Poverty killed them

The brother of a woman who, together with her 21-month-old daughter, died in an inferno, attributes their deaths to poverty.

That was Peter Mathalise’s reaction during the funeral service of his sister, Amukelani Mathalise, at the weekend.

Amukelani Mathalise and her daughter, Tendani, of Tshitomboni outside Thohoyandou, were killed when a fire consumed them while they were clearing an old rondavel whose roof had caved in.

According to several of the community members, the Mathalise incident is “one of those unfortunate burocratic bungles, where deserving members of the community are overlooked when it comes to government services.”

Ms Mathalise’s name has been on the housing list for some time, but when it came to allocations, Lady Luck always evaded her.

She is part of a family of eight, who were crammed in a two-roomed house with a roof that is completely damaged and which could collapse at any given time. Poverty is at its worst in the family.

Community members

knew of her plight, but did not do anything to assist her, and she did not have any other option but to provide shelter for herself.

It is alleged the woman and her child did not have a place to sleep after her rondavel had collapsed. Most of her neighbours were lucky and got RDP houses, but her name was not on the list. Ironically, even people who had better houses received government houses, while she was unlucky.

Out of frustration, she bought some cheap poles to renovate the collapsed rondavel and she was busy preparing for it to be rebuilt, when tragedy struck.

The mother of the dead woman, unemployed Joyce Khoza-Mathalise, said she was at the back of a rondavel at about 05:00, when she saw big flames. “I decided to investigate what was happening, only to find that the collapsed rondavel was

on fire,” she said.

She said she tried to help the two, but the flames were vicious at that stage and she decided to call for help from people at a nearby tavern.

She said the people came in their numbers and tried all they could do to save the two, but could not see where the baby was.

“They only managed to take the mother through a small window. The baby was consumed by the deadly flames as we watched helplessly. She died a terrible death,“ she said.

The baby was buried last week and the mother was taken to the hospital, where she died later.

The sad brother of the deceased woman, Peter Mathalise, said: “Government failed my sister by not allocating her a house with others.

She would not have died, but poverty drove her to an early death,” he said.

He said all his sister wanted was shelter for herself and her baby, but she did not live to see her dream materialise.

The local ward councillor, Thina Mbedzi, said the Mathalise tragedy was one of those things that happened when people least expected them to happen.

“We knew about her plight, and out of the surplus 48 houses we had in the ward, one was identified for her. It is sad that the house will only be built after her death,” she said.

Univen students urged to popularise foreign policy The Deputy-Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Mr Ibrahim Ishmael Ibrahim, has urged students of the University of Venda (Univen) to help his department by popularizing the department's foreign polices.

"We have been transversing from one province to another in an effort to build bridges between our department and various other stakeholders, such as the media, NGOs, CBOs and acadaemia to popularise our foreign policy.

We want to ensure that ordinary South Africans can link our country’s domestic priorities with our department of international engagement,” said Ibrahim.

Makhado Municipal officials, who are affiliated to the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu), took to the street on Tuesday as part of the national strike over wage disputes. The organization is demanding an 18% salary increase.

Ibrahim was speaking in the University of Venda’s auditorium, where he addressed more than 1 000 students and academics on the position of South Africa’s United Nation’s resolutions on Libya and the Libyan crisis. Univen has about 600 students who are studying international relations.

According to Ibrahim, the visit to Limpopo was part of Government’s public participation programme. He believes "that Univen has the necessary human

resources capital to serve as an engine that drives regional growth and development strategy well beyond the borders of this country."

The principal of Univen, Prof Peter Mbati, said that the university council had approved international relations as one of the degrees they offered, and as such they were ready and looked forward to working with the department of international relations in popularizing the department’s foreign policies.

One of the dedicated commu- community and the leader of the passed away in a private hospital in nity builders of the Soutpansberg Kutama clan, Khosi Peter Kutama, Polokwane last Tuesday night. He was 55 years old.

During his life, Kutama was the chairperson of the National House of Traditional Leaders, the Minister of Education in the former cabinet of the then Republic of Venda and he also served on the first Makhado Transitional Local Council. He also worked for the Public Works Department of the former Venda Homeland Government. He was the chief of the Kutama area outside Louis Trichardt.

Kutama also served as the interim chairperson of SADC House of Traditional Leaders, known as Khotla.

At the time of his death, Kutama was the chairperson of the constitutional development committee in the house of traditional leaders.

Kutama was born on March 3, 1956, at Tshikwarani Ha-Kutama. He was the grandson of Chief Makhado Tshilwavhusiku and was installed as chief in 1989.

Family spokesperson Mr David Kutama said the family was saddened by the chief's death. He added that the chief will be laid to rest at the Ramabulana Royal cemetery of Songozwi this week.

