Two Somalis get 25 years

Two prominent Vhembe-based Somali businessmen, who had mercilessly hacked a fellow countryman to death, were both sentenced to 25 years in prison on Tuesday.

They maintained their innocence throughout the trial. They were sentenced by Acting Judge Kganyago in the Limpopo High Court in Thohoyandou.

The two, Agolle Abdi Jimaale (34) of Siloam and Mohammad Muqtaar (29) of Tshikota village in the Dzanani area, were initially charged with Alasow Mohamed Saeed (21) of Sendedza, also in Dzanani, on two counts of murder and attempted murder.

The first count relates to the murder of Mohamed Abdullahi Adow, who was chopped, stabbed and killed with knives and pangas on 17 January this year at the Siloam Store.

The attempted murder charge relates to an attempt to kill Jabril Abrahim, who was also attacked before the assailants left.

During the trial, Adv Philemon Sengani, who appaeared for the defence, asked for the acquittal of all the accused on all counts.

Saeed was acquitted and the attempted murder charges were dropped against the other two accused.

In mitigation, the defence submitted to the court that, according to Somali tradition, the two parties had afterwards come together as families and resolved the issue. He also put it

to the court that the father of the deceased had approached the State with a view of not pursuing the matter.

He further submitted that the two have businesses that will not function if they are to be incarcerated. He pointed out that they have children wives and children, who will find it difficult to cope without them. He pleaded with the court to deviate from the minimum sentence and to impose a 10-year sentence on the accused.

All these arguments were countered by Adv Ratshilumela Makhera, who represented the State.

In sentencing the two, Acting Judge Kganyago said the two were accused of a heinous crime. He said he had taken into account the way the deceased had been killed like an animal.

He had also taken into account that they were both under the age of 35.

Kganyago said the murder had been premeditated, with all acting with a common purpose.

He also praised the State for having put its case beyond any reasonable doubt.

He sentenced both to 25-year prison terms, with an order that they not be considered for parole before they had served 20 years of their sentences. He also declared them unfit to possess firearms while in South Africa.

The brother of the deceased, Ishmael Calasow, who was in court, shed a tear of happiness after the sentencing. “At long last, justice has prevailed; my brother was slaughtered like an animal. I think the sentence will deter others from committing such crimes,” he said.

The investigating officer, W/O Samuel Muleele, was equally excited about the outcome of the case.

Madombidzha child killed in hit-and-run The parents of a four-year-old boy who was killed in a hit-and-run incident on the Sinthumule/Kutama road are grappling to come to terms with the death of their child. The Tshilwavhusiku police are also still searching for the driver of the car.

Tshivhula Tshivhula was hit by a car while walking home on his way from a local crèche across the main road. The incident occurred on 30 May at around 16:00 at Madodonga Village. He was in the company of his older sibling, a 12-year-old girl, who normally fetches him after school each day. Davhana, the driver of the Audi sedan hit the boy and drove off immediately. The driver was never identified, but a taxi driver who was driving behind the sedan was able to identify the colour and model of the car. The taxi driver couldn't identify the registration number of the Audi. “All I need is for the driver who drove away to hand him- or herself to the police,” said Ms Davhana, the deceased's mother. “Why kill somebody and drive away, if you believe it to have been a mistake?”

Meanwhile, the Tshivhula family told Vhamusanda Vho-Ntanganedzeni Kutama about their financial difficulties when it came to laying the deceased child to rest. Vho-Kutama then approached MTG Funerals in Louis Trichardt for burial assistance, who agreed to provide a coffin, tombstone and all burial services. The Tshivhula family are living in an RDP house.

The mayor of the Makhado Municipality, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi, also visited the Tshivhula family to assess the needs of the family. The family

seemed to be indigent and in need of help. According to the boy's father, Mr Mbulaheni Tshivhula, Cllr Mutavhatsindi promised to provide a tank of water and food parcels. The municipality will also clear the wild grass growing within and around the Tshivhula yard.

Tshivhula was laid to rest on Saturday (9 June) at Madodonga village.

Manhunt for three Vuwani suspects The community of Giyani and the surrounding areas heaved a huge sigh of relief when a new Nedbank Personal Loans branch recently opened in town. The branch is located at the Masingita Plaza. Mr Sarel Rudd, marketing executive of Nedbank Personal Loans, said the new branch was part of their company´s ongoing strategy to make banking more accessible to all in the country.

Authorities are still looking for three of the five suspects who escaped from the Vuwani police holding cells a fortnight ago.

According to information provided by the police, the group climbed through a hole that they had cut in the roof of the outer cell. Policemen on duty realised that the five suspects, Vhutshilo Rambau (22), Thanyani Nevondo (28), Moses Siganya Tshishonga (38), Mushe Nemudzivhadi (23) and Ashley Makumbe (28), were

missing at around 18:30.

