“Alicia dit is reg, gaan maak ‘n saak. In die eerste plek, daai wat julle aan my verkoop het is nie ‘n Daxxie [worshond] nie. Tweedens, die Verbruikerswet sê as ek enige iets by ‘n persoon of instansie koop en jy gee vir my ‘n faktuur, is die eiendom die koper s’n. So gaan maak jou saak. Seven SANDF members denied bail Court News The seven SANDF members accused of helping to deliver stolen vehicles into Zimbabwe across the Limpopo River were denied bail in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court on 5 August. Rapula Reuben Maidi (49) from Ikageng, Edward Lepokola (48) from Sebokeng, Bulelani Danti (29) from King William’s Town, Ludwe Gwedashe from Gqeberha, Thembani Mjelo (31) from East London, Marks Funeka (49) from Carletonville and Peter Thato Namane (51) from Soshanguve were arrested on 21 and 22 June this year. Their case was transferred to Louis Trichardt after the Department of Labour closed the magistrate’s court in Musina, where they were due to appear, for health and safety reasons.
- Ds. Johan Marais (Louis Trichardt Baptistekerk)
In denying them bail last week, the court indicated that no exceptional circumstances had been adduced by the applicants in their applica tion for bail as the offence fell under Schedule 6. During the bail proceedings, the applicants did not testify and filed affidavits in support of their bail applications. The prosecution, in opposing bail, led the evidence of the investigating officer and three other police officers. The police offi cers testified that they had received a message that the accused were planning to escape from custody and that they were arranging to hire a sangoma to eliminate the investigating team and the prosecutor. The accused persons were using their mobile phones and later rented mobile phones from employees of the SAPS working at the police holding cells for R100. Between 2019 and 2020, the suspects, who were deployed at the Beitbridge Border Post to defend and protect the territorial integrity of the Republic of South Africa, had allegedly accepted bribe money of R15 000 per vehicle to allow stolen vehicles to cross the border into Zimbabwe. The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) was made aware of this and arrested the suspects in a joint operations with the military police. The case against the seven was postponed to 1 September this year for further investigations. They will remain in custody until then.

Four more water tankers to help deliver water By Silas Nduvheni The Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) has procured four more water tankers to assist with delivering water to rural areas that experience water shortages. Executive Mayor of VDM Dowelani Nenguda said that the move was a step forward for the municipality as the extra water tankers would ease the pressure of delivering water quickly to rural communities who did not have clean running water, as well as to hospitals and clinics that might experience emergencies of water shortages. He was joined by the portfolio head of tech nical services, Cllr Thina Mbedzi, and the newly appointed general manager of technical services, Mr Witman Maluleke, on Wednesday, 4 August, during the hand-over of the four new water tankers. “We understand that some rural communi ties have no water pipes and rely on dirty water from the rivers and wells. We had the challenge of having to stretch our existing water tankers
throughout the Vhembe region, and this proved strenuous in some instances,” said Nenguda. He said that the four new water tankers would be serving rural communities in the Makhado, Thulamela, Musina and Collin Chabane munic ipalities, and added that they planned to pur chase at least six more water tankers very soon. Nenguda pointed out that, as the summer season approaches, more water will be needed, especially by rural communities such as Ngovhe la and Tshififi villages, among others, that have no running water. The chairperson of the South African Civic Organization (SANCO) in the Ngovhela area, Khamusi Nthangeni, said living without running water was hard for them. They had been fighting for their own water supply for nearly 15 years now, without success. “Clean running water is a basic need that we are supposed to have access to without compro mise. We used to get water from the standpipes in our streets, but they cut those pipes. We hope that the water tankers will help us with clean water,” said Nthangeni.
