Thabiso Matenda, a 28-year-old bank consultant for the Makhado branch of First National Bank (FNB) in Louis Trichardt was arrested on 10 June by the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit for allegedly stealing R36 989 051.67 belonging to a deceased client.

“It is alleged that on 25 April 2022, the suspect, who was an FNB consultant at Makhado branch, opened the profile of the client who had just died in a vehicle accident a day before (24 April 2022) without any authorisation.

It is further alleged that the suspect connived with his accomplice to open a new bank account and linked it to the deceased’s account and started spending all the money from

the deceased’ account,” said provincial Hawk’s spokesperson Captain Matimba Maluleke in a press statement.

According to Maluleke, these illegal activities were discovered by the bank and a case of fraud and theft was opened with the Hawks. “When the suspect was approached by the bank managers about the matter, he reportedly tendered his resignation letter with immediate effect,” said Maluleke.

During further investigation, some of the stolen money was found to have been used to buy expensive cars and donated to a certain church.

Matenda appeared in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court on Monday and his case was postponed until Friday, 17 June. According to Maluleke, more arrests are expected.

The deceased boy’s father, Mr Nelson Mathivha, said he spoke to his son last week. “I was in bed at around 20:00 when I heard his voice in the house. I told him to go to his room, with the hope of finding him there. I thought that at last our nightmares were over, but when I went to his room, only the lights were on; the boy was nowhere to be found. We are still consulting those who know, and they are giving us hope that he will finally come back home forever,” he said.

Ndamulelo’s sister, Ms Rudzani Mathivha, said they were praying day and night for his return. “While he died in my hands, he told me he would rise from the dead. Over the last few days, he has been visiting me in my sleep. I see him, but I cannot touch him. With the latest developments, I believe it is just a matter of time before he comes back home for good. I am on my way to a prayer session as we speak, and I believe that God will perform a miracle,” she said.

The traumatised children informed the elders on their arrival home and the matter was reported to the local police.

The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lt Gen Thembi Hadebe, said that a manhunt for the suspects had been launched.

She urged community members with information that could assist with the unfolding investigations to come forward, so that the culprits could be brought to book as speedily as possible.

The Limpopo MEC for the Department of Education, Polly Boshielo, expressed her shock at the rape of the two girls. “We are appalled by this incident. It is shocking that those who should be protecting our children are the ones who prey on them. No stone must be left unturned to ensure that these perpetrators are arrested and brought to book without delay. Learners deserve protection wherever they are, whether inside or outside the school,” she said.

The MEC for Social Development, Nkakareng Rakgoale, also condemned the attack on the young girls. “This atrocious act was a direct violation of the children’s rights. We urge communities to work with government to ensure that children are always protected and cared for,” she said.

Chabalala is well known in the Vhembe District, and his foundation staged a very successful soccer tournament in Malamulele two weeks ago.

Chabalala appeared in the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in Palm Ridge, Gauteng, on Monday. He had allegedly defrauded the City of Joburg by creating requests for quotes (RFQs) for companies that had been awarded tenders. Chabalala did not work for the municipality but ran his own private business.

The State alleges that Chabalala had colluded with City of Joburg employees, who helped him create the RFQs that led to tenders’ being awarded to select companies.

In some cases, duplicate invoices would be created, and double payments would be made.

Chabalala was released after paying R4 000 bail and the case was postponed until 12 July. More arrests are expected to follow in connection with the alleged fraud.

The Vhalweli Foundation, an NPO situated in Vleifontein, donated 38 pairs of shoes to the children of Vari Primary School in Ha-Nthabala Village. Ha-Nthabalala village is situated just outside Vleifontein, and a large section of the community lives in abject poverty, surviving only through various social grants. The Vhalweli Foundation deals with social-relief programmes in Vleifontein and the surrounding communities of Ha-Munzhedzi and Ha-Maila. One of the projects the NPO runs, involves collecting shoes donated by local people and businesses and then identifying schools to give the shoes to. “We try to get as many school shoes as we can to cater for all these schools that are in our database,” said the chairperson of the foundation, Mr Takalani Mulaudzi. The principal of Vari Primary, Mr Rambau, thanked the NPO for the donation and said that it meant a lot to the children, who came from very poor backgrounds. Concern over overloaded taxis after 40 children are injured in crash

Forty school children escaped with minor injuries when the overloaded taxi they were travelling in collided with another taxi and crashed into bushes at Ravele in the Sinthumule area on Friday, 10 June. The children were rushed to the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital and discharged the same day.

