By Elmon Tshikhudo The survivor of a mysterious shooting by the police on New Year ’s Eve, who was recently cleared by the court of any wrongdoing, said he would “not take the matter lying down”.

Speaking to Limpopo Mirror at a car wash at Sibasa, where he was washing his car after it was handed back to him by the police, Mr Vhutshilo Tshikororo said he would never forget the incident which left his close friend, Musiiwa Makungo, dead. The incident happened at a spot not far from Thohoyandou Technical High

School.

“We were in a celebratory mood at around 23:00, driving from Thohoyandou in Block F, when I noticed that we were be­ ing followed by an unknown vehicle after passing the school,” said Tshikororo. He said they had seen a car parked under trees in the dark just at the crossing to the school and they had not suspected anything.

“All of a sudden, we could see that a car was chasing after us and I had to accelerate because I feared that we would be hi­ jacked,” he said. They then heard gunshots and the falling of broken glass behind them.

saw that my friend was critically wounded. I stopped and the police hit me all over the body, and that was when I told them that they had shot my friend,” he said.

According to him, the incident has left him traumatised, and there was no way that he would leave the matter as it stood. He intends to sue the police.

“We are law­abiding citizens. These police do as they wish and shoot at innocent people. My friend is gone now for nothing.”

Mbilwi High still on top of their game

A minibus taxi, travelling from Musina to Johannesburg, got into trouble with the traffic police in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) on Sunday. Traffic officials were on duty next to the N1 when they stopped and searched the taxi. Upon inspection they realised that the taxi carried a total of 27 passengers (in photo next to taxi), 17 more people than its permit allows it to transport. The driver, who is a Zimbabwean, was deported and by Tuesday the traffic department confirmed that they were still waiting for the owner to come and pay the fine before his confiscated taxi would be released.

Mbilwi Secondary School, one of the best performing schools in the country, which continues to achieve excellent matric results year after year, will continue being the pride of the country, says Principal Cedric Lidzhade.

He was speaking after the re­ lease of the 2013 Grade 12 results which saw the school improving from 99,3% to 99,8%. “There is no magic here.

Hard work, dedication and support from different stake­ holders, including our traditional leader Thovhele Gole Mphaphu­ li, is what makes us tick and be the best.”

He added that they had decided

to focus on the lower grades as they are the foundations for better results in Grade 12. “The lower grades should be taken care of.

We have to instil love for subjects such as maths and science from an early age.”

Lidzhade said the school had become synonymous with quality results, for which a foundation had been laid by his predecessors.

“I was a pupil here. I know this school and we are just walking in the footsteps of those who came before us,” he added.

The school has been producing a 100% pass for more than ten years.

Last year, 478 wrote the matric exams and 378 got “bachelor

passes” and they had only one who failed. During Limpopo Mirror’s visit on Wednesday, which was the first day of the schooling calendar, it was busi­ ness unusual as educators were busy with their classes.

MEC Rudolph Phala, who vis­ ited the school, accompanied by Thulamela Mayor Grace Mahosi, Thovhele Gole Mphaphuli and other officials from the Depart­ ment of Education, were only given a short time to address the pupils as they were rushing to classes.

Sibasa Circuit, under which the school falls, also recorded better results, achieving an 88,4% pass rate in the 2013 examinations.

The chairperson of the local Civic Association, James Deleki­ sa, has confirmed that community members are collecting water from the rivers with wheelbar­ rows. He says they are going to discuss the water crisis with the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM).

The VDM´s spokesperson, Matodzi Ralushai, has said the crisis in some areas is caused by the theft of water pumps and the vandalizing of water taps. Ralushai says villages like Tshituni and Biaba have many illegal connections and it is af­ fecting other people's access to water. He further says that many water tankers are broken because of the terrible condition of roads in the Vhembe area.

"We are only getting water from people who have boreholes and villagers are losing money every day as they have to buy water. Those without transport have to pay more than R7 for 25 litres of water. If you cannot buy water from those who have boreholes, you must be prepared to travel long distances with a wheelbarrow to collect water from Ravele village where one of the shop owners provides water to the community," said Machaba. For many of the province's residents Limpopo’s biggest dam, the Nandoni dam, remains a white elephant. Some communities around Thulamela, Mutale and Makhado last saw water coming from this source in June last year.