The chief executive officer of the National House of Traditional Leaders, Dr Wilson Makgalancheshe, says Chief Kutama was a man of vision.

"We will always remember him for his hard work, commitment and dedication," he said.

The MEC For Local Government and Housing, Mr Soviet Lekganyane, expressed his condolences to the Kutama family. Lekganyane said Chief Fhumulani Peter Kutama.

Kutama served the country with diligence. "He was instrumental in the establishment of the National House of Traditional Leaders in South Africa. He will be remembered for his hard work," said Lekganyane.

Kutama was depicted by Gen Gabriel Ramushwana, the former chairman of the Venda Council for National Unity, as a hardworking, dedicated, strict man who hated corruption. "He was one of very few people I trusted and relied on during my time. As the Minister of Education, he helped me a lot. Wherever he went, he would encourage people to take education seriously," Ramu­ shwana said.

"Most of the development that occurred during the time of the Venda government was his ideas. The man loved development. We have really lost a charismatic, disciplined and enthusiastic leader."

Makhado Mayor Cllr Mavhungu Luruli expressed her heartfelt condelences and support to the Kutama Royal Family. She said that Kutama contributed to shaping the local government system. "He was a selfless, visionary and dedicated leader of all people. He was a champion of social and economic transformation in South Africa," she said.

Luruli also mentioned that "Kutama was a leader who understood that as a traditional leader, one must transcend all boundaries and represent the hopes, interest and aspiration of all people, to realize a better life."

Kutama is survived by his wife, three children and three grandchildren.

Victim empowerment centre for Vuwani The Deputy-Minister of Police, Ms Makhotso Sotyu, officialy opened the new victim empowerment centre at the Vuwani Police Station two weeks ago.

Sotyu said that the centre would help to prepare victims before they went to court. “It is at this centre where professional people will give counseling to the victims of abuse,” she said.

Sotyu said that victims of abuse needed to be treated with respect and dignity. “The victims have the right to be treated with fairness, respect, and courtesy in Chief Vusani Netshimbupfe (right) congratulates the Deputy-Minister of Police, Ms Makhotso private, without discrimination.

protection to the victims,” she added. According to her, children and women sometimes fear to report a crime, so the centre will help them so that they are able to testify on what exactly happened. “The centre will protect the victims against victimization by their abusers,” said Sotyu. She said she was pleased to learn that the Vuwani Victim Empowerment Program had engaged itself in many activities since 2003.

“The programme has engaged in empowering people regarding activities such as domestic violence, child abuse, women’s rights, children’s rights, sexual

assault, human trafficking, women abuse, and alcohol and drug abuse,” she added.

Sotyu said she was concerned about the alarming spate of killings of police members on duty.

A traditional leader, Chief Vho-Vusani Netshimbupfe said that the centre had to grow and be strong, like the centres in big cities. “I applaud the opening of the centre; it will help fight crimes of the abuse of women and children,” he said.

The official opening of the centre, according to Sotyu, is in line with Women’s Month celebrations.

Court gives final warning to a smiling Mthembi A cheerful and smiling Doris Mthembi (39) briefly appeared in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Ritavi by the police’s Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU). She, together with Nelly Lekgetho (54), was arrested on June 24 – the same day the seizure took place. Both were charged with fraud and released on bail.

Mthembi and Lekgetho allegedly defrauded Mugwena of more than R600 000 in 2008. They were allegedly working for Mugwena at his Injected Private College in Thohoyandou when they told students to pay tuition fees to them instead of depositing the money into the college’s bank account.

The AFU also confiscated land, as well as two houses and three cars, from Mthembi. Nothing worthwhile was found under Lekgetho’s name.

Their case has been postponed a few times since their arrest. They will appear in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court again on August 29.

The court agreed, but gave Mthembi a final warning. Mthembi is to ensure that her advocate receives his fees to represent her on September 7 or else the court will proceed without legal representation.

Businessmen join hands to fight crime As a result of the alarming spate of crimes in the Tshakhuma area, three local businessmen have now joined the police in the war against crime. The three, Dr Livhuwani Dagada (who owns a surgery in the area), Mr Jaco Burger of Tshakhuma Spar and Mr Ahmedali Patel of Tshakhuma VS Supermarket, have jointly and voluntarily contributed towards building a police service point at Tshakhuma for the Levubu police.

The police service point is being built at the Tshakhuma fruit market.

They said that they came up with an initiative to build a service point because they wanted to ensure that the police are available in the area at all times.

“This will also ensure that the police respond in time when there are any criminal activities in the area,” said Patel.

