We are now urging all residents to notify their neighbours if they are away from home. Very soon, we will be launching a street watch, which will serve to secure our village,” he said.

The fight to decide who should be the real leader of the Kutama clan has now moved to the courts. In an affidavit filed in the Limpopo High Court in Thohoyandou, the late Chief Peter Kutama’s only surviving son claims he should be the chief.

Khosi Fhumulani Peter Kutama ruled as chief from 1989 until his death in August 2011. He was the grandson of Chief Makhado Tshilwavhusiku Ramabulana. His father was Tshiungulela Nzobi Johannes Kutama. After the death of Peter Kutama, the royal family appointed his younger brother, Vele Prince Kutama, as the new chief. This decision is now being put to the test by members of the family who believe that customary practices were not followed when the decision was made.

The first applicant in the court case is Aifheli Andries Kutama, who describes himself as a senior member of the Kutama royal family. The second applicant is the son, Mpho Andropov Kutama. In his affidavit, Andries Kutama starts off by explaining that the late Chief Kutama had only one wife, Martha Kutama. Their first-born son, Tshiungulela Ustinov Kutama, died in March 2010. When the chief died in 2011, he left behind his wife and their second-born son, Mpho Andropov Kutama.

Who is Kutama’s Chief?

(From page 1) The Kutama royal family held a meeting on 26 December 2011 to decide who the next chief should be.

Andries Kutama argues that not all members of the royal family were invited to this meeting. "I was surprised when the chairperson of the royal family, Lesley Ramabulana, announced that Vele Prince Kutama was identified as successor to the deceased," he says in his affidavit.

According to Andries Kutama, this decision is contrary to a Venda custom that prescribes that a man cannot succeed his own brother as traditional leader. "... the womb of a woman cannot bear two traditional leaders," he says.

The fact that it took so long for the son to claim the position he believes should be his, is also explained in the affidavit. According to Andries Kutama, they wrote a letter to the Limpopo Premier in September 2012, asking him to intervene. The matter was then referred to the MEC for Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs. In December 2012, they were informed that Vele Prince Kutama was recognised as the new chief. After consultations with some members of the royal family, it was decided to follow the legal route to overturn the decision. It was only in April this year that they managed to collect enough money to instruct an attorney to act on their behalf.

It seems as if the decision to appoint Prince Vele Kutama as chief was based on the fact that the late Khosi Peter Kutama did not have a

dzekiso wife. A dzekiso wife is the one nominated by the royal family to bear a new chief. His only wife, Martha Kutama, apparently did not come from a royal lineage. "Should there have been a need (for a dzekiso wife), the royal family would have proceeded to look for a dzekiso wife even without the co-operation or consent of the ruling traditional leader," Andries Kutama argues.

He reckons that during Khosi Peter Kutama's 20-year reign it was accepted that Martha Kutama was the dzekiso wife.

"Our family knows who the rightful heir is. I think the truth will soon prevail and he will take the rightful place. Mpho is old enough to take his place now,” Andries Kutama said in an interview two weeks ago.

The spokesperson for the Kutama royal family, Vho-Ntanganedzeni Kutama, did not want to expand on the issue and said such matters should not be discussed in the media or settled in court. He said the correct channels had to be followed and it should be discussed during a gathering of the relevant members of the royal family. He said that no single individual person appointed the new chief, as it was the responsibility of the royal family. Ntanganedzeni Kutama explained that, according to Venda culture, the chieftaincy (Vhuhosi) is the property of the family and the chief is the "manager" of that property. When the chief passes on, the property goes back to the family.

"The appointment of the successor will thus be the responsibility of the royal family," he said.

Former policeman receives ten years for murder An ex-police officer was sentenced to an effective 10 years' imprisonment on Tuesday for a murder which took place at his home on the evening of 18 April 2010.

The Louis Trichardt Regional Court convicted Famanda Foster Namuhuchu (34) on a charge of murder after he had shot a close relative, Mr Johannes Risimati Mabunda, at least nine times, first in the head and then in other areas of his body.

Mabunda died in the attack.

It was heard in court during the trial that Mabunda had asked some money from Namuhuchu at a tavern. When Namuhuchu said he had no money, Mabunda then started insulting him and said that the accused was “fat like a frog, and that he would smash his testicles”.

Namuhuchu then left the tavern, but the deceased followed him into his home with a beer bottle. He then smashed the bottle and charged at the accused with a sharp piece of it.

Namuhuchu stated that he then shot Mabunda in self-defence.

The court rejected the claim of self-defence on the basis that the number of shots fired from the accused's service pistol exceeded the idea or intention of self-defence. Then the

court found him guilty on 18 June.

