No acting king for Vhavenda
Palace staff without pay as leadership dispute makes its way to High Court
By Anton van Zyl and Elmon Tshikhudo
The Vhavenda royal palace will have to prepare for a bleak festive season. Earlier this week, the High Court dismissed an application to force the provincial government to appoint an interim ruler. This effectively means that the staff members working at the royal household will go without salaries for many more months, while the succession battle plays out in the courts.
To add insult to injury, the companies appointed by the Department of Co-operative Government, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta) to deliver services to the royal house are seemingly not affected by this void in leadership. In December last year, Coghsta appointed a company, Vhunene Construc-
tion and Projects, to provide security services to the former Vhavenda ruler, Toni Mphephu Ramabulana. The tender amount was just over R5,7 million and specified that Ramabulana was to be protected at his two households, one in Louis Trichardt and one at the official palace in Dzanani.
Last month, the spokesperson of the MEC for Coghsta, Mr Hitekani Magwedzi, was asked about the security contract and also who was to be protected, seeing that Toni Mphephu Ramabulana’s appointment as king had been declared unconstitutional. “The security appointed is now providing security service to another traditional council at a level of the Kingship,” he responded. When he was questioned as to exactly who was to be protected now and whether the contract had been amended, Magwedzi was
very evasive and provided no detail. “It is as per the advertised tender,” he responded.
To act or not to act?
The Mphephu Ramabulana Royal Family opted to approach the Thohoyandou division of the Limpopo High Court in October to force the Premier and the MEC for Coghsta to appoint an interim ruler. Since the Constitutional Court’s ruling in 2021 that Toni Mphephu could not serve as acting king, a void in the leadership existed. In the beginning of this year, Coghsta also stopped payments to staff members at the royal palace.
The matter served before Judge AML Phatudi at the end of November.

Former boyfriend sought on murder and arson charges
By Elmon Tshikhudo
The police are searching for a 29-year-old man who might be linked to a case of arson and murder after a house in Plange Mtiti village outside Malamulele was set on fire in the early hours of Sunday, 11 December.
Two women and their children were still inside the house, sleeping, when it was set alight and a threeyear-old child died in the fire. The former boyfriend of one of the women is suspected of starting the fire.
According to Limpopo police spokesperson Col Malesela Ledwaba, the woman (23) was at home with her two children (aged two months and two years respectively), and her cousin and her two children (aged six days and three years respectively) the previous day (Saturday) when her ex-boyfriend showed up at the house. A heated argument allegedly ensued between them before he left the house.
“The following morning, at about 01:00, an unknown suspect broke a window at the house, sprinkled a flammable liquid substance, believed to be petrol, through the window and set the house alight. The suspect then fled the scene. The
victims screamed for help, and they were eventually rescued by community members,” Ledwaba said.
Ledwaba said a case of arson and six cases of attempted murder had initially been opened, but one was changed to murder after the threeyear-old child had succumbed to her injuries. He said the motive for the incident was not readily known but that domestic violence could not be ruled out.
Community leader Mr Phineas Bilankulu said the community was still in shock. “What we gathered is that the woman did not want the man anymore. This is sad. Just imagine the cruelty of it; a man wanting to burn his loved ones in a house. As I speak, I am at the chief’s palace and he is very devastated that a life was lost unnecessarily,” he said.
The police are calling upon Mr Edward Chauke (29) of Gumbani to avail himself at the Malamulele Police Station or contact the nearest police station as he is believed to be able to help with the investigation.
Anyone with information about the incident should contact Col Edson Rikhotso on 082 565 7919, the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111, their nearest police station or use the MySAPSApp.
Body of woman found on banks of Mudaswali River
By Victor Mukwevho
The body of a 38-year-old woman who disappeared on 3 December this year was found on the banks of the Mudaswali River late on Tuesday afternoon (13 December).
Livhuwani Rananga was allegedly last seen with one of her relatives while drinking traditional beer at the village. According to one of the family members who spoke on condition of anonymity, the family reported her disappearance to the local headman, the local civic association and opened a missing person’s case at the local police station. Community members were summoned and started searching for her.
“Community members have been searching all over the village and in nearby bushes, but to no avail. We were very surprised when she was found at a place where we had
already searched. It is clear that the killer or killers dumped her body there,” the source said.
Meanwhile, Vhembe District’s acting communications spokesperson, sergeant Vuledzani Dathi, said the police had received information about the suspect and started tracing him.
“The police received a tip-off that he was consulting a local prophet for cleansing. They went there and arrested him at the prophet’s place. He confessed to killing the deceased and said he hit her with [his] fists until she fell down. When he realised that she was not breathing anymore, he took the body and hid it on the banks of the Mudaswali River. He later led the police to the scene, where they found her body in a decomposing state,” Dathi said.
He confirmed that the police had opened a murder case and the suspect would appear in court soon.
Businessman found dead at Elim complex
By Thembi Siaga
A local businessman was found dead at the Elim shopping complex early on Wednesday morning, 14 December. The deceased was identified as Mr Sam Miyeni (68), who owned a bottle store in Louis Trichardt.
According to police spokesperson Sgt Tshifhiwa Radzilani, the de-
ceased’s body was found by a resident at the shopping complex at around 05:00. The police were then informed about it.
“When the police arrived, the caller was not there at the scene. The body was found lying near the Post Office. There was with blood coming from his ears. Two of his cellphones were missing,” she said.
Radzilani said that the police had
opened an inquest docket and they were calling on anyone with information to contact the Waterval Police.
Residents are complaining about the high crime rate in and around Elim. “Crime is becoming a daily occurrence here. Shoppers are being robbed of their hard-earned money and groceries. We are planning to strike; maybe then our cries will be heard,” said one of the residents.
Grieving family expelled from Tshino Ndiitwani
By Elmon Tshikhudo
The incident where a three-yearold boy from Tshino Ndiitwani went missing and was later found dead in a pit latrine took a nasty turn when the community ordered the already grief-stricken family to vacate their home and leave the village.
This shocking decision was made during a community meeting held at the village on Wednesday, 7 December, following rumours that the family had in one way or another had something to do with his death.
The boy, Bonginkosi Modike, went missing under mysterious circumstances. His grandmother had gone to the local spaza shop and Bongi was left in the care of his uncle when he disappeared without a trace on 5 December this year.
The next day, a search party was sent out to look for Bongi in the bushes and around the house. His body was eventually found after community members had insisted on digging up the pit toilet in the family’s yard. The boy’s bottom lip was missing, which cast the suspicion that he might have been ritually murdered before his body
was dumped in the toilet.
One of the community leaders, Mr Gideon Mukhovha, confirmed that the family was expelled because the community suspected they (the family) knew something about Bongi’s death.
“People are angry, and they are convinced that the family is hiding information about the boy’s death. The community marched peacefully to the family’s home and ordered them to leave the area as they are no longer wanted in the village. As community leaders, we cannot be against the decisions taken by the community, but we urged them not to break property and to act within the law. We expect the family to abide by the request and leave the area,” he said.
Mukhovha said the community members were further agitated when they heard the family had laid charges against two community leaders.
“We marched to the Vuwani Magistrate’s Court on Monday, but we were happy to find that the community leaders were not charged after all,” Mukhovha said.
Attempts to hear the family’s side of the story resulted in nothing as they could not be reached.
A bleak Christmas waits for the royal palace’s staff
(Continues from page 1)
In the Heads of Argument, the royal family argue that the delay in appointing Mavhungu David Mphephu as acting king is unreasonable and untenable. His name was forwarded by the royal family as the ideal person who can serve in the position as leader while the battle in court plays out.
“The delay in recognising the Acting King of Vhavenda … until the finalisation of the High Court matter is affecting the proper functioning and integrity of the office of Kingship of Vhavenda,” the court papers read.
The royal family’s application was opposed by the Premier and the MEC, as well as by one of the main contenders for the leadership position, Masindi Clementine
Mphephu. In their replying affidavit, the Premier and MEC say that they cannot appoint an interim ruler as a dispute still existed between the royal family’s members.
Masindi Mphephu’s legal team raised similar objections, saying that the court first needed to rule on various matters before any leader could be identified.
No, you cannot appoint anyone
In his ruling that was made available on Tuesday, Judge Phatudi was clearly not convinced of the urgency (or semi-urgency) of the matter. The applicants argued that the matter is “semi-urgent” and the court papers referred to the fact that, among others, staff members
were not being paid. The judge pointed out that the rules of the court did not make provision for semi-urgent matters and as such should be dismissed.
Judge Phatudi, however, said that the application was flawed because it went against the clear instructions given by the Constitutional Court. “It is common cause that one of the issues for the determination under case number 773/2012 is the identification and recognition of a person as a Queen or King of [the] Vha-Venda community. It is clear that the Supreme Court of Appeal indicated that that should not be determined, not even in acting capacity, pending finalisation of the review application,” he said.
In a surprise twist, the judge made a cost order against the
Premier (first respondent) and the MEC (second respondent). “The first and second respondents failed, if not, it skipped their minds to inform the applicant of the caveat created by the Higher Courts, more especially, the Supreme Court of Appeal, that no one shall be recognised, even in an acting capacity, pending finalisation of the review application,” he said.
The spokesperson for the royal family, Ntsieni Ramabulana, said on Wednesday that they were very disappointed with the judgment.
“We are still studying the judgement, and we will sit with our lawyers. There is a strong possibility that we will take the matter on appeal, hoping that another judge would reach a different conclusion,” he said.