He added that creating a crime-free environment was one of the main objectives behind their contribution. “We also want to create a good business environment for us to continue serving the community of Tshakhuma and the surrounding villages,” added Burger. The three did not only come up with the initiative, but they also injected money to build the offices as a way of getting involved in the war against crime. “We realized that the initiative will also intensify the police patrols in the area.

The police will be right next to the people and everybody will be very safer,” Burger said.

The offices that are currently under construction will start to operate as soon as the construction process is complete, according to the spokesperson for the Levubu police, W/O Solly Mukhola.

According to Mukhola, the

police welcome the initiative and feel greatly honoured to have businesspeople like the three, who are committing themselves to work with the police. “This is just the beginning of a good partnership that will bear fruit,” he said.

He said that the new service point will also reduce costs, as they will no longer have to travel from the police station in Levubu to Tshakhuma. “We will now have members of our police team, who will always be available on people’s doorsteps,” said Mukhola.

Mukhola is now urging other members of the community who are still reluctant to join the police in the fight against crime to come forward.

Tshakhuma is dominated by criminal activities such as robbery, housebreaking and rape.

Several cases of this nature have been reported in the area in the past.

Vhembe to help Eskom in war with Izinyoka The Vhembe District Municipality and different stakeholders have agreed to support Eskom in its efforts to clamp down on illegal connections in the area, something that has seen the electricity utility lose millions of rands.

Opening Operation Khanyisa at Thohoyandou Town Hall last Wednesday, Cllr Falaza Mdaka, a member of the mayoral committee of the municipality, assured Eskom that the municipality would support the fight against izinyoka. “Illegal connections are counterproductive and they are also fatal,” said Mdaka.

He urged different stakehold-

ers to report illegal connections to the municipality and to Eskom.

Members of the Eskom management team made a presentation to different stakeholders and urged them to support the campaign. “Last year, there were two fatalities in Vhembe as a result of cable theft,” said Ntshaveni Nenguda, customer service area manager. He added that Eskom did not want to see people dying as a result of its facilities.

“We are worried about life being lost so unneccessarily, and we are appealing to all stakeholders to come aboard, so that we fight this scourge as a united front.

More lives could be saved this way,” he said.

He urged stakeholders, who included the police, traditional leaders and municipalities, to come together and fight the issue of illegal connections. He said Eskom had lost around R4,4billion rand last year as a result of electricity theft.

Mr Donald Kekana, the regional risk manager, said they were worried about the many deaths that could have been avoided if all followed the correct rules of how to use electricity. He said there were 82 fatalities reported nationally as a result of people’s using electricity illegally.

The Univen Alumni Association gave financial incentives to two students of the University of Venda on Friday.

Kadzai Mandizvidza, the best overall student in agriculture, was given R8 000 and a trophy, while Simbarashe Chirava, the best student in environmental

science, received R3 500 and a trophy. The awards were given at the recent sixth annual symposium on rural development.

The chairman of the association, Thilivhali Nepfumbada, said all former students of agriculture at Univen had decided to plough back into the future by

motivating new students.

He said the prize money was funded by the Natural Resource Management company.“The symposium is also a networking session, where students are assisted on how to get jobs and how to get overseas scholarships, among other things,” he said.

Liivha School recycles In a bid to inform pupils regarding recycling and how it can be benefit the environment, a Univen student has come up with an innovative idea.

Livhuwani Mudau visited Liivha Secondary School last week and launched a campaign where all pupils will be expected to bring at least one empty tin can every day.

Operating under the theme My Home is Green, I am Green, the project seems destined for great things. During the first day at the school, more than 3 000 used cans were collected.

To motivate the pupils further, she advised them to enter a collect-a-can competition, saying that there was a great likelihood that they could win cash prizes that could go towards the development of the school.

Rewards for hard-working pupils To motivate the Grade 12 pupils at Vhulaudzi High, the Khalini Leadership Management Training and Development Agency recently rewarded the top pupils in the midyear examination.

According to Mr Lucas Magadagela of the agency, the main purpose of the certificates was to motivate pupils to study hard. “We want to motivate pupils to stick to education and advise them not use drugs and alcohol,” he added.

He pointed out that the learners should also devote some of their time to school work, instead of spending all their time having fun. He said that

they should divide their time, so that some of it was spent constructively.

The three pupils who produced the best marks in the mid-year examination were rewarded for their hard work. Pembelani Raphunga went home with R2 500 and a trophy, Tshilidzi Vumbi collected R2 000 and a certificate, while Tshimangadzo Nemaorani received R1 500.

The first-placed pupil, Pembelani Raphunga, says there was no doubt that the motivation would play an important role. “I will definitely pass my Grade 12 with flying colours. I will never disappoint the sponsors, my teachers and parents.”

