By Elmon Tshikhudo Scores of villagers from Vhembe and other parts of Limpopo were left homeless and stranded after a heavy storm left a trail of destruction over the weekend.

By Monday, in Vhembe alone, about 320 households were confirmed as having been affected. At the time of our going to press, disaster teams from Vhembe and Thulamela and a team from the Red Cross were still busy assessing the situation and the possibility was high that the number of those affected could rise.

In Vhembe, the villages of Botsoleni, Maphophe and Makahlule were the hardest hit. Churches, schools and houses had their roofs blown away during the storms.

One of the affected family is the Sithole family of Maphophe in Malamulele. Mr Meshack Sithole, who is still nursing

injuries in hospital after being hit by corrugated iron, said life would never be the same for him.

“I saved for years to build my dream house, but I saw my dream crumbling down in the wink of an eye,” said Sithole.

He is a married father of three children and said they were outside the house when the storm and heavy wind started.

They went into the house, thinking that it would subside, but it became worse and the wind “started to pull the roofing out”.

He said they took the children to a neigbour for safety and he and his wife returned to the house. “While inside the house, we could sense danger and we decided to go outside, but I was struck by corrugated iron,” said Sithole.

Another family that was hard hit is the Chauke family of Botsoleni. Ms Nomia Chauke (43) was killed after being struck by lightning and her children are now

facing an uncertain future. She was struck by lightning while coming from fetching firewood.

In another lightning tragedy the same day, the 24-year-old Constance Novela of Mphambo also died after being struck by lightning, while sitting with her husband and her one-year-old baby.

The head of the disaster committee in the Thulamela Municipality, Mr Elias Chavalala, who accompanied the acting executive mayor, Cllr Lucas Manyuwa, on a tour to the affected area, said several people were injured, seven churches were damaged while 307 houses were damaged during the storm.

Manyuha said they would approach the province and request that the area be declared a disaster area. He said they had already handed over tents and food parcels to the affected and would continue to assist the affected families.

Ms Tinyiko Maluleke of Maphophe was one of the unlucky residents who found herself without shelter after the disaster. Here, officials from Thulamela, Cllr Rosinah Maluleke and Cllr Shadrack Maluleke, are asssesing the damage.

Fire causes extensive damage at filling station A Vhembe businessman is still counting his losses, after a mysterious fire torched a vehicle at his business before destroying a petrol pump at his filling station.

The fire burnt a client’s car and a pump, but it is still a miracle that the other fully loaded petrol tanks did not explode. The incident happened on Saturday.

Businessman Silas Rashaka, who owns Total Hollywood Motors in Thohoyandou, said he sees the hand of God and His angels protecting his business and staff from what could have been a major catastrophe.

“I was coming from a funeral at nearby Lwamondo when I received a call that my business was on fire. As my wife was driving, I closed my eyes and started praying that God would protect the property,” said Rashaka.

He said the tanks were loaded with many thousands of litres of petrol and he knew that if they exploded, many people would lose their lives. “So many things came to my mind, but I told myself that I had to seek protection from God. I prayed for a long time, and when I reached the garage, the fire was still raging,” he said.

He said people were running away, fearing that it could explode, but there was a certain Mr Netshimbupfe from the Vhembe Fire Services who risked his life and extinguished the fire before it could spread all over the premises. “I thank God for having saved my business and my

staff. I suffered damage worth nearly R600 000, but I think it is minimal compared to what would have happened, had the whole business caught fire,” he said.

Ms Maria Rashaka, a manager at the filling station, said they were

busy assisting clients at about 13:00 when a motorist arrived in an old model BMW. “The man opened the bonnet of his car and it seems he was trying to fix a problem when, all of a sudden, a fire broke out,” she said.

Education rights of migrant workers in the spotlight The director of the Centre for Educational Rights and Transformation at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), Mr Solly Vally, has called for better access to education for migrant children in South Africa.

Vally was speaking during a workshop on the research project about the educational rights of migrant learners, held at the University of Venda’s Art Gallery in Thohoyandou last weekend.

He said the workshop also aimed to identify blockages and barriers that prevent access to education for migrant learners in the country. They also discussed a a joint plan of action to ensure that migrant children know and realise their rights to education.

The workshop, a joint venture between the University of Venda, UJ and Save the Children in Limpopo, was attended by government officials, educators and NGOs. “We have been running the workshops in the Western Cape, Gauteng and Limpopo during the past year, visiting various schools with migrant learners. It has been a useful interaction between migrant or-

ganisations, pupils and South African state officials. There are many myths concern migrants and the workshop corrects some of these misconceptions,” said Vally.

He added that the workshop also heard terrible stories from refugees and migrant people, who often flee their countries after hardship there.

He also mentioned that plans were at an advanced stage to host a national conference aimed at addressing the issue of migrant people, refugees, migrant children and how to address their handicaps.

According to Ms Rachel Chininga of the Centre for Positive Care in Sibasa, of the 18 000 children in their database, only 0.5% are migrant children and she urged relevant stakeholders to register more migrant children.