Earlier this year, residents could be seen waiting patiently in line for water, but without any reward. Many describe the dam, which was completed in 2004, as nothing more than a picnic site where tourists can enjoy water sports.

The communities of Mulen­ zhe, Dididi, Budeli, Mutoti, Khakhanwa and Mphego are close to the dam, but there is no water flowing through their taps. Villages that are slightly further away, but also suffering, are Sinthumule, Kutama, Vu­ wani, Tshitale and Nzhelele in the Makhado jurisdiction. The residents of these areas have to push wheelbarrows for several kilometres to fetch water from

Apparently, the police thought Tshikororo and his friend were planning to bomb ATM machines in Thohoyandou. Tshikororo said he was nowhere near the banks on that fateful night.

The incident, which occurred on New Year's Eve, was kept a closely

guarded secret by the police.

The surviving victim was also overwhelmed with fear until mem­ bers of the community intervened and advised him to tell his story to the world. Thohoyandou police spokesperson Const Avhafarei Tshio­ vhe confirmed the incident and said the police had acted on tip-off that there were people who wanted to

blow up ATMs at one of the banks in Thohoyandou. She confirmed that charges against Tshikororo had been dropped and that the Independent Police Investigative Unit (IPIU) was investigating charges of murder against the police.

IPIU spokesman Moses Dlamini said they were investigating the case but no one had been arrested so far.

The other traditional healer, Ms Mphephu Chauke from Maphophe, also stated that she was sick “and could not help myself.

Ever since I attended this man's service, I felt changed and I could feel the healing in me," she said.

Pastor Nashford said his church was modelled on that of his mentor, Nigerian prophet TB Joshua. He is a former member of the Ap­ ostolic Faith Mission Church. “Since we start­ ed this service, we have seen God do wonders, with many who quit drinking. Many with different problems were helped and many sur­ rendered their lives to God. At the same time, we received negative comments, with some posting messages on Facebook that I am a devil worshipper.

That has not stopped us as God continues to make changes in many people’s lives,” he add­ ed.

Rotondwa crowned as Miss Vhembe A 19-year-old student, Miss Rotondwa Musitha of Makhado, was crowned Miss Vhembe during a beauty pageant at the Thohoyandou Town Hall a fortnight ago. She is in her second year of studying business administration at the Regenesis Business School.

Twelve beautiful girls from the four municipalities in Vhembe vied for the title. Rotondwa went home with R12 000 cash, a cloth­ ing voucher of R10 000 from Sun Odds, a R12 000 clothing vouch­ er from P Designs and a clothing voucher from Venda Lover.

Mthembi court case postponed again There seems to be no end in sight of the Doris Mthembi saga.

The troubled former wife of Thohoyandou businessman Mr Goddard Mugwena, who ditched him for former Muvhango actor Joe Ragwala, appeared in court

this week for the umpteenth time.

Mthembi was sentenced to ten years' imprisonment in the Louis Trichardt Regional Court two months ago for making a false statement in an affidavit, claim­ ing Mugwena had kidnapped her at gunpoint and raped her. She is

at present serving her sentence in the Thohoyandou Correctional Centre at Matatshe.

The other accused in the case are Ragwala, Vincent Phakula (28) and Moses Ntlenana (24).

Magistrate J Coetzee postponed the case to 3 March.

Mthembi's attorney had applied that the case be postponed, due to Mthembi’s illness.

Mthembi and Ragwa­ la face many charges, among them conspiring to kill Mugwena in 2009.

They allegedly hired two “hit men”, who are now their co-accused in the case.

The case was last heard on 24 October 2013. So far, more than 10 witness­ es have already testified and the state has indi­ cated that it would call Joe Ragwala and Doris Mthembi, photographed during a previous 30 witnesses. Mr Vusi appearance in court.

Police on look-out for bogus colleges During the coming weeks, the Limpopo Police will work hand in hand with the Department of Education (DoE) to keep a watchful eye on students registering for their tertiary studies.

