Young star dies during soccer match

A 16-year-old soccer player, Andani Kutama from Benny’s Sports Academy in Tshiozwi, collapsed and died during a match in the Metropolitan SASFA U-16 Cup national finals at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Durban last Thursday.

Benny’s played against Freedom Park of North West and, in the 13th minute, Andani collapsed. The ball was out of play at the time and there was no prior contact with any other player, said the president of the South African Schools Football Association (Sasfa), Mr Mandla “Shoes” Mazibuko.

He added that the referee immediately went to Andani and checked his condition. He then called the paramedics. They took him off the pitch on a stretcher. “They tried to revive him, but when they realised that Andani was not reacting to the treatment, they took him to the Prince Mshiyeni Hospital in an ambulance. He was declared dead at the hospital,” Mazibuko said.

“It’s very strange and we cannot understand it, because there was no contact with any player. He just collapsed,” Mazibuko added. “We are deeply saddened by his death and send our condolences to the family. He lost his life tragically. May his soul rest in peace,” he said.

According to him, Sasfa sent counsellors to assist Andani’s teammates and support staff. “They are understandably devastated by this loss,” added Mazibuko.

“I wish to extend my deepest sympathy to the family and wish them strength during this extremely difficult time,” he said Andani’s father, Mr Frank “Jabu” Kutama, said the incident had left them with many questions unanswered. ”It is very difficult to accept the death of a healthy child

whom you last saw a few days earlier. We sometimes just feel it could not have happened to our child, but we know it was his day.” Kutama said the family was heartbroken. He said the family had accepted that it was the will of God and were looking to God for comfort.

“There are things that we as human beings cannot change. We all have to accept those things and go on with life,” he said.

The president of the South African Football Association (Safa), Mr Kirsten Nematandani, said that his association was deeply saddened by Andani’s death and he sent his condolences to the family. “News of this nature is heartbreaking and our thoughts are with the family and fellow team members,” Nematandani said.

According to Nematandani, the news of the boy’s death sent shockwaves through the sporting world. He also mentioned that Andani’s death was a huge loss, “and to repair it will not be easy. His tragic death left A grieving mother: Ms Mokgadi Kutama. us with deep pain, grief and anguish.”

The head coach at Benny’s Sports Academy, Mr Justice Matloga said that Andani was always positive and told lots of jokes. “This is a huge shock and totally unexpected. We mourn his death.” Matloga added that they had lost a young, energetic player who was enjoying football. He added that the whole school was in deep mourning and the mood was very sombre. “The whole school will have to undergo counselling.”

According to Andani’s roommate and captain of the team, Mbulaheni Mukwevho, it will be difficult for the team to continue after the death of their star striker.

“Every team that clashed with us in the past always had a problem containing Andani. Local soccer fanatics will remember him for his dribbling skills, which made him an instant hero in the area.” Mukwevho said his friends would always remember Andani as he was always joking with every player.

llow me to take this opportunity to congratulate the Musina Municipality on the manner they handed Luruli’s issue. (Abram Luruli resigns as MM; Limpopo Mirror 14 September 2012, page 3).

Truly speaking, you indicated to our ordinary residents of Musina that indeed, you have zero tolerance to corruption. It is a pity that our vulnerable residents were always used in bogus marches organised by forces aligned to this gentleman about issues such as “expensive municipal

tarrifs,” while the real issue was a demand to reinstate this gentleman.

The issue that I do not understand is that how can we allow Luruli to leave like this?

It is my opinion that Abram Luruli must be charged. Our municipality is in a state of collapse as a result of this man. I believe that this gentleman did not do this alone.

There are those who assisted him within and outside the municipality to achieve this goal of looting our municipal resources.

Malamulele deserves its own municipality

Here are some examples that Vembe is (as was meant to be) a Venda stronghold.

Giving Malamulele a municipality does not imply that we do away with all cooperation with people from Thohoyandou, as we’d still be in the same district.

I mean, the district is appropriately called Vhembe (not Vembe), there’s nothing cooperative in that. In only a few reports do they mention that Thulamela was home to Venda and Shangaan people, and to show that they don’t know us or are not interested in us, they call us Shangaans!

All the other times it’s Vendas, forgetting that the Rozvi are the Valoyi people.

