According to Deidré Carter, chief executive officer of Agri Limpopo, public participation is about exchanging ideas and finding the best solutions. She said the public was not given enough time, so [the process] must be re-scheduled for the community to voice their concerns and their support.

Five suspects accused of violating the sanctity of graves and corpses appeared in the Sibasa Regional Court again on 7 May. Erick Kwinda (39), Colbert Nemasisi (29), Mathadzhila Munyai (20), Daniel Nephawe (23) and traditional healer Avhapfani Nemungadi were arrested in 2018 after four graves at Tshitavha and Folovhodwe villages were allegedly dug up and body parts stolen.

The state witness in the case is a former girlfriend of one of the suspects, who allegedly assisted her boyfriend in digging up the graves.

In 2018, the girl allegedly told the community and police that her boyfriend had started with the grave-digging in 2015 when she was only 15 years old, and that they had stolen human parts.

The girl reportedly collapsed in court and she was told to get professional help. The case was postponed to 22 and 23 June.

“Whoever did that evil act to the aged lady needs to be totally removed from society,” said Cllr Percy Mashimbi on Wednesday. He was one of several people who picketed outside the Waterval Magistrate’s Court, where a suspect appeared in connection with the brutal rape and murder of an 82-year-old lady.

son Brig Motlafela Mojapelo said that the attacker seemed to have forced his way into the granny’s house. She was sleeping and alone in the house when the incident happened. Mojapelo said that the attacker had allegedly raped and stabbed his victim in the head with a sharp object and taken her cellphone. The body was found by community members inside the room, and they called the police.

A 22-year-old suspect, Remember Shivambu, was allegedly found in possession of the deceased’s cellphone and was arrested in connection with the rape and murder. He appeared in court on Wednesday (12th) and the case was postponed to 21 July, when a bail application is expected to be heard. He remains in custody.

Brigadier Mojapelo said that the police investigations would continue. “We have opened a case of murder, rape and theft,” he said.

A large crowd gathered at the magistrate’s court in Waterval on Wednesday. Mr Abel Khosa, a community representative who picketed outside the courtroom, said the scourge of murders and rapes in the area had caused the community to reach boiling point. “Everyone must stand up and fight that all murderers be removed from the commu-

nity. If something is not done now, we are all going to perish as a result of murder. We will never rest until we win this war against these cruel people, who live on human blood,” he said.

The incident came as a huge shock to the murdered granny’s family. The grandson of the deceased, Bongani Ndleve, said that his grandmother had lived alone. “She was a muchloved person, and we did not expect her to leave us in such a horrible manner,” he said.

“Imagine a defenceless granny of her age being strangled and raped. We were robbed of a very loving grandmother, who made sure that we got whatever we wanted,” he said.

“I have accepted her death, but I will never forgive the murderer. The murderer does not deserve to live with people, but with wild animals in the bush.”

Percy Mashimbi, a councillor from the Collins Chabane Municipality, condemned the act of rape and said that in a society where women should be respected and celebrated, such an act was barbaric.

“Anyone who commits such a dastardly crime is not a real man.” Mashimbi said the community wanted the suspect to rot in jail. “We want him to face the might of the law, and if it means to rot in jail, let it be like that,” he said.

Dopeni man killed during daylight robbery at house

By Maanda Bele The merciless killing of a 44-year-old resident of Dopeni village is still reverberating through the district. He was strangled to death by robbers at the family’s house last Friday (7th).

According to Limpopo police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo, the police in Siloam have launched a manhunt for four suspects who had allegedly committed a robbery and killed a man. The suspects allegedly entered the house, produced a knife, and demanded money and cellphones from their victims. In the process, they reportedly strangled one of the family members, Mpho

The Malimagovha family operates a photocopying business from their home in Dopeni. According to Mr James Malimagovha, his brother, Makondelela Fanie Malimagovha (68) and Fanie’s only son, Mpho, were at home when four men arrived, pretending to be customers.

The men pretended to admire the floor tiles of the family’s residence, when they suddenly overwhelmed Fanie and Mpho and held them at knifepoint, before tying them up with cable ties. Fanie was dragged to his bedroom, while Mpho was left in the hallway, where he was presumably strangled by the robbers.

