Muledane on Saturday afternoon.

The deceased siblings were identified as Ntakadzeni (10) and Advhaho Masithi (8). They were killed while on their way to visit their grandmother, who stays in another section of Muledane. Both were learners in Jim Tshivhonelo Primary School in Muledane.

The father of the children, Mr Awelani Masithi, said that he was still devastated about the incident, because the children were happy that day.

As a parent he could not imagine that later that day he would receive the tragic news.

He said the children had told him that they wanted to visit their grandmother and he had not suspected that something bad would happen.

He said that he nearly fainted when he was informed that his two children had suddenly fallen from the bridge and plunged into the water-filled ditch below.

The traditional leader of Muledane village, Chief Mavhina Mawahsane, expressed his worry that his community had lost young children from whom they were expecting a good future. According to him, the family and communities

were devastated, and the incident was the worst in the area in many years.

Limpopo police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo said that they had opened an inquest docket, following the incident.

He added that, according to the information they had received, four siblings had been walking from one section of the Muledane village to another, when the eightyear-old girl had suddenly fallen from the bridge and plunged into the ditch below. “Her 10-year-old brother then jumped into the ditch, apparently trying to rescue his sister, but they both perished.

The other two siblings then ran home and raised the alarm,” Mojapelo, said.

According to him, the circumstances that led to the tragedy were still sketchy at the time of our going to press, but what was not clear was whether the deceased had drowned or died as a result of the fall.

Cause of death will be determined by further police investigations. He said the wooden makeshift bridge had been made for pedestrians as the streets in the area were being tarred.

Their funeral service is scheduled to be held on Saturday at the Muledane cemetery and will start at 06:30.

Chaos erupts in Tshikota over VDM’s water failures

By Kaizer Nengovhela Residents of Tshikota township took to the streets on Tuesday and Wednesday, demanding a constant flow of water.

They barricaded the main road that passes by the village with stones, burning tyres and tree branches. No schooling took place in the township. On Wednesday, the police used rubber bullets and teargas to disperse the angry residents, who wanted to march to the Makhado Municipality.

A resident of Tshikota, Ms Rose Mathekgane, said they had decided as a community to close all roads leading to the township and the R523 road to Vivo “while seeking an ear from the municipality. We are tired. We have decided to give them a hard time by peacefully closing the main road from Vivo to Louis Trichardt. Maybe they will listen to us, and if they do not, we will stay here until we get water to drink, cook and bath”.

Mathekgane said because the municipality had failed to deliver services such water, the collection of refuse and road maintenance, the municipality was to scrap all large water debts because they were not using water, so that there would be no community member who paid for unrendered services. “Everybody is aware of the fact that our communities have not had a constant supply of water for far too long,” she said. “ She explained that crime was also rife in the night as a result of the lack of lights. “We demand that high mast lights be erected around our ward in order to reduce crime,” she said.

She said the fact that the municipality was not able to give services to the community was not surprising, “as what they know best is corruption”. She explained that the community had decided to embark on a protest march after realising that the challenges they faced were not being addressed by the municipality. “False promises were made to us, without implementation of the promised projects or services,” she said.

On Tuesday, different stakeholders, community members and Makhado Municipality executive committee members, led by the mayor, Cllr Samuel Munyai, met to resolve the problem. The residents raised their concerns and he promised to send their grievances to the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM). He also promised that the Makhado Municipality would sit down and tackle their concerns with the VDM. He said that the residents would get a response after they had met with the district officials and he invited the district officials responsible for water to come and address the residents.

VDM’s spokesperson, Matodzi Ralushai, said the municipality was aware of the problem. “It is just a misunderstanding between residents and their leaders that led to the protest,” he said and added that they were trying to repair the pipes, but their technicians could not go into a hostile area. “It is just a few lines that are not working, and we are trying to solve them,” said Ralushai.

He further said that the other problems that were denying the community water were theft and vandalization of water pumps. He promised that they were going to address the community.

