Another person who vehemently defended Mudau’s reputation was family spokesperson and businessman Mr Masala Mulaudzi. He said this week that he was one of the last people to be with Mudau, whom he described as a humble and God-fearing person who did not have enemies.

Mulaudzi said that Mudau was also a generous person who helped

many, including disadvantaged university students. He also condemned the rumours that Mudau’s death was a hit. “I am one of the people who went to the scene with the police ,and I can confirm the accident did happen. My appeal to the nation is for them to respect the family during this dark hour by not spreading these malicious and false rumours,” he said.

Mulaudzi said that the life of their brother was ended by a motor accident. “As the family we have accepted his death and we are not mourning, but celebrating his life as he requested while he was still alive,” Mulaudzi said.

The ZPH received permission for the expansion early in 2020 from the Limpopo Department of Health. Monday’s sod-turning ceremony thus hails the dawn of a new era for the hospital. The initial bulk groundworks are scheduled to be completed withing the next six weeks, after which the construction phase will begin. The proposed date for completion is November 2023 if no setbacks are experienced.

“What made these cruel men kill my brother”

By Kaizer Nengovhela Residents staying in the Tshakhuma-Tshiswiswini area went on the rampage last week, shortly after the death of a 62-year-old man, Mr Ndwakhulu Mukomafhedzi.

They believed that he had been ritually murdered. On Thursday (3 March) residents closed off the road to Punda Maria in protest against what they believe to be a spate of murders.

The body of Mr Mukomafhedzi was found in his house on Saturday, 27 February. From what could be established he was alone at home when an unknown assailant(s) gained entry by forcing the door open. His body was only found the next morning when relatives and friends started to get worried.

Mukomafhedzi did not answer calls and his neighbours and family members went to investigate.

The deceased’s sister, Ms Florah Mukomafhedzi, said she used to call him to find out how he was

keeping. “The way he was killed was absolutely barbaric. We never thought his life would end this way,” she said. Florah said she called him on the night of 25 February after he had visited his brother and he told her that he had arrived at home safely. When he was found, he was bleeding from his nose and his head, after presumably being stabbed.

Florah said that the family would not rest until justice was served.

“I’m asking myself a lot of questions. What did my younger brother do to these cruel men that made them kill him? I wish they can be arrested, so that they can answer those questions. I want justice for my brother,” she said.

After community members went on the rampage last Thursday, a group of residents, accompanied

by Sanco members, went to the hospital to get the post-mortem results. They were told that this had not been a ritual murder. The community members also suspect-

ed that the Zimbabwean citizen who was staying with the deceased might know something about the murder. The man was allegedly assaulted and had to be rescued by the police. The police vehicle was damaged in the process.

Several high-profile personalities sent condolences to the family, after hearing about the accident. Messages were also posted on social media. Celebrity choreographer and business personality, Somizi Somgaga Mhlongo, said Mudau had an everlasting impact on him.

The two met by chance when Mhlongo was passing from a gig in Thohoyandou and was attracted by the camouflage colours of his house and cars that were parked outside the

mansion.

Prominent businessman Lwams Nelwamondo also posted on his Facebook page: “I am glad I had an opportunity to interact with him on a personal level. He was actually a good person when you get to know him. He was the reason we have [a] low crime rate around Venda. He always advocated for peace,” he said.

A memorial service in his honour will be held at Tshakhuma on Friday and he will be laid to rest at the local Tshakhuma cemetery on Saturday.

Mawela’s future in hands of commission

By Silas Nduvheni The fate of the mayor of Musina Municipality, Nkhanedzeni Godfrey Mawela, lies in the hands of the ANC’s provincial integrity commission and the party’s national working committee. These bodies must decide whether or not the mayor must step down after his arrest and subsequent court appearances on charges of assault.

The ANC’s secretary in the Vhembe region, Rudzani Ludere, said that they had met with the Musina mayor and advised him to approach the integrity commission to be guided as to what was expected from him, in line with the party’s step-aside policy. Mawela was charged with assaulting Carris Munzhelele (25) during a drinking spree at a local tavern in Muswodi-Dipeni village on 26 February this year. Both Mawela and Munzhelele are residents of Muswodi-Dipeni village, just outside Musina.

