Should the president of Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila FC (TTM), Mr Masala Mulaudzi, succeed in his attempt to procure an Absa Premiership franchise as anticipated, Thulamela Municipality will be ready to cater for two Absa Premiership clubs.

Mr Ronald Makhadi, the manager for sports and recreation at the municipality, said that when reacting to the announcement made by Mr Mulaudzi during an interview at one of the local radio stations.

In the radio interview, Mulaudzi said that he was in the process of buying an elite league status. According to him, the process was in the final stages and that it was a matter of time before the deal was signed. He further stated that he was selling the club’s

GladAfrica Championship franchise and that several prospective buyers had shown interest in the status.

He also stated that they would continue to use the Thohoyandou Stadium as their home ground in their Absa Premiership campaign. Asked whether Mr Mulaudzi’s procurement of the status would not result in the overutilization of the Thohoyandou Stadium, Makhadi said no reason existed for anyone to press the panic button.

He stated that they would manage the facility properly, saying the two clubs, TTM and Black Leopards, would be catered for accordingly. He added that the two clubs should arrange between themselves to avoid clashes for the home fixtures. “We will continue to manage the Thohoyandou Stadium the way we did over the past three years after TTM bought the GladAfrica Champi-

According to him, the only difference is that TTM will be campaigning in the Absa Premiership Division, but the way they had been managing the stadium would not change.

He further revealed that they would take some of the matches to the Makwarela Stadium.

He stated that the construction of the Makwarela Stadium was in the final stages.

He said that the Makwarela Stadium would be able accommodate 8 000 spectators. Asked about the status of the Makhuvha Stadium, Makhadi said that the process of refurbishing the facility had been about to start when the state president pronounced the national lockdown in March. He stressed the fact that Makhuvha Stadium will supplement the Thohoyandou and Makwarela Stadiums upon completion of the refurbishment process.

Mr Albert Matsaung, the Limpopo Department of Home Affairs’ provincial manager, said the safety of employees was a priority. “We have supplied all 619 DHA employees in the province with masks and sanitizers.

Each employee has a 500ml container of sanitizer and each office has been supplied with a 25-litre sanitizer for refilling,” said Matsaung.

Asked about disinfecting workplaces, Matsaung said the province was busy with quotations and promised that

Regarding the toilets at Malamulele, Matsaung said staff toilets were working but public toilets were being attended to.

Late last week an announcement was made that the Malamulele and Giyani offices had been closed because of non-compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act. A statement from the PSA’s provincial chairperson says that the Department of Employment and Labour had conducted an inspection and a prohibition notice had been issued.

Later, in 2019, he had come back to Vhembe where he found a local brand, named Dope Ice, which has a boutique in Makhuvha. “They were hosting a modelling contest where they wanted to select brand ambassadors,” he said. “I never hesitated to join the competition believing in the fanbase I had created on my Facebook page (soigneer the toxic). He said he called himself ‘soigné’ which simply means to be well groomed. “The name has stuck on me; everyone calls me Soigné now,” he said with a smile.

Lutshima Foundation and Strong Training donate 380 cloth masks

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho Strong Training Academy, in partnership with the Lutshima Foundation, has donated 380 cloth masks to the communities of Tswinga and Ngovhela villages.

The director of both the company and the foundation, Dr Lucky Mashudu Lutshima, decided to plough back into the two communities by donating cloth masks to vulnerable pensioners to protect them from Covid-19, which has now been declared as the fastest-killing pandemic by the World Health Organization.

Dr Lutshima, a well-known businessman, had offices and a shooting range in the two

communities, and he indicated that he could not fold his arms while the communities were most vulnerable to the disease because of a lack of masks.

“As the foundation, we are taking action to improve the lifestyle and living conditions of the poor, the disabled, the unemployed and marginalised South Africans,” he said.

Lutshima thanked Pres Cyril Ramaphosa and his government for taking measures to prevent the rapid spread of the coronavirus.

