Young woman killed with rock A 20-year-old Lwamondo-Lukau woman is fighting for her life in hospital after a jilted lover ran amok, allegedly hitting her with a blunt instrument, before turning on her elder sister. Her sister was not so lucky as she was killed during the incident.

She is said to have suffered a fatal blow to the head after being struck with a heavy rock.

The alleged killer, who is said to be a local traditional leader’s son and who is believed to have been heavily intoxicated, is said to have fled the scene after the incident. The incident that left the community in a state of shock happened in the early hours of Sunday.

Death seems to frequent this family. In 2002, the family lost the mother, and the father followed in 2007. The children have been living on their own in abject poverty since the passing away of the parents. During Limpopo Mirror’s visit to the family, community leaders were still holed up in a meeting, trying to chart the way forward and to seek ways on how they could assist the family in burying their loved one. In an interview, the younger sister, Lorraine Sikhubuni, who had survived the attack but was still in bandages, said she was asleep in her room and her elder sister Nancy was in another room when she received a call from a neighbour, who told her that her former husband was coming and that they should run away.

“When we lit the lights, he was already at the door and demanding that we open for him. Before I could realise what was happening, he was already in my room, strangling me and threatening to kill me,” she said.

She said her sister came to the room and reprimanded the man, who did not listen to her. She said she ran outside, but he followed her and pinned her to the ground, where he continued to assault her.

“Fearing the worst, my sister came to rescue me by hitting him, whereupon he let me go.

brother’s house, which is not far from our home,” she said.

She said she thought that her sister had also managed to run away. “I only came back to the scene after the arrival of the police and community members, and that was when I was told my sister had been killed,” she said.

She said the whole incident had saddened her as her sister was just trying to protect her but ended up being killed for nothing. Limpopo police spokesperson Lt Col Mohale Ramatseba said they had opened a murder docket and that the investigation was continuing.

“This is very sad indeed. This man divorced me a long time ago and I had accepted this, but he wanted his love back without first talking to me, which I could not accept. My sister died for nothing and I feel guilty about what happened,” she said.

She said it was not the first time he had attacked her, but she had been advised not to lay charges against him. “I regret not having laid charges against him. This would not have happened if I had followed my instincts,” she said.

Mr Enos Mulaudzi, a community leader in the village, said they were worried about incidents of extreme violence in the village.

“Not long ago, we had another murder where a man was hacked to death by a known person. The man was arrested and the case is still continuing,” he said.

Less Easter road fatalities reported Road fatalities on the Limpopo roads have decreased this past Easter weekend, compared to the same period last year.

This was announced in a media statement issued by the provincial Department of Roads and Transport on Tuesday.

Twenty-two people lost their lives on the province’s roads the past Easter, compared to the 25 last year.

“Two major routes, the N1 and R101 leading in and out of the province, were heavily congested as expected, with holiday makers and members of the ZCC Church making their annual pilgrimage to Moria.

The province recorded more than 7600 vehicles that entered and exited Limpopo between 5 April and 9 April,” said the department.

Apart from reducing the senseless loss of lives this Easter, the number of road accidents was significantly reduced from 83 in 2011 to 49 this year. Many of the accidents in the province happened in the villages and townships as

opposed to major routes. In the Vhembe district, one person died on road B3635, in Giyani at Xihosane village, when the driver of a Toyota sedan lost control of his vehicle.

The vehicle overturned, claiming the life of one passenger while the driver and one passenger were injured. At Ndwambe village, a pedestrian (a 34-year-old woman) was hit and killed by a sedan while crossing the road. One person died and four people were injured at Tshiozwi when a bakkie driver lost control and the vehicle overturned. Another pedestrian (a 34-year-old male) was hit and killed on the R81 in Bolobedu and Belleview village. Two people were killed in the Waterberg district in Lephalale at Slangfontein when a bakkie’s tyre burst and it overturned. Two people died on the Malebogo and Taibosch road between Eldorado and Tevrede when a sedan overturned.

“Many of the accidents this Easter happened in the villages and the townships. As the department, we are going

to strengthen our working relation with the municipalities to ensure that we reduce carnage on the municipal routes. We are further going to engage with the broader communities to ensure that all road users in our communities change their behaviour, obey all the rules of the road, reduce speed and refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol,” said the department.

