Mining companies continue their onslaught on the Soutpansberg regions’s rich coal fields

The report further indicates that the Berenice project has 1.3 billion tonnes in coal-deposit resources. Universal said that their concept study had confirmed that the project “can support a 10 million tonne per annum open-cut operation in excess of 25 years.”

Somerville’s first exploration drilling is expected to start towards the last quarter of this year. According to Universal, they are looking at an excess of 1 billion tonnes of coking coal resource that is mainly stretched over three coal seams. If Universal is granted mining right licences, they have proposed open-cast mining to extract the coal.

At about the same time that Universal Coal made their announcement, Coal of India Limited (CIL)

also announced their intention to acquire mines in the Limpopo Valley by forming a subsidiary company in South Africa.

Business LIVE reported last week that CIL announced in a bid document that they were busy signing an agreement with the Limpopo Province to “identify and develop coal mines.” CIL, which is state-owned, is one of the world’s largest coal miners. (Contd on P2)

The Soutpansberg-region’s future looks black coal black, that is, as mining companies continue their onslaught on the area’s rich coal fields.

In August of last year, it became known that yet another coal mining company, other than Coal of Africa Limited (CoAL), is showing interest in the Limpopo Valley’s coal fields. Universal Coal, an emerging thermal coal-production and -development company, earmarked thousands of hectares for exploration drilling.

Universal has two projects, namely Berenice and Somerville. The Berenice coking coal project is situated 90km southwest of Musina, close to CoAL’s Vele mine and Mapungubwe World Heritage Site.

Somerville, on the other hand, is located near the northern border of Botswana, stretching over six farms. Some of these farms are situated in the Vhembe Game Reserve.

On 10 August, Univer sal announced in their Cash Flow Report that an environmental risk assessment, A snapshot of what will be left of the Soutpansberg with regard to present and planned mining operations. No wonder conservationists are up in arms. Numerous organigeotechnical study and sations have joined the fight to try and stop or reduce the impact of mining in the area.

For this venture, CIL has earmarked 60 billion rupees (U$1.1 billion). Where this proposed mine would be situated, could not be determined by the time of going to press. However, India is suffering from massive power outages, with some of its electricity plants that are idle as a result of fuel shortages.

Then there is the junior Canadian mining company, Diamcor Mining Incorporated, who said last Wednesday that it had started commissioning a processing plant at its KroneEndora project, directly next to De Beers’ Venetia Mine.

They announced their intention to mine diamonds here at the beginning of the year.

The purpose of this 200-tonne-

per-hour modular processing plant, according to Diamcor, is to enable the company to move to trial mining. This will eventually lead to a production rate “of 10 000 carats within a year of starting the project”.

“Along with allowing for the testing and commissioning of the plant, these exercises are aimed at recovering an initial quantity of rough diamonds suitable for preliminary sorting

by Diamcor and its strategic alliance partner Tiffany & Co, to assist the company to establish a new and current average dollar-per-carat estimate for the project’s rough diamonds,” Diamcor CEO Dean Taylor said in a statement. Tiffany & Co is a famous American company that manufatures expensive jewellery with which Diamcor already has a long-term alliance.

To enable Diamcor to construct their process plant, they had to, among other things, clear about two hectares for construction and the areas for the fresh water, waste and settling dams. They also drilled 558 targets holes, covering an area of approximately 400 hectares, for the completion of the recommended infill and extended drilling. Diamcor expects production levels of between 120 00 and 240 000 carats per year.

With all this mining planned for the Soutpansberg and its unique Bushveld landscapes and tranquillity, it is no wonder conservationists are up in arms.

Numerous organisations have joined the fight to try and stop or reduce the impact of mining in the area. Their fight is far from over as Government continues to approve mining rights.

Ek het vreeslik mooi gevra dat hulle die riool moet kom reg-

maak,” vertel tannie Marie. Intussen beloop haar telefoonkoste maklik meer as R200. Tannie Marie bel een dag, wag ‘n dag of twee en bel dan weer. So gaan dit vir twee of drie weke aan.

Police blamed, commander outraged A recent accident in Krogh Street in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) is blamed on the way police vehicles park in front of the Makhado police station.