Learning Channel assists Magau schools The three disadvantaged schools at Magau Village recently launched a partnership with the Learning Channel at an event at Sinugani Secondary school last Friday.

The three schools, Sinugani Secondary and Magau and Mutavhanani Primary School officially signed a memorandum of understanding with the Learning Channel in an effort to improve the schools’ results.

This comes after concerned members of the community, who had formed an initiative, the Magau Education Turnaround Strategy, contacted the Learning Channel to assist the three schools.

According to Mr Takalani Mutovu, one of the Sinugani’ alumni, they contacted the Learning Channel after realizing that the standard of education

in the village was “sinking”.

He added that the community had now committed itself to the improvement of education in the village.

The Learning Channel, a collaboration between the SABC, the Liberty Foundation and Standard Bank, delivers curriculum-based lessons to FET learners and their facilitators, through its live week-day broadcast programme on SABC 1.

Learning Channel’s broadcast activities are supported by a mix of delivery platforms, including websites, newspapers, hi-tech audio-visual aids, workbooks and SMSes, to ensure a maximum reach of valuable content to learners.

According to Greyling, her organisation has donated learning materials to a value of R50 000.

“We are giving out more tools

to the teachers at the schools, so that they can work better and improve the results. We have also donated the E-Learning audio material to the schools,” said Greyling.

She added that her organization would also monitor the progress at the three schools to ensure that they improve.

“We are a content-development company and, through the cooperation of both educators and teachers, the standard of education in these schools could improve,” she said.

Three burnt beyond recognition in accident Three people, among them a two year-old toddler, were burnt beyond recognition when a Gauteng-registered vehicle they were travelling in veered off the road, overturned and caught fire, police have said.

Sgt Thabani Mkhwananzi, the local police spokesperson, said the incident occurred last Friday at around 05:00 at the 58

km peg along the Beit BridgeSwereki road.

“An Isuzu bakkie with a Gauteng number plate was traveling from Beit Bridge and heading towards Swereki Village with three people on board. It looks as if, on approaching 58 km peg, the vehicle hit a culvert, resulting in the driver’s losing control. It then veered off the

road, overturned and then caught fire,” he said.

The charred remains of the victims were taken to the Beit Bridge District Hospital mortuary.

One of the deceased was identified as Challenge Nare, and the other two passengers had not been identified at the time of going to press.

New transport system is bearing fruit The Limpopo Department of Roads and Transport’s Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) System, which manages outstanding warrants of arrest for road traffic offenders, is bearing fruit.

According to the departmental spokesperson, Mr Thesan Moodly, the system is working and has netted 1 693 offenders

in the Capricorn and Vhembe districts from April to July this year.

“A total amount of R808 057 has been paid by traffic offenders, as a result of the system’s operations during this period.

This includes the R62 000 settled by Phadziri Bus Company, after 79 of its drivers were arrested in the Makhado area,”

Circumcision school owner apologises High Court rules against farm occupation A Limpopo circumcision school owner, whose school made headlines last month by closing prematurely, has come out to clear the air and to say sorry.

Mushaathama John Tshirangwana (65) of Ha Budeli-Nandoni outside Thohoyandou, who had a school at Madimbo, shocked the community when he left his school in the care of a caretaker and opened another school at Musina. The caretaker surgeon later absconded from the school, leaving the initiates in the lurch. He allegedly left with all the money that the parents of the initiates had paid for their admission.

The unceremonious departure of the surgeon shocked the village and the initiates were taken to a place of safety for them to complete the ritual.

At the weekend, the disgraced surgeon visited Mirror’s offices to “put the record straight”.

“I admit I have wronged the nation. I have brought the tradition of circumcision into disre-

pute. I exposed the closely guarded tradition. People should know that it was not my intention and beyond my control. The incident is unfortunate and it will never happen again,” he said.

It was difficult for Tshirangwana to explain how he found himself being the talk of all in the surrounding villages. “I used to have a helper who assisted me during the circumcision period, but the man is said to be having his own school in the Gauteng area. I made a mistake by opening another school in the Musina area and could not manage the two schools as I did not have reliable transport. That is where everything went wrong,” he said.

He said he was forced to seek a helper who at first appeared that he could do the work in a professional way, but the opposite was actually true. “People had warned me against this man, but I had confidence in him and I hired him. He did exactly what the others had warned me about.

He disregarded all the set rules and even went as far as leaving the initiates alone while I was in Muisna,” he added.

Tshirangwana said he had been receiving bad reports from Madimbo, but could not act as he was manning another school. He said the last straw came when he heard that the man had fled the area with some of the initiates and left the rest on their own. “I rushed there, only to find that parents had taken their children and the elders of the village had placed them in a safe area for them to complete their training,” he said.

