Netshitongwe said in court papers that her late husband, Elias Miriri, had entrusted her with the management of the family’s affairs. She serves as the “mother of all members of the UAAC” and as such exercised the power of archbishop, in consultation with the relevant organs of the UAAC. Netshitongwe alleged that the intimidation started prior to her husband’s death and that he had obtained a protection order against David Mureri.

Judge Phathudi found that it was clear that Netshitongwe “was hands-on the management of the church even prior to Elias’s death”. He also found that the status quo prevailed after Elias Miriri’s death and that the structures established by the respondents were not in accordance with the provisions spelt out in the UAAC’s constitution. He declared that the structures, such as the Mureri Royal Council, the UAAC New Cabinet and the New National Executive Committee, were invalid.

Judge Phathudi agreed with the applicants that they had no alternative other than to ask the court for protection via an interdict. “They nurtured the church even during the lifetime of Elias. They reside at the property and have since 1966 been residents thereat. What other remedy will they have if their houses are demolished or even evicted, worse still, being sent back to Zimbabwe? The court not only ruled that the structures set up by the respondents were invalid, but it also set aside the appointment of Chief Livhuwani Matsila, chairperson of the “new cabinet” of the UAAC. Chief Matsila, David Mureri, the Mureri Royal Council and members of the new national executive committee have been interdicted from interfering with the management of the UAAC. Mureri was further interdicted from meddling in the affairs of the late Elias Miriri and he may not enter the homestead of the family.

During a meeting on Sunday, they pointed fingers at the police for not doing anything to arrest the perpetrators.

Earlier this year, unrest broke out and five houses and two cars were set alight at Gogobole when the community accused a ring of criminals of burglaries, where stealing TV sets is the goal. Roads, shops, and schools were closed during the unrest.

One of the community members, who wants to remain anonymous, said that the community would take the law into their own hands, should the police fail to curb the on-going crime. He said that the residents were fed-up with crime and thugs had been terrorising the community for a long time. He disclosed that housebreaking and theft cases in the area had reached an intolerably high number, but the police were dragging their feet to address the problems.

A 22-year-old plus-size model, Mpho Gift Matodzi, is set to conquer the modelling world.

The Makonde-born model is one of the finalists in the 2020 edition of the Miss South Africa Plus World. Matodzi said she wanted to empower plus-size women. “I joined the pageant because I felt my dream is to inspire other plus-size women to gain confidence and love themselves as they are. It should not end in Venda only. Many girls are experiencing body shaming in our communities.”

She said she wanted to put a stop to body shaming in society. “As I was growing up, I experienced bullying. Opening up about this is very hard and emotionally challenging. I want to change the stereotype that beautiful women are petite or slim. However, plus-size women are beautiful and full of different amazing talents that a lot of people have not yet realized.

That is why I believe that women should not be boxed into one type of beauty,” she said in a previous interview with Limpopo Mirror.

“I aim to achieve a lot through this pageant and help those in need. I would also like to see other plus-size young women join plus size pageants. You must love yourselves and be confident enough not to let your body size limit you from doing what you love,” she said.

Matodzi believes that modelling brings out the best in her and has helped her to regain her confidence.

Journalism in a crisis, but not because of no readers

By Anton van Zyl Journalism in South Africa, much like in the rest of the world, is facing a crisis. The Covid-19 pandemic has exacerbated the problem, leading to the sudden closure of more than a dozen of SA’s magazines and newspapers. The reason for the closure is not, however, because of a decline in readership.

Last week, the SA National Editor’s Forum (SANEF) released a report analysing the impact Covid-19 had (and still has) on journalism in the country. The report highlights the industry’s reliance on advertising as a main source of income.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has effectively taken that pie away and what is left is a news industry desperately looking for new ways of sustaining itself while audience demands for timely, credible but free news surges,” is stated in the report’s executive summary.

The report states that not a single sector of the South African news landscape was spared the destruction of Covid-19.

The plunge in advertising caused losses of between 40% and 100%. For those publishers hoping to tap into the growth in digital audiences, little relief could be found. Even though digital readership flourished in most markets, revenue possibilities are limited, with “Google and Facebook soaking up the lion’s share of online advertising revenue.”