“We have organised mini-libraries, so that young migrant children can read and research some learning projects. Since 2007, we have reunited some of the migrant children with their parents, as our organization takes care of migrant children,” said Chininga.

The 30-year-old Brighton Chauke is still behind bars and will remain there.

Chauke, who until his eventual capture was one of the Soutpansberg’s most wanted criminals, appeared in the Louis Trichardt Regional Court on Monday.

For almost a year, Chauke evaded arrest after he managed to escape from the police’s holding cells in Musina in October 2010.

At the time of his escape he, along with his brother Shorty, was awaiting trial for a murder case in Musina, as well as a spate of armed robberies in Louis Trichardt. Shorty (41) has since been sentenced to 45 years imprisonment on the armed robbery charges.

Since his arrest, Chauke has been positively connected to a spate of violent armed robberies, housebreakings and attempted murders. The nearfatal attack on Messrs Jan Louw (49) and Ferdie Landman (19) on 28 May of last year is included among these attacks.

It has also come to light that Chauke has indeed been positively connected to the murder of the 51-year-old Mr Eric Neshunzhi on the farm Goedehoop on July 1.

During Monday’s appearance, Chauke appeared on the three charges of armed robbery on which his brother had been convicted.

These charges relate to three robberies in April 2009 at three different businesses in Louis Trichardt. Of these, one was caught on security cameras.

The State asked for a provisional trial date on Monday, in order to finalise all the charges against Brighton. An additional ten charges could be added to the current charges.

Brighton will appear in court again on 6 March.

Accident

Five identified Police were able to identify five of the 10 victims who died in last week’s horror crash along the N1 south of Louis Trichardt.

The accident occurred near Bandelierkop last Tuesday.

A minibus taxi carrying passengers to Zimbabwe collided with a truck.

The five passengers were identified with the help of their family as Thulani Thusi, Simon Steffan Sibande, Mhako Norest (truck driver), Albert Mutengi and the seven-year-old Parazai Maziva.

All were Zimbabweans.

“We are also currently providing an immediate structure for relief with tents, blankets and food,” she said. Underwood added that it was unfortunate that they did not have enough equipment, especially tents, for the families to have shelter.

She said: “We are also engaging the district as well as the provincial government to assist.”

Another resident, Mr Joseph Masindi of Tshirolwe, could not go to work on Monday as he was trying to fix the roof of his five-room house that was also blown away by the storm.

Hundreds of people were left stranded and homeless after their houses had been blown away by a devastating storm that hit various villages in the Makhado Municipal area on Saturday.

The storm left more than 148 families without roofs over their head, while some houses were completely destroyed. Two houses were also struck by lightning. Several people were injured during the storm. The affected villages include Tshirolwe, Mashamba, Tshikuwi, Matsa, Mukondeni, Maebane, Nwaxinyamani and Mashau.

Mathale and Phiri to visit Tanda Shock as foetus is found on the Univen Campus Premier Cassel Mathale, his MECs and Musina Mayor Carol Phiri will visit Tanda village as part of the government’s public participation programme (formerly known as imbizo).

The visit will take place next Friday (24 February), starting at 09:00 at Tanda Happy Boys sports field.

Municipal spokesperson Wilson Dzebu says community members and different community structures will be given an opportunity to raise issues directly with their government and, where possible, responses will be given on the spot.

“This is a forum for enhancing dialogue and interaction between the government and the people.

It provides an opportunity for the government to communicate its programme of action and the progress being made to bring a better life for all. Besides that, the visit will promote participation of the public in the programmes to improve their

lives, and highlight people’s concerns, grievances and advice about government’s work.”

He says ten buses will ferry people from the whole Musina municipal area and some parts of Mutale.

“Government is offering free transport to make sure that all the people attend this important event. Buses will transport people from Madimbo, Malale, Domboni, Manenzhe, Bale, Mapakoni, Matshena, Masea, Mabvete, Tshiungani, Muswodi Dipeni, Muswodi Tshisimani, Folovhodwe, Linton Mopane, Schuitdrift, Tshipise, Doreen, Tshikhudini, Campbell, Harper, Skoonplaas Gate, Ext 10 Satellite Police Station, Khakhathi Spaza, Freedom Park Supermarket, Mshongoville High Point, Cell C, Mshongo Bakery and Nancefield Community Hall.”

He advises community members who want to know more about bus routes and departure times to contact their ward councillors.

Police in Thohoyandou are appealing to people who might have information about a lady who might have been pregnant but currently has no baby, to inform the police.

This comes after the discovery of a foetus at a residence at the University of Venda last Thursday.

According to information at Mirror’s disposal, cleaners who were doing their routine tasks on campus found the foetus in a dustbin next to a student residence.

The workers then notified campus security, who in turn reported the matter to the police.

Univen spokespersonTakalani Dzaga reacted with shock over the incident. “We as a university have all the facilities that are of assistance to students. We have health-related services, such as medical and counselling services, and we always urge staff and students to utilise these services,” he said. He said campus security, in conjuction with the police, will investigate the incident. “We are now appealing to the university community to please assist us in the investigation,” he said.

