“It is a tokoloshe” By Elmon Tshikhudo

A strange animal with fingers like a human being has put a Tshauli-Tshamahala family in a spin. After its discovery on the roof of the family’s house on Monday, everyone is a bit restless and no one is able to explain the identity of this

queer animal. “It is a tokoloshe,” said one resident and other villagers harped on the same string. The fact that it was found on the roof in the wee hours of the morning strengthened the belief that it was a tokoloshe, sent by

Family member Vuledzani Masindi says he is not afraid of the tokoloshe. Here he is seen displaying the dead creature.

enemies of the family to cast a spell on them. According to eyewitnesses, the animal has fingers like a person and it also has genitals like those of a human being. Takalani Ramadzhiela, a family member, said he was called by his brother at around 01:00 and told that there was some strange movement on the roof of the house. “I did not waste time and rushed to the house, which is not very far from my home. I thought it was perhaps one of the cats or animals that we are used to, but what awaited me was frightening. [We found] an animal that has features like a human being. I have never seen such an animal,” he said. Ramadzhiela said that, as it was still dark, they did not want the animal to run away, so they had to guard it until the morning, with the help of the community. “We struggled to get it off the roof, but it resisted and I was left with no choice but to hit it with a stone on the head and it died,” he said. Ramadzhiela says the family does not have answers as to what exactly the strange visitor is. “All the people here are saying that it is a tokoloshe, but I cannot say that, because I know one is not allowed to speak of witchcraft. You can write what the people say. I believe in God and I have hope that God will give us all the answers. If it is the work of a person, he must

be disappointed, because we captured it before it could cause any harm,” he said. Ramadzhiela did not want to confirm whether they had consulted traditional healers. “What we did is a secret and we cannot tell the public. I just know that we threw the animal away in a river,” he said. The local headman, Phineas Ndou, said he was busy sending a child off to school when he was attracted by a huge crowd that had gathered at the scene. “We cannot tell what this animal is, but it is not the first time that I have seen this type of creature. In 1998, my brother killed a similar animal in another village. This is the first of its kind here and we cannot tell why it was here. What I can confirm, is that it has genitals like a human being. There has been talk of a mysterious being going around, and we are not surprised to see people happy that it had been killed. Maybe it has something to do with the lives of the people,” he said. Well-known traditional healer Vhomaine Vho Mbilivhili Neluvhola said the family should not panic. “If they are Christians, they should just pray and God will protect them if this is the act of a person. If they believe in their ancestors, they should visit a traditional healer who will perform rituals and the family will be safe,” he said.

Neluvhola said it could have been sent by the ancestors as an indication that one of the family members will become a traditional healer. Meanwhile, it is not known where the creature ended up as the family could not shed any light on its whereabouts. Rumour has it that women are celebrating in the village, saying that now that the creature is dead, perhaps their husbands will start giving them the attention they deserve. (The photos where shown to some animal experts and the most plausible explanation is that the animal is a thick-tailed bushbaby. These are fairly endangered. - Editor)

Vhembe FET staff members up in arms More than 400 angry staff members from the five workplaces under the Vhembe FET took to the streets on Wednesday last week in protest of alleged mismanagement and corruption at the institution. The workers, who are all organised under the Vhembe FET Forum, were joined by a large group of students in a march that ended at the college’s central office in Sibasa. Most of the demands concerned the college’s acting CEO, Dr Joe Tshifularo, who has been fingered as the main culprit for the problems at the college. They also accused him of running the institution in a dictatorial manner. Singing Hu do Lila Gwita Masiari (loosely translated as ‘an owl will cry in broad daylight’), the workers marched to the central offices and vowed to make the college ungovernable, should

the council not respond to their demands in a favourable way. The spokesperson of the forum, Thivhangiswi Nekhwevha, said they were tired as workers of being subjected to the worst form of corruption and mismanagement at the college. He said there was rampant nepotism at the college, where friends and relatives were hired without the proper procedure being followed. ‘New faces appear on a daily basis without having gone through the proper procedure. Core positions at Tshisimani were supposed to have been advertised and not just given to those favoured by the CEO,” said Nekhwevha. The forum also called for an immediate and thorough investigation into alleged tender irregularities. It is alleged that 400 computers were bought from one company by splitting up the purchases to avoid following tender processes. Even building

materials were bought in this manner, the forum alleges. “We are calling upon the council to investigate the travel and subsistence allowances, which we feel are done irregularly,” said Nekhwevha. The forum also called for the removal of the acting principal and some members of the management, i.e. the institutional development manager and the acting curriculum head, who were told to leave the campus immediately. The council was given seven working days in which to respond. Tshifularo was not present when the memorandum was handed over. The memorandum was received by Ms Elizabeth Nematandani, who stood in for the council chairperson, Judge Maumela. She promised the marchers that the council would study the memorandum and respond.

Suspects arrested for Sendedza murder The Siloam police have finally arrested two suspects who had allegedly shot and killed EMS unit manager Mr Ntavhanyeni Norman Sithubi in February this year. The two suspects, Easyman (Khombo Maanda) Chatimba Mudau (23) of Masvingo in Zimbabwe and John Kwangwari Chikwanda (20) are facing charges of murder. Mudau and Chikwanda are also facing charges of housebreaking and robbery. The 40-year-old victim, Mr Sithubi, was entering a restaurant at Sendedza when he met four heavily armed men who allegedly demanded his

car at gunpoint. Upon seeing that he was reluctant to give them his car keys, the suspects apparently shot him. He was rushed to the Siloam Hospital and later transferred to the Polokwane Provincial Hospital, where he died. The spokesperson for the Siloam police, W/O Edward Tharaga said that shortly before the incident, the suspects had allegedly robbed a local Somalian businessman of R2 000 and airtime vouchers to the value of R1 300 at the nearby HaMavhunga village. The suspects, who were heavily armed, first tried to hijack a car at Mphephu Resort. “They fired several shots at the driver of the car, who drove away,” Tharaga said. Tharaga added that the suspects then robbed a local shop at Sendedza, where they allegedly took R2 500. “That is where they had allegedly shot Sithubi,” he said. According to Tharaga, the suspects then went to the nearby Mandiwana village, where they broke into one of the houses and stole a laptop, cell phones and a car before fleeing. Both suspects appeared before the Dzanani Magistrate’s Court last week and the case was postponed to 4 June.

