Killed in cold blood A 37-year-old man, Mr Albert Mulovhedzi, was allegedly stabbed to death at TsiandaGovha village outside Tshakhuma last Thursday.

According to the police, it is alleged that Mulovhedzi had an argument with a Zimbabwean national. It is said that the argument resulted in a fight, during which Mulovhedzi was allegedly stabbed to death. It is suspected that the two men had an affair with the same woman.

The spokesperson for the Levubu police, W/O Solly Mukhola, said Mulovhedzi was stabbed in the chest. The incident occurred at about 21:30. “We were alerted by members of the community about the incident, and when we arrived at the scene, Mulovhedzi was lying dead on the ground,” he said.

He added that the police had subsequently opened a case of murder.

“Our investigations are still continuing. We also managed to arrest the suspect the next day.”

Mulovhedzi’s sister, Rosina, said

that the family are saddened by her brother’s death. “We are in a very difficult situation, but we have accepted the loss, as he will never come back,” she said.

Dalington Mutangi (26) briefly appeared in the Vuwani Magistrate’s Court on Monday and the case was postponed to 25 January. Mulovhedzi will be laid to rest at the local cemetery in the village tomorrow (Saturday).

Success comes after hard work ... These were the remarks by Mukhethwa Jeofrey Murodvha, who was Limpopo’s overall best Grade 12 pupil, according to the 2011 matric results. Nationally he was in the top ten.

Murodovha, who hails from Dzanani township, formerly known as Makhado-Biaba in the Makhado Municipal area, was a pupil at Mbilwi High. He obtained 100% in physical science, 99% in mathematics, 93% in life sciences,

92% in geography, 96% in life orientation, 88% in Tshivenda (home language), 92% in English (first additional language) and 84% in maths paper 3.

Asked about the secret behind his outstanding performance, Murodovha said that time management, discipline and hard work were the most important things that had made him achieve good results.

He said that his success was due to the grace of God. He added that, had it not been for the support he got from both the teachers and his parents, he could have not made it. Murodovha expressed special appreciation toward Rabali’s El-Shaddai Christian Centre for the support.

He has just jetted off to Cape Town where he wants to study Actuarial Science at the University of Cape Town. He listed some of the challenges he came across during the course of the year.

“It was not that easy. Success comes after hard work,” he said. Murodovha, however, encouraged other pupils who had not made it to work very hard and not give up.

“Your knock-down is not your knockout,” he added.

He said that they should just study more than play. “They must just cut the time of going out to parties.

Watching TV also does not help, especially watching programmes that are not educational,” advised the soft-spoken Murodovha.

Mbilwi High school is still the best school in the province, having produced 256 pupils with university exemption. Murodovha said that he wanted to open an orphanage centre back home when he completed his degree.

“I want to assist the disadvantaged. I was not given this grace of excelling to shine, but to assist other people who need help.” Asked if he had already got a bursary, Murodovha said that there were many companies that wanted to finance his studies and he was expected to choose one.

Four family members killed in car crash Alleged brutality under investigation The Manwadu family of Muledane started the new year on a low note, when they buried four of their family members who had died in a car accident just before Christmas.

The emotionally charged funeral was attended by many community members, friends and relatives and government officials. The four were buried at Muledane cemetery.

Speaking at the funeral, Thulamela Municipality Mayor Grace Mahosi urged the community of Muledane outside Thohoyandou to rally behind the family for them to be able to cope with their loss. Mahosi said losing one member was bad, but losing four at a go was something difficult to fathom.

“We know these are difficult times for the family and the loss should not be viewed as a loss

to the family alone, but to the whole of Thulamela. While the family has accepted the tragedy, we are here to lend them support in their time of grief and we urge all to support them by visiting the family all the time,” she said.

She added that she was satisfied that pastors were able to help the family come to terms with the tragedy. “As the government we have officials like councillors on the ground who will always be there for the family and to help the family get by.”

