily a full gospel track, but the word ‘unity’ is preached in many parts of the Bible. It is for us who are gifted with the talent to always bring this kind of message to our people through music, and who knows, it might bring positive changes for someone who might impact the whole world.
In all this I would like to thank my brother and manager, Mr MDO, for putting this project together. Musicians need a manager like him who is supportive and loyal,” she said.
Tshikovha has worked with top artists such as the late Dan Tshanda, with whom she produced the album Madzanga in 2016. In 2018, she featured on the international worshiping song of Xplicts Crew from Abuja, Nigeria, called Deeper
was released in 2021, followed by the single, Tribute to Dub, last year. The Next Chapter of Dub, which will be available in all digital music stores after its release, boasts thrilling songs such as My Help (featuring Asataluli Manngo), Dub it out, Blazing Saxo Dub, and Dub it slow. All the songs were composed and arranged by Netshishivhe himself and recorded at the Adziambei Music Academy and Deep Roots Studio.

Emmanuel Takalani Nevhungoni’s granny, Ms Anna Mukondeleli Nevhungoni, was a hardcore traditionalist who loved and was proud of her Vhavenda culture. Being born into this kind of environment, his own love of his culture developed very early on in his life.
Tshilombe Tsha Vhurendi, as Nevhungoni is popularly known, is fast becoming one of Limpopo’s most sought-after singing poets for live performances at functions and special occasions. The journey of the 25-year-old artist from Phiphidi Maha outside Thohoyandou started early in 1998 while he was in Tshiavha Primary School, and today his teachers and fellow learners can be proud of him.
He first realised his potential in 2019, with the release of his debut album, Rilwele Ramakole, which became the launchpad for his successful poetry career. This album was followed by Ri Vhana Vha Africa, released in 2021. His third offering, titled Matshilisano, was released in December last year, and continues to sell very well, contributing to his celebrity status.

Nevhungoni said that he felt very lucky because of the role his granny had played in teaching him about his culture at a young age as it had shaped his career. “I am very grateful and indebted to her. I also owe it to my fans and everyone who contributed to this project. I promise to give my best all the time.”
The album is available on all digital platforms, but those interested in hard copies can contact him directly on 071 240 2894.
Phalaphala FM’s shows were presented by the likes of Mpho Rathando, Jones Netshipise, Thikho Liphadzi, Rofhiwa Nethengwe and Mrs P, while Munghana Lonene FM’s presenters included Khensani Nyango, Pat Mathebula, Themba Chauke, DJ Mat, Lindiva, and Mathilda Chauke, to mention but a few.
According to Phalaphala FM’s programme manager, Ms Sharon Ravele, they realised that the villages within the Collins Chabane Municipality were centrally situated in the two radio stations’ broadcasting area, and they felt that visiting the area and interacting with their listeners would be important. “We are of the view that, when communities see their presenters in person, it revives their hope and happiness. We also wanted to show our listeners that we do care about them,” she said.
In her congratulatory message, Ravele said that, after all these years, the two stations continued to source fresh news and present their respective programmes to educate and entertain their listeners. “We thank the leadership and the two stations’ entire staff for their contribution towards the success of the two stations. We also thank the stations’ listeners for their support, because the station is what it is today because of them.”

Awelani Mainganye from Mpheni Block A is establishing himself in the world of art by adding a splash of colour, not to canvases but to personalised items, such as shoes, clothing and refrigerators. His goal is to challenge traditional fashion norms and produce original,
eye-catching designs.
Awelani’s artwork certainly is unique, infused with warm, vibrant colours. His artistic pursuits can be traced back to his early primary school days at Muthuhadini Combined School, although, he lost his enthusiasm for it for a while because of the lack of art classes offered in public schools.