New vehicles to assist vaccinations By Silas Nduvheni The chief director for the Department of Health in Vhembe, Mr Robert Sirwali, said that 19 more vehicles had been allocated to help ease the backlog of Covid vaccinations. The vehicles were procured by the disaster management department to assist with transportation, especially in the rural and farming communities. “Many things within the department get shifted to assist with the Covid-vaccination programmes. Our vaccination teams will have to visit rural communities and invite them to gath er in community and tribal halls, churches and mines to fast-track our vaccination programme,” said Sirwali. He also made an appeal to the communities, church leaders and traditional leaders to allow the department the use of these facilities, so that as many residents as possible in these areas could get vaccinated.
Sirwali was joined by some of the sub-district managers and health officials when the new vehicles were handed over to the drivers and nurses at the parking lot of the Department of Health’s office in Thohoyandou on Thursday, 5 August. The drivers were warned that they would be charged, should the vehicles be used for any oth er purpose than the vaccination programme. Ms Virginia Masungwini, one of the sub-dis trict managers who also received a vehicle for her vaccination team, said that they would now be able to cover most of the rural villages that had previously been difficult to reach, and should meet their target with the help of the new vehicles. “We had to share vehicles among our vac cination teams, which caused great delays in reaching the vaccination points in time. The new vehicles will definitely make things a lot easier for us,” Masungwini said.

Hierdie week, 25 jaar gelede in die
Zoutpansberger
Ander hoofnuus daardie week was ‘n inbraak by Bargain Centre in die dorp se hoofstraat.
Sowat R4 000 se gesteelde items is darem teruggevind.
The group of observers also made notes and tried to determine age groups for the people. The people were categorised into five groups, namely primary school, secondary school, young adults, adults and the elderly. In the five locations, only 10 primary school children were spotted. The observations were done during the morning on a school day, which explains the low percentage of children. All the young children wore masks in a proper manner. As far as the children in secondary school were concerned, the situation was much the same. Fourteen children were spotted, of which only one boy did not wear a mask. One boy and a girl wore masks that did not cover their noses. The secondbiggest group was the young adults, but was also the group with the lowest compliance. Out of the 238 young people ob served, 11 of the women and 31 of the men wore no mask at all. The compliance percentage was 77,39% for women and only 62,60% for men. The biggest group observed was adults. Out of the 292 people, 84,62% of the women wore masks in a proper manner, compared to the 65,14% of the men. Eleven women and 32 men were spotted wearing no masks at all. The last group, the elderly, had a relatively high rate of compliance. Out of the 80 women, 95% wore masks in a proper manner, compared to the 78,89% of the 90 elderly men. (The surveys were conducted by Thembi Siaga and Elardus van Zyl between 3 and 10 August 2021 in five locations in Louis Trichardt)
A quick survey done in Louis Trichardt indicates that women are more conscientious than men as far as the wearing of masks in public spaces is concerned. Out of the 724 people observed in different locations, 84,78% of the women wore masks, while only 68,16% of men properly covered their mouth and nose. Young adults seem to be the biggest culprits when in terms of not wearing masks in a proper manner in public. The survey was conducted in five public spac es. The first location was the corner of Devenish and Burger Street, close to the taxi and bus rank. Here, 144 people were observed in an hour’s time. Out of these, 64 men and 30 women wore their masks on properly. The people wearing masks not properly covering their noses were also counted. In total, 18 men and four women were recorded in this category. Because more men than women were counted in this group, the percentages are a better indication of compliance. Men were more prone to disobey the mask rules, with only 60,95% complying, versus the 76,92% of women who wore masks. The second location was in the parking area near the corner of Songozwi and Burger Street, near the alley leading to the post office. This location had a higher percentage of compliance, with 84,29% of the women wearing a mask that covered their mouth and nose. In the case of the men, the percentage was 78,57%. In total, 168 people’s actions were recorded, 70 women and 98 men. The third location was in Krogh Street near the municipal testing grounds. In an hour, 61 people were observed. Most of this group were males (50) and only 60% of them wore masks in a proper manner. Thirteen of the men wore no masks, while seven wore them under their noses. The parking area of the Grove Centre in Songozwi street (Checkers centre) was the fourth observation point. Here, 119 people were observed, of which 81,25% of the women and 70,91% of the men wore their masks in a proper manner. Interestingly, five women and only two men wore no masks. The men who wore masks in an improper manner amounted to 14, versus the seven women. On 10 August, the team returned to Burger Street, close to the taxi rank, but to a slightly dif ferent spot. In total, 233 people were observed, of which the majority (139) were women. The compliance percentage for women was high once more (89,21%), with only 68,09% of men fully complying with legislation. Eighteen of the men Thembi Siaga, one of the people who did the wore no masks, compared to four women. survey, shows how a mask should be worn.