Thohoyandou police spokesperson Major Mashudu Malelo confirmed the incident. “We believe that a member of the university community could have seen someone who was pregnant and who has no baby now. People know each other here and we know it is just a matter of time before the suspect will be known,” he said. Student doctor killed in cold blood at Siloam Hospital

Premier Cassel Mathale and Mayor Carol Phiri are expected to give an update on government achievements and challenges at Tanda village, outside Musina, next Friday.

A 23-year-old student doctor, Phuti Phantsha, was allegedly shot and killed by her 34-year-old boyfriend at Siloam Hospital, before the man turned the gun on himself.

The suspect, Sepanere Rakalela, allegedly shot Phantsha in the head before shooting and killing himself.

The incident was discovered on Monday after Phantsha’s family tried calling her several times without any success.

They started to get worried and contacted the hospital management, who then went to Phantsha’s room to investigate. When

looking through the window, the staff members saw Phantsha lying on the bed in a pool of blood.

They decided to call the police, who broke down the door. Both bodies were then discovered.

The spokesperson for the Siloam police, W/O Edward Tharaga, confirmed the incident. He said that the police had opened an inquest and murder docket, following the incident. “We discovered that Phantsha was shot in the head, while Rakalela also had a gunshot wound to the head. We suspect that the man shot his girlfriend before

turning the gun on himself,” said Tharaga.

He said that Rakalela’s licensed Nerinko pistol was found at the scene of the incident. Both Phantsha and Rakalela are originally from Zebediela. Rakalela was working as a student doctor at the Siloam Hospital.

Meanwhile, the provincial spokesperson for the department of health, Mr Joe Maila, sent his condolences to the bereaved family. “The deceased’s colleagues, who had been traumatised by the incident, were receiving counselling at the hospital,” added Maila.

Illegal digger killed A 71-year-old suspected illegal gold digger from Mberengwa outside Beit Bridge was killed when the walls of a shaft in a disused mine collapsed on him.

The victim was identified as Jason Moyo.

Police spokesperson C/ Supt Lawrence Chinhengo said Moyo’s body was discovered by villagers last Friday. “Moyo visited his in-laws at the village where the incident occurred. It was reported that he went to Umzingwane River where he intended to dig for alluvial gold at a disused mine in the Zezani area.

While he was busy digging, the walls of the pit collapsed on him and buried him under the debris.”

The victim’s in-laws became suspicious when Moyo did not return and they conducted a search, leading to the discovery of the man’s clothes near the mine.

A report was made to the police and the body was then retrieved.

Concern about distribution of sex videos

Man arrested for theft of computers A male suspect was arrested in connection with the theft of two computers at the offices of Musina Municipality’s finance section. The computers were later recovered at a house where the suspect stays, about 500 metres away from the municipal building.

Acting Municipal Manager Pedron Nndwa said the suspect tampered with the alarm system of the municipality and allegedly broke the window to gain access to the office. “Workers were surprised when they came in on Monday morning and realised that two computers were missing. The window was also broken and the alarm system had

been tampered with.”

Nndwa said he immediately called the police to report the matter. “We did not just leave it in the hands of the police.

We also conducted our own investigations to make sure that the computers were recovered.

We are talking about taxpayers’ money and we cannot allow criminals to do as they wish in a public institution like a municipality.”

Nndwa says he received information that the suspect was trying to sell the computers to a community member. “The community member already got information that there some computers had been stolen from

the municipality. He then came to us and we called for backup from the police and went to the suspect’s house.”

He says one of the computers was found hidden in a mielie bag behind the house. “The suspect then pointed to another one that was hidden under the mattress in one of the rooms. It was quite a big breakthrough and we want to warn criminals not to take chances with municipal property, because we will end up nabbing them.”

He thanked all involved in the recovery of the computers.

The suspect had still to appear in court at the time of going to press.

Forget about the notorious Krugersdorp sex video; a lot of them can be found in Musina.

There seems to be a competition about who can make a better sex video in the small town.

Since the beginning of this year, more than six sex videos have been circulating in Musina. All of the sex videos have been made by the participants themselves. Most of the videos involve grown-up, married men and underage girls.

An unconfirmed report states that one of the men who had “acted” in one of the videos was arrested and released on bail when a girl’s parents opened a case of statutory rape after they had seen the video.

W/O Peter Mudau, spokesperson of the police station, said he could not confirm or deny any arrest “as I was on sick leave.”

He confirmed, however, that the management of Musina police

station was aware of and concerned about the high number of sex videos circulating in the area.

“As management of the station, we recently had a meeting where we decided that we should warn the community that the recording of sex videos is illegal.”

“We also decided in that meeting that the community should be made aware that anyone who is found in possession of a sex video can be arrested and prosecuted,” said Mudau. He added that they were aware of the fact that many of these sex videos also involved minors.

“Any such videos that we find in the public domain will be used to arrest the culprits and prosecute them,” said Mudau.

He could not confirm whether it was true that there were sex videos involving a Home Affairs woman, attached to the Beit Bridge border post, having

a five-some with four SANDF members.