During this Easter, at least 27 229 cars were stopped and screened, while 1 232 vehicles were tested for roadworthiness. A total of 29 cars were taken off the road while 59 were impounded. A further 112 road users were arrested (17 for drunk driving, 10 for suspected stolen vehicles, one for possession of dagga, one for bribery, one for reckless and negligent driving and 10 for driving without public transport permits). A total of 104 warrants were issued.

The highest speed recorded on the province’s roads during the Easter weekend was 143km/h in an 80km/h zone.

Huge boost to Levubu’s emerging farmers Successful land claimants who were given farms in Levubu could soon see themselves smiling all the way to the bank. This comes as a result of a meeting held between the new emerging farmers and giant retail company Pick n Pay and a marketing company, Purefruit.

The meeting was held at the 210 Sibasa Hotel last Wednesday evening. Represented communities at the meeting came from Mauluma, Tshiitwa and Tshakhuma.

In an interview, Mr Ameer Maharaj, HOD-Africa/Sustainability/Transformation at Pick n Pay Retailers said it had always been their commitment to grow

local businesses. “We are here to get firsthand information about the produce in this area, with a view to buying as much produce as possible from the emerging farmers. What we have observed during our fact-finding visit is quite encouraging regarding the high-quality produce and the professionalism at which these businesses are run,” he said.

He added that they would assist the farmers in terms of skills development and in the introduction of new exciting varieties that would stimulate the market. He said they had projects throughout the country and Limpopo was the only province left.

said they had been working with Levubu farmers since last year. “Since we started, we have managed to link farmers with many giant retail companies and we are very excited with our new deal,” he said.

He also mentioned that they would ask Pick n Pay to assist farmers by starting certain projects that would enhance their produce to meet international standards.

An excited Chief Tshifovhedze Madzivhandila of Tshakhuma Farming said there was the propect of increased volume margins. “We are very happy and we are looking forward to supplying the best to Pick n Pay,” he said.

Easter visit by beloved gospel singer

A good reason to stay home over the Easter weekend? This was the scene at the Kranskop toll plaza on the N1which greeted a resident from Louis Trichardt last Thursday afternoon.

The resident was on his way back from Johannesburg. He spent almost an hour in backed up traffic before eventually getting through the toll gate.

Hospital bids farewell to dedicated nurse Colleagues and friends at the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital bade farewell to one of their own during the celebratory party of a hardworking nurse, Mrs Maguga Bongekile Maguga, who had just retired.

The event was held at the hospital premises in Louis Trichardt last Wednesday. Maguga (65) retired after serving for 42 years in the profession.

Her career begun in 1969 when she first trained as a student nurse at the Mosvold Mission Hospital in Swaziland. Maguga then joined Elim Hospital in

1971, where she worked as a staff nurse. She also worked at Tshilidzini Hospital in 1979 as a midwife, before she was promoted to professional nurse.

She had joined the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital in 1997. She worked at the hospital till her retirement. At the time of her retirement, she worked as an assistant nursing manager at the hospital. The hospital’s acting CEO, Mrs Connie Raulinga, depicted her as a hardworking nurse who will always be missed.

She said that Maguga was highly conscious of infection control.

“She was very motivational, particularly to the nurses, and she always encouraged them to be clean and honest at all times,” said Raulinga, adding that Maguga would always be remembered for her good work at the hospital.

She added that, due to Maguga’s social skills, they even managed to establish a choir at the hospital. In response, Maguga said that she was happy at home although she always missed the hospital. “I enjoyed myself and was always willing to be part of the hospital,” she said.

It was testified that on 1 April, the two South Africans entered Zimbabwe through an undesig-

After a gruelling elimination process, Nemathithi emerged as the judges’ favourite. For her efforts, she went home R25 000 richer. For the intelligent IT specialist, this is the culmination of many years of hard work and the start of a tough road in the world of beauty.

Vhembe is one of the five district municipalities in Limpopo. It is made of four local municipalities, namely, Thulamela, Makhado, Musina and Mutale.

After three weeks of eliminations, twelve beauties from the four local municipalities finally qualified to battle for supremacy in this competition which will from now be an annual event. The event is a joint venture between Vhembe District Municipality and Vite Trading Enterprise.

