By Kaizer Nengovhela The murder of a young woman at Ha-Ramukhuba Dambuwo in the midst of National Women’s Month has led different community structures to call for an end to gender-based violence. The victim was identified as Fholisani Sinthumule (18).

According to an anonymous eyewitness, the incident occurred on Sunday, 8 August. The suspect, Maanda Maeba, allegedly accused Sinthumule, apparently his girlfriend, of cheating. A heated argument ensued at Maeba’s home, and he allegedly stabbed her to death.

Maeba then went to his grandmother and told her that he had killed Sinthumule. A bloodied knife was found in his house, with Sinthumule’s 18-month-old baby sitting next to her body in a pool of blood, crying.

According to the Limpopo police spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo, Sinthumule was stabbed in the head several times. The incident had occurred at about 13:00. When the police arrived at the scene, the victim was lying on the ground. “We were alerted by members of the community who saw the incident taking place,” he said.

The suspect handed himself over to the police on Monday, 9 August, and was charged with murder.

Maeba (26) appeared in the Vuwani

Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 10 August. The case was postponed to 31 August for further investigation.

Mr Petrus Maselesela, the deceased’s uncle, said they were deeply upset and saddened by the incident. “If Maeba had issues with her, he should have just left her, without harming her.” He said that the family was very poor and humbly asked for donations of groceries and other necessities needed for the funeral arrangements. The chairperson of the Real Man Foundation, Mr Suprice Nengudza, said that no man killing a woman, for whatever reason, was a real man. “Real men do not kill or rape their women but give comfort and security to them. Let us all shout out in one voice against the abuse and cruelty perpetrated against our womenfolk. Only then will this country be a better place to live in,” Nengudza said.

The MEC for Social Development, Ms Nkakareng Rakgoale, expressed her disappointment in the manner that some people still used violence to solve their problems. She has condemned the incident in the strongest terms.

“It is very disturbing to still learn about incidents like this, especially during the month of August, when we are supposed to be commemorating and celebrating women. Gender-based violence is not exclusively perpetrated

against women. In fact, women of today must emulate the women of 1956 and resolve disputes in a more peaceful manner,” said Rakgoale.

She said that the department had dispatched a team of social workers to provide psychosocial support to the traumatised family of the victim and other affected parties. “We once again urge people who have problems in their relationships not to resort to violence but to rather seek professional help from our social workers,” Rakgoale said.

Cllr Tshimangadzo Malada, who received and signed the memorandum on behalf of the mayor, Humbulani Mulovhedzi, said that he would

forward the memorandum to the mayor and hoped that she would respond soon.

In July this year, former Thulamela Mayor Avhashoni Tshifhango was axed, following an instruction from the provincial executive committee (PEC) of the ANC in Limpopo. This was in line with the forensic report on the VBS matter that recommended action against all politicians and officials involved in the scandal.

Three people, including a woman, appeared in the Tshilwavhusiku Magistrate’s Court on 10 August on charges of murder, following an incident where Rudzani Mutepe (43) died at a shebeen at Tshikhwani in the Sinthumule area on the night of 3 August.

Mutepe was allegedly stabbed to death while drinking locally brewed traditional beer (Mutomboti) at Tshikhwani.

The four people were reportedly seen drinking Mutomboti together on the day of the incident and through the night at a local shebeen. What exactly happened next remains unclear and most residents can only speculate.

According to Limpopo police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo, an argument ensued between them, after which the three suspects allegedly stabbed Mutepe several times in his head with sharp objects.

Mutepe was rushed to Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital, where he succumbed to his head injuries two days later, on Thursday, 5 August.

David Makhokha (51), Ms Ambani Makhokha (26) and Azwihangwisi Luvha (47) were arrested the following day (Friday, 6 August) and charged with murder. They appeared in court on Tuesday (10th) and the case was postponed to 16 August for further investigation.