In 2017, he successfully completed his matric and enrolled for a management-assistant course at Ekurhuleni West College in 2018. He dropped out in 2019 after he got a job as a data capturer at Wits RHI in Johannesburg, a multi-disciplinary research institute. While he worked there, he decided to buy himself a few brushes and paint and started painting T-shirts in his spare time. This, he said, had been inspired by his high school classmate Thinandavha
Mukondeleli.
“When I painted my first T-shirt, it attracted great interest from people around my community. I am grateful for Thinandavha, who played a crucial role by teaching me the basic skills of painting, and my clients for their support,” he said.
Awelani later expanded his skills when he started decorating refrigerators and shoes with his artwork as well. For this he uses acrylic paints in many different colours. Once he is done painting a refrigerator, he covers the surface with a varnish, so that the paint does not wash off.
The young artist is currently in the process of enrolling for an art course at the University of South Africa (Unisa). He expressed his desire to eventually open his own art school where he can hold
workshops to share his knowledge and inspire others who are interested in art. “My goal is to educate local people who love art and help them to sell their artwork online. I want to not only benefit myself, but also share my knowledge with others,” he said.

The general secretary of the South African Communist Party (SACP), Mr Solly Mapaila, said he hoped that the kingpins behind the murder in 2019 of the two SAMWU officials, Timpson Musetsho and Ronald Mani, would finally be arrested along with the killers and heavily punished for their deeds.
Mapaila addressed hundreds of people at the third annual
memorial lecture that was held at the Thohoyandou Town Hall on Saturday, 4 February, in remembrance of the two slain officials, who were gunned down in separate incidents for openly slamming municipalities in the Vhembe District that had invested millions of rands of public funds in the now-liquidated VBS Mutual Bank.
Mapaila was joined by Provincial SACP member and MEC for Education Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya, National Executive Member of the ANC
Soviet Lekganyane, Executive Mayor of the Vhembe District Dowelani Nenguda, and other guests.
Mapaila said that part of the memorial lecture was aimed at fighting for justice to be done and to urge the communities to continue to support the families of the two victims. He said that the delaying tactics that were used in arresting the suspects was a matter of grave concern.
Mr Matodzi Nevondo, one of the representatives of the two families, said that the support the affected families had been receiving so far was much appreciated. He called on leaders to mobilise communities to come in larger numbers when the pre-trial started in the Limpopo High Court in Thohoyandou from 20 to 24 March this year.
Three of the suspects, the Radzuma brothers (Percy, Simon and Ndivhuwo), will appear on charges ranging from murder to conspiracy to commit murder.
Their co-accused, Thabo Sibanze, will appear in the Sibasa Regional Court on 13 February on charges of intimidation and being in the country illegally.
Angry water-starved residents of Muledane threaten to close road
By Elmon Tshikhudo
Angry residents of Muledane have threatened to close the busy R524 road between Muledane and Thohoyandou until their demand of getting water is addressed.
Hundreds of community members, who claim that they have been pleading in vain with the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) as the water authority for a long time to supply them with water, gathered at the local circle at Muledane.
The protest started on Sunday, 29 January, and motorists were not allowed to pass.
Mr Shumani Nemukula, the chairperson of the Muledane Water and Essential Services Crisis Task Team, said the community had been without water for years. “Our situation
has been dire for years and we have engaged the municipality on many occasions. We were very happy when they came out to attend to our problem in 2021 and replaced the valves here next to the fire station. But they left the holes uncovered, which poses a danger to the community. To add salt to the wound, we still do not have water. We tried and gave them our proposals, but we were ignored,” he said.
Nemukula added that they had since realised that the community was being used as a political battlefield where officials settle their internal scores. “We have meetings with officials who promise us things, but they are never implemented. They tell us that they have reported everything to the office of the mayor, but when

we enquire from the mayor, he appears to be uninformed about our plight. We are here to get their attention, and we are resolute about getting it,” Nemukula said.
