Still no explanation for three strange lights in evening sky - most likely suspects could be Chinese lanterns

Strange lights remain mystery By Andries van Zyl Strange lights in the night sky over Makhado (Louis Trichardt) last Friday evening had many wondering what they were, but as with all of these “paranormal” sightings, explanations varied, with no conclusive answer. Resident Asterix Aucamp was on his way home with his family at around 21:30 when he spotted two strange lights in the night sky above him, moving in an east/ west direction. He stopped at the Songozwi Street/ N1-intersection, took out his cellphone and started recording the two lights. Moments later, a third light approached from the same direction. “‘Weird, daddy!’ was my son’s reaction,” said Aucamp. He said his first reaction was that they could be Chinese floating candles, because they flickered red and yellow, like fireballs. “But then it seemed as if they came to a standstill, changed direction and started moving again. It looked like controlled movements!” said Aucamp. He added, however, that he could hear no engine

noise emanating from the floating lights. “I don’t know … maybe some things can’t be explained. Who knows, was it ET?” said Aucamp. Aucamp’s “UFO” sighting was brought to the attention of Mr Kos Coronaios of the Soutpansberg Astronomy Club. He in turn gave the information through to two of his colleagues, Dr Claire Flanagan (head of the Johannesburg Planetarium) and Mr Greg Robberts, retired satellite-tracking expert from Cape Town. Flanagan’s response was that the lights might well have been Chinese lanterns. Her advice was to try and find out whether some kind of ceremony took place that evening in the area that would have required the launching of such floating candles. “... maybe they do come with little rocket engines these days ...” Flanagan said. Robberts, however, was a bit more sceptical. “Chinese lanterns - I guess that is a possibility, although I’m inclined to think it’s not the case. I don’t know much about these things, having never seen one other than on TV and videos on YouTube - so

I am not an ‘expert’ on how they look and behave or how common they are,” Robberts said. Robberts said it also did not sound like a satellite. “... they don’t change direction nor suddenly change speed, so satellites/ re-entries etc. can be ruled out,” Robberts said. The next question, Robberts said, was whether the lights could have been UFOs. “I don’t think I believe in such – that is, not the little green men or blonde Venusians etc. I’ve looked at a lot of videos posted to YouTube on UFOs etc. I have some friends who are convinced such exist, but I am rather sceptical although I cannot rule out something totally,” Robberts said. He added that his experience with the general public was that they were rather ignorant of what happened above their heads and often mistook natural events for UFOs. “Anyway, this all boils down to the fact that I have no explanation for what was seen, so I guess one can put it in the category a real UFO in the literal sense - an unidentified flying object,” Robberts said. AfriForum says court order is a “landmark victory”

AfriForum has described the North Gauteng High Court’s granting of a court order to force the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) to, among others, supply the residents of Makhado (Louis Trichardt) with water, as a “landmark victory that has set a legal precedent for other municipalities across the country to use.” The civil rights organization obtained a court order against the VDM on 2 October, with the VDM being ordered to pay the costs of the court application. “This court order forces the Vhembe Municipality to do their work. AfriForum will monitor the adherence to the time frames set out in the order and keep the pressure on the municipality. The order sets a national precedent for supplying water and service delivery in general as the order commits the municipality to report progress from building infrastructure, to making running water available…” said AfriForum lawyer Werner Human. According to the court order, the test results on the five newly drilled boreholes must be forwarded to the AfriForum attorneys by 17 October. The sixth borehole has to be re-drilled. By 30 November, the boreholes have to be equipped with pumps and coupled to the reticulation network and start supplying water. Pending the completion of the borehole scheme, town residents should receive water on a daily basis between 04:00 to10:00 and between 16:00 to 20:00. By 12 October, an implementation plan for clearing the vegetation along the route of the Albasini pipeline will be supplied and thereafter monitored on a daily basis. By 15 December, VDM will also have to inform residents of the impact of the borehole scheme on the water supply. AfriForum Louis Trichardt chairperson