“He is not our leader,” say Tshiavha Royal Council
By Maanda Bele
The 50-year-old Lufuno Nthanyeleni Netshiavha was inducted as the new traditional leader of Tshiavha village on Saturday, but not everyone is happy with this development. The
Tshiavha Royal Council’s members are opposing this appointment and have now called upon Mailausumbwa Kennedy Tshivhase to explain why he had allowed the coronation to go ahead.
“We don’t recognise the new chief here in Tshiavha,” said Ms Magdalene Netshiavha, who described herself as the chairperson of the Tshiavha Royal Council. The Netshiavha family members pride themselves on being the custodians of the sacred Lake Fundudzi, located in Tshiavha village. In March last year, the village’s previous leader, Ntsandeni Samuel Netshiavha, passed away after battling a long sickness.
Ms Netshiavha said that the royal council had not chosen Lufuno Nthanyeleni as the rightful successor. “After we lost our chief, we went to Mukumbani (the Tshivhase royal council) to inform them that the chief had died, and he (Mailausumbwa Prince Kennedy) asked us to choose a successor,” she said.
The names forwarded as possible successors did not include Lufuno Nthanyeleni Netshiavha. Ms Netshiavha, who is the aunt of the late Chief Ntsandeni Samuel Netshiavha, said he did not qualify to be the new leader, for a number of reasons.
Seven accused in Total robbery make their first court appearance
The seven suspects arrested in connection with the daring night-time armed robbery at the Total filling station at the Capricorn Toll Plaza on 5 December, which included a senior member of the police’s Crime Intelligence Unit in Louis Trichardt, all made their first court appearance in Louis Trichardt this week.
A group of suspects entered the Bonjour shop on the premises at about 03:00 on that day and held the staff at gunpoint. They fled the scene thereafter with a drop safe containing an undisclosed amount of cash and cigarettes in a white Toyota bakkie and a Toyota Corolla Quest.
“The police were quick to respond to the incident and a well-coordinated and intelli-
gence-driven operation was conducted, which led to the arrest of the seven suspects at different locations [on Tuesday],” said provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo in a press release after the incident.
The first to be arrested was a female employee of the filling station at her workplace, the 39-year-old Nkhanedzeni Mungomeni. Further investigation implicated more suspects and a 52-year-old police warrant-officer attached to the police’s Crime Intelligence Unit in Louis Trichardt, Isaac Nemutshenzheni, was apprehended at his work place. The rest of the suspects were arrested at their homes in Shayandima in the Mphephu policing area. They were the 45-year-old Tshifhiwa Mushweu, 49-yearold Tshinanne Netshitakani,
32-year-old Rabelani Makushini, 40-year-old Nqabuko Moyo and 38-year-old Vhahangwele Manyoro.
During the arrest, the police recovered several items that were positively linked to the robbery, including a drop safe containing an undisclosed amount of money, packets of cigarettes of various brands, the Toyota Corolla, and the Toyota Hilux bakkie.
The seven suspects, who have been in custody since their arrest, all made their first court appearance on Monday this week in the court in Louis Trichardt on charges of business robbery and the possession of suspected stolen goods. The case was postponed until Tuesday, 13 December, and again to Thursday, 15 December, when the seven accused are expected to bring a bail application.
“Nthanyeleni is not the rightful heir. Yes, he is the eldest son of the dzekiso (candle) wife, but we chose another member of the family because he did not qualify,” she said. Apparently one of the reasons why he was disqualified was because some are disputing whether his father was Ntsandeni Samuel Netshiavha.
“There is no chief here in Tshiavha. You cannot coronate a chief when the family is not there. We don’t recognise him. The Tshivhase Royal council and Mailausumbwa Kennedy Tshivhase must call us and inform us as to why they chose a person that we didn’t submit as a rightful heir. We feel disrespected by the Tshivhase Royal Council,” she said.
Mr Rolani Ronald Masindi, who spoke on behalf of the family members who support Lufuno Nthanyeleni, said the coronation had gone on as planned, despite the disagreement between the two groups.
“We currently don’t have a royal council; we just have a group of people that call themselves a royal council and we don’t recognise them. The new chief will choose his royal council and other supporting structures soon. You have to under-
stand that there is a game that is being played by royals and it’s a game of u vhanga vhuhosi. Every chieftaincy has a way of doing things,” he said.
Masindi said that the people who were criticising them, saying that the proper procedures had not been followed, must go to the High Court to contest the coronation of the new leader.

“Izinyoka” beaten to death at Mpheni D2
By Thembi Siaga
A Zimbabwean man was beaten to death after he was allegedly caught stealing copper cables at Mpheni D2 (Vhutuwangadzebu) last Friday (9 December).
The unknown man was said to have been terrorising the community for some time, repeatedly stealing electrical cables that they were forced to replace out of their own pockets.
According to a source the newspaper spoke to, the man had been disciplined by other Zimbabwean nationals before for his stealing ways, but this time the community members had had enough.
The residents say they are caught in an endless struggle
to survive crime and poverty, which is exacerbated by cable theft.
Mr Johannes Mdumi, a leader representing the Zimbabwean nationals living in Mpheni, said the deceased had been severely disciplined by community members for assaulting a lady last Monday (5 December). “He was hospitalised and discharged himself, but then he was caught again stealing copper cables on Friday. We’ve been trying to rebuke him to stop stealing, but in vain,” he said.
One of the residents, who requested anonymity, said they had been alerted by a Vimba (catch the thief) call coming from the home where the suspect was caught stealing a second cable. “He
was known for stealing cables around our area, and we finally caught him stuffing cables into his bag at around 04:00. We chased him, captured him, and beat him,” he said.
The police confirmed the incident. Police spokesperson W/O Foster Rambau said the deceased had been assaulted all over his body with rocks and wooden sticks and left for death. On arrival, the police officers called for medical assistance, who certified the man dead at the scene.
“He was transported to the Elim mortuary, where an autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. A case of murder was opened, and an investigation is underway,” Rambau said.
Mananda Godzwana, chairperson of the Mulweli Traditional Council, said 14 copper cables had been stolen in one night a few months ago. “Eskom can spend up to three months without restoring the stolen cables, and the very persons who stole them re-sell them back to the residents, who are left with no other choice but to buy them,” he explained.
Despite the urgency of the cable-theft problem, Godzwana encouraged community members to avoid implementing their own laws. “We do not condone the loss of life because every life is valuable. We strive to deter community members from taking the law into their own hands,” he said.
Rural women get empowered by business skills training courses
By Kaizer Nengovhela
A group comprising 25 women from different rural villages around the Makhado Municipality participated in a business-skills training course, presented by the Faranani Rural Women’s Initiative Programme, in partnership with the Business Skills for South Africa Foundation. The women all received certificates during a graduation ceremony held at the Makhado Municipality’s chambers on 1 December.
chief executive officer of Price Waterhouse Coopers (PWC), Ms Shirley Macha-
ba, said the purpose of the programme was to train female micro-entrepreneurs in, among others, entrepreneurship readiness, financial management, generating their business ideas, creating more jobs and subsequently generating a more secure income.
According to Machaba, they had already helped more than 2 000 women over the past few years who now ran their own active businesses around all nine provinces. They still provide support and post-training programmes for these beneficiaries. “We will further help them to develop their business plans and start their own businesses in the
next training session. We are happy that this programme is making a positive impact on so many women who had previously been unemployed,” Machaba said.
Cllr Nthabiseng Mahosi from the Makhado Municipality urged the graduates not to stop studying but to enrol for further courses. “There is a big skills shortage in South Africa, and you have done right by working hard to obtain your qualifications. It will stand you in good stead when competing for positions in the job market. The skills you have acquired now provide a good foundation for you to start your own business,” he said.

Former prosecutor to spend six years in jail
By Silas Nduvheni
prose-
Ratshilumela Makhado (50) was convicted and sentenced to six years in prison by the Giyani Specialised Commercial Crime Court on Wednesday, 7 December, after he pleaded guilty to charges of corruption.
Makhado was arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team in Limpopo during an undercover operation in May of 2020, after he was accused of receiving a bribe of R6 000 to squash a case of reckless and negligent driving against a minor. He and his co-accused, Mbofholowo Freedom Tshikovhele, then allegedly tried to burn down the house of a key witness in another case in which Makhado is accused of corruption and defeating the ends of justice.
In aggravation of the sentence, the state advocate, Evans Lebese, submitted that the country’s economy was bleeding from corrupt activities, and that corruption damaged employees’ morale and organisational reputation and undermined the rule of law. He said the accused had been expected to uphold the rule of the law, but instead acted to the contrary. Lebese argued that Makhado and others who practice this misconduct should be deterred from committing similar offences. The state recommended eight years of direct imprisonment in terms of section 26 (1) a (i) of the prevention and combating of Corruption Activities Act 12 of 2004.