When those involved in the accident met with the local station commander regarding the incident, they were allegedly met with severe aggressiveness.

On 31 July, a police van was parked illegally on a yellow line in front of the Spur on the corner with Landdros Street.

The 43-year-old Ms Salphina Mashimbyi drove down Landdros Street and stopped at the Krogh Street junction. Because of the police van obscuring her view, she inched forward into Krogh Street before turning right. The next moment, she collided into the 52-year-old Mr Japie van Staden’s vehicle.

On completion of their statements at the charge office in Krogh Street, they went to see station commander Colonel Francois Ramovha to enquire whether anything could be done about the way the police vehicles park.

Mashimbyi and Van Standen said they politely greeted Ramovha and were shown to their seats.

“The moment I mentioned the parking of the police vehicles, it was as if someone had flipped a switch and the station commander carried on in a most aggressive way. He said I was disrespectful,” Van Staden said.

“The station commander was very, very rude.

He said that the government had provided the police with the parking and that they would park there, whether we liked it or not,” Mashimbyi added. She said that she observed Van Staden as a kind person.

Van Staden and Mashimbyi both said that the station commander accused Van Staden of being rude. “I saw that we were getting nowhere and got up to leave, which was when he got more agitated and shouted all the more,” Van Staden said.

Mashimbyi said that she stayed behind.

“Ramovha said ‘I hate his attitude’. I told him if Mr Van Staden had approached you wrongly, just forgive him. He opened the window looking down on the street and at that point, another police van parked wrongly. I told him it was just by the grace of God that people passed here every day without an accident. Then he calmed down,” Mashimbyi said.

“All I wanted from Ramovha was to say that they would try and do something about their parking problem. Somebody might get killed in an accident,” Van Staden said.

The way in which police vehicles park and the inadequate parking space in that area has been reported on in the Zoutpansberger numerous times.

A written response was requested from the local police spokesperson, Capt Maano Sadiki, both regarding the behaviour of the station commander and the police vehicle parking problem. On Tuesday, Sadiki said telephonically that the police would comply with the request in due course. Later on the same day, Van Staden got a call from Col Ramovha.

“He said that I had been rude and that my intention was to get him to pay for the damage.

I suppose the tactic was to get me agitated, but fortunately I did not fall into that trap. I feel that a station commander has the safety of the town in his hands, so to speak, and should act responsibly,” Van Staden said.

“All I wanted from Ramovha was to say that they would try and do something about their parking problem.

In the same breath, they warned that AfriForum is known for acting legally, acting roughly and getting results.

“There is no way we can grow this town if we don’t work together. I am more than happy to work with those who work toward the building of this town. It is part of my dream to come and stay here,” Mutavhatsindi said.

On a more serious note, AfriForum expressed their dismay with the many unfinished municipal projects in town. “A visible start must be made with the abandoned projects, such as the streets. Don’t we teach our children not to leave their jobs half done?” Schultz asked. He also referred to the accident on the corner of Breda and Munnik Street, where Ms Esther Nel sustained serious injuries. The accident occurred mainly because the street was left unmarked. The mayor took note and said that in Tshikota he had literally painted streets himself.

As for AfriForum’s looming legal action against the mu-

nicipality regarding the town’s water crisis, Mutavhatsindi said that he had not yet read the letter from AfriForum’s attorneys but glanced through it. The letter, among others, state that the municipality has failed manifestly in achieving the basic legal requirements in respect of water supply.

“We hereby request the municipality to furnish us, in writing, with sustainable and feasible solutions to rectify the water crisis,” the letter states. The due date for the municipality’s reply was 3 August. The AfriForum lawyers met on 7 August on the content of the answer and said that it was not acceptable. They are still awaiting the answer of the Vhembe District Municipality, which had until 9 August to respond. After that date, the lawyers will announce their way forward and the reasons for their actions. At this stage, it would seem that the dance between AfriForum and the municipality is still on, but on the legal front the fight may soon commence.

Ridgeway Independent School outside Makhado (Louis Trichardt) was grateful when Mr Ragimana of the Makhado Municipality pitched up on 2 August to grade the dirt road to the school. They are all the more thankful for the favour, since the road does not actually fall under the local municipality. The condition of the road has caused a couple of accidents and tarring the road would be the ideal.