The problem will be solved when the Kutama-Sinthumule bulk-water supply project and pump station are finished.

South African Youth Against Crime (SAYAC) members are ready to assist during the festive season.

SAYAC promise safe festive season

By Maanda Bele While communities use the festive season for fun and relaxation, to some people it brings some opportunities to perform criminal activities.

This year, members of the South African Youth Against Crime (SAYAC) have promised a safe and crime-free festive season.

SAYAC is a non-profit organisation that was established in 2016 and deals mostly with crime prevention, public safety

and skills development. The chairperson of the organisation, Mr Richard Ramabulana, said that people hardly enjoyed the festive season because of gangs who were always ready to rob people of their hard-earned belongings and spoil the festive mood. “I recall one incident about a year ago where people were forced to get out of the resorts because a gang was misbehaving.”

He said that their aim this year would be to let people feel safe and that they had already started with marshalling where

events such as the famous Kids and Mascots show at Mphephu Resort took place to ensure that the people were safe.

SAYAC was recently funded to the tune of R15 000 by Matasis Investment Company to make sure that they are on guard this festive season.

Musina FM accused of not complying with licence rules

The Musina-based community radio station, Musina FM, has been fraught with problems of maladministration, mismanagement and the misuse of funds for years now, but those who purport to be the “management” deny that any “problems” exist at the radio station.

In August, matters came to a head when the station manager dismissed five staff members who had requested a meeting to address some of pressing issues to ensure that the station was run in compliance with ICASA’s regulations and served the community the right way.

MDDA’s spokesperson, Ms Cheryl Langbridge, stated that the agency had paid out two tranches of the funding to Musina FM, but added that they could not pay out the third one because the station had misused the second tranche.

Tshikuyu village in Ward 12 of Musina Municipality is more than 120km from the main municipal offices in Musina. When community members want service-delivery assistance, they must travel the long distance to access the municipal offices.

Things were totally different in the village last Tuesday when the leadership of Musina Municipality came to discuss service-delivery problems. The delegation from the municipality was led by the Speaker, Cllr Gilbert Netshisaulu, and a member of the executive committee, Cllr Jeremia Khunwana. The meeting took place at Headman Hyson Nngigideni Tshiwandalani’s residence.

On 28 September 2016, Ramaano went to court again in trying to set aside acting judge Kganyago’s ruling. The basis for the application was that NWCC’s legal representative, Vhutshilo Nange, did not have a valid certificate that allowed him to appear on behalf of clients.

The case served before judge Phatudi and he was not very sympathetic towards Nange and NWCC. He declared that all the cases in which Vhutshilo Nange Attorneys had appeared be declared null and void ab ininito (from the beginning).

NWCC’s initial applications to stop the processes were dismissed with cost. Judge Phatudi also dismissed the application for rescission of the default judgment, saying that the appellant had failed to supply a reasonable defense for the late filing of a plea.

The case eventually found its way to the SCA and served before a panel of five judges.

On Monday (14th) the judges made their ruling public and provided clarity on what should happen when a client’s legal representative is discovered not to possess the necessary documents allowing him or her to represent such a client legally.

The SCA provides clarity on situations where legal representatives fall short of the requirements set by the law, especially insofar as the need for a fidelity fund certificate is concerned. “The primary purpose of the fidelity fund is to reimburse clients of legal practitioners who may suffer pecuniary loss due to the theft of money or property that they

had entrusted to an attorney,” the ruling reads. The legislation tries to prevent a case where an attorney is “let loose on unsuspecting members of the public”.

The SCA judges point out that remedies are specified in the legislation, should attorneys not adhere to the rules. A person who acts as a legal practitioner without the necessary certificates may not charge any fee, reward or disbursement for services delivered. The Act also provides for criminal prosecution.

Thavhani Mall bus rank opened

By Silas Nduvheni With the opening of the state-of-the-art Thavhani Mall in Thohoyandou a few years ago, the number of commuters who regularly go there for shopping has increased tremendously.