Adv Makonde Mathivha is no more
By Kaizer Nengovhela
News of the death of the deputy chairperson of the ANC in Vhembe, Adv Makonde Mathivha, came as a great shock to many local residents.
Mathivha (61), who was also a former manager of the Thulamela Municipality, died at the Milpark Hospital on 8 December after a long illness.
His daughter, Adv Fhatuwani Mathivha, said that her father’s untimely death had not only shaken the ANC and her family, but many other people locally and beyond the province.
“We have received many messages of condolences, and as a bereaved family it shows us that my father was loved and respected. He was accommodating to everyone, irrespective of colour, race or religion. We wipe our tears because we know that he served the Lord every minute of his life. God has done his will and ours is to accept it,” she said.
Premier Stan Mathabatha said that he was deeply saddened by Mathivha’s death. “It is still hard to believe that he is not with us anymore. The family’s grief also touches us. Mathivha was a good man who helped everyone, despite the circumstances. For so many years he served selflessly and faithfully in the ANC and community structures, and in those dark days he made himself available day and night to all who needed him. We will always remember him for his hard work, commitment and dedication. Most of the developments that occurred during [his time as] the Thulamela municipal manager, were his ideas. He understood that, as a leader, one must transcend all boundaries and represent the hopes, interests and aspirations of all people to realise a better life,” Mathabatha said.
Vhembe ANC chairperson Mr Tshitereke Matibe also expressed his shock over Mathivha’s death. “Mathivha was one of our comrades who understood
the way in which the organisation functioned and contributed to shaping the local-government system. He was a selfless visionary and dedicated leader to all. Mathivha was a champion of social and economic transformation in South Africa. He had vast experience and people learned a lot from him. His death is a loss to both the family and
the community. He will be remembered for his hard work, commitment and dedication. Our heartfelt condolences and support to the Mathivha family,” said Matibe
Mathivha was buried at the Mapate cemetery on Wednesday, 14 December.

On 1 November this year, Netshiunda was promoted to colonel. He will be serving as KwaZulu-Natal’s provincial section commander responsible for media relations.
Limpopo Mirror caught up with him last week and asked him how he felt about his promotion. Netshiunda said that his elevation to middle-management level in the SAPS was because of many long hours of hard work and dedication. “Media liaison is a 24-hour job. You need to understand that people deserve to know the truth
and that journalists have tight deadlines. It takes a willing heart and passion to field hundreds of media interviews a day, give all media practitioners equal attention, respect and the highest level of professionalism,” he said.
But Netshiunda’s whole life does not revolve around law enforcement. Aside from his tight work schedule, he is also a league-winning soccer coach and multiaward-winning music manager.
He is living proof that ambition does get one far in life. He wants to send out a message of encouragement to the youth to believe in their dreams and be disciplined, so that they may achieve them.
“Do not let your background discourage you. If you put your mind to it, you can achieve it.
Perseverance, patience and passion will unlock all doors that are meant for you to enter,” he said.
Deputy Minister of Transport Sindisiwe Chikunga said she was worried about the large number of young people who died on the roads as a result of drunk driving. She addressed communities on Saturday, 10 December, during the department’s intensified Festive Season Road Safety campaign, which was held in Dzindi, on the R524-Dzindi road along the Punda Maria Road.
Chikunga was joined by the MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Florence Radzilani, Executive Mayor
She said she was especially concerned about young men. “Statistics show that many young people, especially boys who are employed and able to afford cars, get involved in accidents as they over-indulge in drinking alcohol and then take to the roads. Car accidents usually happen on Friday nights and in the early hours of Saturdays and Sundays as these young people party the whole night and then drive while they are intoxicated,” Chikunga said.
During the campaign, a roadblock
was held, where vehicles were stopped and searched by traffic officers. Several unroadworthy vehicles were taken off the road, while some drivers were fined.
Chikunga warned traffic officers against taking bribes from wrongdoing drivers, reminding them that those who made themselves guilty of this crime would be arrested, charged and possibly fired from their jobs.
She said most accidents were caused by drivers’ drinking and driving and fatigue. She advised drivers to park their vehicles and rest when they felt tired.
“We want people to arrive alive this festive season,” she said.
Much-loved granny Sidebi (103) laid to rest
By Kaizer Nengovhela
Much-loved granny Vho-Phophi Sidebi passed away at the ripe age of 103 years on 1 December. A well-attended celebratory funeral service was held for her at her home in Tshiozwi on 10 December.
Sidebi was remembered with great fondness. Speaker after speaker described the good things she had done for the community and her family in her lifetime. Vhamusanda Vho-Makhado Sinthumule said the people of Tshiozwi had lost a pillar of their community; someone who had always been there to give advice to the young blood.
“Life nowadays is very short, and people should ask themselves why people are no longer living longer lives. These days we are burying young people who are supposed to be the ones to bury the elderly, and this is a source of much concern. Let us follow in the footsteps of Granny Sidebi, and we will live our lives to the fullest. We send our sincere condolences to the family in this time of loss and remind them that, although
she might be gone, her good deeds will live with us forever,” Sinthumule said.
Her son, Mr Calvin Sidebi, said they were grateful for the support they had received from the community since their mother’s death. “The support and family visits have been overwhelming. For so many years, my mother served selflessly
and faithfully in parishes throughout the country, and in those dark days she made herself available day and night to all who needed her. Although we are grieving, we console ourselves by the fact that she had contributed immensely to bringing a better life for the people of Tshiozwi,” he said.

Development should not threaten people’s heritage
Environment
On Saturday, 10 December, on World Human Rights Day, Earthlife Africa Johannesburg, together with partner organisations, launched the Mulambwane Eco-Mapping Report. The report raises awareness about the importance of conserving and protecting our natural resources and nature, including heritage and sacred sites in response to the proposed Musina-Makhado Special Economic Zone (MMSEZ). The event also highlighted the threats to those who defend the environment, especially remembering those who have lost their lives, in the fight for environmental justice.
“We love our own environment and everything in it, which includes water, wild animals, land for settlement and the places where our forefathers used to live. We do not want money. The MMSEZ is supported by those who want money, even though it will destroy our environment. We have been promised employment, but in the end, community members will fight against each other,” says Khathutshelo Raluare, a member of the Mulambwane community and an eco-mapping participant.
The MMSEZ – which many view as a major ecocide threat – has been anticipated
since the early 2000s, when the local council announced plans to develop Musina from a village into a city. However, opposition to these plans has arisen because this area holds huge cultural significance for the local Venda people, and the affected section of the Vhembe Biosphere Reserve is home to diverse fauna and flora that can only be found in the Baobab Belt.
In the report, representative of the Mulambwane Community Tshiwela Tshihuwa explains the land-claim process of the Mulambwane Community, along with the impact the proposed development has already had. She says: “In 1998, we started the process of a land claim. In 2008 we got the land back and farms that were on our land were given back to us since the land claim became successful that the land belongs to us. Now a SEZ (Special Economic Zone) is planned to happen on our land. The land has been given to MMSEZ and other people, without transparency and consultation with us, even though traditional leaders and their structures do not
have the authority to make decisions on land-use on behalf of the entire affected community.”
According to Tshihuwa, who is also a member of the Mulambwane Women’s Organisation, “Eco-mapping is very important because it helps educate people about all the diverse flora and fauna – like the trees we use for our traditional medicine in Mulambwane – and the role it plays in our cultural traditions. If the MMSEZ comes here, it will pollute our dams and put our people at risk. We will be the ones who suffer.”
The report was written by the Mulambwane community, with the assistance of Dzomo La Mupo and material support from Earthlife Africa. Key to the opposition of the MMSEZ is the poor public-participation process, in addition to the threats to the environment, the land and water sources, including the threat to the culture and heritage of the Mulambwane Community.
She says: “We have many natural resources that should be protected in Mulambwane, like our rivers and mopane trees. MMSEZ coming here will destroy all of them. Our heritage, including the grave sites of our ancestors, our land and dams must be protected. We do not want MMSEZ because it will ruin things for us.” (Issued by Maria Welcome on behalf of Earthlife Africa Johannesburg)