The robbers ransacked the house and stole around R700, as well as cellphones, before fleeing the scene. Fanie managed to untie himself and went to James’s house next door for help.

James said he was home at the time of the incident, but did not see or hear anything.

“I only realised that something was amiss when my brother came to my house and told me they were attacked. We rushed back together, only to find that Mpho was already dead,” he said.

“We are shattered and shocked to the core. Mpho was an only child, and the ageing parents had all their hopes

pinned on him. They are not coping at all, and I cannot even look them in the eye; grief is written all over their faces,” James said despairingly. “I don’t understand why they did not just take what they wanted and leave, without having to take Mpho’s life,” he said.

The family hopes that the police will speed up their investigation and bring the suspects to justice.

Chief Lihalimane Dzivhuluwani Ralinala of Dopeni village said the community members of Dopeni were very disturbed by the incident. “We have never experienced a daylight robbery here in Dopeni before,” Ralinala said. “We don’t want community members to take matters into their own hands, so we have asked the police to also patrol and make our village safe again.”

The Tshivhase Royal Council also sent messages of condolences to the family. “This situation is intolerable and must therefore be condemned in the strongest terms. We cannot sit and fold our hands while our people are murdered and terrorised,” said the royal council’s spokesperson, Chief Luvhaivhai Tshivhase.

Traditional circumcisers support suspension of initiation schools

By Silas Nduvheni Maine Mashudu Tshikororo, a well-known local traditional circumciser, says he fully supports the governments’ decision to suspend the winter initiation schools this season as a measure to protect lives in the face of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

This comes after the Limpopo Department of Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs issued a statement last week, announcing the suspension until further notice.

Senior traditional leaders were urged to work hand in hand with the government and ensure that these regulations were adhered to.

Dikgale, said that the decision had not been taken lightly, but that everyone’s best interests would be served by waiting until participating in this important passage that young men and women go through, to become responsible adults in society, was safe.

He said that traditional circumcisers and healers were the custodians of culture and traditions. They would therefore adhere to the regulations and not be tempted into risking the lives of young boys by staging circumcision schools this season. “We understand the negative impact the coronavirus has brought to the nation, and as traditional surgeons we cannot risk the lives of our boys. If we do not comply with the regulations laid out by government, it can lead to deaths among our

young people,” he said.

Tshikororo has been conducting safe circumcision schools around the Vhembe region for 25 years. His father and forefathers before him had also been well-known and respected traditional “surgeons” (u imisa mirundu) and experienced in circumcision.

Tshikororo now calls on other traditional circumcisers in the province to abide by the regulations as well.

“As chairperson of the Limpopo House of Traditional Leaders, I can confirm that, as traditional leaders in the province, we are ready to sit down with all relevant stakeholders to address issues related to initiation schools and practices,” Dikgale said. He also warned that delinquents in this matter would be prosecuted.

Four projects are included in the 2021/2022 IDP draft budget for Waterval - the rehabilitation of streets (R7m), the upgrading of the clinic ring road (R1,2m), the upgrading of the cemetery road (R6m) and the refurbishment of the regional office (R2.5m).

For 2022/2023, the municipality plans on spending another R14,1m on the rehabilitation of streets.

Electrical network gets upgraded

By Andries van Zyl The Makhado Municipality has embarked on a multimillion-rand upgrade of Louis Trichardt’s electrical infrastructure to allow for future growth of the town.

The upgrades form part of a three-year programme, with two upgrades taking place each year.

The programme was kick-started at the Stubbs Street substation, which had a 5 MVA (megavolt amperes) capacity, boasting two 5 MVA transformers working side by side. This means that in the event that one of the transformers suffers a breakdown, the electricity can be switched over to the other transformer.

During a week-long upgrade process in April, the Makhado

Municipality removed one the 5 MVA transformers and replaced it with a new 10 MVA transformer with the aim of increasing the substation’s capacity to 10 MVA. The other 5 MVA transformer will be replaced with a new 10 MVA in the next financial year. This will allow for growth in the area north of Stubbs Street and east of the N1 (New Town) currently being serviced by the Stubbs Street sub-station.