Rambau, Nevondo and Tshishonga were detained on charges of housebreaking, Makumbe on a charge of common robbery and Nemudzivhadi on charges of housebreaking, rape and armed robbery.

Police confirmed on Tuesday that two of the five, Rambau and Makumbe, were re-arrested in an abandoned house at Ga-Manabela last Wednesday afternoon.

They thanked the community members for their help and in-

formation that led to the arrest.

They pleaded with the public to come forward with any more information on the whereabouts of the remaining three suspects.

Police have warned the public not to confront the suspects, as they might be armed and dangerous.

Police to investigate death of woman

The netball team of Masindi Primary School from Ha-Maila. With the team are their coaches Mrs Grace Mathivha, Ms Rangani Adelaide and Ms Sayo Sigadawani. The team became the provincial champions in the U/12B netball league after winning their final matches played in Polokwane on 2 June.They were also the provincial champions in 2011.The team's coaches thanked the parents who supported the whole team and raised funds, so that they could participate in the competitions.

The police in Malamulele are investigating cases of murder and attempted murder after a 27-year-old woman was killed and her 32-year-old brother critically injured in a shooting incident, involving the boyfriend of the woman.

According to a statement by Lt Col Ronel Otto of the communications media centre in Polokwane, it is alleged that Mr Erotic Thomas Mathye (30), went to the house of his girfriend,

Ethel Shirinda, at Mashobye village at approximately 14:20 on Monday afternoon. They were apparently involved in an argument, whereafter he produced a 9mm fire-arm and shot her in the head. He further allegedly shot and injured her brother, Tinyiko Innocent Shirinda (32), three times. Shirinda was transported to hospital in a critical condition. It is alleged that the suspect fled to the house of relatives at Magona village following

the incident, but realising that he was wanted by the police, a member of his family contacted the Malamulele Police Station.

The police arrived at the house at approximately 23:00 on Monday.

Upon realising that he was about to be arrested, the man allegedly shot himself in the head and died at the scene.

An inquest docket was also opened, following this incident.

Name saga: Courts to decide again The fight to decide what the town’s name will be in the foreseeable future is once again heading for the court rooms.

Following the second name change of the town Louis Trichardt to Makhado, the Chairpersons Association (CA) received a unanimous vote from its members to take the decision of the Minister of Arts and Culture on review to court.

At the CA meeting on June 6 in the church hall of the Soutpansberg Dutch Reformed Church, members of the large contingent of the Hlanganani Concerned Group were very vocal in their rejection of the procedures that were followed prior to the name change. Mr Donald Mlati said that, at the time, they had persuaded the Shangaans not to set alight the bus that the Makhado Municipality had used to transport people from outside to Waterval to “vote for the name change.”

Mr Robert Khoza, Hlanganani chairperson, said in an interview after the meeting that the name change had been forced down their throats.

Arts and Culture Minister Paul Mashatile was satisfied that “according to documents submitted all consultative processes were followed and all points of view that emerged during consultation and Council meetings were also reflected and submitted…” as

stated by his letter of dismissal of objections dated 10 May 2012.

Both the name change and the Minister’s dismissal of the CA’s objections will be taken to court on review. Minister Mashatile gazetted the name change on 14 October last year. The CA will first take the matters on review to the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria and, if necessary, to the Appeal Court or even the Constitutional Court.

The purpose of the CA and its appointed attorneys and advocate, Adv Denny du Preez, is to have the name change set aside.

In the first round of the name change from Louis Trichardt to Makhado, the struggle started in 2003 and the name change was set aside by a panel of Appeal Court judges in 2007, whereafter the Makhado Municipality restarted the process.

Part of the CA resolution states that the meeting has mandated the CA Exco to cite as respondents any applicable organ of state, including the Makhado Municipality, the Regional Geographical Names Council as well as the National Geographical Names Council.

The appointed attorneys and advocate will work on a contingency basis, and if they succeed in their case, they will recover their costs from any of the respondents against whom the court may make a decision

to pay the costs.

The previous name change case cost the State approximately R500 000 in taxed costs.

The members of the general meeting of the CA understood that “if their legal team is not successful in the review application, the court may make a cost order against the CA and that they will be responsible for payment of the costs of the successful respondent as may be made by court order if applicable”.

The CA’s secretary, Ms Inga Gilfillan, said that the constitution of the CA limited financial responsibility in such a case to R1 per member. The CA directly and indirectly represents about 90 0000 members. Gilfillan said that they already had donations pledged if necessary.

The CA Chairperson, Mr André Naudé, said that he was not surprised by the unanimous decision of the general meeting to take the matter to court on review.