The time of the year when the safety of communities becomes a sensitive matter, as criminals become more active, has arrived once again. To assist the police in curbing crime over this festive period, 20 young volunteers from different villages across the Makhado policing area have once again joined the annual Youth Against Crime initiative in conducting patrols with the SAPS. The youths have already started with their duties on Thursday, 8 December, and will be seen in Louis Trichardt town until 31 December. Lwaphungu Secondary School receives a life line from Grow SA
By Elmon Tshikhudo
The plight of learners at Lwaphungu Secondary School in the rural Tshiungani village of having to attend classes under the trees will hopefully soon be something of the past, thanks to Mr Justice Mphaphuli, founder of the Grow South Africa Foundation, and his partners, who have stepped in to turn the situation around at the school.
Mphaphuli and Ms Constance Nengwenani, who leads the team at MR21, an insurance company based at Tshikhudini, visited the school on a fact-finding mission on Thursday, 24 November. After assessing the situation and having a meeting with the SGB, local traditional leaders and the school management,
Mphaphuli and his partners decided to adopt the school and pledged to build eight new classrooms in two phases.
The chairperson of the SGB, Mr Nkhetheni Tshibalo, could not contain his excitement. “This problem has persisted for many years, and we have knocked on many business doors, but with no luck. Grow SA approached us and we warmly embrace their intention to work with us on improving the infrastructural conditions at our school,” he said.
Mphaphuli is no novice to development issues and is very passionate about education in particular. A few years ago, he founded Educomsa, an organisation that assists many needy tertiary students with registration fees and provides uniforms to learners.
He said that when he learned about Lwaphungu Secondary’s plight, he decided to intervene immediately. “It is not right that, after so many years of democracy, we still find learners attending classes under trees. The situation here is not conducive to learning and teaching, and after consultations with the school management, we decided to adopt the school. The adoption will not involve the dayto-day running of the school but will focus on infrastructural development. We are happy that they accepted our proposal and, bearing in mind that this needs our urgent attention, we hope to start with the first phase of four classrooms by the first term next year. With the help of our partners, we will change the face of this school,” he said.
“Men who abuse women have no place in this country” - UAAC
By Kaizer Nengovhela
Archbishop Sampson Miriri of the United African Apostolic Church (UAAC) warned men who abuse women and children that they had no place in this country if they continued with their ways.
Miriri was speaking during the UAAC Tshiozwi branch’s 32nd awards ceremony, in conjunction with the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children on Sunday, 27 November. He said that abuse impacted badly on women and children and that members of the community ought to rise up and fight all forms of violence.
“South Africa is still home to high levels of violence against women and children, despite a world-renowned constitution and a legislative overhaul that safeguards women and children’s rights,” Miriri said. “We will not harbour the abusers of women and children in our area. We are against all acts of crime and abuse. We call upon men to be protectors of their families and not the cause of families’ cries and worries.”
He said that churches and different organisations played a major role in the exploitation of women and children.
“Good moral values are keys in the fight against violence and
the abuse of both women and children. All of us are clearly sending out a message that women and children are worthy human beings who deserve to be valued and respected as equal members of society.”
Vhakoma Vho-Daniel Mavhandu said the time had clearly come that men refrained from abusing their women and children and started protecting them instead. “Gone are those days when women and children kept quiet while they were be-
ing abused,” he said and called upon all women who are being abused to report their abusers to the police.
Pastor Mulambilu Ramabulana and Mutshutshu Raphebele received awards for their loyalty to the UAAC, while Vhutshilo Nedzamba received an award for Best Soccer Player Developer from the rural area.
The late Archbishop Asera Mufhadi of the UAAC was awarded Best Church Leader during his time.
“You don’t need a big record label to be a top musician” - Leon Hlabathi
By Thembi Siaga
Emerging music producer, singer and songwriter Leon Hlabathi from Chavani village reckons that he does not need a record label to make it in the music industry. He believes that hard work and his expertise are enough.
Hlabathi says that, as an independent R&B and hip-hop artist, he can express himself freely without the dos and don’ts that a label imposes. The 20-year-old artist is quietly creating a reputation for himself with his unique rap style, which has already won him thousands of fans. He is confident that he is on his way to accomplishing all the goals he has set out for himself as a musician.
“The first step is independence. I want to do everything myself from start to finish and have the budget to promote both my music and myself and establish a social-media following. I also produce for other upcoming artists,” he said.
Leon matriculated at Marimane High School in 2017 and is now a third-year law student at the University of South Africa (Unisa). His infatuation with music started in his primary school days, when he and some of his friends started experimenting.
“A few years later, I delved into it more seriously and learned how to make my own beats and record and mix vocals. After that, I started working on one of my own songs, which was only average then, but I have greatly improved over the years and continue to create music that I am proud of today,” he says.
Leon says his latest single, dubbed Stand My Ground, featuring local artist Manotry, was received well by their respective fans, with lots of comments and interaction on social media about it. According to him, the song has already been streamed more than 10 000 times on Spotify
He has already released a number of singles on streaming platforms. His most popular songs include Better Me, Dominance, also
Molalathoko (35) worked at a retail shop in Musina for four years, but when the pandemic hit, she was retrenched, along with so many others at the time. Luckily for Molalathoko, she had some skills she could
fall back on. Even before being retrenched, she cooked food for customers on a part-time basis, and in many ways, this became her lifeline.
“I came to realise that my passion really was baking and cooking. Since I was very young, I used to cook for our family and friends, but I wanted to take it further. In 2018, I started preparing assorted dishes for customers on a parttime basis. So, when I lost my job, I decided to do this on a
full-time basis,” said Molalathoko.
Today, she runs an eatery in Nancefield, called LoveMreiks Kitchen, with her business partner, Lovemore Chauke. They not only cook meals for their daily customers, but also caters for functions. The business employs three people.
Molalathoko says that, although things have been very tough, she is glad that she did not give up and decided to push through with her own venture.

Lordy adds his voice against the abuse of women and children
Entertainment
To show his avid support for the fight against women and child abuse, prolific reggae star Lordy Muvhango released another single, titled Ibvani khazwo, last week. The song, which features well-known reggae poetry singer Rooijah and songbird Jininka, made its grand entrance when it was played for the first time on local community radio station Phalaphala FM’s Reggae Show last Saturday.
Born on 15 December 1992 at
Halambani Satani outside Thohoyandou, Muvhango’s musical talent became clear during his school years at Mmbofheni Primary and Ranndogwana High School, where he would entertain fellow students, teachers and guests at school events and gatherings. The Ha-Lambani area where he grew up was home to great late musicians such as Cyril Ndou, Jahman Chiganja and Thifhelimbilu Lovers Tshipenga. He also drew inspiration from artists such as Ntshenge Nthungeni, Tshifhiwa and the new sound vibration, the I khou Bobodana Band and
Tendani Mutendasi Nephawe, who still entertain today.
Muvhango shot into stardom with the release of his debut album, called Afrika Tshipembe, in 2015, followed by his second album, Vivho, earlier this year. On these two albums he worked with well-known artists such as Jahman Choppa Mawela, Humbulani Ramagwedzha, Natty King, The Lion Poet and Leminho. He had also shared the stage with the likes of King Don, Radical Dread, Raymond Mukwevho, Aweeh, Ras Hendoman, Jah Chili, Ras Mphathe, 2Kan RSA, Croco Mytval and Zion Rasta Shai.
felt I had to get this single song out there, and I am happy that it is doing so well in the market,” he said.
May you all have a wonderful Festive Season
This is the time of year when people from all over the country pack up for a while to visit old friends and relatives or take their families away on holiday. Phalaphala FM’s programme manager, Ms Sharon Ravele, made a call on everyone to be safe over this period.
“Limpopo is known as the Land of the Legends, the home of peace-loving people and warm hospitality. This is a time for happiness, but also a time to pray for each other’s safety.
Entertainment
The saying that dynamite comes in small packages certainly applied to poetry singer Takalani Emmanuel Nevhungoni, or Tshilombe tsha Vhurendi as he is known in the entertainment fraternity, when he first rose to stardom. Though he does not have a very distinctive image, Nevhungoni enjoys fame wherever he goes because of his unique talent in musical poetry. His third album, titled Matshilisano o ya ngafhi, was released earlier this month and already it promises to be yet another successful project by the singer. Nevhungoni was born at Maha, a small village near Thohoyandou, but moved to Ha-Khakhu Makuleni in 1998. Passionate about the Tshivenda tradition, he demonstrated his poetic talents while still attending Tshiavha Primary School, and soon learners and teachers alike were very impressed with what they saw.
Inspired by famous local musical poet Papa Thile, Nevhungoni released his debut album, Ri lwele Ramakole, in 2019, followed by his second album, Ri vhana vha Afrika, in 2020.
Through his latest eight-track album, he urges society to go back to its roots and re-build the cultural and traditional values that have become so neglected today. The album features fellow artists Rofhiwa Tshifhumulo, Tsireledzo Mathobo, Parks de Blessing, Vhuhwavho Emenecha,
One of the tracks on the album, called Vha matongoni, illustrates the life and connections those who lived in the past had with their ancestors. “The main objective of this poetry album is to connect people with their past. The young ones should be taught the importance of our culture and tradition, and one of the most effective ways to do that is through music. I am happy that, in just a few days, this album has been making its presence felt and receives fair airplay on local, regional and national radio stations,” he said.
About his latest project, he says he could not just sit back and watch while the scourge of women and child abuse escalated. “My musical gift is meant to educate people about what is happening around them. Women and children are vulnerable, and they need voices to back up their plight. That is why I