Police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo said that the driver had lost control of the overloaded vehicle, which should have been carrying no more than 15 passengers, and hit another taxi before it had driven into the bushes.

“Preliminary police investigations revealed that overloading might have been the cause, as there were 40 passengers on board. We have opened a case of reckless and negligent driving against the driver. Further charges may be brought against him, pending the outcome of police investigations,” he said.

One of the parents of the children who had been involved in the accident said they had lodged several complaints about the overloaded taxi

before but that the driver had ignored them. He said that taxis that transported learners overloaded their vehicles to “make a quick buck”, which ultimately compromised the passengers’ safety.

“When we complain about the overloading, we are bullied and told not to use their ‘only means’ of transport again, if that is how we feel. We have also complained to the local traffic department, which promised to look into the matter, but nothing is happening. We are pleading with the authorities to act now, before more children’s lives are lost,”

he said.

On Monday, 13 June, 19 learners from Thengwe High School were rushed to hospital after the taxi they were travelling in collided with an oncoming vehicle. No-one was seriously injured.

Her absence did become a source of concern when her sister ran into one of her neighbours at a recent funeral and, after enquiring after Bandu, was told that she (the neighbour) had not seen her for some time either.

A search by relatives ensued, and on Saturday, 4 June, her body was found only a few metres from the back of her house. She had a deep stab wound to her neck.

According to family members, they were told by neighbours that Bandu had gone over to her nephew’s house very late on the night of 2 June, to demand her SASSA card from him, which he had kept for her. The nephew lives in the same village, not far from where Bandu lived. Neighbours claim that Bandu had been drunk and was yelling at him. What followed, nobody knows, but Bandu’s next-door neighbour said that she had not seen her since that night.

Bandu’s son, Mr Robert Neduvhuledza, said he had received a call from the nephew later that same night (2 June), enquiring about her whereabouts. “I told him to check with relatives and when he did not come back to me, I accepted that he must have found her. It was only after we were informed

that she had been missing for some days that we started to search at her house, where we found her body behind her one-room house, with the wound to her neck. A walking stick was also found not far from her body,” he said.

Neduvhuledza said the family members were still trying to come to terms with the incident. “We know of course that she was not well mentally, but that did not warrant that she should be killed like an animal.

Whoever killed her, did it for a reason. We have put all our hopes in the police, who are investigating the circumstances around her death. Still, we have so many questions boggling our minds. How could she take her SASSA card in the wee hours of the night and just disappear? We believe the missing card will give a clue as to what had happened to her,” he said.

Limpopo police spokesperson Lt Col Mamphaswa Seabi confirmed that a case of murder was opened, following the discovery of Bandu’s body.

“No one has been arrested so far and police investigations are ongoing.” Seabe asked that anyone with information about the incident please contact their nearest police station.

Musina’s mufuvha players want to keep this traditional game alive Traditional Games

The Together in Christ Church has donated 19 25kg bags of maize meal to needy families at Tshiombo in memory of the late Pastor Nndweleni Nelson Mathoho. The pastor, who passed away on April 24, 2018, was also the founder of the church. The church, now under the leadership of his wife, Grace Mathoho, continued this practice of handing out food parcels to the needy. Last Sunday, the church donated maize mealie to the needy, including Zimbabwean nationals and pensioners. Those who received bags of mealie-mealie included non-members of the church. Vhamusanda Vho-Tovhowani Mathoho, who also graced the occasion, said he was proud of the work done at the church. “As a traditional leader, you would know that it is our responsibility to look after those who are in need. Dhliwayo says one of the best things about the mufuvha group is that they undertake trips away to play against opponents outside Musina. “This allows us to experience life outside Musina and to see how people from other areas live. We have made friends with many people from other areas through this game, whom we visit from time to

time. We encourage other men from around to come and join us, so that we can continue to build new friendships, while preserving this traditional game of ours,” he said.

Dhwiwayo’s sentiments are echoed

by Dennis Sithole, whose love for mufuvha cannot be compared to anything else. “This is the best game ever. Once you get hooked on mufuvha, you will never love another game again.

As men, we enjoy playing this game because it encourages unity and keeps traditions alive.”

While many people today prefer to move with the times and keep themselves busy with the endless selection of entertainment that modern so­ciety has to offer, a group of men from Musina has vowed to ensure that traditional games do not disappear into the background.

The group of more than 20 men meet every afternoon to play mufuvha, an age-old, traditional, mind-stimulating game known to unite men. The game is played with small stones, called thoga, on a flat, rectangular board with holes. Each player gets a number of stones. The challenge is to move these stones from hole to hole towards their opponent to seize all their stones – a lot like the game of checkers.