“We call on members and leaders of the ANC alike to exercise restriction at all times, even in the face of provocation, as acting outside the parameters of the law has undesirable disciplinary consequences,” Ludere said.

The Musina mayor responded this week and said that this was by far the most difficult

period in his political career. Mawela said that he was still strong, because of people’s prayers, words of comfort and undivided support. “With the communities in Musina, let’s continue moving forward in our quest to bring a better life for all people,” said Mawela.

Mawela’s court case was postponed to 29 April for further police investigation and to a allow him to get a legal representative of his choice.

By Kaizer Nengovhela Like many other young women, Washu Hlabioa of Thohoyandou has been dreaming of making a big impact in the world of beauty since she was a little girl. Her dream already seems to start paying dividends at the tender age of 16 as she wins one beauty pageant after another.

Washu is a Grade 11 pupil at PEMPS College in Polokwane. She has already taken part in 30 different beauty pageants and has won more than 20 of them. Her star truly shines brightly, for she is to represent Limpopo at the finals of the Miss Teen Universe South Africa 2022 that takes place on Satur-

day, 12 March, in Durban.

“The reason why I entered the pageant is because I want to bring change and spread positivity by being the first girl from this area to win this competition. This will bring change to the Miss Limpopo brand by expanding their resources to the rural communities, and I will continue to spread diversity and unity in Limpopo Province,” said Washu.

As a finalist, Washu also wants to focus specifically on the youth and people living with disabilities. “I told myself to put in the extra effort and be dedicated, so that I could also be selected as a finalist and make my village proud,” she said. “It feels amazing, exciting, and

In the event of dispute in profits, the parties have been ordered to approach the Special Tribunal for an appropriate order on supplemented papers as necessitated by the circumstances.

Judge Lebogang Modiba ruled that applying the no-profit-and-no-loss principle in the

matter was just and equitable.

Regrettably, the biggest loser is the State and the public, she said. “They have been deprived of the variety of public, social and economic benefits that flow from a solid border track at the Beitbridge border and are saddled with a deficient border fence. Elim Hospital’s eye facility will not be moving, says Health MEC

By Thembi Siaga Rumours that the Department of Health is planning to move one of Elim Hospital’s key facilities to the Tshilidzini District Hospital have caused anger and uncertainty among residents and community leaders from Elim and the surrounding areas. Although the department has denied these allegations, residents do not seem convinced about their intentions.

Employees at Elim Hospital with inside information apparently informed former nurses and community leaders that the hospital’s ophthalmology department has not been included in the renovation plans at Elim Hospital. This news spread quickly, and the tribal office immediately summoned the hospital management to their office to discuss the hospital’s plans. A meeting was scheduled for 17:00 on Friday, 4 March, at Elim Hlanganani in Waterval.

Shortly before this meeting, however, the Department of Health issued a statement in which it assured residents that it had no intention of removing any services at Elim Hospital, but residents remained unconvinced and insisted that the meeting take

place.

Elim Hospital is one of the oldest health facilities in Limpopo. The headman of Elim Mabobo village, Nelson Mabobo, explained that the issue was brought to their attention by concerned workers and members of the community.

“We summoned the CLO and CEO of the hospital to the tribal office. They confirmed that members from the provincial and national Department of Health had showed them the new renovation plans for the hospital, which did not include an eye clinic,” he said.

“They told us that it was excluded from the renovation plans because it was more suitable for Tshilidzini District Hospital in Thohoyandou. So, we decided to write to the Department of Health to plead with to them to include the eye clinic,” he said.

A former employee at Elim Hospital, Dr Rachel Tlakula, said that she was concerned about the department’s plans to remove this facility. “It didn’t sit well with me and the community when we heard about their intentions,” she said. Dr Tlakula felt that the communities had not been consulted before the renovation plans for the hospital had been drawn.

“Our communities should have been involved somehow and that worries us. We don’t trust the department’s claims that these are only rumours, because they might not know about it, but the whole community is aware of this issue,” she said.

Local resident Gift Mukhari also voiced his concerns around the new renovation plans. He said that no smoke existed without a fire somewhere, and he strongly believed that removing the eye clinic would leave residents lacking. “Residents from villages like Mashamba, Muwaweni, and many others will be forced to travel to Tshilidzini Hospital if this happens. This fight against the removal of the eye clinic is for the whole community,” he said.

