Die boom het blykbaar net na 05:00 omgeval, waarna ‘n motoris daarin vasgery het en ernstige skade aan sy/haar voertuig aangerig is. Onsekerheid bestaan oor wie die voertuig se eienaar is. Volgens Mark is dit ook nie die eerste keer dat die boom skade aan ‘n voertuig aanrig nie. Tydens ‘n vorige geleentheid het ‘n tak afgebreek en op ‘n voertuig te lande gekom. In daardie stadium het sekere dele van die dorp meer as vyf weke sonder water gesit.
Hulle het ook gesê dat ‘n verband bestaan tussen Makhado en Vhembe en dat Makhado versuim om die probleem van watervoorsiening op ‘n politieke vlak met Vhembe aan te spreek. Vir baie is die situasie verby lagwekkend en glad nie meer snaaks nie. Inteendeel, baie meen die waterskaarste is nie meer nuus nie. Die groot nuus sal wees as water weer ‘n slag beskikbaar is!
Intussen het die Demokratiese Alliansie (DA) se kiesafdelingshoof vir die Makhado Munisipaliteit en lid van die provinsiale wetgewer, mnr. Risham Maharaj, besoek afgelê op Louis Trichardt en op 9 September ‘n verklaring uitgereik, waarin hy sê dat hulle die Makhado Munisipaliteit by die Suid-Afrikaanse Menseregtekommissie aangekla het oor die kroniese watertekorte. Waarom hulle die Makhado Munisipaliteit en nie die Vhembe Distriksmunisipaliteit, wat in beheer is van water en sanitasie in Vhembe, aangekla het nie, was onduidelik. Op ‘n navraag hieroor het die DA gesê hulle het Makhado aangekla, omdat die probleem inwoners van Makhado affekteer.

Herwinning ‘n goeie idee, maar kopseer vir ander

She presented the regiment with royal colours in that year,” said Bruce this week. These were the colours presented to Queen Elizabeth II in 2011. Both the regimental and royal colours were pre sented. The Atholl Highlanders are also unique in the sense that not all Highlander regiments have royal colours.
In May 2011, a year prior to his father’s death when Bruce held the title of the Marquis of Tullibardine, Bruce had the unique opportunity to come face to face with Queen Elizabeth II as, for the first time ever, he commanded the Atholl Highlanders. The occasion was an historic one during which the Atholl Highlanders presented their unit colours to Queen Elizabeth II at their Braemar parade, some 40km from Blair Castle. This historic castle has been the ancient home and fortress of the earls and dukes of Atholl for more than 735 years. Today, this castle is a world-class tourist attraction and is Scotland’s most visited private home. It displays beautiful furniture, paintings, arms and armour, china and other unique treasures that present a picture of Scottish life from the 16th century to the present day.

We know Bruce as the owner of the Stamp Shop in Louis Trichardt, but in Scotland he is referred to as “your grace” as the 12th Duke of Atholl – a title bestowed upon him after the death of his father and title predecessor, John Murray from Haenertsburg, in May 2012. Bruce’s family comes from the Clan Murray, one of the oldest noble families in Scotland.

Jan was ‘n avonturier en pionier in murg en been. Nadat die burgeroorlog in Mosambiek tot ‘n einde gekom het in 1992, het hy besluit om hierdie land te verken. Baie mense sal hom ont hou as die baanbreker van die “bospad” tussen Pafuri en Vilanculos. Sou jy vandag nog daardie pad ry, sal jy steeds van die rigtingbordjies raak loop wat hy meer as 20 jaar gelede daar geplant het. Gedurende sy verkenning van Mosambiek het ‘n liefde by hom ontstaan vir die Bazaru to-eilandegroep en het hy ‘n kamp in die dorpie Vilanculos ontwikkel. Hy het gedurende hierdie tydperk die Portugese taal aangeleer en kon later die taal vlot praat. Op sy oudag sou Jan hierdie tydperk van sy lewe as ‘n hoogtepunt beskryf.

Die artikel het heelwat kommentaar op sosiale media ontlok, merendeels van mense wat eerder gekla het oor gebrekkige wetstoepassing ten opsigte van verkeersoortreders. “Mense stop nie by stoptekens nie en by sirkel by die mall stop taxis in die sirkel en laai af en op met geen verkeers owerhede daar nie,” skryf Jan Wilkins op die koerant se Facebook-blad. “Die stopteken by Meyerstraat wat in Rooibok indraai word sekondeliks vermy. Daar gaan nog ‘n ernstige ongeluk plaasvind. Niemand stop daar nie,” was Retha van Heerden se opmerking.