Mashudu Dhliwayo has been playing mufuvha for the past 10 years now and says that the game is very good for enhancing concentration. “You need to fully concentrate on the game if you want to win. It sharpens the mind because you need to calculate your moves while at the same time monitoring your opponent’s moves. It is important for young boys to join us, so that we can also teach them how to play this beautiful game.”

Sadly, this came from a prominent community leader who spoke to me the past week. Much like the mob’s members, the “leader” preferred anonymity.

Some community members go as far as saying even if they [the criminals] are convicted and sentenced in a court of law, the country’s jails these days are like free hotels where criminals enjoy life more than job seekers in this country.

If ever we had to look back in history for guidance, that time is now. Acts of vigilantism will not solve the problem; they will simply cause the deaths of many innocent people, just like what happened in the early 1990s, when many of our grannies were simply murdered.

The problem is crime and this needs to be addressed. It implies that a crooked politician is not to be honoured.

The official who accepts the bribe is to be scorned, and the businessman or -woman who pays the bribe should be despised. The person who buys the stolen goods has the blood on his or her hands of the victim who was killed to get the goods.

We need to root out the causes of crime, not lash out at what we perceive to be the symptoms.

Setback for Makhado municipality in PAIA court case

By Anton van Zyl The Makhado Municipality’s efforts to avoid disclosing information about dodgy property transactions suffered a setback in the Limpopo High Court on Friday morning when their appeal against an earlier judgement was struck off the roll.

The municipality had appealed against a magistrate’s court ruling ordering it to disclose all documentation relating to the transactions.

The Makhado Magistrate’s Court made the ruling in September 2020 in the matter of Zoutnet CC vs the Makhado Municipality. Zoutnet CC is the publisher of the Limpopo Mirror and Zoutpansberger newspapers.

Magistrate Vanessa Grundlingh ordered the municipality to grant the publishing company access to records that had been requested in terms of a Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA) application.

The first PAIA application was sent to the municipality almost a year earlier, in October 2019. The documents requested relate to the sale of a public park in Louis Trichardt,

Limpopo.

The park was divided into two sites, which were offered for sale by public tender. The tenders were, however, not awarded to the highest bidders.

One section of the property was, in fact, sold to the lowest bidder. The other section was sold to a bidder who offered R450 000 less than the highest bidder.

The municipality would have been paid R850 000 more for the two erven, had it accepted the highest bids.

At the time, the municipality refused to make specific information about the transaction available to the media.

Requesting information to find out who the successful bidders were, took weeks. But even then, the correct names of the companies were not supplied.

The municipality also refused to give any reasons as to why the highest bids had not been accepted.

Papers were served on the municipality in March 2020, indicating that the court would be asked to rule on the matter.

The case then made its way to the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court, where the date for hearing was set as 12 April 2020. This was unopposed by the municipality and a default judgement was expected.

However, in April that year, the country went into hard lockdown and all cases were postponed.

When the matter was put on the roll again, the municipality suddenly woke up and decided to oppose the application in court. It argued, among other things, that the applicant had

never provided reasons why the information was sought and that to adhere to such requests would be a waste of officials’ valuable time. The municipality further argued that the successful bidders should have been notified of the application and should have consented to the information’s being made available.

In her ruling in September 2020, magistrate Grundlingh brushed aside the municipality’s arguments and pointed out that a person who requests information from a public body, such as the municipality, does not need to prove that any right is sought or that any right needs to be protected. The municipality is obliged to make the information available, within the ambits of the PAIA. The municipality was ordered to make the information available within 15 days and pay costs.

The municipality still argued that the successful bidders should have been contacted for their consent. The matter then dragged on for several more months, with the municipality’s legal representatives seemingly in no hurry to push for a hearing.

Judge Kgomo described this as a complete mess and chaotic. He and judge Tshidada criticised Adv Nthambeleni for the sloppiness and said that this was in contravention of the court rules. Because of this chaotic situation, the case was to be struck from the roll.

I used to play hockey while I was still a learner at the local Eric Louw High School.

Besides that, I closely follow various sporting codes, which gives me in-depth knowledge on different subject matters,” he said.

Maila’s busy day begins at the crack of dawn each morning. He rises at 05:00 and starts getting ready for the day ahead. “At 07:00, I do my formal work as administration officer at the Rihoshiba Private School. At 14:00, I start with extra maths and science lessons for young learners around Musina. By 17:00, I start working on advertisements and production for my sports show, and this is how my work day ends.”