If the people of Thohoyandou want to cooperate, they can do it from the district municipality level, or provincial level, or business-wise.

Malamulele Town has been reduced to a village. Malamulele is not even on the map.

Heck, I can’t even add my town on Facebook! Now I find myself trying to decide whether I’m from Thohoyandou or Giyani!

Vendas are claiming the Zoutpansberg area, with

statements like the Mangombe (Madzivhangombe) mountain in Giyani is Venda territory. I mean, a swa ha lavi rivoni.

I was counting the 107 villages in Malamulele, and somewhere around 90, I couldn’t decide whether Khakhan’wa is in Malamulele or Thohoyandou! It’s obviously in Malamulele, ka Mavambe, but just because it’s mixed I thought, the Vendas will never agree to this being true. Villages are now prefixed with “Ha-”. I mean, really now!

It’s plausible that Malamulele could have 500 000 inhabitants. You only need an average population of 5000. The villages are large from the grouping of people (called malayini). Though the Malamulele area is large, the settlement in the homesteads is not sparse at all. Areas of different chiefs are meeting up. The Mbhalati, Mudavula, Mulamula and Mukhomi areas are almost one. New villagesize sections (miganga) are created every day.

Gumbani, Phaphazela and Mukhomi are under one chief, Hosi Mukhomi, but Phaphazela and Gumbani are in a different ward. How do you separate a chief from his people?

At the end of the day, it’s not about what makes sense, it’s about who has more power or force to swing things in his way.

“CA must accept the name change”

T

he CA must just accept that in a democracy the wishes of the majority will always prevail. No sane person can dispute the fact that Makhado town is situated in Vendaland, so it is only proper for this town to be named after King Makhado.

Instead of the CA wasting money on unnecessary court challenges, they should be working towards uniting the people of this town.

I’m happy that the majority of white residents of Makhado town have accepted this name

Luruli and his friends must be brought to book. As the Musina community, we need answers from him.

The way I see it is that if people are living in an area, they should use it to uplift themselves. There’s nothing logical about uplifting residents from Venda.

They have an elephant and pot (khuwani) statue in Thohoyandou. That money could’ve been used for something more important. There’s been hearsay that most of the malls and community buildings in Thohoyandou were destined for Malamulele, but something went horribly wrong along the way! I’ll cite Hollywood, though I don’t really know where it is.

Pupil (13) killed by bakery truck A 13-year-old girl was killed when she was knocked down by a bakery truck at Bokisi, Chavani, near Elim last Thursday morning.

Patricia Mbedzi had just came out of a taxi from N’waxinyamane and was crossing to the other side of the road, when an oncoming bakery truck hit her. She was a resident of N’waxinyamane and it is said that she had come to Bokisi to collect her clothes at her grandmother’s place.

According to the spokesperson for the Waterval police, W/O Risimati Masonto, Patricia was certified dead on the spot. “We are investigating a case of culpable homicide and a 31-year-old man might appear in court soon,” he added.

Man in court for attempted murder A 53-year-old man appeared in the Tshilwavhusiku Magistrate’s Court on a charge of attempted murder a fortnight ago. The incident allegedly took place at Gogobole Village at around 19:00 on 20 September.

Lucas Thonga allegedly arrived in a car and parked in front of the yard before entering the

complainant’s shack. He allegedly demanded R300 that the complainant owed him.

According to the spokesperson for the Tshilwavhusiku police, Const Munyadziwa Thenga, the other man refused to give Thonga the money. Thonga then allegedly drove away, only to return with a pistol. He is al-

leged to have fired two shots at the complainant. “Fortunately, both bullets missed the target and the complainant was finally rescued by his in-law,” said Const Thenga. The case against Thonga was postponed to 30 October for further investigations. The accused resides at Tshiozwi village in the Sinthumule area.

Eight men arrested following spate of safe/ATM bombings

The five were charged with murder, armed robbery and the illegal possession of explosives. The other three suspects had yet to appear in court by the time of going to press. They are believed to be the leaders of the gang.

Tlou, Mgwenya, Hadebe, Manyusa and Tsheko were denied bail and will have to appear in court again on 12 October, when more cases are expected to be brought against them. The whole gang was also expected to appear in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday on charges of illegal possession of firearms.

