Struggle veteran Alson Tshitahe is no more

Tshitahe (69) died in the NHC Dental and Medical Centre in Thohoyandou on the morning of 7 July, following a long illness.

According to a family member, Mr Ronny Tshitahe, the late veteran had been a political prisoner at Robben Island for10 years for his

involvement in the 1976 Soweto uprising. He himself had been a student at Mphaphuli High School at the time, which was also burned down during the uprising.

“The class boycotts at Mphaphuli High School (now Raluswielo Secondary) started on 20 June 1976, after the riots in the Soweto townships on 16 June that year.

found by passers-by in the early morning hours of Sunday, 10 July. Some kind of struggle had apparently taken place before she was stabbed repeatedly in the chest and over her body.

Limpopo police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo confirmed the incident, saying that a case of rape and murder had been opened with the police. “Members at our detective unit are busy conducting an investigation, and hopefully we will soon make a breakthrough,” Mojapelo said.

The incident adds to the ever-increasing statistics of murders in the village. The ward councillor, Mr Masia Mulaudzi, said that, years ago, the area had been notorious for killings and other criminal activities but that, through their partnership with the police, the area had become safer again. “We are very concerned about the recent killings in our area again. We have already lost a number of lives through crime in a very short space of time,” he said.

Mulaudzi said that, after consultations with other structures and the local traditional leader, they had agreed to hold a meeting and plan ways forward to combat the scourge of crime in their area.

The chairperson of the Real Men Foundation, Mr Calvin Nenguza, said that whoever had killed the woman was not a real man. “Real men do not kill. They do not rape their women, but give comfort and security to them. Let us all shout out in one voice against the abuse of woman, children and killing,” he said.

Thulamela battles with expensive staff and little of its own revenue

By Anton van Zyl The Thulamela Municipality approved a record operating budget of nearly R1 billion three weeks ago, but a closer look at the figures shows that the picture is not that pretty. The salary burden still weighs in at more than 40%, while almost 70% of the operating income will be from transfers and subsidies.

During her budget presentation on 24 June, Mayor Sarah Rammbuda said that the total municipal revenue was estimated at R959.4 million, up from the previous year’s R880.5 million. The bulk of the money to pay for operating expenses (R586,18 million) will come from transfers and subsidies from provincial and national departments. Less than 17% of the council’s income will come from property rates and service charges. What is even more concerning is that the municipality expects to write off R104,9 million as bad debt.

The mayor highlighted several of the capital projects for which work will commence or start in the next year. R30 million was allocated to re-gravelling of rural roads. In the Thoho­yandou CBD, one of the main feeding roads will be upgraded at an expected cost of R17 million.

Members of the operation included six boat owners from the Levubu and Albasini area, eight officers from the Department of Environmental Affairs (Sibasa) and two police officers from the Waterval/Elim police. Municipalities’ Speakers get together to discuss priorities Municipal News Cllr Siyaphi Shirilele, Speaker of the Musina Municipal Council, said that Speakers had a major role to play in ensuring that local government executed its role in addressing legislative oversights and delivered prompt services to the people.

Shirilele addressed fellow council Speakers and their support staff during the Vhembe District Speaker’s Forum that was held at the Musina Municipal Council Chambers on Thursday, 7 July. The Speaker’s Forum is a platform where council Speakers from various municipalities meet and share ideas on how municipal councils should be run with uniformity and as per prescribed legislation.

“This meeting clearly demonstrates that the district development model is practically taking its course as we will now be able to plan under one roof, despite the fact that we all come from different entities. It becomes easier for us to work when we have platforms like this one where we can meet and share our challenges and successes. This platform makes sure that there is cooperation in all municipalities and council meetings are run in a professional and uniform manner,” Shirilele said.

Avhatakali could really do with a motorized chair

By Bernard Chiguvare Life is not always easy for 30-year-old Avhatakali Nekokwane from Maungani village in Thohoyandou. For her, moving around is limited, which means that she has to stay around the house for most of the day.

Avhatakali was born physically disabled, so she has been wheelchair-bound all her life. Although she cannot use her legs, she still has full use of her arms and hands, and nothing is wrong with this girl’s mind. These days, she longs to get out and do things for herself.

Avhatakali lives with her mother and sister.

