Bitter feud between Makhadzi and manager

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho The queen of Tshivenda wedding songs, Makhadzi, dropped a bombshell when she started uploading a stream of status updates on her Facebook page, demanding her “monies” from her “abusive” manager, Rita Dee, on Monday.

to Instagram where she wrote that she “was ready to leave everything that belongs to my management company and go” after she allegedly realised that she was being ripped off.

Following the Instagram post of last year, both Rita Dee and Makhadzi appeared on Vhembe FM, claiming that Makhadzi’s social media account had been hacked and that all things on their side were in order. However, Makhadzi had on Monday revealed in a live telephonic conversation with fellow artist Prifix that she had been coaxed to “protect her relationship” with her manager by those closest to her and her manager.

However, this time around she is adamant that she has had enough of both financial and emotional abuse from Rita Dee Entertainment.

She wrote: “Ndi tshi zw iposa daledaleni hu pfi ndi sycho... ebooo nne ndi afa nga vhulwadze ha mbilu lini ene muthu o ditakalela. Ngeno nne ndi tshi tea u la tshelede yanga u nga ndi khou tou koloda kha matshonise (When I complain on public platforms about non-payment, I get labelled a psycho. Now I am afraid that I will finally die from a heart attack while the abuser is at peace with herself. I see no reason why I should utilise my money in a way

which suggests that I have borrowed it from a loan shark).”

However, she added another status update where she said: “No need to get a new manager; I need [Rita Dee], she needs me [but] she must just change how she manages her things when it comes to finance.

They say Facebook doesn’t solve problems but sometimes [it] can heal our hearts because now I am in pain and I have no one to talk to. I am just crying alone because [Rita Dee] has switched off her phones [when I called for payments].”

However, Makhadzi’s fans didn’t take kindly to her diplomatic attitude towards the matter; they wanted to help her “get out of the bondage of abuse”.

Makhadzi is said to have appeared in 48 gigs in December, and her rates per gig normally range from R35 000 to R50 000, figures which suggest that she had earned more than R1,6 million in revenue for the month. Now the struggle is on for her to get her share from the December gigs’ income.

On Tuesday, at 13:02, Makhadzi wrote on her Facebook page: “Hi guys. Thanks for the love and support on #FreeMakhadzi and tweets/Facebook posts etc.

I am now legally represented and won’t be doing any media interviews. Hope 2020 is kind to you all.”

Rita Dee was not available for comment.

Tshikhafoma’s king, queen crowned

By Mbulaheni Ridovhona The king and queen of Tshikhafoma were recently crowned during a beauty pageant at George Muri Lodge in Tshikombani.

The winners were: Phindulo Tony Khedzi (king), Mulisa Mukhavhuli (1st prince), and Thatoo Lebonye (2nd prince), Ndaedzo Matodzi (queen), Ambani Budeli (1st princess), Thovhedzo Netshimbolimbo (2nd princess), Rofhiwa Matamela (Miss Popularity), Zinzi Rabada

(Miss Enterprise), Fulufhedzani Tshisevhe (Miss Personality), and Amphulusaho Mushadu (best philanthropist).

In the junior category, Tondani Murangi was crowned the queen and Lutendo Ndou the junior princess.

Speaking to Limpopo Mirror, the queen, Ndaedzo Matodzi, said that she felt happy and blessed “because this was my first time winning such a big title after trying so many times without success”.

The 19-year-old said she was very passionate about modelling and she wanted to use her title to help those who were less fortunate and to boost the confidence of young girls who did not believe in themselves.

The founder of the pageant, Pfano Witty Mbodi, said that their purpose “is to unleash hidden talents in our youth and to teach humanity, as we have a charity programme which we do yearly. We also aim to teach our youth on how to become entrepreneurs as jobs are scarce”.

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho A 62-year old woman, Sophie Maringa Kubayi, and her two sons, Musa Loverboy Hlungwani (43) and Sergie Hlungwani (35) appeared in the Tiyani District Court on a murder charge on Tuesday.

The three were arrested in connection with the killing of Mrs Kubayi’s husband at Tiyani village on 31 December. The suspects had allegedly accused Kubayi of practicing witchcraft.