Provincial police spokesper­ son Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi said this week that the police have noticed with concern the increase in more bogus Further Education and Training (FET) colleges in some of the prov­ ince’s bigger towns.

“We know that it is the season where some criminals want to prey on unsuspecting learners by promising them a brighter future, when in fact they are destroying their lives.

We shall not allow this to happen and we will double our efforts, without fear, to uncover these crooks,” added provincial police commissioner Lt Gen Fanie Masemola.

Masemola and Mulaudzi urged students, especially those who did not get accepted at legit­ imate universities, not to register

with a bogus FET out of desper­ ation. If foul play is suspected, students may contact the DoE’s toll-free number at 0800 265 266 to verify a college’s registration details or report a bogus one.

“We want to ensure that those who appear to be running illegal and unregistered colleges are apprehended and receive pun­ ishment,” said Mulaudzi.

He warned that those run­ ning FETs without the proper licencing and registration might receive punishment of 10 years’ imprisonment or a fine of R250 000, or even both.

Man in court for possession of heroin A 48-year-old man recently appeared in the Musina Magistrate's Court in connection with a charge of being found in possession of illegal substances.

Kennedy Mukunkha Manda briefly appeared in court on 9 January and his case was postponed to this week Thursday.

Manda, a bus driver who originally came from Malawi, was arrested at Beit Bridge at about 10:30 on 19 December last year.

This came after a detector dog handler of cus­ toms discovered a package of yellow and white tablets inside the bus.

The official asked Manda if he knew anything about the package. "He allegedly responded that it was given to him by a Malawian person to de­ liver to another person in Johannesburg," said the spokesperson for Musina police, Const Dakalo Ramagwede.

Ramagwede had since confirmed that the tablets were counted and found as 983 white tablets and

998 yellow tablets.

The yellow tablets tested positive for brown heroin.

"The total street value of the drug is about R19 million," she said.

Manda appeared in court again on 16 January.

The information on the outcome of his case had not been available at the time of going press.

He added that the poverty relief programme is an on-going project.

The association normally spends about R120 000 monthly to purchase food and distribute it to people. "The programme has run throughout the years," Muvhali said.

At least 52 home-based caretakers and 14 community volunteers, who all get a reasonable monthly stipend, work at community field level and help the association in the selection of suitable candidates to benefit from the food programme.

Dopeni resident allegedly terrorises his family A 30-year-old man, Mr Benedict Ramafhi, caused shock waves in Dopeni in December when he allegedly tried to kill his sister’s children and his mother.

The incident happened on December 12 at Dopeni in the Nzhelele area. It left the family of the accused man terrified and living in fear.

The man allegedly stabbed his four nieces and his mother after a quarrel with his sister over the whereabouts of a cell phone.

He was initially involved in a fight with his sister, Ms Ndifelani Ramaru, that morning and allegedly stabbed her.

She was admitted to the hospital and later discharged.

According to preliminary reports, the suspect went back home later that night and asked the young ones if anyone had seen his sister.

Apparently he realised that his sister

was not at home and he could not find the phone he was looking for.

Phathutshedzo Mashavha (16) de­ scribed the incident as the worst nightmare of her life. She told Limpopo Mirror that the man tried to search for her sister’s phone and when he did not find it, he started quarrelling.

“When he came back home during the night, my grandma was asleep and my aunt was not around. He asked me who had taken the phone, and when I told him, he said that he should just kill the entire family and get arrested,” she said.

The girl described how the man then woke up his mother and took R1 800 from her. He then used a pick axe to hit the five family members over their heads before fleeing.

mother, Johanna Ramafhi (74), were injured during the attack. The youngest child, Ompha, was seriously injured and was transferred to Polokwane Hospital the following day.

Two of the children were admitted to Siloam Hospital, but have since been discharged.

The suspect, Benedict, was arrested by the police after a massive search in the area that lasted for three days. Siloam po­ lice spokesperson W/O Edward Tharaga confirmed the incident.

“We have opened five counts of at­ tempted murder. The suspect has already appeared in the Thohoyandou Magis­ trate’s Court and was remanded in cus­ tody,” he said.