Lufuno is not a novice in the beauty pageant world. Among other titles, she has been Miss Kruger National Park in 2008, Miss Khwevha High School 2007, first princess for Miss Venda Plaza in 2006 and Miss TSB in 2010.

“I started very young, if my memory still serves me well. I was just 10 years old when I was crowned Miss Little Shayandima, and since then I told myself that I would like to compete in the Miss South Africa competition. It is happening and I am looking forward to a day when I will be representing this province in the finals of Miss South Africa,” she said.

Nemathithi said she was still going to sit down with the management of Vhembe District Municipality to identify organisations that deal with disadvantaged children. She also wants to help identify new models. “This area has a lot of potential. What they need is assistance from those who have the experience, and this is what I will be foccussing on,” she said.

Razwiedani appointed as acting MM of Musina The general manager in the office of the Vhembe District executive mayor, Mr Shumani Razwiedani, has been appointed the acting municipal manager of Musina Municipality.

He was appointed with effect from 4 Apri. It follows the municipal council's suspension of the municipal manager, Mr Abram Luruli, in November last year.

The council had taken a resolution on the intention to suspend its municipal manager during a special meeting held on Tuesday 15 November last year. Luruli was immediately served with a letter after that council meeting and was given an opportunity to respond why he thought he should not be suspended. Even though Luruli met the deadline for submitting his written submission on Monday, 21 November, he was later suspended.

He was charged with absconding from work for four months without permission from the council.

According to the council, Luruli took leave from 1 April 2011 and he was supposed to come back to office on 1 June 2011; instead, he reported for work on Friday, 11 November, 2011.

Luruli also faces charges of corruption, maladministration, failure to comply with the Municipal Finance Management Act and the unlawful awarding of tenders.

“Most of the town’s water is not fit for human consumption” Following weeks of dirty drinking water, the Soutpansberg Ratepayers Association (SRPA) gave the Makhado and the Vhembe Municipality an ultimatum of 10 days to provide them with their weekly water test results.

In the meantime, the ratepayers conducted their own tests.

“It has been weeks now that the residents of Louis Trichardt have been struggling with contaminated water. The water supplied from our taps is black, contains plastic and dirt, and it smells like something had died in it. It is most appalling,” the SRPA states in a letter to the municipal manager, dated 19 March.

The SRPA said that they used a certified independent company to do water tests for the association.

“We hereby request the tests done by either you or the Makhado Municipality, proving different results. Please make sure we get the results within 10 working days.

If the results are not given to the SRPA within the 10 working days, we will assume that the results are the same as ours and we will then publish the tests results in our possession,” states the letter from the SRPA. The SRPA manager, Ms Aretha Smit, said last week that no response had been received from the municipality. “Most of the water in Louis Trichardt is not fit for human consumption. The results also show that there are E-coli in the water,” states the SRPA letter.

The SRPA had the water tested at eight different locations.

Water was tested at an outside tap in Tshikota, an outside tap in the town’s downtown area, Gateway Lodge, Ridgeway College, Louis Trichardt High School (outside tap), at the dam in the grazing camp near the Sinthumule/Kutama road, at the sewerage pump station near SA Breweries and at the sewerage dam at the Eltivillas sewerage pump station.

The water samples from Tshikota and Louis Trichardt downtown was fit for human use. Bacteria were present, but the level was still below the recommended limit for drinking water. The water at the inside tap at Gateway Lodge was fit for human use. The water at Ridgeway College’s outside tap was not fit for human use. Bacteria were present and the counts were above the recommended limit for drinking water.

The water at the outside tap at Louis Trichardt High School was likewise not fit for human use.

The bacteria and coliform counts were above the recommended limit. At the last three locations, there have been sewerage spillages for years and, quite understandably, the water there was unfit for human consumption. At the grazing camp, the report states a likelihood of contamination from vegetables and other crops eaten raw, and milk from cows grazing on pastures will result in the transmission of human pathogens. The report warns that the E.coli count at the industrial area near the breweries was extremely high, indicating untreated sewerage.

“As the chance for infestation increases with the amount of E.coli present, the risk involved with recreational contact can be seen as high. Don’t swim in the water as the E.coli is above the limit of

400/100ml,” reads the report. The same warnings apply to the Eltivillas sewerage dam.

