11 May 2012 • Year 7, Vol.06 A woman, an entertainer with super talent and yet still pretty much grounded. It all started in dusty streets of Thohoyandou and like any other young superstar she met her fair share of ups and downs. Her name is Rotenda Maiwashe Mangoma. Today she boasts a show of her own on one of the country’s prime radio stations and doing it great. Let’s get up close and personal to discover the human behind the sweet voice on our midday radio slot. * Good day Rotenda and thanks for letting us into your world. You are welcome. I am humbled to have your spotlight in my world, though I am kinda feeling vulnerable. * Let’s talk ambitions and goals, what drives Rotenda in that regard? I live in my own world. By birth I am a motivator. My goal is to instill positivity in an African child’s mind, so an African child can know that they have ability and the right to conquer the world. That is what I live for. You catch my drift, right. I just happened to be doing it broadcasting. * Most people with or without talent don’t make it early in this industry, did you know that it was coming soon? Somewhat, the ‘me’ you know now is a journey that I have travelled for quite a while. I am a very optimistic African child. * You are now a content slot presenter and most of your fans knew you as a party oriented slot presenter; tell us a bit about the animal in you in terms of versatility. My early years of broadcasting have taught me that I do not live for myself but for other people as well. My right hand is for feeding myself and my left hand is for others. That is my philosophy in broadcasting. You can make a difference everywhere you are. * Apart from radio what do you do? Everything I do eventually becomes about radio. Does it mean that I don’t have a life? I wonder *hahaha* * What is your definition of a woman in your own terms? A woman is a human being who has the ability to see beyond today in a positive light, regardless of the negativity surrounding her.

The multi talented Boy from Tshitereke tried explaining but those guys were not interested then they started beating him up until he escaped and ran for his life. People let’s be realistic why are we abusing our entertainers, they’re just doing their job. It’s a crazy world.
** KINGRAP IS PUSHING TOO HARD AND FALLING HARD **
King Rap Crew has been in the music industry for 5 years but still their music is still struggling to hit the music shelves. They are always changing production companies and studios. What is wrong? They started from cutting grass, Dzunde Productions, Bomo Entertainment and now Macfam. What should we expect next? Who is on the firing line?
MAKOYA 2 Summer time has left the building and Winter is knocking on our doors. So that means, no more summer dresses, or flip-flops, or walking around naked in order to cool off in a summer heat wave. Our bikinis are being replaced by a comfy cardigan or jersey, winter leggings and most of all, hot water bottles and a bigger cup for our increase of coffee intake. But ALAS!!! Do not fret, for the fashion for this winter season, is not all grey or dreary. As I’ve paged trough our various Modern magazines, I’ve noticed, for once, that the colour for this new hibernating season is full of cheek, geometric and intricate pattern. Ranging from bright colours to leopard prints! It’s a wonderful shift in fashion perspective for a change especially for us eccentric types. But please, now that we all can let go and do the colourful dance of joy among the brown and dead winter leaves, don’t over do it. Make sure that when you wear for eg. a crazy colourful pattern dress, check your shoes and accessories stay neutral so that your ensemble will be complimented, and envied by all. Also make sure that you take note
11 May 2012 of the change in your complexion. With that, take in mind to replace your darker summer foundation, with a lighter winter one. Otherwise some may wonder why you are wearing such a dreadful mask all the time. And now for the dreaded “ Slipper Movement”. I am speechless. I was walking behind a very modernly dressed gentleman the other day. And as my appreciative gaze moved over his well dressed outfit, I got a shock, that instead of shoes that complimented his outfit, he was wearing SLIPPERS!! WHY??? I ask you, even if you are quickly going out to the shops for bread and milk, would you do that?? Slippers are for home, especially whilst wearing pajamas. The gentleman was in no hurry at all, he was taking a stroll, bread and milk absent from his hands, probably looking like that the whole day. And ladies, you also guilty of this horrific act of “The Slipper Movement”. Please, if your feet are cold, or you are craving a comfy atmosphere surrounding your moisturized feet, at least try the new Foux flees boots, that the celebrities are wearing so boldly.

Comedian Mboswobeni Mulugana is pulling it out again where his other film, Taboo, got screened to gauge its value. The short stay in the US allowed for Mboswobeni to network with other people who are active in the film industry. “I was sponsored by the South African Music Export. Talent is talent, and I was born for it.” He says that the Americans liked his mirth and comedy characteristics so they even requested him to consider staying in the US while doing his projects there, since his art is authentic. Maybe the authenticity in Mboswobeni’s work has to do with the fact that he has a Diploma The name 30 Cent is synonymous in Film and Television Production, a with stomach-cracking jokes which programme in which students are also can only be found in the hard-core given knowledge on ethics of copyright comedies by the Folovhodwe-born material and the danger of plagiarism. film director and unit production Mboswobeni reveals that manager, Mboswobeni Mulugana of professionally he started out on the Mboswobeni Comedy Film Production. Police dramas have proven to be a hit with our SABC 2 viewers and keeping in the same layer and form, brace yourselves for a new police drama with a stellar cast starring Aubrey Poo, Tshepo Maseko, Phuti Khomo, Luzuko Nteleko and Patronella Sello. The brand new locally produced drama series premieres on Tuesday, 08th May 2012 at 21h30 on SABC 2. “With Streets of Mangaung we are bridging the gap between communities and police and also emphasizing that working as a policeman or woman shouldn’t be all gloom and dull. It’s a series with a lot of life lessons and truths. Keeping up with the pace of our
evening slots we hope our viewers will embrace this drama especially looking at the talent that is on offer in this drama,” said Lebo Malete – SABC 2 Publicity. About the Drama Streets of Mangaung is a fast-paced and emotionally rich crime investigation series that shines a light on efforts behind community policing. It focuses as much on the lives of the police as it does on the life of the station – and as much on the community as it does on their crimes. It is intended as a feelgood series for the whole family despite its gritty subject matter. It will balance comedy with action and human drama.