They experienced many difficulties, however, in getting transport to and from the mall.

Things changed for the better last Friday, when the modern R6 million Thavhani Mall Bus Rank was officially opened. The rank is situated on the lower level parking, opposite the Thohoyandou Stadium.

Ms Maria Mulaudzi, chairperson of the Vhembe Bus Operators, said they were thankful for the opening

of the new bus rank, which would make transportation easier for them and the commuters. According to her, commuters will now be able to travel to and from the Thavhani Mall more easily and safely.

She added, however, that with the increase in crime around the mall, they would ask the police to construct a satellite police station close by, so that policemen could patrol the rank regularly.

Cllr Tshimangadzo Malada of Thulamela congratulated the management of Thavhani Mall on taking the lead in making the life of commuters easier. Malada said the rank was coming at a time when Thulamela Municipality was planning to be a city by 2030 and expressed the hope that

By Silas Nduvheni Tributes are pouring in for the well-known local gospel artist and producer, Emmanuel Mamphogoro, who passed away on Thursday, 10 October, in the Netcare Hospital, Polokwane, after a short illness.

Mamphogoro (48), a former police officer, was described as very supportive to his family, relatives and the community at large. He was also a pillar of strength and a selfless leader, who produced the music of many artists.

He was a staunch member of Vineyard Mission Centre under Pastor Muhovha of Nzhelele-Haraliphaswa village.

Family spokesperson Pastor Edward Mamphogoro, his elder brother, said Emmanuel started singing at an early stage in the church choir and in the male choir under the supervision of Ephraim Mureri.

Pastor Mamphogoro said Emmanuel later studied sound engineering in Gauteng and in 1995 he was trained as police officer. He recorded his first album, Phalaphala Mix One, which is best known for the song Mudi we rau tulushelwa. He also released Phalaphala Mix 2, Yehova nga a rendiwe, followed by Ngei Musanda.

He later formed his own studio, Winman Studio, on the premises of the former embassy in Sibasa and recorded the albums of the legendary Tshivenda group, Adziambei Band, Lebo Sekgobela and Rofhiwa Manyaga, among others.

The chairperson of the Vhembe Music Forum, Dr Roxley Masevhe, described Mamphogoro as a musical superstar because he was an artist, songwriter, sound engineer and composer. Masevhe, who also mentored Mamphogoro, said he came to him in 1993 and taught him how to play the guitar. He was a very fast learner and later taught himself to play organ.

Mamphogoro leaves behind his wife Windy and child, Ipfi, and will be buried on Sunday, 20 October, in his home village of Dzanani Migavhini at 06:30, with his memorial service Saturday (tomorrow) at the Christ Worship Centre in Shayandima, starting at 14:00.

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho A student in podiatry at the University of Johannesburg, Nathaniel Baloyi, has find joy in writing books that aim to change people's lives in this age.

A resident of Olifantshoek village near Tiyani, Baloyi discovered the joy of writing around 2014 when he dabbled in writing after his friend, Chavelelekani Sibisi, had given him a positive response upon seeing his academic essays.

“He kept emphasising that I had good writing skills and that I should consider it as a career,” he said. “At first, I didn't make anything of it, until I decided to try it out when I was home alone the following year. On 15 July 2015, my first piece of writing was born, and it was based on the flowers in a

He posted the piece on Facebook under the title The blossoms, and he received a lot of good feedback from readers. “That is how my journey as a writer started,” he said. “I wrote a lot of poetry, but then I had to branch into other genres, such motivational prose, short stories and novels.”

He takes inspiration from the US poet RH Sin, who has been dubbed The Instagram poet.

“I proudly stand as the author of Water your gardens and wipe away your burdens, which is a book about loss,” he said. “Loss can be losing someone or the meaning of something. Some people lose friends, but others lose the value of themselves. Today we have got a lot of women turning into slaves because they have lost their self-worth. We have a lot of men abusing women because they have lost sense of the true meaning of a woman’s breath.”