An argument started at about 08:00 on that day, after which the victim was apparently strangled to death inside one of the rooms. One of the sons allegedly complained that his father had bewitched him, as every time he married a woman, she would not stay long.

The police reacted to a report about the incident and, on arrival at the scene, the deceased was found with bruises, lying motionless in one of the rooms.

The provincial commissioner of Limpopo, Lt-Gen Nneke Ledwaba, has condemned this incident and has warned community members to desist from accusing other people of practicing witchcraft and then killing them.

The three will appear in court again on 6 February. They all remain in custody.

The mayor of Makhado Municipality, Cllr Samuel Munyai, described the death of Kuaho as a terrible blow to the community of Makhado.

“His death has taken a real comrade, confidante and inspirational leader from both young and old people in our community. We are seriously saddened by his death because he still had so much to offer to this community,” he said.

The family spokesperson, Mr Elvis Ramalwa, said that they were consoled by the massive support from family, friends and community members. He left his wife and one child.

Kuaho will be buried on Saturday at Vleifontein. The service will start at 06:00.

Patrick Ramaano learner is Limpopo’s top matriculant

By Kaizer Nengovhela Mutshidzi Ganyane (17) of Patrick Ramaano Secondary School in Nzhelele is the top pupil in Limpopo. This was announced by Education MEC Polly Boshielo during a ceremony at the Ranch Motel outside Polokwane on Wednesday.

She obtained seven distinctions, namely in mathematics, physical science, life science, geography, Tshivenda, life orientation and English first additional language.

Asked about the secret behind her outstanding performance, Ganyane said that time management, discipline and hard work were the most important things that had helped her to achieve good results. She said that her success was due to the grace of God. She added that, had it not been for the support she had received from her teachers and parents, she would have not made it. “It was not that easy. Success only comes after hard work,” she said. Ganyane encouraged other pupils who had not made it to work very hard and not give up. “Your knock-down is not your knockout,” she said. She encouraged

other learners to study rather than fool around. “They must just cut the time of going out to parties. Watching TV also does not help, especially watching programmes that are not educational,” said the soft-spoken Ganyane.

Mutshidzi Ganyane plans on studying computer engineering at the University of Pretoria this year. Asked if she had already secured a bursary, Ganyane said that many companies had offered to finance her studies and she was expected to choose one.

During Wednesday’s function, MEC Boshielo said that the province’s pass rate had increased by 3,8%, but she believed that some schools had not performed as well as they should have. “Last year we worked very hard to improve our matric results,” said Boshielo. “We organised massive winter classes and went into partnership with SABC radio and community radio stations to help us with revision for the Grade 12 learners.”

Boshielo expressed her gratitude towards the parents and guardians who had given their children the necessary support and encouragement during this time. “The importance of the

role of parents should never be underestimated, as it is critical in sustaining and bolstering the teaching and learning process.

The results achieved by the teachers did not happen by accident or luck. It is a result of hard work and dedication.

Teachers in this province committed themselves in ways that should be an example to the rest of their profession and we truly appreciate their selfless contribution,” said the MEC. Boshielo said Mbilwi Secondary School in Sibasa had once again occupied the number one spot as best-performing school.

Rovha Kharivhe becomes Africa’s “highest” dentist

By Anton van Zyl Thohoyandou-based dentist Rovha Kharivhe entered the new decade on an exceptionally high note. He

scaled Africa’s highest mountain, Mt Kilimanjaro, and for a short while he probably stood tall as the highest dentist in the world, at an altitude of 5 895 metres above sea level.

Rovha formed part of a team of 11 South Africans who set off on 27 December from Moshi town in Tanzania to scale Africa’s highest mountain. The plan was to start scaling the summit on 31 December and view the dawn of a new year and decade the following morning from Uhuru, Mt Kilimanjaro’s highest peak.

The team of climbers included Anton van Zyl, publisher of the Limpopo Mirror, and his friend from Vosloorus, Zaid Khumalo. Zaid is the co-owner of the Kathorus Mail, a newspaper distributed in Gauteng’s East Rand.

