King Toni Mphephu Ramabulana is the rightful heir to the throne of Vhavenda Kingship. The verdict has refuted the claims by three senior traditional leaders, Thovhele Gole Musiiwa Mphaphuli, Thovhele Tshidziwelele Nephawe and

Thovhele Kennedy Midiyavhathu Tshivhase, and they were ordered to pay the costs for the lawsuit.

Before passing judgment, Judge Legodi urged the claimants to accept the rule of law and respect the decision of the court.

“The Vhavenda, like many South Africans, are peaceloving people. They must not allow the outcome of this case to come in the way of peace and mutual respect for each other. There was only one bloodbath that had happened to the Vhavenda and that was when Mpofu defeated Tshivhase and his people for the second time. This was between 1600 and 1800. It was such a bloody fight that the river was filled with blood and it never happened again,” said Judge Legodi.

“I made an order that the application to review and set aside the decision that was taken by the Nhlapo Commission on Traditional Leadership Claims by the first (Vhangona),

second (Tshivhase) and third (Mphaphuli) respondents is hereby dismissed with cost to be paid, including the cost of senior and junior counsels respectively,” Legodi said.

The three senior traditional leaders challenged the findings of the Nhlapo Commission, which was released by Pres Jacob Zuma on 29 July, 2010.

The commission recommended that the kingship of the Vhavenda nation be restored under the lineage of the Mphephu Ramabulana dynasty, in line with the customary law and customs of the Vhavenda.

In his judgement, Legodi said that the Vhangona were also not Vhavenda-born and bred but had come from somewhere in Mapungubwe before they had established themselves in Venda as the first inhabitants. “Inasmuch as Tshidziwelele Nephawe might have thought the issue of the position of the incumbent to the kingship was relevant, it was not,” said Legodi.

“The commission found against the house of Tshivhase that they didn’t establish a traditional community with a new identity, through conquering and subjugation, either similar to or distinct from that of the Vhavenda as created by Dimbanyika”.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the Tshivhase Dynasty, Mr Avhatakali “Luvhaivhai” Tshivhase, the spokesperson for the Vhangona, Mr Robert Rakhadani, and the legal representative of the Mphaphuli Dynasty, Adv Tsietsi Ramatsekisa, said they were still busy studying the judgment and they were still going to discuss the way forward.

According to Mr Luvhaivhai Tshivhase, the Tshivhase Dynasty was still worried that Judge Legodi had never given them the basis on which he had made his ruling. The Vhangona’s spokesperson, Mr Robert Rakhadani, said that the Vhangona would appeal against the judgment.

Attorney Nkhangweni Makhavhu, representing the Mphephu Ramabulana Dynasty, said he was happy that his client had finally won.

Cop retires after 33 years of service

Businesswoman donates books to library

A well-known policeman of Makhado (Louis Trichardt), W/O Jerry Mathebula, retired from the service at the end of August, after 33 years of service in the South African Police Services.

Mathebula, a resident of Waterval near Elim, was born some 60 years ago, at Ha-Piet Booi near Thohoyandou.

Between 1977 and 1979, he worked as a general labourer at the South African Railways and Harbours, before enlisting in the then Railway Police on 19 April 1979. As a Railway Police official, he was stationed at New Canada and Park Station in Johannesburg.

In 1986, the Railway Police was incorporated into the South African Police. In 1987, he was transferred to the Louis Trichardt police station. He worked in various sections of the SAPS. In a moving farewell, the station commander, Col Francois Ramovha, wished him well in his retirement. "We thank you for your passion and Col Francois Ramovha shakes hands with W/O discipline, which serve as a master copy to define members of the SAPS," said Ramovha.

A Vhembe-based businesswoman, Ms Fulufhelo Davhana Ramagwede of Shayandima, donated more than 150 books to the University of Venda's library.

She said she heard about Univen Library book project and immediately fell in love with it. "I had books which were just gathering dust in the garage. The books could cause a hazard, because they are just everywhere. If a fire should break out, it would spread easily and burn the house,” she added.

She said by donating them to the library, they could be of help

to the community. "They will enlighten our nation and we will have development in our area," she said.

She said books could be old, but the knowledge in them would never be old.

"Look at the mathematics books; they are old, but mathematics will always have the same basics. Books will always remain a foundation for education and we are calling all the youth to go back to the culture of learning and of reading books,” she added.

Davhana-Ramagwede encouraged others who have books

that they are not using to donate them not only to libraries, but even to crèches. "Education is the most important treasure that a person can have. It cannot be taken away from you. This is my humble contribution to education and I hope the little that I have given will also motivate others,” she said.

Ms Caroline Madzhie of the Univen library said she was humbled by the donation. "This goes to show that what we are preaching is receiving attention.

It shows that the community understands the need to give books,” she added.

Security guard dies after botched robbery A botched business robbery in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) ended in tragedy with the death of a security guard from Gwala Security.

At around 23:30 on Saturday, 8 September, a group of six suspects overpowered the 34-yearold Mr Prince Mbedzi while he was on duty as a guard at Eden Oil in Klein Street. His attackers gained access to the premises by cutting the security fence.

After overpowering him, the six men severely beat Mr Mbedzi, apparently with a steel chair. They tied his legs with a piece of wire and demanded money. The group of robbers proceeded to try and break into the business, but triggered an outside alarm and fled the scene immediately. Bleeding profusely, Mr Mbedzi managed to free himself and stumbled back to Gwala’s guard quarters next to the railway station in Kruger Street.

In the meantime, alerted by the triggered alarm, the armed response team from DRS Security arrived at the scene, only to discover a pool of blood and a bloodied steel chair. They immediately alerted the police and Gwala Security’s supervisor on duty.

The supervisor drove to the guard quarters, where he found the badly injured Mr Mbedzi and rushed him to the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital at around half past midnight on Sunday morning.

Returning to check on Mr Mbedzi’s condition at around 03:00, the supervisor was shocked to see how badly Mr Mbedzi’s condition had deteriorated, especially after he was able to walk into the hospital himself just an hour and half before.