R1 000 bail in Weipe “pellet gun” case A 27-year-old man recently appeared in the Musina Magistrate’s Court in connection with a murder case which allegedly happened near the boom gate at Weipe in Musina.

The case against Arifani Phanuel Khakhu was postponed to 13 February for further inves­ tigations.

According to the spokesper­ son for the Musina police, Const Dakalo Ramagwede, a group

of men were standing near the gate discussing soccer. The men allegedly heard the sound of a pellet gun about them and looked around to see what had happened.

“The owner of the gun said that he had put his pellet gun against the fence pole while dis­ cussing soccer with the others,” said Ramagwede. “When he checked, he found the deceased lying on the ground.”

It is alleged that one of the

men, who also happens to be the deceased’s long-time friend, had been holding the pellet gun and that he might have “accidentally shot his friend”. The police were notified about the incident, and Khakhu waited for the police to come and arrest him.

The owner of the pellet gun is not implicated in this case.

The deceased was later identi­ fied as Tshedza Ndou (27). Kha­ khu was granted R1 000 bail.

Local comedy worth watching Happiness at this time of the year is when you know that the gift of a locally made comedic movie brings laughter in people’s hearts.

Tshovhilingana 9 was released on 30 November last year, and the makers of this film and movie lov­ ers agree that the project is worth watching. “Last year was amazing in many ways,” said the scriptwriter and director, Khathutshelo “Tenden­ ya” Mamphodo. “Our audiences are happy that the project has improved in picture, sound and story quality.”

He reveals that they are now cap­ turing professional audio for the first time on their sets and have improved from DV to high-definition broadcast camera.

Just like with previous Tshovhil­ ingana projects, the storyline for Tshovhilingana 9 is diverse. The main character, Mr Bundu, played by Ntambudzeni Rasendedza, is a foolish and unemployed villager.

“Mr Bundu is a dishonest and lazy man,” said Mamphodo. “His efforts to fend for his family are always below par. The little money he ever gets does not last, as he squanders it on friends and showing off.”

The Tshovhilinga project stands as the most popular local comedy, and the secret behind this project’s success might also be attributed to talented actors who work together to create such a stunning project each year. Mamphodo states that, as local film makers, the biggest challenge was that they had little knowledge of filmmaking and lacked proper equipment when they did the first project in 2005.

“Another challenge was a lack of trust from potential cast members,” said Mamphodo. “People used to think we were out of our minds, be­ cause there was nothing like it (movie making) in Venda.” He conceptual­ ised the idea of Tshovhilingana after listening to his father’s traditional song by the same name.

“Piracy is still a thorny issue because this year, in Thohoyandou alone, we have 100 people selling fake Tshovhilingana DVDs,” he wor­ ries. “They team up and are overpow­ ering us when we try to stop them.”

He urges members of the community to refrain from buying pirated DVDs, saying: “Stop piracy before piracy stops us from making movies.”

Vuu and municipality disagree about land ownership The small community of Vuu in the Vuwani area has been at loggerheads with the Makhado Municipality about ownership of the land on which the community is currently living.

This is adversely hampering service delivery to the community of about 5 000 residents. The municipality says that the land rightfully belongs to the municipality after it was proclaimed and further main­ tains that the Vuu community is living on the land illegally.

On the other hand, the chief of the Vuu community, Vho-Nelson Ramathithi, said that they hadn’t invaded the land.

“Whom did they consult with during the proclamation process? And who facilitat­ ed the process? Did they visit this place and check for the evidence which shows that this is the place of our ancestors?”

Municipality, Mr Louis Bobodi, respond­ ed to our media inquiry. “Those people invaded the land; in other words, they are living on that land illegally,” Bobodi said. “They should engage us only on the issue of water and we will see how best we can provide them with water. They have a right to clean water, whether they are living on that land legally or illegally. We can only give them water - only water.”

The community’s representative, Mr Thabelo Nalana, said that they would visit the municipality once again and engage them not only on the issue of the unavailability of water. “We also need electricity in this dark and bushy village,” said Nalana. “We need services in this village; after all, we are the voters who vote for the leadership of this country.”