In mitigation, the accused's defence, Adv Ralph Ndleve, stated that the accused was a first offender, was married with two children and was the sole breadwinner. “He also assisted in the burial of the deceased by contributing a head of cattle, R1 200 and a tent, an act which indicated his remorsefulness,” said Adv Ndleve. “I submit that the element of mercy be exercised in favour of the accused.”

He further indicated that the accused's elderly father had since died as a result of trauma because his son had been accused of murder.

State prosecutor Hilke van Rensburg submitted that the accused be “punished for the death of the deceased,” because he had failed to act like a police officer after he was provoked.

“Being sworn at or even assaulted by individuals is part of the daily work of police officers,” she said.

The state prosecutor then read an affidavit filed by the deceased's wife, where she explained that she was now left in the lurch after the brutal death of her husband. “I am physically disabled. My husband, who died like an animal and was left in a pool of blood, accepted and loved me with my disability,” reads the affidavit.

It further reads that she is currently struggling to find another partner, "as most men are prejudiced against disabled women".

In conclusion, the court imposed a direct jail term of 10 years on Namuhuchu.

Correctional centre gives gifts to church and leaders Christ Worship House in Shayandima and senior traditional leaders in South Africa received tokens of appreciation in the form of small, artistic tables for the continued work they are doing in helping the prisons rehabilitate offenders.

Last Tuesday, the church's pastor, Isaac Dagada, accepted 30 units of tables, which were made by the inmates at the Kutama-Sinthumule Correctional Centre. Dagada welcomed the gift and indicated that the products were only a sign of the hard work done by the correctional centres in South Africa.

“We will keep the tables in our offices where everyone, including our visitors, will see them,” said Dagada.

“They are a sign of rehabilitation and the possibility of a crime-free South Africa. If an offender is released with skills from prison, I want to be believe that he or she won’t do crime again.”

According to the prison director, Mr Lazarus Ncongwane, prisoners make tables and other stuff as part of skills acquisition and learning. At the end of the day, the products are normally sold to the prison officials and the generated funds are donated

to needy charity projects in the area.

"We are acknowledging the church's and traditional leaders' work in the outside community and the inside community as well," said Ncongwane. "As the prison facility

A young cattle farmer's happiness and dream of being one of the country's beef suppliers was shattered after his herd of cattle went missing while at a grazing camp late last month.

Mutheiwana Phadziri (29) says that he noticed that his cattle were not in the grazing camp or at home on 24 June and started searching for them. “We went as far as searching for the missing cattle on the farms at Bandelierkop with the assistance of the Makhado stock theft unit, and the whole of Sinthumule and Kutama area,” says a worried Phadziri, "but we found nothing."

Phadziri then reported the matter to the Makhado Municipality's livestock control section

to find out if they had found his cattle roaming near the main road and perhaps impounded them.

The results were negative; his cattle were not locked up at the livestock control kraal.

“I then reported the missing cattle at the Madombidzha satellite of the Tshilwavhusiku police station last week,” he tells. “Even today, as we speak, nobody has come up to say anything about stray cattle.” He adds that his only conclusion is that his herd of cattle was stolen. “I ask the community to help me find my cattle,” he adds. “We want to believe that someone might have seen something. Phadziri explains that rearing a herd of cattle or any other livestock requires a lot of energy and work in a country with low rainfall. First Krone-Endora diamonds sold Canadian mining company Diamcor Mining has sold some of the first diamonds recovered during the testing phase of their Krone-Endora diamond mine in the Soutpansberg-area.

Diamcor recently sold 3 123.32 carats of rough diamonds for a total amount of $425 495.03. The diamonds were recovered in August last year, during the commission of the expanded quarrying and in-field screening operations of Krone-Endora.

Diamcor estimated that about half of the rough diamonds sold were recovered from treating previously processed 10mm material through the new expanded quarrying and in-field screening operations, with the remaining recoveries coming from processing new material up to 12 mm in size.

“The overall dollar per carat achieved for these exercises certainly exceeded our expectations,” said Diamcor’s chief executive officer, Mr Dean Taylor.

Krone-Endora is situated just northwest of De Beers’ Venetia diamond mine. In total, the project covers a surface area of approximately 5 888 hectares. Diamcor acquired Krone-Endora from De Beers, in conjunction with a DMI South Africa subsidiary known as Nozala Investments (Pty) Ltd,

a 100% women-owned black economic empowerment company. Taylor said that the sale would ensure a continuation of the company’s efforts to have the mine fully operational in the near future.

The annual Musina Winter Games kicked off with a bang.

Mayor Carol Phiri officially opened the games before a jubilant crowd of sport lovers at Lesley Manyathela Stadium on Monday.

The week-long games continue until late today (Friday) and the prize-giving ceremony takes place tomorrow (Saturday).