Unconfirmed reports say the woman has since taken leave as a result of stress after being mocked by colleagues who had seen the video.

Many believe that the sex videos were emulating the Krugersdorp sex video that involves a warder and a police officer.

Mudau said: “We believe technology is playing a big role in this thing. Children now have access to technological things like What’s up and Internet though cell-phones and computers. These things gives them access to unauthorized things like pornographic material. We believe some of the children are getting involved in sex video after seeing them in their cellphones and computers.

Lovers arrested after death of newborn

Acting Musina Municipal Manager Pedron Nndwa engages with police officials in the municipal offices where the two computers were stolen.

A 24-year-old woman from Madlambuzi village outside Beit Bridge allegedly colluded with her 26-year-old boyfriend and killed their newborn baby in an effort to conceal their illicit affair, police have said.

Police spokesperson Insp Tafanana Dzirutwe said the incident occurred on Wednesday at Madlambuzi village.

“The woman, Memory Gumbo, whose husband is serving a jail

term, apparently had an illicit affair with Titus Kokerai, which resulted in her falling pregnant.

Last Wednesday, the woman experienced labour pains. She then approached her boyfriend and the two hatched a plan to kill the baby. Soon after giving birth, Gumbo and Kokerai stashed the newly born baby boy in a plastic bag and put the infant into a suitcase, suffocating the baby boy,” Dzirutwe said. Gumbo was,

however, later approached by a local woman who quizzed her over her pregnancy, and she allegedly told the woman that she had had a miscarriage. The woman became suspicious and reported the matter to the police, leading to Gumbo’s arrest. She then implicated Kokerai. Dzirutwe said the two suspects would appear in court soon, facing infanticide charges. The body was taken to a local hospital for a post mortem.

Another chance for former prisoners Ex-offenders in Vhembe who were released from prison some on parole - received a new lease on life when they were given tools and machinery to start their own businesses.

Six inmates received sewing machines, welding machines, scaffolding and other building tools to assist them in setting up their own businesses. The tools and machinery were donated by a non-profit organisation, New Life After Prison Community Forum.

kandafhi Makhuvha, said after a careful study, they found out that prisoners were left on their own after their release from prison.

This also made them very vulnerable to temptations that could land them back in jail again.

“We felt we should stand up and do something that would benefit the ex-prisoners and the community at large. Prisoners need care and guidance after their release and this is where we come in,” he said.

He said the skills they had acquired in prison could help them generate an income. Beides giving them the tools, the organisation will also engage the office of the President with a view that their bad records be removed,

for them to stand a chance to get employment.

He urged communities to welcome the prisoners and not to label them. He also appealed to communities to make use of the skills that they had and to give them jobs.

A traditional leader, Hosi Bohani Eddie Shigamane, hailed the initiative as a positive step towards the eradication of crime.

One of the recipients, Vitus Manwadu, said they would make use of the chance afforded them after their release from prison. “We thank God for having touched the hearts of people like New Life after Prison, who thought of us.”

ANCYL accused of plotting against mayor The South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) branch in Tshikota is accusing the ANCYL of plotting against the mayor of the Makhado Municipality, simply because she did not support Premier Cassel Mathale during the provincial conference that was held at the University of Limpopo outside Polokwane in December last year.

SANCO said in a statement last week that it is clear that the issues the Makhado Municipality is confronted with are a result of “a conspiracy planned after the outcomes of the ANC provincial conference.”

Last week, the Vhembe regional chairperson for the ANCYL, Rolivhuwa Nelwamondo, called for the resignation of Cllr Mavhungu Luruli as mayor of the Makhado Municipality. Luruli apparently supported the Deputy Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, who competed against Mathale at the conference last

The chairperson of the SANCO branch in Tshikota, Pastor Philemon Mashau, said: “As leaders, masses and comrades of this movement, we cannot allow such ambitions, selfishness and position-mongering to disorganise us as Makhado. We will all go out and fight this strange tradition in the ANC.” He said that the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) was being used as a political vehicle to cause confusion at the municipality.

“We were shocked about the ANCYL’s statement attacking the mayor. We are therefore saying that SAMWU and the ANCYL and others who are on the same mission must not play tricks with the citizens of Makhado by causing disorder at the municipality, simply for political gain,” said Mashau, adding that the appearance of the Chief Whip in the media, taking a stand against the municipality, without the mandate of the council, was

The Young Communist League backed SANCO’s statements.

Mashau added: “As SANCO and YCL, we are concerned about the compromised service delivery after the workers of the Makhado Municipality embarked on a go-slow strike. Taxpayers’ money is being wasted because SAMWU officials continue getting paid, even though they are on a go-slow strike, not working.

As taxpayers and leaders of the masses of our communities, we are concerned about service and the attacks on the leaders for political gain.”

SANCO had planned to hold a press conference at Tshedza Lodge last Wednesday, but it could not go ahead as ANCYL members arrived at the venue uninvited.