The samples were taken on 8 February. The SRPA recommended that samples be repeated at the two schools and that was done on 22 February.

In the second round, the test results showed that at the outside taps of both schools the water was still not fit for human use.

The coliforms, E.coli and bacteria counts were above the recommended limit for drinking water.

The report states that bacterial counts should be much lower and should preferably contain no coliforms. “It is unacceptable to have Escherichia coli (E.coli) in drinking water, as it indicates recent faecal contamination and indicates that other human pathogens such as Vibrio cholera (cholera) and Salmonella typhi (typhoid fever), rotar virus and protozoan parasites can be present,” the report states. The samples were tested and the report compiled by QMS Agri Science (qms_agri@ telkomsa.net).

Guests from sector departments, non-government organisations, community-based organisations and municipal officials recently gathered in the municipal boardroom to launch the much-awaited Musina Aids Council.

During her keynote and launch address, Mayor Carol Phiri said the day marked a very important milestone in the fight against HIV and Aids in the Musina municipal area. She said the Musina Aids Council was a part of the South African National Aids Council (SANAC), which would also carry out the task of overseeing and advising the municipality on HIV and Aids issues.

On this note I would like to encourage all the community members, stakeholders and organisations to work with this council.”

She said government had, over the years, also been dedicating a lot of resources to prevention, treatment and care for those infected and affected by HIV and AIDS and she had no doubts that the newly launched council would help government in achieving these goals.

A large number of church members attended the annual Easter conference of the church at its headquarters at Tshitereke during the weekend. Members of Callies Social Golf Club pay their last respects to a fallen comrade, Edward Mmbi, who was buried last weekend.

Mmbi’s name to be immortalised The Mmbi family of Mukula outside Thohoyandou received an extraordinary honour when a member of their family was honoured during his funeral last Saturday.

Philanthropic businessman Edward Mmbi (58), who captained Atteridgeville Callies Social Golf Club and started a soccer team, Mukula Avalon, at his home village died in hospital after being involved in a car accident outside Louis Trichardt three weeks ago. Mmbi, who owned Lotavha Training Centre in Gauteng, was a respected and generous businessman, who did not hesitate to plough back into his community.

During his funeral, Callies Social Golf Club members served as pallbearers. Mukula Avalon players, who were clad in one of the uniforms Mmbi had bought them, led the hearse to the local cemetery. Clad in their red-and-black golf regalia and wielding their golf sticks, Callies players were a spectacle during the funeral.

Speakers representing the two sporting codes he participated in called for his name to be immortalised and that his legacy should continue for generations to come. Mr Ndhlabule Shongwe, a representative of the golf club, said the club had unanimously agreed that their annual Callies Singles Knockout Competition be renamed the Edward Mmbi Singles Knockout Competition. “The man has done a lot for the team. He was the defending champion of the tournament,” he said.

Chief Mphatele Takalani urged other local businesspeople in his area to follow in Mmbi’s

footsteps. He described his passing away as a great loss to the people of Mukula.

Gudani Mmbi, the deceased’s daughter, said the honour augured well for the family. “My father was a real gentleman; he lived life to the fullest.”

Mmbi is survived by his wife and three children.

Journalists who are members of the Vhembe Media Association (VMA), most of whom lack formal training, stand to benefit as a result of a memorandum of understanding soon to be signed between the organisation and a local training college, Kundani Training College.

This was agreed upon during the meeting held in the Thohoyandou 2010 Centre a fortnight ago. According to the agreement, members of the VMA will receive training at Kundani free of charge.

VMA Chairperson Godfrey Mandiwana said he was optimistic that the deal would go through as only the paperwork was left. Mandiwana said the opportunity could not have come at a better time, as the association was looking for an academic institution to partner it in equipping its members with much-needed skills.

The days of travelling to Musina to access library facilities will soon be history for the people of Nancefield, after the construction of the R2.8 million library took off last month.

The project is funded by the provincial Department of Sports, Arts and Culture.

The library consists of the circulation area, where thousands of books and other material will be kept. There will also be an audiovisual room, a cataloguing section, an informal reading area, children’s library activity room, a spacious reading area, ablution facilities, access control area and a kitchen. “Youth camp meetings can help keep the youth from the streets.

Easter holidays are very busy and the youth could be easily tempted to do bad things if they are not taken care of,” he said.