Musina protesters spend night in jail Furious residents of Nancefield in Musina are demanding the immediate resignation of Mayor Carol Phiri and the municipal council’s Chief Whip, Simon Madamalala. The demand, contained in a memorandum which was also sent to the office of the MEC for Local Government and Housing, was repeated this week during public meetings in the Klopper Stadium in Nancefield on Monday and Tuesday. One meeting was held after the arrest by Musina SAPS of various residents during Sunday night, including almost the entire management of the Musina Residents Representative Committee (MRRC), the organizers of a protest march to the municipal offices. The demand was repeated at the police station and at the court where the detainees were brought on Tuesday, without any charges being brought against them. Immediately after they were brought from the police cells to the court, the prosecutor ruled that they should be taken back to be released without bringing them before court. They were only released by the police some three hours later. According to witnesses, the ruling for their release was originally given by the prosecutor on Monday. This came in the midst of mounting tension between residents and the municipality, which led to repeated demonstrations. People allegedly protested at the houses of two officials on Sunday. According to provincial SAPS spokesperson Col Ronel Otto, the police acted on allegations of public violence.

The demand for the resignation of the mayor and the chief whip was met with this reply from the mayor’s office: “The mayor and the Chief Whip have been deployed by their political party after the local government elections.” Infuriated demonstrators earlier burnt an ANC T-shirt bearing the image of the Chief Whip at the municipal buildings. This happened two weeks ago after the mayor’s office refused to accept the memorandum presented at the end of a lawful march organized by the MRRC in collaboration with the SAPS and the municipality. Demonstrators responded with a “Voetsek” song, giving vent to indignation at what they rejected as “the totally unacceptable arrogance of the mayor and the Chief Whip”. The memorandum contains wide-ranging questions, some relating to serious allegations of corruption, especially in the handling of RDP housing and the appointment of municipal officials. According to MRRC chairperson Mshudu Ndou, the mayor’s office apologized last Monday for the earlier refusal to accept the memorandum and presented written answers to the memorandum, which was originally handed to her after a demonstration in March this year. Anger welled up again after news was received of what was described as equally arrogant remarks in the written reply. On several queries in the memorandum the MRRC, instead of being served with appropriate answers, they are instructed by the mayor’s office to “Attend IDP meetings and read municipal publications”, to get

their information from imbizos, ward committee meetings, from previously published advertisements and, in the case of rumours about the dates on and the way in which the mayor obtained her learner’s and driver’s licences: “Information available on request at the traffic station.” Almost every allegation of corrupt dealings referred to in the memorandum is dismissed with a challenge to provide proof as a precondition to any investigation. A request for the creation of a task team to listen to and address problems that people have concerning housing is dismissed with the statement: “An affective(sic) housing unit is attending to all housing needs in this municipality.” An enquiry about the reasons for the resignation of a large number of traffic officials in Musina is answered with: “Conditions for employment are a private matter between the employee and employer. This is purely an administrative issue.” In the same way, a request for a report on all positions advertised and filled since the new council was inaugurated, requesting post requirements, a list of candidates interviewed and score sheets of those finally appointed, is answered with: “This is purely an administrative issue. Administrators report to Council.” In his address to residents assembled at the Klopper stadium, shortly after his release from police detention, Ndou called on residents to remain calm and await further developments. The angry call for the two officials’ speedy resignation was, however, even louder than before.

Coach Heric decides it is time to leave Leopards Black Leopards coach Vladislav Heric resigned as the team coach on Monday night before the match against Bidvest Wits on Tuesday. Heric accused the club management of interference. “I couldn’t take it anymore,” he said. “I discussed the matter with the management of the club and wished them good luck in all their remaining matches.” He further stated that he did not want to waste the club’s time and money by promising that he would save the team

from relegation, when it actually looks impossible under the current circumstances. He revealed that he was ready to save the team from the relegation ghost, but the interference of the management led to the poor performance. The club’s brand manager, Mr Tshifhiwa Thidiela, said that they were surprised when Heric prepared the team and failed to turn up for Tuesday’s match against Wits. He said that they would now rely on the technical director, Sunday Chidzambwa, and assistant coach Abel Makhubela, who

was in Germany for a coaching course. Thidiela said Leopards had not received a letter of resignation. The chairperson of the team, Mr David Thidiela, said that they had received the resignation letter on Tuesday night after they were approached by members of the media, asking them to comment on the resignation of the coach. Leopards are left with only two matches (Jomo Cosmos and Ajax Cape Town) and they need to win only one match to Coach Vladislav Heric avoid relegation. resigned on Monday night.

“I will ensure that municipalities get a clean audit” - Motsepe municipality, but in many municipalities in the province." Motsepe added that, year after year, the AG found that councillors interfered with supply chain management processes or the appointment of staff in the organisation. "Councillors are forbidden from partaking in supply management processes," he warned. Motsepe congratulated the new mayor and urged him to work hard, together with all councillors, in ensuring that services are rendered to the people. Traditional leader Khosi-Pfareli Vho-Lilian Netshimbupfe wished Mutavhatsindi all the best with his appointment. For the first time in the history of Makhado Municipality, SAMWU members attended the inauguration of the mayor. Meanwhile the chairperson of SAMWU, Mr Elvis Tlou, said that his organisation was satisfied with the new changes in leadership at the municipality. "The new mayor must ensure that workers have working tools in order for them to be able to do their jobs," Tlou said. In his response, the new mayor, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi, said that he was very cognisant of the serious responsibility given to him and members of his council. "We accept this responsibility willingly. Our responsibility as council is to act now and act decisively on matters that concern improving the quality of the lives of our people," he said. He added that the municipality would expand the provision of water and the quality-testing programme in the main town, R293 towns and rural areas. The MEC for Co-operative Government, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (CoGSTA), Mr Clifford Motsepe, promised that he would make sure that all municipalities in the province achieved a clean audit report. Motsepe was speaking during the official inauguration of the newly appointed mayor of Makhado Municipality at an event that was held at the Vyeboom sports grounds on Tuesday. He said that no excuses would be tolerated in this regard. "I will be working closely with the municipalities in ensuring that we strengthen and instil good financial management," said Motsepe. "We must all be crusaders of good governance. Our clean audit goals are an objective we must achieve," he said. Officially inaugurating the new mayor, Motsepe said that all audit queries raised by the auditor general (AG) must be attended to with immediate effect. "Gone are those days when audit reports remained unattended year after year. Makhado Municipality has been the worstperforming municipality in the province for the past eight financial years. There is no time and we must ensure that the work begin in earnest right now. We must ensure that, by 2014, all municipalities achieve a clean audit. We need to do things differently in local government indeed," Motsepe said. He lashed out at lazy councillors and administrators. He told the new mayor: "Among your responsibilities as a political leader is the provision of oversight and monitoring. This remains a challenge not only in this

