Bespreek daardie vakansie of naweek-wegbreek,” sê hy.

Probeer iets skeppend of kreatief doen. As jou hande besig is, is jou kop stil.

Fibre has arrived - but how much of it do you need? By Anton van Zyl The past year saw a flurry of activities from Internet service providers, with a number of them digging trenches and installing a fibre network in Louis Trichardt. Three of the companies have activated their fibre networks and are offering packages to mostly home users. This, of course, means that consumers now have a choice, but making a decision may not be that easy. A fibre connection has many advantages, but it also brings along new terminology and consumers are expected to understand the difference between a 10Mbps and a 100Mbps connection, with aspects such as “latency”, “ping rate” and upload and download speed suddenly being important. But does a consumer really need to go for the top-of-the-range option? To try and assist with the choices, we “simplified” the matter. We set three home scenarios, starting with a small family and ending with a household that functions as a small office. We then asked an IT expert as well as the service providers what they would recommend for each of these households. The packages currently on offer vary between a 20/20Mbps line for around R400 to a 100/100Mbps (100Mbps upload and 100Mbps download) line for almost R1 000 per month. Certain providers charge extra for installation and a router, whereas others provide this free of charge. All the packages offer unlimited Internet usage, meaning the packages are not capped based on the volume of data uploaded or downloaded. (Unlimited is not, however, completely “unlimited”, as the service providers have what is called “fair-usage policies” that allow them to throttle or prioritise Internet traffic.)

set connected to the Internet, uses roughly 5Mbps. “If only one or two semi-heavy devices are used, 10Mbps will be just fine. If more than two heavy devices will be used, get a 20Mbps line,” he advises. Pietman Otto, owner/manager of Letaba Wireless, agrees and says that even with multiple users, a 20Mbps line would be totally adequate. The same response was received from Vuma, another of the service providers. “With the 20Mbps speed, families will have access to uncapped and affordable high-speed Internet,” says Bongiwe Nzuza of Tribeca, the PR company that Vuma uses.

In our second scenario, the children have grown up and are using the Internet a lot more. The teenage boy is a serious gamer, and he does not want any lag. His sister spends weekends binge watching the top Netflix series, while mom and dad watch the odd movie and enjoy Skyping with the grandparents.

A growing family The heavy hitters

The first scenario is a small family of four people. The children are still young, and mom and dad use their cellphones to access the Internet, mostly to communicate on social-media sites. They have a Netflix account, and the children enjoy streaming the cartoon channel.

A small family

Petrus Meiring, an IT specialist living in the United Kingdom, reckons that one of the most common mistakes that people make is to think that they need a high-capacity line. Meiring knows the Soutpansberg area very well, having grown up here. For the past decade, he has been living in the UK where he assists businesses and individuals as an IT consultant. He starts off by warning that speed is not the overriding factor when deciding on what option to take. “Latency or ping is what you look at and is perhaps 10 times more important,” he says. (More about that later). Meiring explains that a “heavy device”, such as a television

Letaba Wireless’s Pietman Otto reckons a 30 to 50Mbps connection would be better than a 20Mbps connection in the above scenario, “although you will very seldom use more than 20 to 30Mbps, let alone the full 50Mbps capacity”. “In my honest opinion I do not see most residential subscribers needing more than a 50Mbps connection. There are the exceptions, like gamers needing daily gaming updates (which are often large amounts of data) and customers uploading content to YouTube and TikTok that would benefit from a fast(er) connection. That is not to say that neither of those scenarios cannot work with a 50Mbps connection,” he explains. Meiring is even more conservative, saying that for most scenarios a 10/10Mbps connection will be fine. “It will definitely be fine if it is a 20/10 Mbps connection. Thus, it is obvious that more than 20Mbps is an overkill,” he says. Vuma recommends a 50Mbps connection, to be on the safe side. “It allows family members to binge watch their favourite shows, stream movies, and access the Internet simultaneously without having to worry about buffering and lost connections,” says Nzuza.

