By Andries van Zyl After almost a year on the run, one of the Soutpansberg’s most wanted criminals is finally behind bars … again.

The 30-year-old Brighton Chauke’s reign of terror came to an end on Sunday afternoon when he was captured by the police at Waterval (Elim).

Since his escape from the police’s holding cells in Musina on October 4 last year, Chauke had manage to elude capture while spreading terror within the farming community in die Beja area. At the time of his escape he, along with his brother Shorty, were both awaiting trial for a murder case in Musina as well as a spate of armed robberies in Louis Trichardt. Shorty (41) has since been sentenced to 45 years’ imprisonment on the armed robbery charges.

Chauke’s terror campaign in die Soutpansberg gained momentum after a housebreaking on one of the Rietvlei smallholdings at the beginning of May this year, during which a .303 rifle was stolen.

Since then, Chauke and his two accomplices have been positively connected to a spate of violent armed robberies, housebreakings and attempted murders in the area. This included the violent and near-fatal attack on Messrs Jan Louw (49) and

Ferdie Landman (19) on the farm Nooitgedacht on May 28. It has also come to light that Chauke has indeed been positively connected to the murder of the 51-year-old Mr Eric Neshunzhi on the farm Goedehoop on July 1.

Chauke’s run of luck came to an end on Sunday when a member of the public recognized him while Chauke was sitting around a fire with friends in Waterval. He apparently lodged at a house at the Mpheni informal village. The police were notified and Chauke was apprehended shortly afterwards.

He did not put up any resistance. One of his accomplices, Victor Ndlovu (31), was also arrested.

According to local police spokesperson Capt Maano Sadike, the police recovered the .303 rifle, after Chauke took them to where he had hidden it on a farm near Beja. This rifle has, in the meantime, been positively identified as the one stolen during May at the Reitvlei smallholdings.

At the time of his arrest, Chauke and his accomplice had been linked to 43 serious crimes, including 16 housebreakings, 4 house robberies, 12 business break-ins and 1 business robbery, three attempted murders, three armed robberies, two car hijackings and two murders (the one in Musina and the one at Goedehoop).

“We’re not selling stands” - Nengovhela The chairperson of the Tshifhefhe Communal Property Association (CPA), which has recently acquired the Wel­ gevonden 4LT (Portion 27) farm, denies that they are selling stands to thousands of hopefuls who want to own property at the new township.

It is alleged that more than 3 000 people from around Louis Trichardt and Thohoyandou had already paid money, thinking that they would get stands at this new development. When asked about the money that had already been paid by people who wanted stands, Nengovhela said that there wouldn’t be any refunds.

He said the money was meant for transport and food for the people who cleared the bushes.

“Our title deed on the farm clearly indicates that we have to engage in farming and not to start a residential area. People must be careful of what they say.

We are not selling the stands,” Nengovhela said.

One of the people who paid the money, thinking that he was going to receive a stand on this particular farm, insisted on a refund. “When I paid the money, I was told that I would be given a stand. Now these people are saying that there won’t be any stands that will be erected on the farm.

They must give the money back that I had paid,” he said.

However, Nengovhela does not seem keen on any refunds. He also claims that only 200 people paid the R120. “We have to build an agri-village (comprising) of 6-room units only, so that farm workers can reside on the farm while working here. This is what we had said as the CPA,” he added. According to Nengovhela, the CPA has also filed claims for the nearby Nooitgedacht and Palmietfontein farms. “We are waiting for the government to buy the farms and hand them back to us. This is the land of our forefathers and we want it back,” said Nengovhela.

Farmer needs interdict to stop farm occupation Last week’s illegal selling of stands for the purpose of township development on a repossessed agricultural farm just outside of Louis Trichardt was not an isolated incident.

On the same day that hundreds of wanna-be property owners descended on the farm Welgevonden to pay their R120 deposit for a stand, the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria granted an urgent interdict against the illegal occupation and demarcation of stands on a farm near Elim.