The Zimbabwean immigration recorded a sharp increase in the number of travellers who passed through Beit Bridge during the Easter holiday, compared to the same period last year.

According to statistics, a total of 78 939 people were handled by border officials between Thursday and Sunday, quite a surge compared to the 55 300 of last year.

The local assistant regional immigration manager in charge of Beit Bridge, Mr Charles Gwede, said the highest number of travellers was recorded on Good Friday, when 27 389 people passed through the entry port.

"During the entire Easter holiday period, the border was extremely busy and we recorded 52 112 travellers on the entry side while, on the arrival side, we handled a total of 26 827 travellers. This was largely because we had more Zimbabweans and foreigners from neighbouring SADC countries visiting their families," he said.

Gwede attributed this year’s sharp increase in the movement to the documentation exercise in South Africa, which saw many Zimbabweans acquiring long-term study and work permits.

“Most of our people are no longer afraid of travelling home during holidays because of the relaxation of South African immigration laws, which have seen a large number of Zimbabweans working in that country," he added.

Gwede said despite the border's having been heavily congested during the Easter period, immigration officials efficiently managed the situation, which was also characterised by a huge volume of traffic on the entry side.

"We had put mechanisms in place to deal with congestion, hence our officers were able to clear travellers without causing delays,” he said.

Gwede said on Sunday they cleared 99 buses, most which were South Africa-bound. Commercial trucks destined for East and Central African countries such as Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia also passed through the border post. On average, the border handles about 10 000 people daily on both the entry and exit side, with the number increasing to about 25 000 during peak periods.

Municipal library still closed for public The Makhado municipal library's gate is still shut, even after the spokesperson for the Makhado Municipality, Mr Louis Bobodi, had said that the library would open its doors for public use on 10 April.

In December 2011, the municipality issued a public announcement that the municipal library would be temporarily closed for public service “due to roof renovation”. In the statement published on the municipal website, it was stated that the library doors would be closed for public service between 12 December 2011 and 5 January 2012. January came and went and the library doors stayed shut. This situation continued in February and March, with

little sign of renovation being carried out. Library users from around Louis Trichardt started expressing their discomfort and dissatisfaction with the library's not being open. They say the renovations are now dragging on instead of coming to completion.

Students and learners say that they are being disadvantaged by the municipality's failure to complete the renovation work.

In an earlier story published in Limpopo Mirror (23rd March), one of the students, Thabelo Mutungutungu, said that since January he had been struggling to adjust his mind to reading and studying at home, since there is a lot of noise in the village. “I find the library atmosphere conducive to studying,” he said.

Even though Limpopo Mirror's reporter was barred from peeping through the glass windows to see inside the library by the security official on duty, one worker told the paper that library users must not be very hopeful that the library doors will open soon. “Much work still needs to be done, inside and outside the library,” the worker said on condition of anonymity.

Construction workers could be seen on the roof and working with paving bricks on the premises.

When contacted for comment on Tuesday morning, municipal spokesperson Mr Louis Bobodi said he was on leave and referred the paper to Mr EL Mugari, who was unavailable.

Dzhombe elected to lead sub-region A former councillor of the Makhado Municipality, Mr Jerry Dzhombe, was elected chairperson of the ANC in the Makhado Sub-Region during an elective conference that was held at Buba Lodge outside Elim last Saturday.

Dzhombe was contesting against former chairperson and Hlanganani South Circuit Manager Mr Mashudu Munungufhala. Mr Elvis Lebea, also a former councillor of the Makhado Municipality, was

elected deputy-chairperson.

Municipality spokesperson Ndwato Tshiila said the municipality had not refused the community permission to march, but first wanted to find out what they wanted and that they were to finalize arrangements of the march with the leaders.

Thulamela Municipality’s refusal to grant Sanco in Malamulele permission to march against poor service delivery was met with anger and revulsion.

More than 500 people, who had assembled for the march, only to be told that there was to be no march, went home disappointed, but not without taking action.

They were later addressed by the Sanco leadership, who told them they (the leaders) were to meet the Thulamela Municipality's leadership, who had requested a meeting before permission for the march was to be granted.

He said the four men were still in police custody, pending investigations. They are expected to appear in court soon.

The suspects then raided a nearby home and looted household property worth US$500.