He was drifting in and out of consciousness, had difficulty breathing, vomited and struggled

to talk. At around 07:30 that morning, news came that Mr Mbedzi had passed away at 05:00.

Hailing from Tshaulu in the Mutale district, Mr Mbedzi had been working for the security company since March 2009. He was described by colleagues as “a good man and a hard worker”.

Although this savage attack occurred in a crime-ridden area, some believe it signifies the beginning of an escalation in business robberies and housebreakings.

“We normally see an increase in these types of crimes in the period leading up to the December holiday season,” said Gwala Security’s Mr Nico Esterhuizen.

On Tuesday, Makhado police spokesperson Capt Maano Sadike said that they were investigating a case of murder, as well as attempted robbery and malicious damage to property.

“Is Batho Pele an expensive sick joke?”

At several minutes past two on Saturday afternoon (1 September), the only official on duty at Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital’s reception was sitting on the wall on the stoep outside the building, eating an apple.

Against the backdrop of an expensively produced, gigantic full-colour Batho Pele poster boldly extolling patients’ rights, an ambulance patient - the victim of a motorcycle accident - sat writhing with pain in a wheelchair at the casualty section, waiting to go for X-rays. He could not go without a file. Like the several other patients waiting at reception, he could not get a file because madam was sitting outside, eating an apple. Madam was on lunch, so everybody had to wait.

At casualties, a young man with a festering wound on his right arm asked for help. The clinic had sent him there. The wound had apparently opened after stitches were removed at the hospital earlier that week. On Saturday, it was obviously swollen and inflamed, full of pus and very painful.

The staff member in charge told him that only a doctor could help him, but no doctor was available. The doctor on duty had left for the weekend. They had

strict orders to recall the doctor on duty only for emergencies.

The wound, having originally been received more than a week before, did not satisfy the definition of an emergency. He would have to return on Monday to see the doctor. The fact that the dangerously festering wound could develop into gangrene over the next two days, thereby potentially leading to an amputation of this patient's right arm, if not attended to, could not convince this nurse that it constituted an emergency. “You must come on Monday,” she instructed the patient, standing there against the backdrop of the full-colour, glossy Batho Pele poster, which boldly states that every patient has the right to timeous medical attention.

As if to guarantee the total credibility of these rights, a tollfree telephone number appears prominently at the top of the list of rights on the gigantic poster.

Sharing the desperation of the young man whose future ability to earn a decent living might depend on the availability and quality of medical attention he so obviously required, I phoned the toll free Batho Pele number.

I tried. Again. And again. Every time my call was ended by a female robotic voice inform-

ing me politely that there was no response from that number: Batho Pele was not answering my emergency call on behalf of a desperate young patient. Probably noting my (predictable?) failure to receive assistance from the prominent promises of Batho Pele, the lady turned on the still wavering young patient: “Didn’t you hear me? I told you to go and to come back on Monday!” (This once again against the backdrop of that poster, which states emphatically that every patient has the right to be treated with respect at all times.)

Fortunately, at that very moment, a new team of real nurses arrived. One member immediately took an interest in the young man’s plight. Against the protest of her colleague, she insisted on at least cleaning up and protecting the wound until the doctor could give it attention on Monday.

For this proper nurse I wish there was a working toll-free (Florence Nightingale?) number where I could record a real “Thank you.” (But maybe she also saw the grateful smile of that young patient, when she completed her good work? I believe you did.)

According to the head of communications of the Musina Local Municipality, Mr Wilson Dzebu, Luruli was also suspended pending investigations into charges relating to gross financial mismanagement.

During the meeting of the council, it was resolved that, should any law enforcement agency institute any action against Luruli in future and money needed to be recovered, he would be personally liable for his actions.

Dzebu conveyed gratitude to Luruli and thanked him for his contributions during his stay at Musina Municipality. “Council also wishes Luruli the best of luck in his future endeavours.” Dzebu also added that the position of municipal manager would be advertised in due course. He was quick to point out that he had found the Greater Letaba Municipality bankrupt and without any financial systems running when he became their municipal manager in 2001, and after four years they had a clean audit.

“They previously had received disclaimers and adverse opinions from the auditor general. When I left, they had an unqualified report. If given the support, we can turn around and re-engineer this municipality, maybe even in a shorter period of time,” Mutshinyali said.

“He is the right man for this municipality,” said former acting municipal manager Mr Elias Mugari.

With an impressive string of academic qualifications at several national and international institutions, as well as more than 18 years of experience in local and provincial government, Muthsinyali indeed seems to be in a position to bring hope to a local municipality fraught with inaccurate financial affairs, critical shortages of water, uncompleted projects and poor management and maintenance of infrastructure.

Mutshinyali came across as a decisive leader with a sense of urgency.

The Musina Municipal Council accepted the resignation of its suspended municipal manager, Mr Abram Luruli, during a special meeting last Thursday (6 September).

Luruli served the Musina Municipality for the past 14 years, occupying different positions, ranging from mayor to municipal manager.

The council also decided that disciplinary proceedings against Luruli were to be withdrawn, on the grounds that he had resigned. Luruli resigned five days after he had been served with charges for a disciplinary hearing by the council. The disciplinary hearing was scheduled for 6 September.

Not a drop of water at Vyeboom’s taps The first thing that catches the eye when one visits Vyeboom Murahu-ha-Thavha in Vuwani is the dryness of the land. This dryness is seen on the ground around the communal water taps in the street corners.

Residents buy 210 litre drums of water at anything between R30 and R50 from motorists who go around the village selling water. A 20-litre bottle of water costs at least R1,50 or more. Residents say that they are sorely affected by the lack of water and add that water is

a source of life. According to young Gift Mudau (22), the community had reported the issue of the lack of water to the Makhado Municipality some three months ago, who then promised to send water trucks.

“We’ve been without water since January this year,” an irate Damelin student said. “You can’t supply water to people once a month and then think they will use it for the next four weeks.” Gift added that the municipality’s indifference and refusal to care for people will always create a platform for

strife between the community and the ward councillor.