The application for urgent relief against illegal occupation was brought on July 28 by the 71-year-old Mr Edward Mafune and his wife Masundwa, registered owners of portion 1 of the farm Hayani 51, portion 3 of the farm Doornspruit 41 and the remaining extent of the farm Uitspanning 40. This follows after members of the Ramaru community started demarcating stands on his farm along the fence bordering the Mpheni informal village. The first respondent in the case was Chief A Ramaru, second respondent Mr George Ramalata, third respondent Mr Rakuam­ bo, fourth respondent Chief M F Davhana and fifth and sixth respondents Mr O Maumela and the Regional Land Claims Commissioner.

In his founding affidavit, Mafune stated that he had gathered that the Davhanas and Ramarus had both lodged a land claim on his farm on behalf of their communities. However, Mafune stated, he had not been served with any documentation pertaining to the

land claim, nor had he been advised that the land claim had been Gazetted. In the affidavit he submitted, however, that the publication or validity of the claims was irrelevant for the purpose of the urgent relief sought.

Mafune’s troubles started on July 13 when he, whilst inspecting his farm, came across several stands being laid out on his property. Here he met a Mr George Ramalata, who told him that Chief Ramaru was the person responsible for allocating stands and allowing demarcation to take place and that they were within their rights to do so.

The following day, Mafune asked the Makhado Municipality for assistance in the matter, but the municipality merely referred him to the Department of Land Affairs, where he managed to lodge a complaint. According to Mafune, the department had met with the Davhanas, as well as the Ramarus, but had failed to involve him as the legal owner of the land in any discussions. By July 20, the illegal occupation and demarcation of stands continued.

On this day, Mafune met Mr Rakuambu on his property, who was busy allocating stands and allowing people to cut down trees and clean demarcated areas. “… on my last inspection on 26 July, I established that the Davhanas were now joining in the intended occupation and preparation to occupy as the result of the first and third respondent’s action,” Mafune stated in his affidavit.

Seen in light of the Department of Land Affairs’ failure to involve him as someone with a direct and substantial interest in negotiations, Mafune stated in his affidavit “that there is a threatened invasion of my property and having regard to what has happened in the past pertaining to unlawful occupation of land and the pitfalls that landowners face in order to get people evicted from their land, that the relief sought is the only viable remedy that I have against the intended unlawful actions by the respondents.” Mafune further stated that if occupation took place, the whole process as envisaged by the Restitution of Land Reform Act would be circumvented.

As basis for the urgency of the interdict, Mafune argued that “it is clear that the demarcation will now proceed to full-scale occupation.”

The matter was heard by Justice De Vos in the High Court on August 2, with a ruling in Mafune’s favour. De Vos ordered that the respondents be interdicted from allocating, demarcating and/or taking any actions in furthering or promoting the occupation of any portion of the said farms. The respondents were also ordered to remove any demarcation or allocation of land within 12 hours from service of the court order. The respondents were also prohibited from entering onto Mafune’s land for any reason whatsoever.

As for cost, De Vos ruled that the first, second, third and fourth respondents were jointly and severally ordered to pay the costs of the application on a party and party scale, the one to pay the others to be absolved. No order as to costs was made against the fifth and sixth respondents.

The respondents undertook to abide by the ruling.

Chauke behind bars ... again (Contd from P1) Apart from the murder charge in Musina, all of the charges relate to cases reported in the Soutpansberg area since March this year.

Police are at present still searching for a third known accomplice, who is believed to be armed and dangerous.

Both Chauke and Ndlovu appear in the Louis Trichardt District Court on Wednesday morning. Their case was, however, postponed until August 24. The court also continued with the cases of armed robbery against Chauke, for which his brother had already been sentenced.

News of Chauke’s arrest was met with a huge sigh of relief,

espe­cially among the local farming community.