The VDM’s spokesperson, Mr Matodzi Ralushai, confirmed that they had received a complaint from the community. “The problem here is due to a number of factors, including vandalism of infrastructure and illegal connections. Coupled with the ever-growing population, water shortage is something we have to work on together to improve. We are busy with the community and their leaders, and as of now, we will be implementing shortterm interventions, like tankering and boreholes, while we work on a long-term solution,” he said.

Previously, the precious metals were sent overseas to be recycled; however, this renewable-energy facility is now managing the process locally, thereby avoiding large carbon emissions, in addition to stimulating the local economy.
Managed by Globeleq South Africa Management Services, panels are now safely being recycled across all the company’s six solar sites, unless they can be repaired, which is the first option. This is managed inhouse, with trained local staff who have been efficient in managing sizeable quantities.
“Previously, the precious metals had to be sent overseas to be recycled, but now we can avoid those large carbon emis-
80 cubes of hazardous waste on site at one time, which amounts to approximately 1 300 panels. As soon as we accumulate 1 000 panels, we take them to be recycled,” explained Marli Schoeman, environmental specialist for Soutpan Solar Power and Globeleq South Africa Management Services.
Panels are susceptible to lightening damage, and solar power projects expect a general rate of 0.1% panel failure. The first option is always to
repair the panels, which has the added benefit of upskilling and supporting local employment. “We have trained our staff on site to repair any panels that can be reused, instead of sending them off for recycling. This has been very successful, with thousands currently being repaired in-house,” added Schoeman.
Globeleq South Africa Management Services makes use of several other biodiversity interventions across their sites, in addition to this programme. Most of the plants have ceased washing their solar panels, which uses scarce water supplies in South Africa’s drought-prone areas. “Everyone assumes we wash the panels regularly, but we have discovered that rainfall is sufficient to wash the panels. Approximately 5 000 litres of water is saved per day through this initiative, and we haven’t washed the panels at Soutpan Solar Power for the last three years,” concluded Schoeman. Controversial RDP house to be moved to the “correct” site
By Victor Mukwevho
Pressure applied by representatives of the South African National Civic Organization (SANCO) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) probably helped to stop a project where an RDP house was being built on an incorrect site.
The chairperson of SANCO in Phiphidi, Mr Khathutshelo Tshipalafhasi, said they were asked to intervene and had to physically chase people away who were busy building an RDP house on a wrong stand, right next to a large house that has approximately nine rooms or more.
“As SANCO, we identified Stand no. 177 as [that of] the applicant. We were surprised when he (the applicant) abandoned the stand that was awarded to him and instructed the building contractors to build the RDP house next to his parents’ house, which is a large house,” he said.
Two EFF ward councillors in the area, Fhatuwani Begwa and Ernest Madzimbalala, entered the fray and called on all civic structures to attend a meeting where a decision was taken to contact the
Parents chase principal away because of school merger plans
By Kaizer Nengovhela
Mapakophele Primary School has been without a principal for the past month after angry parents and community members chased him away. They claim that the principal had lied to them when he told them the school was going to close and that they should take their children to other schools as it would be merged with Dzivhalanombe Primary.
The community representative, Mr Pro Rammbwa, said that they had called the circuit manager at the start of the school year on 11 January. “He told us that the proposal for the merging of the schools had been reversed. We have been threatened by the principal before that our school will
be closed and merged with Dzivhalanombe Primary because of our low enrolment of learners. So, we wrote letters to the circuit, arguing that Dzivhalanombe Primary was too far from Mapakophele village, and that learners would have to travel more than five kilometres to school every day. The children might be at risk of being kidnapped or going missing,” he said. Rammbwa said that they did not want the principal to set foot at the school again because the community was fed-up with him.
SGB secretary Ms Sarah Mufamadi said the department had been trying to merge the school with Dzivhalanombe Primary because of the low enrolment. “Last year, we received a letter from the department,
Thulamela Municipality about this matter. “Even though the municipality admitted what the applicant is doing is illegal, they did nothing to stop him from building the house at a wrong place. The building contractor continued to build the RDP house and members of the community had to go and chase them away,” said Tshipalafhasi.
