Mysterious fire attacks family A mysterious fire that erupts without warning has been terrorising the Ratshipanga family of Tshiozwi. The poor family has lost a number of their belongings in the sporadic fires and are now appealing to members of the community to assist.

The fire first broke out at the house of Mr Benjamin Ratshipanga last Monday (7th). According to his daughter, Rhinete, the fire started soon after she had chased away a dog that was carrying around a tin of snuff.

The mysterious fire erupted and her clothes caught fire. Fortunately it did not burn her skin. The following day the incident repeated itself, although this time it occurred when no one was inside the room. “I suddenly saw dark smoke coming from the other room.

When we went to that room, we found that the clothes, furniture and food were on fire,” says Benjamin.

Firefighters from the Makhado Municipality arrived on the scene on Tuesday morning and managed to put out the fire, but not long after they left, the fire erupted again. On Wednesday, the Makhado Municipality delivered food parcels and blankets to the family. Later that same day, the fire started again and destroyed some of the blankets. The unemployed Benjamin says he never thought something like this would happen in his house: “I am stunned, because people claim it can happen if you have debts or have a grudge against somebody.” According to him, he does not harbour grudges against anybody. He appealed to people to come and pray for the family, so that the fire can stop.

A religious leader, Alpheus Mudau of True Worshipper Christian Centre, appealed to the community to help the Ratshipanga family. Mudau called upon pastors to pray for the family who are having sleepless nights because of this fire. The Limpopo Traditional Health Practitioner’s General Secretary, Mbulaheni Neluvhola, said they would also investigate if there were any of their members who might be supplying people with the type of concoctions that could cause such fires.

Tshilwavhusiku SAPS spokesperson Const Godwin Mahuwa confirmed that a fire had erupted at the Ratshipanga family’s home. Mahuwa said they would send their experts to investigate.

Shocked family members cry uncontrollably while the body is being taken to a waiting hearse.

Beit Bridge woman dumps baby in toilet A 32-year-old Zimbabwean woman from Mberengwa village outside Beit Bridge, who allegedly felt she was too ill and was going to die soon, decided to throw her prematurely born baby into a Blair toilet five days after giving birth.

Tendai Dube, who appeared in court on Monday, facing a charge of infanticide, told the court in mitigation that she felt that no-one would be able to take care of her child after her death, hence the decision to

terminate the infant’s life. Dube also said she also could not bear the fact that she had given birth to a “pale child”. The case was postponed to 21 November for sentencing.

The court heard that on 22 September this year, Dube gave birth to a premature baby boy at the hospital in Masvingo. She was later transferred to a local hospital, where she was admitted for four days. She and her baby were later discharged. When she left the hospital, Dube went to a

local craft centre where she then wrapped the baby in a brown fleece cloth and threw it in a Blair toilet.

The court heard that a few days later local residents were later disturbed by a bad smell that was coming from the toilet and notified the police. The police later investigated and retrieved the body of the baby, which was now at an advanced state of decomposition. Further investigations led to the arrest of Dube.

Road carnage

Four lucky to be alive after crash on N1 “We had just left work after our night-shift session at about 05:00 on Saturday morning, when we saw this car coming at a very high speed on the N1 towards Musina town. It did not slow down at the traffic circle and the driver lost control and hit the fence of the Great

North Plaza. The car then hit a high mast lamp, destroying it completely. After that, it rolled several times before coming to a standstill next to the road.”

This is how a security officer, an eyewitness who refused to give his name, described the accident that left one person injured

over the weekend.

“After it rolled, three occupants got out of the car and ran away towards the railway line.

The fourth occupant, who was injured, was taken to Messina Hospital for treatment. These people were lucky to survive, because the car was travelling at a very high speed,” he added.

The security officer said when they approached the car, they saw liquor bottles inside. “Even the one who was taken to the hospital looked intoxicated. I suspect that these guys had partied all night.”

Well-known ANCYL activist Michael Mudau has become the 36th victim of the Nandoni Dam. Mudau (28), a former Raluswielo ANCYL branch chairman at Makwarela, drowned in the dam on Saturday.

The dam was constructed in 2007 and, because of the many drownings, communities are now complaining that there is no end in sight to the deaths as there is no proper control at the dam.

Many are now complaining that, instead of providing water to the local communities, the dam has become a death trap.

According to information gathered at the scene, it is alleged that Mudau and his friends were relaxing at the dam, when a female companion, who was swimming in the dam, experienced problems in the water. Mudau, who managed to rescue the woman, drowned in the dam.

Police divers retrieved Mudau’s body with the help om Vhembe municipal officials.The friends apparently frequented the place and used to go and relax at the same spot during weekends.