“People are definitely more interested this time round. We had 2 000 more signatures on our petition lists. At the meeting, the synergy between cultural groups was demonstrated,” Naudé said.

Nearly half of the attendees came from the Shangaan cultural group. Naudé said that some of the large organisations in town sent mainly their chairpersons to represent them.

Well-known Silver (58) found dead This week started with a huge shock for the residents of Midoroni village, after the body of Mr Aifheli Freddy Khalushi (58) was found dead in the bushes by pupils who were going to school on Monday morning.

The traumatised pupils then alerted Khalushi’s family, who called the police. Although the cause of his death is still not known, residents suspect that he was murdered.

The station commander of Tshilwavhusiku Police Station, Col Freddy Shirinda, said that when the police arrived at the scene, they inspected the body, together with members of the family. “The body had no wounds and the cause of his death is still not known,” he said.

Shirinda said that the police have opened an inquest docket, following the incident and investigations are currently underway to determine the cause of Khalushi’s death. “The post mortem will determine if there was any foul play,” he added.

The result was not yet available at the time of going to press.

Shirinda warned residents who are alleging that the man might have been murdered. He said that people must stop pointing fingers. “Anyone with information regarding what has happened must just call the police and furnish us with the information. We do not even want those people to reveal their names. They must just call us and give us the information, and then we will investigate,” said Shirinda.

Khalushi’s right shoe was found more than 500m away from the scene where his body was found. He was known as “Silver” in the village and is depicted by many residents as somebody who was very polite and never quarrelled with anyone. “He was a good man and did not deserve

to die like this,” said members of the community.

Close family members and relatives were very emotional and broke out in tears when Khalushi’s body was being taken away from the scene by the forensic pathologists. A brother of the deceased, Mr Vhumbani Khalushi, said that the way the man had died affected the whole family. “We are worried and still traumatised about the incident. We were greatly saddened about his death,” he said.

He added that his brother was healthy. “I was with him on Sunday, the day before he was found dead. It really pains me a lot,” said Vhumbeni.

R20m available for treatment works Makhado Municipality Mayor Cllr David Mutavhatsindi said that R20 million had been made available to finalise the construction of the Makhado Waste Water Treatment Works that is currently under construction in Makhado. This was during the Makhado Municipality’s budget ceremony that was held at Tshedza Hall outside Louis Trichardt last

Saturday night.

The project was first funded for R46 million by the Vhembe District Municipality.

Mutavhatsindi said that the Vhembe District Municipality had recently injected an additional R20 million into the project. He said that the project would ensure that public water resources were not polluted.

“The project will go a long

way toward improving the ‘green drop’ water quality standard of the municipality,” he said.

The project started in June last year and is nearing completion.

Mirror also learnt that the project, which is being constructed

by Rubicon Civils, has created temporary employment to 121 members of the community.

The waste water treatment works is being constructed on the Rietvlei Farm along the Madombidzha road.

Mutavhatsindi said that due to the influx of residents and the extension of the residential area in town, the current treatment works is unable to cope.

“As a result, we decided to construct the new treatment works,” he said.

The R1,4 million aircraft, as well as night vision equipment, was donated on behalf of the park’s ranger corps by the SANParks Honorary Rangers.

According to the managing executive of the KNP, Mr Abe Sibiya, the Bantam and other equipment will considerably enhance the effectiveness of the ranger corps “by providing them with tools to patrol over larger areas.”

He said that with the budget

constraints affecting everybody globally, the Bantam would complement the other aircraft already in use.

He added that the park’s anti-poaching teams could no longer patrol on foot, bicycle, motorbike or in a vehicle only and that they must be able to conduct aerial patrols “armed with sophisticated field equipment.”

Sibiya added that in the first five months of this year alone, rhino poached in South Africa had already exceeded 235. He mentioned that it was no secret that the fight against poaching “is ever present and continues today with an intensity that has never been seen before.”

He said the rangers continued to find well-equipped poachers

who aimed to capitalise illegally on the park’s natural heritage. “I therefore would like to encourage all the citizens of the country to rally behind the park’s rangers as the eyes and ears of the world are on us.”

Apart from the Bantam aircraft and equipment, the honorary rangers also contributed to the operational cost of the Bantam to the value of R100 000. The equipment includes torches, night vision goggles, thermal binoculars and scope mounts, which will all be used during patrols and other vital anti-poaching work.

Sibiya praised the honorary rangers for their determination to continue to make a difference as far as anti-poaching is concerned.

Two countries clean-up a success

Leopards supporters were treated like kings during a year-end function held in their honour last week. During the event, held at the Khoroni Hotel last Saturday, the supporters were given the opportunity to address the management. They put several proposals to the management, who promised to look at them. On behalf of the mamagement, Mr Tshifhiwa Thidiela said they were trying to reach out to their fans wherever they might be. “We are a team because of these supporters. They have been with us through thick and thin and this is a way of saying thank you to them,” he said.