Mahosi said she was worried about road fatalities that are happening on our roads. "This is one of those situations we cannot reverse, but there are some lessons that we can draw from this experience that would help us to take our lives forward," she said.

ily, Dr Livhuwani Manwadu, said the incident had shaken the family. "As a family we are heartbroken, but we are just grateful that pastors and other Christians helped us come to terms with the ordeal."

The accident happened at Modimolle on the Thursday before Christmas Eve while the family members were on their way from Gauteng.

Amongst the mourners were Deputy Speaker of the Limpopo legislature, Miriam Ramadwa, and former MEC for Safety and Security in Limpopo Mr Samson Ndou.

Those buried were Godfrey Manwadu (36), Constance Manwadu (27), Khuthadzo Manwadu (17) and Phathutshedzo Manwadu (12).

Four men from Musina are seriously injured and claimed that they were brutally tortured and assaulted by members if the Musina police.

The men said they were kicked, hit with fists, shambocked and sprayed with chemicals in their eyes and private parts by gun-wielding police officers, who wrongfully accused them of having unlicensed firearms.

Arnold Tshifhiwa Murema (25), Tshimangadzo Mbedzi (42), Enos Matsema and Phillemon Nelushi (21) said they had opened assault cases against the police officers who had allegedly assaulted them, but they had not been supplied with case numbers after two weeks.

“We know these officers very well and we don’t understand why action is not taken against them,” says Murema. He suffered a broken leg, sore hips and arms and said he hoped that justice would one day prevail.

Murema’s injuries are so severe that he could not even walk. He said he was asleep when police officers arrived at his home at night and broke down the doors to gain entry.

“They first had a quarrel with my mother and when I went to investigate, they started beating me up, telling me to surrender my gun. I told them I did’t have any gun, but they continued their merciless beatings. They forced me into a waiting police van and took me to the bush where they continued beating me for the whole night until I fainted. They later dumped me on the street about 100m from my home. I could not even walk and some community members called my mother, who phoned an ambulance to take me to hospital.”

Marema’s mother, Mavis, said she went to the police station to open a case against the police officers on behalf of her son.

“Instead, the officers on duty told me he [Murema] had to open a case on his own, but they were so kind to drive with me home and he opened the case while lying on his bed. We have been waiting for the case number since then and we have not heard anything from the police.”

Mr Tshimangadzo Mbedzi said police also came to his house and demanded guns.

“I told them I did not know what they were talking about. They started assaulting me and took me to a police car that was waiting at the gate of my house. They took me to a dense bush near the border and commanded me to sit next to a big baobab tree. They pulled off my shoes and hit me with a cane several times under my feet. They sprayed my private parts and face with a substance and

continued beating me until I could not walk. They then dumped me at my house and left. Although I have a valid doctor’s report and the names of the officers who attacked me, I have not received any case number. I think some people are trying to cover up for their colleagues for the wrongs they did.” Mr Enos Matsema says he will not rest until his attackers are brought to book.

“We know it is against the law for police officers to assault us. They searched my house and car and found nothing. They took me to a farm where they continued beating me with fists and a cane. I have also reported the case and I have a valid doctor’s certificate, but they are not providing me with any case number. Their cover-up will never work.”

In response, Lt Peter Mudau of the Musina SAPS said he would investigate the claims and urged the men to contact the head of the detectives at the police station immediately. He said it was standard procedure that anyone who reported a case should get the case number on the same day.

“We will surely investigate the claims, and if there is any wrongdoing, the law will take its course.”

Seven distinctions for Vhuhwavho

Vhuhwavho Matibe.

Dedication, determination and hard work proved to a rural learner of Mufulwi village near Mutale that one can reach the sky, despite being born in a rural community.

One of the top matric learners in Thengwe Secondary School, Vhuhwavho Matibe, got distinctions in all seven her subjects in the 2011 matric examination , paving her way to be an instant hero in her rural village of Mufulwi and surrounding communities, such as Ngalavhami and Matavhela.

Matibe (18) is among the top 30 pupils in the province and she said one must be focused on one's school work from day one. “We

used to have group discussions among ourselves and helped each other. It was not an easy task to study as I was forced to wake up early and attend afternoon and Saturday lessons,” said Matibe.