The spokesperson of both the company and the foundation, Mr Rofhiwa Phaswana, who was handing over some of the masks to pensioners, indicated that the Lutshima Foundation

had mobilised resources to help the people.

“Lives should be saved at all cost and the people of Vhembe should be responsible by carrying [out] all the safety precautions that the government wants every citizen to adhere to,” he said.

The foundation expressed its gratitude to women and men who dedicated their time during this difficult time to manufacture masks for the foundation. “We are planning to manufacture about 2 000 masks to be shared between the two villages, for pupils, before the schools reopen,” he said. “We need to protect our children from the spread of the pandemic.”

Limpopo does not have the water for such an SEZ

By Anton van Zyl Is the planned Musina-Makhado Special Economic Zone (SEZ) a mere “speculative bubble”, is it a “nightmarish scam” or will it eventually succeed in providing jobs to more than 20 800 people? The bigger question is whether the region has the water resources to sustain such ambitious plans.

Last week an independently commissioned research report was published, which focuses on the water risks of coal driven mega projects in Limpopo. The study looked at two projects, the Mokolo Crocodile West Augmentation Project (MCWAP) and the Electro Metallurgical Special Economic Zone (EMSEZ) between Makhado and Musina.

The research was done by Victor Munnik from the Society Work and Politics (SWOP) Institute from the University of the Witwatersrand. It was commissioned by the Freidrich Ebert Stiftung’s SA office.

In the study some worrying figures are mentioned as to the water consumption of a coal-driven industrial complex. It indicates that the Limpopo river basin can by no means provide the water needed for such a development.

Plans to channel water from other sources are described as unrealistic and dangerous. These plans include getting water from the Zhovhe dam in Zimbabwe or the Tuli Karoo aquiver, which overlaps into Botswana.

In his study Munnik discusses the complexity of control over water resources in Limpopo, especially because four countries, Botswana, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Mozambique are involved. The Limpopo river is a “closed catchment”, because all water resources have been allocated to activities already in operation, says Munnik.

A thirsty SEZ? The idea to establish a mega industrial park close to the country’s northern border surfaced around 2014 and brought to the fore a somewhat controversial Chinese businessman, Mr Ning Yat Hoi. He is the chairman of the SEZ operator, South African Energy Metallurgical Base (Pty) Ltd. When the 90-year contract was signed in September 2017 to appoint Mr Hoi’s company as sole operator of the special economic zone, he was already embroiled in controversy. In April 2017 he was removed as CEO of the international mining group ASA Resources, following alleged irregularities. The SA Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) seemingly did not pick up on any of the controversies and the 90year contract, with a further 30-year extension option, was signed on 15 September 2017.

In an interview in May 2019 Hoi stated that a 20 Mtpa (million tons per annum) coal-washing plant, a 3 300 Mw coal-fired power plant, a 3 Mtpa coke plant and a 390 Mw waste-heat power plant will be built. The other factories planned are a 3 Mtpa high-carbon ferrochrome plant, a 1 Mtpa ferromanganese plant, a 500 000 tons per annum (tpa) silicon manganese plant, a 3 Mtpa stainless steel plant, a 1 Mtpa high-vanadium steel plant, a 1 Mtpa high-manganese steel plant, a 5 Mtpa metallurgical lime plant, a 1,2 Mtpa titanium dioxide

Closer to where the EMSEZ is to be established, the water would need to come from the Sand River catchment area as well as the Nzhelele River and Nwanedzi River catchment.

The Sand River is the driest catchment, with limited surface water resources. It has exceptional groundwater reserves “which have been fully and possibly over-exploited, mostly by irrigation,” writes Munnik. The catchment uses far more water than it has available and the shortfall needs to be supplemented from other areas such as dams in the Luvhuvhu and Letaba catchments. The situation in the Nwanedzi River catchment is similar, if not worse.

Ramaano donates food parcels

By Silas Nduvheni A well-known lawyer in Thohoyandou, Mr Anton Ramaano, has reached out to about 70 needy families in the Tshikhudini and Ha-Mutoti villages with food parcels during this difficult time of COVID-19.