The team started off at Machame gate, at 1 800 metres above sea level.

At that point, the weather is warm and humid as can be expected from a country situated on the equator. The first day’s walking stretches through the stunningly beautiful rain forest.

The forest lived up to expectations and within a few kilometres the climbers had to get out their raincoats as the rain started to belt down.

The group opted for the seven-day Machame route, which allows time for the climbers to acclimatize and become used to the altitude. One of the greatest dangers of such a mountain is altitude sickness. Above 3 500 metres the air starts to get “thin”, making it difficult for the lungs to collect enough oxygen.

The first overnight stop was at Machame camp, at 2 835 metres above sea level. Fortunately, the group did not have to carry all their own luggage. Mt Kilimanjaro has turned into a major employer for Tanzania, generating thousands of jobs for the local people. Each group of climbers is accompanied by guides, porters, chefs and even a “porta potty” is carried along to assist when nature calls.

The second day of climbing was shorter but much steeper. The lush forest changed into rocky bush terrain, and when the group reached Shira Cave camp, the elevation was already at 3 750 metres. The jackets started coming out as the wind brought in icy weather from the mountain.

Day three saw the group walking all the way up to Lava Tower camp, situated at 4 600 metres above sea level. The strategy is to “walk high and sleep low”, to help climbers acclimatize. Mt Kilimanjaro’s three peaks were formed after volcanic eruptions millions of years ago. One volcanic cone, Shira, is now extinct and eroded,

while the other two, Mawenzi and Kibo, “melted” together after subsequent eruptions. The climbers had the opportunity to cross this vast terrain that almost resembles a moon landscape. After spending some time at Lava Tower, the group went down to sleep at Barranco Camp, still high at 3 985 metres.

Day four saw the climbers tackling the arduous Barranco Wall. The route seems to go almost straight up the cliffs and one section of the path is so narrow that only one climber at a time can shuffle past the rock face.

This section is aptly called the “kissing rock” as climbers literally hug the rock to ensure that they do not tumble down hundreds of metres.

After spending some time at the high altitude, the group “dropped” down to Karanga camp at an altitude of 4 041. Considering that the Soutpansberg mountain range is just over 1 700 metres above sea level (at its highest point), this is still a considerable height.

The dreaded day five started early on 31 December with a hike to Barafu Camp, which is situated at 4 681 metres above sea level. The distance between the camps is less than nine kilometres, but the team still took about five hours to reach what is also called “base camp”. After lunch, the climbers immediately went to sleep in preparation of the summit attempt, which started at just after 23:00.

The big test started that night with groups of climbers, armed with tiny headlights, making their way up the mountain peak. The weather was exceptionally nasty, with temperatures far below zero. To make things worse, a strong wind made life even more uncomfortable. After a couple of hours, some climbers started turning back, realising that the mountain might take much more from them than they were prepared to offer.

For the ones such as Rovha and Anton, who battled on, a surprise waited.

With the sun appearing way below on the far horizon, conditions started to improve. At the top the mountain was clad in a white jacket and Kilimanjaro almost appeared to have decided to embrace the adventurers. When they reached Stella Point, the second-highest peak, the mood changed from almost desperate to optimistic. Stella Point is roughly another 400 metres from Uhuru peak, but this journey takes the better part of an hour to

complete.

The dawn of the new decade saw dozens of climbers shuffling along the snowy path to the sign that says: “Congratulations, you are now at Uhuru peak, Tanzania, Africa’s highest peak.” For the climbers from Limpopo, this moment was especially emotional.

Anton was joined by his two sons, Jaco and Elardus, bringing the total of the “Limpopo boys” to four.

“When I reached the summit, I don’t even think I had the right words to describe the experience. It was awesome, unbelievable, exhilarating with a feeling of contentment. It still feels like a dream even today,” said Rovha.

For Rovha, the most challenging part was the weather. “Coming from Limpopo, I’d never experienced anything below freezing point. To cope under such extreme conditions was very daunting, especially on summit night,” he said.