South African and Zimbab­ wean officials operating at the Beit Bridge border post embarked on a massive joint clean-up campaign along the Limpopo River two weeks ago.

The five-hour programme, dubbed the Two-Countries Clean-up Campaign, coincided with the World Environment Day commemorations. The exercise was spearheaded and co-ordinated by the two countries’ port health departments operating at the border post.

The South African port health coordinator at Beit Bridge, Mr David Ramuthiugi, said the clean-up exercise was aimed at raising awareness with travellers and border officials on solid-waste management and disposal along the border post.

“We conducted the exercise with various stakeholders from Zimbabwe and South Africa

to conscientise travellers on the need to keep our environment clean, particularly when it comes to solid-waste disposal.

The Beit Bridge border post is the shop window to both Zimbabwe and South Africa.

We should keep it clean all the times, so that we are able to attract more visitors and international tourists to our countries,” he said.

Speaking during the exercise, Zimbabwe’s district environmental officer for Beit Bridge, Mr Notho Dube, said the cleanup was in line with the International Health Regulation (IHR) requirement of 2005, of which Zimbabwe and South Africa are signatories.

“We embarked on the joint campaign involving various key stakeholders operating at the border post on both the Zimbabwean and South African side. As regulatory authorities,

we have a mandate to ensure that our ports of entry are kept clean and we noted that Beit Bridge needed to be spruced up,” he added.

Dube said they intended to conduct similar exercises quarterly.

Other stakeholders who participated in the clean-up campaign included the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) and South African Revenue Service (SARS) officials, immigration officers from the two countries, New Limpopo Bridge (NLB) company employees, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and agriculture inspectors from Zimbabwe and South Africa. The Environmental Management Agency (EMA), Zimbabwe Prisons Service officers, Beit Bridge Town Council and Musina Municipality workers also participated in the campaign.

South African trucker robbed in Zim Two unknown suspects raided a truck port in Beit Bridge, attacked a South African trucker driver and tied up a security guard’s hands before robbing the two men of cellphones and money, police have said.

The local police spokesperson, Insp Tafanana Dzirutwe, said that the incident occurred two weeks ago.

No food for Petamukanda Junior’s pupils Learners at Petamukanda Junior Primary School in Madombidzha village went without food for about three weeks.

Children were being served a spoonful of bean soup each day and nothing more substantial.

This spoonful of food had to sustain them through six school hours before they could be released to eat at home after school.

It was only after enquiries by theLimpopo Mirror that pupils were served government-subsidised food again on Monday last week.

The school principal, Mr AD Doboro, said he couldn’t comment and referred the paper to a Mr Michael Muungulwa from the Soutpansberg East Circuit office

in Louis Trichardt.

When Limpopo Mirror’s correspondent introduced himself and explained the reason for contacting him, Muungulwa got infuriated, saying that he didn’t deal with food before he cut the line and switched his mobile phone off.

Mr Peter Tolo, provincial nutrition officer on governmentsubsidised food for schools, said this was a critical case on which he did not wish to comment at length. Mr Tolo told the Limpopo Mirror that he would forward the report to his manager, who might then decide what to do. Mercedes’ latest generation M-Class can go for 1 500 kilometres between refills Mercedes-Benz have launched their third-generation M-Class SUVs with permanent allwheel drive.

Not only does the M-Class deliver exceptional safety and well-balanced ride comfort, but excellent driving dynamics, both on and off the road, as well.

What’s more, this new M-Class features an array of new chassis developments and innovative dynamic handling control systems which further enhance both driving enjoyment and handling safety. The Makuleke community, which made history in 2007 when it won a restitution case that gave them back 25 000 hectares of land, has hailed the new deal that they have entered into with SanParks to jointly manage their land, known as the Makuleke Contractual Park.

The two parties signed the Conservation and Development Framework near Phalaborwa a fortnight ago. The framework calls for the joint management of the area owned by the community, an area that has a high concentration of animals and plants, and SanParks.

At present, the area has two lodges, The Wilderness and the Outpost. After both parties had signed the agreement, the chairman of the Makuleke Community Property Association, Mr Bios Hlungwani, said the agreement meant so much to the commu-

nity as it would yield more jobs for community members. The traditional head of the community, Joas Makuleke, known as Hosi Makuleke, also attended the event. “After a long process of participation, we are happy to have arrived where we are. At least we are not like Moses, who never saw the Promised Land.