In Vyeboom, only a couple of taps can be found on street corners and residents go there in the hope that they may find running water. Sadly, the water taps merely puke out dust when residents open them.

“We’ve got five dry boreholes here and we’re told there’s no water underground,” said VhoMutshekwa Mukhithi (64).

“We understand that, but they should at least bring us water sometimes or else try to drill other boreholes.”

In 2010, Vyeboom residents held a peaceful demonstration in front of the premier’s offices in Polokwane, where they asked the provincial government to intervene in the lack of service delivery in the village. According to residents, the march didn’t yield much in terms of bringing changes about the issues they addressed.

Cllr Phineas Mathoma (Ward 3) said that he was aware that there was a shortage of water in Vyeboom and trucks had been supplying residents with water at least twice or three times a week. “That’s short-term relief,” he said. “The Vuwani bulk water supply project will supply water to Vyeboom, Kurhuleni North and Kurhuleni South. Mpheni resident in court on rape charge A 32-year-old man from Mpheni in the Elim area appeared before the Hlanganani Regional Court held in Waterval in connection with charges of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and rape, on Monday, 3 September.

Erick Mukwevho allegedly assaulted and raped a 19-yearold woman between 23 and 25 January 2011 at his home in Mpheni village. It was testified in court that the accused had lacerated the complainant’s back with a belt and then fractured her finger with a rock. However, Mukwevho denied having caused the woman a finger fracture, but admitted that he had used a belt to punish her for not being at home. Mukwevho’s witness, on the other hand, testified that the accused had only used his open hand to smack the complainant

twice on the back.

It emerged during the trial that Mukwevho and the complainant were lovers and that she would normally travel all the way from Giyani to visit the accused in Elim. During the alleged physical assault and rape, she had arrived to the accused’s home on 14 December 2010, and stayed with him up until 25 January 2012. The complainant, however, testified that she was assaulted from the 22nd up until the 25th of January 2012.

Mukwevho was arrested early on the morning of 25 January 2012, after the SAPS had acted on information supplied by community members. The SAPS official testified that he had found a woman crying in the house, who then said she had been beaten and raped anally by the accused.

The defence for the accused ar-

gued at length and indicated that the woman had been manipulated by the police to lay an additional charge of rape against the accused. He stated that the two had had consensual sex after the fight, when they had reconciled.

Mukwevho had since pleaded guilty to a charge of assault.

The state prosecutor, however, countered the defence’s argument. He emphasised that it was evident that the complainant had loved the accused, and that was the reason for her travelling all the way from Giyani to Mpheni to visit him. “The victim was assaulted, raped and then assaulted again,” he said. “How could one do that to someone they love?

When the police arrived, they found her crying.”

The case was postponed to 12 October for judgement. The accused is out on bail.

Stop trespassing along Beit Bridge border The police in Musina are appealing to members of the community to stop trespassing at restricted places along the Beit Bridge border near Musina.

This comes after an unfortunate incident occurred near the Limpopo River recently. “A local person and a passenger were driving iand were stopped

by Zimbabwean officials and accused of being on the Zimba-

bwean side of the border,” said a spokesperson of the Musina police, Lt Peter Mudau.

Mudau indicated that people should refrain from going anywhere near the Limpopo river, because the act in itself is hazardous.

According to him, there is an information board announcing that unauthorised entry is prohibited and that “non-military trans-

port travel on risk”. Therefore, he said, any person who enters shall be trespassing and shall be prosecuted.

“This area is not safe, because you may be attacked by the magumagumas,” he said.

He appealed to community members and those who find themselves in and around Musina to act responsibly while going near the border.

Nine years for man who robbed pupils

The Vuwani Magistrate’s Court sentenced a 28-year-old man to 9 years in jail on four counts of robbery, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, assault and being found in possession of dagga.

It was heard in court that Ndidzulafhi Ashley Makumbe (28) had assaulted and then robbed school children of their money at knifepoint along the Tshirululuni gravel road on 9 March. The incident took place when the scholars were on their way to school at around 07:00.

He then spotted a 31-year-old woman and a pupil on the main road and ordered her to hand over her mobile phone. He then started to drag her into the nearby bushes, but stopped doing so and ran away

when he saw a group of pupils coming his way.

On 20 March 2012, the police took Makumbe to his home and found dagga in his room and he was charged for being found in possession of an illegal substance.

Apart of the jail term, he was also sentenced to three months in jail, with an option of paying a R1 000 fine.

Makumbe was one of the five suspects who escaped from the Vuwani police cells on 3 June. They had allegedly escaped through a hole they had cut in the veranda. Makumbe and Vhutshilo Rambau (22) were later recaptured and brought before the court on a charge of escape from a lawful custody.

Makumbe said he did not intend to escape, but he did so for fear of being killed by his cell mates. He was acquitted Ndivhulafhi Ashley Makumbe (28). on that charge.

KNP takes the park to the ill children The management of the Kruger National Park launched its annual SanParks Week in style, when they visited the Malamulele Hospital’s Children’s ward.

The management descended on the hospital on Monday with a load of gifts for the children.

The KNP’s head of public relations, Mr William Mabasa, said they felt that they had to bring the park to the children who would otherwise not be able to visit it.

“It made us sad to realise that there are children who are confined to their beds, unable to do things for themselves because of sickness.”

He further indicated that they chose to be with children because they are the future of the country and need special care. Mabasa said the visit was also to strengthen the age-old relationship with the hospital.

“Our staff use this facility.

When you move around here next to the hospital, you will see

our vehicles bringing our staff for treatment.

We would like to cement the relationship and take it to another level, and we hope it will prosper for many years to come,” he added.

After the formal proceedings, Mabasa and his entourage played with the children and also handed over gifts to them.

The hospital’s CEO took them on a tour of the wards, where they interacted with the patients.

Vleifontein resident celebrates 103 years A local senior citizen, Mr Andries Tshamulingwana Netshifhefhe, celebrated his 103rd birthday with family and friends at Vleifontein on Saturday.

He was born on 8 September 1909 at Tshifhefhe. He is experiencing hearing problems, but he has not yet lost his sight.