In the meantime, the gang is still being profiled, as according to Mulaudzi, it is suspected that they form part of a bigger gang responsible for various other violent crimes throughout the Limpopo Province, and Mphasha Manyusa possibly in other provinces (32). as well.

Eight men believed to be responsible for the spate of safe-bombings, as well as various other daring robberies in Makhado (Louis Trichardt), have been arrested the past week.

A gang of seven suspects were arrested on Sunday after they tried to flee from the police. The Makhado, Bandelierkop and Mara police joined forces to chase the gang down, after they tried to skip town via the Vivo-road. According to local police spokesperson Capt Maano Sadike an eight suspect was arrested on Monday.

The arrest follows information that the police’s Crime Intelligence and Hawks units had about the gang. They were allegedly planning to rob yet another business in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) on Saturday morning.

Three firearms, with their serial numbers filed off, as well as two vehicles — a Toyota Tazz and Mazda Laser, allegedly used during the crime spree — were recovered during the arrest. Police have also confirmed that ATM breaking tools and explosives such as gels, detonators and battery packs were seized as evidence.

According to provincial police spokesperson Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi, initial investigations have revealed that the gang was allegedly responsible for more than 15 cases of the bombing of safes and ATMs, a series of armed robberies as well as a murder. The murder case refers to the one in which the 34-year-old Mr Prince Mbedzi, a security guard from Gwala Security, was killed during a botched robbery at Eden Oil on 8 September.

Five of the eight suspects appeared in the Louis Trichardt District Court on Monday.

New state-of-the art school for Lukalo village Pupils, staff and the surrounding communities at Lukalo in Tshaulu are on cloud nine, following the official opening of a R33 million school in the area.

Pupils at Milton Mpfumedzeni Secondary School were left stranded when a mysterious fire gutted part of the school in 2007. The education department provided mobile classrooms, which were used for years. On Tuesday, the whole

community, political and traditional leaders and the senior district manager of the Department of Education in Vhembe, Dr Gerson Rambiyana, converged at the school to witness the historic occasion.

The state-of-the-art school comprises modern classrooms, laboratories, an administration block, hall and a computer laboratory. The school can accommodate more than 900 pupils.

Education MEC Dickson Masemola said the new infrastructure at the school should inspire and encourage both pupils and teachers to do better in their work and to improve the school's results. “I know you were learning under difficult conditions. You continued to do well despite the odds; the new school is payback for the hard work you are doing,” he added.

He urged pupils to work like slaves in order to live like kings and queens in the future.

Thovhele Gole Mphaphulu, who is also very passionate about education, praised the government for the facility. “We need development in our area and it will only be possible if more of our children are educated,” he said.

Tshepo Motloung, chairperson of the Learner Representative Council, said he was happy that promises for a new school had become a reality.

Young girls urged to abstain from sex A local religious leader has urged young girls to preserve the Vhavenda culture “of virginity testing, as a way of abstaining from sex before marriage”.

The call was made by Apostle Ramudzuli Lehangwa of the Christian Worship Centre in Shayandima on Sunday, when he rewarded nine young girls who were tested for virginity and found they had not yet engaged in sexual activities. The nine young girls, aged between 14 and 20, are members of his church and received gifts and certificates as a way of encouraging them to have pride in themselves. “It is part of our culture and we are proud of the fact that they are not engaged in sexual activities before mar-

riage,” said Lehangwa.

According to him, young girls volunteered themselves to be part of the virginity-testing ceremony and professional nurses attached to Tshilidzini Hospital were invited to conduct the testing. Christian Worship Centre also celebrated its 16th anniversary in style by inviting other pastors and community members. “We also care for more than 120 vulnerable children in and around Shayandima as part of our poverty-alleviation programme,” Lehangwa added.

He also mentioned that the church hoped that the virginity testing ceremonies would encourage other young girls to abstain from sex before marriage to retain pride in themselves and

preserve their culture.

One of the girls who was tested, Elelwani Ndou, said that she was over the moon when the church recognized her and others for being faithful and rejecting sex before marriage. Ndou (20) is in Grade 10 at Sam Mavhina Secondary near Thohoyandou and said the result of the test meant that she had brought “great pride” to her family and church.