ing music that gets to the fans. He says that Miloro is just the start of many more great things to come as he has several songs he plans on releasing next year.
“Miloro is one of my best products, which is being very well received so far. I get a lot of good feedback and compliments from my fans. People enjoy my music and are craving for more,” he said.
Jah Chronick was born into a musical family, with some of his brothers and cousins also known in the industry, which influenced his own passion for music from a tender age. In 2019, he released two demo tracks, titled Rise and Father Give Me Light, which had already earned him recognition in local music circles.
He just did Grade 12 at Sinthumule High School and plans on becoming a full-time musician from next year. He describes himself as a peace-loving artist. “That’s why both young and old like my music, because it brings positive vibes,” he said.
His fans can look out for his second single, Why Ompfara Soh, in January next year.
Miloro is available on music platforms such as YouTube and Spotify.
Tshinombeloni Family spoil their fans with album
By Elmon Tshikhudo
During the Covid-19 pandemic, the wellknown Tshivenda music group Tshinombeloni Family were forced to hold back on recording because of the tight restrictions the country had been under. After the restrictions were lifted, however, the band got going and started compiling all the new music they had been stockpiling since into their album, Tshinombeloni Family Volume 7, Munna Muswa.
The album, which was released in February this year, was recorded and produced by multi-talented instrumentalist and studio owner Mr Nelton Dama of the Dama Music Production Studio at Tshifulanani Fhasi ha Bada and is still doing very well and receiving massive airplay on different radio stations.
But Tshinombeloni Family had another surprise for their fans when they released yet another smashing album, called Mutondi, on Wednesday, 7 December – just in time for Christmas. The album, also produced and recorded at the Dama studio, is packed with hits, with Mutondi
(title track) and Vhakale seeming to be the most popular among them.
The group leader, Mr Reckson Mathoho, says their archives were practically overflowing with new music that had yet to be released. “Because there was not much else to do during Covid, we spent our time composing songs. We have quite a lot of new songs that are ready for release. We know our previous album is still in demand, but we felt we should give our fans a Christmas gift. Volume 7 is hot, and we did our best to produce only the best Tshivenda music. They will definitely enjoy this one during the festivities,” he said. Mathoho says they will be touring a little to promote the new album and do a few live shows.
Dama has only praise for the group. “This is one of the best groups I have ever worked with.
Their music is unique and, judging from the positive public reception their music gets, they are destined for greater things,” he said.
Tshinombeloni Family’s music will only be available on digital music platforms from next year.
To many people, this may also be a time of sadness, anguish and despair. Accidents on our roads, mainly caused by reckless and negligent driving, unwarranted crime and drug and alcohol abuse, are the main contributory factors. Our behaviour, attitude and conduct during this time will be depended upon.”
Ravele also called on pedestrians to be careful when they walk along roads. “Lots of accidents also occur when pedestrians drink and take to the roads. Pedestrians must always wear visible clothes at night, so that they can be seen by motorists.
“Parents, please take special care of your children; they should not be allowed to play close to main roads or cross the roads alone at this busy time of the year. It is also vital for parents to use their money wisely, because January is around the corner and money will be needed for school items and other household needs,” she advised.
She further reminded long-distance drivers to take regular breaks when they feel tired, and all motorists to obey and observe the rules of the road to reach their destinations safely.
“On behalf of the SABC Combo, we wish all our listeners, residents, tourists and those who will be travelling to and from our province a safe journey. Don’t drink and drive. Let’s all be responsible and arrive alive. May your Christmas be filled with happiness, joy and peace. We wish you all a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year!”

Nandoni will soon provide water
By Silas Nduvheni
The Minister of Water and Sanitation, Senzo Mchunu, said that the Nandoni Dam’s pump station would be tested within the next three weeks to determine whether the water pipelines leading to the Nsami Dam in Giyani had been connected correctly to enable the supply of water to the 24 affected villages in the area.
Mchunu was briefing President Cyril Ramaphosa and the media on the progress on the Giyani Bulk Water Supply project on Sunday, 11 December. The president conducted a site visit to the Nandoni Dam to assesses progress made on the project, which is aimed at alleviating water scarcity and ensuring a consistent and reliable water supply in the area.
Ramaphosa was accompanied by Mchunu, Limpopo Premier Chupu Mathabatha and Executive Mayor of the Vhembe District Municipality Dowelani Nenguda. “We cannot, however, provide you with an exact date when these affected areas will be supplied with running water from their taps because there might be unforeseen circumstances that arise, such as strikes by workers,
villages
which could delay the water project,” said Mchunu.
The Giyani Bulk Water project was initiated in 2014 to address the severe water challenges in the Greater Giyani Local Municipality by transferring water from the Nandoni Dam to Nsami Dam and the Middle Letaba water system.
Ramaphosa first engaged with traditional leaders and communities living around the Nandoni Dam area to hear from them why they have been without clean running water for so long, while the dam was at full capacity. Afterwards, he proceeded to the community engagement held at the Giyani Stadium.
Ramaphosa said that the lack of skills by some of the service providers, corruption and wasteful state funds were behind the delays in providing clean water to the affected areas.
“Over R1 billion of the R4 billion set aside for the Giyani Bulk Water Supply project was misused and disappeared, but we are pleased that the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) is currently busy with its investigations into the matter. Those found guilty of misusing funds will be held accountable and the consequences shall be imposed. We can promise the affected communities around the Nandoni Dam and Greater Giyani Municipality that, come end of March 2023, they will have clean running water from their taps,” Ramaphosa said.
Mathabatha said he was pleased with the outcome of the engagement between President Ramaphosa and the affected communities regarding the Giyani Bulk Water project. He was also satisfied that the challenges around the project were receiving attention directly from the President’s office and that greater progress has been made.

If you keep quiet, you may be killed
By Thembi Siaga
With the focus on gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), the Given Bungeni Foundation (GBF) conducted a campaign to encourage victims to speak up. On Friday, 8 December, the GBF, in collaboration with the Waterval Victim Empowerment Programme (WVEP), held an event at the Bungeni Tribal Council Office that was attended by hundreds of villagers.
The various stakeholders in attendance included the National Department of Social Development, the Waterval SAPS, the Institute of Afrikology, the Old Mutual Foundation and several other bodies. The
Department of Social Development donated 248 containers of Nestlé Lactogen Stage 2 infant formula, 480 Nestum baby cereals to 300 mothers and 500 books and blankets.
The recipients were excited and deeply touched by the donation. Hosi Given Bungeni has offered offices to the Bungeni Heritage and Social Cohesion Forum that will have a GBVF desk for victims in need of information and assistance.
Bungeni said that the increase of GBVF was the result of multiple unreported cases because of fear of the perpetrators. “Hence, we teach our community members that if they are mistreated or intimidated, they should come forward and raise their voices to social workers and other structures.
Because if they keep silent, one of them might end up being killed,” she said.
Florah Ndzovela, one of the residents, felt the event was very insightful. “We were encouraged not to keep secrets regarding abuse, whether it is from our spouses, dads, uncles, or relatives; abusive culture should be denounced,” she said.
Dr Ashantewaa Ngidi, a director of the Institute of Afrikology, said the campaign’s major objective was to make the area a zero-GBVF zone.
“We also wanted to assist the community with important information around their rights and the assistance they can receive if they know of anyone who is needing help from GBVF,” she said.
DoE must honour promises and deliver classrooms, says SANCO
By Bernard Chiguvare
The Tshakhuma branch of the South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) has made an urgent call on the Limpopo Department of Basic Education to speed up the process of procuring mobile classrooms for the Grade 10 learners at Maswie Secondary school.
The school currently has 77 Grade 10 learners who all share a single classroom. Subjects such as social sciences, mathematics and physical science are conducted outside, under the trees.
According to members of the school governing body (SGB), the situation with overcrowded classrooms worsened when their neighbouring school, Mavhungu Andries Secondary, closed the stream for maths and physical science. Learners who take these subjects had to transfer to Maswie Secondary.
Tshakhuma SANCO says the situation at Maswie Secondary makes learning and teaching very difficult. “Having to conduct lessons under the trees is really not a conducive learning environment. The learners must first move chairs outside
to sit on before their classes start and the time spent on preparation for the lessons is not compensated. People constantly walking by and making noise break learners’ attention, and when it rains there can be no lessons,” said Mr Joel Mulaudzi, secretary of the Tshakhuma SANCO branch.
This is not the first time SANCO has raised the issue with the Limpopo Department of Basic Education. In June this year, the department promised to deliver four mobile classrooms within four months, but this has still not been done. The department also promised to build 10 permanent classrooms and an administration block.
“We are expecting even
more Grade 10s next year and one classroom is definitely not going to accommodate them all. The department must honour their promise and deliver mobile classrooms while they wait for their budget to build permanent classrooms,” said Mulaudzi.
The Limpopo Department of Basic Education said that the contract for prefabs had expired mid-2022, but that they were busy finalising the adjudication for new service providers. Schools in need of mobile classes will start receiving prefabs from February 2023. Regarding the building of permanent structures, they said that the school was on their priority list for the next financial year.