The surge in online readership also showed up some very

interesting patterns. Whereas the more structured and generally wealthier readers spent more time online, the rural and township readers seem to have consumed less news during the peak lockdown period.

When comparing the statistics of the websites for Zoutnet’s two newspapers, the Limpopo Mirror and the Zoutpansberg­ er, the different user patterns are quite noticeable. The two newspapers serve different markets in the Vhembe region, with the Limpopo Mirror catering for a more rural readership.

The Zoutpansberger, with its Afrikaans/English combination, is more focused on towns such as Louis Trichardt.

Fascinating figures In January this year, the Zoutpansberger’s website, according to Google Analytics, recorded 14 657 users, with 28 952 pageviews. The 28-day active user count stood at 14 066. In February, the figures dropped inexplicably on all sites. This drop was quite possibly caused by countrywide Internet connectivity problems, mainly because of the damage to both the WACS and SAT-3/WASC submarine cable systems.

During March, the website traffic was still fairly subdued, but in April, the first month of the lockdown, it skyrocketed.

The users increased to 31 580, with 50 997 pageviews and 30 547 28-day active users.

In May, the number dropped

slightly, but the website still recorded 30 672 users, with 46 110 pageviews. Most of the users (89,5%) used their cell phones to access the site during April. In May, 93,02% of the users logged in from South Africa, compared to 80,94% in March.

While the Zoutpans­ berger was gaining online readers, the Limpopo Mir­ ror (at first) seemed to have lost them. In January, the Mirror’s site logged 143 746 users, who visited 274 104 pages. The 28-day active user count stood at 141 502.

As was the case with the Zoutpansberger, the figures showed a dramatic drop in February, picking up slightly in March. In April, however, the Mirror’s online readership took a plunge, with only 45 736 users visiting 70 761 pages. The stats also showed that the traffic started moving from 63,46% South African visitors in January to 83,94% SA visits in April.

In May, when restrictions on movement were partly lifted, the traffic on the Mirror’s website started going up again.

In May, 77 857 users visited the site, opening up 175 908 pages. The percentage of SA users increased to 88,64%, with 87,19% accessing the site via mobile devices.

Check the figures When statistics “break a pattern”, checking these against other indicators is often the

The statistics used in the SANEF report, however, rely heavily on the figures for March. The report recognises that certain news websites saw a downward trend in traffic in April, the first month of the complete lockdown. Websites such as Daily Maverick, on the other hand, saw a 29% increase in traffic.

One of the explanations for the downward trend in some markets may be the high cost of data in South Africa. Newspapers such as the Limpopo Mirror serve a market based in rural areas, where the cost of data is a limiting factor. Whereas the more affluent readers in the cities and towns could retreat to their homes with good Internet connectivity, this is not the case in most of the Vhembe region. Using 3G connectivity to access news websites is expensive, something that clearly showed in the statistics.

SANEF’s report paints a gloomy picture of the future for journalism, with more pressure on dwindling advertising revenue options. Online readership is growing massively, with an increasing appetite for quality and well-researched news.

The Covid-19 pandemic also showed that big parts of South Africa do not have easy access to online media, mostly because of the high cost of data and the necessity to use technology such as smartphones or computers. Many still rely on traditional media, such as community newspapers and radio.

At the age of 20, he considers himself lucky enough that he had gained national popularity through his music. “It all has to do with the quality of my lyrics and sound,” he said. “Music is not in the talk, but it lies there in the making.”

A resident at Ha-Mphego village, EazySA’s journey as a singer started way back in his village when he was a member of a local church choir.

“I believe that I heal people through music, as I sing about issues or conditions or circumstances that the majority of people are going through,” he said.

EazySA, who has produced

single hits such as Fulufhelo (ft Trustic), Sivhara (Dovey & Munymax), and Thetshelesani, said that he could not imagine a life without music. “Music is everything to me,” he said. “It's actually more like oxygen to me, and I can't live without it. Music can control people's emotions. It has the power to unite people and lift up their spirits. I personally think it also has the power to change a person.”