“Many young girls are engaged in sex with older people because of money. Some end up dropping out of school or being infected by HIV/Aids and they eventually die young,” she added.

She urged other girls to take care of themselves and their bodies and to “go to church in order to get the real way”.

Mphaphuli supports King Toni as leader The Mphaphuli royal family, one of the contenders for the Vhavenda kingship, dropped a bombshell when they publicly announced their support for King Toni Mphephu as leader of the Vhavenda people.

The announcement was made last week after a family meeting, which insiders say nearly ripped the family apart. It is suspected that some said that they should appeal against the court’s judgement, while others said that they should just accept the outcome.

In an exclusive interview, the incumbent of the Mphaphuli dynasty, Thovhele Gole Mphaphuli, told Limpopo Mirror that it was one of the most painful decisions the family had to make. “Yes, we have been mum since the Pretoria High Court made the ruling that Toni Mphephu is the king of the Vhavenda nation. We have been giving the matter a lot of careful thought and it has not been easy for us a family, but we finally came to a decision that we should accept the judgement as it is.

“We can now safely say that we have come to the conclusion that we should support Toni as king. We are not going to pursue the matter any further and we have laid it to rest,” he added. He confirmed that the decision was a bitter pill to swallow and that not everyone in the family was comfortable with it.

The Nhlapo Commission announced two years ago that Toni Mphephu is the rightful heir to the Vhavenda kingship. After the announcement, several high-ranking royal families, which included the Vhangona, Mphaphuli, Tshivhase and Ravhura, took the matter to court.

The Pretoria High Court made a ruling this year and confirmed Toni Mphephu as king of the Vhavenda.

After the ruling, the contending families kept quiet over the decision of the court, but during a recent celebration to thank all who had given

King Toni Mphephu support during his court battle, many chiefs and senior chiefs from all over Vhembe were present.

Conspicuous by their absence were all the contenders to the throne.

Reacting after the announcement and on behalf of the Vhavenda king, Toni Mphephu, senior advisor to the king Mr Jackson Mafunzwaini said the king had made a pronouncement during the celebrations at Dzanani to invite all the Vhavenda to come on board and make their contributions towards the development of the Vhavenda nation.

“The king is still making a call to those who are left that they are welcome to come and make a meaningful contribution towards the development of all the Vhavenda,” said Mafunzwaini.

Jail time for two border robbers Two men linked to a notorious armed robbery syndicate were each sentenced to an effective five years in jail for robbing two illegal immigrants of R720 and a cell phone at gunpoint.

The suspected syndicate is operating along the Limpopo River and targets border jumpers.

Alfred Makaye (20) of Zaka village in Masvingo and Viosi Kapuru (21) of Bepura village outside Beit Bridge pleaded not guilty to charges of armed robbery, but were convicted

by Regional Magistrate Joseph Maveza a fortnight ago. They were sentenced to eight years in jail, of which three years were conditionally suspended for five years. The prosecutor, Mr Johannes Tlou, said that on 23 May at around 06:00, the victims went

to the Limpopo River intending to cross into South Africa illegally through an undesignated entry point. They were spotted by the two accused, who were part of a group involving two other accomplices still at large.

The group, which was armed with machetes, knives and a pistol, confronted the two complainants and demanded money amid threats to kill them. One of the gang members, who is still at large, fired a single shot with a pistol in the air to scare the victims.

They searched the victims and robbed them of R720 and a Nokia cell phone before they fled into the bush. The victims reported the matter to the police, who then accompanied them to the scene.

while the police were at the scene, Makaye and Kapuru spotted the officers, who were in plain clothes. They approached the detectives, armed with machetes, and demanded money, prompting the detectives to retreat since they were not armed.

However, the detectives went back to the scene two days later, armed with pistols and reinforcements from the police’s dog section, the court heard.

They set a trap for the suspects and, upon realising that they had been trapped, Makaya tried to attack one of the police officers with a machete. The police officer opened fire, shot him in the left thigh and arrested him.

Kapuru managed to flee and he was arrested two days later.

Stray leopards terrorise village

Stray leopards from the Kruger National Park have descended on Tshitulipasi village outside Beit Bridge, where they are reportedly killing livestock.