The death of Mudau, a staunch member of the United African Apostolic Church, has sent shockwaves through the surrounding communities and leaders who have been calling for strict measures at the dam. News of Mudau’s drowning spread like wildfire and, within a short space of time, the dam was swarming with people, while the distraught family members looked on.

As it was already late, police divers suspended the search, only to resume it in the morning.

Mudau’s body was allegedly found in the morning, floating close to the spot where he had

drowned.

The arrival of the hearse sparked tears from members of the family, who cried uncontrollably when the body was lifted into the vehicle.

During Mirror’s visit to the scene, community members, some as old as 70 years, went on with their business of doing their washing and some bathing in the dam, apparently not worried about the scene just next to them.

One of those washing exclaimed that they no longer feared death as many of their relatives had died in the dam and that they did not have water in the village.

In 2009, the Public Protector, Adv Lawrence Mushwana, made recommendations, among them the issue of safety at the dam. The recommendations have so far not been implemented.

Reacting at the scene, community leader and chairperson of the complaints resolution committee at the village Mr Solomon Baloyi said it was sad that another life had been lost before any safety measures could be put in place.

Baloyi said deaths would continue if nothing was done as a matter of urgency to curb them.

He said the local communities were vulnerable as they do not even have water to wash and drink as the taps go dry for months or, if water comes, it only does during the late hours of the night, when it is not safe to venture out. He said the whole dam is also swarming with deadly crocodiles, which are a danger to the communities.

“We are worried that, now that it is hot, more people are still going to be killed in this dam. We are also concerned about those who continue to venture into the water for fishing, as many of

them have drowned,’”he said.

Mudau’s distraught mother, Ms Magdalene Mudau, said she was at Itsani village in Tshisahulu attending a function when she heard about the incident. “I called my son at around 16:00, asking him to come and collect me, but he said he would come a bit later. When I called him for the second time around 17:00, the phone was answered by someone else, who told me something had happened to my son,“ she said.

She said she nearly fainted when she heardtold that he had drowned. “My son was everything to me and the family; losing him is like losing a part of me, “she said.

Family member Mr Bethuel Dagada, who was at the scene, described the death as a blow to the family. “We had all our eyes on him as a family. We looked up to him for assistance as he was a responsible man. His death has left us with a sore wound that will be difficult to heal,” he said.

Deal with laziness and success will follow Limpopo MEC for Agriculture Ms Dipuo Letsatsi Duba has urged farming stakeholders to deal with the human element of laziness if they are to produce enough food and cope with the ever-growing national population.

During the launch of the Molemolle Agricultural Forum, she said people had to deal with laziness and what followed would be success. The launch took place at Molemolle on Thursday last week. Government officials from the Capricorn and Molemolle agriculture departments, com-

mercial and emerging farmers attended the launch.

Letsatsi Duba said the world’s population was growing at a very fast rate and that South Africa had not escaped the wrath. She said in order to meet the demand of food by the country’s population, farmers needed to change their mindset and kick away the human element of laziness.

She said South Africa is blessed with all the expertise that any dry land can be turned into productive land and more food can be produced.

Sahara, Sahara and Namibia Deserts had managed to produce vegetables and fruits even for exporting under trying circumstances.

“We must learn that it is not the amount of water and the availability of land that will feed the nation, but ideas and innovation that will maximise the available resources for future generations,” she added.

She said economic freedom would never be realised in this country if people still had a dependency culture and did not stand up and work.

Cllr Selina Gundula (49) passes away The untimely death of a Makhado Municipal ward councillor has left many stunned and shocked. Cllr Selinah Gundula died last Tuesday after a short illness. Gundula (49) was a councillor for Ward 24 at the time of her death.

The list of people who visited her home at Gogobole village in the Sinthumule area last week to pay their respects, included the Deputy Speaker of the Limpopo Legislature, Ms Miriam Ramadwa, the executive mayor of Vhembe District Municipality, Cllr Florence Dzhombere and Makhado Mayor Cllr Mavhungu Luruli-Ramakhanya.

Ngundula was depicted by many as a charismatic, disciplined and dedicated leader. Gundula was an active member of the African National Congress. She had served as a secretary for the Muhovhi ANC branch since 1997.

Gundula was also a member of the regional executive commitee of the ANC and a regional executive committee member of the ANC Women’s League in Vhembe.

Gundula, who was a teacher by profession for many years, had just resigned to become a councillor. She had taught at Tshiungulela High School for many years.

Vhembe District Executive Mayor, Cllr Florence Dzhombere said Gundula’s death came as a shock to her. “She still had a lot to do, both for the community and the government,” she said, adding that it would be very difficult to replace her.

She narrated how difficult it was for Gundula to become a councillor. “We fought as women of this district that Gundula could become a councillor.

Her death to us is unbelievable. We lost a commitThe late Cllr Selina Gundula ted leader who dedicated all her life to serve the community,” said Dzhombere. Gundula had served as an ANC councillor for the Makhado Municipality for two consecutive terms.