He stated the world had reached a situation where relationships had become rivers of death because people had grown out of touch with one another.

“In today’s world, everybody is hurt and all of us are seeking healing but through different outlets,” he said. “Some people seek healing by hurting others, while others seek healing by helping others, but the common denominator is that we are all seeking healing.”

He hopes the book will help people find true healing. “It will help you recoup your loss of meaning in certain aspects of life,” he said. “I wish it could also help you retain the people you lost to death, but it will help you find a perfect place of peace instead. Whatever your struggles, hopefully this book connects with you at a personal level.”

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho The sounds of Zaacci Niguh as he belts out his lyrics leaves local music lovers wanting more from this singer, whose talent is quickly gaining momentum.

A resident of Tshikota, he was born Fhulufhelo Matumba some two decades ago, and he started singing and writing his own songs from the age of 12. He released his first single, Mushumo wo mphelela, in 2013 and the song went on to earn him a big name among townspeople.

“Soon I was receiving calls from Musina and Tzaneen of people who had encountered my music and were all encouraging me to carry on doing the good music,” he said. “So, music means everything to me. I just can't put it in words, but it is everything to me. Without music I am actually nothing.”

He believes that music can influence people in a positive or negative way.

“For example, those artists who rap about how alcohol and drugs are in vogue really influence people around the world, not only in our country, to try those things,” he said. “Those who rap about life, they show us light, and light is what the world needs at this stage.”

He mentioned HaaNdi YellowMah as a young artist whom he looked up to for inspiration. “He is a very strong guy whose confidence in music is infectious,” he said.

Chief Livhuwani Matsila said that the Radzambo Cultural Foundation had been established to provide an opportunity for different communities to exercise their culture. “The main purpose is to form partnerships with different communities,” he said.

He added that the traditional leaders were serious about restoring culture and indigenous knowledge and commended the organisers for the initiative of reviving culture through traditional dances.

He appealed to the youth to respect elderly people and stated that Africans must be proud of themselves, their culture and traditions.

“We must start practising our culture of being proud, so that our children will grow up knowing their identity,” he said.

He added that “traditional dances make us what we are. If we lose our tradition and lose our identity, we must consequently remind ourselves where we are coming from”.

Matsila said that he was going to provide transport to all groups who were going to participate in the finals.

The 14th South African Traditional Music Awards took place in Northwest a fortnight ago.

Issuing of taxi permits is not a one-day process

By Bernard Chiguvare “Anyone who would like to find out about the processing of taxi-operating permits should visit the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety,” said Joel Seabi, spokesperson for the MEC for Transport.

Seabi was responding to an illegal taxi operator’s claim that the department took too much time processing operating permits. The operator, going by the name of Joel, operates an illegal taxi on the N1 between Musina and Beit Bridge.

He says he has been waiting for a permit since 2006. Last month, the Musina Taxi Association (MTA) blocked the N1 between Musina and the Beit Bridge Border Post in protest against illegal taxi operators.

“Issuing an operating permit is not a one-day process. The quicker one is compliant with the requirements stipulated by the department for operating on the said route, the faster the permit is processed,” said

Seabi, adding that he could not comment on the specific claims as he had not done investigations into the particular case.

As part of the MTA’s protest last month, they called on the authorities to clamp down on illegal operators on this route. At the time, a member of the MTA, Mr Jealous Munyai, said that this illegal operation had been going on for some time now and the authorities needed to stop these operators.

“The intervention by law enforcement and the SAPS has been long overdue. We are tired of minibus taxis and cars operating between the Musina and the Beit Bridge border without permits,” said Munyai.

Law Enforcement and the SAPS intervened and promised to work round the clock to stop illegal taxis operating on the said route.

Last week, Limpopo Mirror visited Musina Mall again from where some of the illegal taxis operated.