He said he performed some rituals and burnt everything that was left there. “I am very disappointed. This man just wanted to destroy my reputation, my clean record,” he lamented. He said he would be visiting the house of traditional leaders to seek forgiveness. “I have messed up things and I have to put them right. I will soon be visiting the Mutele traditional authority, the house of traditional leaders and the premier to apologise. I feel that they will forgive me. Fortunately, there has been no fatality at either of my schools,” he said.

Meanwhile, Khosi Vho Vusani Netshimbupfe, chairman of the Limpopo government’s task team on initiation schools, said they had already Circumcision principal John Tshirangwana received a report on all traditional circumcision says he is sorry, after his initiates were left in schools. The recent illegal selling of stands for the purpose of township development on a repossessed agricultural farm just outside of Louis Trichardt was not an isolated incident.

On the same day that hundreds of wanna-be property owners descended on the farm Welgevonden to pay their R120 deposit for a stand, the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria granted an urgent interdict against the illegal occupation and demarcation of stands on a farm near Elim.

The application for urgent relief against illegal occupation was brought on July 28 by the 71-year-old Mr Edward Mafune and his wife Masundwa, registered owners of portion 1 of the farm Hayani 51, portion 3 of the farm Doornspruit 41 and the remaining extent of the farm Uitspanning 40.

This follows after members of the Ramaru community started demarcating stands on his farm along the fence bordering the Mpheni informal village. The first respondent in the case was Chief A Ramaru, second respondent Mr George Ramalata, third respondent Mr Rakuambo, fourth respondent Chief M F Davhana and fifth and sixth respondents Mr O Maumela and the Regional Land Claims Commissioner.

In his founding affidavit, Mafune stated that he had gathered that the Davhanas and Ramarus had both lodged a land claim on his farm on behalf of their communities. However, Mafune stated, he had not been served with any documentation pertaining to the land claim, nor had he been advised that the land claim had been Gazetted. In the

affidavit he submitted, however, that the publication or validity of the claims was irrelevant for the purpose of the urgent relief sought.

Mafune’s troubles started on July 13 when he, whilst inspecting his farm, came across several stands being laid out on his property.

Here he met a Mr George Ramalata, who told him that Chief Ramaru was the person responsible for allocating stands and allowing demarcation to take place and that they were within their rights to do so.

The following day, Mafune asked the Makhado Municipality for assistance in the matter, but the municipality merely referred him to the Department of Land Affairs, where he managed to lodge a complaint. According to Mafune, the department had met with the Davhanas, as well as the Ramarus, but had failed to involve him as the legal owner of the land in any discussions.

By July 20, the illegal occupation and demarcation of stands continued.

On this day, Mafune met Mr Rakuambu on his property, who was busy allocating stands and allowing people to cut down trees and clean demarcated areas. “… on my last inspection on 26 July, I established that the Davhanas were now joining in the intended occupation and preparation to occupy as the result of the first and third respondent’s action,” Mafune stated in his affidavit.

Seen in light of the Department of Land Affairs’ failure to involve him as someone with a direct and substantial interest in negotiations, Mafune stated in his affidavit “that there is a threat-

ened invasion of my property and having regard to what has happened in the past pertaining to unlawful occupation of land and the pitfalls that landowners face in order to get people evicted from their land, that the relief sought is the only viable remedy that I have against the intended unlawful actions by the respondents.”

Mafune further stated that if occupation took place, the whole process as envisaged by the Restitution of Land Reform Act would be circumvented.

As basis for the urgency of the interdict, Mafune argued that “it is clear that the demarcation will now proceed to full-scale occupation.”

The matter was heard by Justice De Vos in the High Court on August 2, with a ruling in Mafune’s favour. De Vos ordered that the respondents be interdicted from allocating, demarcating and/or taking any actions in furthering or promoting the occupation of any portion of the said farms. The respondents were also ordered to remove any demarcation or allocation of land within 12 hours from service of the court order.

The respondents were also prohibited from entering onto Mafune’s land for any reason whatsoever.

As for cost, De Vos ruled that the first, second, third and fourth respondents were jointly and severally ordered to pay the costs of the application on a party and party scale, the one to pay the others to be absolved. No order as to costs was made against the fifth and sixth respondents.

The respondents undertook to abide by the ruling.

The police at Levubu police are urging members of the community to help them find a dangerous suspect, Bolton Tshisudi (26).

He is wanted for various cases of attempted murder, housebreaking, theft and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Tshisudi is a resident of Tshakhuma. According to the Levubu police spokesperson W/O Solly Mukhola, Tshisudi escaped from the police cells last year. “We are appealing to members of the community to furnish the police with the whereabouts of this man,” he said. Mukhola warned members of the community against trying to apprehend Tshisudi. “He is dangerous and whoever sees him must alert the police,” warned Mukhola. Cable theft crisis hits Siloam The police at Siloam are urging members of the community to work with them in the fight against cable theft in the area.