The programme will, upon completion, see the upgrade of the Boompark and Roodewal substations from 2 MVA to 5 MVA, while new technology in terms of electrical switches will be installed at the Emmarentia substation. The municipality need to upgrade the technology because they are still using old switch gears

at the substation. The same new technology had already been installed at the Stubbs Street substation during a previous upgrade.

The upgrade will also see an emphasis on recycling. The transformers they are taking out will be re-casketed and reconditioned because they are still working. They will then be stored as back-up transformers in case of emergencies.

The new 10 MVA transformer installed at the Stubbs Street substation, as well as the others to be installed, was purchased and shipped from China. For this initial upgrade of the Stubbs Street substation, the upgrade cost around R3 million. This includes the purchase price, shipping, crane service and installation.

People called him from Gauteng around February last year and told him to go to the nearest hardware store to request a quotation for a full water station, which included a water pump kit, pipes, some tanks, and related necessities that would have helped him set

up a central water station in his village.

“Sadly, lockdown was announced, and because of that I had not heard from those people again,” he said with some disappointment. “Somehow I didn’t save their numbers correctly, so I cannot contact them.”

Mammburu relies on water that flows from a well in the mountains into tanks, which are placed in a central space.

During late winter, the well runs dry and the village is totally without water. Then they are

forced buy water from the nearest villages or from a handful of those who had drilled boreholes at their stands, until the rainy season comes.

“It’s a real struggle every year,” Madaela said. “But if those who had promised to help had really lived up to their promises, we would have been pumping the water from my yard straight into the tanks when the well starts to run dry.”

The pupils have had to make use of dilapidated toilets until now. The Department of Education eventually provided the school with four mobile toilets while the contractors were in the process of building the ablution blocks, but the situation

remained dangerous.

Acting manager of West End Manufacturing and Distributors Mr Vuledzani Mubva said the toilet donation formed part of the company’s vision to increase an awareness of basic sanitation and hygiene and promote a healthy lifestyle at schools. “Giving back is when you give and nothing happens - no benefits for you,” he said. He urged pupils and staff to respect the new ablution facilities.

The chairperson of the school’s SGB, Mr Michael Khalushi, could not contain his

happiness. “We are extremely grateful to West End Manufacturing and Distributors for donating the toilets, which not only benefit the school but also the community,” he said. “What you have done for our children is a big relief. You eased a big burden for us. May God richly bless you, so that you continue to help us and our children.”

Vhamusanda Vho-Mulatedzi Sinthumule also thanked the sponsors. “We are very happy to have a company that understands our language that, as leaders in the community, we cannot do things alone for all our people. I would like to thank West End Manufacturing and Distributors for this wonderful initiative of providing the school with basic sanitation,” Sinthumule said.

As a young girl, Sarinah started writing letters to her friends, as well as writing love letters on behalf of her friends.

HaaNdi YellowMah, considered to be the prince of VenRap because of his authentic verses and unique music delivery style, is one artist who is the pride of Vhembe District.

Last week he released a music video of his signature song, titled Yellow Yellow, which is a concept referring to his stage name of HaaNdi YellowMah, which means “this is Yellow” or “here comes Yellow”.

“This song was released late last year, but we only did its video now, for you’ll agree for sure that the making of a music video is not child’s play – it’s expensive,” he said. “Yellow Yellow is more personal in that I am showcasing my love for the colour yellow and what it means for me. Each one of us has got a colour that says something to us.”

He said that, for him, yellow symbolised joy, happiness, and excitement. The song, which was first sampled on stage during a festival at the Bush Valley Gardens late last year, has become a favourite among music lovers in the district. “I continue to receive acknowledgements in most parts of the province, and I feel that it’s now the time that I start touring those other areas and giving them my music. My music is proving to be getting a warm reception.”

“This is my first nomination ever, and I have received the good news with a happy heart,” he said.

“As artists, we work very hard and nominations for any prestigious award means a lot to us.”

Darkface has been on a mission to promote the VenRap genre and his contribution towards the Venrap music genre cannot go unnoticed. He feels the time has come for the music industry to notice him for the talent that he possesses as an artist.

“I have been singing for the past 18 years, but I started doing it professionally in 2019,” he said. “What I discovered as a singer was that one needs to be creative and write

one’s original songs, so that the very songs get to be appealing to those who buy and appreciate our music.”