Lee (28) was born with a neurological disorder that inhibits the full use of her right leg and arm. She has, however, never allowed this inability to become a disability, living her life to the fullest and constantly challenging her body. Although physically strong, every now and then she shows signs of emotional weakness. She is not keen to talk about it, but something or someone has definitely left a scar.
Zachary is often referred to as the local Bear Grylls. When it comes to the outdoors, there is very little he does not know. His insatiable thirst for adventure has taken the 39-year-old geologist on some of the world’s most dangerous wilderness trails. It is said that he once disappeared along the infamous West Coast Trail in British Columbia. When he reappeared 14 days later, he had a nasty scar on his left shoulder and a haunted look in his eyes.

Since his work often takes him away on extended business trips abroad and both her daughters had left the nest, Lisa has taken up hiking and bird watching to fill her days and get out of the empty house. She frequently visits nature reserves and national parks around South Africa.

Gerard is a Dutch adventure tourist. He ticks most of the boxes as far as stereotyping is concerned. He is slightly impatient and not discreet at all. He retired from the university where he was teaching a year ago and now at the age of 66 he spends his time travelling the world.
When the competition started, they had to choose between two or three entries, but this has changed. They opted to use Gerrit’s story this week and eventually had to choose between five really good stories.Inall the entries the character of Gerrit featured in the Angolan Bush War. Anke Roos submitted a really good entry, wherein he lost his leg while trying to save his fellow soldiers. The very talented Zwothe Thothori submitted two stories. The first one contained a lot of graphic detail, depicting the horror of a war. The second one was more moderate but still highlighted the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Shabnim’s small stature may be deceiving. She is a tough adventurer and even formed part of an expedition to Marion Island. She looks young, but at 42 she has seen a lot in life. She lectures at a local university and is well-respected in her field.

Our winning entry came from a 16-year-old Ridgeway College student, Ndivho Mukoma. She turned the horror of conflict into a love story. The ending is sad, but so is
Adrian is a boisterous character who enjoys controlling the conversation. He is normally the one that likes to walk in the front, sharing his expertise freely with whoever wants to listen. He says he has travelled all over the world, but specifically likes the cold Russian climate. His most enjoyable travel experience was an epic snowmobile Journey in the Ural Mountains.
The weekly travel episodes are written by our own staff and these focus on the journey of a group of adventurers who are exploring the Old Salt Trail in the western Soutpansberg. They follow a five-day route, during which they encounter many of the treasures the mountain has to offer. The group of adventurers comprise 11 very diverse fictional travellers.
The life of the judges in our writers’ competition has become extremely complicated.
Rovha, the soft-spoken dentist, with the smiling eyes. He seems to be a loner, mostly travelling on his own. He has climbed Kilimanjaro and completed the Camino de Santiago. You will mostly find him sitting in a quiet sport reading a book or newspaper.

Two “scar stories” are featured for every day of the trip. The group members stop at a specific location for lunch and one of the members tells his or her story. Gerrit (55) comes from a military background. As a young boy, his father (also ‘n military man) shaped him into becoming a soldier. Tigers don’t cry and love is but a four-letter word. Rising to the rank of captain, he was one of the last members of the old South African Army to have seen the horrors of the Bush War on the Angolan border. With the new 1994 dispensation, he found himself on civvy street in a world he did not understand and nor did the world understand him. He never found love, although so desperately longing for it. He is constantly running away from something to somewhere, thus finding himself in the Soutpansberg. Maybe here he can find peace.
Marelize is one of the main characters in the adventure and also the narrator. She is 27 and originally from Namibia. She is a seasoned traveller and has visited countries in Europe and in the USA. She will not only describe the route being followed with its highlights, but also expand on her ten travel companions. It is important to follow closely what she says and build the characters accordingly. Marilize has a good sense of humour and willing to tackle whatever adventure awaits. She’s not that good with bike-riding and prefers walking trials.