Mapungubwe National Park adopt a no cash payments approach By Bernard Chiguvare From 1 September 2021, no cash payments will be accepted at the Mapungubwe National Park and Heritage Site. South African National Parks (SANParks) announced that visitors will only be able to pay for services and goods by using cards. Mr Conrad Strauss, park manager at Mapungubwe, said that changes had to be imple mented because of the pan demic. Some of these changes not only contribute towards mitigating Covid19 risks but also address the secondary risks that a business enterprise and its customer base may be faced with. The cashless approach will be made in a phased approach, with Mapungubwe National Park and World Heritage Site rolling out the first phase. “These interventions will assist in limiting the spread of the deadly virus through handling cash at pay points. It will further contribute towards the safety of our customers
by eliminating their exposure to petty crime that may result from carrying cash on their person,” said Strauss. “This will also mitigate aboveinfla tion price increases due to the enormous costs involved in safeguarding premises where cash is kept and the safe trans port of it from rural areas to depositories.” According to Strauss, challenges such as customers’ not being aware of this new ap proach, network communica tion downtime, power failures and other small implementa tion challenges, will be handled
case by case and addressed through implementing tech nology that can mitigate these occurrences. To address such challenges, SANParks may roll out other payment options such as instant EFTs, Snapscan, message notification and other forms of electronic payment. Customers are also encouraged to visit SANParks’ website at www. sanparks.org/tourism for more information. SANParks gave their assur ance that no customer would be turned away as it offered a grace period until 31 December 2021.

“petrolheads”, especially those who love tinkering with vintage cars or motorcycles, are invited to an outing on Sunday, 22 August. The group of vintage car and motorcycle enthusiasts plan on driving from Louis Trichardt to Levubu. Some of the group members will leave around 10:00 from Louis Trichardt and first gather at the farm of Fritz Ahrens, not too far from the Albasini dam turnoff. From there they will drive to the Beetge nursery in Levubu, where more vintage cars will be waiting. The group originally planned to visit the Bonnema tractor collection, but this will no longer be possible. The museum suffered some damage during a recent storm and first needs to be repaired. The event is very informal and open to all vintagevehicle enthusiasts. This is, however, a very broad concept, as cars dating from the 1970s and even 1980s are nowadays considered “old”. The idea is, however, to get owners of these older vehicles to get them out of storage and out

JUST... A COUPLE... MORE... SENTENCES...
Win R500 with your own photo-novel Our photo-novel competition has attracted its first couple of entries! Perhaps it was the long weekend, or maybe our readers picked up on how much fun it is to create a comic strip story. Whatever the reason, it worked and we received some excellent entries. The sad news for our in-house team is that they were beaten this week. In fact, they will also not feature next week, because the entries received were simply too good. There is a chance that our own team’s entry may feature in three week’s time, but only time will tell.
This week’s R500 prize goes to Dede Bessong. Our readers may remember Dede as a regular winner in our Young Writer’s competition. Clearly some people have been blessed with an abundance of talent and enthusiasm and Dede is one of them. Let’s hope this is not her last entry. The ice has now been broken, so there is no excuse for not entering. All you need to enter is an interesting story that must be told within the limitations of 12 photos. You would probably need some actors and a few props, but family members are normally quite willing to help.
GOOD MORNING STUDENTS! I HOPE YOU ALL HAD A RESTFUL WEEKEND.