According to her, she and friends used to get good learning tips from former pupils through the Mufulwi Youth Empowerment Programme. She said that after her success, she had set an example to the young and upcoming learners that it is all about hard work to succeed.

Matibe said she is planning to register for an actuarial degree at the University of Witwatersrand this year and said the race had just begun.

“Limpopo can achieve a 70% pass rate” of Education to initiate programmes that will make this growth a continuous success,” he said. ”Credit must be given to the teachers who sacrificed their time to make sure that the pupils pass their matric.”

Cllr Itani Sikhwari, a representative of the DA in the Makhado Municipality, said his party was concerned about the perfomance of Grade 12s inLimpopo.

“This only indicates that the department is failing to improve the quality of the results,” Sikhwari said, adding that the MEC of Education was targeting 70%, but he failed to implement it. “He keeps on talking rather than doing the job. If they work hard, then we should have obtained more than 70%.”

The 18-year-old Mukhethwa Murodovha of Mbilwi High School was over the moon when the MEC for Education, Mr Dickson Masemola, announced that he was the top pupil in Limpopo, when he officially announced the Grade 12 results at Bolivia Lodge in Polokwane a week ago.

Masemola has lauded the fact that the provincial rate increased to 63,7% from 57,9% the previous year. Masemola said he believed his department could achieve the target of a 70% matric pass rate at the end of this year.

He added that pricincipals of underperforming schools would account for poor performance.

“We’re concerned about three schools who obtained 0%,” he said.

The top learner, Mukhethwa, thanked God for guiding him through his achievement. He said he Julian Venter of Louis Trichardt High, with 10 had been praying hard to achieve his goals. “I’m distinctions, is one of the top 30 pupils in the glad that my prayers were answered,” he said. Lufuno Mutepe, who obtained position three in the province, is also from Mbilwi High. She said that 2011 was a tough year.

“I told myself that even though it was tough, I was not going to give up. I focused more on my exams and studied hard.” Lufuno got A’s in Tshivenda, English, physical science, geography, life science, life orientation, mathematics and ma­ thematics paper 3.

Jailed for 10 years for robbing SA trucker

Makhado Municipality’s mayor, Cllr Mavhungu Luruli (centre), made some time on Christmas day to spend with the nurses and patients at the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital.

Three notorious, armed highway robbers, who recently robbed a South African truck driver of his cellphone at gunpoint along the Beit BridgeMasvingo road, were each sentenced to 10 years in jail.

Gift Simbabure (24), Vincent Bhonono (21) and Tawanda Bandadzo (20), all from the Dulibadzimu suburb in Beit Bridge, pleaded not guilty to charges of armed robbery.

They were, however, convicted by Regional Magistrate Owen Tagu.

The three will each serve an effective eight years in prison, after two years of the sentence were conditionally suspended for five years.

Prosecutor Johannes Tlou told

the court that on 27 September at around 21:30, the trio, who were in the company of the now deceased Munyaradzi Bisa, went to the rail crossing point along the Beit Bridge-Masvingo road.

The court heard that the four men would waylay trucks as they slowed down at the railway crossing point.

On the day of the incident, the victim, who was driving towards Masvingo, arrived at the rail crossing in the company of a local security guard.

When the heavy vehicle slowed down, Bisa climbed up the truck and removed the pressure pipes that connect the horse and the trailer, resulting in the truck’s developing a mechanically fault.

The driver then stopped the truck to investigate the cause of the problem. The four men, who were armed with a pistol and metal bars, then pounced on him and took a Nokia cell phone.

The complainant screamed, prompting the security guard to get out of the truck. He spotted the four men running away towards the bush and ordered them to stop, but they continued fleeing in different directions.

The security guard then opened fire and shot Bisa, who fell down and died on the spot.

A report was made to the police, leading to the arrest of Simbabure, Bhonono and Bandadzo, following a tip-off.

The firearm was also reco­ vered.

Suicide after argument over missing cattle A 16 year-old boy from Mugaladivha village outside Beit Bridge committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree, following a quarrel with his grandfather over missing cattle, police have said.