Ramaano said he was born and raised in poor family in the deep rural village of Duthuni where he used to sleep some nights without eating anything. When the coronavirus pandemic broke out, it reminded him of his bad days, and he thought of helping the less fortunate.

He was joined by Thovhele Gole Mphaphuli and Chief Watson Maraganedzha when handing over parcels for at least 70 households in Tshikhudini and Ha-Mutoti

villages in a ceremony held at the Rewards Dam Resort near Nandoni Dam on Friday.

According to Ramaano, two years ago he developed the Rewards Dam Resort at Ha-Mutoti village in the Ha-Mphaphuli dynasty and he thought of ploughing back into the communities who had lent him the land that he had developed into a full-fledged resort.

Thovhele Gole Mphaphuli said he was thankful for developers such Ramaano, who did not forget the poor and needy people around when he developed his resort. “I urge other businesspeople around Ha-Mphaphuli to emulate the good work of Ramaano, for remembering the poor and needy people during this difficult period,” said Thovhele Mphaphuli.

A traditional leader in Tshikhudini village, Chief Watson Maraganezha, said the food parcels came at the right time when they were needed most by poor and vulnerable members of his communities.

Tshikhudini is a rural village, where most of the people are not working, and with the lockdown, they have no other means of getting food for their families.

One of the beneficiaries of the food parcels, Vho-Mavu Samuel Mutaheli (63), the father of five children, and his wife were over the moon to find out that some people thought of the poor and needy people. Mutaheli said the food parcels came at the right time, the family’s food was about to be finished and he used to think how he and family would survive this lockdown period.

Motorists worried about stray cattle on roads to Sinthumule and Kutama

By Kaizer Nengovhela The problem of stray animals on the roads leading to Sinthumule and Kutama is surfacing once more. In the past few weeks, several incidents were reported where motorists collided with, among others, cattle on the R522 and D3715 roads.

Drivers who regularly make use of these roads complain that cattle can venture onto the road at any given time. One must constantly be wide awake and on the lookout for stray animals.

One such driver, Mr Rudzani Siliga, said the negligence of the herd boys and the cattle owners was becoming a serious problem. The problem is specifically serious in the early mornings and late afternoons, when visibility is low. He warned that more serious accidents would occur, and lives would be lost if the authorities did not start acting against the perpetrators.

Two weeks ago, a resident of Louis Trichardt was lucky to escape serious injuries in one such accident with cattle. She was on her way back to town in the late afternoon when cattle walked straight onto the road. Her vehicle was badly damaged. The owner of the cattle was nowhere to be found. The cattle were later found to have come from a piece of land near Tshiozwi village.

On Monday night (11th) a taxi collided with three cattle while driving on the D3715 road near Gogobole.

The spokesperson for the Makhado Municipality, Mr Louis Bobodi, warned that the owners

of the stray cattle that wander onto the roads might soon find themselves in serious trouble.

“Everybody knows that livestock are not allowed near the public roads,” he said. He said that cattle found on public roads would be impounded and the owners fined.

Bobodi appealed to the law-enforcement agencies to also assist the municipality and to act against people who are caught neglecting their cattle.

Challo B’s debut album

The 25-year-old started rapping in Tshivenda in 2007 and has released an album, an extended play (EP) and five mixtapes to date.

The new album contains songs such as Ndiupfa Nungo ft Cut'nPaste & Cody K, Mavu vhoni kanda, Tshifhinga ft Fizzy and many others.

The song was released on 5 May and is available online. The release of the song was inspired by the current situation the country is facing - the lockdown and COVID-19. "The song encourages people not to lose hope, but to keep trusting God, who is forever with us," she said.

Rofhiwa, from Tshidimbini village, said she started singing and dancing at an early age during the time of the Tshidimbini Community Club, which was formed in 1989. "That’s where it all started. I

used to dance, sing, and participate in drama. I would represent the group at parties and weddings through music. I was also lead singer at primary and high school assemblies," she said.