This plan will set our course for a successful future for the benefit of all,” he said. Dr Freek Venter, who represented SanParks, endorsed Hlungwani’s view and added:”It is critical that a ba­lance between conservation and development be achieved, with one supporting the other. We feel that CDF has found a way to balance these imperatives to the benefit of both the community and the environment. The more the community gets involved in conservation, the more there will be a rosy future for our environment.”

No water at Tongwe High School A serious water shortage has hit Tongwe High School outside Beit Bridge after the local supply dam went dry amid growing fears of another cholera outbreak in the district.

In 2008, the border town was hit by a devastating cholera outbreak, a development that was largely attributed to the water crisis, coupled with unhygienic water sources and constant sewer bursts.

There are also reports that some pupils were sent home after contracting diarrhoea.

The local education director, Mrs Tumisang Thabela, confirmed the latest development to Limpopo Mirror, saying they had since brought the issue before the Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA). “We have a serious water crisis at Tongwe High School. ZINWA is no longer able to provide the commodity because the supply dam has gone,” she said.

Mrs Thabela said the issue was now being handled by the local civil protection unit (CPU).

“We have since notified ZINWA of the problem and the issue is now being handled by the CPU. Our fear is that if this problem is not addressed as a matter of urgency, we are likely to have a recurrence of the cholera outbreak and other waterborne

diseases,” she said. Teachers and pupils are now relying on borehole water, which they share with the local community.

According to school authorities, the prevailing water crisis has been ongoing for the past two weeks. Toilets at the hostels are no longer functioning, due to a lack of water, putting the lives of boarders at risk.

A team from the Department of Health and Child Welfare was also recently deployed to the school to assess the quality of the water. The Beit Bridge Rural District Council and ZINWA have since last week been making daily deliveries of clean water from the border town to the school.

The ZINWA catchment area manager, Mr Tommy Rosen, attributed the water problem to the sharp decline in water levels at Tongwe Dam, which supplies the school with water. He said, however, that they had since installed an electric submersible pump, which pumps borehole water into the school’s storage tanks as a temporary measure.

The latest development has also affected farmers at Tongwe Irrigation Scheme, who rely on the local dam for water.

Tongwe High School, which is situated about 40km out of Beit Bridge town, has a total enrolment of 486 pupils. The school has a boarding facility, which caters for at least 336 children.

Second gospel album for Luvhimbi Timmy Luvhimbi, whose first gospel album was received very well when it came out in 2008, released his new album on Saturday (1st June). The album is titled Solid Rock on which I stand.

The album comprises 12 tracks which are full of soft rhythms and gentle tones. “This is my second project and I like its content,” says Luvhimbi, who instantly became known by the name Timmy to his fans, after the release of his first album Old Time Religion. “When I get into the studio, I need to come out with work which will encourage and motivate people. I expect my songs to encourage people to face God for comfort, advice and help in times of life's storms.”

On Timmy's latest offering, fans might find songs like Golgotha, Bind us together and Dzina lau likhethwe worth listening to. They are meditative, gentle and melodious.

He says he believes that Solid Rock on which I stand will definitely mean a lot to everyone who gives the songs a listening ear, as it did to people who attended the initial launch of the album at the AFM church on Sunday. “I felt I had to have the first launch at the church, as it's where I'd started my music,” Timmy explains.

and church band in the Ravele branch of the Apostolic Faith Mission (AFM). In the band, he played keyboard and bass guitar. The experience equipped him for future times as a recording artist.

He says that his pastors, Abel Raluare and Reuben Mamukhwana, motivated him to take his singing gift seriously.

Like most musicians, Timmy complains about the malignant spread of music piracy.

“Artists earn almost nothing from their work today,” he says. He adds that as a musician, he has a full-time job to maintain his livelihood, so he cannot walk the streets, taxi ranks and bus stations selling his music like people who pirate musicians' work do. “If people find it hard to get our music, they should at least try to search for us on the Internet or else give us a call,” he says. “We'll make sure that we deliver original music to them.”

Joshua Kgabo buried at Mbaleni One of Vhembe’s founding industrialists and a successful businessman, Takalani Joshua Kgabo, was laid to rest at the Mbaleni Cemetery in Thohoyandou at the weekend.

The burial on Saturday followed a memorial service held at Thohoyandou on Friday, where speakers eulogized him as a generous man who assisted many who are today contributing to their communities.

He was also described as a staunch church member. Hundreds of relatives, community members, friends and many from the business fraternity filled the Tshilidzini Dutch Reformed Church Hall.

Those who could not be housed in the church followed the proceedings from an adjacent tent, where a big screen had

been put up.

There were so many cars that the parking at Tshilidzini was filled to capacity and many cars lined the main road to Thohoyandou outside the church.

Addressing the mourners in church, Ms Maria Mashimbwi, the deceased’s sister, said that Kgabo had been a pillar of strength in the family. “He was a unifying factor and his generosity did not have boundaries.