Mr Stephen Hoffman, chairman of the Soutpansberg District Agricultural Union (SDAU), expressed gratitude towards the Waterval police and the Murder and Robbery Unit in Thohoyandou for their hard work in catching the man “who caused so much damage and sorrow” in the community.

Mr Doors Le Roux, safety chairman for the SDAU and TAU North, also thanked the police. He expressed the hope that the investigating officers will build a strong case against the accused, with the court ensuring that they are sent away for a very long time.

Margaret creates market for local farmers Margaret van Zyl is calling on all farmers from the Soutpansberg area to come and participate in a new initiative – a farmer’s market.

This market will not only aim to provide a selling platform to farmers but will also offer residents the opportunity to buy locally grown produce at one convenient location. The first market has already taken shape and a date has been set for September 17. The market will take place at the Info Centre on the corner of the N1 and Songozwi Street.

A few farmers have already responded to Margaret’s proposal to sell their fresh produce.

“But we need a lot more farmers to participate to make an impression,” said Margaret. Being no stranger to farmer markets, this idea of Margaret’s started

about six months ago when she and her husband moved to Louis Trichardt from Gauteng.

Margaret used to help with the organising of similar markets and thought it an excellent idea to start something similar here.

“It is an excellent way for farmers to sell their extra produce, which would other wise go to waste,” said Margaret.

Farmers who wish to participate can either bring their own tables or just park their trucks and sell directly from them. She has already approached various farmers from the Witvlag and Levubu areas who will offer a great selection of organic vegetables, hormone-free meat, oils and much more. She also managed to get somebody on board to provide refreshments like tea and coffee at the first market.

Depending on the turnout, the market will be held every last Saturday of the month.

VDM say they do monitor the water line The Vhembe District Municipality has been requested to provide an action plan for regular maintenance and inspection of the main water pipeline from the Albasini Dam to Louis Trichardt and surrounds.

The Zoutpansberger requested a copy of the action plan, following an outcry on the town’s water crisis by the vice-chairperson of the Soutpansberg Ratepayers Association (SRPA), Mr Solly Maano, about the chronic water leakages on the main water supply line to town.

Four local municipalities resort under the Vhembe District Municipality, namely Makhado Municipality, Thulamela, Musina and Multiple.

The SRPA thinks it is “high time that the four municipalities should forward an ultimatum to the VDM that each local municipality wants to serve its own communities, and if the VDM cannot handle water (provision), they should hand bulk water supply back to the four local municipalities – plus any monetary allocation received from National Treasury or any other sources intended for bulk water supply.”

With regard to this aspect, no comment was received from VDM.

Met die koerant se besoek aan die mangat het dit geblyk dat munisipale werkers die rede was vir die rivier van rioolwater wat reeds drie strate laer afgeloop het. J3 Hugenootstoet ryg toekennings in Die J3 Hugenootstoet van Mnr. Mike Coetzee het weereens uitmuntend presteer op die jongste skou op Tzaneen.

Tydens die skou op 6 Augustus het diere van die stoet in vyf items drie eersteplekke ingepalm, naamlik eerste vir junior pare interras kampioenskap, eerste junior vroulik interras kampioenskap en ook die algehele interras wenner tesame met die reserwe

kampioen bul en -koei. Die J3 Hugenootstoet se koei, Juandri, was die algehele wenner van alle interrasse wat deelgeneem het en is bekroon met die gesogte Gold Cup. Die J3 Hugenootstoet buite Louis Trichardt is gedurende 2005 met nagenoeg 100 stuks vee deur Mike op die been gebring.

The Save Mapungubwe Coalition has launched its latest video, which was filmed in collaboration with Green Renaissance, to help in the fight against the granting of Coal of Africa Limited’s mining licence outside Mapungubwe.

CoAL recently received their environmental authorisation to mine at their Vele Colliery.

The video follows after mining activities were once again put on hold, due to a successful appeal against the issuing of the mine's water licence.