When Limpopo Mirror visited the area last week, villagers said they were losing their livestock to leopards, which were mainly targeting donkeys and calves. “Our livestock are attacked by leopards while grazing in the bush and that is really an issue of grave concern to us. Last week, I lost three calves and I suspect they were attacked by leopards from the Kruger Park,” said Mr Peter Mbedzi.

Another villager, Mr Allan Chauke, said he had also recently lost three donkeys and four calves to leopards.

“We are appealing to the relevant authorities to address this problem as a matter of urgency, as we continue to lose our livestock,” he said.

Mr Enock Ndou, a local ward councillor, also confirmed the latest development. “The problem of leopards was brought to my attention and I have since compiled a report, which I will table before the full council meeting. I have since informed our natural resources department about the issue,” he said.

A 41-year-old Tshitereke-born author, who won the first prize in the annual Maskew Miller Longman Literature Awards, walked away with R10 000 and a certificate. Hednar Rudzani Tshianane, a teacher who teaches business studies and mathematical literacy at Silemale Secondary School, wrote the awardwinning drama in two weeks.

The unpublished manuscript bears a metaphorical title, Murunzini wa Mulilo (Under the shade of the fire). It tells the story of a young boy, Vhulenda, who is lured into sexual slavery by a woman much older than he, Vho-Mercy.

She offers him money and buys him expensive clothes as a reward for sexual pleasures that she gets from him.

According to the author, Vhulenda grows into liking the sexual activities in which he engages himself with the woman. The problem starts when he pursues new relationships with girls of his age, because the woman who has held him in sexual bondage becomes jealousof his relationships. It hurts Vhulenda so much that he decides to tell his long-suspicious sister everything and that is how he manages to free himself.

“The book is about something common,” says the author. “People will often choose not to speak about this kind of Hednar Rudzani abuse, but it happens Tshianane. among us.”

This prolific author of at least 18 published books has won numerous literary competitions before, including the K. Sello Duiker Memorial Literary Award in 2009, and the Limpopo Department of Sports Arts and Culture’s literary competition, where he won the first prize at least four times in a row. In 2008, the Thulamela Municipality awarded him with a big trophy for his continued contribution to the development of the arts and the Tshivenda language.

Tshianane is a writer who holds the view that a writer does not hear, see and know something for nothing. Any writer will analyze and ask questions about what he or she sees. “A writer thinks about things that occupy his mind. The more you read, the more you grow and become wise,” he reveals his secret. “Good writers are the best readers.”

Tshianane further expressed his disappointment about the declining number of people who read books today. “I speak more especially of our own Tshivenda books,” he says. “Another issue is that there are not enough young upand-coming writers.” He is quick to add that the problem might be that Tshivenda writers are not getting the same recognition as their English counterparts. This writer feels that the government should also find means to award and honour authors publicly, so that even the youth can be encouraged to become authors and write in their African languages.

“I am a responsible husband and father of two kids, Vhutsila and Muhali,” he says proudly. “I also thank my wife, Shumani, for giving me the space to write.”

Aluwani saw her mother being struck with the iron bar repeatedly all over her body and feared that she might die at any moment.

The intruders reminded the two women that Aluwani’s father was a taxi owner, and then they demanded the money from the taxis’ daily savings. “We told them that we had last stayed with my father some ten years ago and that we no longer live with him,” she choked in her voice. “But they continued hitkm) of space.

adamant that there was money in the house and they wouldn’t leave the place without having been given money. Joyce, feeling dizzy and weak after she had bled profusely, remembered that there was some stokvel money in another room.

Joyce felt that it would only save their lives if she gave the robbers the available money.

She took them to the next room, where four minors were sleeping, but some of them had been awakened by the noise in the house.

She handed R28 000 in cash to the men and they fled with the money. The money belonged to the stokvel of which Joyce is a treasurer. After the robbers had fled, Aluwani tried phoning her father on his mobile phone, but the phone only rang several times without an answer.

On her second attempt, the phone was off.

The family then decided to go to knock at their neighbour’s door and ask for help.

When they were inside the neighbour’s house, they called the police and both mother and daughter were rushed to Tshilidzini Hospital for medical attention.

Aluwani was treated on her head and arm and released the following morning. Joyce was in the hospital until Monday, 8 October, when she was discharged.