Beit Bridge pilot killed in helicopter crash in Zim A Gauteng-based Beit Bridge businessman, Mr Christian Malila Ndou, was killed on Sunday morning, when his Robinson R44 helicopter crashed and burst into flames in a mountainous area outside Gwanda town in Zimbabwe.

The incident occurred between 07:00 and 07:30 in a bushy area.

When the victim’s relatives arrived at the scene of the horrific crash, they man­ aged to identify the deceased and wept uncontrollably.

A man, believed to be his son, went berserk and ran away from the crash site before police apprehended and consoled him. Police spokes­p erson Sr Assistant Commissioner Charity Cha­ ramba con­ firmed the in­

cident, saying they were still investigating the cause of the crash.

She said they suspected Ndou could have been thrown out of the helicopter when it developed a fault and overturned mid-air before it crashed and caught fire.

“The helicopter’s propellers cut his body into pieces and his dismembered body was found almost 30 metres away from the scene. Some remains were found up to 50 metres away from the crash site.

Poor visibility may also have caused the tragedy,” she said.

Ndou, who ran a successful security company in Gauteng, farms in the Limpo­ po province and Beit Bridge and was fly­ ing alone at the time the accident occurred.

When Limpopo Mirror arrived at the scene, police were seen gathering his remains from the bushy area on a hilltop.

moments before it crashed said the pilot had circled above the town as if he was looking for a space to land.

Ndou was flying his four-seater aircraft alone from Bulawayo to Beit Bridge.

“The helicopter circled for some mo­ ments and I thought it was going to land somewhere in town before it headed southwards. It could have developed a mechanical fault,” said an onlooker. “The helicopter was flying very low and it made some terrible sound,” he added.

Mr Henry Raymond Hollins, a local resident who also owns a helicopter, said it was strange that the helicopter had crashed.

“A Robson R44 rarely crashes and I really wonder what could have happened,” Hollins said.

Local civil aviation officials are still conducting investigations into the tragedy.

Ramudzuli still gone

When the whole country was celebrating the festive season, the Ramudzuli family of Mapate outside Thohoyandou were trying to figure out what could have happened to a beloved member of their family.

Mr Avhasei Ramudzuli (35) disappeared on 22 November 2013 and has never been seen since.

The family has searched everywhere but with no success.

He was last seen wearing a pink-and-white shirt and green trousers.

He was not wearing shoes at the time of his disappearance.

CPA believes in unity to achieve more The beneficiaries of the Mamphodo Mishasha Begwa Communal Property Association (MMB CPA) can benefit from job creation on the CPA’s farm later this year.

This information emerged during the distribution of food parcels for the festive season and new year to beneficiaries.

“We will cultivate cash crops, such as spinach, cabbages, toma­ toes, butternuts and more,” said the deputy secretary, Vho-Dolly Ralubuvhi.

“We will also supply and make these products available to mem­ bers of the public and the fresh produce market.”

The deputy chairperson, Mr Samuel Ramurembiwa, made a

call for unity and cooperation among the beneficiaries.

Ramurembiwa is part of the newly elected committee in the CPA who strongly believes that the committee must stand united and work hand in glove with the beneficiaries. “We understand that we don’t have to undermine or ignore the beneficiaries’ input in making decisions on the farm,” he said. Beneficiaries were also given land orientation, so that they may get to know about their land.

At the moment, the MMB CPA raises operational funds through the leasing of land to cattle owners who need pastures for their livestock, game farming and house rentals.

“Things are starting to look brighter now, and once we have secured funding, we will initiate projects that will be part of job creation.”

One of the beneficiaries, Ms Mercy Thwalima, said that she was happy now that the CPA was seemingly taking a new direction with the new committee. “All that we want is job creation, so our children could have some employment,” she said.

“When things are finally on track and the farm starts gen­ erating enough money from its projects, then the introduction of a bursary scheme will be necessary. This bursary scheme will assist the youths to further their studies.”

Coveted award for Marcus Mundalamo The long music walk by famous Tshivenda artist Marcus Mundalamo finally paid off when he won the award as best Tshivenda traditional artist or group of the year.