He came to realise that music had become his soul food. He added that, in the Venrap genre, they did not just utter verses or lyrics, but they were in the industry as artists who wanted to contribute towards the building of communities. “We need to strengthen the moral fibre, so that we know that we have a sound society,” he said Music played a huge role in shaping his perception of the world. “Different songs carry different messages,” he said. “If you are able to accept the messages that are positive, you then get to have a formed worldview. Vendaboy Poet finally releases his latest poetry-set-to-music album, Ndavhuko

The album focuses on promoting and preserving heritage, culture, traditions, and indigenous education, and comprises 19 tracks, including African unity, Tendani, Vhurendi avhungafi, Motjatjie,

Nndaa, Thobela, and Aheee.

Vendaboy Poet was born in Ha-Nthabalala village. He matriculated at Nthabiseng High, and in 2008 started writing and reciting poetry. He is multilingual and recites his poetry in six different languages - Sepedi, Tshivenda, Tsonga, IsiZulu, IsiXhosa, and English.

He obtained his diploma in Human Resource Management from the Central Johannesburg College (CJC), where he initiated poetry sessions and created a strong base for many other poets who joined his movement of taking poetry to the people.

“In CJC, I was nicknamed ‘Rrrrr nga mikosi’ – which was a signature I used to open or close most of my poems,” he said.

In February 2018, Vendaboy Poet released a very popular single, Muphuresidente, which was dedicated to the current South African President, Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa, and performed the poem to him on a British Airways flight en route to Durban. “It was a surprise perfor-

mance arranged by British Airways,” he said. “I felt very honoured to have been granted the opportunity to honour our president.”

Vendaboy Poet had been recognised several times for his poetry music and has won five awards, including Best Poet at the Tshivenda Music Awards (TSHIMA) in 2012 and Best Praise Poet at the South African Traditional Music Awards in 2018.

“I feel fulfilled as a poet and am proud to be able to say that my work gets recognition,” he said. “I use my poetic gift to voice many of the challenges faced in communities today, and people love it.”

As one of Vhembe’s foremost poets, he was among the crowd who attended the late Lufuno Mavhunga’s funeral recently, where he was asked to perform an emotional poem as tribute to the young girl, who had committed suicide as a result of bullying.

Rampfumedzi, who is a talented former music compiler, grew up steeped in different genres of music at home and said that this was the reason why he had such a deep love for music.

“When I reached high school, I had developed a strong love for music,” he said. “Even though I did not have a noticeable aptitude for making music, I had this unquenchable fire that kept music alive in my soul.”

After completing his Grade 12, Rampfumedzi went to study sound engineering at a college in Pretoria. Sometimes he would go to the Rainbow FM studios and ask presenters and technicians many questions about the radio industry. “I finally joined Univen FM as a music compiler,” he said. “Later on, I was made programme manager and acting station manager.” He saw an advert for a position at Phalaphala FM and applied.

“I could not resist the opportunity to join Phalaphala FM, because I had wanted to expose my talent to the public for a long time. I took the bull by the horns, because I am not afraid to face new challenges in life. I make sure that the listeners are also part of the music played in every show at the station. I also accept constructive criticism, and this makes me more popular with my listeners.”

He confessed that his love for soccer had nearly made him leave school for good. “I loved soccer a lot, and I was nearly swayed from school by my involvement in soccer,” he said. “I played with big names who are now playing in the PSL. However, at some stage my family was worried about my loving soccer and focusing on it so much, because they wanted me to have some education.”

“There is still more to offer to my community. I did not allow fame to go to my head, but I gave myself more time to read my books. My secrets for success are hard work, effective time management, and the desire to succeed,” he added. “I have always believed that, no matter how many shots I have missed, I’m going to make the next one.”

He urged the youth to focus on education instead of quitting school and chasing monetary opportunities that might fade at any time.

“Go all out and get education as a backbone, because without education you will get nowhere in life,” he said.

I am really hurting. I pray my daughter comes back home, so that my granddaughter can find joy in her life.”

The case had been reported at the police station in Kwaggafontein and the last time they inquired (some four years ago), there had been no news.

Conflict between traditional leader and Robert Mbulungeni’s SGB

By Maanda Bele The embattled Robert Mbulungeni Secondary School is facing yet another battle.