MTT tries to promote careers of youth

ANC will “spit out” the unruly members ANC national chairperson Baleka Mbete lambasted those she said were causing disunity in the party and told them that the ANC would spit them out. Speaking during the Worker’s Day rally at Thohoyandou Stadium last Tuesday, Mbete called for maximum unity and discipline in the ANC. She said there were members of the ANC who foulmouthed the ANC. “The fact that you are in pos-

session of an ANC card does not make you a comrade,” she said. She said that the ANC would spit out those who criticised other ANC members openly, because it was unbecoming behaviour and un-ANC. She said without mentioning names there were those who used public podiums and used state resources to badmouth the ANC. She hailed the workers and said the country was where it

was because of them. “Whether it is Worker’s Day, Freedom Day or centenary celebrations, we must remember where we are coming from,” she said. She warned ANC members in Vhembe not to allow themselves to be manipulated into voting for people with their own agenda which has nothing to do with service delivery. She said people who were bent on being corrupt were not advancing the interests of the ANC. SACP veteran The evergreen Colbert Mu George Mashamba kwevho and his band entertained said the ANC should spectators at the gathering. have a way to determine if the people they deployed knew what it meant to represent the ANC. “Maybe it is time we de-tender the state,” he said. He said houses built by contractors ended up being shoddy and the people who built the houses ended up not being paid. The government should rather employ people to build houses, he said.

Louis Trichardt Post Office still the best The Louis Trichardt Post Office has maintained its track record as the best Post Office in Limpopo. Louis Trichardt Post Office achieved a score of 99,78% conformance to operational standards during the latest assessment by the Post Office. With that, the Louis Trichardt Post Office achieved close to a 100% for the third time in a row. Ndala Mnisi, group executive in charge of Post Office outlets, presented a special trophy to

Louis Trichardt Post Office for this achievement. Mnisi says he is very proud of the team at the Louis Trichardt Post Office. “The aim of the oversight programme, where we check the extent to which post offices conform to operational requirements, is to improve customer service.” Mnisi says the programme also looks at queue lengths, customer compliments and suggestions, right down to the cleanliness of the branch – everything that affects the customer’s experience.

Dries Rossouw, branch manager at the Louis Trichardt Post Office, attributes the success of the branch to team work. “This is not one person’s trophy,” he says. “We received this award because we all work together to give our customers a better experience.” The Louis Trichardt Post Office does an average of 1 400 transactions per day and has seven postmen who deliver around 16 000 mail items per week to the town. Kutama man gets abducted in Sudan A resident of Tshikwarani in the Kutama area is being held captive in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum. Thabo Siavhe (28), together with three other humanitarian relief workers, was captured by North Sudanese soldiers while doing landmine clearance work on a United Nations contract. The four are said to have entered the wrong territory while busy with their duties, said a representative of the Sudanese government. Siavhe is an employee of the state-owned DenelMechem company in Cape Town and, together with his colleague from Sudan, was deployed to Sudan to be “part of a UN task team responsible for the lifting of landmines and the destruction of unexploded remnants of the recent civil war between the two countries,” Denel Mechem CEO Ashley Williams told Mail & Guardian Online last week. There has been an on-going clash between South Sudan and Sudan, and now the two Denel-Mechem employees are suspected of being military advisors to South Sudan. They are thought to have come to collect explosive debris for investigation purposes. Because of this allegation, the four men are being investigated and no foreign consul has been granted access to them yet. Back at home, Siavhe's family is worrying about their loved one's health and safety in the hands of the Sudanese soldiers. “It's painful to have seen your brother in March and now, in May, you're told that he is possibly suffering in a foreign land,” said Lindiwe Siavhe, holding Siavhe's son in her arms. On Saturday, the Siavhe family received professional counselling for them to remain strong in this time of pain and uncertainty. “We pray day and night for our son to be released,” said Siavhe's mother, Johanna Mahlangu-Siavhe (54), when Limpopo Mirror visited the family on Sunday. “I've not known how food tastes since we received news of his arrest in that far-away place. Thabo is a good son. We can't imagine his being involved in bad activities.” The Kutama Traditional Authority has been in contact with the South African ambassador in Sudan, and the council says they were told that Siavhe is in good health. “They say he might be released this week,” said the Kutama Traditional Authority's chairperson, Mr MG Muofhe. “We're also making a call for all people to start praying for Thabo's safety and release.”

Thabo Siavhe is being held captive in Sudan.

Sakhiwo takes blame for Mintirho’s fine Mintirho Business Enterprise, the construction company hired to build the only local clinic in Midoroni village in the Kutama area, was exonerated from paying the R35 000 fine imposed on them for illegally connecting water at the new Midoroni Clinic, after the project manager from Sakhiwo Health Solutions, Mr Creswell Phasha, admitted that he was to blame and not Mintirho. According to the Kutama Traditional Authority’s chairperson, Mr MG Muofhe, it was heard on 18 April during the hearing at the Kutama Traditional Authority’s offices that Phasha had failed to co-ordinate the process of water connection from the water pipes supplying Midoroni residents to the clinic site. “Phasha admitted his failure to manage the water connection process,” said Mr Muofhe. “He told us that he had hired Rametsi Drilling to do the connection.”

According to protocol, Phasha should have liaised with the steering committee first before doing any connections. As a result of his admission, Phasha (Sakhiwo) will be paying the R35 000 fine which was initially imposed on Mintirho Business Enterprise some three months ago, said the Kutama Traditional Authority. However, in an earlier article that appeared in Limpopo Mirror, it was stated that a “secret” letter surfaced wherein a drilling company was given the go-ahead to connect the water illegally. This letter was seemingly signed by a member of the steering committee, Ruth Maraheni, and a non-member of the steering committee, Mavhungu Mahafha. The two are expected to appear in the Kutama Traditional Authority’s offices to explain their side of the story soon, so that disciplinary action can be taken against them if they are found guilty.