Makhado Mayor Cllr Mavhungu LuruliRamakhanya, who worked very closely with the deceased, said that she felt it was too soon to lose a hard worker like Gundula. Luruli added that her death happened at a time when she still expected Gundula to assist with the building of municipal wards.

“She was such an experienced councillor and we expected her to assist in grooming the newly appointed councillors at the municipality,” she said.

She added: “Gundula was one of our councillors who understood how local government works. She had remarkable experience and people learned a lot from her. Her death is a loss to both the municipality and the ANC.” Luruli added that Gundula will always be remembered for her good work in the community and within the ANC. Gundula was not only a politician but also feared God. She was a member of the Zion Christian Church.

The incident has left residents shocked and traumatized. They said it was a horror that had never happened in the village before. Mavhunga had just returned from Johannesburg, where he worked as a security guard. W/O Lazarus Netshidzati of the police at Mphephu said that Mavhunga is suspected to have shot his girlfriend and run away. “The police tried looking for him, but could not find him.

His lifeless body was recovered next to his home with a bullet wound to the head. His licensed pistol was lying right next to him,” he said.

According to Netshidzati, Mahumela was shot three times: under her right breast, in her stomach and at her back. “Although the suspect released five rounds, only three hit Mahumela,” he added.

Netshidzati further confirmed that a case of murder was opened with the police, following Mahumela’s death. “We also opened an inquest docket, following Mavhungu’s death,” he added.

Mavhungu and Mahumela will be laid to rest at the Tshitunitshafhasi cemetery tomorrow (Saturday).

Vendors get keys to their new stalls When Thulamela Municipality moved hundreds of vendors earlier this year, saying it was preparing a better place for them, many dismissed the step as just a gimmick.

They said the government did not care about the people, except when it was time to vote. Their faith in the government has now been restored. This comes after the municipality has opened brand new market stalls.

The women who owned stalls at an empty space next to Eskom’s offices were removed when a massive developmental project kicked off last month.

After their stalls were destroyed, some did not have any place to trade, while others who were lucky gained trading space next to the municipal offices. The

municipality had promised that some would be moved to a better trading place in town.

More than fifty women danced in jubilation when the mayor of Thulamela, in partnership with officials from the department of economic development and tourism, handed them the keys to their new stalls. One of the stall owners, Ms Mavis Maselesele, said the new stall was a big relief for her. Maselesele (57) said she started trading in town in 1987, but suffered a setback when the stalls they were trading in were burnt down.

She said the new stalls camee as a relief, even though the rent is too high for them. “We have lost our customers as many do not know where to find us. We feel the R350 we have to pay is

too much as we have to pay for electricity and water, which is also expensive,” she said.

Mahosi urged stall owners to take care of the stalls, saying they should guard jealously against the vandalisation of the stalls.

Mr Ashley Rasebotsa from the Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism said the new stalls came as part of a commitment by government to empower the community, as a way of easing poverty and unemployment. “We are restoring the dignity of the people. We are going to roll out the same facilities to identified areas. We have put aside a budget especially for this,” he said.

Mirror covered the sad story of the disabled Dembe Tshivhenga of Dopeni for the first time on 30 May 2007. She was six years old at the time. After Mirror’s coverage, Dembe received several gifts from our readers, which included wheelchairs, clothes, toys and groceries.

The coverage was also a wake-up call to the Department of Health and Social Development, whose officials visited the family to offer professional medical help to the ill child.

Dembe’s mother, Mavis Tshivhenga, says her daughter suffered from fever early last week. “I thought it was just ordinary flu and I took her to the doctor, who gave her some medication. Her condition got worse after two days and she died at home while we were preparing to take her to the hospital.” Mavis says she Grieving mother... When she was three months old, her head started bulging. I took her to Siloam Hospital and she was later transferred to the Polokwane provincial hospital. Doctors said she was suffering from hydrocephalus and they said the fluids in her head needed to be drained.”

She said doctors inserted shunt pipes into her head to drain the fluids, but after the draining, her head did not return to a normal size.

“It became disfigured and onecould clearly see on the head where the pipes had been inserted. Since then, she lost the use of her limbs and she became frail. She could not even speak or do anything for herself.

She was bedridden until her last day on earth.” She finally thanked God for giving her a wonderful gift in Dembe. “Although she departed so soon, she lived life to the fullest and I will love her forever. God has done his will and ours is to accept.”

Dembe was buried on Saturday during a moving ceremony at Dopeni village in the Nzhelele area.

Representing Vhembe District Municipality and the Limpopo Disabled Entrepreneur Network, Cllr Rapson Rambuwani urged parents to follow the example of Dembe’s mother, who did not hide her disabled daughter. “We are saddened by this death because Dembe was part of our big family in the disabled world. We used to come and visit her and assisted in different ways. Baloyi briefly appeared before the Waterval Magistrate’s Court last Thursday and the case was postponed.