Mayor Phiri said that the Musina Municipality was very proud to host the event, which aimed to discover and nurture young sporting talent.

“The importance of sports in the life of young people is valuable and goes much further than the basic answer that it keeps kids off the streets. It does in fact keep young people off the streets, but it also instills lessons that are essential in the life of a

human being.”

Phiri said thorough sports, people could learn values like discipline, responsibility, self-confidence, sacrifice, and accountability. “It is up to the municipality, parents, teachers, sports teams, and schools to help mould, develop, and instill these qualities into the lives of young people.”

She added that the winter games programme will take a new direction from next year.

“We acknowledge that there have been shortcomings in relation to the running of these games during the past. We have developed a policy that will assist us to run these games according to basic rules. This policy will be implemented in next year’s competitions – where we will focus on young people – especially those

of school-going age.”

She said after the implementation of the policy next year, the municipality should be able to stand up and look back with pride and show the world that it had indeed developed talents like Lesley Slow Poison Manyathela.

“We will also review how we reward the successful teams as from next year as we will be looking at giving out prizes that will add value to the talents of the young participants.”

She said sports provided many positive opportunities for the community, especially school children.

“Good sportsmanship provides guidelines that can be generalized to the classroom and lifelong achievement. It also teaches children to function in a competitive society.”

Strike action averted at De Beers mines Strike action was averted at De Beers’ three diamond mines in South Africa after a wage agreement was reached between the mining company and the National Union of Mine Workers (NUM) on Friday.

This according to a press release issued by De Beers Consolidated Mines (DBCM). DBCM employs approximately 2 550 people working at their three South African mines, namely Kimberley, Venetia (north of the Soutpansberg) and Voorspoed (Free State). The NUM represents 1 300 employees who fill the Bargaining Unit jobs at these operations. DBCM met with the NUM at the Council for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration

(CCMA) on Wednesday, 3 July.

This meeting followed a dispute declared early in the negotiations by the NUM on 12 June. The CCMA was, however, unable to mediate the dispute and issued a certificate to this effect on 3 July. That meant that the NUM was able to give the company 48 hours’ notice of its intention to embark on protected industrial action or the company might give the NUM 48 hours’ notice to lock out union members.

On 5 July, DBCM again met with the NUM and a wage agreement for 2013 was reached. The terms of settlement apply to jobs in the A, B and lower C band bargaining unit. The employees in these jobs will receive a 9% in-

crease effective from May 2013.

The two parties also agreed to phase out the few (25) remaining A Band positions which still exist at the Kimberley Mines operation and at the DTC in Kimberley. As DBCM does not operate hostels, both parties also committed to engage around housing matters and to develop mechanisms which effectively promote home ownership for employees in the ‘Housing Gap market’. This will assist employees who fall between the Government RDP housing schemes and the formal home-loan market.

Amidst the negotiations, mining operations continued without interruption at all three of De Beers’ diamond mines.

Government plans to sell rhino horns Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa believes the government can stop rhino poaching by a once-off sale of rhino horns.

Molewa made this announcement during a media briefing on Wednesday, 3 July. According to Molewa, the South African government has approved the development and submission of a proposal to the 17th conference of parties to CITES (Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora), which is scheduled to take place here in South Africa in 2016.

This proposal will try to lobby for the ban on international trade in rhino horn to be lifted to allow a once-off sale of South Africa’s rhino horn to address the poaching bloodbath in the country. “The establishment of a well-regulated international trade could assist in this regard, if implemented in conjunction with all the other interventions to curb rhino poaching,” said Molewa. “South Africa cannot continue to be held hostage by the syndicates who are slaughtering our rhinos,” Molewa added.

Molewa said South Africa had the ability to make rhino horn available on the market without impacting on the species, by means of a regulated trade system.

Deputy Director General of Biodiversity and Conservation of the Department of Environmental Affairs Mrs Fundisile Mketeni added that the aim was to sell horns collected from natural fatalities.

The one-off sale model is envisaged along the lines of four CITES-approved auctions of elephant ivory from Botswana, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe during 2008 to accredited traders from China and Japan. Mketeni said South Africa had about 16 437 kilograms of stockpiled rhino horn, while 2 091 kilograms were in private hands.

Members of CITES will vote on South Africa’s proposal in 2016 when it has been submitted by Molewa’s department. At the time of Molewa’s press conference, a total number of 461 rhinos had been poached in South Africa for their horns.

In the meantime, the Limpopo Police announced on Monday that they had arrested three suspected rhino poachers at a private game farm near Phalaborwa. One is a 50-yearold South African and two were unidentified Mozambicans.

Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi, the police acted on a tip-off that the suspects were on their way to shoot and kill the rhinos for their horns. The situation, said Mulaudzi, was monitored and the suspects were spotted in their Ford Fiesta on Sunday near Hoedspruit. The police’s tactical response team and stock theft unit immediately closed in on the suspects and arrested them. During the arrest, an unlicensed hunting rifle and 9mm-pistol were found in the suspects’ possession.

Mulaudzi reminded the public that reward money of up to R500 000 can be paid to members of the public who can provide information that will lead to the arrest and conviction of suspects involved in the act of rhino poaching or dealing in rhino horns.

Thohoyandou resident Ms Khola Ledwaba (left) won R50 000 in the 2013 Omo Door to Door Challenge. The campaign will award R925 000 worth of bursaries and cash prizes. Ledwaba is one of the R50 000 winners, which comprises a R10 000 bursary and R40 000 cash which she can spend to her heart’s desire. She answered the knock at the door to meet up with Nkanyiso Bhengu and won the bursary for taking the OMO Stains Challenge. The mother of three children, aged 6, 2 and 18 months, Ledwaga is very excited about her windfall. “The cost of living and education is high. Six years of selfless sacrifice, dedication and hard work among Muslims in Thohoyandou paid off when a state-ofthe-art mosque they were building was finally opened.

The Masjid-E-Chistiya Ashrafia in Thohoyandou Block F, whose construction started in 2006, was opened with pomp and ceremony at the weekend. The mosque, which is believed to be the second largest in Africa, was built through own contributions by the community and was officially opened by Sayyed Hasan Askari Ashrafi, Sayyed Hamza Ashrafi and Cllr Tshifhiwa Dali, the acting Vhembe district executive mayor.

Hasan Ashrafi is the highest Muslim spiritual leader from Chistiya Ashrafiya international.

The opening was witnessed by councillors from Thulamela, officials from Vhembe district, police officials and many community members. The ceremony was hailed as a uniting factor in a community that is forging unity between Indians and the local community of Thohoyandou, coming together to celebrate the opening.

Rafiq Lakha, a member of the executive at the mosque, said conditions at the old mosque, which is adjacent to the new one, were not conducive to good worshipping. “The building was small and could not accommodate all of us, and there were no facilities. With the ever-increasing Muslim devotees, we felt we should build a better mosque and it started earnestly in 2006.”

He said the mosque will seat more than 1 250 men and has adequate ablution. It is also unique as it has a floor area that can seat 400 women, which the old one did not have.

Youth to take education seriously When the mother of a 56-year-old PhD graduate addressed a large crowd of well-wishers about the difficulties and challenges of taking her son through school, everyone was moved.

“I had to cut the grass to sell for profit and mould clay products to pay my son’s school fees,” recalls the lady, Vhakoma Vho-Alidzuli Mufamadi.

Mufamadi was speaking during the celebration when her son and local headman, Godani Samuel Mashau, successfully obtained a PhD in English Studies through the University of Limpopo. The purpose of the event, held at Mavhina at Ha-Mashau-Bodwe on Saturday, was to encourage the youth within the village to take education seriously.

There was an atmosphere of excellence and motivation in the rocky village as the column of graduates dressed in academic regalia marched from the local church to Nwaridi Secondary School.

Mashau completed his matric in Prof TD (Derrick) Mashau also encouraged the 1976 and went on to achieve a BA youth to emulate Dr Godani Samuel Mashau degree at the University of Venda when he said “studying has never killed a (1985), majoring in English and Tshivenda; a BA Hons degree in person”.

African Languages ( Unisa, 1990), a BA Hons in English (Univen, 1995) and an MA degree in English Studies at the University of Limpopo in 2005

before obtaining his PhD. For his PhD, he produced a dissertation titled Myth as a tool of literary, socio-economic, cultural and political liberation in selected works of Naguib Mahfouz , Ngugi wa Thing’o and Zakes Mda. Mashau has had a deep love for English studies from a very young age. “Studies in English have empowered me not only to teach it but to give guidance in the teaching of the English language with ease,” said Dr Mashau. “Research has enabled me to influence and guide both teachers and learners on research and writing skills.”

Mashau started working at Vhafamadi Secondary School in 1980, and became a principal of Davhana Secondary School at the young age of 27.

Ever since then, he has been active in the national examination board as a sub-examiner.

Differrent stakeholders within the community, including friends, family members, representatives of the church, the school and the youth, wished Mashau well.

The community leader, Vho-Simon Magoro, said the community was very proud of having a doctor of English studies among them. “He has set himself a milestone and our children will have to look up to him for guidance and motivation,” Magoro concluded.

The juvenile inmates in the Makhado Correctional Service Centre closed Youth Month in style during an event held at the centre a fortnight ago. They participated in several traditional dances during the event, while their choir also performed.