Mr Clifford Mkhombo of Mintirho Business Enterprise visited the Kutama Traditional Authority’s offices on 18 April to explain why his company was not at fault. His visit only followed after the traditional council had threatened to stop the construction project at the clinic. “I am glad that we (Mintirho) have finally been cleared from this case,” said Mr Mkhombo when speaking to Limpopo Mirror. “That’s what I wanted.” Mr Matodzi Ralushai, spokesperson for the Vhembe Municipality, had since confirmed that officials from the Vhembe Municipality’s water section had disconnected the illegally connected pipes at the Midoroni Clinic. All attempts to contact Mr Creswell Phasha for comment proved fruitless. He did not respond to the questions emailed to him and he also did not answer phone calls.

Univen principal Professor Peter Mbati (left) explains how they are dealing with the issue of students with disabilities on campus to Deputy-Minister Henrietta Bogopane-Zulu. Also in the picture is council member Mr Shumani Ravhuanzwo. By Elmon Tshikhudo

Consider the needs of disabled students The visit to the University of Venda by the deputy-minister for women, children and people living with disabilities, Henrietta Bogopane-Zulu, may have opened up a few more opportunities for disabled students on the campus. During the deputy-minister’s visit, she questioned the admission forms which asks students

whether they have disabilities without qualifying why the question is there. Bogopane-Zulu said if the university asked such questions without providing a reason, it implied to disabled people that the question was meant to disqualify them from being admitted because of their disability. The deputy-minister said this while interacting with the university management regarding the conditions experienced by disabled students at Univen. The delegation included the vicechancellor, Professor Peter Mbati. It was then explained that the university’s disability policy was in its draft phrase. This did not satisfy the deputy-minister, who also wanted to know how it was being drafted. “Your policy, in order to be sound, must not look at the individual but the problem the individual faces,” she told the gathering at the council chamber. She said the university must have an enabling environment for people with chronic illnesses as well as disabled students. The deputy-minister emphasised that she did not arrive there on a fault-finding mission. “I am visiting all universities and later technikons and FETs, so that we have a uniform policy on disabled students,” she said. She said she would visit the students separately, unannounced, to get their side of the story. Univen principal Professor Peter Mbati said the university had moved a long way in terms of improving the conditions for students with disabilities, but conceded that it had to do without staff who have been provided with the necessary skills. “A number of our lecturers themselves are not adequately capacitated to deal with a diversity of students with different needs, but I foresee that the university will be playing a critical role in terms of making sure that accessibility to higher education for people with disabilities becomes a norm, “said Mbati.

Lebogang Lebese, Grade 11 learner of Louis Trichardt High School, is the runner-up in the senior category of the one-day tournament of the Polokwane Debating League (PDL). The PDL tournament took place on 5 May at Noorderland High School. Lebogang was also captain of the senior B-team that won three out of their four rounds.

Pupils of Nghomunghomu Primary read some of the books that were donated by Rally to Read. By Kaizer Nengovhela

R2.4 million to encourage more children to read Thousands of rural youths have benefitted from a R2,4 million initiative, aiming at stimulating reading and writing among rural youths in areas adjacent to Malamulele. Rally to Read, a partnership between government and the private sector, supplied study material to 14 primary schools in the area last Saturday. The schools that received the material, as well as soccer kits and balls, are all in Malamulele East Circuit. The principal of Khodobi Primary, Mr Mackson Shiburi, stated that after they had reached a partnership with Rally to Read, every aspect of the school improved. Local traditional leader Eddie Khosa said he was happy the government and private sector partnership was benefitting remote areas.“The extent to which children in our areas can devote time to their books is amazing,” he said and hailed the partnership. Mr Meyer Swanepoel of Rally to Read said it was a “partnership that works.” He said it was able to stimulate reading interest among young people in rural areas. Ms Sarah Mthintso, head of the Telkom Foundation, one of the partners that donated R2,4-million this year, said: ”We opted to support the initiative, because if you want to create a literate society, you must invest in the youth.”

The circuit manager for Malam- of reading and writing and schools ulele East, Dr Willy Chabalala, said that formed part of the project had South Africa had a problem in terms improved in that regard.

Two Zimbabwean dagga growers sent to prison The two Zimbabwean men involved in a dagga-growing syndicate at Sipedza Village outside Beit Bridge were each sentenced to an effective one-and-a half years in jail on Monday. The two accused, Issau Moyo (56), a village head, and Bhekimpilo Sikhosana (43), were arrested two weeks ago for cultivating more than 1 800 dagga plants. They were arrested during an early morning raid after police had received information during the Easter weekend that the two men were cultivating dagga in their field.

Moyo and Sikhosana were convicted by a local magistrate, Ms Sheila Nazombe, on their own pleas of guilty to charges of contravening a section of the Dangerous Drugs Act (growing an illicit plant). They were sentenced to 30 months’ imprisonment, of which 12 months were conditionally suspended for five years, leaving them with an effective 18 months to serve. It was testified that sometime in January this year, the two men grew dagga in their fields along the Mtshabezi River. Police then received a tip-off during Easter, and

they deployed officers to the accused persons’ field. They raided Moyo’s homestead and found 1 863 plants, measuring between 2cm and 150 cm tall. During the raid, police also discovered a nursery where there were about 600 plants in a swampy area. The two men were arrested and the plants uprooted and taken to the local police station, where they were kept as an exhibit. According to police investigations, the two men were smuggling the dagga to South African farms along the Limpopo River.