No sign of any of these operators, including those using their private cars, could be seen.

Soutpansberg resident Peter John Taylor has established himself not only as a respected academic, but now also as a published author with the release of his children’s book entitled Elijah and the Messengers of Death.

Taylor obtained his PhD degree in zoology from the University of Natal and is currently appointed at the South African Research Chair on biodiversity value and change at the University of Venda (Univen). He also co-founded and developed a public bat interest group based in Durban (Bats KZN) that predominately focuses on public education and the rehabilitation of bats. He has authored four scientific books and more than 160 scientific articles.

His love of bats forms the focus of Elijah and the Messengers of Death, as perfectly described in a recent book review compiled by Anna Diegel. She writes: Indeed, something new always comes out of Africa. Peter John Taylor’s Elijah and the Messengers of Death, a novel that addresses young teenagers, reaches far beyond the junior market. At first sight, the book is a classical adventure drama involving three kids who feel “misunderstood” and delight in their newfound solidarity. The scene is rural Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe at the turn of the 21st century. Elijah, a clever schoolboy with quixotic ideals of adventure, makes friends with Jane, a bookish, black-clad oddball of a girl who becomes his kind of Hermione Granger. The children are joined by Thambu, a youngster from the neigh-

creatures with a disgusting habit of clinging to people’s hair. For the Shona, including the elders in Thambu’s community, these animals are “messengers of death” who incarnate evil spirits.

Here the bats live in a cave where they are the guardians of the tribe’s ancestors and they will curse and take revenge on those who cross their path. Bats are blamed for the death of Thambu’s uncle and for the illness of his aunt, who in fact both suffer from

Don’t drill more boreholes, fix the existing problems, say residents

By Bernard Chiguvare “There is no need to budget for drilling more boreholes in our area,” said Gilbert Muofhe from the Kutama Traditional Council. He said the municipality should rather spend the money on repairing and maintaining the existing infrastructure.

Muofhe made this statement after the water supply to the Tshikwarani community was interrupted yet again. The community had to battle without water for four months. On Friday, 27 September 2019, water started flowing through the taps again, but it was only pumped that Friday. The following week, the community once again had no water, up to Friday, 4 October when the water was available again, but only on that Friday.

Matodzi Ralushai, Vhembe District Municipality’s communication officer, said that the municipality was aware of the water challenges in Tshikwarani. “The community should work together with the police to identify those who vandalise water structures.

This will go a long way in solving water challenges in the

area,” said Ralushai.

Muofhe showed Limpopo Mirror the minutes of a meeting between the community and the municipality that was held on 13 March 2019.

The minutes refer to a budget expense of R1,75 million for the testing of water and electrification of another borehole drilled in the Zamenkomste area at Kutama.

“That money should be allocated for maintenance.

The water in our area has been tested and we are happy with the tests. There is no need for testing or coming up with other water projects,” said Muofhe, adding that water and sanitation issues should be run by the Makhado Municipality as the Vhembe District was too big to be run by one municipality.

Ralushai, however, responded by saying that once the Kutama-Sinthumule bulk water supply project was completed, a constant water supply to the area would be in place. The project is due to be completed

by December next year.

Ezekiel Mugwili from Zamenkomste village said, “We are not getting any services from the municipality. There are some elderly people living

alone and they have no option but to push three 25-litre containers in a wheelbarrow for about a kilometre. This is unbearable”.

According to Mugwili, residents in his area have to buy water from those who own boreholes. Twenty-five litres of water cost around R3.

Limpopo Mirror visited family members who were mourning a loved one who had died on 29 September and was laid to rest on 5 October. “For the whole week we had to buy water. We needed water for cooking, drinking and tidying up the place. We used four to five 100-litre containers every day. This is a huge expense for us,” said the family representative, who did not want her name to be published.

The bereaved family had to hire a bakkie to fetch water for use at the funeral. Each trip cost them R200 and each drum cost R35.