He helped even those who were not members of the family but needed help.”

Representing the children, Rudzani Kgabo said they would never forget the love their father showed them. Rudzani also read an obituary that was written by Kgabo himself.

Kgabo of Thohoyandou passed away on June 3 at the

age of 63. Kgabo was the second son of Luca and Anna Kgabo of Ha-Maduwa village, Grootplaas Ha-Nthabalala.

He passed his Std 6 in 1959 and left for Johannesburg, where he initially worked. He came back and worked as a construction worker in Lenyenye, Tzaneen, and later in Louis Trichardt.

He started his business in 1968, selling goods in different towns.

He started a leather-making company in 1972, which resulted in his family’s relocating to Makwarela.

He opened a supermarket in Maniini in 1979, which was followed by a shoe shop, Jay Kay Shoe Salon, opened in Thohoyandou in 1980, where he worked for the rest of his life.

Law enforcement officials confiscated over 16 million illegal cigarettes during the month of May, from raids and seizures across the country.

The illicit trade in cigarettes has become a serious problem in South Africa, with major inflows into the country from Zimbabwe.

SAPS border control officials made a major breakthrough on 30 May, seizing around 11 million illegal cigarettes at Beit Bridge.

Man arrested for killing his own mother A 36-year-old Zimbabwean man from Gwelutshena village outside Beit Bridge ran amok and axed his mother to death before handing himself over to authorities while still carrying the blood-stained axe.

The suspect allegedly killed his mother, Mrs Thandiwe Moyo (56), about three weeks ago.

They were staying in the same home.

The police spokesperson, Assistant Insp Siphiwe Makonese, said they suspected the man was mentally challenged.

“On the day of the incident, Mrs Moyo left home to fetch water from a nearby river. On her way back, she met her son, who was carrying an axe and two empty five-litre containers,” said Makonese.

She said it was suspected that the man started to attack his mother. He allegedly struck her on the forehead with the axe and she died instantly.

When he realised he had killed his mother, he went to a member of the local neighbourhood watch committee, Mr Douglas

Nkomo, and told him what he had done. “He was still holding the bloody axe, and when Mr Nkomo asked him to hold out his hands, he complied. Nkomo then handcuffed him and took him to the local police station,” Makonese said.

According to her, investigations revealed that Moyo had a history of mental illness. “He is being held at the police station, together with his medical records. His mother’s body was taken to the local hospital for a post mortem,” she said.

MEC warns healers to “stay away from ritual killings” Smalle to lead DA in Limpopo Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Mrs Fulufhelo Florence Radzilani lashed out at traditional healers who still believe that body parts can be used to heal people. She was speaking during a special meeting with traditional healers and the police in Makhado on Monday.

Radzilani said that engaging in ritual murder was a crime and inhumane and cruel. She said that those found engaging in ritual murders would be put behind bars where they belonged. Radzilani added that her department would try by

“Stay away from ritual killings,” Radzilani warned. She further appealed to all traditional healers not to engage in ritual killings. According to Radzilani, the Vhembe District is number one in

terms of ritual killings in the province.

“It is only in Vhembe where we hear of ritual killings. This is not happening in other districts in the province,” said Radzilani.

Her visits comes after a sangoma and his five co-accused were arrested for allegedly ritually killing the 52-yearold Mr Philip Bendzani, a resident of Ha-Mutonga village outside Elim. The incident happened at Munuzwu Farm near Sweet Waters three weeks ago.

Meanwhile, the president of the SADC Unified Ancestors Traditional Practitioners Association, Dr Sylvester Hlathi, dismissed claims that body parts could be used as traditional medicine.

He said that there was just a demon in society that made people kill unnecessarily. “Real traditional healers do not kill people. It is very painful to see traditional healers engaging in ritual killings,” he said.

Maree takes top honours in Kremetart Cycle Race The past weekend saw some 2 000 cyclists descend on Makhado for participation in the 22nd annual PPC Kremetart Cycle races.

For many it was an epic ride, which saw early-morning smiles disappear as each of the four stages of the 175km main event took more and more out of riders. A chilly and strong side wind in the Waterpoort/ Vivo stage also did not make it easier for riders, and by lunchtime, many were already minutes off their pace compared to previous years.

Saturday’s strong wind did not, however, deter the top names and teams in South African cycling, with team Tasol GT putting in a strong performance to take three of the four stages in the senior men’s race. Tasol GT’s David Maree clinched the yellow jersey in the first 53km stage from Makhado to Waterpoort, with Willie Smith from team Toyota CSA cycling home in second place and Hanco Kachellhoffer (Tasol GT) in third place.