A site that the school had earmarked for development to provide in its growing needs has been sold by the local traditional leader.

Way back in 1983, when the Robert Mbulungeni Secondary School was built, the community of Thengwe Thondoni in Mutale had a vision that the school would one day grow. Unfortunately, the school went through a bad patch and deteriorating infrastructure prevented any improvement in academic results.

Currently, the school buildings are in a dilapidated state, with paint peeling off and many windows broken. The school governing body (SGB)

is trying to rectify the situation and has reached out to the Department of Education and the National Lotteries Commission for assistance.

In one of the latest setbacks for the SGB’s plans, a site that they had earmarked for further development has been sold to a businessman by the local traditional leader. This has resulted in an ugly standoff between the traditional leader and the community.

SGB member Tshitangoni Raluruli said they were surprised when they were informed by the traditional leader that a new development was being planned on the “school” site. “Where will we build our new classrooms if we get funding? We know that our people need jobs, but we should not compromise our children’s future because of this development,” he said.

Raluruli said that they were

not against development and did not want to oppose the traditional leadership, but they felt that consultation should have taken place. He said that they had already cleared the area and erected a fenced around the site.

Traditional leader Thanyelani Nemutanzhela said this was a misunderstanding.

“We consulted the relevant stakeholders before a decision was taken to sell the portion to a businessman. We are a poor village, and we thought a complex here would create jobs for our people,” he said.

Nemutanzhela said the area had become a haven for criminals who hid there before breaking into the school and the traditional authority’s offices. He said that another site existed where the school could expand and called upon all involved to come together and chart the way forward.

She motivates plus-size women and men to never let their size stop them from being anything they want to be in the world. “Go ahead and fetch your dreams,” she said. She finds the way some plus-size people even forget how to love themselves properly because of the external pressure from social media sad.

“I want to be constantly reminding these young women that there is nothing wrong with them or with their bodies,” she said. “They should love and embrace the blessing that God gave them – which is their ample bodies!”

TLPAO launched on Freedom Day

The TLPAO will be giving free basic legal advice and referrals to communities situated in Makhado Municipality and conduct legal

education (which is a common right) and basic concepts of law, especially in rural communities. “We formed this non-profit organisation (NPO) after realising that our people are suffering from paying hefty legal fees that they cannot afford. The objective of the NPO is to give free basic legal advice and referrals,” said Ramagoma Rendani, the secretary of the organisation.

“Communities should not still be struggling to get basic services like water after more than 25 years of attaining independence,” Rendani said.

They are also concerned that Legal Aid only assists a select few. “It (Legal Aid) does not give people any advice. They only take on matters that are going to court. Some people complain that Legal Aid claims to be swamped with work, leaving the people suffering.”

Community structures also welcomed the launch of the TLPAO. Happy Mudau from the Vleifontein Task Force told Limpopo Mirror. “We are blessed to have such an organisation in our area that will be able to assist vulnerable people in terms of legal issues. Before this launch, the situation in our area regarding legal issues was very bad. We believe this organisation will represent us in legal issues,” Mudau said.

A member of the Maila school governing board, Joyce Ngobo, believes that the organisation will go a long way in assisting them to build a primary school in their area.

She claims the community is in dire need of more classrooms, as most of the mobile classrooms are now in bad state.

Manavhela Black Aces were by far too strong for Ablex (Tornado) when they overpowered them 3-1 in their Safa Vhembe MMK League clash on Sunday.

Aces dictated terms for most of the first half. Although the team showed cohesion in all departments throughout the match, the performances of their strikers, George Setjie and Azwihangwisi Mathelemusa, were outstanding.

Setjie was everywhere, giving support to both his midfielders and making sure that his danger area was always clean.

Aces came close to scoring on three successive occasions, with Tebogo Makatu the culprit in all instances. He received a neat pass from Muvhulawa Rambuda in the 24th minute and fumbled in front of the stranded keeper. He committed two similar blunders before the referee blew the halftime whistle. The half-time score was still 0-0.

Tornado approached the last stanza with more confidence, forcing the home side to play with their backs against the wall. No one was surprised when Tornado opened their account. Katlego Machaka received a neat pass from Rotshidzwa Tshitangoni and blasted in a rocket from close range.