In this video, Mr Vele Christopher Neluvhalani expresses

his thoughts about the proposed mining activities. Neluvhalani’s ancestors, according to the coalition, lived at Mapungubwe for thousands of years before him.

Neluvhalani believes that on a fundamental level, people have always been connected to the earth. This is visible through the traces they leave behind, like the ancient rock art on the sandstone outcrops in Mapungubwe. He further states that he feels a deep connection to the park, because his ancestors lived there; tied to it, not only by tradition but by a feeling that he has returned home when he stands on top of

the Mapungubwe hill.

Neluvhalani declares that an open-cast mine just outside of the boundaries of the park will change all of this, saying that “it would be an offence to our ancestors to start mining in the area.”

“Once we tamper with Mapungubwe, we will be tampering with the past,” Neluvhalani adds.

He also feels that “everyone in South Africa should be united to help preserve Mapungubwe."

Nominations open for annual awards The Soutpansberg Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that their annual gala evening and awards ceremony will take place on September 17 at Northgate Lodge.

As part of the evening’s celebrations, Navi Redd, as well as DJ Jonty van Rensburg, will entertain guests.

On some of our plantation areas, baboon troops are responsible for damage to plantation trees. Hard work praised on World Ranger Day Letaba rest camp in the Kruger National Park (KNP) was buzzing on August 1, when rangers from all sections of the park got together for World Ranger Day. This is a relatively new event, first observed in 2007 on the 15th anniversary of the International Ranger Federation. It is a day to celebrate the work of rangers and to commemorate the many rangers who have been killed or injured in the line of duty. It was the first time a World Ranger Day event was organised in the KNP. To start off the programme, a team of rangers paraded and performed a drill in front of the Letaba reception office. This was done with true military precision, and reminded the audience that the role of the ranger also includes law enforcement in the parks, not least in the

ongoing rhino war. The team of rangers then led the way to the conference room, where the main programme took place.

The room quickly filled with khaki-clad rangers and other attendees. Rangers from all sections in the park attended and were accompanied by two rangers each. As one of the speakers pointed out, the majority of rangers could not be there as they were patrolling the park.

Derrick Mashale, one of the four regional rangers in the Park, and Ben van Eeden, Regional Manager for the Nxanatseni Region, welcomed the audience and spoke about the significance of World Ranger Day. The managing executive of KNP, Abe Sibiya, was the main speaker of the morning.

He praised the rangers in the Kruger Park and everywhere in the world for their bravery

and their role as custodians of our wildlife, night and day. He paid tribute to the spirit of unity among the rangers in the park and encouraged them to remain in constant communication with each other and to continue to operate as a ranger corps.

Sibiya acknowledged the fact that poaching was the biggest challenge to the rangers at the moment.

Of the remaining 20 000 white rhino in the world, half are in the KNP, and the fight against poaching continues with an intensity never seen before. But Sibiya believes that the KNP rangers are fully equal to the task at hand. At the launch, Ms Marietjie Wentzel, head of the Caring Department, said that people were empowered in the areas of body, soul and spirit.

“Concerning the body, people need food, clothing and to become self-sufficient. We witness miracles. People came in who possessed only the clothes they were wearing. We pray with them and tell them not to worry about provision but to concentrate on sorting out their lives. And the next day, somebody will deliver clothes to us in exactly the right size!” Wentzel said.

Sometimes they get people who need jobs that are in line with their talents and interests and they organise training and placement. “We empower people to know who they are in Jesus Christ and to find their spiritual calling,” said the founder and president of Baird Ministries, Andrew Baird Bezuidenhout.

WRSA asks DA to reconsider moratorium Wildlife Ranching South Africa (WRSA) has asked the DA to reconsider its request for a moratorium on rhino hunting.

This follows the call of Gareth Morgan, DA MP on Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs Edna Molewa last Monday “to institute a short-term moratorium on rhino hunting to allow for an improvement in controls”.