(Promise them they will become superstars.) You can use a cellphone to take the photos or an expensive camera, it doesn’t matter. The photos will be used in black-and-white, so take that in consideration (get a decent contrast). Send your twelve photos, along with the twelve “bullets” (descriptions) to leigh@zoutnet. co.za. Entries not used simply stand over to the next week, where it will again compete against the other unpublished photo-novels (and the team’s contribution). This means that the sooner you enter your photo-novel, the more of a chance it has to be used. After the final date (24 September 2021),
we will choose an overall winner. The overall winner will win an additional R1 000. The competition is open to all residents of the Vhembe district. Entry forms can be downloaded from the Zoutpansberger’s website: www.zoutpansberger. co.za/comic
OUR WINNER: This week’s winner is Dede Bessong, a Grade 12 learner from Ridgeway College.

The Public Servant Association (PSA) says it welcomes the renovations being done to the Musina Magistrate’s Court. This follows the closing of the court building by the Department of Labour on 26 July this year for failing to comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and ensuring its employees were provided with a safe workplace. The department received complaints from employees who said they felt unsafe with the building’s dilapidated state. Upon inspection by the department, the court building was in deed found to be in poor form, with the ceiling on the verge of collapse in certain places and dangerous, open wires at others. Staff members were ordered to vacate immediately until these dangers had been corrected.
According to the PSA, six contractors were appointed and are currently addressing all highlighted problems, among others the toilets and plumbing, tiles, leaking roof, electricity, and Internet connections and networks. The court building was inspected again by the departments of Employment and Labour, Public Works, and Justice on 6 August, and the green light was given. The court’s doors were opened on Wednesday, 11 August 2021, to gradually get back into full operation again. The PSA was further informed that the regional office is busy with the procurement of mobile offices, as the building lacks adequate office space. To ensure that employees are working under conducive and safe conditions to promote their health and safety, the PSA will continue to moni tor the situation.

Cabbage Pie with a Twist
By Denise van Bergen Okay, so cabbage is not exactly a vegetable that falls into everyone’s taste, but Adélle Burger really loves it and is constantly looking out for new ways to prepare it. One evening, whilst perusing online recipes, “The LAZIEST Cabbage Pie” popped up and instantly drew her interest. So, she tweaked the recipe a little from the original, combining in essence the components of a cabbage fritter in this cabbage pie. She says that it has become a quick go-to recipe that surprisingly seems to please the crowd - even those who claim to not be fond of cabbage. Adélle adores cooking and rarely follows a recipe to the letter. To her, improvisation is the way to go, and that is why her recipe has a “twist” to it. Ingredients for the filling: 4 eggs 150g sour cream 70g Hellman’s mayonnaise 1 tsp salt 1 cup flour 2 tsp baking powder ½ a cabbage, finely chopped 1 carrot, grated 100g feta 2 spring onions, finely chopped 10 pitted olives, roughly chopped 5 sweet piquant peppers, finely chopped ½ small onion, finely chopped 2 tsp chilli flakes ½ tsp freshly ground coriander ½ tsp freshly ground aniseed 50ml melted butter
Foto verskaf.
Instructions: Adélle Burger Pre-heat oven to 180°C. Sift the salt, flour and baking powder together. Mix the eggs, sour cream and mayonnaise together. Sift the flour mixture over the egg mixture and mix well. Set the dough aside. In a separate bowl, mix the chopped cabbage, carrot, spring onion, onion, olives, peppers, chilli flakes, coriander, and aniseed together. Grease a deep, oven-proof dish and add the cabbage mixture. Pour the melted butter over the mixture. Pour the dough over the cabbage mixture and bake for 30 minutes. Serve hot as a side dish or as a meal on its own. Serves 4 people. Note: If you want, you could also top the pie with grated cheese and bake until the cheese has melted. Adélle Burger was born in the beautiful Jacaranda city (Pretoria, Gauteng). She is often asked why she speaks to people in English when her surname is very clearly Afrikaans. The reason for that is that her folks had decided to send her and her brother to English schools from the onset and now, she says, English is just the easier and more comfortable language for her to communicate in. After completing her BSc Genetics degree at Tukkies, she went on to further her studies at Rhodes University in Grahamstown in the Cape. In 2015, she got an opportunity to pursue further research at Univen in Thohoyandou, where she was eventually employed as a full-time lecturer in biochemistry, and she has called Louis Trichardt “home” ever since. Adélle absolutely loves being surrounded by the trees and lush greenery that grow so abundantly in the Limpopo. She enjoys reading and believes wholeheartedly that one can never have enough books. The challenge, she adds, is always to find the space for all these books. One of her most favourite things in life, and something that breathes calm into her soul, is being close to a body of water - whether it be a dam, pond, stream, the ocean or a waterfall, and then either to be in it, on top of it or just gazing over it. Thís is her happy place.

