The Mphephu-Ramabulana royal council will challenge the recommendations of the provincial and national Houses of Traditional Leaders. These houses filed a report in the Limpopo High Court last week wherein, among others, they state that Toni Mphephu Ramabulana cannot be king of the Vhavenda.

The spokesperson for the royal council, Mr Ntsieni Ramabulana, said in an interview earlier this week that they did not agree with all the findings of the Limpopo House of Traditional Leaders (LHTL) and the National House of Traditional Leaders (NHTL). When the case reaches the High Court, they will challenge these findings and present their arguments.

The two houses filed their recommendations last week as instructed by the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA). In April this year, the SCA ruled in favour

of Masindi Clementine Mphephu in her legal battle against Toni. The SCA set aside the recognition of Toni as king of the Vhavenda and ordered that the case be heard again in the Limpopo High Court and that a ruling be made on several burning issues.

The SCA also instructed the LHTL and the NHTL to provide the Court with clarity on three issues. The first was whether measures had been put in place to promote the principle of primogeniture in traditional communities.

This issue was fiercely debated in the case before the SCA, where Masindi argued that she had been side-lined in the succession battle because of her gender.

The two houses cite several examples where women are in leadership positions. They believe that much has been done the past decade to adhere to the requirements of the Constitution. “The Vhavenda customary law of succession had already been changed to accommodate women,” state the findings. The

example is used of Ms Phophi Mphephu, who, as Makhadzi, served as acting paramount chief for a long period of time.

The second issue on which clarity was required, was whether a child born before his or her parent became king or queen could be recognised as a successor. In the Vhavenda succession case, the argument was that Masindi had been born before her father, Dimbanyika, became king.

The two houses explained that the Vhavenda customary law was basically the same as that of most communities.

The only requirement was that the successor must be born from a Dzekiso wife. In the case of Masindi, her mother, Fhulufhelo, was accepted to be the official Dzekiso wife and she was married to Dimbanyika according to all the required customs.

Toni can be king, say Royal Family (From page 1) The last issue that the SCA regarded as crucial to the case was whether a Ndumi qualified as a successor to a position of traditional leadership. “The Ndumi is described as a male person appointed by the royal family as one of the assistants to the reigning King or Queen,” the report states. The two houses highlight that Toni was appointed as Ndumi to his late brother, Dimbanyika.

“His appointment as Ndumi automatically disqualifies him from succeeding in a position of traditional leadership,” the report reads.

The matter is now back with the Limpopo High Court for the merits to be adjudged.

The parties are now expected to peruse the documentation and decide on a way forward.

Spokesperson Ntsieni Ramabulana said on Wednesday that they questioned at least two of the findings of the LHTL and the NHTL. They agreed that the question of women’s being allowed in leadership positions was not an issue. In the Vhavenda culture, women have often filled senior leadership positions.

The issue about a Ndumi’s not being allowed to become a ruler would be contested, he said. The question of whether Masindi had been born from the correct Dzekiso wife would also be debated.

On the question of whether the differences between Toni

and his niece, Masindi, could be resolved out of court, Ramabulana answered that this was always a possibility.

He said that issues such as these did not belong in the courts and should be handled internally. “There is always an opportunity to reach consensus,” he said.

According to Mr Johann Hammann, attorney for Masindi, some time may elapse before a new successor for the Vhavenda is announced. The parties now have an opportunity to peruse the documentation and then a date needs to be found for a court hearing.

Even if the court makes a ruling, it may not be the end of the matter as the “losing” party may take it on appeal.

Crop farmer’s orchard set alight

By Silas Nduvheni A well-known crop farmer, Mr Ailwei Wilson Nemadzhilili, who farms at Malavuwe village near the Marshal Resort outside Thohoyandou, is devastated after his garden was set alight. Nemadzhilili grows cabbages, butternuts, peppers and tomatoes on a seven-hectare plot.