Meanwhile, the chairperson of the traditional council, Vicky Muvhali, said that the council would arrange another meeting with the provincial and district management to resolve the problem. “The removal of the eye department is still only a rumour, as we never got to see these new plans. However, we are planning to call the management for a meeting again to get clarity on it,” he said.

She assured them that the clinic would continue to serve them as it had always done.

“We have recently procured ophthalmology equipment to strengthen eye-care services there. This past weekend, we have operated on more than 100 cataracts in partnership with the private sector through this MEC’s initiative project.

We have expanded specialised services to weekly visits by an orthopaedic and a general surgeon, because to us, indeed, rural health matters and rural people deserve specialists’ services too.”

Since the first articles on dodgy NLC projects appeared in November 2017, the NLC has lambasted GroundUp and Limpopo Mirror, describing their articles as “unbalanced”, “slanted and biased” and “littered with halftruths and supposition”. The NLC also resorted to personal attacks on the journalists involved.

The SIU’s report to Parliament, however, has vindicated our reporting and proven that our shining a light on the nefarious deeds of what appears to be an organised crime syndicate operating with the assistance of senior NLC officials has finally borne fruit.

Let us build an old-age home The idea to build an old-age home in a remote Limpopo village appears to have originated around 2016. This was a year after an amendment to the Lotteries Act that allowed the NLC to not necessarily wait for applications from organisations that wanted to change the world for the better, but to be proactive instead. It allowed the minister or the NLC, in consultation with its board, to identify worthy projects to fund.

In 2017, the NLC embarked on several infrastructure projects, which included six old-age homes, including the one at Maila village. Why this decision was taken to build old-age homes in areas where such a concept is totally alien, has never been explained. The NLC’s first challenge was to find a suitable NPO to drive the project. For the Maila village project, a Soshanguve-based co-operative society (co-op), Mushumo Ushavha Zwanda (Mushumo), was handpicked.

This was the first of many strange decisions that the NLC has refused to explain. Mushumo was clearly dormant and non-compliant in its statutory reporting to the Department of Social Development when the NLC paid the first tranche of R20 million into its account in October 2017.

Mushumo was registered as an NPO on 18 May 2004. In October 2011, the entity was also registered as a co-op, with nine founding members

and three directors, namely Nomsa Maria Mathebula, Musandiwa Leonard Sidimela and Elizabeth Nenselwa Sono. The records of the Company and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) show that no activity has taken place since 2011. No annual reports have been filed and no change in directorship was recorded. How the entity managed to submit two years’ annual financial statements to the NLC, which is a prerequisite for receiving such a large grant, is a mystery.

Apart from the lack of activity, the NPO also did not have an unblemished record. A few years earlier, in 2013, Mushumo received a $50 000 grant from the United Nations Development Fund’s Small Grants Programme (SGP) for a waste-management project. The project was terminated after less than a year, following a site visit by the UNDP representatives. By then, the NPO had already received $45 000 (R458 550), according to the SGP’s national coordinator, Ms Anele Moyo. “[The project] was unfortunately terminated in Nov 2014 due to theft of equipment purchased to ensure successful implementation of the project and abandonment of project activities by the team,” she said.

Nevhutanda is well-known in the Vhembe District and was a lecturer at Makhado College of Education up until 1998. He received a PhD in education from Unisa in 2000 and a doctorate in music in 2005. He also claims a somewhat controversial professorship awarded to him by the International Eco-energy Academy of Azerbaijan and refers to himself as “Professor” Alfred Nevhutanda.

Among the many boards Nevhutanda serves on and directorships he holds, is Luonde Media Resource Centre. Luonde used to be the holding company of the broadcasting licence for the community radio station Makhado FM. This licence expired in 2018 and Luonde Media is listed as being deregistered. Who now owns the licence for Makhado FM is not clear. Icasa did not respond to questions seeking clarity.

Questions were sent to Nevhutanda by GroundUp, asking him why a beneficiary needed to pay R4 million into an account used to pay for the property. He did not respond.

Here is R4 million for you …

One would expect that, before embarking on a multimillion-rand project using public funds, proper research would be done and all stakeholders consulted. This was clearly not the case with the Maila village old-age home.