Reacting to Morgan’s request in Parliament last week, WRSA president Jacques Malan asked him to reconsider the request until he has at least consulted the WRSA Board of Directors to help him make an informed decision that would help save the rhino, “based on fact, not fiction, and most definitely not on emotion or political points”.

Malan said although he appreciated Morgan’s concerns regarding rhino poaching, he found his action “very irresponsible as you

have not consulted with WRSA regarding this issue. WRSA is the only national organization representing game farmers, including their game.’

Malan said Government’s current moratorium on the trade in rhino horn is a reflection of an unintended consequence.

“There is an unquestionable causal relationship between the implementation of the mentioned moratorium and the present spate of rhino poaching. A further moratorium (even temporary) on rhino hunting would immediately result in a decrease in rhino numbers while poaching would undoubtedly not only continue, but also increase, given the decrease in numbers of available rhino. The monetary value of the species is the only guarantee for sustainable conservation,” Malan said.

He added that game ranching

was a commercial business and that in any business the financial principle of “if it pays, it stays” applied. “Game ranchers do not get any financial benefits from Government. We therefore have to pay our way.”

He said that with Morgan’s suggestion of a moratorium, the outcome would result in South Africa’s rhino losing their total value. “Breeding in nature results in 50% of the offspring being male and these numbers should be managed accordingly,” he added.

“We have reached the point in this country where we have to work together to save the rhino in which game ranchers have invested millions of Rands to ensure that our descendants will also be able to enjoy the beauty of rhino in South Africa.” (Issued

Ek en die paar vriende wat intussen opgedaag het, sal bevind dat die probleem lê in die drive by wire-tegnologie. Dit het steeds te doen met klagtes dat die versnellerpedaal skielik vashaak en die motors dan onbeheersd op kruisings of allerhande ander gevaarpunte afjaag.

Wat my pla aangaande die hele petalje is dat dit nie normaal vir ons hier in Suid-Afrika is om oor so iets te kla nie. Dit kan dalk aanvaarbaar wees in Amerika, moontlik in Engeland en definitief in Australië, maar nie hier nie. Ek wonder hoeveel van die 9 miljoen motors wat Toyota die afgelope paar jaar moes laat terugroep vir noodsaaklike herstelwerk, van ons landjie afkomstig was? Waarskynlik bitter min.

Gestel vroulief bel my en sê sy het ’n klein ongelukkie gehad met haar Toyota Yaris (dit is altyd “klein ongelukkies”). Natuurlik sal ek baie besorg navraag doen of daar ernstige beserings is en haar probeer kalmeer. Daarna sal ek, amper terloops, probeer uitvind hoe ernstig die skade aan die kar is. Terwyl ek dan reeds in my ge­ dagtes planne begin beraam oor hoe die motor ingesleep kan word, sal ek in my motor klim en begin jaag na die toneel toe.

Daar aangekom, sal sy my meedeel dat die versnellerpedaal (waarskynlik) vasgehaak het toe sy by die stopstraat weggetrek het. Voor haar was (natuurlik) ’n minibus taxi, maar dié het met so ’n vaart weggetrek dat sy nie kon verbysteek nie. Gelukkig was sy nog net in derderat.

Vroulief is ’n erg behendige

bestuurder en normaalweg sal so iets haar nie van stryk bring nie. Sy sal net kalm vir haar vriendin vra om bietjie aan te hang en eers die selfoon langs haar neersit. Daarna sal sy ’n stewige skop mik na die pedaal wat vashaak en so die pro­ bleem uitsorteer. Kom ons gestel hierdie keer was die Pekinesebrakkie egter by haar voete in die pad en dit was nie moontlik nie.

Sy sal dan die alternatief probeer, naamlik die handrem. Na ’n baie aanskoulike handrem-trudraai, gepaardgaande met skreeuende en rokende bande, sal sy kalm omdraai en vir die kinders sê hulle moet nou asseblief luister en hulle gordels vasmaak.