Adv Mafanywa Mangammbi said crime prevention should be the first subject to be taught at primary level. “Government, communities, church and traditional leaders should start educating people about crime.

There is no money that will be enough to combat crime. The only way to combat crime is go back to communities and educate them about crime. Even an increase of police officers cannot combat crime, or even the death penalty.”

“We had worked so hard in preparation for the competition, and we are now pleased with the results and the awards we had managed to bring home.”

Elim High School’s coordinator, Mr Emmanuel Nkanyani, said that they had won one prize in the Xitsonga reading category, where they had scored a first position in reading. “This serves as a

learning curve for us, and we will be focusing on developing our reading and book-review skills, so that we do excel next year,” he said.

The Funda Mzantsi Championship is an initiative of the National Library of South Africa (NLSA) in collaboration with the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) and George Municipality. It was established in 2010 for the purpose of cultivating a culture of reading in the country through the assessment of book clubs’ comprehension abilities in areas such as reading, book review, debate, and a spelling bee.

By Silas Nduvheni The new traditional leader of Tshipako village outside Thohoyandou, Chief Ndo Swika Nemavhola, recently donated soccer kit to the local football team, Tshipako Hot Spurs.

The chief was a soccer player in Mavhola village in the late 80s, playing for Goldville Young Tigers, and later he also played for Shayandima Bobs Stars. According to him, they used to play in tattered boots and jerseys in the past and he did not want his team to suffer as they had.

Tshipako Hot Spurs was recently promoted to the SAFA-Vhembe Stream B. Chief Nemavhola said that young people were the future leaders and they must be nurtured well through the promoting of sports. “We understand that when young people are kept busy, less crime is reported in the communities and some hidden talents can be revealed.

We want to develop a sports centre, which will house various sporting codes,” said Chief Nemavhola.

According to Nemavhola, the aim of his donation was to remind the players that if they took their talent seriously,

they might end playing for professional soccer teams such as Black Leopards. “Black Leopards was bought from Tshipako, meaning it originated from his village. We want the soccer players of Tshipako Hot Spurs to emulate the good steps that Black Leopards have undertaken, now playing for the PSL,” added Chief Nemavhola.

The brand manager of Tshipako Hot Spurs, Mr Ntsandeni Mulibana, was over the moon to learn that the chief wanted to promote various sporting codes, which will go a long way to keep young people busy.

Many students miss school days because of menstruating, due to the unaffordability of sanitary pads. The foundation wants to restore the dignity of all young girls who cannot afford to buy sanitary towels,” Nematshema said.

Nematshema said that the foundation was started this year in June. “We don’t want to see a situation where girls use newspapers or old clothes to manage their periods,” Nematshema said. “When growing up, I was surrounded by girls and most of them couldn’t afford to buy sanitary pads.

By Kaizer Nengovhela Makhitha Runga Birds donated three league points to Magau United when they lost 3-2 in the MMK Administrators League match at Makhitha grounds on Saturday.

Birds coach Mr Osmond Ramasala said that the team must work hard on rectifying their mistakes as they prepared for their next match. “We lost last week and now we are really trying to work hard, so that we are ready for our next match,” added Ramasala.

He believes his team are on the right track, despite the

defeat. "We had a few defensive errors that cost us. We made that one error and it resulted in a last-minute goal and gave United the victory," said Ramasala.

“I am really proud of these boys. They really worked hard as a team throughout the match. We had two tactical approaches that I believe we applied really well,” said Magau United’s coach, Mr Bishop Musiamo. “We knew what we had to do if we were to achieve something in this match. We are now looking forward to our upcoming match,” he said.

had been focusing on playing attacking football. He also thanked the supporters. "We messed it up a little bit, in a very dominating 30 minutes where we had our opportunities.

Three schools, Fhatuwani Secondary, Thohoyandou Technical and Thohoyandou Secondary, took part in the one-day event. Marude Secondary, who were supposed to defend the championship last Saturday, pulled out of the tournament a day before the event.