They robbed the victims of US$80 and R1 700 before they gang-raped four girls, who are members of the same family.

The local police spokesperson, Chief Supt Lawrence Chinhengo, said the incident occurred on Easter Saturday at around 23:00 at the Tshamnanga area, about 16km out of the border town.

Dynamos to meet African Warriors in NFD Dynamos will once again play away from home this weekend.

They played against African Warriors at the Charles Mopedi Stadium in the Free State last weekend. They will play against another Free State side, United FC, tomorrow afternoon.

Tomorrow’s match will be played at the Botshabelo Stadium. Dynamos are now perched at the bottom of the log, following a string of poor results in the previous matches.

In the other National First Division matches that will also be played tomorrow afternoon,

Thanda Royal Zulu will battle it out with Witbank Spurs. Spurs are fighting for survival, while Royal Zulu are one of the hot contenders for the league title.

Spurs are not easy to beat at home and for that reason Thanda will be in for a shock if they underestimate them. The match will be played at the Ackerville Stadium in Witbank.

Blackburn Rovers and Mpumalanga Black Aces will meet at the Buffalo City Stadium in the Eastern Cape. Sunday will see FC AK host FC Cape Town at the Eldorado Park Stadium in Johannesburg. Bay United will wel-

come Atlie FC at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.

The log leaders, University of Pretoria, will play against Carara Kicks at the Phuthaditshaba Stadium in the Free State.

Carara Kicks have a reputation of giving University of Pretoria a tough time every time they meet and history is likely to repeat itself on Sunday. Sevutsa Stars will play at home against Vasco da Gama.

An Old Mutual senior financial advisor, Mr Ernest Magoda, and his wife, Patricia, are off to Vietnam, China, Singapore and Ho Chi Minh City for two weeks. He left the country on Wednesday.

Magoda is the first person in the Thohoyandou area to qualify in the highly rated Old Mutual Top 25 Offshore Convention in the whole of South Africa, breaking the record since 1982 when the Thohoyandou branch was launched. He is the only black person who has made it to the top 25, the cream of Old Mutual in the whole of South Africa. Of his achievements, Magoda was quick to point out that “hard work rewards and success does not come cheap; perserverance is the key. I dedicate all these achievements to the Mighty God who made it possible. I would also like to thank my lovely wife, Patricia, who stood by me through thick and thin and gave me muchneeded support. This achievement is also dedicated to my church, Calvary Christian Church, and its leader, Dr Maxwell Masakona.”

Rope skippers participate in trials The national rope skipping championship trials, under the auspices of the South African Gymnastics Federation, were held at the premises of Soutpansberg Primary School in Louis Trichardt, between 30 March and 4 April.

The purpose of the trials was to make a selection of at least six rope skippers, out of 36, who would then go to compete with other countries in Florida in the US during the World Rope Skipping Championships later this year.

Rope skippers from Limpopo, Western Cape, Kwazulu Natal and Free State, as well as the neighbouring Mozambique, had all descended to Louis Trichardt for the trials. The first trials

were held in Cape Town for the national level qualification.

“These trials are held for us to determine the fitness, endurance, speed and style of each rope skipper in order to make a valued selection,” said Tinyiko Makhubele of the Makhado Rope Skipping Club. “We can’t just pick up anybody from the street and send them to the US. We need to make sure that our rope skippers are well groomed for the championship games ahead.”

Ropeskippers from Mozambique were also training with South African rope skippers in the same camps, since there is a strong relationship amongst rope skipping clubs in all African countries involved in the

rope skipping games. Other countries, like Nigeria, did not make it to the championship camp in Loius Tricahrdt because they had not managed to acquire funding.

National programme manager for South African Gymnastics Federation for rope skipping, Sandile Ntombela, indicated that they were optimistic about the championship games to be held in the US. “We strongly believe that our rope skippers will come home winners,” he said. “We can see their strength and versatile skills during training sessions and the trials.”

The names of rope skippers who qualified to go to the US had not been confirmed yet at the time of going to press.

Local soccer legends on tour Limpopo’s own Mother Teresa, radio presenter Rebecca Tsan’wisi, has organised a trip for 40 veterans in various fields, such as academics, doctors, businessmen and soccer legends, in the Tzaneen area to play veteran soccer in Maputo in Mozambique.