Mayor Luruli could not be reached for comment.

for assault Miluwani-Sokoutenda community honours a “strong mother” Jailed A 28 year-old Beit Bridge resident, who ran A strong mother, who gave birth to two severely disabled daughters and raised them under extremely difficult conditions, was hailed by family members and friends when the daughters organised a thanks-giving ceremony in her honour at the weekend.

Vele Masindi (69) is the mother of disabled sisters Avhahumi (42) and Azwifaneli (50) Masindi of Miluwani-Sokoutenda village outside Thohoyandou.

In an emotional speech, Vele described how she struggled to raise her two children. “When I gave birth to my first disabled child, Azwifaneli,

in 1962, I did not want to accept it. I later accepted that it was a gift from God and life went on normally. But when I became pregnant and gave birth to Avhahumi in 1962, I could not understand why God was punishing me in that manner. Fortunately, I also quickly accepted it and regarded my beautiful daughters as angels from God. They are the best gifts I ever received in my life.”

Vele said she gave birth to the daughters during a time when other parents used to strangle their disabled children because giving birth to disabled children was regarded as a curse in her community.

“I defied all the odds and also refused when family

members wanted to take and keep them away to a local hospital for disabled people. I had a strong belief that I would raise them myself although the conditions were very tough by then. There were no wheelchairs and they used to crawl around our rocky village, injuring themselves several times. Staying in derelict mud house, I used to brew mahafhe (home-made beer) to sell, to make sure that my little angels had something to eat.”

Vele remembers when her late husband, Frank, used to chase people who called the disabled sisters names.

“They were called by all the bad names one could think of. My husband was so worried that he chased them with a big stick and later planted long fern trees around the yard to make sure that people did not see what happened inside our homestead.”

Although the sisters grew up in a very poor family, they persevered and went to school. Today they are respected business partners in their area. They jointly own Mvudi Valley Trading 5, a company that specializes in supplies and catering. They both have a diploma in computer and call centre studies. Their company employs nine people on part-time basis. With tears running down her face, Avhahumi remembers the difficult days gone by. “I started my primary education at Tshilidzini Special School in 1983 and later matriculated at Phaswana High School in 1993. Azwifaneli started her primary schooling at Letaba and matriculated at Lwenzhe High School. It was very difficult at first because we used to crawl to school without any wheelchairs.”

Avhahumi has had good and bad moments in her fruitful life.

“My saddest moment was when my only daughter, Masana, who was born on 9 February 1999, passed away on 23 August 2001. She was everything to me and I just felt the world crumbling around me. My happiest moment was when I was presented with an electronic wheelchair worth more than R30 000 by the former mayor of Vhembe District Municipality, Falaza Mdaka, on 13 April last year.”

Azwifaneli says although she came across difficult situations in her life, she comforts herself with her pride and joy - her only son, Masala, who was born on 13 June 1993. The sisters have a very special message to other disabled members of the community. “We have achieved more than Proud mother ... We call upon other disabled people to learn from us and create a precious life for themselves,” said Azwifaneli.

Tanaka Nyoni of House Number 427 Dulibadzimu suburb in the border town was convicted on assault charges by Magistrate Carrington Karidzagundi. He was sentenced to 12 months in prison, of which four months were conditionally suspended for 5 years.

The prosecutor, Mr Marvelous Chikomo, said that on 7 February, the two complainants, Constables Ishmael Rumatye and Phanuel Moyo, were patrolling the Dulibadzimu suburb when they spotted Nyoni harassing people who were shopping at a supermarket. They approached him, during which time Nyoni resisted arrest. He ran wild and grabbed Rumatye’s reflector bib and tore it into shreds, before taking Moyo’s handcuffs and striking him on the forehead, causing a deep cut.

A report was made to the police, leading to the arrest of Moyo.

SA farmer acquitted A South African crocodile farmer, operating in Mwenezi outside Beit Bridge, who was facing 33 counts of indecent assault after he was alleged to have abused eight local teenage boys, has been acquitted, due to a lack of incriminating evidence.

Tyron Naylor (28), who was involved in crocodile rearing at the Zimbabwe Bio Energy (ZBE) ranch in Mwenezi outside Beit Bridge, was acquitted last week on all 33 counts of indecent assault, after the state failed to prove its case.

In his judgment after the trial, which was held in camera because of the ages of some of the complainants, local magistrate Mr Timeon Makunde ruled that there was no evidence that Naylor had abused the boys. He was accused of stroking and sucking the boys’ private parts in return for money and gifts. Naylor told the court that he had never abused the boys or taken photographs of them while they were naked. He argued that there were a lot of unanswered questions, especially considering that the complainants had only reported the alleged offence after some time and not voluntarily. He further argued that it was clear, judging by the time a report was made against him and the inconsistencies in the testimony by the complainants, that they might not have reported the matter voluntarily.

The prosecutor, Ms Sofia Bhusvumani, had told the court that Naylor had, sometime between 2009 and August last year, picked up the boys, aged between 11and 16 years, at different times and driven them to various places. Naylor was alleged to have taken the boys to a local hotel, his crocodile breeding ponds and his own house where he would allegedly abuse them.