“Centrepiece of economic development” New banknote road shows underway The MEC for Economic Development, Environment and Tourism, Ms Pinkie Kekana said her department would work tirelessly to ensure that the Musina to Africa Strategic Supplier Hub Initiative (MUTASHI) becomes the centrepiece of economic development in the province.

She addressed councillors and the management team of the Musina Municipality during their annual strategic planning session at Tshipise Forever Aventura, during the weekend.

“In line with the expansion of border trade and the commercial opportunities regarding economic development in Musina, this development will allow South Africans and the neighbouring countries to build

a strong economic base in Musina. This will create prosperity for the South African border region and strengthen sustainable trade that will benefit the country. Since border trade is one of the successful factors in Africa’s rapid economic growth, it should be a greater development pattern for South Africa too,” she said.

The envisaged MUTASHI project was announced by Government after Musina was declared as one of South Africa’s best northern growth points, which introduced new vitality into the economic development of South Africa as well.

“This initiative communicates in practical terms the partnership between the government and the business sector to provide

sustainable job opportunities to our people. This is the era of job creation and we will continue to engage all role players to make sure that we grow a sustainable economy in Limpopo. This initiative will provide a large business opportunity for South Africans and it is a major boost to the Limpopo provincial economic development,” Kekana added.

She requested the municipality to plan effectively and review its organisational structure to make sure that they will have skilled people when MUTASHI becomes a reality. During the strategic planning session, senior municipal officials presented their plans before the council. Mayor Carol Phiri said the session was organised to define the municipality’s future strategy. “It was our opportunity to analyze our strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.

Divuse Project urgently needs funds

Ex-offenders welcomed back

Divuse Multipurpose Project and Home-based Care, a nonprofit organisation that has been in the forefront of the struggle to empower and improve life in their community, continues to make an impact in society.

The organisation started 11 years ago and is based at Maniini, just outside Thohoyandou. The main aim of the project is to serve the community, even though it is not funded. It looks after 30 disadvantaged children and 15 elderly people, whom they visit on a daily basis.

The Thohoyandou area management of the Department of Correctional Services and parolees joined church members at the Victory Fellowship Christian Centre in Tshikwarani in the Kutama area a fortnight ago (30 September).

The purpose of the event was to celebrate Corrections Week.

A large group of ex-offenders was welcomed back into society by the church. The congregation expressed their need to socialise with the parolees, not just once but continually. Pastor George Ramatshimbila gave a moving welcome and sermon. He encouraged the congregation to allow the spirit of goodness to work in them, so that they could have a clean conscience and arrive at the full understanding and meaning of unity and

It also keeps the local youth off the streets by involving them in activities like dancing and singing.

At the weekend, the organisation held its general meeting and discussed its progress as well as the challenges it faces in running its day-to-day programmes. A new youth dance group, Makhwaya, which specialises in Xitsonga dances, was also introduced.

Among the challenges, funding topped the agenda. "We have ambitious plans. We are planning to build a multipurpose centre

here that will serve the whole community. We would also like to develop the talents of these youths,” said Ms Elisa Nemavhulana, one of the founding leaders of the organization.

Nemavhulana said that they were able to run the organisation for 11 years from their pockets and with some help from Good Samaritans. "We have not received any funding since we started. Despite the odds, we have been able to develop a youth group that specialises in dancing zwingondo. Some of these youths are now working and we have been able to guide them and show them the right way in life. They are now responsible citizens in the country,” she added.

“We need more help, especially to nurture and develop our new dance project. The youth need exposure.

They have performed at small functions and we hope they will be performing before a big audience in the notso-distant future,” said Nemavhulana.

“Prophet” acquitted of rape charges A 30-year-old self-proclaimed prophet of Beit Bridge, who was being accused of raping and impregnating a local woman during a cleansing ceremony at Makakavhule village, was acquitted of the charges.

Thembelani Dube of Makakavhule village outside Beit Bridge had pleaded not guilty to three counts of rape when he appeared before a local regional magistrate, Mr Josepha Mabeza, on Friday. The charges were withdrawn, due to a lack of evidence.

In acquitting Dube, the court noted that the complainant and her mother had not given credible testimony in court. According to the evidence given by one of the state witnesses, the complainant was in love with Dube and the

responsibility.