“Growing old is like going back to childhood, but I am still feeling healthy and strong. I always look good and healthy because my grandchildren are not abusing me. They are doing everything for me,” he said.

Some days, when he is feeling extremely healthy, Netshifhefhe can walk from his room to the kitchen without using a cane.

A family member, Ms Meriam Mudau, said they had organised the party to show their grandfather that they loved him. “This is a way of showing appreciation to senior citizens. Because I don’t want to see him suffer, I took him to come and stay with me

in my house, together with my grandchildren,” said Mudau.

She added that the idea of honouring Mr Netshifhefhe came after the children and grandchildren decided that they needed to surprise him as a sign of paying homage to him. “It is good to pay tribute to a person while he is still alive, rather than to buy expensive things when he or she has died,” she added.

“A family who does not have senior citizens lacks advice as they provide wisdom,” said Mudau. “When we were young, we used to travel for long distances on foot because there were no cars,” said Netshifhefhe. “The elders spent most of their time tilling the land for food, and young boys and girls were responsible for looking after the goats and cows,” he said.

“We spent most of the time playing indigenous games and that kept our bodies strong.

There were certain taboos that the elders told us not to do, and

I believe that increased the days of our lives.”

He remembers the old days, when there were no schools, clinics, hospitals and roads. “I would like more generations to know about our times, although I believe that I will still live for many years to come,” he added.

He also provided Limpopo Mirror with his recipe for a long and blessed life: “If you live a clean life, God will bless you and you will live long. Respect your elders and preserve your culture. Eat healthy food and distance yourself from alcohol,” he said.

Mr Netshifhefhe is a member of the Zion Christian Church and is outspoken about his love for God. “I’m here today because of the will of God. Without God, I wouldn’t be celebrating my 103rd birthday. Where there is God, there is life,” he explained.

He has five children, 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Group threatens to stop payment for water “Our view is that we should stop paying until such time as we have an uninterrupted water supply. If the supply is not continuous, it is not fair for us to pay,” the Makhado Concerned Group (MCG) told the mayor of the Makhado Municipality.

The group says that the frequent interruptions in the water supply results in poor meter readings.

“There are even readings of air, as confirmed by the technical director. The municipality has no means of separating the reading of the air flow compared to the water. We should stop paying,” the executive committee (exco) of the concerned group said.

The meeting with the mayor, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi, took

place on 29 August. “The mayor mentioned the six new boreholes, but he had no information on the equipping of the boreholes or the connection to the mainline. We expected that he would call the technical director,” the chairperson of the MCG, Mr Lawrence Makatu, said after the meeting.

That same evening, the group’s exco and some of their members met with a panel of the local AfriForum branch. “We are not going to be intimidated by politicians. It is our right to get services,” said exco member Mr John Madzhie at the meeting. He also referred to the electricity that is more expensive than in Thulamela and told the meeting that the mayor had promised that consumers would soon be able to buy prepaid electricity from chain stores.

The concerned group and the local AfriForum branch have forged an alliance in their battle to get the services that they pay for. “Our rights are being abused by those in power,” Mr Dave Patel of AfriForum said.

Concerning the MCG’s view of non-payment until the water supply is continuous, Madzhie said that the mayor had told them to write a memorandum to Council in that regard. “The concerned group is mobilising residents to join in a march to hand over the memorandum,” said Makatu.

The group told the mayor that they would go to court. They support AfriForum in their legal actions. “All parties agreed to meet again in two weeks’ time to organise the march to the municipality,” Makatu said.

The executive committee of the Makhado Concerned Group and some of their members met with a panel of the local AfriForum branch, forging an alliance in the battle for an uninterrupted water supply and other services. The meeting took place at the Makhado show hall on 29 August.

Six members of the Marhumeke family, Mudjadji Marhumeke (73), her daughter Maria Marhumeke and Maria's four children, have been sharing a small, one-room structure which can hardly be defined as a house. Maria said that she was unemployed and could not afford to build herself a house. She pointed at a mud-brick rondavel the family is trying to build, which they cannot complete because of a lack of timber, wire and nails. “We'll be happy if our government can build us an RDP house,” said Maria, her face looking pale with scabs from the cold.

Meanwhile, Maria has no ID book; neither does she know her age. She can neither read nor write. None of her four children receives a social child support grant, as they also have no birth certificates. The family relies on old Mudjadji's A new mud rondavel which the Marhumeke family is struggling to social grant to survive. “My 15-year-old daughter quit school in March this year because she had complete. no school uniform,” said Maria. “She told me that other children would laugh at her.”

“He was found by his two colleagues,” said Netsidzati, adding that the deceased had left a suicide note, asking his co-workers to call his wife and apologise to his wife for his behaviour.

Two in custody Two Zimbabwean nationals, aged 18 and 19, were arrested at Ha-Rabali on Sunday on charges of the possession of two stolen firearms and ammunition.

Two 9mm Parabellums were found in their possession. According to a police report, the two pistols were identified as having been stolen from Const Phiona Mathebula, who is based at the Vuwani Police Station.

One magazine and 15 rounds of ammunition were also found at their place. The suspects tried to run away from the police and one suspect was shot in the foot after several warning shots had been fired.

According to the SAPS spokesperson at Dzanani, W/O Lazarus Netshidzani, the two will appear in court soon. He added that more charges might be added, pending the investigation into the case.

Several campaigns to keep international border clean Zimbabwean and South African border officials operating at the Beit Bridge Porder Post embarked on another joint clean-up campaign along the Limpopo River last Friday.

The exercise, which coincided with International Environmental Health Month, was spearheaded and co-ordinated by the two countries’ port health departments, operating at the Beit Bridge Border Post.

Speaking during the exercise, the South African Port Health coordinator at Beit Bridge, Mr David Ramuthiugi, said the clean-up exercise was aimed at raising awareness among both travellers and border officials on the need to keep the environment around the border post clean. “We held a clean-up in June and this one was a follow-up, particularly taking into account that we are in September, which isInternational Environmental Health Month,” he said. and South African authorities and travellers the challenges of illegal migration. Illegal immigrants are vulnerable to border crimes such as theft, robbery and sexual assault by guma gumas.