She wants to get herself a good job or further her studies, but for her to become more independent, she will need a motorised wheelchair to replace the current one her family has to push her around in. “I cannot continue to bother my mother and sister to push me around every time I need to go out. The wheelchair I am using now is not adequate at my age anymore. Sometimes I just want to go to the nearby shops, but I have to be pushed because the gravel roads make it difficult for me to push myself.”

She is appealing to anyone out there who might be able to help her with a motorised wheelchair. She believes that it will truly make her life much easier, and she will be able to stop worrying about her mother and sister pushing her around all day.

The home affairs stakeholders forum’s main duty is to assist local government in facilitating public-education campaigns, promote population register awareness and resolving problems related to citizens’ documentation.

The lovely Ndaedzo Matodzi was crowned Miss Face of Courageous 2022. She was flanked

by Mutshidzi Mulaudzi (1st Princess) and Khaarendiwe Masuvhelele (2nd Princess).

The title of Miss Teen Face of Courageous 2022 went to Vutomi Chavani, with

Mpho Matshaya as her 1st Princess and Yolanda Tshimbudzi as 2nd Princess.

Naledi Moeti was crowned as Junior Miss Face of Courageous 2022 Queen, with Takalani Netshiavha as her 1st Princess.

Miss Tiny Face of Courageous 2022 was won by the adorable Refiloe Mulaudzi, while Vhulenda Mphaphuli was crowned 1st Princess and Vhulisa Ndou 2nd Princess.

Young Blessing Ramabulana was the runner up.

Lastly, Vhulenda Mphaphuli was crowned Miss Charity Face of Courageous 2022.

What this means is that he will need all the votes he can get if he is to make it first to the Top 20, before he can try to win this highly coveted title.

The 27-year-old contestant is originally from Cape Town, but currently lives in Louis Trichardt. He joined the modelling industry in 2017 to boost his self-esteem and confidence.

“I used to be a fashion model, so this is my first time entering a competition. It was really just to become a better version of myself. I’m nervous, but at the same time also confident that I can go all the way to win this competition. I’m very thankful for

Jambo to release another album 1975 with a self-made banzho (traditional guitar made of Zimbabwean-born but Thowood), which he played for hoyandou-based recording almost seven years before he artist Mitchell Jambo antouched an electric guitar. When asked why he was only releasing his album in October when he had already recorded it, he said he always released his albums in October because that is his birth month. “It is always a way of celebrating my birthday,” he said.

Even though he will celebrate his 52nd birthday in October, Jambo’s face still looks fresh and shining. When asked about the secret of his “being-forever-young” look, he said the secret was cold water.

“If you want to look young all the time, bath with cold water. Since I was young, I have always used cold water,” he said.

Thirteen-year-old Miss Thohoyandou finalist Wamashudu Manwadu has started a campaign called Pad a Girl to help provide teenage girls and young women in her community with sanitary towels and cosmetics. The campaign is already bearing fruit as many girls from disadvantaged backgrounds have benefitted. Her goal is to collect 5 000 sanitary pads before the end of July, and she is getting there fast.

Pensioner wants to record music

By Victor Mukwevho An 82-year-old pensioner who has been playing a traditional instrument called mbila (also called a thumb piano) for more than 50 years, Mr Tshinyadzo Joseph Muthakhi, says he has been trying to record his debut album for many years but to no avail.

Mr Muthakhi, who is also a traditional healer from Khubvi village, says he started playing mbila when he was still very young.

"As a former bare-knuckle boxing champion, I used to play my music each time I went to tournaments. I also play my music to connect myself with my ancestors," he said.

When asked how he was going to perform on stage when he was now in his 80s, he said, "Age is just a number. I still feel very strong. Each time I listen to Thomas Mapfumo playing mbila, I feel very much inspired. I know that, despite my age, one day I will make history by being the oldest musician to record an album in my village," he said.

“Beauty with Scars is a non-fiction novel, categorised into six chapters that address various issues, such as women empowerment, gender-based violence, upbringing of young women and the challenges they face, and how women should find their strength within themselves. It also reprimands the act of faking abuse and challenges, and encourages independence in women.”