He remains in custody.

Arrangements begin to lengthen Venetia’s life span Mayor to attend COP 17 Preparations are underway for the multi-billion-rand changing of Venetia Mine’s current open-pit mine to an underground mining process. This can effectively extend the mining operations at South Africa’s largest producer of diamonds for a further 30 years.

Venetia mine north of the Soutpansberg opened on 14 August 1992 with an estimated mine life of 20 years. The Venetia cluster comprises 12 groups of one kimberlite bodies. The two largest pipes are currently being mined in a single open-pit operation which will probably cease between 2020 and 2023. As part of Venetia Mine’s long-term strategy, the mine intends to exploit resources deeper than the current open-pit horizons

by changing to an underground mining process. Mining could then be extended up until 2050.

De Beers Consolidated Mines Limited gave notice this month of an amendment to the existing environmental management programme (EMP) and the development of an environmental impact assessment (EIA) for the proposed underground mining operations.

Public meetings were previously held with interested and affected parties for the scoping phase of this project. The scoping report has been approved and a second round of public meetings will now be held for the EIA phase.

The draft EIA and EMP amendment reports will be out for public comment

from 24 November until 14 Desember at various points in Musina (library and the Nancefield community hall), Alldays municipal offices, Mapungubwe National Park, Venetia Mine and Pontdrif police station.

Mphagane Primary bids farewell to first Grade 7’s Situated at Magweni village in the Mashau area, Mphagane Primary bade farewell to its first Grade 7 pupils during a recent ceremony at the school premises.

The school started with its activities in 1976, but only used to provide for pupils up to Grade 5. Last year, it had its first Grade 6 class. During the event, several pupils received certificates for their

achievements. The principal, Mr Shumani Mudau, said that the establishment of the intermediate and senior phase at the school, was a great achievement for the whole community. “Pupils are no longer traveling long distances to other schools, now that we have been upgraded to cater for the intermediate and senior phase,” said Mudau.

He expressed his appreciation to the Department of Education and to the Vhuronga 2 circuit for their assistance.

Although the school’s buildings are dilapidated, the principal was happy that the school now caters for all primary grades. Mudau, as well as the chairperson of the school governing body and the headman, was awarded with lifetime achievement awards for the development at the school.

Mayor Carol Phiri planted a tree at the municipal park in Musina last week as a sign of welcoming the COP 17 conference that will be held in Durban from 28 November to 9 December.

She also talked about the many benefits of trees. “In addition to manufacturing oxygen, trees add beauty to our landscape, give shade from the sun, many bear fruit we can eat, and provide lumber to build shelter. If everyone on earth could find the time to plant one or two trees per year, think of the profound effect this would have on our environment.”

Nicolus Ramuedzisi (39) of Muraleni died in an accident at Madodonga village two weeks ago.

He was travelling with two friends when the accident occurred and the vehicle overturned. The two friends were taken to the Louis Trichardt Memorial hospital with slight injuries. They were discharged the following day. Nicolus was buried the past weekend at Muraleni.

Environmental groups argued that DDT is a persistent organic pollutant, which can last between 2 to 15years in the soil, with a harming effect to the organisms living in it.

When asked why African countries continued using the substance, despite the consequences, Motsoaledi said, “We’ve agreed as leaders in the whole of Africa not only in SADC, but at an AU meeting in Namibia,

that we have to continue using DDT. If we stop using it, many people may die.”

“The controversial arguments of what the DDT can do to the environment have been there since the 1960s, at the time when the DDT was first used. Most of the environmental groups that are arguing like that are from western countries,” Motsoaledi added He went on and said that the West, Europe and America used DDT to eliminate malaria in their countries.

“They no longer have the outbreak because of the DDT substance. Now

they’re telling us that we cannot use the same substance, because it’s supposed to be having some environmental defects in future, as they now call it. But for the past six years, nobody has been able to show us what is wrong with DDT,” said Motswaledi.

“I can show you million graves of malaria, but nobody has shown me a single grave caused by DDT. Those are the facts. We’ve debated this issue even within the world organisation and they have allowed us to use it. Therefore, we’re not going against any law,” he continued.

Mr Norman Siema’s lifeless body was discovered by residents who were collecting firewood in the nearby bushes at Tshitunitshafhasi village last Sunday.

Siema, who was mentally challenged, had been living in the bushes for a very long time. Although his family tried to take him home, he often went back to the bushes.

The cause of his death is still unknown.

Confirming the incident, W/O Lazarus Netshidzate of the Mphephu SAPS said the police had opened an inquest docket, following the discovery.