Kom ons neem egter aan hierdie keer het alles nie so vlot verloop nie en vroulief het in die munisipaliteit se blombedding geëindig.

Natuurlik sal dit my skuld wees en ek sal nederig om verskoning vra.

Ek sal klaar die domkrag uit hê en die wielmoere begin losmaak, terwyl ek haar uitvra oor hoe dit presies gebeur het dat die pedaal vasgehaak het.

Nadat ek die motor uit die bedding gegrawe het (en sommer een of twee skaars plantjies in die kattebak gelaai het), sal ek dit met die bakkie uitsleep en, met vroulief agter die stuur van die motor op sleeptou, die pad terug huis toe aanpak.

Anders as die Amerikaners is ons eerste gedagte nie om ons prokureur te bel nie. Nee, eerstens moet ons uitvind wat die pro­ bleem veroorsaak het. By die huis aangekom, word die motor oor die put in die motorhuis getrek en ’n vriend of twee word gebel om te kom help.

Red nou ‘n volk met sulke mans ...

Toyota se eerste “sondebok” was die vloermatjies. Na alle waarskyn­ likheid sal dit ook ons beginpunt wees. Ongelukkig sal ons dit nie kan terugneem na die handelaar toe nie, want dit sou reeds binne die eerste week vervang gewees het met meer behoorlike matte met ’n bietjie “bling”. Die tweede moontlikheid sal dalk die stuk plaat wees wat ons aan die vloer vas ge-pop­ rivet het wat met ’n skarnier werk en voorkom dat vroulief se stilettos onder die pedaal inskuif. Albei hierdie modifikasies sal bekyk, weer bekyk en dan uitgesluit word van die lys van verdagtes.

Miskien moet ek hier bietjie stilstaan en eers verduidelik hoekom al hierdie aanpassings op die oorspronklike patente gedoen word. Dit is weereens die resultaat van ons gene. Ons voorvaders het uit Europa gekom, nie (net) omdat hulle moeg geword het vir die koue nie. Hulle wanderlust-gene het hulle gedwing om nuwe wêrelde te ontdek en nuwe avonture aan te durf. Dieselfde gene dwing ons vandag steeds om nuwe oplossings te soek en nuwe (tegnologiese) wêrelde te ontdek.

As kinders het ons begin en ons fietse aangepas. As dit 24duim wiele gehad het, het ons 26 duim probeer. Ons het tandems, “dubbeldekker fietse” en fietse met waentjies gebou. Toe ons ons eerste fifties gekry het, het ons die enjin uitgeboor en groter silinders ingesit. Ons het trip meters bygesit en die meer avontuurlikes het selfs rondgespeel met die mengsels wat in die vergasser ingegaan het. As dit op enige manier aangepas kon word, het ons dit gedoen.

Terug by die Toyota-motortjie ...

a aanleiding van die onlangse busramp op die berg is dit duidelik dat die verkeersbeamptes en polisie van Musina en Louis Trichardt hul koffers gevul het met omkoopgeld.

As die werk gedoen was by die weegbrug voor Musina en talle groen bome langs die N1 sou die onpadwaardig bus van die pad gewees het.

Soutpansberg vlieg vanaf Ventersburg

Die Soutpansberg Jukskeiklub se spelers het die klub se naam hoog gehou tydens die seisoen se eerste ligawedstryd wat op Saterdag, 30 Julie, in Polokwane gehou is. Die span het die eersteplek ingepalm in die A-afdeling en in die C-afdeling ‘n eersteplek gedeel met Mopanie se klub. Twee van die klub se spelers, Gert Kloppers en Susara Venter, het ook die dubbelspel in die A-afdeling gewen. Voor, van links, is Gert Kloppers en Maud Myburgh. Marx Hokke wen op keer in ‘n Derby-, jaaroud na- sy wenduif die afstand voltooi hulle beurt die Duitse-wedvlug, sionaal- en opewedvlug vanaf met ‘n spoed van 1292.86. Isaac met hul duif se wenspoed van Ventersburg. palm die jaaroud-kampioenskap 1341.64 meter per minuut.