He looks up to Bellafonte Mawela for inspiration. “This is one of our own highly talented artists who inspires me,” he said. “He's a good singer and he spreads positive messages to his fans or listeners; that’s what I like about him.”

Razzmatazz resurrected in form of Masindi Entertainment Those who think that the legacy of former legendary presenter of the erstwhile Radio Thohoyandou and Radio Venda, Russel Razzmatazz Mashige has faded into thin air should reconsider their thinking. This is because Razzmatazz’s golden voice has been resurrected in the form of Mulalo Masindi, famously known as DJ Mawelewele in the radio industry.

Masindi, who draws his inspiration from Razzmatazz, is one of the most loved and famous presenters at Vhembe FM. He presents Zwa Afrika, a programme that promotes African music, religions, traditions, and heritage.

The programme is on air every Sunday between 18:00 and 22:00.

“I used to imitate Razzmatazz when I was still young. I would never move away from the radio when Razzmatazz was on air. At times I would visit Radio Thohoyandou just to see him presenting, and that ignited my inspiration. I made an undertaking with myself that one day I would be like my radio hero, Razzmatazz.

Besides being a renowned radio presenter, Masindi is a multitalented public servant and entertainer who wears many hats. A member of the South African Police Services (SAPS), he started his primary schooling at Mutshetshe and completed his Grade 12 at Milton Mpfumedzeni Secondary School. He then enrolled with Fuba School of Drama in Johannesburg, where he specialized in speech and drama. He is involved in doing voice-overs for radio adverts with various production companies. Before joining Vhembe FM, he worked for Univen FM, The Voice Community Radio station in Mayfair, Radio 1584 in Lodium, Ngoma Lungundu FM and Soshanguve Community Radio.

He shares the recipe of his success with his fans. “When you go on air, you should be fully prepared. Know your subject matter and do research about the music of the artists you are going to play on air. Also make sure that you treat your listeners with respect because they have different views. Over and above, make sure that you use acceptable language because you are addressing people from different backgrounds, age groups, cultural and religious beliefs.”

Help for struggling families during lockdown Phalaphala FM is giving away R55 000 as a way to help poor families during the Covid-19 lockdown in a competition called A ri phalalane Covid-19, in which listeners choose the struggling families.

The competition will run for almost two months, and each family will get R2 500. The competition will run from June to the end of July.

The acting station manager, Ms Sharon Ravele, said that the listeners would need to send in a three-minute audio clip in which they nominate a needy family within their area who they feel deserve to win the R2 500. They must send the clip to the WhatsApp number 072 897 8325.

She said that the competition tag line is: Phalaphala FM A ri phalalane, and the messages can be sent daily from 13:00 to 15:00.

The message must contain the description of the family’s situation and their contact numbers. The identified families will be chosen, their situation validated, and they will then be allocated to different programmes.

The audio clip will be played on air and the family will be interviewed on air for the prize.

“We understand that some communities are not working due to the fact that their jobs were put on hold during this difficult period of Covid-19.

We have encouraged people to stay at home during the lockdown, but we have to give out some food money to help to buy food for those people who have serious challenges in getting food,” she said.

She said that the station was faced with daily calls from listeners for assistance for poor people who could not afford to buy food during the lockdown. They would always try to find ways to help poor and needy communities, she said.

Ravele said that the station was doing all they could to make life better for communities.

She expressed appreciation for the generosity of the donors.

“As public broadcaster we have to take care of the poor,” she added. “We have big challenges of unemployment and poverty in our community. Those who are blessed should share their blessings with the less fortunate,” she said.

The lucky winners will be interviewed on daily programmes such as Nne navhone, Vhandilani, Dzia orowa, Tshiko, Riadzedza, Gondovhugala and Mustindo wa Reggae.

Meet the talented artist Black Dee

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho Wanga Mudau, musically known as Black Dee, is soaring higher as a talented artist who has been in the industry for some time.

A resident at Magau village in the Sinthumule area, Black Dee is an artist-cum-producer whose aim as an artist is not just to churn out vibey music and then the matter ends there.

He aims to continue to release music that makes a massive impact in the industry and spreads motivational messages within South African communities.