The face behind Vho Mutsinda’s voice Phalaphala FM’s dramatic soapie, Ndi yone mini Yineyi, has captivated its listeners over the years. The radio station will now be introducing fans to the actors and writers behind their favourite soapie.

The first one on the list is Ms Florah Sadiki, who plays the part of Vho-Mutsinda in Ndi yone mini Yineyi. She also interprets the role of Vho-Lufhunga in I Khoukhidzhana, and has a part in SABC TV’s soapie, Muvhango, to name but a few. Since she started her acting career in radio drama, she has played in more than 20 productions.

Sadiki, born and bred in Tshiozwi in Ha-Sinthumule, is the second-born child of the late Mukumela and Joe Sadiki. She started her education first at Mukhudwana Lower and Tshiozwi Primary, and completed her Grade 11 at Litshovhu Secondary School.

She furthered her education at the Agriven Training Centre in Lwamondo, where she studied culinary and hospitality science. In 1995, she learned to be a stock controller and store manager at Chamdor Training College, and in 2000, she studied financial management at the Business Management College.

While Sadiki worked at the Agriven Training Centre, she went on to study for her personal assistant diploma at Damelin College, and later worked at the Giyani Training Centre as chief executive secretary.

“I always loved radio, especially listening to radio dramas. This was where my love of radio acting started,” she said.

Sadiki’s advice to aspiring young radio or TV actors is to study hard first before venturing fully into the acting industry.

A remembrance ceremony was held for the late education pioneer Asnath Limuwani Ngoma at her home in Khakhanwa village, outside Malamulele, on Saturday, 2 July.

Ngoma, a retired teacher, passed away at the age of 75 in June last year, but because of the strict Covid-19 restrictions on large gatherings, family and friends could not cerebrate her life properly.

Ngoma was born at Mavambe village in 1946 and started her schooling at

She studied teaching at the Vendaland Training Institute and first started teaching at Sundani Primary School in 1968. After that, she joined Khakhanwa Primary School.

She was also an active member of the ANC and became a ward councillor during the transitional local councils before the establishment of municipalities. After the establishment of municipalities, she became a PR councillor, representing the ANC in the Thulamela Local Municipality.

Ngoma was also an adviser for Khosi Vho-Jeffrey Ramovha and his royal council for many years and contributed to the establishment and building of the local Uniting Reformed Church. Besides that, she had been in the forefront of the formation of the Talifhani Burial Society. As a cultural expert, Ngoma also taught the local children traditional dances and excelled at teaching lower-grade children.

Family member Takalani Ralufhe said celebrating Ngoma’s life was important because she had brought so much light to the people of Khakhanwa and the surrounding villages. “The village of Khakhanwa was almost unknown, but because of her hard work and community-development skills, local people

can now stand tall and celebrate the wonderful work she did in her lifetime.

Being one of the first teachers in the village, she had produced many professionals who are today occupying top positions across the country.”

Ralufhe said that, besides being a good parent for her own children, Ngoma had served in nearly every community structure without expecting anything in return. “Even after she retired as a teacher, she continued to work for this community until her last day on earth. Her passing was a great loss to the family and the local community as a whole because she was a great leader who could not be replaced. Her love for the people and her giving spirit will continue to guide us as we celebrate her life.

Her home was like a shelter as she cared for many poor children, seeing them to school until they became independent.

New Leopards branch in Nzhelele

We got relegated because we didn’t have fans in the stadium,” said Tshifhe David Thidiela during the launch of a new Black Leopards Football Club in Nzhelele on Saturday.

Thidiela, the owner of the team, said that he was hopeful that, with the support of the fans, the club would achieve its goal of being promoted to the top league again. He was speaking during a ceremony held at Lavero Lifestyle Lodge in Nzhelele during which the new supporters’ club was launched.

Thidiela said another thing that had contributed to the relegation of his team was the loss of his wife, who had been

his pillar of strength.

Black Leopards coach Joel Masutha promised the fans of the new branch that the team would perform well this coming season. He said that the competition would be tough, because the Vhembe District had three teams competing in the Motsepe Foundation Championship (formerly known as the GladAfrica Championship).

The Motsepe Foundation Championship will commence on the weekend of 2 September. The three Vhembe teams are Venda Football Academy, Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila and Black Leopards.