Mr Tshilidzi Masikwa of the Thohoyandou Victim Empowerment Programme (TVEP) encouraged the juveniles to ensure that people with good influence surround them at all times. He also said that the future of a person was often a result of the decisions he made and he encouraged the prisoners never to let their situations deprive them of a wonderful future.

tre said that it had become necessary to interact with different stakeholders in order to make them aware of how they were operating. “We have a mandate to look after offenders and to rehabilitate them while in prison.

We should also work out the best way to assist ex-prisoners to make the best of their lives after their release. This is a mammoth task and we feel we will not succeed alone,” he added.

He emphasised that prisoners were normal “people like us. They have made their mistakes, but paid their dues. Let us regard them as reformed beings and help reintegrate them into society. It is our responsibility as a community to see this programme succeeding. Together, we can always do more,” he added.

Vhutsila Books to be used at schools The national Department of Education has recommended that a local publishing company, Vhutsila, be used to produce the material for the Tshivenda language studies in the new curriculum (CAPS) next year. The series of grammar books titled Mbeu ya Luambo (The

seed of language) will be used in grades seven, eight and nine.

The company’s founder, prominent Tshivenda author, TV and radio drama actor and stage writer Rudzani Tshianane, says they feel greatly honoured by this announcement. He says their books have unpacked the new syllabus in a user-friendly and informative manner. “As an infant, blackowned but very reliable and professional publishing company, we are proud to have achieved our desire and set goal,” he said. According to Mr Tshianane, their books were produced by a team of experts. “Those who teach Tshivenda will love our books. The well-known author, Mudzulathungo Mmbi, is the leading author of our grammar series,” he adds. According to Mr Mmbi, his goal is to preserve the Tshivenda language, which is gradually disappearing. Mr Mmbi is also an internal moderator of the CAPS exam and he says that it is important to try and ensure that the language is written and spoken correctly. Two Limpopo residents lead arts forum Two personalities from Limpopo are at the helm of a national forum for the development and empowerment of artists, models, actors, presenters and dancers, established during a meeting early last week in Pretoria.

Project manager Freedom Boikanyo, with assistant project manager Kotie van der Merwe, disclosed details of their ambitious project during an interview in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) last week.

“Our mission is to unlock the doors for upcoming artists, with a vision to assist them to the upper levels,” says Freedom.

They envisage that the national dance, modelling, music and acting (DMMA) forum will ensure that upcoming artists will get the necessary recognition among all the relevant authorities and structures.

“It can change a lot of lives. The organization stands for development and empowerment and for the creation of managerial structures and processes, which will reflect the demographics and values of the wider society.

“The forum is pro-transformation and we envisage to be the foremost organization in the

development of managerial leadership and advancing development transformation of artists, actors, models, presenters and dancers in South Africa.”

Representatives from various towns in various provinces were previously recruited and activated for the founder meeting in Pretoria.

The official launch of the forum will take place later this year, but Freedom and Kotie gave a glimpse of some of the upcoming events to be organized by the forum. These include competitions to find The Face of Limpopo and The Face of Gauteng during November and culminating in The Face of South Africa, early in December this year.

Manchester United scrape through to the quarter finals Ngwenani Manchester United booked a place in the quarterfinals of the Mulindavhathu Soccer Challenge by beating Mudaswali United Brothers 1-0 at the Khubvi Benjies grounds on Sunday.

United Brothers had nobody else to blame for the defeat, as they squandered numerous scoring opportunities. Manchester were out of touch in the opening minutes. United Brothers capitalised and put more pressure on their defence. It took Brothers 24 minutes to realise that it was not their day. They were awarded a penalty after Khuliso Tshivhengwa was brought down within the penalty area. Fhulufhelo Tshikalange suffered the pain of watching his volley going a little wide, much to the disappointment of the team’s fans.

United Brothers continued to create more dangerous moves from behind,

but their strikers went on shooting aimlessly at the goal mouth.

The keeper of Manchester United, Ndamulelo Ratshikombo, denied United Brothers a sure goal in the 39th minute. Unarine Rambuda tried his luck from outside the box and Ratshikombo palmed the ball away for a corner kick. Manchester United came close to scoring two minutes before the break. Thinavhuyo Khuvhe went loose from the left corner and unleashed a ground cutter. The ball hit the woodwork and bounced outside the field of play for a goal kick.

The second half saw United Brothers wasting more scoring opportunities. The goal which separated the boys from the men came seven minutes towards the final whistle.

The Seventh Day Adventist Church recently extended its caring hand and donated food and clothes to orphans and vulnerable children around the Mpheni area. Ms Rineth Thanyani, head of the women´s group in the local Seventh Day Adventist Church, said they were touched by the plight of the poor children and decided to do something. She said the donation was not only meant for providing the children with meals. "We will also assist them to go to school."