“Municipality must pay me back for house” - resident A Thohoyandou resident is up in arms after being told that he is not allowed to move into the new house that he built on a site allocated to him by the local municipality. According to Lyton Mugagadeli, he was very excited when the Thulamela Municipality allocated a site in Thohoyandou Block F to him in 2007. He said he invested more than R1,5 million to build a house at the site. The seven-roomed house with a double garage is neatly fenced and was almost ready for occupation. The excitement of Mugagadeli, a former Limpopo Transport Department official, turned into disappointment when he asked the municipality to connect his sewerage. “I was told that I will have to move from the area as there is no site and that the area is a flood area. This did not bother me much, as I was promised compensation by the municipality,” he said. After waiting for a long time, he

received a letter informing him that he would not be compensated. “I have lost a lot of money in building my house after being given the site by the same municipality that now says there is no site where my house is,” said Mugagadeli. “I cannot understand this because they showed me the site. If they have made a mistake, they should be bold enough to own up. They should just compensate me for the loss,” he said. He said he had been to the municipality’s offices several times, but he had not received any help up till now. The Thulamela Municipality’s spokesperson, Mr Nndwamato Tshiila, said it was surprising to hear of the complaints as the municipality had held several meetings with Mugagadeli. “We are in the process of formalising all due processes and he is at liberty to contact our office if he feels there are unaddressed issues,” he said.

An angry Mr Lyton Mugagadeli says the municipality has kept him waiting for a long time and should compensate him for the losses he incurred.

New uniforms for Masedi High pupils Pupils of the Masedi Combined High School in Tshikota were thrilled when they received school uniforms from a Good Samaritan. The Musina-based non-profit organisation Save the Children brought smiles to the face of 96 poor children, who each received a brand new school uniform. Most of the children who received uniforms are Zimbabwean children who came into the country to seek asylum. The children are now learning in South African schools. Save the Children’s educational officer, Ms Refiloe Moloise, said that her organisation donated school uniforms to needy children every year. “We identify disadvantaged children every year from various schools

in the area who do not have school school uniforms, so that they can be like other children at school,” she said. Moloise highlighted that her organisation also catered for the orphans, vulnerable and abandoned children staying at orphanages. She added: “We also assist children from other African countries like Zimbabwe who are learning in South Africa.” Makhado Municipality’s acting Speaker, Cllr Tebogo Mamorobela, was a guest speaker during the event that was held at the Tshikota Community Hall last Thursday. She said that the government always welcomed such initiatives and encouraged NGOs and the private sector in launching projects aimed at uplifting the community. “We

really appreciate Save the Children’s contribution in our community. The partnership means a lot to us,” she said. Mamorobela said that the organisation’s move would motivate the children to attend classes. She called upon local businesspeople to bring more uniforms to the children. “It can not only be the Save the Children from Musina whereas we have businesspeople around us. Let us all get involved,” Mamorobela added. The uniforms donated included shoes, socks, jerseys, trousers, shirts and skirts for the girls. Masedi Combined High School’s principal, Mr Silas Makhwathani, expressed his appreciation for the donated uniforms.

Travellers formed long queues at Beit Bridge Border Post between last Tuesday and Friday. By Mashudu Netsianda

Long queues at border post over weekend The Beit Bridge border post was heavily congested between last Tuesday and Friday as scores of travellers, mostly Zimbabweans based in South Africa, were returning to the country after spending the holiday at home. When Limpopo Mirror visited the border post on the South African side, scores of travellers could be seen queuing outside the immigration tent. Buses and light vehicles had virtually occupied the entire parking space. On the Zimbabwean side, the queues were not very long compared to South Africa, where the queues stretched for about two kilometres. Police had a tough time as they tried to control the queues. Some Zimbabwean travellers, particularly the local residents,

had to cancel their trips to South Africa as a result of the delays. “I had to return home because the queues were just unbearable. It looks like South African immigration officials are not keen on serving travellers, unlike on the Zimbabwean side, where the queues were faster,” said Ms Miriam Moyo, a regular traveller from Kadoma. Another traveller, Mr Michael Ndlovu, said: “I travelled all the way from Bulawayo, intending to cross to Musina for shopping, but it was congested and I ended up postponing the trip. We spent six hours and there was no progress, hence I had to go back to Zimbabwe.” Zimbabwean’s assistant regional immigration manager in charge of the Beit Bridge border post, Mr Charles Gwede, attrib-

Plain Truth

The quest for morality

None is as blind as the cheating husbands For many men, cheating on their spouse is part of the bigger problem that we touched upon in our previous article, Lack of fear for the Lord. Sin has so blinded many men that they do not see anything wrong with hurting their women. A solution to the problem can only come when men can commit to love their partners as they love themselves. This kind of love only comes when you have a healthy relationship with your Creator. A man who truly loves God is also able to handle this wonderful, precious gift called a ‘woman’ in his life. Handle her, to a point of not only committing to her alone but also cherishing her and protecting her. The basis is that our love must be grounded on Christ’s love for his church. That is why God commands husbands to love their wives just like Christ loves his church (Ephesians 5:25). This is self-sacrificial love - one initiated in the midst of rejection (Romans 5:8); one that is selfgiving; one that protects one’s own. But most of all, one which is consistent. Christ’s love for his church never changes: “He gave himself for her” (Ephesians 5:25). Genesis 2:24 underscores

the importance of commitment when a man and woman make the decision to come together. Commitment means, in this instance, permanence! Christ’s love for his church teaches us all of the above, but also how to behave, leading to a lovelife full of commitment and consistency. Consequently, the question that remains is: How do we build and accomplish a life-long commitment when love is in view? There are six types of behavior from God’s Word that will help us better comprehend what it means to be a godly man in the area of maintaining relationships, namely: (1) A godly man does not engage in emotionally based relationships with a woman to whom he has not made a serious commitment towards engagement, marriage and family (Genesis 2:24); (2) A godly man chooses not to lust after a woman (to satisfy himself at her expense) (2 Timothy 2:22). This is the decision that Joseph took when he refused to sleep with Potiphar’s wife in Genesis 39. (3) A godly man understands God’s design for sex. Sex is designed for marriage, and sex outside of marriage can prove detrimental to both the

man and the woman; (4) A godly man knows that inappropriate interaction with women can have a lasting negative effect on their view of men and their regard for women. You must approach them with respect and as your very own sisters (1 Timothy 5:1-2). We need to put off the old man in this regard (Ephesians 4:21-24); (5) A godly man views himself as a leader in any relationship and accordingly takes a leading role in the establishment of a godly household. Joshua 24:15 serves as an example: “I and my family will worship the Lord!”; (6) A godly man uses God’s Word as the ultimate guide for his life. David declares in Psalm 119:105, “Your instructions are a lamp that shows me where to walk, and a light that shines on my path.” The truth is: a man can be such a loving person and one who does not hurt his partner only if we enlist God to be our guide in our lovelife and, of course, enjoy the company of your partner more than any other woman in this world. So let us be real men and do what is right. The following article will focus on women and see what they have in store for us. - Prof Derrick Mashau (Derrick. Mashau@nwu.ac.za)