After summiting, the climbers had to make their way down the mountain, dropping down to Barafu Camp for a quick lunch. The weary group then had to tackle another four-hour walk to Mweka Camp, which meant a drop of close to 3 000 metres. The following morning, they made their way down to Mweka Gate, where the trip ended.

“I have always enjoyed adventure, but this was quite different. It’s tough, it does test one’s faith, physique as well as mental strength,” said Rovha.

Rovha had another reason why he wanted to reach Kilimanjaro’s highest peak. “I have a delinquent child who is very intelligent but lacks motivation.

All the while going up, I was praying that when he sees the difficulties I went through to get to the top, somehow he’ll get fired up again,” he explained.

Rovha had only praise for the guides and assistants in Tanzania, as well as his fellow climbers. “I left home a lone adventurer but ended up with a group of fellow South Africans who I met for the first time at Nairobi’s airport in Kenya. The camaraderie that prevailed within the group helped a lot; there was motivation, love, laughter, tears and fun. The expedition team (guides, cooks, waiters and porters) were fantastic. One can’t help but admire their work ethic. If our communities were as motivated as those guys are, South Africa would be an even better place to live in, especially economically,” he said.

Justice Nemaah releases new album

By Mbulaheni Ridovhona Justice Nemaah recently released his fourth album, At the feet of Jesus.

The album is made up of 17 songs.

Some of the songs are Ngelekanyo dzawe, Ramakole, You are my life, Muphulusi, Ro tanzwiwa, Muya mukhethwa, Igama lakho, and Siyabonga.

Nemaah said that the song Ro tanzwiwa spoke about God's love. "It also speaks about how He died on the cross for us and also of our being freed from sin and that we are now called his," he said.

He released his first album, Idani kha Yeso, in 2011, and it was followed by A huna munwe in 2013. In 2015, he released Ramakole. "I am committed to spreading the word of God through my music, and I want to

use this album to connect people with God. I was born in a musical family and inherited the musical abilities from my grandparents. I have been a churchgoer since I was a kid, so gospel music is the only thing that I know. I have never liked any other music besides Godly music,” he said.

The 30-year-old Justice Nemaah was born Justice Nematswerani and he hails from Maraxwe village. He was introduced to music at the age of 15. "I started singing in Sunday school at Christ Faith Fellowship Centre and later joined the church choir at the age of 17. The choir conductor saw potential in me and eventually moved me to the worship team when I was 18," he said.

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho A resident of Ha-Mandiwana village in the Nzhelele area, Vhushaka “King Piny” Matika, is taking his music to another level and aims to achieve great things in 2020.

King Piny is an upcoming hip hop artist whose music has reached many people via airplay on some community radio stations and his frequent appearances in public gigs.

“I am a storyteller who uses the VenRap genre, and as such I have become popular with my new way of reaching people's hearts with my verses,” he said. “Give me a microphone and I'll show you flames.”

He discovered his singing talent in 2015 at the age of 12. “My friend and I used to write lyrics that were more poetry, and as this is a fact, there's a great relationship between poetry and hip-hop,” he said. “We used to record such material on our phones and share it around with our friends and other contacts, who all showed interest in what we were doing.”

King Piny has since written and

recorded many singles that have all made a name for him in the local music industry. “Music means the world to me, and through music I get to talk about my feelings about the world,” he said. “I rap from the bottom of my heart.”

He is known for singles such as Ghetto-life ( ft AdroitBeatz), Hard life telling story ( ft Suppreme hela), Hardlife ( ft Batondy), and Vhutshilo ( ft Eto). “To me, music is a vital tool to also fight crime and create a space for entertainment and socialising among youths,” he said. “I am saying all that from experience, since I spend most of my time either writing or listening to music.”

King Piny coordinates a monthly poetry and music event called Ghettofest in his village, where all young artists and upcoming artists are invited to showcase their raw talents.

“The event aims to give local artists a chance to perform their music because that's where growth starts,” he said.

He is one youth who aims to help build his community through music and other youth-orientated activities.

Shihundla was excited about the publication of his book and said that he had given himself enough time to research and write the book.

Wilson Davhana - Dreams do come true …

Meet Mr Khathutshelo Wilson Davhana (49) from Dzanani township in Nzhelele.