“My goals or mission as an artist is not only aimed at selling my music or my studio but promoting young and upcoming artists who are not only led by fame,

but are hungry for genuine music,” he said. “As a singer, I have learnt to give an ear to different genres, an expertise that also comes in handy when I get to work with other artists in the studio.”

Just like any other youngster with ambitions, Black Dee’s enduring love for music has seen him spend plenty of his time trying to make some sweet melodies on his android phone. “That was being innovative, in a way,” he said. “I was doing it for fun, and, of course, for the love of music.’

His journey in the music industry was given a boost in 2016 when he managed to set up a studio of his own at his home. “In my basic studio at that time, I managed to record an extended play (EP), entitled Vhusi­ wana,” he said. “Well, the EP never went viral or became as popular as I wanted it to be, but because of my very own ambitions, I kept on hustling, just like any ordinary upcom-

ing artist and managed to release my EP, Bekezela, professionally.”

Bekezela was officially launched and released with the help of Future Stars Media on 1 January 2020. It comprises eight tracks.

“To me, music is more than just making melodies for people to hear but also to proclaim that, indeed, music is life,” he said. “I aim to keep the legacy as an artist with my music, so that tomorrow’s youngsters should also believe in the arts and know that music is art and art still exists. As we all have our careers, music is my career and part of my life. I am a self-recorded and -produced artist, signed under Future Stars Media, and managed by my manager, The Diamond Voice,” he said.

MJN Foundation donates food parcels to Sinthumule community

By Kaizer Nengovhela Residents of Tshiozwi, Gogobole, Ravele and Phadzima were all smiles when the MJN Foundation donated food parcels to needy families at the Sinthumule Tribal Offices last Friday.

The handover was attended by different structures in the community, and orphans staying at the local AFM church also benefited.

The representative of MJN Foundation, Mr Victor Nengovhela, said that they were doing all they could to make life better for the community.

“We have several projects to ensure that our people do not go to bed hungry. Some of our community members

are being absorbed and get temporary employment, thus fending for their families.”

He expressed appreciation for the generosity of the businesspeople who helped. “We could not just sit and pretend as if we do not see their suffering. Times are hard for all of us, but you can imagine how it feels for someone who does not have an income,” he said.

“We are confident that our donation will encourage other different institutions to put more effort into community development. The people on the ground need our assistance in terms of nation building and poverty alleviation.”

One of the beneficiaries, Mr Mpho Ramovha, said “I really

want to thank MJN Foundation, and may God bless them for what they did. You know, it was as if they knew that the situation was becoming difficult.”

Vhavenda Vho-King Sinthumule from the Sinthumule royal council thanked the MJN Foundation for their contribution to ease poverty in the community. He challenged other businesses and institutions to play a leading role in the development of the communities.

Vuu “chief” and his sons get bail

By Kaizer Nengovhela The self-proclaimed chief of the Vuu in the Vuwani area and his two sons, who were arrested by the Hawks two weeks ago and accused of selling stands illegally, were given bail.

The three suspects, Nelson Ramathithi (57), Mulalo Ra-

mathithi (32) and Khathutshelo Ramathithi (30), appeared in the Vuwani Magistrate’s Court last Tuesday for a bail application on charges of fraud and were given bail on Friday.

Nelson paid R3 000 bail, while his two sons were given bail of R1 000 each.

Their case was postponed to 31 July. The three suspects were

allegedly selling parcels of land illegally in the Vuwani area for R3 500 each.

In 2014, Ramathithi and the Vuu community were at loggerheads with the Makhado Municipality about land, but after the demarcation, the area subsequently resorted under the Collins Chabane Municipality.

Bail for axed Vhembe MMC member

By Silas Nduvheni The recalled former member of the mayoral committee (MMC) in the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) who had allegedly sent intimidating video clips of a pistol firing bullets to the executive mayor of Vhembe, Cllr Dowelani Nenguda, and Thulamela Mayor Avhashoni Tshifhango, was granted bail of R3 000 by the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

His case was postponed to 25 August for further police investigations. A condition of his bail was that he must not interfere with witnesses in any manner, not go to their houses

and not communicate directly or indirectly with witnesses, said the regional spokeswoman for the Limpopo Director of Public Prosecutions, Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi.