Nemadzhilili said he had received word that his garden had been set alight by unknown thugs, leaving his guard room gutted and the refrigerator, seedlings, pesticides, seven bags of cement and pipes completely destroyed. The incident happened on Thursday night, two weeks ago.

According to Nemadzhilili, he retired from his job as health inspector in 2010. He thus became dependent on farming, but he made the most of it, producing over 30 000 cabbages in his

He said he nearly fainted when he arrived at his farm to find that the generator he used for pumping water from the nearby Malavuwe River had been stolen. He estimated the damage at more than R35 000. Nemadzhilili said that the guard working in the orchard had been assaulted by the thugs. The field was then set alight.

Nemadzhilili suspects that the acts were committed by people who are jealous of the successes he had achieved. “Even when we are approaching the dry season with no rain, to me it was not a worrying factor as I used to pump water from the Malavuwe River,” he said. After the attack, everything changed.

“I am forced to retrench some of my workers in the garden as I am unable to pay them,” added Nemadzhilili.

R20 000 to help disabled young man

By Kaizer Nengovhela Peter Rabali, archbishop of the New African Apostolic Church, donated R20 000 to assist a disabled young man from the Matanda area.

Rabelani Siobo (13) of Raliphaswa stays with his parents in a rented house. When the NAAC church reached out to people living with disabilities a few months ago, Rabali was touched by the living conditions of the Siobo family.

“I think there are many people who can help. As our

church has branches, I urge them to help wherever it is needed. Many people have a lot of clothes that they do not use. It is advisable to give these clothes to needy people,” he said.

However, Rabali was quick to point out that he was not helping people because he was rich, but he said he thought it would be wise to help needy people when help was needed.

“I want to show to the disabled that we love and accept them in our houses and community,” he said. He urged parents of disabled persons to stop abusing

these people and to stop using them as sources of income.

He said that disability grants should be used in the way they were intended.

“We are confident that our donation will encourage other businesses to put more effort into community development.

The people on the ground need our assistance in terms of nation building and poverty alleviation,” he said.

Receiving the money on behalf of her son, Ms Mushoni Siobo said the money would be used to buy food and clothes for him.

Two toddlers abandoned while mother sits in jail

By Anton van Zyl In a shocking case of child abuse, two toddlers were left locked in a room for almost five days before social workers intervened and took them to a place of safety.

Several questions are being asked, however, as to why the children were abandoned in the first place and why the authorities took so long to respond.

The two toddlers, aged two and four, were spotted on Sunday where they were standing on a windowsill of one of the rooms at the back of Cloud’s End Hotel, just outside Louis Trichardt. A reporter, Bernard Chiguvare, noticed them when trying to investigate where the sounds of crying children were coming from. Bernard rents a room not far from the one where the children were found.

“I heard faint sounds of children crying the previous day, and I was wondering why the mother was not attending to them,” says Bernard. The next morning, he spotted the children and alerted the caretaker at the hotel. They gave some food and water to the toddlers through an open window.

“Every time the children heard footsteps around their room they started crying, anticipating that it was their mother,” tells Bernard. With the bits of information that the children could supply and what

Bernard knew, he could piece together what had happened.

Incidentally, Bernard was at the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court on Friday morning to follow up on some cases. While there, he noticed a group of sex workers appearing in Court B

The mother of the toddlers turned out to be one of the accused. “They were all informed that they either had to pay a R1 000 fine or spend one month in jail,” says Bernard.

The woman was apparently taken to prison without informing the court that she had two children waiting at home. She left her room at Cloud’s End on Thursday night, leaving a loaf of bread and some cold drinks for the toddlers. She was picked up by the police during the night and appeared in court the following morning.

On Monday morning, when no relative or friend of the mother had arrived, the management at Cloud’s End Hotel forced open the door of

the room to free the toddlers.

The room where the children were staying was in a disgusting condition. The bucket that the two toddlers was using as a toilet was full and the smell was almost unbearable.

The matter was reported to the police and the Department of Social Development. For the remainder of the day, the children were monitored and given food and something to drink.