The treasurer of SANCO at Phiphidi, Ms Humbulani Nelly Netshifhefhe, said they would not fold their arms when corruption took place in the village. “I am calling on the municipality to stop this nonsense. RDP houses are meant for people who don’t have shelter. This guy was allocated an RDP house at Stand no. 177 while he was still living with his wife and children. Now they are no longer together, and he is living with his parents in their big home. What does he need a house for?” she asked.
When Limpopo Mirror’s correspondent went to the house on Sunday, 29 January, he was threatened with violence. He was told that if he dared take a picture of the RDP house, he would be beaten up and sued. When
asked if the municipality knew where the RDP was being built, he said the matter was an arrangement between him and the local headman.
On Friday, 3 February, a meeting took place between all stakeholders, where a decision was taken that the RDP house being built in the wrong place would be demolished. The meeting was also attended by representatives from the Limpopo Department of Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (CoGHSTA).
When asked who was going to pay for the damage incurred in demolishing the present RDP house, the chairperson of SANCO in Phiphidi, Mr Tshipalafhasi, said the municipality had to deal with fraudsters within its ranks.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the Thulamela Municipality, Mr Nndwamato Tshiila, said after Friday’s meeting that all parties, including CoGHSTA, had decided to build the house where it had been allocated in the first place. “The RDP house will be built at Stand no 177, where it was allocated,” he said.
Tshikhudini homes still powerless
By Bernard Chiguvare
While people staying in numerous villages in the Vhembe District complain about the effects of loadshedding, some villages still do not have any electricity, in spite of the infrastructure’s being in place.
At Tshikhudini village, which falls under the Musina Municipality, Eskom started installing electricity meter boxes in 2018 at about 300 out of the 1 500 households. The remainder of the households were supposed to follow, but nothing has happened to date. The remaining 1 200 households still depend on candles for light and firewood for cooking and bathing.
According to Mr Stephances Tshinyelo, one of the community leaders, the lack of electricity puts the lives of these people at risk. “We live near the Nwanedi Game Reserve. It sometimes happens that wild animals escape and then wander around the area, which puts those who
go out to fetch firewood in the bush in danger. The village is next to some thick bushes, which make for a good hiding place for thieves or people dealing in illicit trade. This also endangers the lives of the villagers who must fetch their firewood from the bushes,” said Tshinyelo.
The lack of electricity is not just affecting villagers’ normal day-to-day living and jeopardising their safety. Learners who must study at night are also affected, as they must read their books by candlelight.
Tshinyelo added that even the households with electricity faced their own challenges.
“Those people must travel all the way to the Eskom office in Tshilamba, which is about 50km from Tshikhudini village, just to buy electricity. They cannot buy online as we were informed the meters have not been registered with Eskom. The whole journey to Tshilamba and back costs R70. We are calling on Eskom to register
our meter boxes, so we can buy electricity online,” said Tshinyelo.
According to Eskom’s manager in Musina, a contractor must register the meter boxes with Eskom upon installation before customers are able to buy electricity directly from Eskom.
Musina Municipality’s spokesperson, Mr Wilson Dzebu, said a list of the people and their meter numbers must be sent to the municipality, so that the municipality and the ward councillor could work with Eskom to have the meters registered. Regarding the households that still do not have meter boxes, Dzebu said that the project was mostly complete, except for a few households where they could not get access to install meters as the people had gone to work. He said the municipality would arrange and see if post-connection was possible, even though the contractor was no longer on site.
informing us that the school will be merged with Dzivhalanombe Primary, but we are happy and relieved because they reversed the proposal. We can’t allow our children to travel such long distances and cross the river. They pass through bushes, which is dangerous,” said Mufamadi.
She confirmed that the parents and the community had chased the principal away on the basis of different allegations.