Wally Schultz said that they had started out with seemingly small steps that can be enforced and pave the way for more steps in the process to have the water supply restored. “We have recourse to instant action for contempt of court by individuals, should the order not be followed to the letter,” Schultz said. Although AfriForum “has the muscle to force change and monitor progress”, Schultz made an urgent plea for realistic expectations. “The court order is not a magic wand that will instantly get the water flowing in our taps … The task is enormous: 20 years of neglect has destroyed the now crumbling infrastructure of our town. We will now ensure that it is repaired but have no illusions; it is a massive task,” Schultz said. Even more massive is the water crisis in the surrounding villages. The dire situation of residents of the Vyeboom, Nzhelele and Madombidzha areas caught the attention of Ms Meisie Kennedy, DA member of the provincial legislature, who accompanied a protest march to the Makhado Municipality on 5 October. The memorandum they presented to the municipality demands that urgent steps be taken to ensure that every member of the communities under the municipality has access to water and that the sewage infrastructure be fixed. In the meantime, a spate of theft of cables and motors occurred at some of the boreholes supplying water to the part of town west of the N1. On Monday this week, the spokesperson of VDM, Mr Matodzi Ralushai, was taken on a tour to the vandalized boreholes. None of the VDM’s technical department was present. The boreholes are situated on both sides of the Madombidzha road in the Rietvlei area. Theft had taken place at five of the nine

boreholes inspected. At three boreholes, the motor as well as the cables had been stolen. Two of the boreholes, both on the southern side of the Madombidzha road, were properly secured in the sense that the pump was encased in cement and closed with a strong steel lid. At each borehole, an orange steel structure could be seen, containing expensive equipment that should give an alert when the boreholes or pumps are tampered with. The system has apparently not been kept in working order. Aghast at the theft and vandalism, Ralushai said that these operations were performed by a very-well-organized team. He said that security measures at boreholes would have to be financed by Vhembe. At the time of going to press, the case numbers and replacement costs were not yet available. AfriForum regards security of the town’s water supply infrastructure as an urgent priority. “The casual approach to security that has bedevilled water and sewerage installations can no longer be tolerated,” said Schultz.

Mindset Learn (DSTV Channel 319) will be setting up televisions in each classroom for students to watch the learning channel throughout the lectures. Students will be offered the opportunity to join classes at a nominal fee and will be given study material and stationery to assist them in their preparation for final exams through the spring school initiative. Every learner will receive a complimentary PC Training & Business College kit, including essential stationery, a T-shirt, water bottle and PC Training & Business College bag. Molly Ramnundlall, senior director of PC Training &

Business College, has expressed her enthusiasm for the programme, saying “It gives me great pleasure to announce this joint venture initiative with Mindset Learn. New banknotes road show on its way The month of October marks the start of provincial road shows by the South African Reserve Bank (SARB), aimed at educating and raising public awareness about the new banknotes which come into circulation before the end of the year. The communication campaign around the forthcoming new South African banknote series, depicting and honouring former President Nelson Mandela, was launched in early September by Reserve Bank Governor Gill Marcus. Retail malls, transport hubs and pension pay points in urban and rural areas of the country’s nine provinces are some of the

touch points that have been earmarked for the public outreach programme. “We want to reach every South African through this communication campaign. The SARB road show will be in the Eastern Cape region from 2 October to 3 November 2012 to familiarise communities with the new banknotes prior to circulation,” says Hlengani Mathebula, Head: Group Strategy and Communications of the SARB. The road shows will include demonstrations with the new banknotes and informative material about the new banknotes will be made available. “It is our responsibility as the Reserve Bank to protect the credibility of the South African currency. This

can only be done by making sure that the public know their money and its distinct features really well,” says Mathebula. In the Vhembe District, road shows will be held in Thohoyandou and at the South African/ Zimbabwean border post at Beit Bridge. On 7 November, there will be a road show at the Thohoyandou Taxi Rank from 07:00 until 10:00. On 8 November, the road show will be at Mvusaludzi Mall from 09:00 until 17:00. The two planes were used in a flypast as part of the base’s 25th anniversary celebrations, but both planes were back at the base at 20:00. The video clip was taken at 21:30 and with only two planes used, that still didn’t explain the third light. It would seem that residents should come to their own conclusion as to what the lights were. The likely suspects seem to be Chinese lanterns. An Internet search revealed that 5 October was one of a couple of Chinese National Day celebration days and the Soutpansberg does host a small Chinese community. have been arrested the past week. A gang of seven suspects were arrested on Sunday after they tried to flee from the police. The Makhado, Bandelierkop and Mara police joined forces to chase the gang down, after they tried to skip town via the Vivo-road. According to local police spokesperson Capt Maano Sadike an eight suspect was arrested on Monday. The arrest follows information that the police’s Crime Intelligence and Hawks units had about the gang. They were allegedly planning to rob yet another business in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) on Saturday morning. Three firearms, with their serial numbers filed off, as well as two vehicles — a Toyota Tazz and Mazda Laser, allegedly used during the crime spree — were recovered during the arrest. Police have also confirmed that ATM breaking tools and explosives such as gels, detonators and battery packs were seized as evidence. According to provincial police spokesperson Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi, initial investigations have revealed that the gang was allegedly responsible for more than 15 cases of the bombing of safes and ATMs, a series of armed robberies as well as a