On Tuesday, when still nothing had been done to take the children to a place of safety, more phone calls were made to the various authorities. Only late on Tuesday afternoon did social workers visit the hotel and collect the toddlers.

A representative of Sisonke, a movement trying to assist sex workers and protect their rights, spoke to Limpopo Mirror and said that they tried to educate women and explain what must be done when they had young children. “We encourage all our members not to act against the law as they risk being arrested. Sex work is just like any other form of work. A sex worker should have someone handy to look after her children when she is out working. In case you are arrested, the police should be aware that you have children at home who do not have anyone to look after them. They will advise you on what to do,” she said.

Two suspects killed in mob justice incidents in Mphephu Crime In two separate incidents of mob justice at Mphephu last Friday (8th), a suspected robber and a man suspected of raping a young girl were killed.

By Silas Nduvheni Thovhele Midiyavhathu Tshivhase described the late Chief Mugo wa shango Themeli as a good servant of the people who encouraged development in his community.

“I used to send him to represent the Tshivhase Tribal Authority at the Thulamela municipality’s Tihosi/Mahosi Forum and some development meetings. He was one of the trusted chiefs, who also worked as my aid and never misled me during meetings,” said Thovhele Tshivhase.

He was joined by several traditional leaders from the Ha-Tshivhase dynasty as well as councillors, mayors and even a member of the National Council of Provinces, Mr Tshitereke Matibe, at the funeral on Saturday.

Chief Mugo wa shango Themeli (76) died on Monday,

4 November, after a long illness and was buried in the sacred place (zwiendeulu) Ngwenani ya Themeli.

When reading his obituary, Pastor Dzialwa Muhali said the late Chief Themeli had been installed as traditional leader of Ngwenani ya Themeli village in 1997 after succeeding his late father, Chief William Themeli. During his tenure of 22 years, his village experienced improvements such as the tarring of the access road, electricity and the installation of tap water.

The chairperson of the Congress of Traditional leaders (Contralesa) in the Vhembe region, Prince Mathebula, said that they had lost a giant leader who used to advise them.

Mr Patrick Muravha, representing the village’s civic organisation, said that they were saddened by the

passing away of their dedicated chief who had strived for bringing development in his village and the surrounding communities.

Chief Themeli left behind three wives and eight children.

According to a police report, the first incident was reported at about 08:00 after the body of man was found at Tshituni tsha Fhasi village near the Nwambedi River. “When the police arrived at the scene, they found the charred remains of a 27-year-old man, identified as Elikana Makondelele from this village,” the statement reads.

The body had open wounds and the man’s legs had been tied together with an electric wire. “The motive behind the killing is unknown at this stage,

but police investigations are ongoing.”

Later that evening, at about 18:00, community members of Raliphaswa Tshikhwani village allegedly stoned and set alight a man they suspected of raping a minor girl.

The police were called out to the village to investigate an attempted rape incident of a six-year-old girl. While they were busy with their investigations, they received a complaint of mob justice and responded immediately. “When they arrived at the scene, the person was already dead and community members had left the scene. Various objects like stones and bricks were left next to the body. The deceased has been identified as Lutendo Raswiswi, aged 35, from Matanda Village,” reads the police report.

In both incidents the police have opened cases of murder, but no arrests have been made.

Anyone who can provide information about the perpetrators should contact Lieutenant Colonel Emmanuel Mphephu on 082 565 7729, the Crime Stop number 0860010111or the nearest police station.

The provincial commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba, condemned the killings and urged all members of the community to report any criminal activity to the police and refrain from resorting to acts of vigilantism.

General Ledwaba further instructed that the perpetrators of these barbaric acts should be hunted down and brought to book.

Phylis Honwani (44) is missing

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho The police in Waterval launched a search operation for a missing person.

This comes after the 44-year-old Ms Phylis Honwani, a resident of Bungeni Mabondlongweni village, had left her home for Elim on 6 November. According to the police’s information, Honwani had not returned home since the day she had gone to Elim.