This comes after he was selected during the Collins Sebola Pre-season Cup games that were organised by Mamu Community Development.

He was selected by Bidvest Wits Football Academy's head coach of development, Mr Ashley Makhanya, who had come for talent scouting in the rural areas.

Rowen's trials run on 16-19 October, and if he passes all the tests, he will then join the Bidvest Wits Football Academy as a young player and will be developed to play soccer at a professional level.

“We are very happy, because our main aim is to nurture the talent of young soccer boys and take them to the Premier Soccer League Academy,” said Mamu Community Development's general secretary, Mr Jafter Mamugudubi. The managing director of Collins Sebola Group, Mr Collins Sebola, said that they had undertaken to sponsor Rowen's trip and stay at the academy during the trials.

In 1999 he finished the Tokyo marathon in 2:06:33. The almost seven minutes that Kipchoge cut off Thys’s time may not sound like much, but it is massive.

Kipchoge’s time is even impressive when comparing it to the times SA runners achieved in half-marathons. In August this year, Stephen Mokoka broke the one-hour barrier, finishing the Buenos Aires Half-Marathon in Argentina in 59:51. (The record still needs to be officially recognised). Kipchoge, in theory, would have beaten him by a second and then completed another half-marathon, again beating his time by a second.

Athletes who believe they can be the Kipchoges of the future should consider starting with their training at the Parkruns every Saturday morning.

No entry fee is charged and the event is organised by volunteers. It also makes provision for the walkers who take more than an hour to finish the 5km (who would have been lapped by Kipchoge at least four times). Be there at 07:00 in the summer.

Mountain Rangers through to Benjies final

By Frank Mavhungu Vhutalu Mountain Rangers secured a place in the final of the Benjies Soccer Tournament final, following their 2-1 victory over Zwaloni United at the Khubvi Benjies grounds on Sunday.

The game was a thriller from the onset to the end, with the teams creating and wasting their scoring chances. United, who beat Tshatshingo Potholes 2-0 in their quarter-final match at the same venue the previous day, took the game to Rangers in the first 10 minutes.

They knocked on the Rangers’ door for the first time in the eighth minute. Their frontrunner, Kharendwe Mutshutshu, forced his way through the defence of Rangers and unleashed a half volley from inside the box. The ball hit the crossbar and bounced outside the field of play for a goal kick.

That was a wakeup call to the Rangers players. They regrouped from behind, creating some promising moves from the middle of the park. They took the lead in the 24th minute.

The keeper of United, Zwanga Mundalamo, mishandled the ball after Khuliso Netshidzivhe’s attempt. Tshifhiwa Gandamipfa capitalized on the mistake and beat the keeper with a fine header.

United took control of the game soon afterwards. They retaliated in the 36th minute. Kharendwe Mutshutshu beat the keeper with a header, following a corner kick that was taken by Andani Tshikovha.

Kharendwe Mutshutshu was reprimanded with a card after tackling Khodani Singo the rough way two minutes before the break.

The score was 1-1 when the referee blew the half-time whistle.

Rangers introduced two new faces in the last half. They replaced Tshifhiwa Gandamipfa and Talifhani Munyamela with Mutendeni Nemurura and Mpho Singo respectively.

Livhuwani Nengome of Rangers was also booked for retaliation after he was badly tackled by Andani Tshikovha. Tshilisanani Phalanndwa scored the Rangers’ winning goal in the dying minutes of the game.

Hearts and Stars in draw

By Kaizer Nengovhela Midoroni Real Hearts held the much-feared Makhitha Oscar Stars to 1-all draw in Stream E of the Safa Vhembe MMK Administrators League at Makhitha on Saturday.

The Real Hearts players were out of touch throughout the first half. They conceded a goal in the 34th minute, when Faith Ratombo scored after he had received a precooked pass from Hector Ledwaba.