robbery at Eden Oil on 8 September. Five of the eight suspects appeared in the Louis Trichardt District Court on Monday. They were the 25-year-old Mcabangweni Mgwenya, Moloto Tlou (38), Kabelo Hadebe (24), Mphasha Manyusa (32) and Robert Tsheko (30). All five men were dressed in designer T-shirts and pants, and were seemingly in a very good mood, making small talk with the police’s television camera crew before their court appearance. The five were charged with murder, armed robbery and the illegal possession of explosives. The other three suspects had yet to appear in court by the time of going to press. They are believed to be the leaders of the gang. Tlou, Mgwenya, Hadebe, Manyusa and Tsheko were denied bail and will have to appear in court again on 12 October, when more cases are expected to be brought against them. The whole gang was also expected to appear in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday on charges of illegal possession of firearms. In the meantime, the gang is still being profiled, as according to Mulaudzi, it is suspected that they form part of a bigger gang responsible for various other violent crimes throughout the country.

Meer en meer moeg om vir lug te betaal

Me. Elisa Lambani (regs) van Thsikota wys haar munisipale rekening vir September, waarop staan dat sy in totaal vir die maand 137 eenhede water gebruik het. “En daar was nie eers water nie,” sê Lambani. Sy word R765 aangeslaan vir watergebruik. By haar staan mnr. Lucky Marubini, wat deel was van die protesoptog na die munisipaliteit op 5 Oktober.

Mnr. P.W. du Toit van Makhado (Louis Trichardt) by die watermeter wat hy by sy watertenk geïnstalleer het. Hy vergelyk die lesing van die munisipale meter met sy eie meter. “Ek kan nou met 100% sekerheid sê hoeveel water ek gebruik. Na een week het my meter 8 gewys , terwyl die munisipale meter al op 23 gestaan het. Na twee weke het my meter 14 gewys en hulle meter trek toe al by 46,” sê Du Toit.

“Ons is moeg daarvoor om vir lug te betaal,” is ‘n frustrasie wat al hoe meer deur inwoners uitgespreek word. Die Du Toits van Bredastraat in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) het ‘n videogreep gemaak van hoe die munisipale meter hardloop, terwyl die grond behoorlik dreun wanneer die munisipale water besig is om aan te kom en slegs lug deur die pype stoot. Die aankoms van die September munisipale rekening het ‘n groot skok vir mnr. PW en me. Annatjie du Toit ingehou. Daarop word aangedui dat hulle 104 eenhede water gebruik het. Vir die afgelope vier jaar was hulle eenhede nog altyd minder as die helfte van hierdie rekening s’n. So het hulle 42 eenhede in Augustus 2008 gebruik, 33 eenhede in November 2009, 34 eenhede in Mei 2010 en 40 eenhede in September 2011. “Ons het die afgelope ses maande nie ‘n druppel munisipale water vir ons tuin gebruik nie, sê PW. Hy het ten einde laaste vir hom ‘n watermeter by sy watertenk geïnstalleer en hy vergelyk nou die lesing van die munisipale meter met sy eie meter. “Ek kan nou met 100% sekerheid sê hoeveel water ek gebruik. Hulle behoort die stukkende pyp te herstel en die bome reg bo hulle pyp te verwyder. Die munisipaliteit kom wel uit, maar los nie die probleem op nie,” sê PW. Inwoners van Tshikota sukkel ook om hul probleme uitgesorteer te kry. Me. Triegies is naaswenners by Aardklop Louis Trichardt Hoërskool se toneelgroep eindig algeheel tweede tydens die Clover Aardklop Nasionale Kunstefees in Potchefstroom met hul toneelstuk, Atlas, en wen daarmee R10 000 vir hul skool. Die toneelgroep het Atlas twee maal opgevoer voor die amptelike prysuitdeling op Vrydag, 5 Oktober. Nico Scheepers, wat die toneelstuk geskryf het, wen die prys as beste regisseur. Dit is die derde agtereenvolgende