Native Hip Hop needs tribal identity
Limpopo province is the arguably the most blessed province when it comes to diversity of cultures. It is against this backdrop that artists from this province to are able to come up with craft that can stand out on the world grand stage. The young generation of artists is not using the diversity of culture as a fertile ground to draw inspiration from when making their craft. For the past ten years we have witnessed a subgenre of hip hop known as Hip hop ya Venda. The genre appeals to young people and is growing in leaps and bounds, but the only thing that is missing in the Venda hip hop puzzle, is the lack of identity. In South Africa we have a lot of hip hop genre and artistes are sprouting everyday like mushrooms. In fact the probability is very high that the next person is a rapper these days. To position Venda Hip hop on the bigger scheme of things young stars need to sample traditional music like Tshikona to make it easily stand out among spaza, motswako and English hip hop. Gone are the days when talent was the ticket to claim fame. Artistes need to be creative and make themselves saleable to different markets. This article is not meant to knock anybody’s hustle but to give insight to young stars with plans to make it in the music industry one day. Zulu boy is making it big-time simply because his craft references from his culture and as a result there is no
way anyone can compare him with Aka or Nas. The moment any artist concentrates on “culture” Hip hop he/she will be given his/her own league. Artistes that spits in English will find the going, tough because they will be compared with local English cats and international cats. South Africa is the hub of hip hop in the African continent meaning rappers from other African countries are falling over on each other to have their fingers on the hip hop cake making the situation more difficult for ‘wannabe’ cats to be recognized in the game. Zimbabwean, Nigerian, Botswana and Zambian cats have flooded the South African hip hop music league. Notable names that come to mind are Zeus, Zubz and Kapitalk. The inclusion of regional stars in the South African hip hop league, gives record label bosses less of a headache when scouting for talent to sign. You then don’t need to be a rocket scientist to see that the more you rap in English the more the chances are to be relegated from the bench in to the hip hop game. It’s high time young artistes take advantage of ethnicity to flex muscles in the music industry and get recognized in the country. Tribal hip hop easily penetrates the international market because it hardly borrows influence from the over ditched subject matters of materialism. Music is a tool to convey messages just as in story telling or and movies so artistes need to tell a unique story that steals the show
everywhere in the world. The creator of Muvhango references his story from African gritty experiences and that has been the trump card of the drama when competing against other drama. Artistes should apply the same concept when writing scripts for their mix tapes and albums. My definition of African hip hop is music with stories that are referenced from African gritty experiences or hip hop with undertones of Afro instruments such as Mbila to give afro flavor to the rhythm: I know that hip hop is global and that makes it officially the only music prevalent in the world meaning in every country has its own subgenre of hip hop. When exporting craft artistes have to make sure that they have something new to offer to their fans on stage otherwise they might be disgraced before the capacity crowd or be outshone by the opening act. This article must not be mistaken as a scathing attack on English hip hop but should be seen as constructive criticism that helps our native dialect hip hop to be played on by mainstream radio stations just as Jozi is play listed on Phala-Phala Fm .

Music Reviews * By Ngerezah Artist: Toya DeLazy Single: Due Drop Ratings: 5/5 She hails from Mahlabathini in Durban, where most of her peers are running virginity tests and traditional dances, which is fair to me. 22-year-old pianist, singer, songwriter and composer Toya DeLazy arrived with a bang on the local scene. The moment I saw her music video last year “Pump it on” I couldn’t believe what I heard and saw. Like she said in one of her interviews “I am not afraid of edge and new ideas”. She took a risky turn and many would have sworn that she was not going to make it. She is the type of girl I would recommend young girls to take as a role model. She is way too original and to the point. Want to meet her one day!

Slikour is setting the records straight, many people ain’t happy with the truth he told. We normally praise these guys when they come up with lyrics that talk about moral decay and street injustice. For once Slikour stood up unedited and true to the world and himself. The track “blacks are fools” according to me is to the point and justifies the ill discipline and social decay standards from all walks of life in our today’s society. I don’t like the phrase as it sounds but I like the moral of the idea behind it. I mean really “when are we going to stop using money and materials to suppress each other?” When are we going to really say that we are free, start thinking and thinking deep?