One person who believes that the correct procedures were not followed is the local traditional leader, Vhamusanda David Nthabalala. In an interview last week, he said that the people who drove the project had negotiated with the wrong traditional leader.

Nthabalala is the senior headman, or vhamusanda, for that section of Maila village. He never gave permission for the land in question to be used for the project and he says neither did the traditional council that oversees such matters.

“We had plans to fence off the place and seek funding from some provincial and national departments, so that we could build a chicken coop and buy chicken food and medicine,” he said. They had also planned to purchase some cattle. One of the people involved in their initial planning was the then Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Ms Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya.

Nthabalala said that the Gauteng people had offered to build a state-of-the-art old-age home that would benefit the local aged. “We had no idea or plan for an old-age home, but we listened to them and thought that they had something new and that it was worth trying, so long as it benefited our people.”

Although the traditional leaders may disagree as to who has jurisdiction over the site, both agree that they would not have opted for an old-age home. And that the local traditional structures had not been involved in the decision-making process and had little to no control over the project.

Who hijacked whom?

The SIU believes that Mushumo was hijacked and used - with the assistance of officials within the NLC - to siphon off millions in NLC funding.

To understand how this would work, one first needs to understand the type of funding that was approved. The grant was allocated under the proactive funding system of the NLC. This means that the project was initiated by the NLC. The concept was approved by the senior NLC officials and then a suitable NPO needed to be identified to drive the project.

One would expect that the NLC would do proper vetting and look for experienced organisations that have an established track record of managing tens of millions of rands in funding. The least one might expect would be that a local NPO with a good knowledge of the area would be selected. This, however, is not the case, and almost all the proactively funded projects during that period were handed to dodgy or hijacked NPOs. Most of these projects are currently under investigation.

When Limpopo Mirror first enquired about the Maila village project, the NLC’s spokesperson, Ndivhuho Mafela, did not want to provide names or contact details of the NPO’s representatives.

However, Limpopo Mirror managed to track down one of the listed directors, Leonard Sidimela.

His name appears in the SGP-funded project that was abandoned in

2014. When questions were sent to him in January 2021, he initially referred all queries to the NLC. When he was pressed to answer and provide clarity to the community, he appeared to have no knowledge of irregularities. “Which irregularities?” he asked, adding that the reporter should “explain that fraud you are talking about to me in writing”.

Sidimela even went as far as accusing the reporter of wanting to write “a front-page, juicy story about that project” and said that “you are being fed lies and you want to be an amplifier of those lies. I will suggest that you relax, we will call you and the people of Limpopo once we have completed and celebrate together,” he said.

The SIU report, however, suggests that Mr Sidimela either has an extremely bad memory, or he has been lying to the “people of Limpopo”. The SIU report also suggests that the NLC’s spokesperson, Mafela, had been very selective with the truth when he responded in January 2021, saying that the delay in finishing the project was “caused by contractual matters between the funded NPO and its contractors”.

In January 2021, the NLC and Sidimela must have been aware of the fraud but were not disclosing this to the community directly affected by the loss. Instead of opening a criminal case against the fraudsters, the NLC arranged for a meeting to “try and resolve the issues amicably”, the SIU told Parliament. The NLC then continued to dump more money into the project.

Where did the money go?

The R16 million that remained after R4 million was paid into the Vhutanda Investment account was most likely channelled to other parties. One of the companies involved with constructing the old-age home was Upbrand Properties. This company is closely linked with Phillemon Letwaba, the chief operating officer of the NLC. At the time, his brother, Johannes Letwaba, was in charge.

When Leonard Sidimela was asked about the involvement of Upbrand in 2021, he denied this.

“Again the company that we have appointed is MT Civils, the one you are talking about we know nothing about,” he said.

Sidimela’s denial could be because he was never told what was really happening, or because he was simply lying. In all the correspondence with him, the NLC was included, which means that they chose not to disclose the real facts to the community.

DJ Euphoria among top 10 female DJs

By Maanda Bele Over the years, the Vhembe region’s artists have shown time and again that they do not have to stand back in terms of talent – especially in the music industry. Some of its best artists come from deep rural villages, such as Gundo Netshia, better known as DJ Euphoria, who hails from Ha-khakhu Makuleni, in the far northern parts of Nzhelele.