This comes after a group of thieves, also called Izinyoka, has been terrorizing Siloam and the surrounding villages by stealing the electricity cables.

According to the villagers, the theft of the cables is one of the reasons for the poor service delivery in the area.

Several institutions, which include schools, the Siloam police station and Siloam Hospital, have been severely affected as a result, with communi-

cations to several institutions having been cut-off. The phones at the hospital are currently not working and some of the services that need networks like the Internet are also not working. This is now forcing community members, who used to apply for birth certificates at the home affairs department at the hospital, to travel to other home affairs offices for help.

The police at Siloam are now appealing to members of the community to come forward and furnish them with relevant information that can bring the culprits to book. “We are appealing to anyone who has information

One person was killed while two others were seriously injured when a South African-registered cross-border bus they were travelling in was involved in a head-on collision with a heavyduty truck.

Police spokesperson Sgt Thabani Mkhwananzi said the incident occurred last Thursday evening at the 233km peg along the Beit Bridge-Masvingo road.

“The vehicle, a South African-registered crossborder bus was travelling from Johannesburg and heading towards Harare. On approaching the 233km peg, the driver spotted stray cattle in the middle of the road. It looks as if, upon trying to avoid hitting the animals, the bus swerved onto the lane of oncoming traffic, resulting in a head-on collision with an ERF truck,” he said.

One person, Reggis Masango of Chivhi, died on the spot and his body was taken to Masvingo General Hospital mortuary. The injured were also rushed to same hospital, where their condition is reportedly stable.

Mkhwananzi said they were now investigating the incident.

R2 billion needed for infrastructure at Univen If the recent fundraising dinner by the University of Venda is something to go by, their R2 billion capital-fundraising dream could soon be a reality.

The university has held several fundraisers in the past, but the one held recently at Fusion Boutique Hotel in Polokwane has been hailed as one of the most successful. The event was aimed at raising funds towards the university’s R2 billion capital campaign. The money is used to be for development at the university.

The MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Mrs Joyce Mashamba, gave the keynote address during the event. Mashamba urged businesspeople to consider donating funds to the university for the purpose of funding various projects. Univen vice-chancellor and principal, Prof Peter Mbati, called on businesses to donate funds generously in order for them to be able to reach their capital-funding dream for infrastructural development at the university.

Mbati said the money would ensure that the university met its future commitment to the people and communities of Limpopo Province and the country at large.“Funding is needed for infrastructure development – both academic and physical,” he added.

The university has taken up its responsibility as an important catalyst in the

growth and development of Limpopo.

This is in line with the successful university model in which academic programmes and research activities are in harmony with the development needs of the community.

Mbati alluded that the budget for urgent infrastructure developments totals R843 million. “This budget will provide for four new student residences, a 24-hour study centre, an information technology centre and a new mining engineering building.

“Other infrastructure developments include a science park, new lecture halls, a new building for the School of Health Sciences, a new health clinic, a new academic community training centre, and an indoor sports centre and other improved sporting facilities,” said Mbati. He added that the budget for medium-term projects came to more than R155 million.

“This includes a new building for the School of Law and a legal clinic, a lecture theatre, an exploratorium and natural history museum, a retail centre, a staff recreation venue and staff housing and accommodation for visiting professors and researchers.”

Mbati said over the past four years R500 million was spent on campus infrastructure development. “Current projects under construction total nearly R272

million. These include a new Life Sciences building, a new female residence, a new student administration building and a new building for the School of Education. A research conference centre is also being built, the student cafeteria is being upgraded and extensions to the School of Agriculture are being done, while a research office complex is being constructed.

He said a lecture theatre complex had been completed, as were extensions to the School of Environmental Sciences.

Other infrastructure upgrades include the construction of electrical installation infrastructure, campus roads, walkways and an upgrade of the campus stadium.

Developments on the academics side include positions to improve research output.

These include research professors, senior professors, assistant professors, professors extraordinaire, distinguished teaching professors, professors of the practice, clinical professors and teaching assistants.

The chairperson of the Univen Foundation, Mashudu Ramano, indicated the intention of establishing a fund in which the 5.3 million people of Limpopo would be called upon to donate R1 per year per person.