He attended high school at Tswime Secondary School and later enrolled at Tshwane University of Technology in Pretoria.

“I have been working in the finance industry for 24 years, but that didn’t make me forget how I had I fallen in love with radio at the age of 14,” he said. “I remember while I was still a little boy growing up in Makungwi village I would listen to the radio the whole day.”

He used to work at Sekhukhune FM as a music compiler and in 2019 he started presenting at Nzhelele FM. “My dreams have come true to finally be in the media space. I love radio with all my heart.”

Art & Entertainment Timmy Blanks proves he’s a star

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho Timmy Blanks has proved through his talent and hard work that he is not an average artist but a full-fledged singer, producer, director, composer, instrumentalist and sound engineer.

A resident of Ha-Mandiwana village in Nzhelele, he was born Livhuwani Timothy Tshiguvhu into a very academic family, but he happened to be the one blessed with artistic capabilities. “My interest in music started at the age of 11 when I was the smallest bass player at a local church, whose pastor was also a guitarist and a singer,” he said. “He also was the one who taught me how to play acoustic guitar.”

He was more active as a singer in an R&B group, Soul Mates, at Mphephu High School in 2000.

He wanted to pursue a musical career via a music degree upon completing his Grade 12, but he was dissuaded that music could not be taken as a career.

“Then I decided that I must do music as a hobby and not a career,” he said. “I moved to stay with my elder sister in Thohoyandou, who was a lecturer in the University of Venda where I was doing bridging courses. By then I used to sneak into music classes in the music school with no registration … that was where I learned to play music by the book.”

He moved to Pretoria to pursue his studies in 2003 and that was the time when he met his

musician friends Abby Tshinada and Michael Manenzhe, who were working for a recording studio.

“In the company of Abby and Michael, I learned sound engineering at Faceoff Music Studies, owned by Prince Nyadzawela Mamphitha,” he said.

“I started working on my original material, which resulted in my first album, Dakalo.”

In 2008, he produced the controversial hit Marry Me by Ambani Bee Gee, and he also acted as a main character in the song's video.

He went on to produce artists such as Sandani Singo (gospel) and Talifhani Matshakatini (reggae). He has sung with Colbert Mukwevho and shared the stage with the late Oliver Mutukuzi, Lira, Thomas Chauke, and Tshepo Tshola.

Some of the songs are Mom and dad, Bad company, Lufuno lwa kale, Growing up, Arilindeli, Thambulo, Funi mali, My chocolate and Masindi. On the album he collaborated with local artists such as Ras Canly, Romeo, Meskay, Commando, Batondy, Fizzy, Zwonaka Yapie, TM-Matika, Monster, YB, and Facebreezy.

ra, Thora Thora Majiga hails from Thohoyandou. In 2014, Thora Thora started making his own music and he released his first album, Why, in 2015, which was followed by his EP, One foot in.

He drew inspiration from South African kwaito legends such as the late Brown Dash, Mandoza, and Zola, and he aspires to collaborate with almost all kwaito artists involved in making good kwaito music back in the 90s. In 2018, he collaborated with Batondy and released a single, My Chocolate, produced by Pat Mesh at Via records studio. The single was one of his biggest since the

beginning of his music career, including a successful music video of the song. It was directed by Romeo Maboko, shot in Johannesburg and released on YouTube in August 2018.

He has shared the stage with local artists such as Vigy M, Dupa AKA Masuvhelele, Khathu and Friends, which opened more doors of opportunities to his musical career.

Ras Willie awarded Best Traditional Artist Achievement Just two months after its release, Wilson Dzebu’s Tshivenda traditional reggae album, Vhulunga Zwau, surprised many when it scooped the 2019 Best Traditional Artist of the Year Award during the Front Seat Recognition Awards that were recently held at Thohoyandou Indoor Sports Centre.

The annual awards are the brainchild of well-known comedian Livhuwani Madadzhe.

Known as Ras Willie, Dzebu said it was also a surprise for him to have been nominated and then winning the award. “I know that the album is doing very well, but I did not expect it to win an award so soon. I was surprised by the huge support from music lovers, and many people told me that my music is unique because it is a new reggae beat that is deeply rooted in African culture and tradition.”