Out of the scrap Chamauya finds ways to proudly support himself
By Elmon Tshikhudo
In 2004, Genius Chamauya left his native Zimbabwe in search of greener pastures in South Africa, but faced with the brutal reality of unemployment in the country, he too had to resort to piece jobs to keep himself alive.
Despite hard times, the 36-year-old from Masvingo, Zimbabwe, who now lives in Manamani outside Thohoyandou, was able to put a plate of food on the table every day with the money he earned from his odd jobs. To him, life was still better than it had been back home.
But as fate would have it, Chamauya was dealt a terrible blow when he was attacked by a crocodile while crossing
the Dzindi River from Itsani to his home at Manamani. He lost his right leg in the attack, which left him cripple and dependant on crutches to be able to move about. Of course, Chamauya could not do physical labour anymore as he used to, to earn a living for himself, and as a foreigner, he did not qualify for a social grant either, so that was the start of a hard life for him, living on handouts.
Faced with poverty and starvation, the crippled man sat and lamented his situation but could find no solution.
One day he saw people collecting all kinds of scrap and, curious, he enquired about it.
“I was told that people were selling this to a local scrap collector. I took up the challenge and, on my crutches, went
out collecting empty bottles and pieces of scrap metal. The first day I managed to make R70. That was the turning point in my life, and I have been doing this for years now.
On any given day, I am able to make around R60, which goes a long way in taking care of my needs. With the money I make, I buy food and other necessities and, even though it is not that much, I know I will not starve,” Chamauya said.
“God gave us limbs to help us function in life. But God also gave us brains, so that a person like myself, with only one leg, can think of ways to fend for themselves. To everyone out there I say, do not wait for handouts, because that will delay you. Stand up and do something to better your own life.”

Residents from villages across the Vhembe region were in a jubilant and festive mood on Saturday, 3 December, when the birthday celebration of Pastor Murunwa Tshigomana, founder and leader of the Back to Creator Worship Centre at Tswinga, turned into an occasion of giving to the needy.
The function, where Tshigomana handed out food parcels to 60 poor families from different villages, was attended by pastors and representatives from the royal families at Muledane and Tswinga.
This initiative, which started more than a decade ago, has over the years benefitted hundreds of disadvantaged community members. One of the beneficiaries, Ms Rambani Mu-
dau, who is blind and had to be helped to the podium, poured her heart out. “I am from a very poor family that cannot afford much. We depend on government grants that is not even enough. With prices of foodstuffs having skyrocketed, it has become very difficult to afford groceries. Pastor Tshigomana has been sent by God to rescue us who are in need. May our Lord richly bless her, so that she continues to make a difference in people’s lives,” she said.
Vhakoma Vho-Freddy Neswiswi from the Tswinga traditional authority thanked the church for the role it played in improving the lives of people from villages. “We are very happy to have this church in our village. Please continue doing good in our communities,” he said.
Pastor Tshigomana said she and her church had taken it upon themselves to take care of God’s people.
“We started many years ago to uplift the lives of the disadvantaged by giving out clothing and food. We recently partnered with SEDA, and members of the community were trained in different skills. With our limited resources, we have managed to help many, but with the increasing number of people in need and the ever-rising prices in food, we are overstretched. We thank those who assisted, of whom many were beneficiaries of this programme who are now giving back. We are calling upon more Good Samaritans to come onboard, and to the beneficiarieswe urge you to give your lives to Jesus and all will be well with you,” she said.
Musina Women in Business launched
By Bernard Chiguvare
With the realisation that something was lacking in their lives, 63 women from Musina launched a non-profit organisation called Musina Women in Business on Saturday, 3 December. The launch was held at the Musina Multipurpose Centre.
The women all run different businesses, ranging from events management, farming, manufacturing and transport to construction.
“We want to have a safe space where we can advise one another on how to grow in
business, and the organisation provides that,” said Ms Edith Magwira, the secretary of the organisation.
Magwira explained how everything started and who the real brain behind the initiative was. “It’s funny how it all started. We were invited to the Limpopo Women in Tourism breakfast event, hosted by the executive mayor of the Vhembe District Municipality, Dowelani Nenguda, at the Makhado Show Grounds. We noticed how organised some of the women from other places were and we admired what they did, so we took it upon ourselves to establish an
organisation in Musina where we can share information and experiences,” she said.
Magwira said that the organisation would like to see businesses grow and create employment for other Musina residents. The current committee is made up of Ms Kedibone Mulaudzi-Makwarela (chairperson), Ms Maureen Makhado (treasurer) and Magwira as secretary.
The organisation also wants to address gender parity in Musina. “We wish to see women counted in decision making in our town and the country as a whole,” said Magwira.

Principal Phungo thanked for the way he shaped many young minds
By Kaizer Nengovhela
Manaledzi High School’s principal, Mr Joseph Phungo (60), bade farewell to the school and its students at the end of November after serving 37 years at the school.
To show how much he had been appreciated, a farewell function was organised for him by some of his former students who had been taught by him many years ago. The function was held at the school on 3 December.
Judge Thogomelani Tshidada, who also had the privilege to be taught by Phungo, said that other teachers should be inspired and motivated by Phungo’s dedication and passion. “Teachers should be proud of what they are doing in order to restore the dignity of their profession,” he said.
Tshidada said Phungo’s name would go down in history as one of those people who had played a meaningful role in the development of education. “He can be described as a good shepherd and loyalist. Mr Phungo always gave a smile to the learners he served and made sure that he raised the standard of education. He is a great man who always raised our educational flag high by making sure that he produced hundreds of professionals through his excellent teaching skills. We can all agree that he loved his work and went the extra mile to
fulfil his obligations.”
Phungo thanked Manaledzi High’s school governing body, the learners and the community stakeholders for giving him the opportunity to realise his potential as a teacher at the same school for 37 years.
“There is nothing that makes me happier than meeting the doctors, judges, engineers, teachers, lawyers and other professionals that I have produced. I have really
worked hard, and now this is the perfect time for me to rest,” he said.
Phungo shared some advice with other teachers. “Work is not just about money. It is about putting a smile on the face of the person you are assisting. When you go to class, you must be fully prepared. If you want to enjoy your work, love what you do and execute all your duties on time.”
Thovhele Nelwamondo urges the parents to support local schools
By Elmon Tshikhudo Outgoing Grade 7 learners
from Tshivhale Primary School at Lwamondo received a royal send-off when the senior traditional leader, Thovhele Calvin Nelwamondo, attended their farewell function at the school on Friday, 9 December.
Nelwamondo wished the young students well on their next schooling journey. He said that it pained him so much to see schools that he had initiated in the village closed as a result of low enrolment. “As leaders,
we did our utmost to ensure that learners do not have to walk long distances to school, but these schools are becoming white elephants as parents sacrifice their hard-earned cash to send their children to far-off schools instead. We cannot, as a community, afford to lose such heritage, which had produced national icons in the past. We urge all of you to support our local schools,” he said.
The guest speaker, Mr Musiwalo Magwaba, who had also been a learner at the school, encouraged parents to involve themselves in their children’s education. “My mother used to
brew traditional beer (mahafhe) and gin (thothotho) to generate the income that saw us through school. We are very thankful for what she did for us,” he said, echoing Thovhele Nelwamondo’s sentiment for parents to support local schools.
The school principal, Ms Florence Fhulufhedzani Munyai, said they were greatly humbled by Thovhele Nelwamomdo’s presence at the function. “It concerns us too to see the low enrolment at local schools as we are also not spared, with only 24 learners graduating this year,” she said.
Zimbabwean delegation receive a warm welcome by Musina delegates
The three-day mayoral exchange visit to discuss the twinning agreement between the Musina Municipality and Beitbridge Municipality was successfully concluded in Musina on Saturday, 10 December.
The Zimbabwean delegates from the Beitbridge Municipality, led by the mayor, Munyaradzi Chitsunge, arrived last Thursday and were officially received by Musina’s mayor, Nkhanedzeni Godfrey Mawela.
The twinning agreement was initially signed in October 2004 and amended in October
this year. In the agreement, the two municipalities committed to working together and sharing the best practices in mining, agriculture, tourism, infrastructure development and education.
During the official welcoming function, Mayor Mawela told the visiting delegates that his municipality valued the vital role that international relations played in capacitating and empowering the ordinary citizens of both South Africa and Zimbabwe.
“As the local government from South Africa and our counterparts in Zimbabwe, we need to activate all the available
avenues to promote social cohesion, boost our local economies and create an enabling environment for various community-development initiatives. The emphasis of this mutual relationship should not be on dissecting our challenges, but rather on finding a way through these obstacles and sharing some of the best innovations that can revitalise our economy and create more jobs,” said Mawela.
In response, Beitbridge’s Mayor Chitsunge said that prospects of skills development in the two municipalities were very high, given the learning opportunities this twinning agreement presented.
“The blueprints that we may have put through require the utmost commitment from all our teams to make this initiative a success. We must be driven to take part with our mightiest of efforts because our people await to receive the fruit of the trust they have laid upon us. We salute everyone’s commitment to the development of Africa, and we hope this concept will encourage other local authorities to follow suit,” Chitsunge said.
The Zimbabwean delegation was taken on a guided tour to local agricultural farms, Nwanedi Agrihub and The Big Tree, among others.