The 26-year-old is a multi-talented musician, making a career for herself as technical producer (sound engineer), professional club DJ, and self-taught graphic designer.

DJ Euphoria has just been selected as one of the top 10 finalist in the Smirnoff 1818 Shaya Ingoma Top 10 Female DJ Search. The nationwide contest, which commenced in October 2021, is designed to unearth, promote, and offer multiple opportunities for up-and-coming female DJs in Mzansi, where they can showcase their skills, get the recognition they deserve and receive sufficient support in the pur-

The winner will be announced on 12 March 2022 at Nsimbini Lifestyle in Umlazi, KwaZulu-Natal. Today she enjoys her career as a DJ, despite its being male dominated. “I grew up playing in ‘male-dominated’ space. In primary school, I was the first girl to ever dance the Tshikona dance, and till today girls are still participating in this dance.

“We have seen so many successful female DJs in the industry, and that is inspirational. Of course, most of us do need the opportunity to really make it and the Smirnoff 1818 Shaya Ingoma Top 10 Female DJ Search platform affords us that opportunity,” she said.

“Jantiby” Nefale wins Presenter Andrew M to release two new albums at once of the Year award

For a musician to record more than one album at the same time may sound like biting off more than he can chew, but local gospel singer Andrew Makuya, or Andrew M as he is known, is doing just that.

The prolific artist from Hamakuya Fandani, outside Thohoyandou, is simultaneously working on two new albums, each with 12 tracks and both to be released in April this year. The albums, titled Nndededze and Ndi tshidziwe respectively, are at an advanced stage of production and Andrew M strongly believes that they

will be received well by gospel lovers.

Andrew M is not a novice in the gospel music fraternity, having released three previous albums, namely Fulufhelo langa (2014), Jesu wanga (2016), and Ndi ene (2018). “Judged by the success of my previous albums, I have no doubt that my latest two albums will do well too. It has taken me two years to prepare, as I allowed myself enough time to work on them. I just know that the music it contains will appeal to my audience,” he said.

To whet his fans’ appetite, Andrew M has released two singles (the title tracks from

each album) and he reckons that they are doing very well so far. “I’m happy that they are performing well in the market. I have done some interviews at different radio stations in promoting the songs, and it satisfies my soul that they are being played on air on a regular basis. I’m taking it as a sign that the two full albums will perform beyond expectation.

People love my music. My fans are already pressuring me into releasing the albums, but I need to wait for the right time to do so.”

Andrew M started his musical career in a church choir when he was still a little boy, leading the choral songs. He

was inspired by the music of Rapson Rambuwani who, according to him, was anointed by the Holy Spirit. He has also worked with seasoned gospel artists such as Lufuno Dagada and Newie Nthabalala.

When he is not making music, he enjoys photography, videography, and graphic design.

Mundalamo releases new album

The award-winning Tshivenda musician, Marcus Mundalamo, has released his sixth album, called Corona 2022.

The 10-track album was released earlier this year and features songs such as Vho-Khotsimunene, Khombo, and Hanga ponyi, which he hopes will entertain and inspire his fans.

The title track, Corona 2022, carries a significant message. “I want the people involved in stealing the money that is meant to help those who

have been suffering because of the Covid-19 pandemic to be arrested and charged for their crimes,” he said.

The song Khombo warns young people to stay away from gangsters who abuse drugs and alcohol as it only damages one’s future.

Mundalamo (57), who was born and raised in the rural village of Tshififi, just outside Thohoyandou, says he was inspired by his late father, Nthambeleni Mundalamo, who was both a composer and a guitarist.

“I used to hold my father’s guitar and pretend to be playing. I practised using old five-litre oil cans then,” he recalled.

He released his first album, Ndala ya Mashona, in 1999 but says it was not promoted well. He was spotted by PhalaPhala FM in 2005, who chose him to sing and dance at their roadshows, as well as on their Pick A Box show (called Tshibulebule in Tshivenda).

In 2010, Mundalamo was lured

by Robert Mphephu, a businessman from the Thohoyandou area who owns NW Audiovisuals Centre, and he was finally able to share stages, sing and play guitar with the likes of well-known singers such as Ringo Majingosi, the Devera Ngwenya Jazz Band and Michael Jambo, to name but a few.