He said the fact that he was competing with some of the heavyweights in the music industry and came out tops was a clear indication that the future looked very bright. “Truly speaking, I never thought I would make it as some of

the nominees have big names and have been in the music industry for decades. I nearly froze when my name was called out to ascend the stage to take the award. This was indeed the greatest moment of my life.”

Ras Willie said nothing was more fulfilling than being honoured by his own people. “When it starts

here at home, there is hope that more is still to come soon. It would have been not fair for me if I first get an honour far away before I get a recognition from my own people.

If I die now, I will die a happy man because my people have given me the happiness that I will never forget until my last day on earth.”

Madadzhe said the main aim of the initiative was to uplift local artists and encourage them to take their art seriously. “We have many gifted artists, but they are being ignored by the so-called big institutions.

Our duty is to make sure that these artists are promoted and given the opportunity to shine through their God-given talents.”

Reaction on matric results The events coordinator of Phalaphala FM, Mr Lufuno Munonde, has wished the Grade 12 pupils who passed their examinations the best of luck for the future.

For those who failed, Munonde advised them to go back to school and to rectify their mistakes.

Munonde urged all the pupils in local schools to study hard from the first day of the new school year as it is up to an individual to make it or fail in life. He said the scholars should know what they wanted to be in life and should also take decisions that they would not regret later.

He said as the station was pleased with the commitment shown by pupils and teachers in different schools. He urged them to work extra hard in order to improve the results of the province. “It is up to you to make us proud. Only hard work will make you achieve the best in life,” he said.

He further said no muti could help any pupil to achieve better results. “Pupils and teachers had to sweat it out in order to reap the rewards at the end of the year,” he added.

Asked how he felt about schools that had not performed very well, those with a lower pass rate, Munonde said that the affected schools must address their challenges and problems, so that the department of education, together with the station, could assist them. “Work like a slave today and live like a master in future,” said Munonde.

He urged parents and teachers to give their children all the necessary support and make sure that they remained focused all the way.

“We must continue to help our children realise and comprehend the fact that education is the key to the prospects of South Africa.

The more educated we are, the brighter the future of the country is in going forward.

Through education we shall triumph against the challenges facing our country, such as unemployment, poverty and inequality.”

He congratulated teachers and pupils on their hard work and dedication throughout the year, adding that this was the time for all those who had worked hard to reap the benefits.

“Educators have a very challenging job, and despite the hardships that they come across year in and year out, they continue to do a sterling job.”

Musanda Vho-Tshinetise Tshedza Ravhura of Makonde village is only 17 years old and is in Grade 11 at Thengwe High School, but he said he would seek wisdom from God to rule his subjects diligently.

He said this immediately after officially assuming power to ascend to his throne during a high-profile event that was held at Makonde Musanda last week. Local villagers, traditional leaders, politicians, representatives of community structures and churches attended the occasion.

Vho-Tshedza was installed as Makonde village’s traditional leader by Thovhele Vho-Midiyavhathu Kennedy Tshivhase in 2014 when he was only 12 years old. Because he was still a minor, a regent and the royal council oversaw the village affairs.

After consultation with family members, agreement was reached that Vho-Tshedza was now old enough to ascend the throne. He takes over from his late father, Musanda Vho-Azwianewi David Mutshinyalo Ravhura, who passed away in 2012.

When handing over the baton to the

young man, Thovhele Tshivhase said as a young traditional leader, Vho-Tshedza should follow in the footsteps of his predecessors who had ruled their subjects with love and wisdom. “Starting from your great-grandfathers Vele La Mbeu, Tshisevhe, Malise, Masindi, and Tshinetise, to your late father, Azwianewi - all these people were great traditional leaders whose kingdoms were respected by everyone. We have no doubt that the royal blood in your veins will guide you to steer this ship in the right direction.”

Tshivhase urged the new traditional leader to take education seriously. “I’m happy that we are giving you the power to rule this land while you are still at school.