“We also want victims of sexual and gender-based violence to know where and how they can access medical treatment, including temporary shelter at the IOM offices in Beit Bridge and Musina. We urge border authorities to be highly considerate and professional when dealing with illegal migrants to detect victims of crimes along the Limpopo River,” said Hassan.

Third album for music legend The tiny rural village of HaMakhuvha has produced an artist who transcends all categories, classes, and creeds through a combination of innate modesty and profound wisdom.

An English teacher at Tshikosi Primary School outside Thohoyandou, Thiathu Edward Netshikweta gives the world brilliant, timeless and evocative Tshivenda traditional music.

Among his fans, especially in Limpopo, Netshikweta is a hero, in the classic mythological sense. His music continues to have a powerful and ever-growing resonance.

Maninja, as he is affectionately called by his fans, is one of the most charismatic and challenging performers of our time and his music has been created from only one source - the street culture of Africa. His music is pure human guidance, in the sense that it is a public expression of a private truth.

The traditional music legend finally succumbed to pressure from his fans to release his second album. The album, titled Thi li mbilu (I don’t worry) was released three weeks ago, and it has already started receiving massive airplay from regional and national radio stations.

“I am happy that the album has

already sold more than 6 000 copies and it still continues to sell. I would like to convey my gratitude to all my fans who have been supporting me for the past 10 years. I will continue to give them good music because they are the ones who made me what I am,” he said.

The 10-track album has everything that traditional music lovers need.

These include tracks like Mudini wanga, Thi li mbilu, Pfanelo Dzanu, Ri tea u funana, Mudzia zwitshele, Dzimbava, Khonani ya vhukuma, Ndo guda vhutshilo, Tshidahela, and Vhomme ashu.

Inspired by his belief in culture, his latest performance at the Thohoyandou CBD a fortnight ago attracted one of the largest audiences of most of the local musical acts.

Netshikweta says he is working on his investment plan to plough back his musical knowledge to the youth.

“I will engage in a talent search and conduct music workshops around Limpopo during the school holidays.

My immediate dream is to establish a recording company that will help to unearth, mould and give an opportunity to rural youths to realize their music potential.”

New shoes for pupils of Folovhodwe

Mayor Cllr David Mutavhatsindi hand over a book to a pupil of Masungulo Primary, Nhlamulo Baloyi, while other pupils look on.

More than 150 poor pupils from Folovhodwe Primary and Dzimauli Secondary School at Folovhodwe village will no longer have to go to school barefoot and without proper uniforms, thanks to the Vhembe District Municipality and a private donor.

“As a district municipality, we want to invest in the future of promising poor pupils by encouraging them to take education seriously. Children are our future leaders and they must be encouraged to work hard and regard education as weapon to defeat poverty and unemployment,” said Executive Mayor Tshitereke Matibe dur-

ing a ceremony at Folovhodwe last Wednesday.

Matibe said it was his wish for young learners from Folovhodwe to excel in education, so that the district municipality could hire homegrown accountants and engineers. He also donated photo copiers to the two schools.

He announced that poor pupils who passed their matric well would qualify for the mayoral bursary fund to further their education at various universities and colleges.

“We understand that some learners have to travel many kilometres to and from schools on foot, and plans are underway

to arrange with the district education department to provide transport for them,” added Matibe.

The school principal of Folovhodwe Primary School, Ms Alice Phaswana, said she was thankful for the donation of school uniforms and shoes, which would go a long way to help poor learners who never had any. “Our rural communities have parents without steady jobs and they cannot meet the school needs of their children. Now, poor learners will concentrate on their school lessons rather than think of their poor backgrounds,” said Ms Phaswana.

Mayor donates books during readathon The mayor of the Makhado Municipality, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi, officially launched a readathon campaign at the Elim community hall on Saturday.

Mutavhatsindi gave books to Masungulo Primary School and pupils from different schools to encourage them to read. He told the pupils that they should cultivate a culture of reading at a young age and that the Makhado Municipality supported them.

He told the pupils that he also hailed from a rural village

and that all leaders, including he himself, were products of primary education. “It all starts here,” he added.

He mentioned that the municipality had partnered with the Makhado public library to support the people in mastering their reading skills. “There are 15 small libraries in the Makhado municipal area and our aim is to have a small library in every ward,” he said.

Mutavhatsindi was praised by different speakers. The local chief, Njhakanjhaka Hasani

Mukhari, said his tribal authority appreciated the municipality’s efforts in promoting education.

Mr Rendani Munzhelele from the Department of Education said the intervention by the municipality would make a difference to rural children. A pupil of Masungulo Primary, Ntsako Baloyi, said that with the help of municipality, they were going to pass at the end of the year. He appealed to different companies to follow what hte municipality had done and to invest in the future of the youth.

Ntsanwisi brightens life of disabled Masiya A nasty incident in 2008 shattered a once bright pupil’s dream of becoming a journalist. The incident also left him with ugly scars and his face is now deformed.

The strong-willed Croof Masiya of Mphambo village in Malamulele never gave up on life and, through the support he is getting from the community, he is picking up the pieces and making a comeback in life.

He is a member of a poor, unemployed family of 11, which makes life very difficult for them.

He was born with a disabled in left hand and leg, but this week brought something to cheer him up. A Good Samaritan brought a considerable amount of groceries and R500 cash to the family.

Va Xivono, who is well-known for his charitable spirit, said he felt pity for the boy and the family after learning of his condition.

Ntsanwisi endeared himself to the community when he ran from Polokwane to Nkowankowa in 2009 as part of the 16 Days of Activism against abuse against women and children. He did the same in 2010, when he ran from Johannesburg to Nkowankowa.

In 2011, he continued with his charitable endeavour when he ran from Durban to Nkowankowa.

“We are very concerned about the future of our youth. We would love to see all our youths reaching their dreams, irrespective of where they come from.

