Tshikota residents take to the street over dry taps By Kaizer Nengovhela Residents of Tshikota township took to the streets on Tuesday and Wednesday, demand ing a constant flow of water. They barricaded the main road that passes by the village with stones, burning tyres and tree branches. No schooling took place in the township. On Wednesday, the police used rubber bullets and teargas to disperse the angry residents, who wanted to march to the Makhado Municipality. A resident of Tshikota, Ms Rose Mathekgane, said they had decided as a community to close all roads leading to the township and the R523

She said the fact that the municipality was not able to give services to the community was not surprising, “as what they know best is corruption”. She explained that the community had decid-

ed to embark on a protest march after realising that the challenges they faced were not being addressed by the municipality. “False promises were made to us, without implementation of the promised projects or services,” she said. On Tuesday, different stakeholders, community members and Makhado Municipality executive committee members, led by the mayor, Cllr Samuel Munyai, met to resolve the problem. The residents raised their concerns and he promised to send their grievances to the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM). He also promised that the Makhado Municipality would sit down and tackle their concerns with the VDM. He said that the residents would get a response after they had met with the district officials and he invited the district officials responsible for water to come and address the residents. VDM’s spokesperson, Matodzi Ralushai, said the municipality was aware of the problem. “It is

just a misunderstanding between residents and their leaders that led to the protest,” he said and added that they were trying to repair the pipes, but their technicians could not go into a hostile area. “It is just a few lines that are not working, and we are trying to solve them,” said Ralushai. He further said that the other problems that were denying the community water were theft and vandalization of water pumps. He promised that they were going to address the community. The problem will be solved when the Kutama-Sinthumule bulk-water supply project and pump station are finished. * Shortly before going to press, the Zoutpansberger was informed that 12 persons, six women and six men were arrested during the unrest. They will soon face public violence charges in the local magistrate’s court. Six police officials were also injured in the clashes with the residents.

Die Hangklip Posduifklub beoog om hul jaarlikse jongduifveiling vir die 2020 seisoen te hou op Saterdag, 26 Oktober, by hul klubhuis te 62 Mimosastraat in Louis Trichardt. Die Hervormde Kerk Louis Trichardtgemeente nooi almal hartlik uit om die naweek van 1 en 2 Novem ber saam te kom basaar hou in hulle “nuwe” kerksaal. Die tema vanjaar van hulle basaar is Die lewe is ‘n lied – Somerbasaar Kaperjolle. “Bring die kleingoed vir lekker kasteel-spring, terwyl mamma en pappa die trop wit olifante besigtig. Ja, pappa, die vars vleis gaan teen sakpas pryse. En, mamma, jou oog gaan vir seker die groot verskeidenheid fyngebak vang… die koppie tee staan ook gereed!” het die gemeente gesê. Die basaarpoeding hou groot belofte in en by die pannekoektafel sal geen mens verby kan hou nie. Vir stamina is daar ook hoenderburgers, kerrie-en-rys, vetkoek-en-maalvleis-vetkoek en natuurlik jaffels. Die basaar duur vanaf 12:00 tot 18:00 op 1 November en vanaf 08:00 tot 13:00 op 2 November. “Moenie hierdie geleentheid misloop nie,” het die gemeente gesê.

Trichardt SPCA will be hosting their next farmer’s market at their kennels along the Vondeling road on 2 November. “Come one, come all!” invites the SPCA. The market will take place from 09:00 until 12:00. No shortage of fun and laughter was experienced during the Louis Trichardt SPCA’s annual auction, which took place at Northgate Lodge on Friday, 11 October. “We had our fifth annual auction and it truly was a night to be remembered, one of our best to date!” said Alicia Thomas of the local SPCA. By Monday, she said, initial indications were that they had managed to raise about R80 000. Among the “goods” auctioned off by auctioneer Phillip Potgieter was a week-long family vacation for eight people to Mozambique, a twonight breakaway for four people to Pezulu Tree House Lodge in Hoedspruit, hampers and much more. Apart from the good food and company, guests were also well entertainment by well-known blind South-African singer Vernon Barnard. The Louis Trichardt SPCA thanked all who supported the event. Local Rotarians to help raise polio awareness Charity

Members of the Louis Trichardt Rotary Club will join the thousands of Rotarians worldwide on World Polio Day on 24 October to raise awareness about polio. Photo supplied.

