Nie net het die bewolkte toestande oor die Soutpansberg die afgelope week verligting gebring ten opsigte van die versengende somerhitte nie, maar ook welkome reën. Oom Willie Agenbacht van Makhado (Louis Trichardt) hou al vir jare pligsgetrou reënval statistiek. “Sedert die reën verlede Vrydag begin het, het ek al 160mm gemeet,” sê oom Willie wat elke dag om 18:00 ‘n lesing neem by sy huis in Malvastraat. Vrydag het hy 1mm gemeet, Saterdag 19mm, Sondag 2mm, Maandag 27mm, Dinsdag 44mm en teen Woendagoggend was daar reeds 70mm in sy reënmeter. Aangesien oom Willie soveel jaar al statistiek hou van die dorp se reënval, was die vraag aan hom of die huidige reënval normaal is vir hierdie tyd van die jaar. “Die laaste paar jaar was dinge redelik deurme kaar wat reënval hier betref en was dit moeilik om ‘n patroon te bepaal. Intussen blyk dit dat die nat toestande vir nog ‘n hele paar dae gaan duur. Nou wanneer moet jy betaal? Hoe verbruikersvriendelik is die nuwe parkeerstelel in Makhado (Louis Tri chardt). Skaars drie weke nadat die stelsel deur die Makhado Munisipaliteit in werking gestel is, is daar talle vrae by inwoners oor hoe die stelsel nou eintlik veronderstel is om te werk? Die nuwe stelsel, wat aan die privaat maatskappy Rirothe Trading & Invest ment (RTI) uitgekontrakteer is, het op 1 Desember verlede jaar in werking getree. Ingevolge die nuwe stelsel moet moto riste vooraf hul parkeergeld aan beamptes betaal wat die sypaadjies beman met ‘n elektroniese handtoestel. Dit is egter juis by die betaal stadium wat die verwarring insluip, aangesien baie inwoners ingelig word dat hulle eers wanneer hulle terug keer na hul voertuie hoef te betaal. Een inwoner, Tienie Viljoen, het oor ‘n periode van twee weke by drie geleent

So ‘n fasiliteit is wel beskikbaar vir die stelsel en word met groot sukses in ander dorpe aangewend. RTI het egter nie vir ‘n drukkerfasiliteit gevra nie. RTI se personeelbestuurder, mnr. Dominic Mahlangu, het in ‘n onderhoud dit duidelik gestel dat die nuwe stelsel ‘n vooraf betaalde stelsel is. ‘n Beampte is veronderstel om, die oomblik as ‘n motoris geparkeer het, die voertuig se registrasienommer in sy toestel in te sleutel. Daarna moet daar ‘n kaartjie ingevul word waarop die datum, registrasienommer van die voertuig, tyd van parkering en wanneer die parkering verstryk, die bedrag betaal en die naam van die beampte verskyn. Dié kaartjie moet binne die voertuig (by die wind skerm) vertoon word. Indien die kaartjie nie vertoon word nie, kan ‘n verkeersbeampte ‘n boete uitreik. Mahlangu het gesê hulle beamptes is nie gemagtig om boetes uit te reik nie. Volgens hom is dit die beamptes se werk om bloot verkeersbeamptes te help om te bepaal watter voertuie se parkeertyd verstryk het.

Raad wil nie historiese skilderye verkoop nie

Eric Louw weer een van top Lim-skole Hoërskool Eric Louw in Musina is weereens as een van die top 30 skole in die Limpopo Provinsie aangewys. Tydens die bekendmaking van die November 2012 provin siale uitslae by The Ranch Hotel buite Polokwane, het Eric Louw ‘n trofee en sertifikaat ter

erkenning van die uitstaande prestasie behaal. Hierdie toekenning is ver werf op grond van die skool se slaagsyfer van 96.9 %, met slegs twee druipelinge uit die groep van 64. Volgens die hoof, mev. Co bie Mostert, het die matrieks en

personeel baie hard gewerk en is hulle baie dankbaar vir die leerlinge se prestasies. “Ons is baie bly om voort te bou op ‘n trotse tradisie, aan gesien die skool die afgelope paar jaar telkens deel is van die groep topskole in die Limpopo Provinsie,” het Mostert gesê.