This was during the 2013 edition of The Annual Tshivenda Music Awards (Tshima) recently held at the auditorium of Christ Worship House. He received a trophy and R10 000 cash.

Vhangoma people celebrates their cultural day A large group of Vhangona people celebrated their cultural day with singing and dancing at the Mapungubwe heritage site on Saturday.

The Vhangona people, who also called them­ selves Vho ngwani wa po, Tshidza tsha po and Ntangi wa kugala, among others, said celebrating their cultural day at Mapungubwe was part of priding themselves on being people who originated in Mapungubwe.

According to Mr Robert Rakhadani, spokesper­ son of the Vhangona, they want to celebrate their cultural day annually at Mapungubwe.

“We are trying to mobilize all Vhangona peo­ ple to come together as one nation and to revive our young people not to forget their culture and tradition. We have a sense of belonging because Mapungubwe is where Vhangona originated,” said Rakhadani.

Rakhadani said it was the wish of the Vhango­ na to work as a united people, so that they might understand developmental changes taking place in the country.

He added that they were also working closely with the Land Claims Commission “to reclaim our rights of the land of Mapungubwe”.

Thovhele Tshidziwelele Nephawe said he was happy to celebrate the day with his people.

Professorship in Greek for Dr Risimati Hobyane A scholar from Nkavele village near Malamulele, Risimati Hobyane, has just been promoted to the position of senior lecturer at the North West University (NWU).

The 37-year-old Hobyane now plans to focus on his new appoint­ ment as professor in theology at the Theological School of Reformed Churches in South Africa and Fac­ ulty of Theology of NWU – Potchef­ stroom Campus.

“I would also like to focus on establishing myself as a researcher and to publish both nationally and internationally,” he told Limpopo Mirror on Tuesday.

Prof Hobyane is lecturer in New Testament, focusing on Greek.

He started schooling at Hangal­ akani Primary School in 1983 and went on to matriculate in 1994 at Nghezimani High School. “But I rewrote matric in 1995 in order to achieve university admission,” he added.

In 1996 he had a ‘gap year’ due to financial problems. He enrolled for his teacher’s diploma in 1997 at Giyani College of Education, specialising in maths, chemistry and physical science.

He has an immense love for the­ ology as well as the Greek language.

His academic credentials speak volumes. In 2006, he completed his Masters Degree in practical

theology. The following year saw him being appointed as a lecturer in Greek in the faculty of theology of the NWU (Potchefstroom Cam­ pus). “In the same year I was also ordained as a minister of the Word in the Reformed Church Promosa of the GKSA,” he explains.

It also was in 2007 that he en­ rolled for a BA Hons in Greek. “In 2009, after an extensive examina­ tion, I was awarded masters status in Greek,” he recalls. “I immediately enrolled for a PhD in Greek.”

In all these years, Dr Hobyane had been participating in national congresses of the LXXSA (Study of Septuagint in SA) where he was also delivering papers. He subsequently published few national articles.

In 2012, he achieved his D Litt in Greek. His thesis, A Greimassian Analysis of the book of Judith, was accepted unanimously by all ap­ pointed examiners, with only minor changes. At the age of 34 then, Dr Hobyane was (and still remains) the youngest and only the second black South African scholar to achieve a D Litt in Greek.

While serving as a pastor and lecturer at the NWU, Dr Hobyane served in the committee of deputies of ecumenical relations within the Reformed Churches in South Africa and abroad, travelling to countries like the USA, Canada and East Af­ rica. He believes that any young person, by the grace of God Al­ mighty, is capable of achieving be­ yond what he has done. Controversy surrounds Thulamela Taxi rank project Hawkers, commuters and taxi owners who thought they would enjoy the use of the new multi-million-rand Thohoyandou Public Transport Intermodal Facility next to Eskom’s offices will have to wait a little longer.

This is contrary to promises by the Thu­ lamela mayor, Cllr Grace Mahosi, who, during a visit to the new facility last year,

said it would open for use before the end of 2013. Phase One of the project, the first of its kind in the province, with state-ofthe-art facilities, was started in 2011 and was envisaged to be completed by 2012.