The deceased’s brother, Bernard Mutepe, said that Rudzani had been attacked with pangas. “I received a call from a relative, who said she had heard that my brother had been stabbed during a fight at a shebeen. I immediately left my house and walked to the shebeen.” Bernard was overwhelmed with grief and said that the family had no idea what had happened there that night.

Vhamusanda Vho-Mbulaheni Ramabulana said that the traditional council was worried and hugely disturbed by the fact that so many people were killed in the village. “This is the third murder incident in the village since January. We are tired of this. We urge everyone to stand up with us, so that we can fight this curse that is threatening to wipe us out altogether.” Ramabulana conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the Mutepe family.

Mutepe will be buried on Friday, 13 August, at Tshikhwani. The service will start at 06:00.

A quick survey done in Louis Trichardt indicates that women are more conscientious than men as far as the wearing of masks in public spaces is concerned. Out of the 724 people observed in different locations, 84,78% of the women wore masks, while only 68,16% of men properly covered their mouth and nose. Young adults seem to be the biggest culprits when in terms of not wearing masks in a proper manner in public.

The survey was conducted in five public spaces. The first location was the corner of Devenish and Burger Street, close to the taxi and bus rank. Here, 144 people were observed in an hour’s time. Out of these, 64 men and 30 women wore their masks on properly. The people wearing masks not properly covering their noses were also counted. In total, 18 men and four women were recorded in this category.

Because more men than women were counted in this group, the percentages are a better indication of compliance.

Men were more prone to disobey the mask rules, with only 60,95% complying, versus the 76,92% of women who wore masks.

The second location was in the parking area near the corner of Songozwi and Burger Street, near the alley leading to the post office. This location had a higher percentage of compliance, with 84,29% of the women wearing a mask that covered their mouth and nose. In the case of the men, the percentage was 78,57%. In total, 168 people’s actions were

recorded, 70 women and 98 men.

The third location was in Krogh Street near the municipal testing grounds. In an hour, 61 people were observed. Most of this group were males (50) and only 60% of them wore masks in a proper manner.

Thirteen of the men wore no masks, while seven wore them under their noses.

The parking area of the Grove Centre in Songozwi street (Checkers centre) was the fourth observation point.

Here, 119 people were observed, of which 81,25% of the women and 70,91% of the men wore their masks in a proper manner. Interestingly, five women and only two men wore no masks. The men who wore masks in an improper manner amounted to 14, versus the seven women.

On 10 August, the team returned to Burger Street, close to the taxi rank, but to a slightly different spot. In total, 233 people were observed, of which the majority (139) were women.

The compliance percentage for women was high once more (89,21%), with only 68,09% of men fully complying with legislation. Eighteen of the men wore no masks, compared to

The group of observers also made notes and tried to determine age groups for the people.

The people were categorised into five groups, namely primary school, secondary school, young adults, adults and the elderly.

In the five locations, only 10 primary school children were spotted. The observations were done during the morning on a school day, which explains the low percentage of children. All the young children wore masks in a proper manner.

As far as the children in secondary school were concerned, the situation was much the same. Fourteen children were spotted, of which only one boy did not wear a mask. One boy and a girl wore masks that did not cover their noses.

The second-biggest group was the young adults, but was also the group with the lowest compliance. Out of the 238 young people observed, 11 of the women and 31 of the men wore no mask at all. The compliance percentage was 77,39% for women and only 62,60% for men.

The biggest group observed was adults. Out of the 292 people, 84,62% of the women wore masks in a proper manner, compared to the 65,14% of the men. Eleven women and 32 men were spotted wearing no masks at all.

The last group, the elderly, had a relatively high rate of compliance. Out of the 80 women, 95% wore masks in a proper manner, compared to the 78,89% of the 90 elderly men.

Musina Magistrate’s Court opens again

This follows the closing of the court building by the Department of Labour on 26 July this year for failing to comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and ensuring its employees were provided with a safe

workplace.