Naylor was also alleged to have paid the boys amounts between US$10 to US$20 at each of the occasions and had also allegedly promised to buy them bicycles. He had also allegedly promised to teach them how to drive. He was arrested after one of the boys reported the alleged abuse to his parents, who then made a report to the police.

Ten years for rape A 28-year-old man from Siyoka outside Beit Bridge, who had raped his workmate who had turned down his proposal for sex, was sentenced to an effective 10 years on Monday.

Edson Muleya pleaded not guilty, but was convicted by Regional Magistrate Joseph Mabeza.

Prosecutor Johannes Tlou said Muleya and the victim were employed at the same business.The court heard that on 24 October last year, Muleya proposed sex to the complainant and he was turned down.

On 29 November, at around 03:00, Muleya went to the woman’s bedroom and forced the door open.

He propositioned the woman for the second time and she rejected him again. He was angered by the woman’s actions and ordered the victim to remove her clothes and hit her with an an electric cable. He then raped her three times throughout the night.

The woman reported the matter to the police and Muleya was arrested.

Van Heerden to lead AFB Makhado

“Hawkers will not move out of CBD”

AFB Makhado came under new command with the appointment of Brig-Gen Schalk van Heerden as the new officer commanding.

Gen Van Heerden officially took over the reigns at South Africa’s “Fortress of the North” during a change-of-command parade held at the base last Friday. He took over command from outgoing commander Brig-Gen Chris Delport, who was appointed Director of Communication Systems in Pretoria.

Gezani Masing, the municipal manager of the Greater Giyani Municipality, has denied that there are plans to move hawkers out of the CBD. He described the statements made by representatives of small businesses in Giyani as false, made by people with “hidden agendas”.

His statement follows a meeting held by small businesses, comprising mostly hawkers, held last week. They discussed a new proposal by the Giyani Municipality to register all hawkers in the municipality to be able to monitor their activities.

ity intended to “trim down the number of hawkers in the Giyani Municipality to 850 people”.

They said that the registration process was a ploy to regulate the number of hawkers the municipality needed.

“The registration process they’re talking about would mean that if people failed to meet certain requirements, they would then be disqualified from selling here; meaning that they would be asked to pack up their stuff and go home,” explained Jackson Mdaka, the chairperson of the committee representing the small businesses.

“How do they expect us to feed our kids at home?” shouted a hawker from behind during last

week’s meeting. Many of the hawkers stated that they were uncertain about their future in light of these allegations.

Asked whether there were any plans by the municipality to trim down the number of hawkers in Giyani or to disqualify some of them, Masingi said there were no such plans.

He said the only thing the municipality wanted was to maintain order in town by knowing the number of hawkers they had, so they could arrange them accordingly.

“Some of the hawkers who trade in restricted areas will need to be moved elsewhere,” he said.

He added: “We’re currently in the process of building a modern, intermodal public transportation facility and we would, of course, need to know how many hawkers we have here.

This will help us allocate (space to) some of them there in an orderly manner, once we’re done,” he said.

Masingi also brushed aside the impression that the municipality did not want vendors from outside the Greater Giyani Municipality.

He said that the municipality’s registration process was only “for regulation purposes, The Greater Giyani Municipality denies having plans to chase away and not to discriminate against anybody.” hawkers.

Amazing victory for Rospa United Rospa United proved all the critics wrong when they unexpectedly beat Phungo All Stars 1-0 in their Vodacom Promotional League match at the Tshifulanani Stadium on Saturday.

United played without their midfielder-cumstriker, Happy Mahuntsi. He was nursing the injury he sustained in their match against Super Eagles three weeks ago. Phungo All Stars committed suicide by taking too long to replace their fumbling players, Ivan Mahangwahaya and Kamogelo Molapisi.

Rospa meant business from the onset, but their strikers, Michael Moloto and Mashudu Mashapha, could not match the opponents in the first 20 minutes of the game. Mashapha upset the fans in the 14th minute when he unleashed aimlessly from the edge of the box.

The keeper of United, Mxolisi Ncube, made his presence felt when he brilliantly saved what everyone thought was a sure goal in the 28th minute. Charles Melenyane of Stars went loose from the left corner and released at close range shot. Ncube braved the shot and executed a brilliant save, much to the disappointment of the Stars’ fans.

No goal could be seen until half time, despite several threats by both sides. Stars replaced Ivan Mahangwahaya and Kamogelo Molapisi with Sifiso Masina and Aphane Stemmer respectively.

The goal which separated the boys from men came in the 76th minute. Mukhwetha Mukoma headed home after a square pass from Ndivhuwo Ntseku. As part of their time-wasting strategies, United replaced Mashudu Mashapha with Collen Miyeza late in the game.

This weekend marks the beginning of the second-round matches for the teams affiliated to the Limpopo Stream of the Vodacom Promotional League.

There will be a double header at the Malamulele Stadium tomorrow. Basel FC, who share the stadium with Nobela All Stars, will open the contest tomorrow, when they entertain Lephalale Young Killers at 13:00. Nobela All Stars will meet the struggling Super Eagles at 15:00.