“I participated in different music categories organised by the South African Traditional Music Awards (SATMA) and won the Best Song of the Year award at the Tshivenda Music Awards (TSHIMA) in 2014, with a song called Vhudabadaba, which is from my Vhudabadaba album,” he said.

The well-known veteran Phalaphala FM presenter, Mpho “Jantiby” Nefale, made the Vhembe District proud when he was selected as Limpopo Presenter of the Year during the Limpopo Sports & Arts Awards held at Meropa Casino in Polokwane on 26 February this year.

He went home with R20 000 and a trophy.

Nefale made his official entrance into the radio industry at Radio Venda in 1984 and his programme, Devhula Ha Vhembe, started in 1985. He worked at the station with the likes of Razz Matazz Mashige, Pastor Isaac Dagada, Andries Mueda, GJ Sadiki, TJ Munonde, Eric Ligudu, and Makonde Mbedzi, to mention but a few.

His appetite for information, taste for good music, love for his listeners and zeal to tell it the way it is, placed this announcer among the best in the business. “I am the kind of person who is positive about every aspect of life.

There are many things I like to do, to see, and to experience,” he said.

Being an introvert, he was naturally drawn to creative writing to express his thoughts and perspectives, rather than to express them verbally. Radio, however, gave him the confidence, as well as a wide platform to express his ideas, until it became his dream to assert himself as a key player in the media industry.

The one important thing he has learnt in radio journalism, is “that you must always be prepared to learn a thing or two in your interaction with the public”. This is also true of his character, as he is an informer, entertainer and educator, but most of all the voice that accompanies listeners. Nefale ascribes his success and achievements to hard work, and he constantly strives for the best in a career that demands a lot of discipline and determination.

His listeners are very important to him, and he wishes to thank them from the bottom of his heart for their continued support.

On behalf of the team, Phalaphala FM’s programme manager, Ms Sharon Ravele, congratulated him on his achievement and said that the station was mighty proud of him. She described Nefale as a result-driven individual and professional radio man. Out of all the presenters, Nefale has been working at Phalaphala FM the longest. He presents the Devhula-Ha Vhembe show on Saturdays from 19:00 to 21:00.

This prompted the community to close all the roads leading to the villages while they sought an ear from the municipality. “We have decided to give them a hard time by closing the main road to the area. By Frank Mavhungu Black Leopards again failed to impress their home crowd when they played to a goalless draw with Hungry Lions in their GladAfrica Championship League match at the Thohoyandou Stadium on Saturday.

The game was characterised by wasted scoring opportunities. The visitors from the Northern Cape squandered three clear chances within the first 15 minutes of the game. In the first instance, their overlapping midfielder, Daniel Moredi, forced his way through the defence of Leopards and hesitated for far too long to unleash from within the box. He finally lost possession.

His teammate, Eric Mabaso, had his chance in the eighth minute. Unlike Moredi, who seemed to be hypnotised at the goal finish, Mabaso tried his luck with a close-range ground cutter. The ball hit the side net for a goal kick.

Black Leopards gained momentum with time. Their centre forward, Maboke Matlakala, could not believe his eyes in the 25th minute. He unleashed a half volley from the edge of the box. The ball went a little wide, much to the fans’ disappointment.

The referee, Mr Siyabulela Qunta, flashed the only yellow card in the 39th minute. Leopards’ left back, Tsheamo Mashoene, obstructed James Rangata and Qunta was quick to flash yellow.

Moraka hosted the department’s annual Sports Awards, held at Meropa Casino in Polokwane on Saturday, 26 February.

“Limpopo has been producing some of the best athletes in the various sporting codes for the country; however, they hardly ever ply their trade at home,” she said. Moraka applauded the Limpopo sports fraternity for their continued efforts to achieve great results on and off the field of play, despite the adverse impact of Covid-19.

sports personalities, representing different sporting codes and recreation fields in 29 categories, were honoured for their contribution in keeping the sector alive under difficult conditions.