There are dangerous people on this earth who will take advantage of you if you are not educated. Nobody will take away your land because you will be able to read even the smallest print on an official document. When you are educated, you can wisely use your knowledge to bring development to your village.

We wish you well in your new role as a leader of the people of this village.”

Tshivhase ordered that all the stamps that were being used in the village prior to the big day be abolished. “I’m

handing over a new official stamp to Vho-Tshedza that will be used in all official correspondence of the village.

Anyone who is found using an old stamp will be subjected to the strongest legal disciplinary action. I will inform the municipality, banks, all departments and various stakeholders not to accept any stamp besides this one that I’m handing over now.” He said this to the applause of jubilant villagers.

When accepting his responsibility, Musanda Vho-Tshedza said he would not disappoint his family and subjects in his official duties. “As Vhavenda, we have the saying that shango la shaya thovhele ndi mulano (everybody does as he pleases in the area where there is no traditional leader). This is now coming to an end as I will be leading my village into a transformed area where everybody would like to stay and invest.

I will work closely with other traditional leaders, the royal family, community stakeholders, my royal council, the municipality, government departments and all other structures to bring development in my village while, at the same time, giving myself enough time to do my school work.”

Mukula Santos win Mphathele Soccer Tournament

By Silas Nduvheni On New Years’ Day, hundreds of people convened at the Mukula Santos soccer field at Mukula for the Mphathele Mukula Soccer Tournament.

One of the organizers of the tournament, Mr Rudzani Takalani, said the tournament had been founded in 2009 by the late Chief Nkhwathiseni Takalani in remembrance of the late Chief Joel Takalani Mphathele-Tshivhase.

The nine teams that participated in the tournament are based around Mukula village

and they are playing in different leagues under Thulamela and SAFA-Vhembe.

He said part of the tournament was to keep young people busy during the festive season and it could also serve to scout players with good soccer skills.

The event was also supported by ABSA Thohoyandou and Jackson City.

Mukula Santos were crowned the winners of Mphathele Mukula Soccer Tournament by beating Mukula Young Brothers 3-2 and they received a big trophy and R6 000.

Victory for Mpheni Mpheni Home Defenders scored a 1- 0 victory over the on-form Magau United in their MMK Administrator Stream E league match at Magau on Sunday.

Home Defenders’ coach, Mr Vhutshilo Phuravhathu, was full of praise for his players.

“Finally, we got it right. I think credit must go the players, because they fought back hard. We conceded four goals in the first round against United and this was sweet revenge,” said Phuravhathu.

“I hope the level of concentration will be high and we will keep on working hard. The only way we can do that is to keep everybody together, so that we can move forward,” he said.

Magau United’s coach, Mr Bishop Musiamo, said that no need existed for panic at this stage.

He said that their focus was on their next league clash on weekend. “We knew that we were going to lose at some time. I will only be worried if my players are not fighting,” Musiamo told Limpopo Mirror.

“Defenders are a strong side. We just need to prepare and forget about this defeat. To fight with the big boys, you need more than talent. It’s tough,” he said.

A South African Junior lightweight non-title fight was won by Rofhiwa “War Child” Maemu when he defeated Thembani Hobyane on points during the Royal Boxing Challenge held at the Sibasa 2Ten Hotel last Friday.

The third annual tournament was staged by Nzhelele Women Sports Promoters. Thovhele Vho-Gole Mphaphuli, who attend the tournament, said to the boxers that they should train hard to excel in the sport. He praised the promoter, Ms Mashudu Nekokwane, who came up with the idea of producing young boxers.

Ms Nekokwane, chairperson of the promoting body, said her aim was to develop rural young people, keep the youth off the streets and prevent them from abusing alcohol. “I saw huge talent around Vhembe and came up with the idea of developing boxers.”

Maemu said that although he was nervous at first, he enjoyed his career. “It also put my name in the spotlight, because I was unknown and a dwarf among the giants in the boxing fraternity.

I was frustrated when many boxing promoters’ businesses collapsed around the province.”

In the main supporting bout for the vacant provincial lightweight title, Tshifhiwa “Timer” Munyai lost to Prince Ndlovu on points.

This was evident when they secured a space for a local soccer star to participate in trials at Bidvest Wits Football Academy in Gauteng.

