Frans is verlede Dinsdagmiddag, 3 Novem-
Wally has long road to recovery ahead By Andries van Zyl A long road to recovery still lies ahead of well-known local environmental activist and Soutpansberg resident Wally Schultz after he suffered a massive stroke on 30 October. The 65-year-old Wally was taken to the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital as he had no medical aid, but was, according to the family, discharged without being treated. The family
Taken a day after being discharged from hospital, Wally spent some time in the garden of his sister Dalene’s home in Louis Trichardt. Cheering him up is Baba, Dalene’s son’s dog. At present, Wally suffers from aphasia, a condition that robs a person of the ability to communicate. Photo supplied.
was then left with no other option but to take him to the Zoutpansberg Private Hospital. Here he was diagnosed as having suffered a possible stroke and Wally was transferred to the Netcare Pholosa Hospital in Polokwane, where he could be assessed by a neurologist. Wally had indeed suffered a massive stroke on the left side because of a blockage that is taking up a third of his brain. At that stage, more than eight hours had elapsed since Wally had suffered the stroke, making his changes of a full recovery less likely. Some good news is that Wally has since been discharged from hospital, although he is definitely not out of the woods yet. “He was discharged on Friday. At present, he is staying with me while recuperating. He is doing okay, but his speech was severely affected by the stroke and he suffers from aphasia,” said Wally’s sister, Delene. Aphasia is a condition that robs a person of the ability to communicate. It can affect a person’s ability to speak, write and understand language, both verbal and written, and aphasia typically occurs suddenly after a stroke or a head injury. “So, his brain is 100%, but he struggles to communicate what he is thinking,” added Delene. According to Delene, only time will tell whether her brother will completely recover. “We need to get a second opinion. He will definitely need more treatment and will most likely be going to recover with his family in Somerset West very soon. He might even need an operation, so he really does have a long, hard road of therapy ahead of him,” said Delene. This is a difficult time for both Wally and his family. “It is very frustrating for him and at times he gets very difficult,” said Delene. The specialist treatment that Wally requires does not, however, come cheaply. To assist it in paying the medical bills, the family set up a fund via the Click ‘n Donate website. The site can be visited by clicking on the link: https:// clickndonate.com/wally-schultz-stroke-recovery-goal-r-500-000/
The goal of the fund is to raise the R500 000 that will possibly be needed for Wally to recover fully. By Monday, the fund was nearing the R100 000 mark. “Please support the fund. It would really help a lot,” said Delene. The rest of the family added: “Wally is known fondly in the community as someone with a true warrior spirit and as a passionate and eloquent advocate for the environment and the local communities. With the support of those who love him and value his efforts, Wally will be able to get the treatment he desperately needs in order to have any chance of recovery and getting back to his old, energetic self, and the important work he is tirelessly dedicated to: saving the Limpopo Valley eco-system and heritage, training and activating the youth to fight for the future of our beautiful planet. Thank you so much for your help; every little bit helps.”

INSULATED SECTIONAL GARAGE DOORS
The driver of this vehicle and her two minor passengers were lucky to escape without injury after the vehicle overturned on the corner of Songozwi and Douthwait Street just after 13:00 on Tuesday. Bystanders had to break a small rear window of the vehicle to free the two children, after the doors did not want to unlock after the accident. The exact cause of the accident is unclear. Reports from the scene, however, indicated that the driver of the capsized vehicle had turned into Douthwait Street, but had to swerve to avoid crashing into an oncoming vehicle that was apparently in her lane. In the process, her vehicle hit the curb and drove up the steel support cable of a municipal lamppost. This caused her vehicle to flip over. The other vehicle apparently drove off without stopping.

REMEMBRANCE DAY On Sunday, 15 No-
vember, the South African National Defence Force, military veterans and civilians will remember those who had made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of their country as part of Armistice Day, also called Remembrance Day. At 05:00 on Monday, 11 November 1918, a document was signed that brought an end to the First World War. At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of that year, the guns fell silent. The war that was supposed to end all wars had come to an end, but not before an estimated nine million people had lost their lives. To pay homage those who died in the war and subsequent wars, Remembrance Day is commemorated annually. The Memorable Order of Tin Hats (MOTH) of Louis Trichardt will be holding their annual Remembrance Day parade and wreath-laying ceremony on 15 November at 10:30 at their Turbi Hills Shell Hole at 66 Burger Street. All members of the public are welcome to attend.

The ambassador of Mexico in South Africa, Ana Luisa Jafer, paid a courtesy visit to Musina Municipality last week. Among the places she visited was the Big Tree at Zwigodini village, Musina Municipality’s offices and the world heritage site of Mapungubwe. In the photo, Jafer receives a combination of Tshivenda traditional items, which include a reed tray (luselo), a traditional cloth (nwenda) and a reed broom (luswielo) as a token of appreciation from a member of Musina Municipality’s executive committee, Cllr Jeremia Khunwana.

Dina was ten tye van haar dood vir vyf maande woonagtig by haar suster Elna Kruger en haar man Frans.