"I was the best singer during a talent search in 1996 at Tshivhase High School. I was imitating Rebecca Malope’s song Sicel’ Ukuthula. It was a great feeling. I then started taking music seriously.

People even started calling me Rebecca, some didn’t even know my real name, they thought Rebecca was my second name," she recalls.

In 1999, she started singing with recording artists such as Lufuno Dagada and Lawrence Mabasa as a backing vocalist. She also trains young gospel artists.

These five angels work tirelessly to feed Musina’s homeless Musina News Some people are still prepared to work and dedicate their life, energy, and time to helping the less privileged, for free. This is the encouraging story about the members of Messina Community Home-Based Care Project.

Since the start of the lockdown, these five individuals wake up every day and head to the Musina Show Grounds where they cook, clean and feed more than 200 homeless people who have been housed there as a precautionary measure to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

Their leader, Ms Violet Mudau, says that when they heard that homeless people were being housed at the show grounds, they never thought twice. “We heard that businesspeople were donating food and other essentials for those homeless people, and we thought it would be best for us to volunteer ourselves.

We have been there cooking, cleaning, and doing other domestic work for them. We

understand that these people did not choose to be what they are, and we felt that we have a role to play to assist them.”

Mudau says they arrive at the show grounds every day at 07:00 and left at 17:00. “We arrive there early and prepare breakfast for everyone. We then clean and prepare lunch for them and serve them. After that, we must make sure that their dinner is ready before we leave. We do this every day, including Saturdays and Sundays.”

Mudau’s colleague, Sarah Ndou, says she enjoys working for the less privileged. “We don’t even know one single person among them, but we feel it is important to help them. Some of them tell us how they fled from their countries and it is very painful. There are others who have come from as far as the Democratic Republic of Congo and they do not have relatives here. It is our duty to make sure that they feel at home during these trying times when the coronavirus pandemic is swiftly terrorizing

Ndou has thanked the businesspeople and individuals who are donating food and other essentials for the homeless people at the Musina Show Grounds. “The availability of food and essentials makes our job easier because it keeps us going. Imagine if they run out of food – this will definitely mean that we don’t have anything to cook for them. We really thank the donors for their good work.”

One of the homeless people housed at the show grounds is Tawanda Moyo, who originally came from Zimbabwe.

“My parents died many years ago and I travelled on foot to South Africa, hoping for a better life. I could not find a job and ended up staying in the streets of Musina. I thank everyone who is playing a role to make sure that we are safe here at the Musina Show Grounds. The risks of the coronavirus are minimised here because there are more controls than the ordinary lives that we live in the streets.”

Kagiso Trust launches Grade 12 radio campaign to assist learners Education The premature closure of schools because of the outbreak of COVID-19 in South Africa has resulted in both challenges and opportunities, with many learners missing out on large pieces of work, especially in term two. In an effort to support rural learners without access to television classes, computers or data, Kagiso Trust has partnered with the Limpopo Department of Education to provide radio lessons to our Grade 12 learners. The scheduled lessons commenced on Capricorn FM radio from Monday, 11 May. “Kagiso Trust has long believed that education is the key to overcoming poverty,” said the organisation’s CEO, Mankodi Moitse, in a press release. “Over the past 16 years, we have created education programmes structured to have the highest impact and greatest sustainability. Our work in the Free State is testament to that.

Now we are excited to see what work we can do together with the Limpopo Department of Education,” Moitse said.

Radio lessons will be hosted hourly on Capricorn FM, Sekhukhune FM and Tubatse FM from Monday to Sunday.

Capricorn FM will focus on mathematics, sciences, and technology (MST) subjects, including mathematics, mathematical literacy, physical science, life science and agricultural science. “These are the subjects that are highly enrolled and determine the standard and quality of education offered in Limpopo Province. Each live broadcast lesson will last for an hour per day during and after the lockdown period. The first 30 minutes is allocated to the teacher to mediate learning and the next 30 minutes will be reserved for the learners to interact with the teacher through questions or comments. Content will largely cover the scope of term 1 and 2 and will be supplemented by face-to-face contact sessions after learners have returned to school.