Radio interview has opened many doors for talented MC Mudifho Entertainment When comedian and motivational speaker Nthuleni Radzilani, famously known as MC Mudifho, got invited as a guest on Phalaphala FM presenter Humbulani Nengovhela’s Nambi ya dzinambi show on Saturday, 4 June, nobody was prepared for his unexpectedly pleasant voice and rib-cracking jokes.

Those who did not know about him were pleasantly surprised that the tiny village of Khubi housed such a great talent.

At 23, Radzilani is also a master of ceremonies (MC) of note and a powerful preacher of the word of

God. He shared how this memorable moment on Phalaphala FM came about: “I was MC at an event to empower the disabled in Thohoyandou last month. As usual, I steered the ship very well and everyone was happy with my jokes and how I handled the audience.

I was not aware that Humbulani Nengovhela from Phalaphala FM was among the audience, though.

After the event, Nengovhela invited me to be his guest of honour at the SABC studios in Thohoyandou.”

This, he said, had opened many doors for him. “I enjoyed sitting behind the microphone with the presenter for two hours and the listeners did not want the programme to come to an end.

It was a great feeling. After the

programme, I received many calls from people who invited me to different kinds of events as master of ceremonies and comedian. My diary is almost full with bookings for the next three months because of the exposure I got from Phalaphala FM.” Radzilani started entertaining people as a high school student at Mphalaleni High in Matangari.

“Every time I opened my mouth, my fellow students and teachers cracked up. Sometimes the teachers asked me to open the morning devotions with a passage from the Bible and prayer, or to deliver a motivational speech to the learners during exams. I was eventually invited to be part of the Khubvi Community Theatre, where I played lead roles in a few plays.

That was when I realized that I had a unique talent that I could use to change my life and the lives of those around me.”

The young man, who has great compassion for disabled people, plans to host a talent search for disabled people at the Thohoyandou Arts Centre on Saturday, 9 July. “We have a lot of talented disabled people, but most of them lack exposure because they don’t get the necessary support. This will be my way of ploughing back into the communities that have supported me through my work as a motivational speaker, master of ceremonies and comedian.”

While studying for a BSc degree in landscape architecture at the University of Pretoria, she also broke into a male-dominated industry and became a very popular DJ. Sebata, from Ramantsha village in the Sinthumule area, used to envy other DJs playing music at different local events in the area where she grew up. “I would listen to radio shows where DJs were being interviewed,” she said.

She developed a special love of House music.

While studying, she decided that she wanted to become a top DJ. Looking for events at which she could play was not easy as this is not considered to be the domain of women.

She battled to find people who could help her reach her dream.

Sebata said that when a person starts off in this career, people assume he or she is there just for the money and freebies or only trying

to be famous. “Although it was difficult to find a breakthrough, hard work and dedication brought out the best in me,” she said.

Only in 2017 did her talent start receiving the recognition it deserves. She has since become a household name in South Africa.

This is the first health centre in the history of the Makhado Municipality to accommodate different health practitioners under one roof,” she said.

This award was announced on the day and the winning learner received a backpack with stationery and a trophy.

The winner was also given the honour of officially opening the new store.

The mayor of the Collins Chabane Local Municipality, Cllr Moses Maluleke, emphasised that an effective and committed leadership, combined with a professional and competent workforce, is necessary for a municipality that aims to fulfil its obligation to deliver services to the community.

Maluleke delivered his state-of-the-municipality address (SOMA) at the Malamulele hall on Friday, 10 June.

latest technology to achieve this. Government, business, labour and civil society need to work together to create a municipality that is conducive.

All citizens of Collins Chabane have to play an active role in their communities to improve people’s lives and ensure their elected leaders deliver,” Maluleke said.

“We need to ensure that, in the next five years, our town continues retaining the status of being among the cleanest towns in the province [and that] waste removal service is done every day,” he said.

Maluleke further said that a significant improvement with regards to audit findings in the municipality had taken place. “We have welcomed the auditor-general’s (AG) presen-

tation of the unqualified audit opinion for the year 2019/20 and 2020/21, and apart from the unqualified audit, we have also received an award for the best municipality infrastructure grant (MIG) spending municipality.”

“The operational revenue budget for the medium-term revenue and expenditure framework (MTREF) budget is R698, 516 million (for 2022/23), which will focus more on how the municipality will be transformed in the next five years, to become a better place to work and live in it. They had another golden opportunity to open the score when their reliable central defender, Rolivhuwa Muhali, headed straight into the hands of goalkeeper Mmbengeni, who saved it comfortably. The score was 0-0 at half time.