Die Derby word gewen deur Isaac Naudé, nadat sy wenduif die afstand voltooi met ‘n spoed van 1110.83 me- Die Hangklip Posduif Klub se drie wedvlugte en 2de plek met ‘n wenspoed van 1176.82 meter ter per minuut. Hy was vir die naweek het plaasgevind vanaf Delar- per minuut. Amstel Hokke van Fred Fritz is 3de.

Die derde van ons vier Veiling wedvlugte het ook 7de. Elize & Tim eyville - Saterdag die 6de Augustus.

Tahiti Hokke wen die 1ste wedvlug met ‘n ook plaas gevind met Tahiti Hokke 1ste, 5de, 8ste was 2de, 14de en 15de, wenspoed van 1165.40 meter per minuut, met en 10de.

Erna de Klerk 3de, 8ste, Royal Hokke 2de en Mimosa Hokke 3de. Al drie Royal Hokke is 2de en 9de. Mimosa Hokke is 10de en 11de, Tiny de die hokke is van Nico Bezuidenhout en sy Tahiti 3de en 4de. Eric Nel is 6de en Amstel Hokke 7de. wen dan ook die Jaar oud Keur kompetisie.

Ons volgende wedvlug vind plaas op Saterdag Klerk 4de, 5de, 6de en Hokke Met die B wedvlug is dit Dercksen Hokke 13 Augustus 2011 vanaf Vryburg oor ‘n afstand 9de, Braam Naudé 12de, eerste met Royal Hokke 2de en Tahiti Hokke 3de. van 680km. Dit is ook ons jaarlikse Dames Kompetise wat plaasvind. Baie geluk aan al die lede vir T&H Meyer 13de en Die wenspoed was 1168.70 meter per minuut.

Davey Kotze van die Louis Trichardt Stoeiklub het ‘n brons medalje by die SA Presidente Stoei verwerf en daarmee ook sy provinsiale kleure vir stoei. Die Presidente toernooi, waar daar net in gewigsgroepe gestoei word , het op 3 Julie in Polokwane plaasgevind. Davey het aan die O/54kg gewigsgroep deelgeneem.

Huge interest in Tour de Tuli charity challenge More than 300 international cyclists participated in this year’s Tour de Tuli charity cycling expedition, covering Zimbabwe, South Africa and Botswana.

The event took place from August 4 to 8.

The event co-ordinator, Mrs Sue Groatley, told the Zoutpansberger that the annual event, which is in its third year running, was mainly aimed at raising funds for communities living in areas situated within the Greater Mapungubwe Transfrontier Conservation Area (TFCA), a vast safari area jointly shared by Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa. “We had a total of 364 cyclists from New Zealand, the United States, the UK, Australia, Italy, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Singapore.

The cyclists were participating in a charity race under the auspices of the Children in the Wilderness, covering various tourist attractions in Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa within the Greater Mapungubwe TFCA,” she said.

The participants first rode through Botswana before entering Zimbabwe on Saturday and left the country on Sunday for South Africa, which was their last destination. The cyclists were covering national parks within the three countries namely Northern Tuli Game Reserve (Botswana), Tuli Circle (Zimbabwe) and Mapungubwe National Park in South Africa.

Groatley said the cycling event was also aimed at marketing tourist attractions

within the Great Mapungubwe TFCA. On the Zimbabwean side, areas under the Greater Mapungubwe TFCA include Maramani communal lands and Sentinel Ranch, which is home to wildlife, rock paintings and excavations of dinosaur fossils, believed to be more than 210 million years old as well as grain bin shelters from the late Iron Age. “Cyclists had an opportunity to experience the beautiful scenery within Greater Mapungubwe, wildlife and hospitality from the local community members and the event will certainly go a long way in marketing the area as a tourism destination of choice,” she said.