Tsan’wisi said the main idea behind the trip wass to create awareness among the young people to emulate what elderly people are doing, instead of sitting and drinking the whole day. Ntsan’wisi said the trip will start this month and it

will end in July. “They are all aged between 55 and 90 years and we are going to play with former presenters and journalists in Maputo before we proceed to the 2012 veterans Cup in France, Dego County in California (USA) and later to Washington DC, where they will play in the Masters Veteran Cup,” said Tsan’wisi. The director of the team, Timmoth Madibana, said Ntsan’wisi had decided to use veterans as an example to the youth.

“This is awareness to young South Africans to encourage them to love sports,” said Madibana.

While it was time for many players to enjoy a relaxed Easter Weekend, it was business as usual for the teams affiliated to the NFD League.

Dynamos continued to drop league points. They lost 1-3 against African Warriors. Dynamos are now lying in the third-last position on the log.

Blackburn Rovers missed their chance to move to the top of the log when they suffered a 0-1 defeat at the hands of FC Cape Town. Leandre Tawanda scored the winning goal for the team from the Mother City in the 78th minute. Rovers are placed second on the log with 41 points, two behind the log leaders, the University of Pretoria.

On the other hand, University of Pretoria, or Amatuks as they are affectionately called, were unexpectedly

held to a goalless draw by FC AK. The former Kaizer Chiefs fast forward, David Radebe, continued his good form when he scored a brace against Sevutsa Stars, who scored through Thabo Rakhale and Matho Ndoda. Chippa United kept their title hopes alive when they brutally walloped Atlie FC 5-1. Chippa’s goals came via Petros Ngcobo (2), Andile Mbenyane, Joshua Souls and Sibusiso Nhlapo. Atlie FC’s solitary goal was scored by Jeffrey Maluleke.

After losing their last three matches in a row, Vasco da Gama finally beat Carara Kicks 3-1. In Richards Bay, Thanda Royal Zulu shared the spoils with Bay United, with whom they drew 2-2. Witbank Spurs beat Mpumalanga Black Aces 1-0.

Cash prizes for winners of soccer challenge

The Makhado Municipality said farewell to its former municipal manager, Mr Shadrack Tshikalange (seated fourth from right in front) at an event that was held at the municipal caravan park in Louis Trichardt last Wednesday. With him in the photo are members of staff of the Makhado Municipality.

All teams that participated in the Shayandima Soccer Challenge went home smiling, after they were given cash incentives and medals after the games.

The games, which are held during the off season, were won this year by Shayandima Silver Stars in the men’s section and

by Shayandima Morning Stars in the ladies’ section.

Silver Stars beat Tshedza FC 3-0 in the finals, while Shayandima Disco Stars walloped Dark City Soccer Development 6-0 in the ladies’ section.

For their hard work, Silver Stars received an amount of

R2500, a big trophy and medals.

In the ladies’ section, Shayandima Morning Stars received R2 000, a trophy and medals.

The losers also received cash prizes and medals for participating.

Speaking during the prizegiving ceremony, community leader and one of the founders of the tournament Alex Nemakonde said the tournament was in its second year and was already yielding good results.

“More and more youths are patronizing these games and we are very excited with the progress so far,” he said.

He said they were looking

at 25 youths from each team, which totaled 125 youths who were taken off the streets because of the game. “The 125 we target also bring their friends and relatives, which makes this day one of the most memorable in our township. We observe strict discipline during the games. We do not allow liquor during our games and we are satisfied with the high standard maintained by the players and their fans,” he added He said as community leaders they had thought of ways to curb the spiralling rate of crime by introducing soccer tournaments in the townships.

Khubvi Stars and Sambandou Hunters in a draw In their Thulamela Local Football Association League match that was played at the Khubvi grounds on Saturday, Khubvi African Stars held Sambandou Seven Hunters to a 2-2 draw.

The game was characterized by wasted scoring chances. African Stars had their first regret in the 14th minute, when their playmaker, Thingivhone Netshishivhe, unleashed aimlessly from the goal area.

Mbavhalelo Khabana of Seven Hunters committed a similar blunder moments later. Instead of relaxing on the ball and trying other possible options, Khabana

volleyed from the edge of the penalty box. The visitors from Sambandou were the first to blow the trumpet. They were awarded an indirect free kick within the box. Thuso Musalafu sent in a rocket to give his side a 1-0 lead at half time.