The facility, which has offices for the taxi association, a recreational area for drivers, a security manning area, toilets, parking for taxis, stalls for hawkers, shops and an

attractive water feature next to the stalls, is believed to be one of the best devel­ opments to have come to Thohoyandou.

The delay in the opening has sparked rumours that all is not well at the project, with some saying that there are technical errors in the building that could lead to the building collapsing at any given time. This was met with a big “No” from the mayor and contractors, who referred to it as a malicious rumour.

Rumours flying around are that there are problems, which would need in excess of R20 million to rectify and it seems there is no money. “There is no way it will open any time soon, unless they come up with the money,” said one of the workers, who wanted to remain anonymous.

When asked for comment, Thulamela municipality spokesperson Mr Ndwamato Tshiila said the project was an initiative of the provin­ cial department of roads and transport. Limpopo Mirror contacted Limpopo Roads and Transport spokesperson Mr Jimmy Machaka, who Thulamela Mayor Cllr Grace Mahosi (third from left) and members of her executive council confirmed that there are some are shown the new facility. “Dysfunctional” school’s results improve dramatically Ozias Davhana High School’s matric performance has improved drastically from the 33% they obtained in 2009 to a 94.3% pass rate last year.

The school was previously known to be “dys­ functional” for many years. Last year’s pass rate of 94,3% is the school’s highest since they opened their doors in 1990.

In May 2012, the school programmes were not going well as there were conflicts between two principals that shared one office, causing confusion among pupils, teachers and parents. The problem reached its climax last year when parents locked the school’s gates, seeking the Department of Education’s intervention.

In an interview with Limpopo Mirror, the principal, Mr Morris Chauke, said that they had worked much harder to change the culture of the

school in many respects, addressing most crucial issues, including social ills, academic performance, commu­ nication and stakeholder involvement in the educational affairs of the school. “This rewarded us with great improvement in the results. We are determined to get a 100% pass from this year on.”

He said there was no miracle re­ garding the good results, but rather commitment from the teachers and

pupils. He added that, at the beginning of each year, they do a thorough post mortem of the matric results and con­ centrate on an improvement strategy.

According to him, the turnaround at the school started with instilling a sense of discipline among the pupils and the staff and “the results speak for themselves.”

He said that parental involvement has also increased since his arrival at the school.

Can Black Leopards beat the Warriors?

It remains to be seen whether Black Leopards will manage to stand against all odds and emerge victorious in their league match against African Warriors at the Puthaditshaba Stadium in the Free State on Sunday afternoon.

Leopards must win the match at all cost in order to remain in the league title race. They are currently lying in the fourth spot with 23 points, seven behind the pace setters, Chippa United, who have played a match more than Lidoda Duvha.

Apart from the fact that Leopards desperately need the points for the match, the two sides have unfinished business.

Leopards want to exact revenge for the 1-2 de­ feat they suffered at the hands of Warriors at the Seshego Stadium in their first-round league match five months ago. When asked about their state of readiness for the match, the Leopards coach, Mr Kostadin Papic, said that all his charges were razor sharp. He indicated that the mood is good in the camp after beating the Democratic Republic of Congo’s national team in their friendly match last Thursday.

The match will now be played on a date and venue still to be announced by the league.

Chippa United are now leading the pack. This follows their 3-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers last Friday. Vasco da Gama collected maximum points in their home match against Santos FC. The goal which earned Vasco da Gama the points came via Lawrence Sefako three minutes into the last half.

Thanda Royal Zulu registered their second vic­ tory by beating Witbank Spurs 3-2. Royal Zulu are still languishing at the bottom of the log with only 10 points from 15 outings.

Sivutsa Stars suffered a 1-3 defeat at the hands of Baroka FC. Baroka moved two steps up the log following the result. They now have 22 points in their league account.

Milano United shared the spoils with FC Cape Town at the Grassy Park Stadium in Cape Town.

They played to a 2-2 draw. Milano United, who have been leading the pack from the beginning of the season, moved to the second spot after the draw.

Maluti FET College played to a 2-2 draw with African Warriors at the Charles Mopedi Stadium in Phuthaditshaba, Free State. Jomo Cosmos lost 1-2 to United FC at the Moruleng Stadium in Rustenburg.