Stars are geared to make Super Eagles pay for the defeat they suffered at the hands of Baroka FC at the same venue last Saturday. Phungo All Stars have good reason to believe that they will emerge as the victors in their match against Fanang Diatla at the Eltivillas grounds.

Rospa United will play against The Dolphins FC at the Seshego Stadium. The match of the week will be between Giyani Hotspurs and the pace setters, Baroka FC at the Giyani Stadium. Hotspurs and Baroka are closely contesting for the league championship.

Blue Rocks and Mighty FC will meet at the Nkowankowa Stadium in Tzaneen. Modimolle Aces will have a date with Winners Park at the Mahwelereng Stadium, while Magezi FC and Dinare FC will battle it out at the Seshego Stadium on Sunday.

Dangerous Darkies hold log-leaders to a draw Khubvi Dangerous Darkies rose to the occasion and held the log-leaders, Makwarela Development Stars, to a thrilling 1-1draw in their SAB League match at the FNB Makwarela Stadium on Sunday.

Darkies were nervous in the first 10 minutes, until they realized that there was nothing to fear and started to play like a united team.

It was a little late at that stage, as Development Stars had already made their mark. Their goal was scored by Phindulo Muthige. A heartbreaking scramble within the Darkies’ danger area gave rise to a goal after Phindulo Muthige finished off a rebound.

Darkies did not give up, despite conceding an early goal. Instead, they put extra effort into their search for the equaliser. The keeper of Stars, Emmanuel Mathobo, handled a back pass next to the goal line. Referee Deon Mphuma awarded a free kick to Darkies. 1-All draw in Safa SAB Tshiozwi derby match The Safa SAB derby match between Tshiozwi Dynamos and Western Stars ended in 1-all draw at Tshiozwi on Saturday.

The home side was very strong in the middle of the park and bungled the finishing upfront. In the tenth minute, Dynamos missed an opportunity to score.

Mpho Mavhandu unleashed a powerful shot from the edge of the box and hit the crossbar after receiving a pass from Maligana Siebe. Six minutes later, Western Stars’ prolific striker, Robby Munonoka, received a pass from Lufuno Ndou and ran a few steps forward before dishing the ball to his brother Percy, who missed the ball, with the empty net in front of him.

There was a huge grumble from the Dynamos supporters when their technical staff introduced Matodzi Maruli for Mashudu Nengovhela. The fans were against the move, saying the player who was supposed to have been replaced was Vhutshilo Nedzamba, who was evidently down and out. Dynamos’ speedy striker, Aluwani Nedzamba, was brought down inside the penalty area and the referee pointed to the white spot; Mpho Mavhandu converted.

Dynamos suffered a blow early in the second half. They were forced to replace the injured Alugumi Mamugudubi with Nyathi Muvhango. Percy Munonoka scored the equaliser from the edge of the box in the 67th minute.

The Vhembe District Municipality, in partnership with the Tshidimbini Mukumbi Cooperative, will host a marula festival on Saturday (18 February).

It will take place at the big tree near Zwigodin village in the Mutale local municipality and the programme will start at 11:00.

The spokesperson for the Vhembe District Municipality,

Mr Moss Shibambu, says he event is the first of its kind. It is a build-up event towards the provincial marula festival at Phalaborwa during the first week of March this year.

The marula fruits ripen between January and March each year. The fruit is rich in nutrients and serves as an excellent base for fruity soft drinks, nectars,

teas, liqueurs, wines, marula beer and punches. One of the women at Tshipise-Zwigodini, Ms Julia Mammbeda, who is famous for making marula beer, said many unemployed women sold marula beer to community members all over the province and even in Gauteng. “We are ready for the festival and we hope it will help showcase our marula beer.”

Musina structures submit plans for new projects Representatives from different community structures converged at Musina’s Nancefield municipal boardroom last Wednesday to submit projects that should be included in the integrated development plan (IDP) of the municipality in the next five years.

Mayor Carol Phiri says that, according to the Municipal Systems Act, every council that comes into office after the local government elections has to prepare its own IDP, which guides them for the five years in office.

Mthembi is too ill to appear in court The perjury case against Doris Mthembi, well known for her constant court appearances, was delayed this week because of her ill health.

She was due to appear in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court on Monday to stand trial in one of the numerous cases that keep on piling up against her.

The case relates to an incident in September

last year when she tried to open a case of rape against her estranged husband, Goddard Tendani Mugwena. During the trial, which commenced in October 2011, Mthembi claimed that the police had refused to help her.

Mthembi’s lawyer accused the investigating officer in the case, W/O Fanie Mynhardt of the police’s Family Violence Unit, of not listening to Mthembi’s account of what had happened. He accused Mynhardt of only listening to Mugwena’s side. It was during this trial that the case was postponed to Monday this week.

On Monday, Mthembi’s case had to be postponed yet again when she failed to appear in court.

Because she did not make arrangements with the State, a bench warrant for her arrest was issued by the court. Shortly after the court adjourned, Mthembi’s live-in lover, well-known TV star Joe Ragwala, came to court with a medical certificate.