uted the delays to an influx of travellers, mostly Zimbabweans working in South Africa, returning to South Africa. “South Africa had a long weekend, from Friday until Tuesday. There was bound to be pressure at the border as scores of Zimbabweans working in that country returned after spending the holiday with their families,” he said. Home Affairs officials who declined to be named said: “We did not anticipate that travellers would come out in such big numbers. We normally handle a huge influx during Easter and Christmas. This sudden increase came to us as a shock. We are doing our best to speed up the process as some of them are being cleared at the tents and inside the immigration hall.”

Two principals for Odzias Davhana High Pupils of Odzias Davhana High School in Mpheni outside Elim were left totally confused when two principals pitched up at the school last Wednesday. This happened after the school’s legitimate principal, Mr Albert Muthelo, returned to the school after he had served and completed his suspension period. The Department of Education had, in the meantime, replaced Muthelo with a caretaker principal, Mr Morris Chauke. Both Muthelo and Chauke continued working as principals of the same school for that day. They even shared an office. Teachers who spoke to Mirror on condition of anonymity blamed the Soutpansberg East circuit manager, Mr Peter Netshia, for the confusion. “The caretaker principal should have left when the school’s legitimate principal returned,” they said.

They added that the caretaker principal should have returned to his previous school where he is a principal. Chauke is principal of Tshikhwani Primary School that is situated at Ha-Rathidili. The sad episode started when Muthelo was put on suspension for a period of 18 months, following allegations of failing to properly control leave forms for educators and the failing to manage time books at the school. Muthelo had been working at the circuit office, pending the investigations into the allegations. He was found guilty on the charges and was sanctioned to spend two months without receiving a salary. “I had to report for duty last Wednesday, having completed the the suspension, only to learn that the caretaker principal was still there. It really surprised me. We then continued working,

sharing the same office,” said Muthelo. A special meeting was held to clear the air at the Waterval police station, which was attended by the senior district manager for education in Vhembe, Dr Nthambeleni Rambiyana, and other senior officials from the provincial office, last Thursday. One of the resolutions taken was that Muthelo must report at the circuit office for duty, a decision which many criticised. Attempts to reach the caretaker principal, Mr Chauke, as well as the circuit manager, Mr Netshia, were unsuccessful. Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the provincial department of education, Mr Pat Kgomo, only said that the previous principal, Mr Muthelo, had been told to report at the circuit office. “He will report to the circuit office until we find a placement for him somewhere,” he said.

Stranded deportees fuel crime at border Ex-convicts and stranded deportees from South Africa are believed to be fueling crime in Beit Bridge, resulting in a surge in the number of robberies occurring in the border town. Police and residents have attributed the increase in robberies to the resumption of the deportation of Zimbabweans from South Africa. The exercise has also seen an increase in the number of ex-convicts being “brought home through Beit Bridge.” Residents called on police to intensify night patrols at criminal hot spots, such as the Dulibadzimu Bus Terminus, Hlalani Kuhle houses and Mfelandawonye. “Since the resumption of deportations, there has been an increase in the spate of robberies in Beit Bridge. Of late, we have witnessed a sharp increase in robberies occurring in Dulibadzimu, especially at night. Hardly a week passes by without a rob-

bery,” a resident said. “We urge police to intensify their patrols as we now endure sleepless nights for fear of being attacked by robbers,” said Ms Nditsheni Mudau of Dulibadzimu. Another resident, Mr Tapson Ndou, said his neighbour was robbed of household property last week by a group of four men who descended on his home in the middle of the night. Ms Thabang Tlou of Dulibadzimu said: “I woke up on Friday morning and found the door of my bedroom wide open and my handbag missing. In fact, it looks like the suspect first peeped through the window before proceeding to the door, where he destroyed the lock to gain entry and stole my handbag

while I was sleeping,” she said. The local police spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Lawrence Chinhengo, also expressed concern over a rise in armed robberies in the town. On being deported from South Africa, returnees are taken to the International Organisation for Migration’s (IOM) reception and support centre, where they are offered overnight accommodation, medication, food and transport to proceed to their respective homes. However, a majority of the deportees turn down any form of assistance from the IOM, and those who opt to go home using their own means are released, and most of them resort to crossing back to South Africa.

Police boss warns lazy police officers Police officers who are not doing their jobs and laugh at people when cases are reported will face disciplinary action, warned Limpopo Police Commissioner General Simon Mpembe. He spoke during an imbizo held in Thohoyandou this week to listen to problems the local community experience. Despite the Thohoyandou police station’s being one of the best-resourced stations, crime statistics continue to escalate and the number of unresolved crimes continues unabated. This is causing unhappiness within the community. Members of the Indian community, specifically, reckon they are victims of the crime sprees and the number of robberies and housebreakings in the Thohoyandou and Sibasa areas are just escalating. These complaints, as well as a number of others, prompted the police to host an imbizo to give all stakeholders the chance to speak about their challenges and to give input as to what could be done to make the level of crime decline in the area. Issues raised by members of the community included the handling of cases where people complained that police are not updating them about the progress of their cases. Some blamed the police as being in cahoots with criminals, which makes it difficult for them to investigate cases. There were also allegations that police were sometimes reluctant to arrest some criminals. The police were also blamed for not attending to complaints in time, with the excuse that there are no drivers at stations. In reply, General Simon Mpembe said they had heard the cries of the people and that was the rea-

son why they haddecided to come and spend the day there, with a view to seeing how to deal with these to the satisfaction of everyone. Mpembe said he had learnt with dismay that some members of the community went to the police station and left without getting assistance. He warned police officers not giving service to the community to change or face dismissal. He told the community that the police had an obligation to serve their communities and that if the community was unhappy about the level of service they were getting, they should feel free to visit the station commissioner. “Our members have name tags. If you feel you were not treated well, please report the particular member to the station commissioner. Wheels for Forster

Well-known retired high school principal and now a respected businessman Vhamusanda Vho John Mudau and his educator wife, Vhakoma Vho-Tshamano Bernice Mudau of Ngovhela, celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary the past weekend. The couple received a surprise thanksgiving party that was organised by the family and was attended by people from far and wide. Guests included the traditional leaders chief Edzani Ratshitanga of Ngulumbi and Mahonise of Mahonise village in Malamulele. The family thanked the couple for the role they played in assisting other families and promoting unity in the family. In response, Vhamusanda Vho John Mudau said it had not always been smooth sailing, but they were just happy that God had looked after them throughout the years. He urged young couples to let God guide their families and to take care of each other if they were to sustain their relationships. In the photo are the Netshitungulu family members presenting some gifts to Mudau (fourth from left) and his wife Bernice (fifth from left).