Rewards for Rodadau Ladies FC’s players, management and the fans
By Kaizer Nengovhela
Last Thursday was a memorable day for Rodadau Ladies football club, which is affiliated to the Sasol Women’s League Limpopo Stream. The club held their awards ceremony at the Davidson Resort in Mbhalati on Thursday, 8 December.
The function resembled a feast of trophies, medals and certificates as players, supporters and officials proudly ascended the stage to reap the rewards of their hard work.
The guest speaker, Mr Thomas Mutavhatsindi, said that the success of a soccer game did not necessarily start on the field. “Success goes hand in hand with planning. You must set achievable goals for yourselves, and you will then reap success.”
He praised Rodadau FC’s
management for their dedication, saying that running a women’s team had more challenges than a professional team. He appealed to the players to refrain from immoral behaviour and for those still in school to study hard. He applauded those who received awards, calling them the “ambassadors” of the team.
Mutavhatsindi emphasised the importance of sport and education for the future of the youth.
The manager of the team, Mr Ernest Mulaudzi, said the main purpose of the function was to motivate the players to work hard in the new season.
He congratulated the players who received awards and said they deserved to be honoured in public, because what they had achieved made every one of them proud. He attributed the accolades received to the
discipline and dedication of the players, and the way the team was being managed.
The players who received awards during the event are Lethabo Sello (player of the season), Sbongile Sebetha (top goal scorer), Puledi Sebola (midfielder of the season), Pretty Rampasa (most dedicated player), Thabang Thabetha (defender of the season) and Queen Ngobeni (most inspired player of the season). Thabiso Manyane, Shonisani Mafela, Maite Malahlela and Lebogang Rasuku received awards for joining the team when it was established in 2019.
Sebetha, who is the team captain, said she was very excited about her award, having worked very hard for it. She promised the team management that they were going to get promoted to a higher league next season.
Malaiskop lose against Try Again
By Kaizer Nengovhela
Madombidzha Try Again were too strong for Mailaskop Pull Together when they beat them 1-0 in their Safa Vhembe league match played at Madombidzha Grounds on Sunday.
The game was a typical thriller from the onset, with both sides displaying entertaining football. Pull Together came close to scoring twice in quick succession within the first 10 minutes. In the first instance, their centre forward, Ronewa Mulaudzi, caused an upset. He received a beautiful pass from Bryton Rasimphi just outside the penalty box but hesitated for far too long to unleash before losing possession.
Mulaudzi turned supplier moments thereafter. He dished out a pre-cooked pass to Vhulenda Mudau, whose volley missed the goal mouth by inches.
The goal that earned Try Again victory came in the 27th minute. Tshitangoni Mulaudzi blasted in a rocket, following a good pass by Warren Senetja.
Pull Together missed a golden opportunity when their dribbling wizard, Emmanuel Mphephu, forced his way through from the far left corner but shot wide.

Lady luck not on the side of Matangari High Aims
By Victor Mukwevho
Matangari High Aims must have wondered how they had wronged the football gods to deserve such harsh treatment when they played to a 1-1 draw against the defending champions, Juventus Thobela FC, in an U/16 league game played at the Makonde Grounds on Sunday afternoon.
They were leading 1-0 with only a minute to go when one of their defenders, Mualusi Mudau, conceded a penalty by handling the ball inside the penalty area. Juventus FC equalised through Mmbetsheleni Daba.
High Aims frustrated the defending champions from the first whistle, playing a defensive football game with at least six
defenders at the back, relying only on counter-attacks. Juventus tried its best to play its own carpet football, but could not penetrate the rock-solid High Aims defence. The scoresheet was still blank at the break.
In the second half, High Aims drew first blood when Mulanga Maswime picked up a pass from Muofhe Radzilani, who was on the right flank, and beat the keeper hands down. The game ended in a 1-all draw.
After the game, the stand-in coach of Matangari High Aims, Mr Funanani Nedambale, praised his boys for holding Juventus FC to a draw. “The boys played very well today. It is not easy to get a point from the champions. This performance will give them confidence to perform better in our next games,” he said.
Jeff “911” Magagane loses fight against Batyi
By Kaizer Nengovhela
Friday night, 2 December, ended in bitter disappointment for local professional boxer Jeff “911” Magagane, when he lost in a national featherweight bout against Zolisa Batyi from the Eastern Cape. The fight formed part of the Limpopo Champions Boxing Promotions tournament that was staged at the Ngoako Ramatlhodi Sports Complex in Seshego.
The tournament coincided with the launch of the 16 Days of Activism of No Violence Against Women and Children.
Batyi was all over Magagane from the first round, pushing him into a corner on countless occasions. The referee counted to eight when Magagane was floored by a killer punch to the forehead in the second round, and Magagane raised his hand to accept defeat. He continued to disappoint his fans by his failure to retaliate when Batyi made him his punching bag in the last two rounds.
In the middleweight division,
Pieter De Klerk beat Khodani Nephalama by technical knockout. Nephalama, who could not match his opponent, was beaten in the second round.
In the junior welterweight division, Tshifhiwa Munyai overpowered Crispin Moliati from Malawi when he beat him in the third round by technical knockout.
Local female boxer Lufuno Mutshayi won on points against Nosiacwase Dube from KwaZulu-Natal in the female junior featherweight division. Mutshayi showed her supporters what she was made of when she convincingly beat Dube in the sixth round.
Tamiwe Chisolola from Malawi was the weakest link as he was knocked down by Sifiso Hlungwane in the first round of the junior lightweight division.
Fhulufhelo Ramaliba collected the most points at the expense of Wayne Lottering in their light-heavyweight fight, which lasted four rounds, while Arnel Lubisi beat Abel Ndaba in the bantamweight division.

Lacoste Morning Stars won the Thulamela Local Municipality Youth Council’s one-day soccer tournament that was held at the Makwarela Stadium on Saturday, 10 December. The ladies soccer team’s victory came after they beat Rodadau Ladies FC 5-4, following a penalty shootout.
Four local ladies soccer teams - Lacoste Morning Stars, Tshandama Ladies FC, Rodadau Ladies FC and For Joy Ladies FC - participated in the one-day soccer tournament, which was in honour of Banyana Banyana after they had emerged as the African Confederation Cup (AFCON) champions in July this year.
Rodadau FC beat Tshandama Ladies FC 3-0, while Lacoste Morning Stars beat For Joy Ladies FC 2-0.
The champions received a soccer kit, ball, trophy and gold medals, while the runners-up received a soccer kit, ball and silver medals. The third-placed team received a soccer ball and bronze medals and the fourth-placed team a soccer kit and ball.
According to Mr Phathutshedzo Manenzhe, one of the organisers of the tournament, the Thulamela Local Municipality’s Youth Council is committed to eradicating substance abuse, such as drugs and alcohol, in the communities.
“We want to keep young girls busy and out of trouble, so they don’t end up in jail. Local girls should take playing
soccer seriously. We look forward to seeing young girls from the Thulamela Local Municipality also play for Banyana Banyana, and even for international teams. We thank the municipal manager of Thulamela, Mr Masala Makumule, and his special-programme team for taking a lead in sponsoring the tournament,” Manenzhe said.