Madombidzha Try Again too strong for Arsenal

By Kaizer Nengovhela Madombidzha Try Again beat Madombidzha Arsenal 1-0 in a Safa Vhembe MMK Administrators league match played at the Madombidzha Grounds on Saturday.

Try Again’s victory put them in a good position to lead Stream E’s Group 1, which will open up the opportunity to participate with other winners from other groups in the play-off matches.

Saturday’s match started at a fast pace, with both sides threatening to score. Try Again missed a golden opportunity in the eighth minute, when their striker, Mulatelo Ndou, beat the keeper of Arsenal, but then shot wide with an empty net in front of him.

The match turned lukewarm towards the end of the first half. This was influenced by the fact that both sides were holding onto the ball for

By Kaizer Nengovhela Ablex United beat Ollesdas 3-1 in their SAFA Limpopo ABC Motsepe league match that was played at the Louis Trichardt Show Grounds last Wednesday (May 5).

Ollesdas was lucky not to concede half a dozen goals during the first half as they were out of touch in all departments. Realising that they were unable to match Ablex, Ollesdas started to display rough tactics. They did not get far with this strategy, as referee Olani Kwinda

warned one of them, Mohlapu Letswalo, with a card in the ninth minute.

Ollesdas should have been the first to find the net. Their diminutive striker, Siriti Seabe, was unfortunate to see his volley go a little wide.

Thapelo Mkhachwa scored Ablex’s opening goal, following a well-timed pass from Thompho Ndou in the 14th minute. Thompho Ndou was later replaced with Ramodi­ bana Thoka.

Ablex were awarded a penalty kick in the 24th minute.

Owen Thuto scored to make

the half-time score 2-0 in favour of Ablex.

Early in the second half, Ollesdas capitalized on a defensive error by Ablex’s Nkhetheni Maleboho, and Abel Makubela scored his team’s only goal.

Owen “Mshekwi” Thuto scored Ablex’s third goal after some neat interaction with Mpho “Fire” Mavhandu.

Evans Mphaba was a thorn in the flesh of the defence of Ablex. He received a beautiful pass from Evidence Modipi and shot wide from outside the box.

Welcome victory for Ablex United in final ABC Motsepe clash against VFA

By Frank Mavhungu Ablex United concluded their league programme with a bang. They beat Venda Football Academy (VFA) 2-1 in the final ABC Motsepe League match at the Tshifudi Stadium on Saturday.

VFA approached the game aggressively. That compelled the visitors to play with their backs against the wall in the first 15 minutes of the game. VFA’s fighting spirit dropped a bit after their playmaker, Rudzani “Zoba” Thabo, was reprimanded with a yellow card for a dangerous tackle 18 minutes into the game.

After their battle for league points against Supersport United at the Lucas Moripe Stadium outside Pretoria on Wednesday evening, Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila FC (TTM) have another mountain to climb. TTM will play two DStv Premiership League matches within the space of three days. Vhadau Vha Damani, as they are also called, will host Maritzburg United at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane tomorrow afternoon (Saturday). TTM and Maritzburg United are fighting for their lives and the result of tomorrow’s match is likely to determine the team that will either face outright relegation or partake in the relegation/ promotion playoffs, come the end of the season.

Should they manage to collect the maximum points at the expense of Maritzburg tomorrow, TTM will be out of danger.

TTM will have only two days to prepare for their next fixture after tomorrow’s game. They will wres-

tle for league points against Baroka FC in their Limpopo derby at the same venue on Tuesday afternoon.

TTM’s defenders, Diamond Thopola, Ndivhuwo Ravhuhali, and Alfred Ndengane will have a tough time against the strikers of Baroka in the form of Evans Makgoka, Richard Mbulu, and the former TTM sharpshooter, Nhlanhla Mgaga.

After purchasing their DStv franchise from Bidvest Wits FC about seven months ago, Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM) lifted their first trophy last Saturday. They beat Chippa United 1-0 in the Nedbank Cup final at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein.

Speaking to Limpopo Mirror a day after Vhadau Vha Dama­ ni were crowned the champions, the team’s head coach, Mr Dylan Kerr, was full of praise for his players.