Masters soccer teams can still register Although the registration window for new members is still open, the first league matches in The Best FJR Funerals and Finance Masters’ League were played last weekend.

According to league organiser Mr Fhatuwani Rananga, seven teams have already affiliated to the newly formed league. They are Folovhodwe, Madimbo, Mutale, Tshitanzwavhuyo, Sigonde, Mukovhawabale and Manenzhe. The results of the opening

league matches are: Folovhodwe Masters 1, Tshitanzhwavhuyo Masters 1; Madimbo Masters 2, Sigonde Masters 0 and Mutale 0, Mukovhawabale Masters 0.

Rananga appealed to the other teams which are interested in joining the league to phone him on 0825301952. According to him, the registration window for new members will remain open until the end of this month. The registration fee is R600.

Rananga further revealed that

a committee to run the league was formed during a meeting at the Muswodi Post Office last Saturday.

The members of the committee are: Messrs Elijah Khwareli, Jerry Rabuli, Patrick Shongane, Jerry Muroga, Jerome Nethavhani and the founder member, Mr Fhatuwani Rananga.

The much-decorated musician and choral music composer and conductor, Shalati Joseph Khosa (67), who was regarded as one of the most prolific composers in Southern Africa, is dead.

His death has left his family and the community shattered.

Khosa, whose compositions have been performed by several mass choirs, died at the Phalaborwa Medi Clinic on July 3 after a short illness.

Family spokesperson Nkhensani Maluleke, née Khosa, said the death of the icon left the family devastated. “We take solace in the fact that he has lived life to the full and has done his best for anyone in the family,” she said.

She said the memorial service will be held at the Phalaborwa community hall on Friday.

Khosa was one of the most highly respected choral musicians in the country. He was the first recipient of the Limpopo Premier's Anglo-Platinum Award when this honour was bestowed on him at the Transnet Massed Choir Festival in 2006. He was also honoured with a choral music festival at Phalaborwa Hall by the SABC, in conjunction with Munghana Lonene in Polokwane.

In 1993, the National Symbols Committee at the World Trade Centre chose his song Vun'we (Oneness) as an alternative anthem for South Africa.

Songs by this multi-talented man are prescribed on a yearly basis for music competitions. In the 1980s, Khosa composed a song which was sung in both Shangaan and English, called Afrika Lontshwa (The New South Africa). The song was sung at the Roodepoort International Eisteddfod, where he conducted an international mass choir singing his song.

Khosa held a bachelor of musicology and a master’s degree in musicology from the University of Pretoria.

He also held a bachelor of arts degree from the University of South Africa, a teacher's diploma from the University of the North, a certificate of music and a French language certificate from the Louisiana University.

He had composed hundreds of songs after being commissioned by companies and church groups.

Among his proud choral works was a song he was commissioned to compose by South African Airways on Ubuntu (humanity) with special reference to the treatment of people on aeroplanes.

Another is a song he composed to mark Eskom's 75th Anniversary in the 1980s. Sasol also commissioned him to compose a song which he used for a conductor's workshop organised by the company.

When the Kruger National Park celebrated 101 years in 2008, Khosa was commissioned to write a song that would be sung by the KNP choir for the occasion. Khosa composed the song The Great Wilderness Great, which is still popular.

“He conducted several music workshops around the world. Although he had retired, he still got invitations to hold workshops or adjudicate,” said Maluleke.

Khosa will be buried at Mabayeni family burial site on Saturday after the funeral service, which will be held at the Assemblies Church of God at Merwe A Village in Malamulele.

Limpopo ANC boss Falaza Mdaka has also sent condolences to the family.

“The death of this icon has left us the poorer and it will be hard to replace him,” said Mdaka.

Food and blanket donation for Mandela Day Zamenkomste United the new champs AFB Makhado, under the leadership of acting officer commanding Colonel Paul Madimabe, received a major donation last week of several tons of food and blankets for distribution to needy people and the elderly on Mandela Day. The generous donation of bags of maize meal, crates of cooking

oil and margarine, boxes of soap, as well as blankets, was resourced at M Premjee and Son and facilitated by Makhado goodwill ambassador Mr Amie Chhaya.

The donations will be stored temporarily at the base and then distributed to needy people on 18 July (Mandela Day) at various places.

More than 17 projects have been identified by AFB Makhado in partnership with Chhaya for possible support in the form of renovations, cleaning and donation of food.

The areas to receive support are Elim, Waterval, Matoks in Botlokwa, Makhado town including Tshikota, Sinthumule, Kutama and the Witvlag area.

Zamenkomste United beat their younger brothers, Zamekonste FC, 1-0 in the final match of the winter tournament at the Tshiozwi grounds on Sunday.