Like many other municipalities, the Mutale local municipality took the responsibility of giving two paupers a dignified funeral. The two paupers, Maphosa Kudakwase and Useman, were recently given a funeral in the Tshilamba-Mutale town graveyard near Phalama Village. The spokesperson for the Mutale local municipality, Mr Thiathu Ravhura, says the municipality in which the corpse is found, is responsible for conducting a dignified funeral. He added that it was the second time that Mutale Municipality had conducted a pauper’s burial. Last year, five paupers were buried by the municipality. Zim police officer in court for bribery A 30-year-old Zimbabwean police officer at Beit Bridge and a friend were hauled before the court a fortnight ago, for allegedly extorting money from illegal immigrants who intended to cross into South Africa through the Beit Bridge Border Post.

Salatiel Marima, a police officer, and Amos Bvunzawabaya (29) of Dulibadzimu suburb in the border town pleaded not guilty to bribery charges, when they appeared before a local magistrate, Mr Carrington Karidzagundi. The case was postponed

to August 15, and the two were remanded in custody.

The prosecutor, Mr Jabulani Mberesi, said that on July 30, Marima and Bvunzawabaya went to the Beit Bridge Border Post where they waited for border jumpers intending to cross into South Africa illegally. The court was told that Marima took his police identity card with him and the two men proceeded to the border post.

On arrival at the border, they allegedly came across three border jumpers, who were in the company of three children, and

they demanded R50 rand from each, so that they could allow them to cross into South Africa illegally.

The border jumpers failed to raise R50 and offered the accused persons R20 for each child, after which they then crossed the border illegally. An alert police detective, who had been monitoring the two men’s criminal activities from a distance, arrested them soon after they had pocketed the money.

A search was conducted, leading to the discovery of the R60 from Bvunzawabaya.

She was addressing hundreds of Musina community members who converged at the Lesley Manyathela Stadium last Sunday. Phiri and her council invited community members in order to thank them for voting them into power.

“We are in power because of you and it is very important to thank you in public. There

would be no mayors and councillors without the mandate of ordinary people who voted for them. You are the most important people in this municipality, and we will continue to engage you in municipal activities to make sure that we move together to develop our communities.”

Phiri added that the emphasis of the historic gathering lay in ensuring that people got a good sense of the council.

“We want to make sure that people have a good sense of

how the council functions and make sure those who work for the council have a clear idea of the problems people may have. We are ready to listen to all of you. If you feel that there is something you would like to advise us on, our doors are open. The council alone cannot deliver efficient services without the involvement of the communities.” She said effective communication with the masses helped the municipality to transform local areas into a better place to live and work.

Fined for illegally connecting internet Two South Africans based in Musina were fined for illegally connecting the Internet to three companies in Beit Bridge.

Jacques Botes (22) and Louwrens Roos Jacobs (38), both employed by Barrach Technologies in Musina as information and communications technicians, were convicted on their own pleas of guilty to contravening sections of the Telecommunications and

Immigration Acts. They appeared before a Beit Bridge magistrate, Miss Gloria Takundwa.

The two men were each fined R2 000 or four days in jail while their company was fined R4 000 for operating in Zimbabwe without a telecommunications licence.

The prosecutor, Mr Jabulani Mberesi, said between January and July, Botes and Jacobs en-

tered Zimbabwe through the Beit Bridge Border Post, using South African passports, and they installed Internet facilities for three companies in the border town.

The pair did not, however, have valid work permits to operate in the country, the court heard. They were arrested by police detectives, following a tip-off.

In a continuous effort to strengthen the municipality’s ties with businesses in Louis Trichardt, Makhado Municipality’s mayor, Cllr Mavhungu Luruli, officially opened the new Nando’s Restaurant in Songozwi Street last Wednesday. Luruli said the municipality would continue to support all businesses that operated within its jurisdiction. “We are happy that the restaurant has opened at the same time that we are trying to turn our town into a city,” she said. Luruli encouraged the workers to take their jobs seriously when it comes to rendering services to the customers.

In an attempt to clear the Mapungubwe Conservation area of litter, the park has launched a clean-up initiative in which people can be rewarded for picking up rubbish. The first winner of this initiative was Cedric Setlako, who picked up a plastic bottle with R250 hidden inside. In addition, Cedric also received a food voucher, sponsored by Musina Spar, to the value of R250.

This drive, according to the park’s senior section ranger Stefan Cilliers, was launched after he watched a beer can lying at the entrance gate for three weeks. “Congratulations to Cedric, [he is] truly a good example”. Arrested for smuggling children into SA A 32-year-old, unregistered Zimbabwean cross-border transport operator was fined US$600 or five months in jail, for smuggling a group of border jumpers into South Africa.

Kenias Mhlanga of Bulawayo was convicted of assisting border jumpers by a local magistrate, Mr Carrington Karidzagundi. In addition to the fine, Mhlanga was further sentenced to five months’ imprisonment, which was conditionally suspended for five years.