“We were alerted by members of the community, who had discovered Siema in the bushes. When members of our police team arrived at the scene, his body was lying dead between the rocks next to the Nzhelele River,” he added.

He said that Siema had no visible wounds on his body. The result of a post mortem was not yet available at the time of going to press.

Netshidzati urged members of the community to look after mentally challenged people in the area. “Mentally challenged people must always be in the care of their relatives,” he appealed to the community.

A 23-year-old woman is accusing the pastor of the Mpheni Charis church of owing her money.

Ms Thina Mufamadi, who used to work for pastor Ernos Maluta Ranenyeni at a container where she sold electricity, contacted Mirror last week for assistance. She is accusing the pastor of firing her after allegedly failing to pay her while she was still working for him.

Mufamadi, who is now jobless, said that Ranenyeni had promised to pay her R1200 when he hired her in June this year. “He only gave me R700 for the six months I worked for him,” she said. She said that the pastor had simply reduced her salary for no apparent reason. Mufamadi added that when she asked the pastor about the rest of the money, he started accusing me of stealing money from him. “Then he fired me. All I wanted is the money I worked for.”

Mufamadi, who is also a member of the church, went on to say that the problem started when the pastor started visiting her at home at night. She added that she became concerned about the pastor’s night visits. “He only paid me R1 000 for one month and told me that R200 was for the church,” said Mufamadi.

Ranenyeni, however, admitted that he had indeed visited Mufamadi at home, just as he visits all his church members. “I did not know that she would have problems. I visit all my church members all the time. I employed her because I felt her plight, as she was not working. What I did not know was that I was putting myself in trouble (because) of her lies,” said pastor Ranenyeni.

He added that he paid her R700 per month as it was according to their agreement when she was employed.

He insisted that he wouldn’t give her the money she said he owed her because her allegations were not true. “I’d rather go to court to prove that I do not owe her. I’d rather pay my lawyer than give her the money I do not owe her,” Ranenyeni said.

Can Takalani Khomola rescue Makhado FM? The community radio station, Makhado FM, has appointed a new marketing manager.

Takalani Khomola is the man who believes that he can rescue the radio station from its current debt-ridden situation.

Currently, the radio station owes its creditors more than R700 000.

Khomola says he is up to the challenges and he believes that his 14 years’ experience in radio will help him come up with the answers to Makhado FM’s problems. Khomola worked for Bushbuckrige FM for many years before coming to Makhado. He has already had to make some tough decisions and on Monday, only days after officially starting work at the station, he had to fire two presenters for not being serious about their job.

Apart from the money which the radio station owes the landlord, the station apparently also owes the Makhado Municipality a lot of money on the outstanding electricity and services bill. The radio station currently operates with two members of the management, which is the station manager, Moses Muneri and his brother, Mulalo “Jomo” Gededzha, who fills in as the programme manager.

Khomola is realistic about the problems that Makhado FM is faced with, but still believes that things can change.

He says that his joining the station came after Moses Muneri had called him to come and assist him in re-shaping the radio station. “I have been working for the station for only two weeks, but already there are a lot of things that need to be changed,”

says Khomola. The station did not have a proper management team, as it is only Moses Muneri and his younger brother, Mulalo, he explains.

“I have started engaging stakeholders to come and rescue the radio station (from its financial woes). I know that people have lost trust and hope in the radio, but believe things can be changed. Out of 40 people I invited for our first stakeholder meeting, only five businesspeople showed up. This clearly indicates that they have lost trust in thestation,” stresses Khomola.

“I am busy trying to raise money from the business community, to rescue the station. We are also planning to have a music concert to raise money. I urge people to come and advertise, since the station has new management. I encourage people with experience in radio to bring their CVs to me at the radio station. We need people who are serious for the job,” he says. According to him, Makhado FM belongs to the community and not to the management.

The case between the radio station and the landlord proceeded in the High Hourt on Thursday.

This follows after the sheriff of the court had attached all the equipment at the station. The outcome of the court proceedings were not yet available at the time of going to press.

Hope for the unemployed in Vhembe district Thousands of unemployed youths in Vhembe might soon gain meaningful employment.

This follows the recent visit by the National Youth Development Agency, where thousands of youths submitted their curriculum vitae. This was during the organisation’s campaign, termed the Graduate Road Show.

More than 1 500 CVs from unemployed youths were collected during a function that was held at the Thohoyandou Town Hall. The CVs are to be taken to potential employers, mainly government departments and other state organs.

Job seekers were seen queeing in the scorching heat, waiting for

a chance to submit their qualifications.

The organization’s provincial secretary, Vusi Ntuli, said the campaign had kicked off last year in Polokwane, where 5 000 CVs were collected. He said the campaign was meant to counter what Cosau’s Zwelinzima Vavi termed the “unemployment time bomb”.