FC were strong at the far back and in the striking force department, while they lacked

cohesion in the middle of the park. The balls that threatened the defence of FC were ballooned from behind.

Eye Operations

More sponsorships needed for Madiba’s Day The Zoutpansberg Private Hospital in Makhado (Louis Trichardt)’s ambitious Mandela Day project on 18 July is around the corner, but sponsorships are still needed.

The hospital’s plan was to provide 10 free operations to 10 patients in need of urgent eye surgery. They indicated that an 11th patient has since been selected and that this patient’s costs now need to be covered. The patients are all from different racial and cultural backgrounds and have already been identified. These operations will be performed free of charge by two eye surgeons, while the services of the anaesthetist are also free. The hospital itself will supply the theatre and theatre personnel at no cost.

A major stumbling block was the cost of the initial 10 theatre packs needed for the operations.

In this regard, Alcon Pharmaceuticals has donated R27 750

to help pay for the 10 in-theatre Phaco packs at a cost of R2 770 per pack. In addition, Clouds’ End and Mountain Inn Hotel have offered to sponsor the meals of the patients, surgeons, anaesthetist and theatre staff. The two hotels will also be sponsoring the hospitality tent for the patients’ caregivers, as well as accommodation for the doctors and caregivers who need to sleep over for the follow-up clinic the next day.

The hospital also indicated this week that the money needed to cover the theatre and ward medicine has been donated by the Louis Trichardt Rotary Club.

More sponsorships are, however, needed for the 11th patient.

Persons wishing to contribute financially to the project are urged to do so. “You can donate any amount, even if it is just R10.

We’ll add all the donations and purchase the necessary items

from the total amount,” says Ms Anneke Stroebel of the Zoutpansberg Private Hospital. She adds that the public is also welcome to support the project by sponsoring their services, such as helping out by providing transport for the patients to and from the hospital.

She has indicated that donations need not necessarily be made before 18 July but can still be done at the end of the month or whenever is convenient. Food sponsorships are also welcome.

guess it was not easy to arrive at decisions to disband the Limpopo ANC and some ANCYL Provincial Executive Committees.

This warrants the rebuilding of structures from scratch, which require a lot of energy, human and financial resources. The disbandment was very necessary given the fact that the province had a leadership crisis, which manifested itself through tendencies of factionalism and chauvinism. We witnessed programmes of the people’s organisation being abandoned to pursue personal gains, thereby hampering the unity in the ANC and derail the delivery of service to our people.

The situation was worse at branch level in that real cadres of the movement were sidelined and the membership forms of those who do not agree with the leadership, thrown away, which defeats the ANC objective of growth. It is a pity that, in the process,

some cadres got discouraged and decided to be passive passengers in a bus, which they best know its destination which was very unfortunate as the movement can only be corrected from within.

There is no vehicle for transformation to a true non-racial and united society fighting to uplift the quality of life of all South Africans, especially the poor.

In the run-up to the national conference, we have seen the ANC Limpopo PEC and the ANCYL displaying conduct very foreign to the movement, including insulting leaders of the ANC, because they had contrary views on leadership preferences.

Mangaung was not the first and the last and comrades must understand that people will always have different opinions on who can best lead the organisation at any given time. In fact, that is what has made the organisation strong the way it is.

It is wrong and uncalled for to bulldoze branches, thereby making pronouncements on their behalf, as to who must lead the ANC at any given time, purging comrades and running away with branch packages, because they are likely to nominate contrary to the wishes of the leadership. Prophets of doom wrongly prophesied the collapse of the ANC after Mangaung and perceived contestation for positions as divisions.

To the contrary, the ANC emerged more victorious and united with a concrete programme of action to accelerate the delivery of services to our people.

Limpopo will always be the home of the ANC, because people love this glorious movement that liberated them.

There is no doubt that in the 2014 general elections, even the turnout will increase in favour of the ANC for an overwhelming victory.

Comrades must not take the recent disbandment of structures personal including a call for the ANC in Vhembe Region to follow suit, as it is a necessary intervention for the ANC to cleanse itself at this phase of the election campaign.

The ANC-led government has made a lot of strides in the past 19 years to uplift the quality of life of our people and a lot will still be done, guided by the blueprint for development over the next years adopted at the ANC National Conference.

Electricity for the Manyuwa community

A new addition to Afro-soul music

For the almost-forgotten community of Manyuwa near the Timbadola plantation, a ray of hope is starting to shine. This isolated community will soon have electricity, and an access road to the village is in the planning stage.