Die beeld wat uitstraal is dié van ‘n erg-verwaarloosde, kaalvoet kind wat sê hy’s honger. Dit is moeilik vir ‘n ordentlike mens om nie vir hom jammer te wees nie. Die maklike uitweg is om met ‘n gedeelte van die kleingeld in jou sak jou gemoedsvrede te probeer terugkoop deur vir hom ‘n geldjie in die hand te stop ... maar dan kom pla die lastige vrae: “Help ek regtig? Genoeg?

Te veel? Verkeerd? Hoe dan eintlik?”

Die algemene raad is: Moenie vir hom geld gee nie. As iemand honger is, gee hom iets te ete.

Die waarskuwing teen die gee van geld op straat gaan oor die wesenlike gevaar dat die geld dalk nie vir kos nie, maar vir een of ander skadelike gewoonte mis­b ruik gaan word. All funds generated this year will be donated to the local Christian Social Service (CSR) to help families in need. Die kompetisie word deur die NG Kerk Soutpansberggemeente aangebied, in samewerking met Nada’s Ark veeartsenydienste. Dit word ook nie net beperk tot honde nie en selfs die troeteldiere met vere kan saamgebring word.

Die beoordeling om die mooiste kat te vind, word met behulp van foto’s gedoen. Netjiese, geblokte of gelamineerde foto’s van die katte moet voor 28 Augustus ingehandig word by die kerkkantoor of by Nada’s Ark. Die Lentefees vind op 1 September plaas in die parkie oorkant OK Grocer. Die troeteldiere sal vanaf 14:00 beoordeel word en eienaars kan hul mooiste diere in verskeie kategorieë inskryf. Senior traffic boss finally granted bail after spending two weeks behind bars The long walk to freedom for Thulamela traffic boss Thilivhali Mulaudzi finally came to an end when he was released on bail. He spent almost two weeks in the cells.

Mulaudzi (48), of Shayandima, was released on R20 000 in the Magistrate’s Court in Thohoyandou last Wednesday. He stands accused of having committed 1 640 criminal acts - 820 of fraud and

a further 820 charges involving contraventions of the National Road Traffic Act. He is said to have authored his own misfortune when he wanted to be admitted as an advocate and was told that he could not as he had pending cases against him. After enquiring about these cases from the police, they subsequently arrested him.

He was held in the cells since his arrest on 30

July. He launched a bail application the following day, but his application was characterised by postponements, until he was granted bail on Wednesday. The court was filled to capacity, with fellow church members, family and friends who came to offer support.

Earlier on during the application, the attorney for the defence, Adv Tumi Mokoena, had asked the

Louis Trichardt High School performed exceptionally well in the Road Safety Debate held on 11 August in Thohoyandou. Fifty participants competed to be included in the five-member Vhembe team and Triegie debaters were ranked as the first four. In front is Mashudu Demana (fourth position). In the middle, from left to right, are Surprise Manyayi (first position) and Candy Musekene (third position). At the back is Richmond Mpephu (second position). The fifth member of the regional team is from Mbilwi Secondary School. The team will participate in the provincial round on 25 August in Polokwane.

Right:Maanda Pha­ thela, Grade 9-learner of Louis Trichardt High School, was selected as the best speaker of the day at the Polokwane Debating Society debate against Motse Maria on 2 August in the Polokwane Town Library. The motion of the Louis Trichardt debating team was “The myth of Nelson Mandela is doing more harm than good” and they won convincingly.

“Grondliggend aan al die probleme staan magsmisbruik en kultuur”

een water by die Louis Trichardt Hospitaal? Dan het die munisipale woordvoerder nog die vermetelheid om in ’n retoriese verklaring te sê: “Ons was nie daarvan bewus nie.

As ons daarvan bewus word tree ons dadelik op.”

Nou ja, as is verbrande hout en die Makhado Munisipaliteit weet in elk geval net nooit niks. In daardie gebou weet die linkerhand nie wat die regterhand doen nie. Dit is ‘n geval van elke brommer op sy eie mishoop. Die optrede van die munisipaliteit kom neer op ‘n ernstige skending van menseregte en ‘n blatante oortreding van die Grondwet. Die munisipale bestuur en Raad behoort tot in die hoogste hof gejaag word soos wat tans in Carolina gebeur.