“In a province as large as Limpopo, radio is the perfect platform to reach most learners,” said Moitse. “This is about inclusivity, about access to information. It is about gathering together around a radio like we once all did. This is the new normal. We call upon everyone to support the radio lessons and #KagisoRadioTeachers – local teachers, broadcasting across Limpopo, straight into the homes of learners,” added Moitse.

Capricorn FM will broadcast lessons from 17:00 to 18:00 Monday to Friday on the Just Drive show, and every Saturday and Sunday from 09:00 to 10:00 on The Saturday Breakfast and The Sunday Restoration respectively. The Department of Social Development in the province put about 250 food parcels and 50 blankets in the Vhembe District Food Bank on Saturday, which is based at the offices of the Thulamela Local Municipality in Tshiulungoma.

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho The government is currently finalising the back-to-schoolin-phases programme for pupils after the schools were all shut down, following the announcement of the lockdown about two months ago.

Things might be harder for the pupils of Maphophe Primary School in Maphophe village, situated some 7km outside Saselamani town in the Collins Chabane Local Municipality.

The school boasted five blocks, of which two were damaged in a rainstorm about two years ago, and two more are just old and not habitable or conducive to being used to accommodate pupils during lessons. The last block has five classrooms, but only three are used for pupils while one is a

stationery storeroom.

According to the chairperson of the school-governing body, Mr Gezani Chauke, at least two mobile classrooms were delivered to the school, but the parents’ feeling was that the department should consider employing long-term measures for the school.

“We need proper classrooms,” he said. “It is winter now and the children have got to get back into the dilapidated classrooms, which are just like cold-rooms. The old blocks of classrooms are in a condition that they cannot be fixed because they are too old and shaky.”

Limpopo Department of Education’s spokesperson, Ms Tidimalo Chuene, admitted that the current school’s infrastructure was not in a good state but

Covid-19 puts a damper on Clarence Munyai’s dreams

South Africa’s national 200m record holder, Clarence Munyai, was supposed to run against the best in the world in the coming months, but because of the lockdown, all the races were called off.

"I was supposed to run in China this month, the Diamond League and world challenge races in Europe in June and July just before the Olympic Games,” he said.

"It encourages me that I am still young, and I will run with big names in future. My parents keep on encouraging me to train hard to achieve my dreams.” He hails from Ramaru

in the Nthabalala area.

Munyai started running at Heronbridge College, where he participated in all types of sports. His rugby coach told him to focus on running, because of how quick he was on the field.

He then moved to the University of Pretoria, where he started training and taking running seriously. Munyai won several 300 and 200 metres races nationally and abroad last year. In international 200m races, he won a race in Belgium, finished second in Switzerland, and ended in third position in Shanghai and Ostrava.

He is currently studying law through the University of South

Africa.

He encourages young athletes to never give up on their dreams and always work hard and believe that anything is possible, if you put your mind to it and work for it. "I was motivated by Usain Bolt and Justin Gatlin; they are two of the greatest athletes the sport has ever seen.

I would watch them on TV and always tell myself I was going to work so hard that I, too, could one day try and emulate what they did on the world stage. I was also motivated by the desire to win. I am a very goal-oriented person. I set out goals for myself and that motivates me and keeps me striving to try and better myself at all times."

Phasha started his football career at Mauluma TAB All Stars in the eighties before he was recruited by the late coach, Mr Donald Ramabulana, to join Tshikuwi Stone Breakers. Stone Breakers played in the National Professional League then and he played with the likes of Simon Ramabulana, Ace Muthelo and Killer Mulaudzi.

In 1995, he joined Kaizer XI at Musina, coached by Brighton Phiri. He later played with

the teams SuperSport United alongside players such as the late Thomas Madigage and Shane MacGregor.