The duo watched last weekend’s game against Joe’s Express from the Makwarela Stadium’s grandstand. Rumour has it that the two had requested transfer letters from the club.

None of the club officials could confirm that.

The former Rospa United play­ maker, Marks Munyai, will be playing against his former team mates. Munyai left the United camp early this season in search of greener pastures.

Joe’s Express must continue to deposit league points into their league account in order to remain in the league title race. They will host Mighty FC at the Makwarela Stadium tomorrow.

Bellevue Winners will fight for league points against Mose­ setjane All Stars at the Nkow­ ankowa Stadium in Tzaneen.

Giyani Hotspurs will travel to Polokwane.

EXEMPTION APPLICATION: In terms of Public Participation, exemption from the following Regulations have been applied for, due to the strict deadline of 31 March 2014, set for documentation to be submitted to the competent authority for decision-making: GN R. 543 (1)(a); GN R. 543 (1)(b); GN R. 543 (56)(7) and 56(8).

New soccer kit for Tshitale’s youngsters The station commissioner of the SAPS in Tshitale, Lt Col Mavhungu Madavhu, said there was no better way to unite and strengthen the community than using sports.

She said this when she re­ ceived a soccer kit from HBE Transport at Mashamba Village last Friday.

Madavhu said there had been a decrease in criminal youth ac­ tivities in the Tshitale area since the launch of the Youth Against Crime project.

She mentioned that the youths were engaged in several activi­

ties meant to keep them “off the streets. "With the cooperation from other community stake­ holders, we engage the youths in different crime-prevention activities, including sports tour­ naments.”

The managing director of HBE Transport, Mr Reckson Mashamba, said it touched his company after learning that the youth were playing soccer without proper sports attire. He said the young ones were a true example. He commended them for keeping themselves fit. "You are not only winding up time by

playing soccer.

You are keeping your bodies healthy and you must remember that a healthy body has a healthy mind.”

One of the youths, Hlulani Hangwani, called on other youths from other areas to follow suite in the war against crime. "Life has improved in our area since we started working with the SAPS. I encourage others to do the same because we have solid testimony that it works. I enjoy the project and we have already seen the positive results it brought to our community."

Disappointing draw for Pat Mates Tshiozwi Pat Mates have only themselves to blame for their failure to beat Gogobole Bucs in the Limpopo Dairy match played at the Tshiozwi grounds on Sunday.

The well-attended match ended in a 2-2 draw.

Mates could have wrapped up the match during the first half, were it not for their strikers. Fhulufhelo Mulaudzi squandered two obvious chances during

the first 15 minutes. He received a marvellous pass from Doctor Masingi and shot wide with only keeper Moses Mukwevho to beat.

It was not surprising that the Bucs scored the first goal. Midfielder Lutendo Nndwambi supplied a neat pass to find Elelwani Marubini, who had no problem in putting the ball into the back of the net with a powerful shot. The shot gave Mates’ keeper, Andries Masingi, no chance.

Mates blundered by playing aerial balls from behind, instead of cooling it down and dishing telling passes to their front runners. Fulufhelo ”Rio” Ramabu­ lana scored the second goal of his team, to make the half-time score 2-0.

In the second half, the local boys came with a new pattern and scored in the 49th minute via Murendeni ”Mabogi” Tshida­ da. He received an excellent pass from Mbavhalelo Thathaisa and did not waste any time to place a shot in the far corner.

Mates replaced Doctor Masingi with Mpho Malema and continued to put pressure on the lads from Gogobole.

Murendeni Tshidada completed his brace when he scored his team’s second and the equaliser in the dying minutes.

Victory for Rockers Rockers continued to pave their way up the log by beating Gwamasenga United Brothers 1-0 in their MMK Funeral Services League match at the Gwamasenga grounds on Sunday.

United’s front runners, Ipfi Muthubi and Lesley Khomola, did not live up to the fans’ expectations as they were tight­ ly marked. United Brothers threatened to score in the 11th minute. Muthubi won the loose ball in the 35­meter area and unleashed a volley just outside the penalty box.