The family had attempted to locate her but without any luck. The search was extended to her relatives and neighbouring villages. Her cell phone has reportedly been off ever since she went missing. Meanwhile, nobody knows the type of clothes she was wearing at the time of her disappearance.

The police are calling on members of the public who may have any information that can assist in the locating of Honwani to contact W/O Rambau on 079 894 5467 or the crime stop number (08600 10111) or the Waterval Police Station at 015 556 8000.

Vho-Gole Mphaphuli said investors were flocking to Vhembe because of the efforts performed by men like Magwabeni who had never taken a break in the economic development of the country. “We are proud of these entrepreneurs because they place our Vhembe District on the world map.”

Mphaphuli said that Magwabeni was a prime example that, with hard work, everything was possible. “His humble beginnings are an inspiration to the disadvantaged communities, because he successfully displayed that it is possible to achieve success although he comes from a very poor background.” He encouraged businesspeople to plough back into their communities and assist in the development of the rural areas.

“A man becomes a product of his thoughts,” remarked Dr Elijah Maswanganyi, who said that it was an honour that God had given people a gift in the form of Magwabeni. He praised Magwabeni for his loving and caring spirit and the manner in which he gave to the needy.

Maswanganyi said Magwabeni was doing a good job that was worth emulating. “The job you are doing for our people cannot just go unnoticed. If there were many businesspeople doing what you are doing for the community, this country would be a better place to live in,” he said.

The chairperson of the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), Mr Sifiso Mtsweni, said he was proud of what Magwabeni did for the community and of his success in business.

The Miss Sinthumule-Kutama beauty pageant took place last month at the PNS Lodge in Madombidzha, where Jessica Tshikhuthula was crowned as the new queen.

Phindulo Mpilo and Denga Muremela were announced as the first and second princess respectively. Ndaedzo Matodzi won the Miss Personality title, whereas Miss Popularity went to Dimpho Chiloane. Wanga Sikhwari was dressed the best.

Tshikhuthula said that she felt very honoured to be crowned the queen. “I’m very happy and proud of myself. I still can’t believe that I’ve won. Although the competition was tough, I’m happy that I managed to impress the judges. I had to pull up my socks and do my best. I thank God for giving me this opportunity and confidence to win,” Tshikhuthula said.

Tshikhuthula, who is studying for a Bachelor of Education degree at the University of Venda, said that modelling had always been what she wanted to do. “I want to be a person who inspires others to do their best. This was my first title and I want to win Miss Univen next year,” Tshikhuthula said.

The founder of the pageant, Molatelo Chrysilias Machaba, said that the pageant aimed to empower young people to realize their potential and build their confidence through professional opportunities. “We want a society of young, dynamic intellectuals who are free and open to take charge of their lives and communities,” Machaba said.

Ndou was acting in the position since November last year (2018), after the former municipal manager, Reuben Rambado, was forced to resign. Her official assumption of duty is with effect from 1 December 2019.

She said one of the first things that needed to be done was the establishment of a rapid response team to deal with the water challenges affecting the communities.

“We want to ensure that there is good working relationship between all community-based organisations, including the traditional leaders, to enhance the fast-tracking of services delivery. We will also create a sound relationship between employees and the management,” she

said, but warned that consequences would follow transgression.

Ndou, who holds a masters’ degree in public management from the University of Venda, was previously the director of corporate services in Makhado local municipality. She served as senior manager: community services in the Thulamela Municipality and then became general manager: corporate services in the Vhembe District Municipality.

The executive mayor of the Vhembe District Municipality, Cllr Dowelani Nenguda, welcomed the appointment of the new municipal manager who will work as the accounting officer of the district. “We have confidence in her experience in municipal work,” he said. He mentioned that she had acted in the position for almost a year and he expressed the hope the municipality would get a clean audit, based on her ability. “We are the district municipality, which does not discriminate against anybody or gender, hence she is a woman and can do better if given a chance,” said Nenguda.

Long-distance truck drivers “dump” refugees in SA

Sakina.