“We have many unemployed young people roaming the streets and this could become a real time bomb. We do not want to see a situation like Greece and the United Kingdom, where youths took to the streets because of unemployment,” he added.

Ntuli said over and above the

4 000 people that were employed in Polokwane, close to 100 more had been employed this year as part of the campaign. He added that they were not just raising the hopes of the unemployed, but they would try their best to assist young people to gain meaningful employment.

He said they would also be seeking job opportunities for those who had graduated from tertiary institutions and technical colleges. Ntuli said the organization was worried that even though Limpopo had many mines, many people were still not employed while the mines absorbed people from as far as Gauteng, thereby ignoring the local people.

Hundreds of guests, including parents, community leaders and community members, gathered at

the Tshilamba Town Hall in Mutale last Friday. Stakeholders and pupils who contributed to the successes of the schools were awarded certificates.

A cow ,donated by local businessman, Kenneth Mufeba of Vhafeba Funeral Scheme, was slaughtered for the guests.

Mr Thanyani Makhuvha, principal of the school, said the day had become a very important day on the school’s calendar. “This is the day that we used to celebrate some years ago, but we stopped due to circumstances beyond our control.

We meet all stakeholders and we look back at the year that was, our achievements, shortfalls and we also look at the year that is coming,” he said.

He said the occasion gavethem an opportunity to say thank you to stakeholders who had contributed to the successes of the school and added that several developments had taken place at the school in the past years. “This is a school based on religious principles. We know we cannot succeed alone and this is the reason we involve the parents and others in the running of the school,” he added. Major facelift for Shayandima township’s oldest crèche The dilapidated Shayandima Crèche, outside Thohoyandou, the township’s oldest crèche, will never be the same.

This follows a visit to the crèche by Limpopo’s MEC for Public Works, Ms Thabitha Mohlala, last Wednesday.

Mohlala, who arrived with a contingent from Public Works, led by the Head of Department, Mr Christopher Tshamano, Vhembe Mayor Florence Dzhombere and Thulamela Mayor Grace Mahosi, spent much of Wednesday assisting at the crèche.

After an inspection, they painted the dilapidated crèche. She handed over some pots, cutlery, plates and other kitchen utensils to the crèche. After spending much of the day at the crèche, Mohlala left a message of hope to the management of the crèche. When she left, most of the building had been painted.

This is part of the Expanded Public Works Programme Wednesday, where they as a department visit identified projects in the province.

Before visiting the crèche, Mohlala handed over title deeds to three municipalities in Vhembe. The handing-over ceremony was held at the Vhembe Municipality’s auditorium.

Mahatlani Primary school ends second in the Nestlé Community Nutrition Awards The Mahatlani Primary school from Hlanganani was applauded by many for ending second in the 2011 Nestlé Community Nutrition Awards.

The winners of the competition were announced during a ceremony held at Emperor’s Palace in Johannesburg last Wednesday.

Nestlé South Africa has been running the awards for the past 17 years.

Two Mbhizas sing to inspire everyone Tinyiko Mbhiza (25) and Robert Mbhiza (25) are two young musicians who sing under the stage name Mdun’wazi S Mbhiza & Shikwamula. Their love for music developed when they played instruments for other artists and did backing vocals way back in the 1990s. Their latest offering is an11-track album entitled Munghana Lonene, which literally means “A True Friend’.

“We said our new album is Munghana Lonene because each one of us needs a true friend,” says Tinyiko. “We’ve also received good responses from those who listened to the songs.”

Mdun’wazi S Mbhiza & Shikwamula recorded their two albums with JTK Entertainment, a music distribution and promotion company based in the Vhembe area.

According to reports from JTK Entertainment, the album is doing well in the market.

“This guy is my uncle,” says a smiling Robert pointing at Tinyiko. “It’s trying working with your uncle. Like with any other musicians, tension develops when one of us loses tune or rhythm with his guitar, and we quarrel.”

They say they strive to produce music of high quality with a wide range of themes. They sing to inspire, teach, heal and encourage the people through day-to-day struggles. In their songs, they also encourage learners to refrain from disrespect, alcohol and crime.

“We grew up listening to Thomas Chauke and Elias Baloyi,” Tinyiko cites two Xitsonga traditional music greats. “Their music appeals to all, young and old. So we also get inspiration from them.”Tinyiko and Robert have taken into the music profession like a farmer who thinks about and minds his fields and livestock day and night.

“I played bass guitar on Edward Mabasa’s eight albums and his other projects for a fee,” tells Tinyiko. “Now I play lead guitar, while Robert plays bass.”

“We view our presence in the music industry as a sign that Xitsonga music will never die out,” adds Robert.

With the festive season around the corner, Mdun’wazi S Mbhiza & Shikwamula advise patrons of shebeens and taverns never to drink away from home until the late hours of night and walk the long distance back home drunk. They say it is not safe to do so, because some people always take advantage of other people.