When Mirror visited the area about a month ago, an electrical contractor, Munyemela, was busy erecting poles and connecting the cables. Residents of the village who had to rely on candles and paraffin lamps welcomed the new developments, but still feel that they have been left behind as far as development is concerned. The village still has no access roads, no pipelines to bring water, no health facilities, no schools or places of recreation.

Children have to travel almost 10 kilometres to attend primary and secondary schools in the nearby villages. When it rains, they cannot cross the river.

A resident, Ms Grace Nemakhavhani, said they were forced to collect water for household purposes from a nearby river and spring. This river is polluted and, at any given time, cattle and goats can be spotted drinking from and defecating in the water. “No one wants to get involved with our problems here.

We are also appealing for assistance in erecting a bridge across the river which separates Shanzha and Manyuha," she said.

The other major need in the village is a clinic to assist when people are ill. According to Ms Nemakhavhani, the community members rely on the services at the Phadzima clinic, which is some 17 kilometres away.

In a country where everyone professes to be a musician or singer but rushes to dish up shoddy projects with the sole intention of financial gain and making a good name, Vanessa Mphanama’s voice is heartwarming and a comfort that artists still exist among the people.

The 27-year-old singer, popularly known in music circles as Vanempha, is a new addition to the Afro-soul genre whose debut album is continuing to receive massive acknowledgement in the province. “I love music so much that I live on it,” she reveals and adds that she was born in the deep rural village of Ngwenani ya ha Mapholi, where she currently resides.

Listening to Untold Story is like unpacking the dimensions of a talent whose entry into the music industry was long overdue. She has ar unique voice, and she doesn't try to imitate the artists who came before her.

Vanempha only released her album a couple of months ago, after distributing an offering of her single to radio stations for sample purposes. Her single, Phala-phala, was dedicated to Phala Phala FM and instantly became popular with listeners.

“I believe that I am talented; even my fans say so,” she adds.

Rradio stations were inundated with calls from fans asking about the availability of the album of the woman who sang so well, and that was when Vanempha decided to go back to the studio to record more songs, which eventually made up Untold Story. “I was raised by my grandmother,

Thulamela Municipality's spokesperson, Nndwamato Tshiila, said the installation of electricity was almost finished and the community of Manyawa would soon enjoy the fruits of democracy like others. Tshiila said the municipality was building an access road to Manyuwa village and, before long, people would be able to reach Thohoyandou and other towns without problems.

Perhaps this singer ought to show her gratitude to Hani Mutele, the man who mixed and mastered her songs. Mutele is a keen, talented and reputable engineer from this district.

Vanempha is a movie actor and comedian, and is also a script writer, whose short drama will be aired soon on Phala Phala FM. The drama is titled Riswiswini Lihulu.

Vanempha is a newcomer to Tshivenda Afrosoul with her unique voice.

The younger man got angry and started insulting his father, during which an altercation ensued between the two. The court was told that Allan head-butted his father and then continued to punch him all over the face.

The father reported the matter to the police, leading to his son’s arrest.

The dedication ceremony was attended by many members of the community, neighbours and fellow congregants from the Lwamondo-Tshifulanani Nazarene branch where the house owner, Rev Lethabo Muthubi, is pastor. The service took place on Sunday afternoon.

God to help them build a home and felt that it would be the best thing for them to give thanks for the completed house. “Traditional rituals are held when people thank their ancestors for their successes. As Christians, we felt that we had to do it in full view of the people. We are children of the mighty God who protects and provides for his children,” said Lethabo Muthubi.

He said they wanted to share their happiness with all the people.

Muthubi said when they started, they did not have money as they were only getting enough for them to survive as a family, but

out of that nothing God helped them build the house. “We are very grateful and we would like to thank God for this house. In this house, we see the grace of God.” In dedicating the house, Rev Malindi Mudau, the Zoutpansberg District Superintendent of The Church of the Nazarene, urged all to put God first and make him the foundation in all they do. “We are just happy that you thought of God as your foundation and security. Masakona win Univen pre-season contest Univen FC are still battling to come to terms with the 0-2 defeat they suffered at the hands of Masakona FC in the final of the Univen Pre-Season Winter Tournament at the Univen Stadium on Saturday.

Realising that their fitness was below par, Masakona slowed down the tempo of the game.

Instead of forcing matters within the first 20 minutes of the game, Univen adopted a wait-and-see style of play. Masakona gained momentum as the game progressed.

The referee, Mr Eric Munyai, booked Ishmael Mabape of Univen for a late tackle on Vuledzani Khomola in the 29th minute. The sharpshooter of Masakona, Gift Ramaxwaila, caught the Univen keeper, Tiego Mpoti, napping and beat him with a long-range half-volley.

Phathutshedzo Matodzi of Univen was lucky to escape with yellow after tackling Eugene Mulaudzi from behind. The score was 1-0 at half time.