The department received complaints from employees who said they felt unsafe with the building’s dilapidated state.

Upon inspection by the department, the court building was indeed found to be in poor form, with the ceiling on the verge of collapse in certain places and dangerous, open wires at others.

Staff members were ordered to vacate immediately until these dangers had been cor-

rected.

According to the PSA, six contractors were appointed and are currently addressing all highlighted problems, among others the toilets and plumbing, tiles, leaking roof, electricity, and Internet connections and networks.

The court building was inspected again by the departments of Employment and Labour, Public Works, and Justice on 6 August, and the green light was given. The court’s doors were opened on

Wednesday, 11 August 2021, to gradually get back into full operation again.

The PSA was further informed that the regional office is busy with the procurement of mobile offices, as the building lacks adequate office space.

To ensure that employees are working under conducive and safe conditions to promote their health and safety, the PSA will continue to monitor the situation.

Women can change the world Phalaphala FM’s Women’s Day show, Nne navhone, aired on Monday and, presented

The show skewed towards women issues and addressed topics on family, health, beauty tips, disability, finances, etiquette, and other lifestyle-related issues. The broadcast, said the station’s programme manager, Ms Sharon Ravele, was aimed at empowering women.

The station invited five ladies from different backgrounds and industries this year to join and participate in the discussion around the Women’s Day theme.

“Our country celebrates National Women’s Month in August each year. We also pay tribute to the more than 20 000 women who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956 in protest against the extension of the pass laws on women; a system meant to control women even further, to reduce women to passive beings and at the mercy of men,” Ravele said.

Businesswoman Ms Phindulo Munyai said the time for sleep anymore was over as women also had skills and knowledge that could make them successful in the business sector. She encouraged women to start their own businesses, so that they can be self-reliant. She said that women should break sexual barriers and strive to engage themselves in different business opportunities available in the country – even the former men-only job opportunities.

She promised to draw up business plans for women from the village, free of charge. “Women are needed to bring transformation in their families and communities. They must have integrity, perseverance, and be honest in all that they do because it is women with those characteristics who will be able to build a better nation.”

Ramathavha said that, since the government has already empowered women, they must work with confidence in themselves, and in the spirit of working as a collective team, they could create many jobs. The aim of the event, she said, was to celebrate women of good quality and strength, community leaders and influencers who were capable of changing the world.

Jazz artist’s album is a must-have

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho The multi-award-winning jazz artist from Siloam, Ndivhuho NL, has his name firmly embedded in southern Africa’s music spheres. That he is a successful singer and music composer is small wonder, considering that he holds an honours degree in music from the University of Venda.

His latest full-length album, Silent but Muted, was released just last week and comprises seven tracks, namely Midzini Vhutshiloni, Silent but Muted (title track), Ndi Dzula Ndi Nae, Vhubvoni Thohoyandou (featuring Naledzani Netshirembe), Oh Yes Push Push, Mme Anga, and Iwe Mbava.

“Vhubvoni Thohoyandou explains why the town was named Thohoyandou,” he said.

“This, in part, is a celebration of our history and heritage as a people.”

Ndi Dzula Ndi Nae was first released as a single in February this year while the full album was being compiled. “It is all about love and dedicated to lovers around the world,” Ndivhuho said. “Mme Anga was supposed to be released on Mother’s Day, but we decided to reserve it for the full album.

The song is about appreciating mothers’ love and sacrifice for their children because it is precious.”

According to Ndivhuho, being silent does not necessarily mean that one has nothing to say, which is where the title for his album came from. “I don’t normally talk that much, but when given the chance, I have a lot more to say.”

Ndivhuho expressed his

heartfelt gratitude to the SAMRO Foundation for sponsoring the recording of his project.

“Thank you very much to everyone who participated in the making of the album,” he said. “Putting three musicians’ skills together for three semilive songs is an unforgettable experience. Thanks to Dakalo Nemukula (bassist), Mutshidzi Luvhengo (pianist) and Phuluso Mbedzi (drummer).”