After a couple of days on the road, Sakina started to have her doubts about whether the saviour was really such a kind and gentle man. “I started to become suspicious when almost a week went by and we had not reached the promised place of safety. On the way I had no choice but to succumb to whatever he asked from me. I feared for my life. The driver sexually abused me daily right in the face of my children,” says Sakina.

For Sakina it was like running from one problem to another, more serious, one.

“For two weeks I did not know where we were going. Early on a chilly morning in mid-July the driver stopped near the office of the Musina Refugee Centre. The driver informed us that we were in South Africa and we needed to find our own way. I could not say any word because the driver was now rude. I grabbed my children and a small bag that contained some clothing and dragged myself to the refugee centre,” says Sakina.

More than four months later, Sakina is still staying at the refugee centre in Musina.

She is worried about her parents back in the DRC, not knowing whether they are still alive.

The 23-year-old Chance Riziki had a similar story to tell. She is still confused as to how exactly she ended up in South Africa.

She also was a victim of the long-distance truck drivers who promised to take her to a place of safety and find work.

In the DRC she was living with her parents, but then both parents were killed in the conflict that broke out. She fled and walked for a week to a place where she met a long-distance truck driver who promised her work at a nearby place, not far from the DRC. “I never suspected that the driver was taking me to South Africa. On the way here he would abuse me. For fear of being dropped off in the midst of nowhere, I had to agree to whatever he demanded from me. I did not know that we crossed several borders before we arrived in Musina, South Africa,” says Riziki.

How the truck drivers manage to cross international borders without the passengers’ being detected is unclear. The passengers are often hidden in compartments in the cabin or at the back of the trucks.

The two women successfully applied for temporary asylum papers. They are currently staying at a women’s shelter in Musina.

Both are unemployed.

“We get one meal per day. It’s not enough. We are always looking for any form of employment, but because we cannot speak the local language or English, people do not want to employ us,” they said.



With these words two refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) were introduced to the continent’s most southern country. Little did they know a few weeks earlier that their arduous journey away from their war-torn country would end up in South Africa. Both became victims of what can only be described as human trafficking by long-distance truckers.

Regina Sakina and Chance Riziki, both from South Kivu Province in the DRC, fled after renewed attacks broke out in the province in June this year.

“When war broke out in the

province I had to flee from home. I managed to grab my two children, aged five and two, and we walked for almost two weeks,” tells the 22-year-old Sakina.

While fleeing, she received very little assistance from anyone, and they were depending on the bits of food that people left behind when passing them on the road to Burundi. “We ate the green leaves of trees we were familiar with until we reached Burundi,” she says.

At a truck stop in Burundi she met a long-distance truck driver, whom she remembered from the church back at home.

She explained her dire situation to him. “He promised to take me to a place of safety and find me some form of employment,” says

Meet our student presenter Afulufhedzeaho Afulufhedzeaho Pedro Nyamuvhuya Ratshibvumo is a co-host of the strictly Tshivenda Hip-Hop show called Venrap Solution. The show starts early (midnight) and continues until 03:00 every Saturday morning. Ratshibvumo hosts the show alongside Glamour Boy and Omphu.

Afulufhedzeaho said while he was growing up in a small village of Tshavhalovhedzi he was told that as a man “I need to stay positive and believe in myself, because it always seems impossible until it’s done”.

“I lived at a house where they played radio almost the whole day and this helped develop a love of radio and my presenting skills,” he said. “Each and every morning my mom would switch on the radio and we would all listen to it while she was preparing for work and I would also be preparing for school.” Afulufhedzeaho is a big fan of Thikho Liphadzi, a radio presenter at the SABC’s Phalaphala FM station. “When I went to Nzhelele FM, I was 16 years old and I

remember when the station manager told me: ‘You are very young, but I see potential in you’.

From that day on I had to work twice as hard, so that I did not disappoint him.”