jaar dat Nico met hierdie prys wegstap. Triegies is aangewys as naaswenners, met slegs die Hoër Meis ieskool Bloemhof met Spektakel wat hulle getroef het. Die vorige twee jare het die Triegie-toneelgroep eerste in die land geëindig. Daar het landswyd 154 skole aan hierdie ATKV Tienertoneelkompetisie deelgeneem. Hoërskool Parel Vallei was derde met Die oop geheim, Eldoraigne vierde met Die koffer en Brack-

enfell vyfde met Sjuut! Die Triegie-toneelgroep is in verskeie kategorieë vir pryse genomineer. Van die beoordelaars het dus gereken dat hulle daardie pryse kon gewen het. Hierdie nominasies sluit in Arno Venter as beste akteur, Larissa Venter as beste aktrise, Anton Pretorius as beste akteur in ‘n ondersteunende rol en die toneelgroep vir beste ensemble spel en beste hantering van tegniese aspekte.

October is the month that the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) is visible in our evening skies. The galaxy can be seen with no optical aid and it is 2.5 million light years away. So how far can you see? It is once again time for the Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror’s very popular calendar photo competition. The region’s photographers will have until 31 October to submit their entries. Prize money totalling R6 000 is up for grabs, with 12 winning pictures to be chosen for each of the year’s months. Winning entries will be published in an A2-format 2013 calendar, which will be used by the Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror for marketing purposes. The calendars will also be sold to the public at a minimal fee.

Only high-resolution photos of subjects unique to the Soutpansberg and surrounding areas will be considered for the competition. Wildlife photos are welcome, although the newspaper group would like to see more entries depicting the region’s cultural heritage, its people and landscape. The competition is limited to five entries per photographer, which should preferably be submitted in digital format. Cellphone or postcard-size photos will not be considered for the competition. All entries must clearly indicate who the photographer

is, their contact details, where and when the photo was taken and what camera was used. Although technical aspects such as the quality and sharpness of the photo will be taken into account, the photo should, however, only make for a nice picture. Each of the 12 winning photographs will be bought from the photographer at a price of R500 per photo. Name change event “outrageous”- SRPA The name-change launch of the Makhado Municipality was met with “the utmost disappointment” and described as “outrageous behaviour” by the Soutpansberg Ratepayers Association. The Chairpersons Association (CA) on their part responded with letters issuing stern warnings to put the changes of the town’s name on signage, sign boards, route descriptions and letterheads on hold until the courts have given a final decision. “The Chairpersons Association is in the process to file an application for review of the Minister’s decision in order to declare the name change void with retrospective effect. The Chairpersons Association has reason to believe that it should be successful with such a review application … Any changes will be premature and a waste of taxpayers’ money at this stage,” wrote the CA chairperson, Mr André Naudé. The SRPA joined

ranks with the CA in declaring the name-change event hosted on 29 September at the information centre as “premature”. “The court case regarding the name change has not been finalised yet,” said the SRPA manager, Mr Phillip Olivier. The wasteful expenditure on a name-change party was also severely criticised by the SRPA. “We feel that the monies spent on the party could have and should have been spent on much-needed basic improvements in town, such as water problems, sewerage, incomplete road works, pavements and stop signs, not to mention that there is no money to repair or install new street lights throughout the town,” stated the SRPA. The SRPA stated that they could not justify exorbitant amounts of taxpayers’ money being spent on an extravagant party. They wanted to know exactly how much of the taxpayers’ hard-earned money was spent on this venture. The spokesperson

of the Makhado Municipality was asked on 2 October what the amount was but has as yet not given an exact amount. At the name change event Lim popo, Premier Cassel Mathale said that “change is costly ... The renaming of certain places, including streets, is an important programme that cannot be delayed or frustrated by financial arguments.” The mayor of Makhado Municipality, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi, said at the event that his council would embark on the process of changing the names of streets and other sites. The CA sent its warning letter, dated 3 October, to the Makhado Municipality, the Road Agency Limpopo, the MEC for roads and transport, Mr Pitsi Moloto, the Limpopo Premier, Mr Cassel Mathale, the Department of Justice, the Thohoyandou and Makhado SAPS, the Soutpansberg Chamber of Commerce and the South African Post Office.