Rirothe Junior Manentjie (10), who was selected during Hollywoodbets' Masters Cup that was recently held at Mabaleng Sports Grounds, will go to Gauteng on Sunday and the trials will be held from next Monday (13th) to Friday.

Cena the new musangwe champ

By Kaizer Nengovhela Khodani “Cena” Nephalama was crowned as the new champion of the musangwe tournament after he beat Lufuno "Checkers" Gethe in the final of the Radzambo Cultural Foundation Musangwe tournament a fortnight ago.

More than 20 bouts took place during the tournament that was attended by many chiefs around Vhembe.

The sponsor of the tournament, Chief Livhuwani Matsila of Radzambo Cultural Foundation, pledged his undivided support for the sport. He stated that he was committed to preserving the Venda culture and felt bound to lend a helping hand to musangwe as it formed

part of the Venda culture.

The musangwe boss, Mr Tshilidzi “Poison” Ndevana, said they had decided to conduct weekly tournaments after realizing that people were still thirsty for more action after the festive musangwe tournament. "The tournament at Tshifudi Stadium thrilled people in such a way that they needed more action, even after it was declared closed. We then invited different stakeholders to a meeting where we agreed to start with the Saturday tournaments."

Ndevana further invites men who are interested in musangwe to come and join them.

"We are planning to make this sport a big event and we want everyone to participate. If we get sponsors in the future,

we will reward the fighters to strengthen their fighting spirit.

Maybe one day, the government will make this sport legal."

Nephalama said that he would not give up the sport because it was the one he enjoyed most. "Some say it is a primitive game, but I don’t agree with them, because it is like other games. It is meant to promote friendship, because we bear no grudges after the fight, even if one is defeated. This is the game of our forefathers and we will never stop following in their footsteps.”

Nephalama went home with R6 000 cash, while Gethe received R5 000. The two who lost in the semi-finals, Solo Munyai and Tshinandala Mukundamagwa, received R3 000 and R2 000 respectively.

TTM signs Masibusane Zongo

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila FC (TTM) have just signed the skilful SA midfielder, Masibusane Zongo.

TTM's president, Mr Masala Mulaudzi, hailed Zongo's signing as a great move that took place during the January transfer window. “Zongo is one of the most talented players in South Africa and one thing I like about the boy is that he is a crowd puller,” Mulaudzi said.

“His presence in the team will bring back our supporters to the stadium.”

A soccer star who grew up in Mthatha, Eastern Cape, Zongo was discovered in 2000 when he was 12 years old and was promoted to the SuperSport senior team in 2008.

“I would like to thank the president of

TTM, Mr Masala Mulaudzi, for believing in me,” Zongo said.

He added that he was ready to help the team win games and gain promotion. He urged TTM supporters to support the team and attend the matches.

“We cannot play well if they don’t come to the stadium and support us,” he said. “We need all the vibrant noises from our fans.”

Ndou, told Eyethu FM listeners in a radio interview that the team’s management was aware of Zongo’s lifestyle.

“Zongo’s off-the-field (behaviour) is no longer a major concern as he has taken a decision to take charge of his life,” Ndou said. “With our guidance, he will become the great player that he was a few years ago.

He has until the end of the 2019/20 season to regain his form.”

Berea FC lift the Vhanasi Tournament cup

Berea took home R12 000, a soccer kit, gold medals and a soccer ball. The runners-up, Gondeni Big Cat, received R6 000, a soccer kit, silver medals and a

soccer ball.

Sambandou United Professionals, who finished in the third spot, received R3 000, bronze medals and a soccer ball, while the fourth-placed side, Mavunde FC, went home with R15 00 and a soccer ball.

Mavunde lost 0-2 to Berea in the semi-final stage of the tournament earlier that day, while Sambandou were

beaten 3-4 by Gondeni Big Cat. Teams that were booted out in the quarter-final stage each received a soccer ball.

The individual awards were presented to Dakalo Ratshitanga (best player in the tournament), Pfariso Mukoma (top goal scorer) and Mr Rofhiwa Muligwe (best coach).