The heavy hitters The third scenario has the girl now being a full-time student doing online classes. Her brother has migrated and, apart from playing online games, he is also a “vlogger” (video blogger), regularly uploading videos to platforms such as YouTube and TikTok. As a result of the pandemic, mom and dad are working from home, making use of Zoom or Microsoft Teams to attend meetings. They also send and receive all documentation, which can often be quite big.

Vuma recommends a 100/100Mbps connection for these “heavy hitters”. “They can access HD-quality video chats with educators and tutors, download files of any size in a matter of seconds, and enjoy non-stop educational video streaming,” says Nzuza. Otto reckons even such a family does not necessarily need the top-of-the-range package. He provides an example of an overnight accommodation facility with a 100Mbps connection. In spite of a number of visitors linking in, the connection seldom averages more than 35Mbps. His second example is a school with a 200Mbps connection. “It is a private school with most teachers residing on campus and about 250+ boarders. Even with all those users constantly active, the connection occasionally breaches 100Mbps,” says Otto. Meiring agrees that even bigger families who use the Internet extensively may not need the more expensive and “faster” lines. He explains that numerous other factors affect the speed that connects users to the Internet.

Speed is the sum of many factors Meiring says that probably most cases when people complain about slow speeds, the problem lies within the local network of the user. “Ensure that all devices use healthy network cables,” he says. This means that good-quality cables (not wireless connections) must be used to connect television sets and personal computers, should speed be of the essence. The quality of the equipment used is also important. The router provided by the service provider may be sufficient but will not be comparable to a top-end router that costs 10 times more. “Any wireless connection will break your latency,” explains Meiring. Latency is the delay between a user’s action and a web application’s response to that action. In networking terms, this is often referred to as the total round-trip time that a data packet takes to travel. In a normal household, the main router may be linked to another wi-fi router (in another room). This router may not be configured correctly and quite a number of people may be linked to this router. If any part of the network is bad, that affects the other parts. Probably the most important decision to make, however, concerns the service provider. Residents in Louis Trichardt currently have a choice between three companies, with some others soon to follow. Meiring says that even though a fibre connection is a huge improvement on, for example a DSL connection, residents must do their homework before signing contracts.

Wyle tannie Lettie Mostert (93). Foto verskaf.

Hierna hou sy skool by Laerskool Louis Trichardt en daarna by Hoërskool Louis Trichardt. “Sy was ‘n regte grapjas.

“Sy was vir almal ‘n inspirasie as dit by geloof kom. Rus sag in jou volmaakte, pynlose staat, Lettie!”

Irene. Adendorff en ‘n jarelange vriendin en kollega, me. Sussa Ehlers. Foto verskaf.

The directors and members of the Makhado Care Group in Louis Trichardt have reason to smile as they received an extremely welcome donation of R110 000 from the Rotary Club of Louis Trichardt on Friday, 27 August. Receiving the donation on behalf of the care group was Dr Casper Venter. Venter said that they were truly grateful for the community’s support, without which they would not have been able to do their work. photo-Novel competition Lungani’s trouble with Time.

*sigh* Another day and another physics lesson. Mr Mafela is teaching the concept of “Time” and well here’s how it went. LIES!

a story by:

So guys as we all know time moves at a constant rate…

nyandano Ramushweu

Featuring Ridgeway College matric group.

ok, Why do you believe this concept is untrue Lungani?

There are some situations where time acts funny sir, I can give you one…no two! Examples where time moves differently.

First Example: And I’m sure I’m not the only one who has experienced this.

alarm rings

Ok Lungani give us those two examples. 06:50 That means I have 10 more minutes of sleep.

Example 2: EVERY, and I mean EVERY student, will relate to this.

how is this possible!

8:30

Wow! This maths lesson is taking ages to end. Its 10:30, The lesson ends at 11:00

*Wakes up moments later*

A 10 minute nap wouldn’t hurt.