The album was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Ananias Begwa, with Richard Matoro giving it its final mastering touch.

New vehicles to assist in vaccination programme

By Silas Nduvheni The chief director for the Department of Health in Vhembe, Mr Robert Sirwali, said that 19 more vehicles had been allocated to help ease the backlog of Covid vaccinations. The vehicles were procured by the disaster management department to assist with transportation, especially in the rural and farming communities.

“Many things within the department get shifted to assist with the Covid-vaccination programmes.

Our vaccination teams will have to visit rural communities and invite them to gather in community and tribal halls, churches and mines to fast-track our vaccination programme,” said Sirwali. He also made an appeal to the communities, church leaders and traditional leaders to allow the department the use of these facilities, so that as many residents as possible in these areas could get vaccinated.

Sirwali was joined by some of the

sub-district managers and health officials when the new vehicles were handed over to the drivers and nurses at the parking lot of the Department of Health’s office in Thohoyandou on Thursday, 5 August.

The drivers were warned that they would be charged, should the vehicles be used for any other purpose than the vaccination programme.

Ms Virginia Masungwini, one of the sub-district managers who also received a vehicle for her vaccination team, said that they would now be able to cover most of the rural villages that had previously been difficult to reach, and should meet their target with the help of the new vehicles.

“We had to share vehicles among our vaccination teams, which caused great delays in reaching the vaccination points in time. The new vehicles will definitely make things a lot easier for us,” Masungwini said.

“Life is tough in my shack,” says Mkhondo

By Kaizer Nengovhela Going to bed on an empty stomach is nothing unusual for Mpho “Mkhondo” Mudau of Gogobole, who lives in a dilapidated shack with no proper windows and a leaking roof that often gets blown off by strong winds.

Mpho is suffering from a mental instability and lives alone. Peering into his shack, one can see no bed, no cooking pot or stove, only a pile of flimsy, torn blankets. People often see him walking aimlessly around town, talking to himself.

Because of his mental state, he has no job, and no-one ever offers to help

him, because people say he is “crazy”. But Mpho has his clear-minded moments, when his senseless talking actually makes a lot of sense.

Limpopo Mirror caught up with him recently and asked him about the life he leads. Mpho told the correspondent that he had just about given up on life as it held nothing precious for him anymore.

“Life is tough here. I sometimes go without food for three days at a time.”

He has not bothered to apply for an RDP house because he does not even have an ID book. “There are some villagers who don’t deserve to get RDP houses, but they have been allocated

houses, while I almost live out in the open. I have learnt to accept life as a bitter struggle because there is nothing else for me to do. I thought life would change in the democratic government, but the poor get poorer as the rich get richer,” he said, and hearing the “crazy” man speak like this feels almost eerie.

Then he gets that far-off look in his eyes again, and the conversation ends.

What he clearly needs, though, is food, clothes, blankets and a decent shelter. Community members who wish to open their hearts and assist the struggling man can pay him a visit at Gogobole or call 083 503 4907 or 060 645 5813.

Vuka Hungry Tigers were the laughingstock of the tournament. Apart from the fact that they failed to deposit even a single point into their account, Hungry Tigers conceded the most goals in the tournament. Their goalkeeper, Simon Moshalane, watched helplessly as the opposition scored a total of 27 goals against them. To prove that they were not well prepared for the tournament, Hungry Tigers scored the fewest goals - only seven in the four matches they played. Two red cards were flashed throughout the tournament. The keeper of Hungry Tigers, Simon Moshalane, and Peter Aphane of Emmanuel FC were given their marching orders for dangerous play.

Internationally, Mudimeli commands high respect from fellow professionals who know his worth. Mudimeli is a professional athlete who competes in 200m and 400m races. At one stage he was ranked 142nd in the world in the 200m sprint. His best time in this item was achieved in March 2020 in Pretoria when he finished in 20,78 seconds. In the 400m, he twice recorded a time of 46,62 seconds in 2019.

