This month we put a lot of focus on our women, to make it even better, we hook up with one of the country’s finest, yummiest and youngest female Dj’s who goes on stage by the name of DJ Lee Smallz. She is indeed a bomb which comes in a small package. Ladies and gentleman let’s get down and scrutinize this explosive package!

Hi Lerato and welcome to Makoya Mag... * It’s woman’s month and how do you define it?

Woman’s day or rather month to me is all about celebrating & recognizing the women in our lives: their hard work, accomplishments & hardships that they’ve been through, and negating the stereotypical perception that the world has about us women. * As a woman how do you make sure you always stay on point during your set?

I do not think because I’m a woman that my djing skill should be any less…It all has to do with learning to master your skill and knowing your music. In that way you get to build your confidence…As clichéd as it might sound but FOCUS & PRACTICE is all it takes. * Does your career have anything to do with celebrating our diversity as a woman?

I love music and I believe music is HUGE… Music is a big part of me and has inspired me to be that source of diversity and inspiration for other female artists out there.

I think little attention is given to women in the Arts and we need more female artists to go out there and be seen….There’s so much talent out there, it needs to be recognised hey…

* How do you define Lerato and Dj Lee Smallz?

Errrr, okay, I do not think there’s much of a difference between Lerato & Dj Lee Smallz, except the craziness & energy Dj Lee Smallz infuses when she’s on stage.

Otherwise I’m just a down to earth (people tend to confuse that with arrogance & think that I’m full of myself lol), open minded being who’s in-love with creativeness and just likes to have fun and meet people…I’m a thinker and at times I get so fascinated by life so much to a point whereby I get afraid to close my eyes & just jump to the endless possibilities of life, because I’m scared of the unknown & being hurt, but I push myself & strive for the best. * Apart from being a Dj what other commitments do you have?

I’m an IT person (programmer) and also do music production (not my strongest point, but I’m learning). So you must watch the space, Lee Smallz promises to leave a legacy in the music industry. * Your fans liked you during Makhado Annual Show 2012, any secret recipe to be a better Dj? And I also appreciate the love I always receive from Limpopo, it’s amazing, the support is so immense! My secret? But it’s a secret like you say so I’m not supposed to tell lol..Argh you know what? I have learned that the energy you possess and stage presence during your set transfers to your crowd so you should learn to bring out that positive energy in you together with the skill…I won’t lie I always get nervous before my sets (like any other performer) but I try to convert that natural negative energy into positive energy that will captivate my crowd, so I just

I have been wondering what the fashion trends will be, for the red carpet... and wouldn’t you know, it is GOLD!!

Gold dresses, gold shoes, gold accessories, you name it!

Now for some of you, this is an opportunity to SHINE your good assets whenever you go out to a function or party, but there is a bad side to this as well.

You wouldn’t want to step out of your house and blind the sun, thus creating a tragic natural disaster.

Or as soon as you enter the party, everyone dives for their sunglasses.

No one will be seeing you as a person but only some shiny orb harassing their atmosphere.

The trick is, if you decide on wearing a sexy gold dress, then accessorize it with a nice neutral/plain belt. Also, make sure your clutch (or small purse) and shoes are also in a neutral/plain colour. Also, it is not always necessary to wear big earrings with this specific outfit. Small studs will do, or none at all will also be fine.

If your’e wearing a sexy little black dress, then this will be the opportune time to get yourself a beautiful golden clutch, or a pair of glittery heels will

round off your outfit beautifully! If you’ve decided on a two piece (pant/ skirt and top) then pick one of the pieces to be your glitter magnet.

Now, I have to address a serious problem amongst the ladies… and that is the three week nail polish left over’s on their finger nails. You know what I’m talking about.

Where you, for some reason thought it is acceptable (or no one will notice),to not remove chipped nail polish from your nails with proper nail polish remover, but instead decided to be hacking at your nails with your teeth. When ever I see this phenomenon, I get the idea, that the person doesn’t care about herself, that she’s lazy. It doesn’t matter what your job description is, you still have to look at these things. It’s not for other people that you do this, it is for yourself. Wouldn’t you feel better, if your hands looked like you just had them done or they were looked after with love and care all the time? If the polish starts chipping, rather re-touch with the same colour, or just remove it entirely.

AND stop chewing your nails! IT’S A BAD HABBIT! Nail files are there for a reason:0) You know I love you all my Babies, and I say these things ‘cos I care.

* Background: I was born in Nzhelele, schooled at Kokwane primary school and Patrick Ramaano Secondary school. I studied futher with Innovation Business College, where I obtained a diploma in Information Technology in 1999. * About work: In 2000, I worked in a clothing shop as a temporary worker, then moved to a furniture shop, also as a temporary worker. Then a clothing shop here in town employed me permanently. I worked for 8 months, resigned for a post at a bank and have thus spent 8 years of my life in the banking world. I officially resigned in 2010, to start my own business. * About the business: I started operating in January 2011 till date. I am a farmer, specialising in fresh chicken. We grow them from day 1 up to 16 weeks, and sell them live or slaughtered. * Why farming: I realised that people generally prefer fresh chickens to frozen ones. I took time to study the chicken farming market and placed myself where there was a great need. Farming is a business that of needed as it deals with food, and the government has opportunities for those interested in farming. * Any culture shocks, from being a bank branch administrator to becoming a farmer: LOL- yaaa two different smells. I still maintain my heels, nails and hair like a lady, but when its time for boots work suit and gloves, I am also good at that..