This came after his new legal representative, Adv Engelbrecht (SC) had lodged an urgent application with the court, arguing that her client was entitled to be released on bail as was his constitutional right.

Mr Ndivhuwo Calvin Radamba (38) was one of the recalled members some three weeks ago. He was arrested on Saturday a fortnight ago by the South African Police Services’ provincial investigation unit and tracking team at his home in Polokwane, after he had al-

legedly sent intimidating video clips to the two complainants.

The video clips show a firearm being loaded and then discharging bullets, while a struggle song can be heard in the background as the gunshots go off but without showing the targets.

Community builder passes away

By Silas Nduvheni The deep rural village of Folovhodwe in the Niani area is in mourning, following the passing away of a community builder, Mr Fhatuwani “The Best” Rananga (53).

He died on 11 June in the Donald Fraser Hospital after a short illness.

His friend, Mr Hardlife Mudodovhi, said the community of Folovhodwe and surrounding villages had lost

a community builder and philanthropist who had helped young people to develop some soccer skills.

“He used to organize a soccer tournament during June and give away great prizes to the winning teams. He also donated school uniforms to the poor learners who are serious about education,” said Mudodovhi.

Simon Ramabulana never hung up his soccer boots

By Kaizer Nengovhela Simon Ramabulana never hung up his soccer boots. He is known as Mzekezeke, but local elders gave him the name Nyakanyaka because of his style of dribbling.

He started loving and playing soccer at the age 13, when he and his friends, Robert Livhoyi and Tshikonelo Ndou formed a small team, called Zero Pirates. He then went on to play for Tshikuwi Stone Breakers (A team) in 1979.

“I remember when I scored the winning goal in my first game against Tshifhire United.” He was a feared and respected midfielder.

He even played for teams at Bushbuckridge, namely Shatale United and Mapulaneng Health Centre, alongside the likes of former Kaizer Chief defender David “Goingup” Nyathi.

During his time with Stone

Breakers, he won many trophies and the league several times while campaigning under Dzanfa, Vedfa, Great North East and the third-division league in Venda. He played alongside Robert Livhoyi, Pro Ramalamula, Scorpion Ndou, Wiseman Mudzili, C to C Makhonya Mudau, Killer Mulaudzi, David Mulaudzi, Ace Muthelo, Salthiel Phasha, Kaizer Rankhododo, Mabena Masakona, Ace Ramabulana, Elias Thathani, Mukosi Mulaudzi, Rhee Magada, Lawrence Tshivhase and Disco Tshivhi.

He was part of the Stone Breakers team that played in the National Professional Soccer League (NPSL) first division when things were still difficult for progression to higher levels. He also played for divided Orlando Pirates, divided Moroka Swallows, divided Vaal Professional and De Beers Westbury at that time.

He was requested to assist at one stage when Black Leopards was playing for promotion. He played against Phalaborwa FC, Dangerous Darkies and Ratanang Maholosiane. Unfortunately, the team did not make it in the last game.

He once became the captain of Stone Breakers, Makhado College of Education, and the Venda squad in 1985/86. He cannot forget players such as the late Innocent “Tornado” Mulaudzi of Tshiozwi Dynamos, Ace Ramabulana, Joseph “Maria” Maphaha, Shadrack Matidze, Manda Musenwa, Magic Ratshivhadelo, Chris Mahandana, Shoni Mudzielwana and Tshildzi Ndambakuwa in the Venda squad.

His brother, the late Donald Ramabulana, recruited him to join Sibasa Black Leopards when Stone Breakers was banned in Vedfa, but he went back to his team when it regained its status in the third

division.

He never hung up his soccer boots. His eagerness to play compelled him to form a team with Mabena Masakona, the Songozwi Masters. The team is currently campaigning in the masters’ league.

He is the principal at Frank Ravele High and holds a master’s degree in education. He keeps on encouraging the youth and assist them in many ways, buying them soccer boots and balls.

His message to the youth is that a sportsman is a disciplined person.