Supt Conrad Manhai of the

local police said the incident recently occurred at Mugaladivha village.

“After the disagreement with his grandfather over missing cattle, he was then sent to go and look for the family cattle in the local grazing area. He went to the

bush on the pretext that he was going to look for the cattle, but committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree branch with a rope,” he said.

He added that they suspected no foul play and the post mortem was waived.

Huge increase in border traffic during holidays Beit Bridge Border Post recorded a sharp increase in the number of travellers last year during the festive season, with statistics indicating that 51 601 people passed through the port of entry between Christmas Day and 31 December, compared to 18 222 during the same period.

The local regional immigration manager in charge of Beit Bridge Border Post, Mr Charles Gwede, said they handled the highest number of travellers on the entry side on Christmas Day, when 12 594 people entered the country.

“This year we handled an increase in the volume of both human and vehicle traffic during the festive season, compared to last year. Most of the travellers that we handled were Zimbabweans working in South Africa who were coming home for the Christmas holiday. Statistics show that we received 35 077 people on the entry side alone, a sharp increase compared to 9 725 during the same period last year,” he said.

On the departure side, immigration authorities handled 16 524 travellers, compared to 8 497 during the same period last year.

Gwede attributed the increase of travellers to the South African documentation exercise, which saw many Zimbabweans working in the country acquiring permits.

“Many of our people staying and working in South Africa are now documented after they acquired permits during the regularisation exercise in that country. They could now travel freely, which

is why this year they came in large numbers compared to the previous years,” he said.

The South African government embarked on the process of documenting Zimbabweans illegally staying in that country between 5 May 2009 and 31 July 2011, during which more than 275 000 applications from Zimbabweans were processed, while several others were turned down and some are pending.

Beit Bridge is reported to be the busiest inland port of entry in subSaharan Africa, which handles a huge volume of traffic. This is mostly commercial vehicles, including those destined for neighbouring countries such as Zambia, Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo, pass-

ing through daily.

On average, the border handles about 10 000 travellers daily, with the figures going up during the peak periods. “When we are not busy, the normal traffic flow of buses is 60, but during the peak period we get about 300 buses passing through on a daily basis. The infrastructure at the border on our side has a capacity to handle 4 000 travellers at a given time, which is why during the peak period like now, travellers encounter delays due to congestion coupled with a shortage of staff,” Gwede said.

As a decongestion strategy, the Department of Immigration had created additional counters where travellers would also utilize the cubicles situated outside the immigration hall.

Two Christmas babies for town It was all smiles and joy as two special, bubbly and healthy baby girls were born at Musina Hospital on Christmas Day. The first baby, named Lufuno (a Venda word for love), was born at 09:30. Her happy mother, Sarah Mudimeli (21) of Musina, could not hide her happiness as she anxiously waited for her family to come and fetch her after she was discharged from the hospital. “This is history. I never thought I would give birth on a special day like this one. I am happy that my baby is so special. This was the best Christmas ever for me. I would like to thank God for giving me this special gift.”

The second baby, Christina, arrived in the world at 14:25. Her mother, Ntsundeni Matsheketsheke (22), also from Musina, was over the moon about her special, wonderful gift. “I don’t have enough words to thank the Lord for what He has done for me.

I would also like to thank everyone

involved – my family, hospital staff and friends who kept on wishing me good health while I was in hospital.

I am happy that I have finally given birth to a special baby and I’m ready to go home.”

On hearing the news of the arrival of the two babies, Mayor Carol Phiri visited them at the hospital and handed them gifts. The gifts included clothes, blankets, nappies, wipes, baby catering kits and skin care lotions. She urged the parents to raise the babies with love and affection: “We are so proud to have these two angels in our municipality. They are so special, taking into consideration that they were born on a special day.

We wish them a healthy and long life and we have no doubt that they will become future leaders who will be able to contribute to the development of our nation.”

Both mothers thanked the mayor for her generosity in handing over gifts for their babies.