The Hlanganani-based school, Mahatlani, established a vegetable garden at the back of their classrooms. They then entered for the competition where they competed against other schools across the country.

The school was awarded a cheque of R10 000 and a certificate. The Tzaneen-based Sikhathi Primary scooped up first position and received R15 000.

According to the deputy principal of Mahatlani, Mr Michael Ngwenya, when they started the vegetable garden at the school in February this year, “our aim was to alleviate poverty in the community and, at the same time, promote farming by encouraging pupils to consider farming as a career.”

Ngwenya said that the programme promoted the spirit of entrepreneurship as pupils were also taught to sell vegetables to the community. “The garden is also included in the curriculum and pupils are taught in the garden. Grade 2 to 7 pupils do the garden themselves, under the supervision of teachers,” he added.

Trees are life, crèche pupils are told Children of the Leonard Mmbudziseni Crèche at Tshandama in Mutale planted several trees at their crèche on Friday.

The trees were donated by the Department of Agriculture and Economic Development.

The local traditional leaders of the area, VhoKhotsimunene Tshilume Netshandama and Fhatuwani Pundulu of Tshandama and Lukau villages, took part in the planting ceremony.

“Trees are life,” said Ms Muofhe Mushiana, an official from the economic development, environment and tourism department in Vhembe. She taught the pupils the different types of trees, as well as their value to life.

“It will benefit our children who thought plants were manufactured in factories. They have seen the trees being planted today,“ she said. She added that the trees would provide shade for the children and said that the department had a number of trees which were to be planted throughout Vhembe.

Principal Takalani Hazel Malivha said they were very grateful for what the department had done for them.

Rospa United and Winners Park share the spoils Rospa United shared the glory with Winners Park following their 1-1 draw in their Vodacom Promotional League match at the packed Tshifulanani Stadium on Sunday.

Winners Park enjoyed ball possession in the first 15 minutes of the game.

At that stage, the home side was running for cover. United gained

momentum as the game progressed.

It was in the 11th minute when Winners Park threatened to score for the first time. Their left-footed frontrunner, Godfrey Bapela, could not believe his eyes when his close-range shot missed the target by inches.

The struggle continued, with Winners Park dictating terms in the middle of the park. Realizing that

the odds were against them, United solidified their midfield by introducing Thinandavha Mandiba for Sbusiso Shabangu in the 24th minute. The visitors from Mokopane broke the deadlock in the 28th minute. Kholofelo Monama unleashed a powerful shot, following a beautiful pass from Mzwakhe Mtimkulu. United lost shape in the middle soon after the goal for Winners Park. They nearly conceded another goal because of that. David Shibiri of Winners Park hesitated for far too long to unleash, until he lost possession within the box.

The local lads fought back in the 38th minute.

Mashudu Mashapha beat the keeper with a half volley after a neat pass from Nndateni Sebola.

The last half saw United replace Happy Mahuntsi and Rolivhuwa Mukwevho with Skhumbuzo Shabangu and Hloniphani Maluleke respectively.

The referee, Ms Lufuno Nemagovhani, warned Tsepo Molala of Winners Park with a card for faking an injury later in the game.

New sponsor for Black Leopards The well-known Italian sportswear brand, Kappa, has sealed a three-year sponsorship deal with the Limpopo-based Premier League team, Black Leopards. The official launching took place at the Meropa Casino outside Polokwane on Friday evening.

According to the sponsorship deal, Kappa will sponsor the team with sports wear, training and travelling kit, as well as leisure wear.

According to the CEO of Kappa, Mr Michael Joseph, his company realised that Black

Leopards, who is struggling to uplift the standard of football in the country as well as create jobs through sport, needed financial and resource assistance. He expressed the hope that, through the partnership, the team’s performance would improve drastically in league matches.

He stated that it was a smart move for Kappa to sponsor Leopards and said that the sponsorship would boost the morale of the players in the Lidoda Duvha family. The chairperson of Leopards, Mr David Thidiela, said that the new partnership would enhance

the profile of his team. Its quest to secure a financial sponsor was giving it a competitive edge, not only on the field on play, but also in boosting its corporate image.

Thidiela added that Leopards were glad to be associated “with a visionary company that is preparing to grow with a team operating in the underprivileged communities”.

He promised the club’s supporters that the team would play high-quality football from now.

“We will avoid the relegation ghost, who is knocking on our door,” he added.

Battle of the Stars The much-awaited Vodacom Promotional League match between Phungo All Stars and Nobela All Stars will be staged at the Tshifulanani Stadium tomorrow afternoon.

The fact that the match is a derby for the Vhembe-based sides is reason enough for soccer fanatics to expect a thriller.