Ongelukkig strek dié en soortgelyke probleme baie wyer as wat die oog kan sien. Ten spyte van baie praat is dienslewering deur die regering op alle vlakke, vanaf die hoogste gesag tot by die kleinste munisipaliteit besig om in snelrat agteruit te gaan. Die agteruitgang kan aan ’n verskeidenheid van faktore soos ’n gebrek aan bestuursvermoë, onkunde, korrupsie, kader aanstelling, selfverryking ensomeer toegeskryf word. Grondliggend aan hierdie toedrag van sake staan kultuur en mag.

Mag kan op verskeie maniere bekom en gebruik word om ander mense laer en selfs hoër in die rangorde mee te manipuleer of te ondermyn. Voorbeelde van sulke gevalle is legio in die daaglikse pers en elektroniese media en vier hoogty in die regerende party vanaf die jeugleiers tot by die partypresident.

Kultuur, aan die ander kant, is ’n diepgewortelde oorlewering, behorende-tot meganisme of instink wat oor eeue binne gemeenskappe en individue ontwikkel het. Hierdie gemeenskaplike kultuur reguleer die Brief

gemeenskap en individue se bestaan in terme van hulle daaglikse handel en wandel.

Dit is dan ook ‘n deeglik-te-boekgestaafde feit dat die inheemse bevolking oor die eeue heen ’n kultuur van onverdraagsaamheid teenoor ander etniese groepe, stamme en volke ontwikkel het. Vir hulle daaglikse bestaan is ’n verbruikersleefwyse gevolg (Chika Onyeani, 2000, Capitalist Nigger). Die omgewing waar hulle gevestig het, is geplunder tot daar niks oor is nie en dan is daar aanbeweeg na die volgende gebied waar die proses weer van vooraf begin is. In die moderne milieu van vandag vind hierdie verbruikersmentaliteit uiting in die plundering van die staatskas, bedrog ensomeer.

Op bladsy 121 van sy boek skryf Onyeani onder andere die volgende: “You see, I have lived in America for 32 years now. It is sickening listening to Blacks who are always telling you that they were the first to move into such and such neighborhood, ‘when the whites were still here. Now the community or city has gone to the dogs. Dirty streets, corrupt officials, more crimes, less services and more taxes … etc.’ We wear it as a badge of honor that we were the first to move into a ‘white neighborhood.’”

Dit is die realiteit van die SuidAfrika van vandag. Die eenvoudige waarheid is dat die huidige regering oor alle vlakke weens hulle kulturele agtergrond geen benul het van gesonde bestuur en regering nie.

Dit is dieselfde mag-kultuur van onderlinge onverdraagsaamheid wat manifesteer in die huidige regering se traak-my-nie-agtigheid teenoor die burgers van die land, ongeag kleur, geslag of ras. Dit is ’n wesenlike skending van u en my grondwetlike regte. (Brief verkort – Red)

Oom Steve het ‘n hartaanval gehad en is op 8 Augustus in Phalaborwa begrawe.

Oom Steve was 88 jaar oud en het definitief ‘n vol lewe gehad. Ongeveer drie jaar gelede het hy nog ‘n luiperd aangedurf en so onlangs as twee jaar gelede het hy ‘n groot motorfietsongeluk gehad.

Soutpansberg Distrik Landbouunie se voorsitter, Stephen Hoff-

man, het tydens verlede week se Algemene Raadsvergadering gesê: “Hy is ‘n legende in dié deel van die wêreld en ons is trots om te kan sê hy was deel van ons. Dit was ‘n voorreg om hom te kon ken en deel van ons span te hê.”

p 6 Augustus het ‘n gedeelte van ons plaas, Vygeboomsdrift, afgebrand. Die wind het nie juis gehelp nie en ons het gespook om die vuur onder beheer te bring.

Dankie vir die boere en gemeenskap van die omgewing wat so vinnig daar was en gehelp het om die vuur te blus, insluitend Fritz Ahrens, Jacques Bouwer, Jan Louw, Wessel Cronjé, Doors le Roux, Molozi Trust, Bedrock, Johan van Eeden en ons bure, Hannes en Fred Badenhorst en Jannie Marais.