Team Tasol also did well to secure teammate Nolan Hoffman a stage win in the relatively flat Waterpoort-toVivo stage. It was between him and team Bonitas’s Johan Rabie at the sprint to the finish, with Rabie finish-

ing second and Maree clinching third place. With the wind now almost at their backs, stage three from Waterpoort to Schoemansdal took place at a blistering pace. The gruelling uphill stage finish at Schoemansdal saw the top riders having to push hard at the end, with Maree securing his second stage win and Smit once again in second place and Kachelhoffer again in third place.

At the start of the final 22km stage back to Makhado, the only thing that stood between the riders and the finishing line was the 4km climb at Otto’s Hoogte. From there it was a downhill sprint to the finish. This time round, Kachelhoffer was just too strong, finishing first, followed

by Julius Corbet in second place and Maree third. Maree’s two stage wins were enough for him to be crowned overall winner in a combined time of 04:23:48. Kachelhoffer was second overall in 04:23:52, with Willie Smit a mere second later in overall third place in 04:23:53.

The women’s race was a onewoman affair, with An-Li Pretorius from team MTN-Qhubeka snatching victory in all four stages from defending champion and Kremetart Brand Ambassador Anriette Schoe-

man. Schoeman, riding for Mecer NMMU, this year only managed four second-place finishes in each of the stages.

With four stage wins under her belt, Pretorius was crowned overall women’s winner in a combined time of 05:20:39, with Schoeman in second position overall in a combined time of 05:20:43 and Cycle Lab Toyota’s Lynette Burger third in a time of 05:21:19.

Several Makhado LFA teams fined by DC Manavhela Black Rangers were found guilty of fielding an improperly registered player during a disciplinary hearing of the Makhado LFA held in Makhado last Saturday.

Rangers were fined R2 000 and three points were awarded to their opponents, Vuwani Liverpool.

Zamenkomste Liverpool received the same fine for fielding an unregistered player in their match against Tshikhwani Stone Breakers. Benfica FC committed the same offence in their match against Rabali Peace Makers.

They were also fined R2 000.

Mambedi Sundowns also received a fine of R2 000 for using

an unregistered player when they played against Valdezia Juventus. In all the cases, the guilty teams forfeited the league points to their opponents.

Maisa Rainbow received a fine of R1500 for assaulting the referee in their match against LTT Murunwa. Phadzima Shining Stars were fined R1500 for assaulting the referee in the match against Tshirenzheni Peace Makers, while Nesengani United received the same fine for the same offence in their match against Hanani Home Defenders.

Singo Disco Five were fined R800 for causing the abandonment of the match against Sundani City Rovers. The three

match points were also awarded to City Rovers.

Murunwa X1 Experience were fined R800 for bringing the league into disrepute when they played Murunwa X1 and they forfeited the points to their opponents.

Mashau Tiger Boys were fined R800 for failure to honour the match against Mutsha Atlantic FC. Manyii Young Stars were fined R3 000 for assaulting a referee. R1 000 was suspended for a year and the rest (R2 000) must be paid within 30 days.

Mambvuka Heroes were fined R800 for late arrival at a match and the match points were awarded to Benfica FC.

Rovers complained to the league two days after playing their last league match last month. In their letter of complaint, Rovers alleged that Chippa United had fielded an improperly registered player in some of their matches. The league’s disciplinary committee ruled in favour of Chippa United.

Blackburn Rovers were not happy with the outcome and they filed an appeal as a result. The arbitrator upheld the disciplinary committee’s ruling.

South Africa deports more illegal Zimbabweans South Africa deported 587 Zimbabweans through the Beit Bridge Border Post on Monday, bringing to 25 827 the total number of illegal immigrants brought home since the government resumed the exercise last October.

Zimbabwe’s regional immigration manager in charge of the Beit Bridge Border Post, Mr Charles Gwede, said between 1 January and 11 June, they handled 18 072 deportees, while the figure was 7 755 last year between 7 October and 31 December.

The latest batch of deportees was brought in aboard seven buses from the Lindela Detention Centre outside Johannesburg.

Gwede said several border jumpers were taking advantage of the drop in water

levels in the Limpopo River to cross the border illegally. He warned people against crossing into South Africa illegally, as they are at risk of being attacked by robbers who operate along the river.

Gwede expressed concern over the continuous haphazard deportation of exconvicts, saying it fuelled crime in the border town. “South African authorities are supposed to deport ex-convicts separately, but, sadly, we continue to receive them as a mixed batch and that is now a major challenge. They are supposed to be investigated first and then categorised accordingly, because most of them end up engaging in criminal activities,” he said.

On arrival in the country, the returnees

are received by the Immigration authorities at the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Beit Bridge Reception and Support Centre (BRSC), who investigate them to ascertain whether they are bona fide Zimbabweans.