We do not want to see them failing in life because of their backgrounds. We want to inspire

them to prosper in life,” he said.

Ntsanwisi has done a lot for the community and continues to make an impact in people’s lives.

Many are now able to access tertiary education and skills development because of his efforts.

“As for Masiya, we will assess his situation and maybe we could involve medical experts and even raise funds for plastic surgery for him,” he said. According to Masiya, he is an epileptic and disabled. “When I fell in boiling water in 2008, I thought my world had come to an end, but with the support I am getting from people like Ntsanwisi, my life is being resuscitated and I can go on with it. I just pray that God will bless him and his organisation will continue to assist others in my condition,” he said

Khubvi residents celebrate their land reform compensation Residents of Khubvi village outside Thohoyandou are celebrating, after they were given a cheque of more than R2,5m as compensation for their forceful removal from their land by the former government.

Nearly 50 households each received R54 650 from the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform, during a ceremony held at the

Khubvi Community Hall on Monday (September 10).

According to the chairperson of Khubvi Land Claim, Mr Humbulanin Ramalata, the community was forcefully removed from the area of Tshigwene, better known as Damani. Initially when the families were removed, the area was used for tea production, but later for banana farming.

“We are happy about the money. We have been waiting since 1998, when we lodged the claim for our land,” said Ramalata. Mr Brian Malindi from the Thulamela Municipality, who represented Executive Mayor Tshitereke Matibe, applauded the national government for compensating people who were displaced. “These people were removed without compensation. We appeal to the beneficiaries to use the money wisely,” said Malindi.

Mr Rirhandzu Shilote, a senior manager in the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform, said that Minister Gugile Nkwinti had given them a mandate “to prioritize pay-outs to the claimants, especially on state land. In the province we have finalised 80% of the claims, but the 20% left are the most difficult ones,” said Malindi. He added that the remaining claims are on highly commercialized agricultural land, which is very expensive to acquire. From 1994 to December 1998, Limpopo received more than 6 000 claims. Chief Thinawanga Randima said he was over the moon about the compensation. He hailed the committee for a job well done.

One of the recipients, Ms Masindi Ratshilumela, said she would renovate her house and also lay paving. “I am tired of using dung to decorate my home,” said the smiling granny. Ms Tshinakaho Tshikovhi said she would build a house with the money and trade her mud house for a modern one. Ms Elisa Mbulaheni said she would use the money to address the educational needs of her children, in order to secure their future.

Legal papers filed The Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) was served with legal papers in the North Gauteng High Court on 7 September as part of AfriForum’s first step in forcing the municipality to adhere to its constitutional obligations to provide residents of Makhado (Louis Trichardt) and surrounds with water.

The VDM now has until 12 September to provide the court with a response, should they oppose this action. Local AfriForum chairperson Mr Wally Schultz said that the respondents in the case are the VDM, the Makhado Municipality, Limpopo Premier Mr Cassel Mathale and the Minister of Water Affairs, Ms Edna Molewa.

AfriForum’s organiser in Limpopo, Mr Tiaan Esterhuizen, said that the municipality’s careless attitude indicated that they were not taking their constitutional responsibility towards residents seriously. The court papers were served on the respondents, despite an appeal from Makhado Mayor Cllr David Mutavhatsindi to Schultz to stop legal proceedings.

“The mayor approached me at the last minute to drop our urgent application, indicating that the Makhado Municipality was prepared to co-operate with us on improving service delivery. He indicated that the recent appointment of a new municipal manager would be followed by more appointments that will dramatically change the current situation,” Schultz said. Schultz added, however, that he had informed Mutavhatsindi that while they welcomed this new attitude, it should have been done months ago before things got out of hand.

“I was astonished that Mayor Mutavhatsindi was unaware that the VDM had not even bothered to reply to any of AfriForum’s demands that precipitated this court action,” said Schultz.

Since a local resident is required by the court to be an applicant in the action, along with AfriForum, Ms Anne-Marie Kuhne was the obvious choice to accompany Shultz to sign off the required legal documentation in Polokwane on 5 September.

Kuhne operates a cut-flower business from her home in the centre of town.

“Kuhne kept a meticulous record of the inconsistent water supply in town. Her statement was so comprehensive and even included a detailed calendar of daily water flows, making her the clear choice to be a joint applicant, as required by law, in our urgent court application” said Schultz.

Jafrou Maria laid to rest Jafrou (senior mother) Maria Mabuduga Ralinala, who passed away on 31 August, was buried at Musanda Milaboni last Saturday.

During the ceremony, she was hailed as a real community builde, who rendered her service to people from all walks of life.

During his sermon, Apostle (Dr) Masakona of the Calvary Church said all the people present were happy, because they were celebrating

the life of a people’s person. “She led a pure life and young people should idolize her,” Masakona added.

Jafrou Ralinala started to serve in the United African Apostolic Church as a messenger at the tender age of eight years and was the first female allowed to play the drums in church.

She was a founder member of the women’s league of her chuch.

She is survived by two sons and 16 grandchildren.

Khuba family’s house collapses The storms and rains which came on Wednesday night last week (5 September) left a family without a roof over their heads, when their one-roomed mud-brick house collapsed at Tshikwarani village in the Kutama area.

Mr Joseph Khuba (46) and his wife, Selina (39), were awakened by a loud sound, when the bricks and roofing of the house collapsed in the early hours of Thursday morning. According to Khuba, they woke up to investigate and found that their house was severely damaged.

“We have nowhere else to stay and we do not know what to do about the situation we are facing now,” he added. The Kutama Traditional Authority, however, has responded to the call for help.

The chairperson of the traditional authority, Mr Gilbert Muofhe, said that the family had been living in a house not suitable for human habitation.

He said that, by the look of things,

the house was on the verge of collapsing at any time. “We’ve found a place for the family and they will share an RDP house with another family,” said Muofhe. “It is the traditional authority’s duty to try to help where we can.”

Mr and Mrs Khuba are unemployed and they manage to scratch a living by performing small chores in households around the village. Their two children have since been removed from their care and were placed in a children’s care centre in Tshikota by the social workers. According to them, the family’s living arrangement were not suitable for children.