Xitsonga translation app wins top MTN award Innovation A young software developer who grew up in Nyanai village in Malamulele turned heads at the MTN Business App of the Year awards two weeks ago. An application that he and his team had developed won the 2020 Fundi Best Educational App award. The application is quite remarkable, in that it uses images to teach people Xitsonga. Primarily, the app provides users with thousands of words translated from Xitsonga to English and is designed to help users learn the language in a fun and intuitive way. Users are able to simply take a picture and use the Xitsonga vision feature to find out what the word is in Xitsonga. This app also includes a function to access Xitsonga proverbs and idioms, sharing with users the wisdom

of the Vatsonga people. The head developer, Mukondleteri Dumela, currently stays in Kraaifontein in the Western Cape, but he grew up in Limpopo. He says that he developed this app purely to make learning the Xitsonga language easy for people. He needed four months to build the app, with many of the initial features already available on the Xitsonga.org website. He first learnt to use a computer when he went to the University of Pretoria to study for a Bachelor of Information Science degree, specialising in multimedia. “It’s overwhelming to receive an award of this magnitude. The fact that our hard work on digitizing Xitsonga has been recognized and is being celebrated instils confidence in our team to continue our work. It’s a truly remarkable moment for our team and Vatsonga as whole. Ndzi ri avuxeni Afrika Dzonga,” he says about his win. While Dumela is the founder and developer of Xitsonga.org, his team consists of Hlulani Baloyi (product manager), Hlawuleka Maswanganyi (lead developer), Ntshuxeko Ndhlovu (editor in chief ), Akani Maluleke (social media) and Irvin Maceke (intern developer). “In the coming year, we want to scale up the platform to include more African languages,” he says. The annual MTN Business App of the Year Awards, which took place virtually for the first time, celebrates the very best of South Africa’s app-development talent. This year saw an unprecedented 726 entries into these awards, 75 of which were apps submitted for Best Educational Solution. The category sponsor of Best Education Solution is Fundi, a leading education finance and education fund management solution specialist in South Africa. “Fundi aims to empower students of all ages with the funding, resources, tools and knowledge they need to succeed in their chosen vocation, assisting with access to the ever-expanding world of unlimited education learning possibilities,” says Khaya Mncwango, marketing manager at Fundi.

usiness
Foto verskaf.

daar nie nuwe verspreiding was nie. Psalm 51:8.
M
- Ds. Johan Marais (Louis Trichardt Baptistekerk)

On Friday, eleven Grade 11 students from Ridgeway College assisted as waiters at the Louis Trichardt SPCA’s annual auction and dinner. The dinner is a major fundraiser for the society, which does incredible work in our community. “Having our Grade 11s volunteer to work on a Friday night for a charitable event was really important to me. My parents were in Round Table and memories of my childhood are punctuated by innumerable events I recall where I watched my mother and father working tirelessly to raise money for all sorts of charities,” said the executive head of the school, Ms Dionne Redfern. She added that children learnt by watching adults, and if they saw charity, the hope was that they too would become charitable adults. “We talk about teaching the soft skills of kindness and compassion, and it’s by taking part in events like this one that our pupils learn the gift of giving,” said Redfern.
In a year that has been fraught with financial woes and a sense of hopelessness, times of crises reveal character. Many of the youths have felt directionless and without purpose as their year fell apart. “One of the girls commented on how much fun they had as a grade and that it became a bit
of a team-building exercise. Despite being tired, they all walked away knowing they had given to the community and that felt good,” said Redfern. She concluded by saying that she was proud to have their school associated with the SPCA and she was equally proud of their pupils for the work they had done.

Thugs are extremely dangerous and are always armed, hence the security provided by the Musina Municipality are not able to deal with that,” said Ralushai. Apart from the chronic water shortages, sewage spills are also a major headache for residents. “The DA has laid three complaints with the Environmental Management Inspectors (Green Scorpions) over the handling of waste water by the VDM in Musina over the past three years. Sewage plants have not been fully operational for more than three years, while it is a common occurrence for waste water to flood pavements and spill over into the Limpopo River,” said Fick. Regarding both the water and sewage situation in Musina, Ralushai said that the VDM has done an assessment of the Musina water and sewer system. “The municipality still needs to source funding to upgrade and construct the new infrastructure,” Ralushai said. In the meantime, the DA has called on the VDM to install fixed water tanks in strategic areas in Musina including in the central business area to ensure reliable access to safe drinking water.

Toni’s rugby dream bearing fruit By Kaizer Nengovhela Local rugby star and motivator Toni Marageni is launching a new non-governmental organisation (NGO), called the Madombidzha Sport and Recreation Institute. This institute is an expansion of the Madombidzha Rugby Club and will focus on giving children an opportunity to participate competitively in sports such as rugby, athletics, netball and cricket. Marageni started playing rugby at the tender age of six years for Laerskool Louis Trichardt. He later moved on to Louis Trichardt High school’s rugby team, then to Northwest University’s Vaal Campus and on to West Rand Harlequins. He was recruited by the Louis
Trichardt Rugby team. “I was part of the LTT Rugby Club’s second team that won the Limpopo North region league in 2019,” he said proudly. The Madombidzha Rugby Club was initiated in 2018 with the idea of identifying young boys from different parts of the country, teaching them life skills, and giving them rugby training. The club also partners with different primary and secondary schools in a bid to provide their young stars with valuable sports education. Marageni strives to give his best in everything he does in life. He is a motivator and developer to many rugby players around the Vhembe District, and is still an enthusiastic, hardworking rugby player himself.
“I had a dream of using new ways to empower young people and turn them into great sportsmen, so I had to stop everything else I was doing to focus on implementing my ideas,” he said. “Those ideas, infused with hard work and determination, are bearing fruit.” He encourages the young that rugby is played by all races. “There is no sport that was designed for certain colours. As black people, we are restricted a lot and undermined in this game, which gives us more reason to prove people wrong.” His message to the youth during these trying times is that they must find something that will not only keep them busy but also develop them as human beings. Being influenced into drug use and crime when times are difficult happens easily, so they must be strong-minded and always focus on the bigger picture, which is what they wish to be in the next five to 10 years, and make sure everything they do helps them work towards that vision. The Madombidzha Sport and Recreation Institute and Rugby Club are also hosting the Louis Trichardt touch-rugby festival on Local rugby motivator and developer Tony Marageni still plays rugby 28 November. himself.