In the second half, Peace Makers started to control the game from the midfield, where their midfield general Zacharia Makhale took the game to his opponents. His swift passes and running off the ball created space for his central midfield partner, Mulalo Mudzanani, who started to trouble the United Brothers defence, but Rolivhuwa Muhali stood firm at the back.

In the 70th minute, Makhale started a move from the left flank, passed the ball to Mulalo Mudzanani, who released a defence-splitting pass to the gallant Muvhuso Nevikili, who failed to beat the keeper from close range. In the dying minutes of the game, United Brothers’ left winger, Lavhelesani Nemakhavhani, nearly scored from a goal-mouth scramble.

The killer striker of Papas, Baldwin Sipheyi, was a difficult man to mark. He eluded the Blackpool defence as he kept running from the start of the match.

Sipheyi of Papas broke the ice in the sixth minute. A defender of Papas handled the ball inside the penalty area and the referee did not hesitate to point at the white spot. Rowen Thovhakale was tasked to convert, and he made no mistake.

Not long after this goal, Muladelo Ndou of Blackpool caught the keeper of Papas offguard. The goal acted as a catalyst for Papas.

By Kaizer Nengovhela The Masakona Grounds will be a beehive of activity this weekend. The quarter- and semi-finals of the Brothers 1391 Foundation’s annual soccer tournament will be played on 16 and 18 June at this venue.

The men behind the foundation are former Orlando Pirates and current Pretoria Callies player Meshack Maphangule and TS Galaxy defender Marks

Sixteen teams started competing in the tournament last weekend. The teams participating in the event are all affiliated with the Safa Vhembe SAB League and the local football associations (LFAs).

Marks Munyai said that the champions would receive R21 000, a floating trophy, a soccer kit and gold medals. The runners-up will take home a cash prize of R10 000, silver medals and soccer kit, while

the team that finishes in the third place will be presented with a cash prize of R5 000 and bronze medals.

The fixture for Thursday (16th) are: All Stars vs Tiyani FC at 09:00, Makhitha Oscar Stars vs Manamani Blue Birds at 11:00. The last match of the day will be played at 15:00 and will see the youthful team of Mashamba Soccer Academy test their strength against Masakona Young Tigers.

They finally found the equaliser through Mukandangalwo Ramunana, who beat the keeper with a header in the dying minutes of the game.

The winner was determined through penalty shootout as the score was 2-2 at the end of the regulation time. United Artists managed to convert five of their chances, while Peace Makers could score only four times from the white spot.

Madridtas did not show any respect to their opponents, despite the fact that Bullets had two professional players, Rendani Ndou and Joshua Netshilindi, in their starting 11.

Bullets did not press the panic button, although Madridtas were dictating terms during the first 15 minutes of the game. Instead, they continued to try to play their normal football, despite the fact that they could hardly make three perfect moves.

Madridtas soon realised that Saturday was not their day when they missed a fortune in the 24th minute. A defender of Bullets handled the ball within his own penalty area, prompting the referee, Mr Eric Munyai, to award a penalty to Madridtas. Pfunzo “Sdumo” Tshikotshi caused an upset by shooting wide from the penalty spot.

The penalty seemed to be a wake-up call to the Bullets’ midfielders. They took the game to Madridtas soon afterwards. No goal was seen during the first half.

Madridtas strengthened their midfield by replacing Oriphulusa Netshishivhe with Phumudzo Makhanthisa. Bullets responded by introducing Phathutshedzo Nemagovhani and Mulisa Muebi for Mulamuleli Netshidzivhe and Maanda Rembuluwani respectively.

Bullets were awarded a free kick just outside the penalty box after Rendani Ndou was badly tackled by Tendani Rasivhendele. Tsiko Masikhwa beat the keeper with a half volley from the free kick to put his team into the lead.

Makonde Brazil were by far too good for Ngudza Young Vultures when they crushed them 2-0 in their quarter-final match of the Nwali Soccer Tournament that was played at the Khubvi Benjies Grounds on Sunday.

The game was a see-saw battle as both sides managed to create enough scoring chances, which they failed to convert to goals.

Young Vultures were the first to take a shot at the goal box. They did so in the eighth minute after their left winger, Mulweli Matoro, received a neat pass from Khuliso Mushadu and unleashed a ground cutter from inside the box. The ball went far wide, much to the fans’ disappointment.

Matoro came close to scoring four minutes afterwards. He forced his way through the defence of Brazil and lost possession just before he could unleash from the edge of the box.

Brazil took control of the game towards the end of the first half. They were rewarded with a goal in the 40th minute. Lindelani Rapholo gave the ball the final touch after a scramble within the box.