"The new wheelchair is a godsend and we never expected it," said the jubilant mother of a 22-year-old disabled man who received a new wheelchair last weekend. Forster Shibambu of Peninghotsa in the Malamulele area was given a wheelchair on Saturday by Rally to Read, a partnership between government and private businesses. The presentation took place at Khodobi Primary School. Mr Meyer Swanepoel of McCarthy Toyota, who spoke on behalf of Rally to Read, said that although they had a partnership with the school to promote reading in remote areas, they felt duty bound to go beyond this scope when they learnt of the young man's plight. “We are not taking credit, and it is God who gave him the wheelchair,” said Swanepoel. Ms Christina Shibambu (40), Forster's mother, said her son was so disabled that he could not do anything for himself. “With the wheelchair, it will be better to push him rather than to carry him, because at 22 he is no longer a small boy,” she said.

The hardworking police officials with the big haul of illegal cigarettes. By Elmon Tshikhudo

Police confiscate cigarettes worth R700k Malamulele police are on cloud nine after arresting three Zimbabwean nationals, who had allegedly smuggled Zimbabwean cigarettes worth more R700 000 into South Africa. Police spokesperson WO Alson Mapindani hailed this as a major coup. “This is a big success against crime and it could not have happened without the support of the community, who gave the police a tip-off,” said Mapindani. The three Zimbabwean nationals are two men, Sekay Dzudani (38) and Owen Muzunze (48), and a 36-year-old woman,

Mariam Chiwawa. They were arrested at the Malamulele bus stop two weeks ago, after they were found with the cigarettes they were taking to Johannesburg. Mapindani praised his counterparts in Thohoyandou. “They received the tip-off from members of the community and relayed the message to us and our officers, who traced the bus with the illegal cigarettes and made an arrest,” said Mapindani. After searching the bus, which had come from Mount Rider Motel to the Malamulele bus stop, the police found the illegal cigarettes in a goods

compartment. They found 21 437 cartons of cigarettes, with a total value of R749 947. The driver of the City to City bus was also detained and the bus impounded by the police. The five police officers who worked on the operation are WO Thomas Chuma, Const Rhulani Ngwenyama, Const Richard Masingi, Const Phillip Sono and Const Caroline Samba. The three suspects and the driver of the bus, identified only as Mr Siweya (52), were not asked to plead. Their case was postponed and they remain in custody.

Three arrested for Madombidzha robbery Two men and a 17-year-old boy appeared before the Tshilwavhusiku Magistrate’s Court on a charge of armed robbery last Monday (30 April). It is alleged that Vincent Likhonelo (23), Rendani Mpofu (33) and the seventeen-year-old youth entered Mr Temesgen Hamza Alye’s shop, pretending to be customers, at around 10:00 on 26 April. The shop is situated in Zone Two in Madombidzha

village. Once inside, one of the three suspects pulled out a silver firearm for Mr Alye to see, said the spokesperson for Tshilwavhusiku police, Constable Musiwalo Mahuwa. Another one demanded that Mr Alye give them all packets of cigarettes in the shop. When he refused to do so, they started hitting him on the head with unspecified objects and he started to bleed profusely. Alye

then fell down on the floor, Mahuwa said. According to the police statement, the three then took R1 000 cash from the money box as well as airtime vouchers and Alye’s mobile phone. The total value of the stolen property is estimated at R2 905. The case was postponed to 15 May for further investigation and the three remain in custody.

Embarrassing 2-0 blow for Rospa United

Black Leopards, who are being haunted by the relegation ghost, were spotted at the True Worshippers Christian Centre ( TWCC ) in Kutama two weeks ago. The team was led by technical team adviser Mr Sunday Chidzamba and captain Mongezi Bobe. The spokesperson of the team, Mr Tendani Thidiela, said that his team was seeking divine intervention to ensure that they remain in the Premier League. He urged the people of Limpopo to embrace the club, stressing that Lidoda Duvha will not be relegated at the end of the season. Black Leopards get a 2-5 reality check

Triegies’ U/15’s win soccer cluster The U/15 soccer team of Louis Trichardt High School had a good season and came as far as being crowned champions in their cluster. Their coaches, Messrs Bethuel Tshivhenga and Gerard Rossouw, were proud of them when they won the Soutpansberg East circuit in the COPA Coca-Cola circuit on 24 April on their home turf. They beat Makhado Comprehensive 4-0, Murunwa 3-1 and Masedi 5 -1.

As winners of the Soutpansberg East Circuit, the U/15s of Louis Trichardt competed against Soutpansberg North (Musina High School) and Soutpansberg West (Benny’s Care Sports Academy). Louis Trichardt scored six goals as opposed to the one goal of Musina. It was, however, the match against Benny’s Care that coach Tshivhenga described as the highlight of their season. “We drew 1-1, but it was an

excellent game against the team of an academy that specializes in sport,” Tshivhenga said. As Soutpansberg cluster champions, the team played other teams of the Vhembe District at the Makwarela Stadium on 2 May. They lost 0-1against Lwamondo and 0-4 against Malamulele. The winners of the final of the FNB U/15 Legacy Programme were Makhado FC, with Swakoteka FC from Bungeni in second place.