"Allow love to rule over you and in your relationships with other people," said Ramatshimbila. He then made a public call for people to lead a clean and blameless life, so that even when they are asked to speak about what they do when they think people are not watching them, they might be able to give an honest, shameless answer.

"As we celebrate Corrections Week, we feel that parolees should be welcomed into fellowship in churches and even tithe like all the people. My appeal is that parolees must not be treated like entities who are separated from the main events

of social life." According to Mudimeli, the rehabilitation and reintegration of ex-offenders into society is the responsibility of the church and the community. "If we continue to stigmatise the ex-convicts and prisoners because of what they had done in the past, we're getting nowhere in terms of building our society."

A parolee who had served more than 15 years in jail, Mr Victor Ratshibaya, thanked the correctional services and the community for allowing the parolees to interact with the community in a conducive environment like the church. "Mudzimu u ya tshila (God is alive)," Ratshibaya told the community.

Mentally ill patient is still The mentally ill Mr Robert Marandela (48) of Tshakhuma Luvhalani disappeared from his home last Friday.

According to his brother, Mr Thomas Marandela, they started a search for him and also contacted all their nearby relatives, "but all our efforts yielded no results," he said.

The matter was then reported to the police, but he has not been found yet. He added that the disappearance of his brother was putting a big strain on the family. "Please, my brother, come back home.

He said the disappearance had cast a dark cloud over the family.

A taxi was involved in an accident with a sedan on Thursday last week. It took place near Belkhado farm, along the Madombidzha road, at around 12:00. All 15 occupants of the taxi, including a fatigued pregnant woman, were treated at the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital and released on the same day.

The community of Maphophe in Limpopo Province has finally given praise where it is due. It recently celebrated the life of the founder of the community, Mr Jan Cukumetani Maphophe, 65 years after his death.

Speaking at the inaugural Maphophe Day celebrations two weeks ago, Maphophe’s grandson, Pastor Thomas Maphophe, who heads the Pentecostal Assemblies Church of God and is a globetrotting pastor who trains church leaders throughout Africa,

said that his great-grandfather was passionate about development. “The son of Sundhuza Mhinga, he was sent by his father to this area in 1895. He made it one of the most developed areas, and he also built schools,” said Maphophe, who added that the area of Maphophe boasted many educated people.

He said that his grandfather had participated in the Second World War, but when other war veterans were honoured, he had already passed away. “He had many wives but his many chil-

dren were united,” said Maphophe, who has planted churches in Liberia, Nigeria and also trained church leaders in different African countries. Limpopo’s MEC for safety and security, Florence Radzilani, praised the community for documenting their history.

She said that different cultures were not meant to separate people. “We must unite because we belong to a victorious African block that conquered many battles,” said Radzilani, who was accompanied by Thulamela Mayor Grace Mahosi.

Thumbs up for traditional Xibelani designer Thoko Mkasi of Mavalani village has proved to many people that laziness never helps anybody, but only brings misery and poverty.

She is now the designer and manufacturer of traditional Xitsonga designer outfits, xibelani, and sells it to schools, churches and even to the public.

She did a course in fashion design at Sasakani College in 2002.

After the completion of the course, she landed herself a job to make school uniforms and other garments. “Before I obtained the qualification and the vision to start with this job, I was only earning a small amount of money compared to the effort I put into my work,” said Mkasi.

In 2005, she went to Giyani township and found a site and started to design the traditional Xitsonga xibelani garments.

“I never buy a school uniform for my chil-

dren, as I am able to make it,” she proudly added.

If her business continues to grow, she plans to start with a sewing project to help the impoverished youth to learn to sew.

“Many people around Giyani, Malamulele, Phalaborwa and Tzaneen come in numbers during

various parties to place orders,” she added. She is also proud of the beadwork she is producing for her customers.

Thoko encourages young people to learn to use their hands to produce important commodities to fight unemployment and poverty.

Six goal thriller A final-minute goal by Sameeng Doutie saw Supersport United share the glory with Black Leopards when they played to a 3-3 draw in their Absa Premiership League match at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday.

Although the home side was already 2-0 down 19 minutes into the game, they did not lose hope.