The highly anticipated latest album from the Queen of Afropop, Ndivhudzannyi “Makhadzi” Ralivhona, was finally released both in soft copy in online stores and in hard copy, available at most popular music stores countrywide.

The album is aptly entitled Matorokisi, considering that the single was first issued two months ago as a result of international popularity. The album boasts 12 tracks, which are an intro (Huwa), Mapholisa, Tshelede iya hana, Tshikwama, Riya Venda, Matorokisi, Madabadaba, Ahuna, Munna, Limpopo ndi kule, Graveleni, and Mphemphe. It also contains four bonus tracks, which are Luvhilo, Muthu asali, Tshitetimennde, and Mufumakadzi.

“Matorokisi signals a new era for me,” Makhadzi said. “I am taking my music to the world. I have worked with Maxy Khoisan (Botswana), Master KG (SA), Sir McKleker (SA), DJ Call me (SA), and DJ Tira (SA), so the album is filled with versatility.”

Matorokisi caters for all age groups and is a diverse package of songs sung in at least six South African languages. “I feel this album will pave the way for me in the international market,” she said. “I wish people continue

to purchase either online or hard copies, so that we reach platinum.”

The manager at Rita Dee Entertainment, Rita Dee, said that it had taken them two years to finish this latest project. “We are very excited about the Matorokisi album,” she said. “We want the world to know Makhadzi and by so doing we will be opening the doors for all Limpopo artists.”

The title song, Matorokisi, has kept the world in sync as many people engage in the dance style that became popular with the song. Matorokisi simply means train carriages and, in order to enjoy the song, people line up and hold onto one another's waists and dance like train carriages in motion. This dance style, and the song, has taken the world by storm, where people in Asia, USA and Europe join in the matorokisi dance style and post such video clips on social media.

Xongi Rhangani proved that she is not a one-hit wonder with the release of more albums just after her first full-length album, which was entitled Nyonga ya Mali.

Xongi, who entered the music industry as a solo artist in 2017, had started as a backing vocalist for numerous singers and musicians and only recorded and released her solo project after being encouraged by her husband, Prince Rhangani.

“Nyonga ya Mali did very well in the market and I had to keep on pressing forward since there was no looking back. So, I recorded and released another album last year, which was entitled Vafelakazi.”

Vafelakazi was an instant success in the market. Xongi was seen as the new princess of Xitsonga music who had brought a breath of fresh air to the industry. Her music was being played everywhere – in homes, at taxi ranks, and on street corners.

“I had gained the kind of popularity that amazes me, but I know it is all because of the talent that God had invested in me,” she said.

Lutendo Tshisikule’s programme, Gondovhula Sunday Morning Gospel Show on Phalaphala FM, is extremely popular and comprises popular local gospel music, advice and religious counselling.

The Gondovhugala show starts at 07:00 and continues until 10:00 on Sundays. The producer of the shows is veteran presenter Mpho “Jantiby” Nefale.

Tshisikule connects with those who have lost loved ones and talks to experts on issues that affect both genders. She also invites different pastors to her programme to preach the Word of God. Even children are taught in an easy-to-understand way about Christianity.

Tshisikule explains that she was taught to believe in her dreams and herself. Being an introvert, she was naturally drawn to creative writing to express her thoughts and perspectives, rather than expressing them openly.

Radio presented a wider platform for her to express her ideas and it also gave her the opportunity to interact with big shots in the global Christian community.

“What I like about the show is that it is friendly, and we interact with listeners.” Her appetite for information, taste for good gospel music, love for her listeners and zeal to tell it the way it is, place this announcer among the best. “I am that kind of person who is positive about every aspect of life. There are many things I like to do, to see, and to experience.”

She added that one important thing she had learnt in radio journalism “is that you must always be prepared to learn a thing or two in your interaction with the public”. This is also true of her character as she is an informer, entertainer and educator, but most of all the voice that accompanies listeners.

Tshisikule ascribes her success to hard work and a continuous striving for the best in a career that demands more discipline and determination. She said that she would continue to do her job and motivate young people. Her listeners are very important to her and she will always appreciate their continued support. “I need more skills to improve my work environment and I want to tell the youth that it is important to get an education first, so that you can make a significant contribution to your community.”