Three minutes later, Real Hearts’ kingpin, Tsepo Madzhie, disappointed everyone when he beat all the defenders, as well as the keeper, but shot wide. Muladelo Ndou of Stars was yellow carded for rough tackling a few minutes later.

Real Hearts started the second

half at a very fast pace, giving their opponents not a moment to breathe and their midfielders distributed telling passes to the front runners.

Their midfielder, Fhedzani Liphaswa, did not live up to expectations as the defence was all over him.

Real Hearts equalised through Delton Simali, who hit the back of the net from the penalty spot. His team received the penalty when Tsepo Madzhie was brought down inside the penalty area.

Stars had an opportunity for another goal, but Lebohang Mphashe shot into the hands of keeper Mulalo Mulaudzi. Ndamulelo Maimela of Stars should have scored from the free kick awarded after a Real Hearts defender pushed his opponent. His shot hit the crossbar and bounced back into the field of play.

Coach Erol aims high

By Frank Mavhungu After parting ways with their Serbian-born coach, Mr Momcilo Medic, last month, Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM) appointed Mr Erol Akbay as the team’s head coach last week.

Although he has spent only a week with the team so far, Akbay has much to tell about Vhadau Vha Damani. He revealed that he had entered into a three-month contract with the Tshakhuma side.

He further stated that the contract had an option for extension. According to him, he will sit down with the management of the club at the end of the contract and take stock. He also stated that his performance with Vhadau in the next three months would inform the management about his future with TTM. When asked about his plans for the team, Akbay said that his aim was to collect at least 20 points in the nine league matches they will play during his contract period. He stated that he watched from the grandstand as TTM played to a goalless draw with Richards Bay FC at the Thohoyandou Stadium two weeks ago.

Akbay said that what he had observed in that game was that TTM played entertaining football and that the strikers needed some guidance when it came to finishing. He also stat-

ed that he was impressed with the team’s fighting spirit in that game, although they could not find the net. He said, however, that he was worried about the quality of the players, although TTM had a squad of 26 players.

According to him, the quality players he had could only make up a good starting team, saying it would be difficult for him to find suitable substitutes when the need arose, due to the lack of quality players in the camp.The 53-year-old mentor further stated that he was impressed by the team’s perfor-

mance in their friendly game against Black Leopards at the Ladanna grounds in Polokwane last Friday. The game ended in a 1-1 draw.

Akbay will sit on the team’s technical bench for the first time in a league game against Steenberg United FC at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town tomorrow afternoon. He will be assisted by the club’s former marketing manager, Mr Lucky “King Mchichwa” Nelukau.

Nelukau worked as TTM’s assistant coach to Mr Sello Chokoe until January this year.

Leopards and Park in Telkom clash

By Frank Mavhungu Black Leopards and Highlands Park played to a 1-1 draw in their Absa Premiership League match at the Thohoyandou Stadium last month, and they will meet again in their Telkom KO Competition match at the Makhulong Stadium in Thembisa on Sunday afternoon.

This time around a winner must be determined. Should no winner emerge at the end of regulation time, an extra 30 minutes will be added. In case no winner has been determined after extra time, the teams will go for penalty shootout.

This match is the second official one for Mr Luc Eymael as the Leopards’ head coach. He sat on the team’s technical bench for the first time in their home game against Mamelodi Sundowns three weeks ago. Lidoda Duvha lost 1-2 to Sundowns.

Thabo Matlaba, the Leopards’ skipper, who watched their game against Sundowns from the grandstand because of injury, will be available for selection on Sunday. Should he be given the chance on Sunday, Matlaba is expected to form a good combination with Khuliso Mudau and Pentjie Zulu in the backline.

As for the Park’s crowd pullers, Rodney Ramagalela and Marks Munyai, the time has come to rub shoulders with their former teammates. Munyai and Ramagalela are products of Lidoda Duvha.

Mamelodi Sundowns will host Amazulu at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria in the other match that will also be played on Sunday.