Annual Akkedis proves to be as tough as ever Deur Andries van Zyl The Soutpansberg once again played host to the gruelling Akkedis Mountain Bike races over distances of 15km, 38km and 70km respectively the past weekend. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the race on 7 August did not attract as many entries as in previous years, with the race not even taking place last year because of the international pandemic. Despite this, a total of 123 entries was received for the races, which included an 15km trail run this year. The main event for the day was the 70km race, attracting 25 entries. Once again, the race lived up to its reputation as one of the toughest one-day races on the provincial mountain-bike calendar, with a total elevation gain of just under 1 600m. Team Insect Science from Tzaneen had a phe nomenal race, dominating the overall podium place wins. Alan Gordon, riding in the colours of team Insect Science, completed the distance in just under three hours in a time of 02:56:54. Finishing a mere 31 seconds later was team mate Gunther Katzke in a time of 02:57:25 in second place, with Herman Fourie (also from team Insect Science) in third place in 02:57:59. Local cycling sensation Kombo Bere, riding in the colours of SYCD (Soutpansberg Youth Cycling Development), cycled home in fourth place in 02:58:20. No female entries were received for the 70km race. The biggest number of entries was in the 38km race, totalling 54. The shorter distance did not really make the race any easier for riders, with a total elevation gain of just over 1 200m. The race also saw the most withdrawals, with 10 cyclists not finishing.
The overall winner of the 38km race was Willie Willemse, cycling across the finish line in 02:24:30. Thirty seconds later, another prom ising local cyclist, Andani Raphalalani, came in second, in 02:25:00, with Ruben van Tonder finishing third in 02:25:30. As for the women’s race, the youngsters dom inated. The overall women’s winner was Anke Rood (Youth Lady) cycling home in a time of 02:38:17. Louis Trichardt cyclist Eliz-Mari Pre torius (Junior lady) came in second 17 seconds later, in a time of 02:38:34, with another Youth lady, Lianke Fourie, finishing third in 03:00:12. The 15km race attracted 32 entries, with Louis Trichardt’s young Aiden Bruce (Nipper catego ry) taking top honours by winning the race in a time of 00:57:04. He was followed by fellow young Louis Trichardt cyclist Peroux Du Preez (Sprogs) in second place in a time of 01:00:28. The first young lady home was Chantelle Gouws (Sprogs) in a time of 01:01:24 with Aiden’s sister Cara Bruce (Sprogs) finishing second in a time of 01:02:01. The remaining race category for the day was the 15km trail run. The overall winner was Lea na Swart, completing the distance in 01:02:35. The overall winners of the gruelling 70km Akkedis Mountain Bike race were (from left to The first man to cross the finish line was Casper right) Herman Fourie (third), Alan Gordon (first) and Gunther Katzke (second). McDonald in a time of 01:15:39. SYCD expressed a word of thanks to all who helped to organise the race and acted as spon sors. The main sponsors were Miami, Thomp sons VW, STS Bande and KFC. Prizes were also sponsored by GT Verspreiders, Seattle Coffee, Grill and Go, Palm Drankwinkel, Cycle Centre, KFC and Thompsons VW. A huge thank you also went to all the marshals and those manning water points. For all the category winners, visit https:// www.rorevents.co.za/results7aug2021.php.