Celtic give Murunwa a day to remember The Louis Trichardt Soccer Academy will never forget last Sunday, as they were brutally walloped 4-1 by Madombidzha Celtic in a Limpopo Dairy League match played at Madombidzha. Celtic dictated terms from the start, with their midfielders distributing dangerous passes to the frontrunners. A defender of Murunwa handled the ball inside his penalty area and the referee pointed to the white spot. Rendani Mulaudzi scored the

easy penalty. Celtic’s celebration was cut short when Muofhe Nevhulaudzi intercepted a short pass and beat the keeper to make the score 1-1 at half time. Murunwa’s dribbling wizard, Mathata Ratshilaye, played his heart out, but it was difficult for him to find his way through the rock-solid defence of Celtic, marshalled by Thabo Ramathlo, Sipho Mudalana and Mudzusi Sadiki. Murunwa came close to scoring in the 60th minute, when Thabelo Tshikweta went loose

and unleashed a shot from close range. Fortunately for the hosts, their keeper, Masilo Mushukwa, palmed the ball away for a corner kick. The home team increased the tally in the 68th minute, when Silas Rammbona scored easily. In the 74th minute, Tshilidzi Maumela left keeper Maduvha Mulaudzi flatfooted after recei ving a neat pass from Stanley Mukhuba. Maxwell Ramunen yiwa scored his team’s fourth goal in the 85th minute.

Brothers and Freedom Birds in final Tshifhire Northern Brothers and Mulodi Freedom Birds will clash at the Makwarela FNB Stadium on Saturday to decide who the winners will be in the Safa Vhembe SAB Champ of Champs tournament. Northern Brothers beat Tshakhuma RO 3-2 in the semifinal, while Freedom Birds were too strong for Mukula Santos (3-1).Saturday’s main match will start at 15:00. The first match

will be the losers final between Mukula Santos and Tshakhuma RO, starting at 13:00. The winner will bank R20 000 and the losers in the final will receive R15 000. Mr Rendani Mudumela, manager of Tshifhire Northern Brothers, has appealed to the club’s enthusiastic supporters to stay calm, saying they will win the play-off. He said that apart from the fact that there was a lot at stake in the league matches, it

was time for them to fulfil their promises. They had promised the fans that they will bring home some silverware this season. Mr Nkhangweleni Sengani, coach of Freedom Birds, said they had huge respect for Brothers, especially when considering their performance. “We have been motivating the players on and off the pitch. We have what it takes to win the championship,” said Sengani.

Birds through after beating Muthelo FC Mulodi Freedom Birds are through to the final of the Vhembe Promotional Knockout Competition, after winning their first three matches. They beat Muthelo FC 4-2 in their preliminary-round match last Tuesday. Their quarterfinal match was against Joe’s Express, whom they beat 3-0

at the Tshifulanani Stadium on Saturday. They then beat Mukula Young Santos 2-1 in the semifinal stage of the competition at the Makwarela Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Saturday’s match against Joe’s Express was characterised by wasted scoring opportunities. Joe’s Express suffered a heavy

blow in the 18th minute, when their diminutive striker, Lutendo Matshavha, sustained a serious injury. He was replaced with Levy Munyai. A scramble within the danger area of Express gave rise to the Birds’ opening goal. Tshifhiwa Netshisaulu finished off a rebound to give his side a 1-0 lead at half time. Freedom Birds strengthened their striking force by introducing Dakalo Sengani and Master Mahada for Mukona Makhado and Sydney Sengani respectively. The replacements were not in vain, as they scored their second goal via Sengani in the 67th minute. Express looked hopeless after the Birds’ second goal. Their third goal came in the 84th minute. A substitute, Rotshidzwa Nyadzane, was on target, following a square pass from Vhutshilo Nemulodi. Leopards move away from danger zone Black Leopards moved two points clear of the relegation zone at the bottom of the Absa Premiership on Tuesday night after playing to a goalless draw with Bidvest Wits in Johannesburg. The Limpopo side could still be overtaken by second-fromthe-bottom Santos and forced into the promotion/relegation playoffs, but with just two matches left for both teams, Leopards will be confident of retaining their topflight status. The Clever Boys, despite racking up a 14th successive league match in which they failed to record a win, are now mathemati-

cally certain that they will not be relegated. However, their ailing form remains a major concern. The opening stages of the match saw little in the way of goalmouth action, with both teams struggling to create anything more than mere half chances. Wits looked more comfortable on the ball and they got their attacking players more involved in passing movements than their opponents.Wits’ Emille Baron took two knocks from late challenges by Kingston Nkhatha (which earned the striker a yellow card) in the dying minutes of the first half, the second of which seemed to injure the goalkeeper’s

left ankle. He was replaced at the start of the second half by Energy Murambadoro. Around the hour mark, Leopards built up a head of steam and tested the substitute goalkeeper with an effort from the edge of the box by Joshua Obaje. Murambadoro proved to be equal to the shot, making a decent save low to his left. The best chance of the night saw Nkhatha shoot on target from the ‘D’ of the Wits penalty area with just a few minutes of regulation time left, but once again Murambadoro denied the Limpopo side Sibusiso Vilakazi of Bidvest Wits tussles with Itumeleng Duiker of Black Leopards. ©Pic Sydney with a fine save. E. & O.E.

It was a weekend of mixed fortunes for Tshakhuma RO United. They beat Makovha All Stars 4-0 in their Vhembe Promotional Knockout match at the Tshifulanani Stadium on Saturday, but they were booted out of the competition the following day, when Tshifhire Northern Brothers beat them 3-2 at the Makwarela Stadium. Their match on Saturday against All Stars was a balanced affair for the first 45 minutes. United made their intentions clear from the first whistle. What should have been their opening goal turned into a Tshifhiwa Mulaudzi of United (left) and nightmare. Khathutshelo Mudau Phumudzo Mugwena of All Stars chase the scored with a bicycle kick from the ball. edge of the penalty box in the 10th

minute, but the goal was disallowed because Mudau had handled the ball before unleashing. United scored a legitimate goal in the 24th minute, however, when Mudau scored from the corner. Tshakhuma RO United increased the margin seven minutes into the last half. Mudau received a neat pass from Lufuno Mugodi and beat the keeper with a volley. Mudau was cautioned with a card for taking off his jersey while celebrating his goal. United scored his team’s third goal via Victor Makhaukhau. He hooked in a loose ball, following a scramble in the box. Mugodi scored his team’s fourth goal in the dying minutes.