Die Makhado Munisipaliteit gaan nie die kultuurhistoriese skilderye van die skilder C.R. de Wet van Wyk aan die Van Wyk-afstammelinge verkoop nie. Die kleinseun van die skilder was teleurgestel en verslae toe hy verneem dat die munisipaliteit nie die skilderye van sy oorlede oupa aan die familie wil verkoop nie. “Dit sal verlore gaan vir die nageslag,” het mnr. De Wet van Wyk hierdie week gesê. Die vyf olieverf skilderye, wat in opdrag van die destydse Louis Trichardt Stadsraad geskilder is, is meer as ‘n dekade gelede van die mure van die raadsaal verwyder. Sover vasgestel kon word, word die skilderye tans in ‘n kluis geberg. “Die skilderye is bates van die munisipaliteit en ons is nie van plan om dit te verkoop nie. Ons ondersoek egter nog die moontlikheid om dit aan ‘n nasionale museum oor te dra,” het die munisipaliteit Dinsdag die Zoutpansberger per e-pos laat weet. Van Wyk het alreeds in 2005 ‘n aanbod aan die munisipaliteit gemaak om die skilderye terug te koop en het sy aanbod in Oktober verlede jaar herhaal. Hy is glad nie in kennis gestel van die besluit om nie die skilderye te verkoop nie. “Dit is baie teleurstellend. Die skilderye word nie in die burgersentrum ten toon gestel nie, maar hulle wil dit ook nie verkoop nie. Die sentiment rondom die skilderye lê in ons omgewing, maar hulle wil dit wegstuur. Watse nasionale museum is hier behalwe die Schoemansdal Museum, wat

Die skilderye beeld grepe uit Louis Trichardt se dagboek uit, soos ‘n nagmaaltoneel, ‘n renosterjag, ‘n gesinstoneel in ‘n hartbeeshuisie en ‘n onderwystoneel waar kinders en ‘n onderwyser onder ‘n boom sit, terwyl die skoolgeboutjie se dak met riete gedek word. Die familie sê dat hulle nie die optrede van die munisipaliteit en hulle redes verstaan nie. “Ek vind dit moeilik om die sisteem te vertrou en die skilderye in hulle besit te vertrou,” het mnr. Van Wyk gesê. Me. Sharp increase recorded at border post The Beit Bridge border post recorded a sharp increase in the number of travellers who passed through during the festive season. According to statistics made available, more than 500 000 people passed through the port of entry between 14 December last year and 7 January this year. This is about 120 000 more than the same period the previous year.

Zimbabwe’s assistant regional immigration manager in charge of the border post, Mr Charles Gwede, said they handled 229 023 travellers on the exit side, an 11% increase compared to the previous festive season. On the arrivals side, 295 488 travel lers entered the country, a 35% surge compared to the previous festive season. Gwede said the highest number of travellers on

the entry side was recorded on 23 December, when 42 435 people entered the country from South Africa. On the departure side, the highest number was recorded on 3 January, when 22 625 people left the country. Gwede said most of the trav ellers that they handled were Zimbabweans working in South Africa who had visited home for the Christmas holiday.

Young Koﬁ plays for Titans U/19 Kofi Apea-Adu, head boy of Louis Trichardt High School and a keen cricketer, played for the Titans this year. “It was the highlight of my cricket ‘career’ so far. I have gained a lot of experience, especially from the four U/19 World Cup players who played on my side,” said Kofi on his return from the Titans week from 2 to 8 January. He played for the Titan Cubs, which is the Titans’ U/19 team. Kofi was the youngest player in the team. They competed, among others, against the Lions, Warriors, Cobras and Knights. Kofi is mainly a bowler and felt that the Titanexperience

improved his bowling. He batted at number seven for the Titans. Kofi was selected for the Titan Cubs after the provincial U/19 tourna ment hosted in Potchefstroom from 16 to 21 December last year. Lim popo, Mpumalanga and Easterns and Northerns from Pretoria competed. In 2011, Kofi was selected for the South African U/17 cricket team. “This year is a big year for cricket. Another set of provincial trials is coming up. Hopefully, I can play for the Titans again,” said Kofi, who dreams of playing cricket and study Kofi Apea-Adu, head boy of Louis Trichardt ing business management next year High School and a keen cricketer, played for the Titans from 2 to 8 January this year. when he has completed Grade 12.