The prosecutor, Mr Reason Mutimba, said on August 9, shortly before midnight, Mhlanga drove his Gauteng-registered Toyota Quantum minibus from Bulawayo to Beit Bridge.

The vehicle was carrying a group of border jumpers, among them 21 undocumented children.

On arrival at Beit Bridge, he then helped the border jumpers to cross the border into South Africa through an undesignated entry point along the Lim-

popo River. The court heard that Mhlanga later drove to the South African side, where he picked them up.

He was, however, spotted by SAPS members while loading the border jumpers into his vehicle.

He was promptly arrested. The illegal immigrants were taken to the South African home affairs

department and later handed over to the Zimbabwean authorities.

Among the border jumpers were seven adults and they were taken to the Beit Bridge Police Station, while the minors were ferried to the Save the Children (UK) centre in the border town, where they were offered temporary shelter.

Dynamos to face Vasco da Gama in next NFD clash After losing 0-1 to Sevutsa Stars at the Kanyamazane Stadium in Mpumalanga last Saturday, Dynamos will be back home this weekend.

They are gearing themselves up for a tough league match against Vasco da Gama, with whom they will lock horns at the Giyani Stadium tomorrow (Saturday).

Dynamos will be playing against a side whose spirit is high after collecting three points in their opening league match. Vasco beat African Warriors 4-2. Dynamos must keep a close eye on the strikers of Da Gama, Brent Adonis, Keenin Lesch and Zeka Karkee, in order to avoid a lifetime embarrassment.

On the other hand, it will be a suicidal mistake for the visitors from Cape Town to look down upon Ri khomeni ri nga peli.

The recording session also saw the return of the evergreen and founding lead singer of Worship House, Lufuno Dagada, who has been absent from his father's band for some years. Lufuno also performed a song with the group.

Makhubele joins Leopards’ coaching team After parting ways with assistant coach Joel Masutha last month, Black Leopards have hired the well-known Limpopo U/17 coach, Abel "Abemak" Makhubele, to assist head coach Sunday Chidzambwa.

According to the club’s brand manager, Tshifhiwa Thidiela, Makhubele’s appointment came into effect on Monday. Thidiela further revealed that they had entered into a three-year contract with Makhubele.

A Beit Bridge resident was sentenced to a fine of US$200 or four months in jail for ill-treating his donkeys.

He was found guilty of overburdening the donkeys with an excessive load of firewood and brutally whipping the animals, resulting in their sustaining severe injuries.

Livhuwani Sibanda (20) of Siyoka village outside Beit Bridge was convicted on his own plea of guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to animals by a local magistrate, Mrs Auxilia Chiumbura.

Airtime card leads to man’s death An 18-year-old resident from Maronde Village outside Beit Bridge recently died from injuries he sustained, after jumping from a moving bakkie while trying to retrieve an airtime recharge card that had fallen on the ground.

The local police spokesperson, Insp Bulisani Bhebhe, confirmed the incident that took place at around 12:00 near Tshitanda Farm on Monday. Bhebhe said the victim, Chaka Merevesa, was a passenger in a Toyota Hilux.

"The victim had a cellphone (airtime) recharge card in his hand that he was trying to use and, upon their approaching Tshitanda Farm, the card was blown out of his hand," said Bhebhe.

Merevesa then reportedly jumped from the moving vehicle in a bid to retrieve the card. He fell and suffered serious head injuries.

Soon after noticing the incident, the driver stopped the vehicle and ferried the victim to a local hospital, where he died the following day.

“We are appealing to community members to desist from jumping off moving vehicles as they risk their lives,” said Bhebhe.

It was testified that the two men were confronted by the VAWZ employees, and they were ordered to reduce the load on the cart. The two men defied the order and continued to abuse the three animals pulling the cart, prompting the VAWZ employees to intercept the cart.

They removed the harness from the donkeys and set the animals free.

A report was made to the police, leading to the arrest of Sibanda. His accomplice is still on the run and police have since launched a manhunt.

The donkeys were photographed by VAWZ employees and the pictures of the injured animals were also produced as evidence in court.

As if their 0-2 defeat at the hands of Orlando Pirates last Friday evening was not enough to stir up their team’s supporters, Black Leopards lost another Absa Premiership League match.

Bloemfontein Celtic beat them by the same margin on Tuesday evening at the Seisa Ramabodu Stadium in Bloemfontein.

It was clear from the opening minute that the Leopards’ defence was going to be tested as Hlompho Kekana came close to scoring in the first minute, when his 18-yard shot just missed the target. Despite their lack of composure at the back, Leopards were the first to force a keeper into a save. After good individual work in the 11th minute, Raymond Monama worked his way into a striking position about 20 yards out from goal. His effort was superbly saved by Patrick Tinyemb.