The Department of Education’s spokesperson, Mr Mike Maringa, said that the principal was currently reporting at the Nzhelele West Circuit every day. He said that the department would meet with parents and SGB members to resolve the matter as soon as possible.

Gondeni’s Big Cat hold Dipeni to 2-2
By Frank Mavhungu
The Safa Vhembe Regional League game between Gondeni Big Cat and Dipeni FC, played at the Sambandou Dipeni Grounds on Sunday, ended in a 2-2 draw. Although their playmaker, Thanyani Phandavhudzi, was reprimanded with a card in the opening minutes of the game, the caution did not deter Big Cat’s players from displaying illegal tackles. Big Cat were awarded a free kick towards the end of the first half. Their lethal striker,
Sweet revenge for Mpheni Home Defenders in clash against Bullets
By Kaizer Nengovhela
Mpheni Home Defenders deposited three points into their league account with their 1-0 victory over Vondwe XI Bullets in their Safa Limpopo ABC Motsepe League match at the Makhado Show Grounds on Saturday.
Defenders thereby avenged their 1-0 loss to Bullets a fortnight ago at Tshifudi Stadium.
The first 20 minutes of the game were characterised by rough tackles by the Bullets defenders. The referee, Mr Eric Sebabi, refused to see any of the culprits go unpunished. He
flashed the first yellow card in the 10th minute. Rudzani Ndou tackled Thabelo Tshikweta from behind just outside the penalty box and Sebabi was quick to reprimand him with a card.
Bullets squandered two obvious scoring chances in the 14th and 18th minute respectively. Lavhelesani Murema dribbled past two defenders in a row and hesitated for far too long to unleash with the keeper already beaten, until he lost possession. As if that was not enough to anger the supporters, Mulamuleli Netshidzivhe committed a similar blunder four minutes later. The half-time score was still 0-0.
In the second half, Defenders matched Bullets’ efforts, but their original stamina faded. Defenders then started to take command of the game, searching for goals. In the 77th minute, Freedom Nyundu tried his luck from outside the box with a volley, and this proved enough to give his team victory.

Lindelani Nephalama, caught the keeper napping with a half volley from the free kick. The visitors from Ha-Makuya village enjoyed their 1-0 lead until proceedings for the first half came to an end. The home side found the equaliser in the 59th minute. Shudufhadzo Mashawana tried his luck with a ground cutter from the 30-metre area. The keeper of Big Cat, Ndivhuwo Thabi, watched helplessly as the ball went beyond his reach. The struggle continued, with the visitors throwing missiles from all angles in
search for the winning goal. They reclaimed the lead in the 74th minute when Thanyani Phandavhudzi beat the keeper with a ground cutter, following a scramble within the box.
Livhuwani Mmbegwa of Dipeni was brought down in the penalty area late in the game. The assistant referee raised his flag, alerting the referee that an infringement that warranted him to award a penalty had taken place. Muano Mashapha scored from the white spot to bring the final score to 2-2.
Sweet revenge for Home Defenders
Another tricky hurdle lies ahead of Maindis Ladies
By Frank Mavhungu
After losing 0-2 to Royal AM at the Malamulele Stadium last Saturday, Maindis Ladies will have another mountain to climb this weekend. They will travel to Pretoria on Saturday for their match against Mamelodi Sundowns, which will be played at the Loftus Stadium.
History shows that Maindis are still to win a league match against Sundowns after they had gained promotion from the Sasol Women’s League two years ago. Saturday’s fixture will be the second at home in succession for Sundowns. This after they had narrowly beaten Richmond United 1-0 at the same venue last Saturday. The head coach of Maindis,

The Safa Limpopo ABC Motsepe league match between Munaca FC and United Artists ended in a 1-0 victory for Artists in a well-attended match played at the Makhado Show Grounds on Saturday.