Among some of the top achievers who walked away with honours was Sheryl James, who returned from the 2020 Summer Paralympic Games in Tokyo with a bronze medal in August 2021. She won the Sportswoman of the Year with a disability award, while Vhumbanani Masakona of Rabali won the Sportsman of the Year award with a disability prize. They both walked away with trophies and cheques of R20 000 each. The Presenter of the Year award went to veteran and well-known Phalaphala FM presenter Mpho “Jantiby” Nefale. Ablex United proved all their critics wrong when they rose to the occasion to beat Munaca FC 1-0 in their local derby in an ABC Motsepe League clash at the Louis Trichardt Show Grounds on Saturday.

The Ablex side was strong in the midfield, but their striking force, marshalled by former Black Leopards sharpshooter Thobang Mncwango, let them down by shooting aimlessly. Realising that their scoring chances were slim, Munaca strengthened their striking force by introducing Phathutshedzo Mahwasane and Eethe Khaukanani, who formed a deadly combination at the front.

Munaca came close to scoring in the eighth minute, but the keeper, Ntloelene Ramphahlelo, denied them an obvious goal.

from close range.

Ablex’s centre forward, Thobani Mncwango, elicited the ire of the team’s supporters when he received a beautiful pass from Phiwayinkosi Dlodlo just outside the penalty box but hesitated for far too long to unleash before losing possession. A few moments later, Mncwango made up for this mistake by dishing out a well-timed pass to Ndamulelo Muthumuni, whose volley missed the goal mouth by inches.

Ablex kept on knocking on the visitors’ door. Their efforts paid dividends when their speedy forward, Ndamulelo Muthumuni, unleashed a volley that left the keeper stranded.

The game was a thriller to watch, especially in the second half, with both sides displaying entertaining football. Munaca came close to scoring twice in quick succession but failed to break through the defence of Ablex.

The two local GladAfrica Championship League teams, Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila FC (TTM) and Venda Football Academy (VFA), are geared to crush their opponents and secure places in the quarter-final stage of the TTM’s keeper, Shane Kock.

VFA’s way to the last-16 stage went via African All Stars, whom they beat 3-1 at the same venue early last month. VFA and University of Pretoria (Amatuks) are closely contesting for the league championship. The fact that the two teams play entertaining football is reason for the fans to expect a thriller.

Whether the striking force for Amatuks will have enough strength to break VFA’s wall, marshalled by Gerald Takwara and the team’s skipper, Msekeli Mvala, remains to be seen. VFA played to a 1-1 draw with JDR Stars at the same venue last Sunday.

TTM will undertake a journey to the Eastern Cape for their match on Saturday.

They will lock horns with the ABC Motsepe League side, Sinenkani FC, at the Mthatha Stadium. TTM did the unexpected when they beat the DStv Premiership League side, Lamontville Golden Arrows, 6-5 in their last-32 round match that was played at the Thohoyandou Stadium.

Premier Soccer League’s best referee, Philip Tinyani, retires

By Frank Mavhungu A well-known local professional football referee, Mr Philip Tinyani, has retired from blowing the whistle.

The 48-year-old resident of Dzimauli village in the Mutale area started his refereeing career way back in 1999. At that stage, he was officiating SAFA Vhembe Regional League matches. His performance at regional level had impressed the referees’ selectors, prompting them to promote him to officiate at professional level in the 2003/4 soccer season.

He said that his debut appearance in the professional ranks was when he officiated in the league match between Platinum Stars and Amazulu FC. During his illustrious career he officiated in, among others, the Soweto derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates on five occasions. He also handled the whistle during the Free State and KwaZulu Natal derbies during his 19 years as a professional referee.

Mr Tinyani said that his most memorable games were the Nedbank Cup final between Mamelodi Sundowns and Ajax Cape Town and the Telkom Cup final between Bloemfontein Celtic and Mamelo-

Following his superb performance in the field of play, Tinyani was named the PSL’s referee of the season in the 2014/15 soccer season. Mr Tinyani is the current referees’ coordinator in the South African Police Services. He joined the SAPS way back in 2009.

Asked what he was planning to do after retiring, Mr Tinyani stated that he was still undecided.

He said that quitting refereeing does not mean that he would be out of the football fraternity. The police sergeant revealed that he will either work as a match commissioner, referees’ instructor or physical trainer. Tinyani appealed to youths who wish to pursue a career in football refereeing to be self-disciplined in order to avoid situations where they fall into the temptation of taking bribes.