Nobela All Stars are in tight contention for the league championship and a victory for them will keep their title hopes alive.

The newcomers in the Vodacom Promotional League, FC Basel, will host Mighty FC at the Malamulele Stadium. Basel were battling to collect points both home and away in their first five matches. A home defeat will push Basel deeper into the relegation quagmire, as they are now fighting for survival at the bottom of the log.

Rospa United will be away to collect points against Magezi FC. The match will be played at the Seshego Stadium. United disappointed their home fans last weekend, when they drew 1-1 with Winners Park at the Tshifulanani Stadium.

Giyani Hotspurs will meet Blue Rocks at home, while Lephalale Young Killers will enjoy the home-ground advantage in their match against Baroka FC. The newly promoted Dinare FC will host Modimolle Aces. Winners Park will be the host in their match against The Dolphins. Fanang Diatla and the Super Eagles will meet at the Le­ bowakgomo Stadium.

RO United through to Top 8 stage Tshakhuma RO United proceeded to the Top 8 stage of the Safa Vhembe Total Cup, after beating the highly rated Rockers FC 7-6 by penalty shoot-out at the Louis Trichardt Show Grounds on Saturday.

The winner was determined through penalty shoot-out, after the teams played to a goalles draw at full time.

The game was equally contested, although Rockers had the upper hand in the first half.

The players of Rockers played roughly from the onset. They did not get far with their wrongdoings as the referee, Mashudu Sathuma, flashed three yellow cards in quick succession.

The first player to go into the referee’s book was Hulisani Thanyani, who tackled Ipfi Muthubi from behind in the 14th minute. Ofhani Mudau was also booked four minutes later. He obstructed Lufuno Mugodi in the danger zone and for that reason he was lucky to escape with yellow.

Freedom Birds out of Total Challenge KO Last Saturday marked the end of the road for Mulodi Freedom Birds in the Total Challenge KO Competition.

They were unceremoniously booted out of the competition by Mianzwi Green Hornet, who beat them 6-3 in their last-18 match at Tshifulanani Stadium.

Green Hornet deserved to win from the onset. They did not waste time and their fast forward, Mulanga Matsheketsheke, found the net in the seventh minute. He received a pre-cooked pass from Lesley Sioga and blasted in a rocket.

Freedom Birds retaliated via a substitute, Vhutshilo Nemulodi, in the 54th minute. Latani Mudau of Green Hornet went into the referee’s book, following a late tackle on Saul Nyadzani soon afterwards. Freedom Birds took the lead, after Mukona Makhado blasted in an excellent goal from outside the box.

The unusual happened in the 68th minute. Latani Mudau of Green Hornet tackled Michael Tshikalange of Freedom Birds the rough way. Instead of giving him his marching orders, as that was a second

bookable offence, the referee, Mr Roy Mulaudzi, flashed a second yellow, much to the amazement of the soccer fanatics.

A defender of Birds handled the ball within the box and it was a clear penalty for Green Hornet. Meshack Ramatamba made no mistake from the white spot.

As the score was 2-2 at the end of the regulated time, the winner was determined through a penalty shoot-out. Green Hornet converted four of their chances, while Freedom Birds managed to score in only one of their five chances.

Leopards must get points If the words of Black Leopards’ head coach, Mr Vladislav Heric, are anything to go by, Black Leopards will come back with a full compliment of points from their match against Amazulu on Sunday.

They will meet in an Absa Premiership League match at the Moses Mabida Stadium in Durban.

Heric said that the time had come for Black Leopards to start collecting league points, saying Amazulu were unfortunate because they were going to meet at a time when it was important for them to gain points. He revealed that he will give a number of irregular players a chance to prove themselves on Sunday.

Heric appealed to the team’s fans not to press the panic button, saying things would soon change for the better in their camp. Lidoda Duvha managed to win only one of the 10 league

matches they had played to date.

The match will start at 15:00 and will be screened live on television.

Mamelodi Sundowns will host Maritzburg United at the Loftus Stadium in Pretoria on the same day and time.

Four matches will be played tomorrow afternoon.

Jomo Cosmos will host Lamontville Golden Arrows; Free State Stars will meet Platinum Stars; Bidvest Wits and Orlando Pirates will test each other’s strength at the Mbombela Stadium and Kaizer Chiefs will entertain Santos at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.

Two matches will be played this evening. Moroka Swallows will host Bloemfontein Celtic at the Volkswagen Dobsonville Stadium, while Ajax Cape Town will host Supersport United at the Cape Town Stadium.

Black Leopards have signed the former Or­lan­ do Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Benedict “Tso” Vilakazi. According to the new public relations officer of Black Leopards, Tendani Thidiela, Vilakazi signed a one-year contract with the team. He added that Vilakazi will be available on Sunday when Leopards travel to Durban to face Amazulu.