African Stars leveled matters in the 54th minute. Mulweli Ragimana hooked in the ball, following a corner kick that was taken by Prince Munaka. Thingivhone Netshishivhe of African Stars handled the ball intentionally soon afterwards. The referee, Mr Mulalo Mushiana, reprimanded him with a card.

The keeper of African Stars, Phathu Sivhidzho, miskicked the ball in an attempt to clear. Azwimpheleli Mabonyane capitalised and scored an easy goal.

Dynamos crowned new Easter champs Tshiozwi Dynamos were crowned as the champions of the Sinthumule/Kutama Community Sport Development Easter tournament on Monday, after they beat Zamenkomste Liverpool 5-4 on Sunday at the Tshiozwi grounds.

The winner was determined by penalty shoot-

out, after the teams played to a goalless draw.

As usual, Liverpool were the superior side in as far as ball possesion was concerned, but they failed to convert their dominance into goals. Their strikers, Lesley Muvhango and Dakalo Radzilani, were not aggressive enough to keep Dynamos’ defence running.

Londy Musiamo was the first player to go into referee Mashudu Sathuma’s book. He handled the ball intentionally and was lucky to escape with a yellow card. Kingsley Mulingwe of Liverpool was booked for a late tackle on Mpho Mavhandu.

Dynamos introduced Mgeyi Mafela for Mbengeni Rambuwani in the last half. Liverpool continued to enjoy more ball possession but squandered clear chances.

Dynamos went home with R3 000, a floating trophy, gold medals and a new soccer kit. Zamenkomste Liverpool collected R2 000, silver medals and a soccer kit. The third position went to Madombidzha Western Stars, who received R700 and bronze medals.

A prize of R600 went to Maelula New Mates, who ended in fourth position.

The player of the tournament and top goal scorer was Takalani Mulelu of Liverpool, who went home with two trophies. The goalkeeper of Mbengeni Rambuwani and Raymond Sikhitha the tournament was Marvel Mauda of Tshiozwi Dynamos. both try to get to the ball.

All Stars geared to destroy Baroka FC Phungo All Stars are preparing themselves for a tough Vodacom Promotional League match this weekend. They will host the current log leaders, Baroka FC, at the Eltivillas grounds tomorrow afternoon.

Baroka must win the match at all cost or else they will surrender their leadership to the other title chasers, Winners Park. Phungo’s defence line is one of the best in the league and Winners Park will be lucky if they manage to find their way through it.

In the other Vodacom Promotional League matches tomorrow afternoon, Basel FC will entertain Blue Rocks at the Malamulele Stadium. Basel’s killer striker, Jafta Mabosho, is likely to pass a late fitness test and form part of the starting lineup tomorrow. Mabosho was out of action for the past three weeks, due to injury. Nobela All Stars will be away to rub shoulders with Magezi FC. They will play at the Seshego Stadium. Dinare FC and Mighty FC will fight for league

points at the Moloto Stadium in Modimolle. Rospa United will undertake a journey to Lephalale, where they will meet Lephalale Young Killers.

The Dolphins will have a date with Fanang Diatla at the Lebowakgomo Stadium. Modimolle Aces are expected to give Super Eagles a day to remember when they meet at the Ephraim Mohale Stadium in Modimolle, and Winners Park will play against Giyani Hotspurs at the Mahwelereng Stadium.

Match ends in chaos The semifinal match of the Khakhathi and Friends Soccer Tournament between Tshakhuma FC and Mphathele FC at the FNB Makwarela Stadium on Sunday ended in a dramatic way.

With the score 2-1 for Mphathele at half-time, the match officials requested the teams through their respective captains

to pay them R100 per team to cover their traveling expenses, before the second half kicked off. The captains then told the officials that the teams were not prepared to pay, saying that they had been under the impression that the sponsor would foot the bill.

After a lengthy discussion with the

captains, the match officials left the pitch and the match could not continue.

The sponsor, Mr Khakhathi Tshisikule, of Khakhathi and Friends fame, told the packed stadium that he was not going to pay the match officials, saying the arrangement was that the teams would pay the officials and that he would only pay for the prizes. The teams also left the pitch after the disappointing announcement.