Her soft, radiant skin glistened in the sunlight and became like a blue pearl at night. Her voice was so sweet. I was certain she must be an angel, the way her feet hardly seemed to be touching the ground and how the sand would dance at her footstep. All that I had been taught about black women was a lie. There was no ‘ugliness’ or ‘evil’ about her. Her beauty was captivating and, as absurd as it may sound, I was determined to marry her.” Now he looked a bit embarrassed, as if the notion was still unreal.
“This is a love story gone wrong. Like Romeo and Juliet; only this time, Romeo does not die,” he began, clearly steeling himself for what was to “Icome.was just 22 years old when I was forced to enlist to fight in the Apartheid war, or National Service as they called it. I resented every moment of it, constantly being called out because I couldn’t stand the conditions those we oppressed were submitted to. I got into trouble far too many times for being ‘too kind’ and merciful, or for showing compassion. There was simply no reason for me to hate people of other races. So, I didn’t understand their culture and way of living, but at no point did I feel even the slightest hint of hate,” he said, a mix of emotions on his face.

After stopping at the waterfall and admiring the beauty of the forest for a few minutes, the group got back on the trail. The lodge was not far away, and after a scramble up a rocky ledge and some more stream-hopping, they reached the lodge, where they were met by the friendly Sigurwana staff.

“As I raced through the streets, my blood ran cold; I nearly lost it. I ran blindly, as fast as I could and not caring who or what was in front of me. “I heard her screaming: ‘Wag! Moenie my verbrand nie! Wag! Gerrit, help my!’ A burning tyre hung around her neck, the light illuminating her beautiful face one last time before it literally started melting away into nothingness…
Lodge,Sigurwanawhere they were heading, was towards the west, away from the stream. The long, rocky trail traversing beautiful mountain bushveld provided some stunning views of the landscape below. Far below they could see the route they had travelled, coming from Leshiba’s Luvhondo Camp. The trail then entered Sigurwana,
“I was like a sailor on a voyage across rough seas, seeking a treasure. I was hungry. Hungry for more than just her heavenly body pressing against mine. I was hungry for the rhythm in her soul; for the humour in her heart and the love that radiated from her like a halo. I knew that what I wanted wasn’t possible. It was taboo, but I didn’t care! In my mind, I married her. I began to pester her, day and night, trying to get her to notice me,

“‘Not at all, Gerrit’, she said, and our fates were sealed from that moment on. Together, we found ourselves lost in the cornfields, and lost in each other. My love for her grew from a hunger to a passionate, burning desire. I wanted more and more of her, and before long, people started to notice the affection between us. We didn’t try to conceal it, not waiting for the sun to set. There was no shame in what we felt for each other. To add fuel to the fire, I would fight whoever refused to call her anything other than Mrs van Wyk. After all, she was my wife. In my heart, at least.” The earlier, determined look returned to his“Theface.rumours spread like wildfire, and soon enough I found myself being reprimanded by my parents for what they called my ‘despicable’ actions. But it seemed that the more they opposed our love, the stronger it grew. Even when they disowned me and asked me not to contact them anymore, I was a happy man, for happiness isn’t a product of earthly riches, but rather what one owns within. They could never take away my happiness … or so I thought.”

The one I loved was dead…!” A calmness seemed to descend on him despite the resignation in his eyes and voice.
Amidst all the hate, love can prosper, but it may leave lasting scars
and rare cycads. The hikers were escorted to their sleeping quarters for a quick rest. After supper, they gathered around the fireplace. Time for another story, and tonight Gerrit had the platform. Thus far he had been evading the attention, very conveniently not being close enough when the opportunity to tell stories arose. Tonight, however, he would have no choice but to tell the group about his scars.

The name “Sigurwana”, they were told, means “Close to Heaven” and after a long day of hiking, this could not be a more accurate description.
“We were stationed in Thembisa, on the East Rand, and we had to patrol the townships. Most days we would just walk around, watching people go about their everyday lives. But when the unrest flared up, the same peaceful neighbourhoods would become killing fields. I always liked people and enjoyed making conversation with the locals. Norbert has recorded 321 tree species in an area of only 2 000 hectares within the Soutpansberg Conservancy,” Edwin explained.

My friend played it down, but I felt an inexplicable unease creeping into my bones, so I headed out the door. The smoke was coming from the township, where my Azwi lived...” His eyes grew wider, and his breathing quickened. Tears gathered in his eyes.

She can also sing and is a lead soloist in the choir. To top it off she runs her own online jewellery store. “I find comfort in writing and the escape from the cruel world it provides. Writing takes me to a whole new world - a world of purity and bliss,” she says.