The chairperson of the new branch, Livhuwani Nembambula Chillies of Nembambula Construction, said they had been trying to launch the

branch since 2020, but the plans had been marred by the national Covid-19 lockdown.

“Finally, our dream came true and the Nzhelele branch is officially launched,” he said.

Nembambula said the aim of clubs such as those was to motivate members to participate in sport, because through sport one could make new friends.

The executive committee of the Nzhelele branch consists of Livhuwani Nembambula (chairperson), Tshifhango Lutendo Bridgette (deputy chairperson), Matsedu Tshifhiwa (secretary), Tshikalaha Olga (deputy secretary), Malise Thinavhuyo (treasurer). Madzhie Emmanuel and Nefefe (Life) Vhutshilo are the coordinators and Nefefe Ambi, Khakhu (Madish) Avhasei and Patrick (Vieira) Phungo are the additional members.

Mutele lift the Bilisi Festival trophy

By Frank Mavhungu Mutele FC are still in celebratory mood after being crowned the champions of the 10th edition of the MS Quality Bilisi Sports Festival at the Tshenzhelani Grounds in the Niani area last Sunday.

Mutele beat Tshilamusi Super Eagles 6-5 in the final to lift the floating trophy. The winner was determined through penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw at the end of regulation time. Mutele FC were presented with R2 500, a floating trophy, a soccer kit and gold medals during a ceremony held at the grounds shortly after the final.

Mutele’s way to the final went via Masisi FC, whom they beat 1-0 in their opening match at the same venue the previous day. They brutally walloped Sigonde FC 4-1 in their semi-final game, which was played on Sunday morning.

The runners-up, Tshilamusi Super Eagles, went home with R1 500, silver medals and a soccer kit. Super Eagles had beaten Sigonde FC 5-4 in their opening match and secured a place

in the final after beating Tshenzhelani FC 1-0 in the semi-final stage.

The teams booted out of the tournament in the semi-final round, Tshenzhelani FC and Sigonde FC, were presented with R1 000 each.

Six teams from the Niani area took part in the tournament. The teams which had tried their luck in this year’s edition are: Tshilamusi Super Eagles, Masisi FC, Sigonde FC, Tshenzhelani FC, Maramanzhi Sweepers and the champions, Mutele FC. The top goal scorer of the tournament, Mukhethwa Munyai from Mutele FC, was presented with a trophy during the ceremony. He scored five goals in the tournament.

As usual, the tournament was preceded by a 10km fun run. Mr Livhalani Mudau was the winner in the fun run. He received a trophy during the ceremony. All the participants in the fun run were presented with medals.

The former Orlando Pirates striker, Jerry Sikhosana, and the deputy president of Safa Vhembe, Mr Colbert Nempumbuluni, were some of the guests who graced the occasion.

Makhuvha Young Brothers FC have good reason to celebrate. They were crowned the champions of the Masawe U/15 Soccer Tournament at the Makhuvha SK New Look Grounds on Monday. This after they had brutally walloped Golden Boys FC 4-0 in the final.

Young Brothers were presented with R5 000, a soccer kit, a floating trophy, gold medals, one soccer ball and 15 pairs of soccer boots during a ceremony held at the grounds shortly after the final game. The runners-up, Golden Boys

FC, went home with R3 000, a soccer kit, silver medals, a soccer ball and 15 pairs of soccer boots.

The third-placed side, Mafagini FC, received R1 500, bronze medals, a soccer kit and a soccer ball during the ceremony. Mafagini were too strong for Domboni FC, whom they crushed 6-0 in their losers’ final match that was played at the same venue earlier that day.

The top goal scorer in the tournament was Rolivhuwa Tshanda, from Mafagini FC. The Player of the Tournament award was presented to Hudivha Dzawela from Makhuvha Young Brothers. The best goalkeeper was Dakalo Makhado from Makhuvha Young Brothers.

Igwe out of Zwavhudi Cup

By Kaizer Nengovhela Igwe FC will no longer participate in the Zwavhudi Animal Feeds Winter Youth Tournament after losing 5-4 against Mukula Fast XI on Sunday at Rabali Stadium.

The winner had to be determined by a penalty shoot-out, following a 1-all draw in regulation time.