Tshililo finally gets wheelchair Tears of joy as orphans receive Christmas gifts The disabled Tshililo Mahuwa (12) of Gogobole received a huge gift last shortly before Christmas, when the Newtown Rotary Club donated a wheelchair to him.

He is in the care of his unemployed grandmother, Ms Marandela Mahuwa, who is using her social grant to take care of him. According to Ms Mahuwa, she is struggling to provide the boy with clothes and food. “We sometimes go to bed on empty stomachs. The pension grant I get from the government is too little to take care of the boy, who’s always sick,” says Mahuwa.

Mr Moses Ralubuvhi, a community development worker, who

was touched by the boy’s condition, contacted the health department to find out if they cannot provide the boy with a wheelchair. He finally contacted the Newdown Rotary Club and with the assistance of the Gogobole Drop-in Centre, they found a wheelchair for Tshililo.

A jubilant Tshililo expressed appreciation to everyone involved to provide him with the wheelchair.

“By donating wheelchairs and other devices to the needy people, we enable mobility for people living with physical disabilities, so that they too can lead meaningful lives,” said Dr Luciwle Blumberg from Newtown Rotary Club.

Computer diplomas for 49 Viva Centre students Students of the Viva Technological Centre received their certificates during a ceremony at Ramano-Mbulaheni Training centre in Tshakhuma in the beginning of December last year.

It was a happy day for the 49 students who received their hard-earned computer certificates. The hall was filled to capacity, while family and friends of the students ululated while the students ascended the stage to receive their certificates. The best student, Rotondwa Phalanndwa, was presented with a computer. The director of the college, Mr Victor Thivheli, congratulated the students on their hard work. Dangerous Darkies were presented with a cash prize of R900 during a ceremony that was held at the grounds after the game. Khubvi Peace Makers were presented with R600 and the teams that were booted out of the competition in the semifinal stage, Tshiseluselu Tiger Boys and Khubvi African Stars, were each given a consolation prize of R300.

According to one of the organisers of the tournament, Mr Christopher Randima, the tournament was a huge success, despite the fact that it was organized within a short space of time. Morgan Sefole’s brace destroy Matidza Benfica Morgan Sefole of Mabvuka Heroes destroyed Matidza Benfica, and he scored a brace in the final of the Fani Denga Mabirimisa knockout at Mabirimisa on Saturday.

The match started at a fast pace, with both sides throwing caution to the wind with their fiery play.

The Mabvuka lads timed their passes to perfection, but lacked power and experience.

The strong defender of Benfica, Maanda Mannzhi, proved to be a force to be reckoned with and he marshalled the defence very well.

King Mlatiro finally releases an album Godfrey Ndou, popularly known as King Mlatiro to hundreds of his fans, has just released his first album.

The album is aptly titled It’s My Time. Its sleeve is neat, with his picture and the dark clouds on the horizon.

The young musician was born in Madombidzha village, and still lives there. Thina Ndou (72) of Chikwerengwe village outside Beit Bridge was not asked to plead to a murder charge when she appeared before local magistrate Mr Carrington Karidzagundi. The case was postponed to 16 January and no bail was granted to the accused.

In denying her bail, the court noted that, due to the gravity of the offence committed, there was no guarantee that Ndou would not abscond to

Morale booster for struggling rural soccer club A struggling rural team, which is being run from the pockets of the players and officials, started the new year on a higher note when they received a new kit from a local businessman.

has been doing well despite not having a sponsor.

Local businessman Justice Thifhelimbilu Muvhali handed over a kit worth thousands of rands to the team at the weekend.

The official handover took place at the local sports ground and was witnessed by many members of the community and the

Leopards now based in Polokwane It’s now official: Black Leopards are now based in Polokwane. They finally moved to Limpopo Province’s capital city on Monday.

The club’s brand manager, Mr Tshifhiwa Thidiela, confirmed this early this week.

Thidiela stated that the decision to relocate the team to Polokwane was influenced by a number of factors.

According to him it was expensive for the club to travel about 100 kilometers from Louis Trichardt to honour their home matches at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.