I am very happy to have found my passion and freedom. The rest is for me to grow and see our cooperative supplying nationally. * Word of encouragement to youth: When it comes to business, ask God what your calling is. Do not undermine any job, what comes as an idea should not be taken for granted, for it can be your answer to your finances. Being self employed needs someone who has good communication skills, you need to be friendly and should never undermine anyone.

Ke Phomelelo ke Mamampi ke Ngwatladi, ke phomeletse go boMmamogashwa bao ba isago batho bo ya batho. I am a poet, a mother to Mukona and Gaositwe, and a wife to Segopotso Moshapo.

That’s how the young published poet described herself when asked who she was, during the Polokwane Literary Festival a fortnight ago.

“I write because words cannot leave me alone, I write because I can not write,” she says, somehow confusing yours truly all the same. Perhaps that’s how poets are or should be, dribbling us with oxymoron of the poetry of words and expression. Enjoyment of words emanates from new expressions.

Born Phomelelo Machika, in the village of Phaahla Mmadikwe in Limpopo province, she fell in love with poetry and went on to recite her poetry across the country endearing herself to the hearts of those who borrowed her listening ears.

This author of a Sepedi poetry collection aptly titled Peu tsa Tokologo, holds a Bachelor in Physiotherapy and a Masters in Business Administration

The heart that loved

She heard nothing from Pascal, neither a letter nor greetings from Pascal’s parents.

Ruke always watched through the window hoping to see the appearance of the man she loved. Every car engine kept her alert as she thought it could be Pascal’s parents.

A knock on the door brought Ruke sharply out of her reverie. She walked towards the door, to find that it was Lucy, one of her friends who used to mock her. She thought of the mocking and the lonely life she had been living since - Continues from previous edition ... she came back to the village. Lucy‘s appearance brought back the pain in Pascal decided to go abroad again, Ruke’s heart. without bidding goodbye to Ruke.

“Get out!” Ruke shouted. She pushed Lucy to the door but Lucy kneeled down begging for forgiveness. “I want peace Ruke, I am three months pregnant with Pascal’s child, please forgive me,” Lucy cried.

A car stopped near the gate, some unexpected visitors stepped out of the car. Ruke wiped her tears and a smile quickly covered her face. “Pascal’s parents again in my life” she said. She was surprised because they were empty handed and hadn’t come in a long time.

She led them into the house, prepared tea for them with her mother’s home baked cake. Ruke was expecting good news but unfortunately they brought bad news.

(MBA). She writes in both Sepedi and English. To her, and with her, education has an open but deeper meaning to life. She affirms that education gives people perspective, allows them to read and write. “This allows us to travel the world, sit with kings and queens through the books we read,” she adds.

In 2006, University of Kwazulu-Natal Press selected a few of her poems and published them in an anthology of poetry by women titled Basadzi Voices.

Surely, the star of Phomelelo continued to rise.

“Poetry is a necessary curse, it is my grandmother’s rendition of the events of that day, when God made man and declared it is beautiful!” she declares.

When asked what it is that she does apart from writing, she speaks in philosophical terms. “They say passion does not pay, my kids have to go to bed full, so she works in the corporate world,” she answers.

She holds the philosophical view that, as she quotes Frantz Fannon, “when you speak a language you appropriate it’s culture.”

Now she says, leave it to the people to interpret, as we have gained a complex about speaking Tshivenda, XiTsonga and Sepedi.

Phomelelo is married in Muduluni in the Kutama area, and is is blessed with two kids, Mukona and Gaositwe.

Music Reviews * By Ngerezah Artist: Donald Single : Denial Rating : 4/5 He is one of the finest talents in the land to date.

Although it took me a while to really see what this ladies man is capable of doing, I think I was in denial.

The brand new one Denial is more than just any ordinary artists could offer. He gave the velvet vocals with a strong charmer boy’s message, any girl simply can’t resist. For those who thought Micasa had no competition, and for the record, I can recommend this super young talented guru for any gig across the globe.

The track “I Deserve” became a hit across the country and still is, but Denial is something else!

Artist : David Mmbi Album : Lushie lwonaka Rating : 5/5 “Mmwaa, ndini funa badi” it’s a hit across the country and I think he is not going to stop anytime soon.

David Mmbi aka “Nese la Tshilidzini” as known by most of his fans, dropped a bomb shell that no one imagined. One thing about good music is you hear about it before you actually hear it.

The moment I heard about it never disappointed. The Muso is heavenly crafted and the world is never going to stop for him. I like tracks such as “A songo nula” and “Ndimu funa badi” to mention a few.

I like this guy and he made me proud to be Venda!