The family’s unassuming belongings were moved to the RDP house a few streets away, where a gentleman in the RDP house welcomed them warmly. “We will share the rooms,” he said, dividing the rooms by closing up one internal door with corrugated sheets, for the families to have at least two rooms each. “These people are my long-time friends,” he added.

According to the complainant, Mrs Tovhowani Sadiki, she came home from her place of work in Gauteng on Monday, 20 August, and found that the main door of her house had been broken down. She stepped inside and noticed that her stove, couches, music system, refrigerator and microwave oven were missing. Little did she know that this was only the beginning of a heart-breaking sight in the house. R22 million Makhuvha Sports Complex nears completion Thovhele Gole Mphaphuli said the nearly completed Makhuvha Sports Complex would be a big boost to the local communities.

Mphaphuli, who is a champion for development and very passionate about sports, met contractors and staff at the sports complex last week. Built at a cost of R22 million, the stadium, which was started in 2011, is envisaged to be completed

by December 2012. According to Makhadi, the stadium is nearly complete, with the fence, small pool, courts and ablution blocks already completed.

“Residents from the village and the other surrounding villages, mostly the youth, are going to benefit a lot. In the past, athletes going for camps used to sleep under trying conditions, but this will be a thing of the past as the different halls can be utilized as sleeping quarters,” Makhadi added.

“This is one of the best centres for sports development and some of the small premier soccer league games will be played here. This will benefit the locals economically,” he added.

More illegals deported through Beit Bridge Women told to speak out against abuse South Africa deported more than 1 200 Zimbabweans through Beit Bridge Border Post two weeks ago, bringing the total to more than 35 000 illegal immigrants brought home since the Department of Home Affairs resumed the exercise last October.

South Africa resumed the deportation of undocumented Zimbabweans in October last year. “We have so far handled 35 031 deportees since the exer-

cise resumed on 7 October last year. Between 1 January and 24 August, 27 276 Zimbabweans were brought back home,” said Zimbabwe’s assistant regional immigration manager at Beit Bridge Border Post, Mr Charles Gwede.

The latest batch of deportees was brought in aboard seven buses from the Lindela detention centre outside Johannesburg in Gauteng. Gwede said several border jumpers were taking ad-

vantage of the drop in water levels in the Limpopo River to cross the border illegally through undesignated entry points. “There is a need to intensify border patrols to reduce border jumping as, of late, there has been a sharp increase in border jumping,” he added.

“We continue to warn people against using undesignated entry points as they risk being attacked by robbers who operate in bushy areas along the river,” he also said.

Suspected fish poacher killed by crocs A 27-year-old suspected fish poacher from Mwenezi village outside Beit Bridge was attacked and killed by crocodiles last week, when he jumped into a dam while trying to evade arrest by security guards, police have said.

Police spokesperson Insp Peter Zhanero said that after the incident, police only recovered the bottom part of the body of Sim-

barashe Matondo. It happened on Thursday at about 20:00 at Chimusoro Dam on Ivane Range.

Matondo was in the company of Masinge Masinge (35).

Upon arrival at the dam, the two started fishing and were aboard a man-made canoe.

“While they were fishing, they were approached by two security guards who asked them to produce fishing permits, which they

did not have. Matondo jumped into the crocodile-infested dam and was immediately attacked by a crocodile,” Zhanero said.

The police attended the scene and retrieved the victim’s remains.

Zhanero warned community members against going into the water, saying they risked drowning or being attacked by crocodiles.

“Members of the community should not trust water which is not meant for recreational purposes. It is dangerous to swim in crocodile-infested dams,” he added.

Women under the umbrella of the Democratic Alliance Women's Network in Thulamela were told not to keep quiet, in order to cut the spiralling wave of abuse perpetrated against women and children.

This was during the party's Women's Month celebrations, held at the Nazarene School in Thohoyandou on Saturday.

The organiser, Ms Thelma Marole, who also is the chairperson of the Women’s Network in Thulamela, said the event was aimed at wrapping up the activities they had celebrated throughout August. "Women in

this part of the country, where poverty and unemployment are rife, should meet and share ideas as to how we can empower ourselves. We also roped in people who are successful in their own right to motivate and others to enlighten them about the other issues of life,” she added.

Successful businesswoman Ms Esther Mushaathama described her own experiences to show women that they could achieve their dreams, despite the odds in life. Mushaathama, who owns Mvelaphanda Projects in Tshisahulu, offered to train women and develop their skills free of charge.

A member of the legislature for the DA in Limpopo, Ms Meisie Kennedy, said so much abuse was perpetrated against women and women were partly to blame for the scourge. "Women fear reporting abuse. Many of our women are not working and they fear that if they report their husbands, they will starve and their children will no longer go to school.”

She said that this phenomenon must stop and women should speak out and report all forms of abuse. “Government has made available services that are free where they can seek help," she said.

"I believe that the organisers will try to find a good strategy of inviting more youths next year, as the whole project proves to be a very good idea in creating a platform of reading, studying and educational interaction."

Three league points for United Brothers Dzwerani United Brothers came back from a half-time 0-1 deficit to beat the visitors, Tswinga Peace Makers, 2-1 in their Thulamela LFA League match at the Dzwerani grounds on Saturday.

United Brothers were disorganized in the first half. As if they were hypnotized, United Brothers could hardly make three moves.

Peace Makers, however, fumbled at the goal finish on a continuous basis.

Their centre forward, Ndumeliso Matodzi, was the first to cause an upset. Matodzi could not believe his eyes when his half-volley hit the woodwork and bounced back into play. His teammate, Tshifhiwa Mboloma, also disappointed the fans when he shot wide from close range, after a square pass from Adivhaho Mudau in the 19th minute.

Peace Makers’ solitary goal came in the 28th minute. Their captain, Takalani Mushidzhi, won a loose ball after a clearing error and beat the keeper with a ground cutter.