Soon after that process, IOM offers the deportees overnight accommodation, medication, food and transport to proceed to their respective homes.

The IOM BRSC has the capacity to accommodate 600 people at any given time.

Some of the deportees turn down any form of assistance from the IOM and those who opt to go home using their own means are released. Most of them resort to crossing back to South Africa illegally.

hecking the current state of rural and township development, a lot still needs to be done and implemented.

What is killing our country, villages and townships, is the deployment of cadres without credentials. Populism, a lack of basic education and the enjoyment of support without content are the tools of mass destruction that we have ignored so many years; hence there is a never-ending strike.

Ward councillors, mayors and PR representatives have been appointed without checking credentials and this has led to poor performance and a lack of practical implementations.

How many times have we appointed ward councillors who lack political content, political education and an understanding of running the villages and townships?

Does being in politics for a period of 20 years mean a person should be given a platform to run a certain territory?

Let’s go back to the drawingboard and organise our plans. What is wrong with empowering the youth? I am not against the appointment of old people, but history has proven them wrong.

Basic delivery issues like the provision of toilets and water are still important in rural areas and townships.

People have been appointed without checking whether they have what it takes.

Let’s deploy with a vision.

Khomola resigns as acting manager

Takalani Khomola, the acting station manager of controversial community radio station Makhado FM, announced his resignation from the station this week.

Khomola resigned on Monday and handed a letter to the station where this was confirmed.

Khomola was suspended a few months ago, following allegations of maladministration.

"I am still being owed R50 000 in wages. I must be given the money I worked for according to my contract," he added. According to Khomola he is now focussing his energy on running his events management company.

The station's broadcasting license is said to be expiring soon. It was not clear whether the management had applied for a renewal of this license and whether Icasa will consider such a request. Icasa spokesperson Mr Paseka Maleka was not available for comment in this regard.The programme manager, Mr Makonde Mbedzi, said no one had been appointed in Mr Khomola's position.

According to him, he is filling in as acting manager for the time being.

One-hundred-and-thirty-four teams, which are affiliated to the Vhembe SAB League, will take part in the competition.

The acting executive mayor of the Vhembe District Municipality, Cllr Lucas Manyuha, delivered the keynote address during the ceremony. He revealed that the district is facing a serious backlog with regard to the provision and the development of sports facilities within their area of jurisdiction.

He further stated that his

municipality had set aside an amount of R400 000 for this year’s mayoral tournament. He indicated that a local entrepreneur, Mrs Emily Thifhelimbilu Shiruma of the Mulondoli Life Style Centre, had pumped in R150 000 towards the tournament.

Mrs Shiruma stated that her company would continue to sponsor the competition in the coming years. During the ceremony, Cllr Manyuha handed over a cheque to the value of R550 000 to the president of the SAFA Vhembe Regional Football Association, Mr George Kubayi.

According to Manyuha, the champions of the competition will take home R40 000, two

soccer kits, gold medals and a floating trophy. The runnersup will receive R25 000 and a soccer kit, while R15 000 and a soccer kit await the team that will obtain the third prize in the competition.

The league prizes for the 2011/12 soccer season were distributed to the 134 teams affiliated to the association during the ceremony.

The toss for the Vhembe District Mayoral Challenge Cup was held at Tshilamba, Thohoyandou and Makhado the following day.

The first matches will be played at different venues this weekend. The final will be played on Saturday, 28 July, at a venue still to be announced.

Major facelift for rural primary school Pupils of Magidi Primary School will no longer face the hazard of using pit toilets and, in the process, being exposed to unsafe health practices.

This is all thanks to the generosity of the giant insurance company, Old Mutual, which built the school a new and improved ablution block and also refurbished the school walls.

The company, which has spent millions on community upliftment over the years, launched the project two months ago and it was completed last week. The

project was officially handed over to the school during a function attended by community structures, the local ward councillor, the traditional leader and the circuit manager and staff from Old Mutual.

The school only had two oldstyle pit toilets before, which were a health hazard and a danger to the pupils.

Handing over the project, Mr Lucky Mani, Old Mutual’s area manager for Thohoyandou, Giyani, Tzaneen and Phalaborwa, said it had always been his com-

pany’s priority to improve the living conditions in communities.

He said they had contributed to the community in many ways and one of their focus areas was education. “Children are the future, and if we do not take care and look after them, our future cannot be guaranteed,” he added.

The principal of the school, Ms Nkhangweleni Mukwevho, was over the moon.

“We have been using the same toilets since 1986 and they were no longer suitable for use by the pupils,” she said.

Stone Breakers too good for Gogobole Tshikhwani Stone Breakers were too strong for Gogobole Bucs when they hammered them 4-1 in a Limpopo Dairy League match at Gogobole on Sunday.