According to him, Mthembi is gravely ill and in hospital, “awaiting an operation.”

The medical certificate that he presented to the court said that Mthembi had been admitted to the Tshilidzini Hospital on 13 February due to a “medical illness.” She was also booked off sick until 15 February. The court, however, rejected the certificate, due to its vague description of Mthembi’s alleged illness.

On Tuesday, Mthembi herself brought another medical certificate to court, stating that she was in hospital from 12 until 13 February because “she was vomiting.” It also came to light during this visit to the court that her attorney has since withdrawn from the matter. Before postponing the matter and cancelling the warrant against Mthembi, the court once again warned Mthembi to get her affairs in order.

Mthembi will appear in court again on 28 February, before which time she will have to appoint a new lawyer.

Ms Patricia Tshivase is the new marketing manager at Khoroni Hotel and Casino. She was born in Johannesburg and received her education in Venda. She obtained her BA degree in psychology at the University of Venda and started working at the then Venda Sun in 1997 as a trainee dealer.

While working at Khoroni, she obtained her teacher’s diploma and was promoted to tables manager in 2007. In November 2010, she was transferred to Frontier Inn and Casino as gaming manager. In January 2011, she left the industry to pursue a teaching career. She was employed at Liivha Combined School for a year. On 1 January this year, she was appointed as marketing manager at Khoroni. She is the mother of three boys, Dzudzanani(12), Rofhiwa(10) and Mulalo (5). Her hobbies include cooking and going to the gym. She is a Christian and a member of the Lutheran Church.

Madombidzha Celtic too good for Try Again Madombidzha Celtic outclassed Madombidzha Try Again 3-1 in a Limpopo Dairy league match at the Madombidzha grounds on Sunday.

Celtic approached the game with their tails high, as if they were going to win the match. The youthful Try Again were fully prepared for the game, as they managed to match their brothers in all departments throughout the first half.

The game was characterized by rough tackles in the first 12 minutes. The referee, Joseph Raphadana, calmed the situation by flashing three yellow cards in quick succession.

The first card went to Ndivhuwo Lethole for dangerous play on Ewdin Mulaudzi. Adivhaho Tshiremba and Letlalo Sillo, both of Try Again, were also booked for rough play.

Silas Ramboma of the home team beat the defence of Try Again and scored an easy goal. Try Again missed a good opportunity five minutes later, when Balanganani Mafela’s shot was saved by the Celtic keeper, Aston Masase.

Celtic lost their fighting spirit and their defence started to leak. Maanda Maladzha was brought down inside the penalty area and the referee pointed to the white spot.

Rudzani Muregu scored from there, making the half-time score 1-1.

Edwin Mulaudzi formed a deadly combination with Victor Rasilupa and Fhumulani Moshia in the middle of the park. Rasilupa received a neat pass from Thabo Ramathlo and released a halfvolley that was too hot for the opponents’ keeper to handle.

The home team introduced Mpho Ndou and that was clever move from Celtic.

If the words of Dynamos goalkeeper Mashudu Maphitha are anything to go by, his team will collect maximum points at the expense of the University of Pretoria on Sunday.

They will meet in their National First Division League match at the Giyani Stadium.

Both Dynamos and University of Pretoria recruited a number of new players before the closure of the registration window period last month.

Although it will be their home fixture, it will not be easy for the pride of Giyani to conquer Amatuks, who are currently leading the pack.

Dropping points will make them relinquish their leadership to Thanda Royal Zulu.

On the other hand, Ri khomeni ri nga peli must win the match in order to remain hopeful of finishing their league programme among the top three teams, which will let them qualify to take part in the promotional play-offs.

In the other National First Division League matches that will also be played on Sunday, Witbank Spurs will host Carara Kicks at the Ackerville Stadium in Witbank.

Spurs must start collecting league points as they are languishing at the bottom of the log. United FC will play against Thanda Royal Zulu at the Botshabelo Stadium, while Sivutsa Stars will battle with Bay United at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.

In the two matches that will be played tomorrow afternoon, Atlie FC will host Mpumalanga Black Aces at the Sinaba Stadium in Johannesburg, while Blackburn Rovers and FC AK will meet at the Buffalo City Stadium in the Eastern Cape.

Two matches will be played this evening. The Cape Town derby between Chippas United and Vasco da Gama will be staged at the Phillipi Stadium in Cape Town. African Warriors will lock horns with FC Cape Town at the Charles Mopedi Stadium.

Last Saturday was a nightmare day for one of the local referees, Mr Avhasei Edgar Simba of Phalama village. He was officiating in the Vodacom Promotional League match between Nobela All Stars and Baroka FC at the Malamulele Stadium. Simba cursed the day he chose refereeing as a career shortly after the final whistle. The officials and fans of Nobela All Stars allegedly barged onto the pitch and assaulted him, accusing him of favouritism. The mob accused Simba of denying them what they described as two clear penalties in the game. The league was still awaiting the reports from the two clubs and the match officials at the time of going to press.