The group of hikers reluctantly left the spot at the stream where they had enjoyed lunch. Taki’s discovery of an historic glass bead made them more attentive of what they were stepping on. Suddenly they became aware of little lizards, the different types of shongololos (millipedes) and the vast array of spiders present in the area.

On Friday, 9 September, Ridgeway Preparatory School outside Louis Trichardt gave back to the community by providing bottled water and non-perishable items that they raised for Mandela Day. The record holder at the Louis Trichardt Parkrun, Livhalani Mudau, slashed anoth er two seconds off his time on Saturday to beat the record he set in 2019. He complet ed the five kilometres in 16 minutes and 16 seconds. Mudau was one of 41 runners and walkers who took part in the 76th Louis Trichardt Parkrun. The warmer weather not only influenced the times of the participants, but also a bigger turnout. Six newcomers registered for the event and completed their first Parkrun on Satur day. Parkruns are free, individually timed community events of 5km open to everyone and run entirely by community volunteers. The event starts at 08:00 during Septem ber, but from 1 October the starting time is 07:00.

Lede van die Hangklip (Hpk) en Soutpans berg (Spb) Posduifklubs se wedvlugseisoen vir 2022 het die afgelope naweek ten einde geloop, met die laaste middelpad-wedvlugte vanaf Theunissen. Ná afloop hiervan is Louis Jordaan, wat reeds gekroon is as die Noordstreek se langpadkampioen en die jaaroudkampioen-titel deel met Gerhardt Bezuidenhout (Hpk), ook aangewys as die streek se middelpadkampioen en algehele Noordstreek-kampioen.
Soos genoem tree Jordaan as Noord streek-kampioen uit die stryd met 3 107 punte. Tweede was Gerhardt Bezuidenhout met 3 054 punte, en in die derde plek was Mimosa Hokke met 2 959 punte.

Laerskool Louis Trichardt se eerste seunshokkiespan het die afgelope naweek deelgeneem aan die volgende ronde ligawedstryde by Curro Heuwelkruin in Polokwane. Hulle het eerste geëin dig op die punteleer nadat hulle Saterdag drie wedstryd gespeel het, waarvan hulle twee gewen en een gelykop gespeel het. Daardeur dring die span direk deur na die semi-finale ronde van die provinsiale liga. Die span bestaan uit (voor, van links na regs) Hardus Janse van Rensburg, Shane Nkuna, Leander Kotzee, Francois Nel, Liam Van den Berg, Dylen Maynier en Qürein Straube. Slegs vyf van die span se 10 kolwers kon lopies aanteken, met dubbelsyfers deur Conrad Madisha (20), Philip Blom (12) en Justice Tshipetame. Die laaste paaltjie het geval op 75 lopies, wat aan Jolly XI ‘n 229 lopies oorwinning besorg het.
Dubbele terugslag vir Strikers en nog ‘n groot nederlaag vir Sunflowers
Vir Jolly XI het boulers Naweed Jolly 3/11/3, Hussain Bapu 2/13/3, Idris Diwan 2/12/2, Fayaz Patel 1/10/2 en Suffiyan Dalla 1/0/0.2 ingeoes.
Die wenners van die liga, die Falcons, met die span bestaande uit (van links na regs) Werner Sieburg (nommer 2), Ronel Welman (nommer 3) en Piet Grobler (nommer 1). Die Eagles-span, wat tweede geëindig het, se span het bestaan uit Simon Tattersall (nommer 1), Pieter Veldman (nommer 2) en Louise Lordan in die 2de plek. Vir die Strikers kon Shannon Venter twee paaltjies plattrek vir die verlies van 24 lopies in twee beurte (2/24/2). Johan van Rooyen het 1/31/3 en Riaan Hamman 1/18/2 geneem.
Vir die Vikings het bouler Morné Olwage 2/12/4 platgetrek, terwyl Pharth Patel 2/16/2 en Shameel Patel 2/11/2 geneem het. Leon Furstenburg kon 1/17/2 en Gysbert Guillaume 1/10/2
Die streek se 4x4-manne en -vroue het Saterdag, 10 September, weer lekker “gespeel” tydens die Leeudraai Safari’s Limpopo 4x4-uitdaging in die Limpoporivier (Malalasdrift). Die algehele wenners was Kobus en Christa Otto. Vir hul moeite wen hulle onder andere ‘n R10 000 geskenkbewys van Hankook. Van links na regs staan Jaco van Rooyen (Hankook) Kobus en Christa en Teresa Vollgraaff (organiseerder van Leeudraai Safari’s). In die tweede plek was Stefan Swanepoel. Die Strikers krieketspan het ‘n moeilike naweek agter die rug, met twee nederlae teen onderskeidelik die NTT Toyota Vikings op Saterdag en Limpopo Dairy op Sondag in die volgende ronde wedstryde van die Louis Trichardt Krieketklub se 20-beurt liga.