Dit is onmoontlik om almal by naam te bedank – daar was waarlik

net te veel mense, maar weet dat ons elkeen van julle raakgesien het en waardering het vir julle opoffering, hulp en ondersteuning. ‘n Mens het nie altyd woorde om te beskryf presies hoe dankbaar ons is nie. Ons het weereens beleef dat daar nog mense is wat werklik vir hulle medemens omgee.

Bowenal, ons dank aan ons Hemelse Vader wat alles beskik en mooi laat verloop het sonder enige lewensverlies en dat ons nie groter skade gely het nie.

ns lewe in ‘n wêreld vol lyding en beproewing. Die lewe is veral moeilik vir ‘n wedergebore kind van God om twee redes. Eerstens, waar ‘n Christen hom teen die wêreld en sonde verset moet hy dikwels vervolging verduur en skade ly, omdat hy nie met die wêreld wil saamgaan nie. Die ander rede is dat die Vader ons tugtig as deel van ons opvoeding. Dikwels word Christene, soos die Hebreërs, moedeloos as gevolg van God se tugtiging. Ons behoort dit egter te verwelkom as ‘n teken van God se Vaderliefde en Sy manier om ons heilig te laat lewe.

In Hebreërs 12:7-10 word drie heerlike gedagtes met ons gedeel: 1) Vers 7: “Is daar miskien ‘n kind wat nie deur sy vader getug word nie?” Dit is deel van die opvoeding en hou seën in vir die kind. Daarom moet ons as kinders van God leer om alle tug van Hom as ‘n teken van Sy Vaderliefde en sorg vir ons te beskou.

2) Die tweede gedagte is vers 9. Elke beproewing of stryd is deur God beskik om ons aan Hom te onderwerp asook die erkenning van Sy reg op my as Sy kind.

Science Week

Thousands benefit from Science Week National Science Week, with a few extra days added on by the Soutpansberg Astronomy Club (SAC), has come to an end.

This initiative by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) was a countrywide celebration of science, involving businesses, universities, science centres, schools and astronomy clubs, as well as other stakeholders.

The South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA) was assigned to coordinate this effort to promote public awareness of science, engineering and technology (SET), as well as stimulating and increasing the interest of SET among learners, educators and the general public at various venues in all nine the provinces.

Over a 12-day period, the SAC visited various schools and public areas in the region. Some of these were Ridgeway College, Lemana High School, Makhado Comprehensive, Kutuma High School, Vivo CVO, Dendron Primary, Louis Trichardt Primary and Mitchell House. Public astronomy venues included OK Grocer, Makhado Crossing, Letaba Expo, Savannah Mall, Sterkloop and Mall of the North.

Outreach activities included astronomy presentations on the square kilometre array (SKA) radio telescope, the landing of Curiosity on Mars, building of southern-star wheels, solar and night-sky viewing, and many others. Handout material, courtesy of SAASTA, the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) and the SAC, consisted of astronomy-related posters and information. Science teachers at the various schools were presented with Galileoscopes for use by budding scientists in their classes. The SAC thanked all those who assisted with sponsorships, as well as promoting National

Science Week, including Leach Printers, Pick ‘n Pay (Makhado Crossing), René van der Merwe (Mall of the North), Annabel Roberts (Mitchell House), Andries Van Zyl (Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror and associated newspapers), Fanie Pretorius (Makhado Crossing), Melissa Strydom (Letaba Expo), Savannah Mall, as well as all the enthusiastic educators, learners and members of the general public. “A special thank you to my son, James Coronaios, for assisting during all the events,” said organiser Mr Kos Coronaios.

SAC alone reached a few thousand people (the majority of whom are school learners) and this was mirrored across all nine provinces of South Africa.

Early reports show that tens of thousands of people who had never had the opportunity to be exposed to astronomy and the wonders of the universe had their interest piqued by this huge outreach event.

CP van Wyk (regs) beklink weereens ‘n algehele eersteplek in ‘n wentyd van 02:11:05. Spanmaat Marco Roets (links) beïndruk ook deur ‘n algehele derdeplek los te ry in 02:18:53.