That Artists were going to collect full points was evident from the start as the hosts were making numerous unforced errors.
Munaca could only blame themselves for the defeat as they squandered numerous scoring chances throughout the game. Their first player to cause an upset was Thakala Sane. In the 10th minute he received a well-timed pass from Rudzani Rambau from just outside
the box. Instead of picking his spot and unleashing quickly, Sane held onto the ball for far too long, until he lost possession.
Andrew Nenzhelele committed an unforgettable blunder a little later. He shot wide from the edge of the box with the keeper already beaten.
Things turned against Munaca when Artists were awarded a free kick outside the box in the referee’s optional time. Rilinde Manwenda of Artists caught the Munaca keeper napping and beat him with a good header to seal the game.
Artists’ captain, Robert Baloyi, was another player to cause an upset. Baloyi could not believe his eyes when his half-volley hit the woodwork and bounced back into the field of play.
Mr Sipho Mabuza, is adamant that Sundowns will have to sweat if they want to grab the full points at stake on Saturday. He said that his players would not make the same mistakes they had made in their game against Royal AM. According to him, his players had underestimated the visitors from Durban and were severely punished for that.
The combination of Sophy Magoro and Xiluva Tshabalala in the striking force of Maindis is likely to cause a bit of panic for the Sundowns’ defenders on Saturday. Mamelodi Sundowns are the defending champions.
Also on Saturday, TUT Football Club will entertain the newly promoted Copper Belts FC at the TUT Campus Stadium. Copper Belts had
started the season with a bang, following their 2-1 victory over University of Pretoria Ladies at the Seshego Stadium.
Thunderbird Ladies will enjoy the home-ground advantage in their match against Durban Ladies, which will be played at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth. Royal AM will play against First Touch Academy at the Chatsworth Stadium in Durban. First Touch failed to impress their home crowd when they played to a goalless draw with TUT Football Club at the Seshego Stadium in Polokwane last Saturday.
Sunday’s fixtures are University of Pretoria Ladies vs TS Galaxy and University of Johannesburg FC vs Coal City Wizards.

Vondwe Bullets must beat Giyani
By Frank Mavhungu
With most of the teams left with six matches to wrap up their league programme for the current soccer season, this weekend will be a busy one for the teams affiliated to the Limpopo Stream of the ABC Motsepe League. Three matches will be played on Friday afternoon, while the rest of the fixtures are scheduled for Saturday.
The Tshifudi Stadium is expected to be the centre of attention on Saturday afternoon. This is where the much-awaited match between Vondwe XI Bullets and Giyani Happy Boys will take place.
Happy Boys and Bullets are closely competing for the league title. The Giyani side are currently lying in the second position on the log standings with 26 points gained from 11 matches, while Bullets are perched in the third place with 16 points from the same number of matches.
The head coach of XI
Bullets, Mr Lufuno Ndou, is optimistic that nothing will stop his team from collecting the maximum points at the expense of Happy Boys, come Saturday. He stressed the fact that their aim was to win the match to keep their title hopes alive. Bullets are still fresh from a 0-1 defeat at the hands of Mpheni Home Defenders.
United Artists will host Mikhado FC at the Makhuvha Stadium. United Artists had moved a few steps up on the log standings with their superb performance in their last four matches. Mikhado
are fighting for survival. They have managed to win only two of the 11 matches they have played to date. Munaca FC will visit Emmanuel FC, with whom they will wrestle for league points at the Giyani Stadium. Ngoabe City Motors will play their second home match in a row. They will host Phinnet City at the Jane Furse Stadium in the Sekhukhune area. The other fixtures are The Dolphins FC vs Eleven Fast Tigers, Tubatse United vs Ditlou FC and PJ Stars vs Mighty FC.
The Gunners win KFC U/13 Cup
Sport Development
The Gunners team was triumphant during the KFC U/13 Top 8 Soccer tournament that was played at the Mabaleng Sports Grounds on Saturday, 28 January. They beat Hollywoodbets Mabaleng FC 6-5 on penalties in the final match.