“Alcohol and drugs are not brothers and sisters to soccer. The chances of success are at your door. Soccer and education are brothers and sisters. Play soccer and continue with your studies; you will not have time for beer,” he added.

Big dreams for coach Screamer Themeli

By Frank Mavhungu Mr Maanda “Screamer” Themeli is one of the local football coaches who have some impressive stories to tell.

Born at Ngwenani Ya Themeli village outside Thohoyandou about five decades ago, Screamer did not have enough chance to play competitive football at club level during his time. He played for Raluswielo Secondary School before proceeding to Mphaphuli High where he completed his high school education.

While at Raluswielo and Mphaphuli, Themeli was a registered player for a local football club, Makwarela Blue Birds. He hung up his soccer boots in the early nineties to pursue his coaching career. That was the starting point of his road to fame.

The first club to appoint him as coach was Makwarela United Scientists, where he had served as assistant coach to Mr Trinity Matshinyatsimbi between 1992 and 1993. United Scientists achieved a lot within a short space of time during Themeli’s stay at the club. He later migrated to Lufule Price Busters FC after accepting a job offer from Mr Solly Mashau.

His next stop was at Sibasa All Stars FC. He guided Sibasa All Stars

to promotion to the Venda Football Association Super League. According to him, Mr Thivhonali Khorommbi Nemavhola, the then head coach of ISD Thohoyandou FC, encouraged him to attend a Level One coaching course in Polokwane.

Themeli’s first achievement after completing the coaching course was to win the Nike U/14 national championship while he was the coach for the Great North East Province squad.

He later decided to improve his coaching qualifications by enrolling for a course in Sports Management with Boston City College. He later moved to Black Leopards where he served as assistant to several coaches, including Jacob Sakala, Boebie Solomons, Mlungisi Ngubane, Bibie Mtombo and Gavin Hunt. He singled out Mr Gavin Hunt as a person who had played a major role in his growth in the coaching industry.

After leaving Black Leopards, Themeli guided several SAB League teams, including Maelula United Brothers, Tshiozwi Dynamos, Madombidzha Arsenal and Western Stars, to championships.

He started to plough back into the communities by staging an annual soccer tournament, the DMT Themeli Heritage Soccer Tournament, from 2017.

Asked about his future, Screamer revealed that he was in the process of establishing his own development football club, called DMT FC.

Thulfa clubs must pay up or face expulsion

By Frank Mavhungu Clubs affiliated to the Thulamela Local Football Association (Thulfa) have until the 15th of next month to pay up their outstanding affiliation fees or else they will be expelled from the league.

According to the chairman of the association, Mr Ephraim “Makhanda” Singo, the nationwide lockdown that came into effect about three months ago has done the association more harm than good. Singo said that they normally allowed the clubs to pay half of their affiliation fees at the beginning of the season and gave them until the end of the first-round matches to settle their accounts. Singo said that most of the teams had been left with two matches to complete their first-round activities when the lockdown had been pronounced.

He revealed that the association was experiencing some financial constraints because of the lockdown. He further stated that the association’s full-time employees continued to receive their salaries every month after the lockdown. “Apart from the salary bill, there are other expenses like office rental, electricity and telephone bills that we incur each month,” he said.

The former professional referee further revealed that they relied on the

affiliation fees to run the office. Singo also stated that his association managed to complete the current league programme, despite the fact that the South African Football Association, together with the Premier Soccer League (PSL), was still to make an announcement regarding the resumption of the league activities.

According to Singo, the only thing that will be affected are the dates on which the league programme will be concluded. He stated that they would adjust their league programme after their mother body had made an announcement regarding the resumption of the league activities.

Singo further stated that their current league programme was likely to stretch until the end of November. He revealed that although their league programmes normally started in October and ended in June, it would still be possible for them to complete their current league programme within a reasonable time without affecting the programme ahead.

He admitted, however, that it would not be possible for them to accommodate all tournaments and competitions they had staged in the previous years when circumstances had been normal.

He indicated that one of the lost tournaments would be the annual MTG/PIB KO competition because of the time already lost. According to him they should

have started with the competition the first weekend of April. The final for the MTG/PIB KO competition should have been staged on Tuesday this week, 16 June. He added that the Thulamela Mayoral Cup Tournament would not be staged this year either because of the lockdown.