She urged young people to refrain from all acts of criminality and focus on schoolwork.

“It is important for elders and teachers to tell the children about the dangers of involving themselves in crime,” she said.

Swiss man seriously injured after “speeding” taxi hits giraffe

By Bernard Chiguvare A lot has been said about the new Special Economic Zones (SEZ) for South Africa, with promises of job creation and turning these zones into the country’s new economic hubs. But not everybody is so excited about these zones.

These zones were given a very definite ‘NO’ by the MACUA (Mining Affected Communities United in Action) and SOLVE (Save Our Limpopo Valley Environment) initiatives. This was their clear message to the government when the two organisations held a conference at the Mountain Inn Hotel outside Louis Trichardt two weeks ago to announce that they would be taking legal action to stop any efforts to advance the zone in the Limpopo Valley.

The groups’ target is the proposed Musina-Makhado SEZ at Mopane, north of the Soutpansberg. Among the special guests who attended was Professor Lisa Thompson from the African Centre for Citizenship and Democracy (ACCEDE) at the University of the Western Cape.

MACUA was established in

2012 with the aim of raising the voice of communities who had not been consulted in the processes of allocating mining licenses, development and distribution of mining wealth, but who bear the brunt of the social, economic and environmental degradation as a result of the negative impact of mining. SOLVE was established in 2010 with the aim of stopping the establishment of coal mines and the Chinese-sponsored SEZ in the Limpopo Valley.

Earlier media reports indicated that the proposed Musina-Makhado SEZ would bring a total investment of around R150 billion and was expected to create over 21 000 jobs. The SEZ is to be located on existing farmland.

According to Mr Wally Schultz, a founder member of SOLVE, the area supplies fresh produce to Johannesburg and the surrounding areas. “If we allow these industries into the Limpopo Valley, productive farming and the growing tourism industry will be destroyed. That means the loss of thousands of jobs that support extended families throughout the valley. Mining and the SEZ, by comparison, offer only menial jobs, if any

at all. The Chinese bring their own workers from home and mines use experienced workers from Mozambique and Johannesburg,” said Schultz.

He added that companies involved in the SEZ would plunder all the natural resources and leave behind an industrial wasteland and displaced local communities.

According to Schultz, coal mines have a short lifespan, while farming is forever. “If we allow mining and the SEZ, they will deplete our coal and water reserves and then pack up and go back home to China and Australia,” he said.

Meshack Mbangula, MACUA’s national coordinator, echoed Schultz’s sentiments.

Mbangula said communities in the SEZ area had not been consulted and they knew nothing about the SEZ. The fact of the matter is that the Vhembe District was already struggling with water shortages and, according to Mbangula, the establishment of the SEZ would exacerbate the problem. Mbangula said that climate change is real, and the use of fossil fuels should not be encouraged. He urged the government to engage communities and find out what they wanted.

With the Kruger National Park literally on their doorstep, many residents of the Soutpansberg enjoy visiting the park for some relaxation.

The last thing one would expect is to come upon an accident scene that has left a tourist seriously injured and a giraffe killed on impact.

This is exactly what happened to Louis Trichardt resident Mr Leon Klaff. Whilst enjoying the peace and tranquillity of the park, he was one of many visitors to the park to come across a serious vehicle accident on the road between the Shingwedzi and Mopani Rest Camp just minutes after it happened on Sunday morning.

According to SANParks, a minibus-taxi with 13 day visitors collided with a giraffe that stepped into the road in front of the minibus. The driver of the minibus slammed on the breaks, but still managed to hit the giraffe. The giraffe became airborne and fell on top of a rental safari vehicle travelling in the opposite direction. The driver of the rental vehicle, a Swiss national, was seriously injured while his wife suffered minor injuries. The Speaker of the Limpopo Legislature, Mavhungu Luruli Ramakhanya, said that Malete had been a soldier for the best part of his adult life. “He epitomised the best that came from the movement. He was one of those men who fought for development in the prime of his life and excelled at everything he did,” she said.