The eight teams from the
Sinthumule and Kutama area that took part in the tournament were Tshiozwi Dynamos, Madombidzha Celtic, The Gunners FC, Hollywoodbets Mabaleng Development, Maita Zwitoma FC, Gogobole Chippa FC, Gogobole Madrid FC and Zoutpansberg Powerline FC.

Mabaleng Development in the final. They played to a 0-0 draw and the winner had to be decided by a penalty shootout.
The tournament was organised by Mamu Community Development. According to Mr Jafter Mamugudubi, spokesperson for Mamu, they were impressed with the commitment of the teams and the preparations of the young players. He said that their mission was also to identify talented young players and provide opportunities for such players to develop their skills further. Ultimately, they want these players to be spotted by the senior teams.
The coach of the Gunners, Hector Malange, was very proud of his team’s performance. “I’m very happy and proud of my boys,” he said. He promised that they will defend the title in future championships.
Mamugudubi extended a special word of thanks to the sponsors of the tournament. Apart from the main sponsor, KFC, the following businesses also contributed: Premjee & Son Cash and Carry, Hollywoodbets, Talisman Tool Hire, Collins Sebola Group, Hyundai Louis Trichardt, Coca Cola, Mikasa, Trade Post 2076 CC & Afrox, Postnet Makhado, Nkoli Enterprise, Phadziri and Son Bus Service and Soutpansberg Cold Storage.
The head coach of Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila FC (TTM), Mr Johnny Ferreira, strongly believes that something is missing in his team. During an interview with him shortly after his team’s 1-2 defeat at the hands of Platinum City Rovers in their Motsepe Foundation Championship League game, which was played at the Thohoyandou Stadium on Saturday, the 65-year-old mentor said that he could not understand why his team had suffered such an embarrassing defeat as they had been controlling the game.
Ferreira said that two of their new players from Royal AM had not given their best in the game. He was, however, not blaming the two players for the defeat and said one simply had to accept that the team’s efforts had not been good enough.
He said that the team’s performance was improving, but that he would be working on the players’ fitness and target shooting in the coming two weeks while other teams would be engaged in their Nedbank Cup KO Competition campaigns.
Mr Ferreira’s counterpart from City Rovers, Mr Tesco Macheke, said that his team
CCER S LOGS
was on the right track. He reckoned that for them to be able to collect the full points away from home was a clear indication that they were serious about promotion.
Vhadau Vha Damani were the first to find the net on Saturday. Issa Sarr headed home after a corner kick that was taken by Thokozile Nkabinde. The visitors from Potchefstroom fought back three minutes before the referee blew the half-time whistle. Tshepo Malope hooked in the ball after a scramble within the box. Malope completed his brace with a header in the dying minutes of the game.

VFA donate vital league points to Magesi
By Frank Mavhungu
Venda Football Academy (VFA) are still battling to come to terms with the 0-1 defeat they suffered at the hands of Magesi FC in their Motsepe Foundation Championship League match that was played at the Thohoyandou Stadium last Friday afternoon.
The head coach of VFA, Mr Simo Dladla, described the defeat as a hard blow to the team. He said that the team would have been in the hot race for the league title, had they managed to collect the three points at stake. He said that what was making accepting the defeat difficult for him was the fact
that his team had squandered numerous scoring chances in the game.
VFA would have moved to the 10th position on the log standings, had they managed to beat Magesi. Instead, they are currently in the 13th position with 18 points.
Dladla partially blamed his defenders for losing concentration in the dying minutes of the game. He said that even a draw would have been better, although their target had been to win the match. According to him, the defeat will serve as a wakeup call to both the players and the technical staff. He added that they would make sure that they won most of their remaining matches to revive their hopes

of promotion.
VFA’s next fixture will be against Baroka FC, with whom they will test their strength at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane next Saturday (18).