Singo further said that the only competition they would be able to stage was the Mpho Mathoho Electrical KO competition. The competition will be staged at the end of the season as it is an off-season tournament.

Sasol Women’s League programme locked down

By Frank Mavhungu Teams affiliated with the Sasol Women’s League are not yet sure about the date on which the activities for the new season will start. The league programme for the 2020/21 soccer season should have started about two months ago.

Under normal circumstances, the Sasol Women’s League programme starts in April and stretches to December.

The league coordinator, Mr Patrick Seema, said they had been ready to commence their league programme for the new season at the beginning of April and that everything had come to a halt with the nationwide lockdown towards the end of March.

Asked about the level on inconvenience the lockdown had caused them, most of the clubs’ officials revealed that the lockdown was doing them more harm than good. The managing director of Shayandima Morning Stars, Mr Emmanuel Mudau, could not hide his disappointment. He said that his team had been ready to absorb the heat when the lockdown had been announced.

According to Mudau, their preparations for the new season had been at the highest level when everything

came to a halt. He revealed that they had assembled the best squad this year, saying their aim was to finish their league programme on top of the log standings. He further indicated that they wanted to avoid the disappointment they had faced last season when they had missed promotion to the national league by a whisker.

Morning Stars finished their league programme in the second spot last year, two points behind the log leaders, Maindis Ladies. Mudau reiterated that most of the players had gone back to their homes after the announcement of the lockdown.

He added that most of their players came from other provinces. He further stated that they had been forced to release the players as keeping them in the camp would have cost the club lots of money.

His sentiments were echoed by his counterpart from Chippas United Ladies FC, Mr Robson Magoro. According to Magoro, they spent a lot of money in the offseason preparing for the new season, with the hope that the new season would kick off in April. TTM ready to make Limpopo proud

By Frank Mavhungu Acquiring an Absa Premiership franchise is something good, but maintaining it is a different thing. Hopefully, Mr Masala Mulaudzi, the former president of Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila FC (TTM), is aware of this.

Mulaudzi bought the Absa Premiership Division status from Bidvest Wits FC. The deal was finally clinched last Saturday evening, ending the speculation. When asked about the amount he had parted with to procure the franchise, Mulaudzi

said that the club’s status had been given to him at a giveaway price. He revealed that negotiations to purchase the franchise started about three years ago, shortly after he had bought the GladAfrica Championship status from Milano United FC. In an interview with Limpopo Mirror, Mulaudzi revealed that they had already approached the league for an official name change and their intention to play their home matches at the Thohoyandou Stadium. “We have lodged an application with the PSL for an official name change from Bidvest Wits to Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila FC as of the beginning of next season,” said Mulaudzi.

To clear up the confusion, Mr Mulaudzi made it clear that he had bought the status of Bidvest Wits FC and not that of Wits University. According to him, the two entities were confused by most fans, who could not distinguish between the club and the university.

When asked why they were not keeping Mr Hunt as the team’s head coach, Mr Mulaudzi was quick to state that the Cape Town-born Hunt was no ordinary mentor.

He described Hunt as a high-profile tactician who was not easy to maintain.

He said that while it was their intention to appoint a knowledgeable coach for the team, retaining the former Black Leop-

ards coach would not be possible.

He stressed the fact that Hunt was at liberty to apply for the job if he was interested. At the age of 55, Hunt’s coaching history speaks volumes. He won silverware three times with SuperSport United before moving to Bidvest Wits, the club he steered to the 2016/17 season league championship. Some of the teams that Hunt had coached before include Black Leopards, Moroka Swallows, Hellenic FC, and Seven Stars.

Hunt’s monthly salary is believed to be just over R600 000. Asked about the bigname players who were still contracted to Bidvest Wits, Mulaudzi revealed that they were negotiating retrenchment packages with several of them, in line with the Labour Relations Act. According to him, it would be difficult for him to maintain the salaries of all the high-earning players who were still contracted to the club, just like with Gavin Hunt.