How is this even possible? it’s 10:20

Nyandano knows how to entertain Our photo-novel competition is quickly heading towards an end, with only two more editions to go. The last few weeks saw a flurry of entries and it was absolutely amazing to see what our local creative geniuses came up with. This weeks’ winner is Nyandano Ramushweu, a young man with such an abundance of talent that it is almost scary. This matriculant from Ridgeway College knows how to entertain and he clearly has an excellent sense of humour. We again received some entries that break away from humour and the stories address

problematic issues in society, such as domestic violence and even ritual murders. It is encouraging to see that our young readers are not shying away from such issues and are willing to address these through story telling. Whether the audience is always ready for this creative freedom, is another question. Be as it may, please send in the stories. Remember that the judges will take into consideration the market that the series is aimed at. The aim is not to drive controversy, but to entertain. Avoid topics such as religion and

politics (and lately even whether to vaccinate or not to vaccinate)

How to enter All you need to enter is an interesting story that must be told within the limitations of 12 photos. You can use a cellphone to take the photos or an expensive camera, it doesn’t matter. Use your own actors, but remember to get their permission. The photos will be used in black-and-white, so take that in consideration (get a decent contrast). Send your 12 photos, along with the

Entries not used simply stand over to the next week, where it will again compete against the other unpublished photo-novels (and the team’s contribution). This means that the sooner you enter your photo-novel, the better chance it has to be used. After the final date (24 September 2021), we will choose an overall winner. The overall winner will win an additional R1 000. The competition is open to all residents of the Vhembe district. Entry forms can be downloaded from the Zoutpansberger’s website: www. zoutpansberger.co.za/comic

Support for Farmer’s Market and Mutt Mile overwhelming Animal Welfare

The SPCA Louis Trichardt’s fifth annual Mutt Mile on Saturday attracted a record number of entries, totalling just more than 80. Photo supplied.

“What a way to kick off spring!” remarked members of the SPCA Louis Trichardt, following an impressive turn-out for their fifth annual Mutt Mile, which coincided with their Spring Farmer’s Market on Saturday, 4 September. “It was our BIGGEST Mutt Mile and Farmer’s Market to date! What incredible support from our community, and we’re quite sure everyone enjoyed it as much as we did!” said the SPCA’s Alicia Thomas. According to Alicia, they had more than 80 entries for this year’s race and they soon realized that they did not have enough medals. They were, however, able to get more medals made in record time and delivered before the runners crossed the finish line. Alicia thanked each and every person who

supported their farmer’s market, as well as everyone who had booked a stall. “There was some stunning goods, gorgeous plants and delicious food for sale and I’m sure no one was disappointed with their purchases. Make sure you don’t miss our next farmer’s market on 2 October,” said Alicia. The winners of the Mutt Mile were Armand Roets (1st junior 5km), Thys Badenhorst (1st senior 5km), Anika Badenhorst and dog Jakie (1st in the Mutt Mile), Elouise Krügel and Blue (best dressed award) and Lynette Ramolepo (determination award) Alicia thanked all their sponsors and volunteers who helped make the day a success. “We truly appreciate your continued support!” said Alicia. Those wishing to book a stall for the next farmer’s market can do so by phoning Alicia at Tel 084 900 5332.

Apart from the biggest ever turn-out for the Mutt Mile, the SPCA Louis Trichardt’s Spring Farmer’s Market was also one of the biggest ever. Their next market will take place on Saturday, 2 October. Photo supplied.