The newly appointed head coach of Magesi FC, Mr Clinton Larsen, was singing the praises of his players after the game. He said the victory was a warm welcome for him to the club after he had joined the Polokwane side early last week.
The goal through which Magesi earned three significant points came via Manuel Kambala during the referee’s optional time. He beat the keeper with a long-range half volley.
As one of many ways to try and save the team from possible relegation, Black Leopards have appointed Mr Owen da Gama to the position of head coach. According to the chairman of the club, Mr David Thidiela, Mr Da Gama’s appointment came into effect on Monday this week. Mr Thidiela said that the 61-year-old mentor would be introduced to the players during the team’s training session at the Malamulele Stadium today (Thursday) His appointment came after Lidoda duvha had parted ways with the head coach of the team, Mr Johnny Ferreira, three weeks ago. Mr Thidiela said that he was convinced that Mr Da Gama’s arrival at the club would end the team’s scoring drought. Black Leopards are currently rooted at the bottom of the log with 13 points.
A quick glance at Mr Da Gama’s coaching history shows that Black Leopards could hardly have appointed a more suitable candidate. Rubberdol, as he was known during his days as a soccer player, played for a number of local professional teams and abroad before he retired.
His road to fame started when he was appointed the head coach of the now-defunct Silver Stars FC, way back in 2000.
At that stage, Silver Stars were campaigning in the then Vodacom Promotional League. He stayed at Silver Stars until 2007, when he migrated to Orlando Pirates. His next stop was at Free State Stars. Some of the teams he oversaw between 2008 and 2012 include Bloemfontein Celtic, Platinum Stars and Dynamos FC.
After working as assistant coach and head coach for Bafana Bafana between 2014 and 2016, Mr Da Gama moved to Highlands Park FC, where he stayed until 2021. He was appointed the head coach of TS Galaxy FC in 2021, where he stayed for 259 days. His last stop was at Sekhukhune United, where he worked as assistant coach until his contract expired in June last year. Mr Da Gama could not be reached for comment at the time of our going to press.
Mpheni Home Defenders up against Clarewood JPM in Nedbank clash
By Frank Mavhungu
Mpheni Home Defenders are leaving no stone unturned in their preparations for their Nedbank Cup Round-32 match against Clarewood JPM FC that will be played at the Thohoyandou Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The head coach of Home Defenders, Mr Sydwell Phuravhathu, has reason to believe that they will use Clarewood as their stepping stone to the next round of the prestigious competition. He said that although they were campaigning in the same division as Clarewood, they would take nothing for granted and would try and use their home-ground
advantage. Clarewood are campaigning in the Western Cape Stream of the ABC Motsepe League.
Mr Phuravhathu said that team members were training twice a day and they worked hard on their fitness. Should the game go into the 30 minutes extra time, they will be prepared.
The spirits are high in the Home Defenders’ camp. They beat the stubborn Vondwe XI Bullets 1-0 at the Louis Trichardt High School Grounds last Saturday.
Home Defenders have assembled their best players for Saturday’s match. Their number one goalkeeper, Ludick Mkhatswa, is one of the best goalies in the league. The team’s playmakers, Gift
Nemutandani, Freedom Nyundu and Adivhaho Madzivha, will be expected to keep the fire burning in the middle of the park.
In another Nedbank Cup clash, Venda Football Academy will play against BlackCross FC at the Dr Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein.
The other Round-32 fixtures are: Cape Town Spurs vs Baroka FC, Maritzburg United vs Kaizer Chiefs, Golden Arrows vs Pretoria Callies, Stellenbosch FC vs Swallows FC, Cape Town All Stars vs Orlando Pirates, TS Galaxy vs Amavarara FC, Amazulu vs Tornado FC, Mkhambathi FC vs Casric Stars, Cape Town City vs Royal AM and Polokwane City vs Chippa United.