Vir die Strikers het openingskolwer Dirk van den Berg dapper probeer met 36 lopies, wat ses viere ingesluit het. Naas hom kon slegs JP Coetzee (15), Johan van Rooyen (27) en Fahaan Khosa dubbelsyfers aanteken. Die span is in die
Limpopo het Gerrie Oelofse 3/10/3. Vimal Shah 1/14/2, Rikus Smit 1/10/2, AJ Fourie 1/11/2, Christiaan Barnard 1/15/3, TE Smit 1/15/2 en Christian Mkhansi 1/3/0.5 geneem.
In die ander wedstryd wat Sondag beslis is, het Jolly XI korte mette gemaak met die Sunflowers van LMB Makhado.
Jolly XI het ingegaan om eerste te kolf en 304 lopies vir die verlies van slegs drie plaatjies in hulle 20 beurte aangeteken, danksy ‘n mooi 103 lopies van kolwer Suffiyan Dalla van 48 balle af, wat ingesluit het 10 viere en vyf sesse. Sahil Patel het 90 lopies van 37 balle af gemoker, wat ingesluit het vier viere en nege sesse, terwyl Amir Bux Saif ‘n vinnige 43 lopies van sleg 13 balle en Adil Bhayati 31 lopies geslaan het.
Hoërskool Louis Trichardt se Sewes-rugbyseuns het die afgelope naweek weer aan ‘n Sewes-toernooi deelgeneem by Hoërskool Merensky in Tzaneen. Die o.15 span het Hoërskool Merensky B 26-0 en Hoërskool Ben Viljoen 21-12 geklop. Hulle het egter hul kragmetings teen Hoërskool Frans du Toit 5-29 en Hoërskool Tom Naudé 36-5 verloor. In Saterdag se wedstryd het die NTT Toyota Vikings ingegaan om eerste te kolf en 182 lopies vir die verlies van slegs vier paaltjies in hulle kolfbeurt aangeteken. Feitlik al die Vikings-kolwers het dubbelsyfers aangeteken, insluitend ‘n mooi 49 lopies vanaf 31 balle deur openingskolwer Gysbert Guillaume, met sy kolfbeurt wat nege viere ingesluit het. Hy is goed ondersteun deur Leon Furstenburg (38 lopies), Morne Olwage (21 lopies), Christo Gerber (20 lopies n.u.n.) en Waldo van Deemter (18 lopies n.u.n.).
Sondaginoes.het die Strikers Limpopo Dairy te staan gekom, met Limpopo wat eerste ingegaan het om te kolf. Hulle het ‘n mooi teiken van 219 lopies vir die verlies van vier paaltjies in hulle 20 beurte aangeteken, was danksy ‘n skitterende kolfbeurt van 138 lopies (nie uit nie) van slegs 64 balle af deur openingskolwer Leon Olwage. Sy beurt het ingesluit 11 viere en 11 sesse. Nog dubbelsyfer-bydraes met die kolf is gelewer deur AJ Fourie (19), Dewald Joubert (26) en Nimesh Watekar (16).
Met so ‘n telling was al die Sunflowers se boulers duur gewees. Philip Blom het 1/66/4 en Thabo Monyela 1/50/4 afgestaan.
Die Strikers se kolfbeurt het bietjie stadig en wankelrig begin, met die eerste drie plaatjies plat met die telling op 45 lopies. ‘n Vierde-paaltjie vennootskap van 46 lopies het die Strikers se telling na 91 vir vier geneem, waarna die volgende vier paaltjies geval het vir slegs ‘n addisionele 20 lopies. Strikers se laaste bal is geboul met die telling op 133 vir agt paaltjies wat aan die Vikings ‘n 49-lopie oorwinnings besorg het. Die enigste kolwers van Strikers wat dubbelsyfers kon aanteken was Paulo Piorek (19), Riaan Gerber (21), Riaan Hamman (21) en Adriaan van Zyl (16).