- Ds. The Siluan Warning Signs for childhood cancer were adopted by the South African Children’s Cancer Study Group and the national Department of Health to promote the early detection and treatment of cancer. We encourage the community to be a voice of hope this September and collaborate with healthcare workers, non-profit organisations, and the Department of Health to spread the Siluan Warning Signs for early cancer diagnosis. Many children in low- and middle-income countries have poor access to hospitals, which in turn lack essential diagnostic tests, experience a shortage of nursing medical and surgical personnel, inadequate and erratic supply of basic pharmaceutical and chemotherapeutic agents, and an absence of radiotherapy, surgical and intensive-care facilities. These are but some of the factors that contribute to patients’ presenting with advanced disease and resultant poorer outcomes. As neonatal, infant and child health improves in South Africa, communicable diseases, such as respiratory and diarrhoeal diseases, HIV-AIDS, and tuberculosis, are better controlled. It is imperative to focus on non-communicable diseases such as childhood cancer and identify these diseases early, have access to the correct diagnostics and therapeutics and ensure the availability of supportive care to improve overall survival of our children with cancer. The burden of the SARS-CoV-2 is further testing our fragile African healthcare systems. Many caregivers are unemployed due to national lockdowns, there are inadequate transport systems, and caregivers are afraid to venture out of the safety of their homes to seek healthcare as the ever-present danger of contracting Covid-19 lurks. Sadly, we may experience even further delays in the diagnosis of childhood cancer. We should endeavour to ensure children with cancer do not face further delays in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer during the global SARS-

Gold September is an annual campaign worldwide to raise awareness of childhood cancer. There are many advances in paediatric oncology, yet cancer remains a leading cause of mortality in children. It is imperative that children are diagnosed early for effec-

tive treatment of early-stage disease, which will translate into favourable outcomes and improved overall survival. Many factors are responsible for delays in childhood cancer, including the child’s age, family’s socioeconomic status, parental educational level, distance of residence from the hospital, cancer type, site, and stage.

A proud moment for residents of Louis Trichardt and surrounds as Paralympic bronze medallist Sheryl James made her way into Louis Trichardt on Sunday. I would not have had the opportunity to run and win a medal. A great thank you to them for sticking it out with me!” said Sheryl shortly after touching down at OR Tambo Airport on Saturday morning. Scores of residents and cars lined the N1 on Sunday afternoon as Sheryl arrived back in Louis Trichardt amidst sheers of jubilation and the deafening sound of car horns being sounded while the South African flag was proudly waved. Even Makhado Mayor Samuel Munyai was there to congratulate Sheryl on behalf of the municipality and

its people. Following Sunday’s welcome-back event, Sheryl expressed her extreme gratitude towards all who attended. “Thank you seems inadequate! Louis Trichardt made my welcome home simply unforgettable. I am deeply humbled and very proud to be a Limpopian and an even prouder Louis Trichardter. The local newspaper seems the fitting platform to say thank you because I don’t have everyone’s names … there were so many arrangements and logistics that took place ... the energy was electric. Everyone may believe that I have inspired them, but I find my inspiration in every person from my hometown. So, thank you ever so deeply,” said Sheryl. She added that she looked forward to whatever came next, so that the community could grow together. “I have come to understand how even the most seemingly insignificant act of kindness can change a life forever, and this is priceless.

I believe that the people of Louis Trichardt are doing that every day,” said Sheryl. The organisers of the event also expressed their gratitude towards all who had made Sunday’s event possible, including Dawn Smit (car), Francé Krügel (car), Luke Enslin from Spar (flowers), Hilder from Spur (voucher), Hazel Leach (flags), Surat (flags), Premjee (water), Oasis Water (water), Mac & Rae Photography, Dirk from Innovated Designs (banner), Brig Gen Mathebula of AFB Makhado (PA system), Herman van Rensburg of AA Hobbies (drone), Werner Esterhuizen of Spotless Cleaning Services (drone), Capt Vele of the Makhado SAPS, Makhado municipal spokesperson Louis Bobodi and his team, Mayor Samuel Munyai, the Limpopo Traffic Department and Mr Avhatakali Themeli, the Vhembe District Municipality deputy manager for sport and recreation. Sheryl proudly displays her bronze medal, one of seven medals won by the 34-member South African Paralympic team. South Africa finished 34th overall in the medal standings of the Tokyo Summer Paralympic Games. Photo supplied.

Sheryl clenches her tongue between her teeth, something that has become somewhat of a trademark for her, as she waves to the crowd. She is not shy to give all glory for her achievements to the Lord.