Tsireledzo Matumba of Peace Makers was warned with a card for a continued argument with the referee late in the first half. The home side approached the last half with more fighting spirit. Their midfielders took it upon themselves to distribute telling passes to the strikers. They found the equaliser in the 59th minute. Victor Radzuma finished off a rebound after Khodani Khangale’s attempt.

Peace Makers lost cohesion after Brothers’ opening goal. That gave Brothers a good chance to score the winning goal in the 74th minute. Khodani Khangale forced his way through the defence of Peace Makers and unleashed a rocket from inside the box.

Masala Mukondeleli of Brothers squandered a scoring opportunity in the dying minutes.

Madombidzha Arsenal destroy Stone Breakers Madombidzha Arsenal were by far too hot for Tshikhwani Stone Breakers when they beat them 4-1 in their rehearsal match at Madombidzha on Sunday.

Arsenal showed a spirit of commitment from the onset and took the game to their opponents from the first whistle. Their efforts paid off in the 30th minute, when Funi Munyai finished a square pass from Dakalo Nwanamidwa. The keeper of Breakers, Christian Mudzwari, watched helplessly as the ball landed at the back of his net.

Although they were in control of the game, the home team were the first to effect a change to their original line-up. They replaced Dakalo Nwanamidwa with Khuthadzo Ramavhale.

Arsenal increased the margin in the 34th minute when Ritshidze Mutangwa scored after a neat pass from Gudo Machaba. The visiting team had themselves to be blame for failing to produce a goal in the 44th minute. Their striking force, manned by Innocent Muhlanga and Vusi Nematandani, was out of touch for the better part of the match.

Breakers lost cohesion as the game progressed. Arsenal capitalised and scored their third goal in the 49th minute.

Elderly ladies team on tour to Qwaqwa The Bethesda Elderly Ladies Team in Mbhokota in the Elim area visited Qwaqwa in the Free State last Thursday. They were to play friendly games against other teams from around the country, but unfortunately rain put a damper on things and no matches could take place.

The team's coach, Mr Samuel Tshabalala, said afterwards that they will go to Qwaqwa again in December this year to play the friendly matches that they should have played last weekend. The project is sponsored by the National Development Chamber of Commerce.

The Chamber's president, Mr Pitso Tsotetsi, stated that he would arrange for the team to resume their friendly clashes in Qwaqwa in December this year. "I'll be visiting the Bethesda soccer players in their village to confirm the journey in person again," said Mr Tsotetsi.

Limpopo Mirror visited the ladies during their practise and well-wishing party on Monday morning last week (3 September) at Mbhokota village.

The ladies showed vigour and enthusiasm as they kicked the ball across the soccer field. The team's captain, Manana Gladys Makondo, expressed the team's joy with the latest announcement. "What else can we say? We're definitely putting our village, ward and municipality on the map," said Makondo.

"You can't believe that we practise and play on this uneven soccer field."

It was obvious that the elderly ladies in Mbhokota loved soccer, when even the ones who walked with the aid of sticks and crutches came out to support those going to the Free State. Cllr Ruth Makhubele (Ward 13) wished the team all the best and added that she hoped they would come back home with a trophy.

New job for Japhta

The captain of the Bethesda Elderly Ladies Team, Gladys Makondo, kicks the ball.

The former Black Leopards striker, Japhta Mabosho, is the new assistant coach of one of the Vhembe-based second division side, Basel FC. According to the spokesperson of the club, Mr Vhutshilo Makhado, Mabosho’s appointment came into effect last Monday. Mabosho joined Basel as a player early last season. He was the team’s top goal scorer, despite the fact that he did not feature in a number of matches as a result of injury.

Makhado revealed that the decision to appoint Mabosho as the team’s assistant coach was reached after it was realised that the team could use his experience. Makhado further stated that Mabosho was assessed during their off-season matches, where he was assisting the team’s head coach, Mr Justice Mtileni.

Mabosho joined Black Leopards from Tshivhazwaulu Peace Makers 10 years ago.

His relationship with Lidoda Duvha lasted for two seasons.

He played for several national first division league teams, including Hanover Park, FC Cape Town and Vasco Da Gama, before resurfacing in the Vodacom League last season.

When asked how they were planning to fill the void left by Mabosho, Makhado said that they were busy assessing a number of experienced strikers.

Sex during church In a bizarre case, a 38-year-old mother and her son from Gutu village outside Beit Bridge have left the local community in a state of shock, after they were caught being intimate during a night prayer vigil.

The woman and her 18-year-old son appeared in court last Monday, facing charges of incest.

They appeared before a local magistrate, Mr Nyasha Vhitori, and the case was postponed to 18 September for trial. The two were released from custody.

The prosecutor, Mrs Agatha Gabriel, told the court that on an unknown date, sometime in July this year, the woman allegedly coerced her son into having sex with her and he consented. The court further heard that the two’s illicit sexual encounters, which are believed to have started in April this year, came to light sometime last month.

It is said the two would normally commit their sordid act during night prayer vigils. On the day of the alleged incident, the two were caught by two minors, who were attending a church service at a local business centre. The court was told that after the youngsters had caught them red-handed, they reported it to the elders who were at the church service. The elders went to the scene and the two were found “in the act.”

The church elders reported the issue to the local village head, who summoned them to his homestead and later reported it to the police.

More points for Leopards?

Kaizer Chiefs will have to sweat if they want to collect the maximum league points against Black Leopards when they meet in their Absa Premiership League match at the Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg tomorrow evening (Saturday).

This is according to the Leopards’ captain, Magezi Bobe.

Bobe, who has just returned from suspension, said that they would have nobody to blame but themselves if they dropped any points against the Amakhosi. He revealed that all his

teammates were available for selection, except their DRC international, Jean Munganga, who is still under suspension. Munganga saw red in their opening league match against Bloemfonein Celtic at the Peter Mokaba Stadium last month.

In his response, Chiefs’ demon midfielder, Josta Dladla, stated that they had unfinished business with Black Leopards. He cited their 0-1 defeat at the hands of Lidoda Duvha in their Absa Premiership League match at the same venue last season as something that was still fresh in

their memories.