A family representative, Geoffrey Tshibvumo, told the mourners that the family had accepted the loss although it was difficult to cope with it. “We understand and accept that Malete is gone, but it will be very

difficult for us to live without him.

It is also important to acknowledge the community’s support since we received the bad news,” he said.

He said when the history of the struggle for the freedom and emancipation of the people of South Africa was finally written, the name of Malete would be mentioned.

Youths get fed up looking for employment and start their own businesses

By Maanda Bele When Khodani Nyelisani (25), a BSc Biokinetics graduate from the University of Venda, became tired of looking for employment, she decided to start her own business and she became one of many new, young employers.

Nyelisani, who is from Thohoyandou Muledane (block J), now owns a laundry and beauty business.

“I graduated in May 2017 from the University of Venda. She started her business of selling beauty products, jewellery and accessories in April 2018 after she was struggling to find money to pay her tuition fee.

“I was studying towards my marketing management diploma when I ran out of funds. I tried applying for jobs, so that I could study while working, but I struggled to find a job. I decided to join Avon (a multi-level marketing company in beauty, household, and personal care categories), so that I could make the money to pay for my fees,” she explained.

Rofhiwa Siobo Manenzhe (32) from Tshavhalovhedzi owns a fast-food restaurant next to the Siloam taxi rank and he has managed to employ one person. “After sending my CV to different companies for years, I got tired and decided to create my own employment, because I had a wife and kids who needed me financially,” he said. By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho A lady from Louis Trichardt’s Old Town is distraught after her three dogs went missing last Thursday.

Ms Mpho Netty Sebola stays near the Zoutpansberg Private Hospital. At around 16:00, she left home to do some shopping and when she returned, she found that two of her three dogs, Zuri and Mufasa, were not at home.

“I started searching around the yard and I didn’t find them,” she said. “I thought that they might have escaped through the hole in the fencing that leads to my neighbour’s yard. When I couldn’t find them, I got more worried. I even inquired with my neighbour, who responded that they had not seen them. I went out to search for them in the streets, without any success. So, I went to sleep with a broken heart.”

The next day she went to report the matter to the police, who returned home with her and started assisting her in the search, but to no avail.

As if that was not enough, the third dog, Daisy, vanished on Friday night and this added salt to Sebola’s wound.

“This worsened my frustration and pain,” she said. “I don’t know where my pets are. I am worried if they are well fed wherever they are, and if they are not subjected to any kind of abuse. I cared for them; I loved them. I need my dogs to reunite with me.”

Limpopo police’s provincial spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe, said that three-card games were illegal and advised people to report such cases quickly to the authorities.

Home match for embattled TRON

They will entertain The Dolphins FC at the same venue tomorrow afternoon.

Although they will be enjoying the home-ground advantage, collecting the maximum points will be like the proverbial camel going through the eye of a needle for TRON. The Dolphins are currently leading the pack with 18 points accumulated from nine matches. They lost only one of the nine matches they have played to date. The Dolphins are still fresh from a 1-0 victory over Eleven Fast Tigers.

On the other hand, TRON are lying in the third position from the bottom of the log.

They have seven points in their

league account after winning two of the nine matches they have played to date.

By Frank Mavhungu Although Black Leopards had managed to collect the maximum points in their Absa Premiership League match against Cape Town City at the Thohoyandou Stadium last Sunday, the team’s head coach, Mr Luc Eymael, feels that they could have done better than a 2-1 victory.

During an interview with Limpopo Mirror after the game, the Belgian mentor said that he was consoling himself with the fact that they had won the match, although

much still had to be done. He further indicated that they could have scored at least three goals in the first half. According to him, the team’s killer striker, Mwape Musonda, could have scored two goals in the first 20 minutes of the game. He was not blaming the player for not converting the clear chances he had, saying it was just not his day.