Fast XI spent the first 20 minutes playing defensive football and relying mostly on counter-attacks. After realising that they had nothing to fear, Igwe took the game to their opponents. Their demon midfielder, Obay Muleya, continued to distribute dangerous passes to the front runners.

A scramble just outside the penalty box in the 19th minute gave rise to the Igwe’s goal. Idavhaho Mbewe caught the Fast XI keeper, Rudzani Avheani, napping. He unleashed a volley from the edge of the box and Avheani watched helplessly as the ball hit the crossbar before landing inside the net.

By Frank Mavhungu Madandila Happy Boys are through to the last-16 round of the Zwavhudi Animal Feeds Winter Youth Tournament. They beat Khubvi Dangerous Darkies 3-1 in their opening match, played at the Tshifudi Stadium on Saturday.

Saturday’s game was evenly contested throughout the first half, with the teams creating and wasting scoring opportunities. Dangerous Darkies were the first to knock on the opponents’ door.

Their overlapping left back, Lawrence Chauke, forced his way through the defence of Happy Boys and tried his luck with a half volley from the 20-metre area. The ball hit the woodwork and landed outside the field of play for a goal kick.

Happy Boys regrouped from behind soon afterwards. They managed to create numerous scoring chances, but they found breaking the rock-solid wall of Darkies difficult. Happy Boys finally broke the stalemate in the 28th minute.

Matanda Rockers come from behind to win

By Frank Mavhungu Matanda Rockers came back from a 0-2 deficit to beat Tshimuthe FC 5-3 in their opening match of the Zwavhudi Animal Feeds Winter Youth Tournament which was played at the Rabali Stadium on Sunday.

Rockers did not lose hope despite conceding the first two goals within the first 15 minutes of the game.

Tshimuthe took six minutes to open their account. Their centre forward, Funanani Nethononda, finished off a loose ball after the keeper of Rockers, Maanda Netshiunda, mishandled the

ball.

They were severely punished for that.

Tshimuthe’s second goal came in the 14th minute. Funanani Nethononda completed his brace after some good build-ups from the centre of the pitch.

Tshimuthe’s second goal seemed to be a wakeup call to Rockers. They started to play like a team soon thereafter. They scored two goals via Mpho Mavhandu within a short space of time. Mavhandu’s opening goal came from a free kick in the 24th minute.

Mavhandu was on target again five minutes thereafter. He headed home, following a corner kick that was taken by Nditsheni Havhi.

Another home match for Local runner to participate Tshandama Young Stars at USA championships Another busy weekend lies ahead for the teams affiliated to the Limpopo Stream of the Sasol Women’s League.

After playing to a goalless draw against the University of Limpopo Ladies FC at the Tshandama Grounds last Saturday, Tshandama Young Stars will play another league match at the same venue this weekend.

They will fight for league points against Rodadau FC in the only match that will be played on Sunday afternoon.

While a win for Rodadau will enhance the team’s chances to lift the league trophy at the end of the season, Young Stars have a different reason to collect the three points at stake - they are currently fighting for survival. They are perched in the second-last position on the log standings with five points they had accumulated from nine matches. Young Stars are still to win a league match to date. The same applies to Merwe United Ladies, who are languishing at the bottom of the log with two points from the same number of matches. Young Stars must keep an eye on Rodadau’s goal poachers, Shonisani Mafela and the team’s captain, Sbongile Sebetha, if they are serious about winning the match. On the other hand, Rodadau will have a mammoth task to stop the Stars’ playmakers in Oriswikela Mudavhi and Mashudu Davhana.

The University of Limpopo Ladies will host Sisters FC at the Turfloop Stadium in Polokwane. The technical staff of Sisters are still battling to find a winning combination. They played to a 2-2 draw with Two for Joy Ladies FC at the Nwamitwa Grounds outside Tzaneen last Saturday.

Nekhubvi will be competing in the 4 x 400m women and mixed relays on 15 July. On 17 July, she will be competing in the 200m event, and if she qualifies, she will participate in the semi-finals on 20 July. Nekhubvi’s athletics career started at Tswera Primary and David Mutshinyalo Secondary, where she was discovered by Richard Makhumisane during the Vhembe athletics meet at Louis Trichardt High School in 2016. In 2020, she moved from her dusty home village to Pretoria to start her professional athletics career in the 100m, 200m and 400m events.