Unfortunately, Mudimeli incurred a muscle injury that put him off track while he was preparing for the World Relay Race in Poland. “I also missed another race that was supposed to take place in Japan because of the injury. That was a great setback for me, and I also had to cancel the races that I was supposed to take part in Jamaica and Switzerland. Over and above that, the hard lockdown has made things difficult for me as I was not getting an income because a lot of races were cancelled. Hungry Lions unable to evade the scope of Vondwe XI’s Bullets

By Kaizer Nengovhela Vondwe XI Bullets were too strong in the SAB promotional playoff match when they overpowered Vuka Hungry Lions 3-1 at the Thohoyandou Stadium on Saturday.

The referee flashed the first yellow card only 10 minutes into the game. Tshepo Mohale of Lions obstructed Rotondwa Ramela just outside the box and this did not escape the referee’s attention.

Bullets missed an easy scoring opportunity in the 17th minute. Their centre forward, Mukandangalo Nemutudi, could not believe his eyes

when his volley hit the woodwork and landed outside the field of play for a goal kick.

Not long after this, Vhugala Negondeni’s close-range ground cutter missed the goal mouth by inches.

Bullets gained momentum with time and started to control the match. Rotondwa Ramela opened the score line in the 38th minute.

Bullets came close to scoring again three minutes into the second half. Emmanuel Gundula unleashed from the left corner, but the ball crossed to the other end as no one was inside the box to give it the final touch.

Hungry Tigers were reduced to 10 men towards the end of the game. Their keeper, Simon Moshatane, was given his marching orders for a dangerous tackle on Muhluri Mavunda.

Vondwe XI Bullets through to SAB Motsepe League Vondwe XI Bullets will be campaigning in the ABC Motsepe League when the league programme for the new season starts next month. They finished in the

The executive mayor of Vhembe District Municipality, Cllr Dowelani Nenguda, who was among the dignitaries who graced the prize-giving ceremony held at the stadium shortly after the final game, could not hide his excitement. He repeatedly stated that Vondwe XI Bullets had done Vhembe District proud. He said that he knew that running a soccer team without a sponsor was an expensive exercise and promised that the municipality would look into the possibility of assisting the football clubs representing his district at different levels.

ceremony, the president of SAFA Vhembe Regional Association, Mr George Kubayi, stated that Vondwe XI Bullets had proved all the critics wrong by making the grade in the provincial promotional playoffs in their first attempt.

He said that a number of teams, including Mpheni Home Defenders, Mukula Young Santos and Madridtas FC, had represented his region in the same event over the past years and come back with empty hands.

Vondwe XI Bullets won three of the four matches they played in the tournament and only lost one. They beat Vuka Hungry Tigers 3-1, Mamatho United FC 3-2, Greenhouse FC 3-0 and lost 1-2 to Emmanuel FC.

“Mr MC” will be speaking on behalf of Black Leopards

By Frank Mavhungu As a way to strengthen their communications and marketing department, Black Leopards Football Club recently appointed Mr Divhambele “Mr MC” Mbalavhali to the position of spokesperson for the club.

A quick glance at Mbalavhali’s curriculum vitae shows that Lidoda duvha had probably appointed the right person to the position.

Mbalavhali is a former presenter of Phalaphala FM. He was the presenter of the afternoon drive programme. He worked for a number of radio stations, including Univen FM and Capricorn FM, before joining Phalaphala FM. Apart from his experience as a presenter, Mbalavhali appeared in a number of scenes in the popular television soapie, Muvhango, way back in 2007.

He worked as a news-bulletin writer for the Venda News Desk at the SABC. After leaving the SABC, Mbalavhali migrated to Coca Cola South Africa, where he was appointed the Junior Communications Officer.