Benny’s and United share the spoils
By Kaizer Nengovhela
Two Safa Vhembe contenders in Stream E, Benny’s Care Academy and Muraleni United, played to 1-all draw at Tshiozwi on Sunday.
Benny’s showed no respect for their elder brothers and matched them pound for pound in all departments. Benny’s threatened to score in the 12th minute. Siyaphela Maluleke won a loose ball in the
35-metre area and unleashed a volley from just outside the penalty box. The ball missed the target by inches, much to the disappointment of the team’s fans.
United broke the deadlock in the 28th minute. Rowen Thobakgale won the ball just behind the centre line and ran towards the right corner, from where he dished up a square pass to Ebenezer Madisa, who beat the Benny’s keeper, Rone-
wa Manavhela, with a ground cutter.
Benny’s knocked on their opponents’ door three minutes later. Bravo Raphulu tried his luck from the edge of the box. United’s keeper, Tshilidzi Sithole, stretched to the limit to execute a brilliant save. The half-time score was 1-0 in favour of United.
The second half of the match was characterised by wasted chances on the part of the Benny’s’ strikers. George Moichielo missed a shot from the edge of the box after receiving a good pass from Rudzani Mutsharini.
Moichielo dribbled past a number of defenders, but hesitated too long to release and he was dispossessed.
Benny’s could have scored more than a dozen goals, had they managed to convert all their chances. They were, however, denied sure goals by the experienced goalkeeper of United. The equalising goal came late in the game, when Kevin Mahangwahaya scored with a beautiful shot.
Second victory for Vondwe Bullets
By Frank Mavhungu
Vondwe XI Bullets registered their second win this season with their 1-0 victory over Mikhado FC in their ABC Motsepe League match that was played at the Tshifudi Stadium on Saturday.
The win was a sweet revenge for Bullets against Mikhado after being beaten 0-1 by Mikhado in their opening league
match of the season that was played at the Rabali Stadium about three months ago.
The team had its first win under the guidance of the new head coach, Mr Lufuno Ndou, who was appointed to the position three weeks ago. Bullets played to draws in their first two matches after Ndou had taken over from Mr Oruel Sambo, who was dismissed from the club for a string of poor results
by the team.
Ndou could not hide his happiness after the game. He said that the victory was the end product of hard work and good preparations for the game.
Vondwe Bullets moved from the second-last to the third position from the bottom of the log following the victory. They have managed to deposit nine points into their league account so far.
Ndou’s counterpart from Mikhado FC, Mr Amon Phophi, blamed a number of factors for the defeat. He pointed a finger at the referee, Mr Peter Baloyi, whom he said had been one-sided throughout the game. He added that his team could not play their normal carpet football because of the pitch, which had been bumpy and slippery as a result of the rain that had fallen in the area shortly before the 15:00 kick-off time.
The game was characterised by yellow cards. The goal that separated the boys from the men came in the 34th minute.
Lucky Mutshotsho headed home, following a corner kick that was taken by Tsiko Khothisa.
Top prizes in Marshall Resort games
By Frank Mavhungu
Eighteen teams from the Thulamela municipal area will take part in this year’s edition of the Marshal Resort Soccer Tournament. The participating teams are affiliated with the Safa Vhembe Regional League and the Thulamela Local Football Association (Thulfa).
The tournament was officially launched during a ceremony held at the Marshal Resort on Monday evening. The draws for the opening matches were conducted during the ceremony. The last-16-round matches will be played at two different venues next Saturday, 24 December.
Four matches will be played
at the Tshilonwe Tshiberetheni Grounds. The opening match will be between Lambani Classic and Managa FC and is scheduled to start at 09:00. Tshifudi XI Experience and Zwaloni FC will test each other’s strength in the second fixture, which is scheduled to start at 11:00, followed by the match between Lukalo Hotspurs and Mukula Fast XI. The day’s programme will be wrapped up by the match between Phandulaluvalo FC and Tshisikamulilo FC.
The other four matches will be played at the Rambuda Tshakhumba Sports Ground. That is where Tshififi Mighty FC will take on Mulodi Freedom Birds in the opening match. The other matches
that will be staged at the same venue are Vondwe United Brothers vs Tshilonwe Young Bombers, Matsika Shooting Stars vs Thengwe Flying Peace and Berea FC vs Mukula Young Santos. Berea FC and Mukula Young Santos are the favourites to lift the trophy.
The champions will receive R12 000, a soccer kit, a floating trophy, and a soccer ball. The second-placed team will walk away with R8 000, a soccer kit and a soccer ball.
The third- and fourth-placed teams will receive R5 000 and R3 500 respectively. They will also be presented with soccer kits. Teams booted out of the tournament in the quarter-final stage will each receive a soccer kit and soccer ball.
Sambandou United Professionals and Pre-Mighty in a thrilling draw
By Frank Mavhungu
In their Safa Vhembe Regional League match that was played at the Sambandou Grounds on Sunday, Sambandou United Professionals (SUPRO) shared the glory with their neighbours, Tshanzhe Pre-Mighty, with whom they played to a 1-1 draw.
The game was one of two halves. The visitors were unstoppable in the first half, while SUPRO took the game to their opponents in the last 45 minutes.
Tshanzhe’s lethal striker, Vhugala Thina, was a thorn in the flesh of the defence of SUPRO. Thina was everywhere, collecting the ball from
the middle of the park while at the same time playing as a full striker.
The only time SUPRO came close to scoring during the first stanza was when Rolivhuwa Ndou forced his way through the defence of Tshanzhe in the 24th minute, only to cause an upset. Instead of relaxing on the ball and picking his spot, Ndou did the unexpected by shooting aimlessly from close range.
That was a wakeup call to the players of Tshanzhe. They responded by initiating some promising moves from the middle of the park, but their strikers were unlucky at the goal finish.
Tshanzhe broke the deadlock towards the end of the
first half. Their Rastafarian striker, Vhugala Thina, gave the ball the final touch after a scramble within the box. Tshanzhe enjoyed their 1-0 lead until proceedings for the first half came to an end.
In the second half, Tshanzhe committed suicide by abandoning their positions and packing themselves at the back to defend their 1-0 lead. That gave the home side an opportunity to attack in their numbers. Their efforts paid dividends when they found the equalizer through Tshivhonammbi Nthangeni in the 74th minute.
Tshanzhe reverted to their normal attacking football after conceding the goal, but it was already too late for them.

Hard-earned victory for Mpheni Defenders
By Frank Mavhungu
A solitary goal that was scored towards the end of the game was good enough for Mpheni Home Defenders to collect the maximum league points in their ABC Motsepe League match against United Artists.
The match was played at the Makhuvha Stadium last Friday afternoon, and it marked the seventh victory for Home Defenders in succession. Home Defenders are still to drop a point this season. They are leading the pack with 21 points after winning all seven matches they have played to date.
During an interview with the head coach of the team, Mr Sydwell Phu-
ravhathu, shortly after the game, he attributed the team’s success to hard work and dedication by the players, management and the technical staff. He said that his squad was well balanced in all departments. Phuravhathu said that his team had managed to score in all their league games and conceded only one goal.
Coming back to their game against United Artists, Phuravhathu said that the game had been the toughest one of the season. He said that the technical staff of United Artists had done their homework and had had a good game plan. He reckoned that for them to penetrate the defence of Artists had been difficult although they had been
dictating terms in the middle of the park for the better part of the game.
The head coach of United Artists, Mr Thikhedzo Mashau, was singing his players’ praises after the game, even though they had given away vital league points. He said that the players had done everything according to his instructions.
The goal that earned Home Defenders three vital points came in the dying minutes of the game. A defender of Artists, Aaron Sithole, deflected the ball back into his own net in an effort to clear it.
United Artists are lying in the third position from the bottom of the log after the defeat.
Munaca FC fire their head coach
By Frank Mavhungu
The head coach of Munaca FC, Mr Solly Luvhengo, is the latest victim of dismissal. Luvhengo’s relationship with the club ended abruptly last Friday. His dismissal follows a string of poor results by the team over the past weeks.
Luvhengo said that he was told about his dismissal shortly after their league game against Musina United, which was played at the Musina Old Mine Stadium on Sunday. The game ended in a goalless draw.
Luvhengo said that the dismissal came as a huge surprise to him. He said that his team was still in the race for the league championship as they are currently lying in the third position on the log standings with 12 points, nine behind the pace setters, Mpheni Home Defenders. He reckoned that his dismissal was premature as anything was still possible in their seven remaining matches. He said, however, that he had accepted the dismissal in good spirit.
Asked about his next stop, Luvhengo said that speaking about his next move was premature as he was still battling to come to terms with his dismissal. Although he did not want to comment about that, Limpopo Mirror has been reliably informed that Luvhengo is one of the three candidates who have been
shortlisted for the coaching job in one of the Premier League clubs in Eswatini, Mbabane Highlanders FC.
The chief executive officer of Munaca FC, Mr Michael Muzila, has confirmed that the club has parted ways with Luvhengo in an amicable way. Asked whether they were intending to promote the current assistant coach, Mr Moses Muthelo, to the position of head coach, Mr Muzila said that the management was still going to decide on the matter. Muthelo was appointed to the position three weeks ago, following the resignation of Mr Mashudu “Coolio” Ndou.
I will bring back the title, says “KO Girl”
By Victor Mukwevho
After training Raider Muleba to become the very first female boxer from Limpopo to win a national title nearly two months ago, Mr John “Smoking Joe” Nemakonde already has a second title in his sights. This time another one of his boxers, Mashudu “K0 Girl” Ramakuela, challenges Nozipho Bell for the national championship belt at Gqeberha on Sunday.
Speaking to Limpopo Mirror before one of their training
sessions recently, Nemakonde said he was very confident that Ramakuela would be the second boxer from his stable to bring the national championship belt to the Thulamela Municipality this year.
“We are not going to Gqeberha for a picnic, but to take the championship belt and bring it home. We are fully aware how we are going to be treated there, but we will win,” he said.
A relaxed-looking Ramakuela, who is very optimistic about winning the fight on Sunday, said she could not wait to get into the ring
with her opponent. “Even though she is a closed book to me, I am ready to knock her out on Sunday. I am worried that, when you fight away from home, you don’t have to leave the results in the hands of the judges. So, to avoid a home-town decision, I will have to knock her out,” she said.
She said she was well prepared to go for the scheduled 10 rounds if necessary. “If she is tough enough to absorb the punishment, I will dish it out to her. I am more than ready to go the distance, but believe you me, she will not,” she said.