In 1996, he joined Sibasa Black Leopards, owned by Mr Zachariah Mathelemusa. In 1998, Dynamos got promoted to the Premier League and bought him from Leopards to form a formidable combination with the likes of Josam Ndou, Links Ragimana, Magic Ratshivhadelo and Baldwin Maimela. By then he was coached by well-travelled coach Walter Rautman, as well as Shephard Murape.

He said that his most memorable match was against Mamelodi Sundowns, when he was named man of the match. He retired

from football in 2003 and started working at the Johannesburg Municipality in the water department as a supervisor. He also became coach of the City of Joburg squad and the Safa SAB team in Gauteng.

He believes youngsters need to put in more hard work if they want to go far with a football career. “Youngsters out there must know that it is not going to be easy. You need to be patient if you want to go far and believe in what you are doing and associate yourself with the right people.”

“We are praying to God to heal our land so that everything can get back to normal. Please stay at home and isolate yourself,” he said.

A scout from the University of Pretoria saw talent in Netshikulwe during the Coca Cola School Tournament last year. He was part of the University of Pretoria U/17 soccer team that went to Sweden last year.

Zulu said that his role model was Thembinkosi Lorch, the Orlando Pirates’ midfielder. His dream is to play at international level in three years’ time.

Young Vhugala Ndou of the rural village of Gaba excels in the male-dominated sport of rugby.

She started playing rugby in high school. She said when she was at school she participated in athletics, but when she was in Grade 11 in 2015, they introduced rugby at school. She joined the rugby team because she wanted to be fit for her athletics.

She said that the rugby coach was impressed with her progress in rugby and she made the Lions U/16 team and travelled to Cape Town.

Ndou is a hardworking rugby player who strives to be the best in everything she touches in life. She holds a degree from the University of Johannesburg. She is always willing to learn new things as well as achieve greater heights. She is currently studying at the University of Western Cape (UWC) in sports recreation and exercise science, as well as playing for the rugby team there.

However, she is trying to get into the Western Province senior women’s 15s team. She believes that room for improvement can always be found.

She is also playing for the UWC rugby 7s team.

"I am also part of the Springbok students and the Ladyblitz team.” Unfortunately, because of the outbreak of Covid-19, the world student tournament that was supposed to take place in Argentina this year was postponed.

She encourages ladies that rugby is played by men but perfected by women. "There is no sport that was designed for certain genders. As women we are restricted a lot and undermined in this game, which gives us more reason to prove people wrong."

Ntshangase uncertain about future A dark cloud hangs over the former Black Leopards’ player, Siphelele Leonard Ntshangase. In an interview with Limpopo Mirror, Ntshangase revealed that he did not have an idea what the future held for him at Kaizer Chiefs. The 26-yearold midfielder said his contract with the Soweto giants would expire at the end of next month.

According to him, no one at Chiefs has spoken with him about his future, something that has made him spend sleepless nights. He said that planning his future was difficult because his current employers had not shown him their intentions regarding his life after the expiry of his contract. What is probably adding to his worries is the fact that he is yet to feature in the Chiefs’ official game this season.

played for Chiefs on 27 April last year when he came on as a substitute in the Amakhosi’s 0-1 defeat at the hands of Bloemfontein Celtic at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane. Ntshangase further stated that negotiating new contracts with other clubs was difficult for him, because of his uncertainty about his future at Chiefs.

Asked whether he would consider going back to Black Leopards if the Thohoyandou side showed interest in his services, Ntshangase said Black Leopards had made him what he was. The former national U/23 player indicated that Thohoyandou was his second home and that he regarded the chairman of Black Leopards, Mr David Thidiela, as his father.

Ntshangase left Black Leopards for Baroka FC at the end of the 2016/17 soccer season.

He stayed for six months at

Baroka before migrating to Kaizer Chiefs in January 2018.

After signing a two-and halfyear contract with the club, Chiefs showed a lot of faith in him and gave him the coveted number 10 jersey. Unfortunately, Ntshangase did not live up to the expectations the club have had for him as he has not played for Chiefs in the last 30 official matches.