Oh you “elected” ones are rotten

t’s really sick to see this ‘elected’ municipality do some of the things they do. There are countless roads that are too bad to drive on, yet they went all out for a damn name change! We have to buy bottled water, knowing that the water they serve the area isn’t of good quality, while they drive up and down in their fancy cars, only on streets they know aren’t bad.

They do nothing for us yet their Audis, BMWs and Benzes are always fuelled up and clean, with their nice houses, with proper water. We with kids can’t even do laundry or bathe properly or even go to the toilet, because there is only water for an hour. The Way, the Truth and the Life

Pet 2:5 says that the children of God are a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. The worship and ceremonies of the Jewish church were all shadows of Christ and fulfilment in Him. The office that is mentioned here, “a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacriﬁces,” is common to all those in Jesus Christ. Read Rev 1:6. The priesthood of the law was holy, and its holiness was signified by many outer things such as anointing, washing and special clothes. But in the spiritual priesthood of the gospel, holiness itself replaces all of these things. The children of God are all anointed, purified and clothed with holiness. The purpose of this priesthood is “to offer up spiritual sacriﬁces.” It is a spiritual priesthood, therefore the sacrifices are spiritual. Rev 5:8 says: Golden bowls full of incense which are the prayers of the saints. Read also Ps 141:2. Ps 50:23 says praise is also on offering that glorifies God. Read Heb 13:15. Our bodies should be a living sacrifice to the Lord. (Rom 12:1) The sacrifices will be successful because it is “acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” Do not stop sacrificing because you think you are inferior to others or what you have is inferior. No one is excluded for that reason. Under the law those who could not afford a lamb were welcome to bring two doves. Say to the Lord: “What I am, I offer to You, to be wholly Yours.” Nobody is so inferior or poor, that he cannot give his heart to God. It is not you but Jesus that makes the sacrifice pleasing to the Father. - 079 5168303

Vier gimnaste van die Louis Trichardt Gimnastiekklub het vanaf 4 tot 6 Oktober aan die SuidAfrikaanse Gimnastiekspele vir Vlak 4 tot 7 in Centurion deelgeneem en goed presteer. Voor is Innes Steyn (goud brug, algeheel 6de Vlak 5). Agter, van links na regs, is Stephanie Scheepers (algeheel 9de, Vlak 4), Bianca Spies (algeheel 11de, Vlak 6) en Simeon Strydom (goud sprong en brug, silwer vloer, algeheel 3de Vlak 6).

Gimnaste van die Louis Trichardt Gimnastiekklub wat silwer toekennings ontvang het tydens die Noord-sone Gimnastiekkampioenskap in Kemptonpark is voor, van links na regs, Wessel Veldsman en Shaun de Beer. In die middel is Ziamay Malan, Marvelique van der Merwe en Mieke Laubser. Agter is Elma Baker, Rachael du Plessis en Riancke Slump. Afwesig: Ruben Potgieter. Die kampioenskappe is gehou op 21 en 22 September.

The 14-year-old Sahil Patel (left) has been included in the Limpopo U/15 cricket team. The team will be training in Polokwane for the next two weeks before leaving for a tournament in Pretoria. Sahil is a pupil of Makhado Comprehensive School and he trains in Eltivillas under coach Yahya Jiwa (right). Yahya invited other young cricket players to join them at the nets at the Eltivillas school in the afternoons for training. The coaching is offered free of charge. Die Generaal Piet Joubert Voortrekkerkommando in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) het op 3 en 4 Oktober weer bietjie lekker gaan kamp. Die kommando het hul dank uitgespreek teenoor Rina Eybers vir al die moeite wat sy gedoen het, asook Bianka Austin wat as offisier saamgegaan het. Cyclist take on gruelling Three Towers challenge The Soutpansberg was well represented at the fourth annual Westvaal Isuzu Three Towers mountain bike stage race which took place at Mankele Cycle Park in Mpumalanga from 5 to 7 October. Four two-men teams from Makhado (Louis Trichardt) took part in this gruelling event, where cyclists could either compete in the Stage Race with distances of 75km (day 1), 78km (day 2) and 55km (day 3) or the Challenge Race with distances of 55km (day 1), 55km (day 2) and 55km (day 3). All riders rode the same course on the final day, with 200 teams taking part over the three-day period.