On 24 October, Rotary Club Louis Trichardt will join Rotarians all over the world to raise awareness about their efforts to eradicate polio for good as part of World Polio Day. Polio is a paralyzing and potentially fatal disease that still threatens children in some parts of the world. The polio virus invades the nervous system and can cause total paralysis in a matter of hours. Polio is an infectious disease that can strike at any age but mainly affects children under five, is very contagious and is spread by swallowing contaminated food or water, or by direct contact with an infected person. Polio is incurable but completely vaccine preventable. Since 24 October 1985, Rotary worldwide has embarked on a mission to stop the spread of polio in the world. At that time more than 350 000 cases of polio were present in 125 countries, which saw about 1,000 new cases per day at one stage. The name given to the Rotary project was “PolioPlus”but has since been renamed to “End Polio Now”. To date, and by the time the world is certified polio-free, Rotary’s effort will exceed $2,2 billion (US) to end the disease. This does not include the countless volunteer hours since launching its polio-immunization programme in 1985. Rotary has also committed to raise $50 million (US) a year, to be matched 2 to 1 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, yielding another $450 million for polio-eradication activities over the next three-year period. Rotary’s efforts also played a huge role in decisions made by donor

Rotary volunteers have spent many, many hours over years to immunize more than 2,5 billion children in 122 countries, which has eventually decreased the global incidence of polio by a massive 99.9%. They have connected more than 1,2 million members from more than 35 000 rotary clubs in almost every country in the world who worked for the global polio-eradication initiative. Rotary is in a public-private partnership with the World Health Organization, the U.S. Centre for Disease Control, UNICEF, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation as well as governments of the world. Today, only three countries in the world exist where the transmission of the polio virus has not been stopped, namely Afghanistan and Pakistan, and only last month, Indonesia, with 1 case. The total polio cases worldwide at the end of 2016 was 37, which dropped to only 14 at this stage. Nigeria, one of the last four polio-case countries, has been clean for three years. As long as a single child has polio, all children are at risk, and Rotary will support eradication efforts where polio remains endemic, as well as efforts to keep 12 vulnerable, but clean, African countries polio free. The Louis Trichardt Rotary club has been committed to the eradication-of-polio initiative since 1986 and contributed substantial funding via a number of fundraising efforts where club members and members of the public contributed time and funds for this deserving world initiative.

Due to this intention individual interruption of the electricity supply will take place as and when the meters will be replaced. As the project has already been commenced with the actual work on site will be commenced with from November 2019 and continue to June 2020 and beyond from the old town at the West proceeding to the new town in the East. Customers current deposit will remain but the basic charge will fall away. The tariff shall still be on incline block for residential and business tariffs as the case may be. Each affected customer will have to be re-registered on the financial system as a pre-paid customer. The main aim of this project is to enhance the Municipality’s revenue and avoid unnecessary billing and energy losses challenges. No guarantee can be given that the electricity supply will be interrupted during the entire specified time. The electricity supply to certain parts of the electricity network may be restored earlier or later than the specified time. All consumers are therefore warned that the Council’s electrical lines must be considered live during the entire project period. (Contd from P16) To add even more perspective, one needs to look at the averages. The Louis Trichardt Parkrun’s average time is 42:07. One must assume Kipchoge can up the pace slightly if he knows that the race is a shorter one, so he probably would complete the course three times before the average runner finished. Even when we compare South Africa’s best runners of all time against Kipchoge, the Kenyan runner’s performance is still remarkable. Gert Thys holds the record as the fastest

South African in the marathon. In 1999 he finished the Tokyo marathon in 2:06:33. The almost seven minutes that Kipchoge cut off Thys’s time may not sound like much, but it is massive. Kipchoge’s time is even impressive when comparing it to the times SA runners achieved in half-marathons. In August this year, Stephen Mokoka broke the one-hour barrier, finishing the Buenos Aires Half-Marathon in Argentina in 59:51. (The record still needs to be officially recognised). Kipchoge, in theory, would have beaten him by

a second and then completed another half-marathon, again beating his time by a second. Athletes who believe they can be the Kipchoges of the future should consider starting with their training at the Parkruns every Saturday morning. No entry fee is charged and the event is organised by volunteers. It also makes provision for the walkers who take more than an hour to finish the 5km (who would have been lapped by Kipchoge at least four times). Be there at 07:00 in the summer.
