Members of the Sinugani branch of the ANC toyi-toyied in front the Sinugani branch secretary’s and ward councillor’s house on Sunday afternoon at Ha-Magau village in the Sinthumule area.

The group, comprised largely of women, demonstrated in front Cllr Selinah Mamatsiari’s house at Ha-Magau village. They sang political songs, which were meant to unsettle and upset the Ward 23 councillor. One song in particular said that Mamatsiari joined the ANC because she was hungry and needed an opportunity to fill her greedy stomach.

The only placard which the demonstrators carried read: “Fhasi nga u sa da mitanganoni fhasi (Down with the tactics of not attending meetings, down)”.

son Mr Enos Mutepe, who stated that Mamatsiari’s refusal to attend branch executive committee meetings (BEC) and branch general meetings (BGM) led to the unhappiness. “She hasn’t attended a meeting on three occasions and we felt that this time around we had to go and hold our branch general meeting at her home,” said Mutepe on Sunday. “Mamatsiari’s behaviour only tells us that she doesn’t want to adhere to the ANC constitution with regard to branch meetings.”

Mutepe added that Mamatsiari did not consult with the branch when she took certain decisions.

He further accused her of not reporting back to the community when she had attended council meetings. He said people were not informed about the integrated development plan (IDP). “We are passing a motion of no confidence against her as a branch secretary and ward councillor, because

she is irresponsible,” said Mutepe. “She holds no respect for the people who voted her in.” However, the ANC regional secretary, Mr Khathu Netshifhefhe, was appalled and shocked by the behaviour of the Sinugani branch members who toyi-toyied in front the councillor’s house. “If an executive member of the ANC branch fails to attend meetings at least three times in a row, as they are alleging, the branch knows the right channels of communication to follow,” said Netshifhefhe on Tuesday.

“It’s strange and uncommon for ANC members to go and demonstrate in front of an ANC councillor’s home. We’ll investigate the matter and disciplinary action might be taken against those who are in the wrong.” Cllr Mamatsiari says that the toyi-toying has nothing to do with her not coming to meetings, because the deputy secretary always attends the meeting in cases where she

(Mamatsiari) has sent an apology. She states that the whole thing was orchestrated by former Ward 23 councillor Jeanet Matumba. “I am now living in fear because of Matumba and her followers,” she said. “I hear that she used her car to deliver the people to toyi-toyi in front of my house. But I’ll use the relevant channels to address this issue with the ANC regional office.”

Mamatsiari’s daughter, Fulufhelo, witnessed the demonstration from behind the fence of her home. She said that she did not wish to see the violence and damage to property, as seen in the national media, happen to her home. “My 16-yearold nephew has been experiencing nightmares after those people had come here,” she said. “I’m worried because he’s about to write exams. How is he going to concentrate? They said they were coming back.”

Man (18) charged with rape of girl An 18-year-old man appeared in the Tshilwavhusiku Magistrate’s Court on a charge of rape, which allegedly took place on 16 September.

Mutshidzi Muravha is alleged to have raped a 15-year-old pupil at Manavhela village. It appears that the teachers at the pupil’s school noticed that the girl was

not as happy as they knew her to be and suspected that something might have happened to her. The victim informed the teachers about the incident, and the principal then called her mother to tell her that her daughter had allegedly been raped. The spokesperson for the Tshilwavhusiku police, Const Munyadziwa Marindi,

said that the victim’s mother then went to the school, where her daughter stated that she had been raped. “The police were alerted about the incident and the girl was taken to the hospital, where a doctor examined her,” said Const Marindi. The case was postponed to 6 November. He remains in custody.

Madzivhandila chieftainship in court battle Chieftainship battles are an age-old tradition in the Venda culture, which led to people saying Vhuhosi vhu naka nga u vhangwa, which loosely translates into “A chieftaincy is not comfortable if not contested.”

Not long ago, senior traditional leaders in Venda hauled each other before the courts in a bid to stop the throne of the Vhavenda going to the Ramabulana. The case was recently finalised in favour of Toni Mphephu as the rightful Vhavenda King.

Just before the dust could settle, another bitter struggle for chieftainship has erupted. Two feuding factions at Tshakhuma are vying for the Madzivhandila chieftainship, the throne left vacant when Chief Andries Mavhungu Madzivhandila passed away in 2010.

One of the factions, led by Wilbert Madzivhandila of the Tshakhuma royal council, recently installed a chief. The other faction, led by acting chief Naledzani Madzivhandila, who was appointed by the Madzivhandila royal family, opposed the move. The royal family is purported to be the only custodian of the chieftaincy

of the Madzivhandila traditional community that has the power to choose a chief. The matter is now in the hands of the court.

Court C at the Limpopo High Court, sitting in Thohoyandou, was packed to capacity with supporters from the two factions during an application by the “acting chief faction” a fortnight ago. The faction lodged an urgent application and sought an interim interdict and other relief.

Acting Judge P Z Ebersohn ruled that the application was indeed urgent. He issued an order, pending the finalization of the review application, calling upon Thikhathali Madzivhandila, Limpopo Premier Cassel Mathale and Mukandangalwo Madzivhandila to show cause why the order should not be granted and made final.

He suspended the recognition of Thikhathali Madzivhandila as chief of the Madzivhandila traditional community. Premier Cassel Mathale was ordered to suspend the appointment certificate (if already issued) or to stop the process of issuing the certificate of recognition.

Mathale was also ordered to stop all the privileges enjoyed

by Thikhathali Madzivhandila.

In addition, the court issued an order that Wilbert Madzivhandila should not organize any meeting whereby Thikhathali Madzivhandila would be appointed as chief of the Madzivhandila traditional community. This also means that no celebratory function in recognition of Thikhathali Madzivhandila as chief of the Tshakhuma traditional community can be held.

Mukandangalwo Madzivhan­ dila, chairperson of the Tshakhuma royal council, said what was happening would make the late chief turn over in his grave.

“When the chief was still alive, these people were nowhere to be seen near him, but now they stand and are claiming the position,” he added.

Reacting through his advisor, King Toni Mphephu said that he had noted the judgement and he was of the view that the courts did not solve chieftainship issues, but the relevant families did. He said if families failed to reach consensus, the matter could be referred to the provincial house of traditional leaders. He also appealed to the Madzivhandila royal house to handle the matter with care.

Greater Mapungubwe Heritage Route launched The premier, Mr Cassel Mathale, said the provincial government would inject more than R2 million into completing the Mapungubwe Museum and Interpretation Centre in the next financial year, so that research students could be accommodated.

Besides preserving culture and artefacts, the move is also aimed at promoting tourism in the province, Mathale said. “We want researchers and scholars to do their archaeological research projects at Mapungubwe under one roof. In the past, some archaeological artefacts of Mapungubwe were kept at Wits University and the University of Pretoria, and our research students were forced to travel long distances,” said Premier Mathale.

the launch of the Greater Mapungubwe Heritage Route in Mapungubwe National Park. He was joined by the acting chief executive officer of the Limpopo Tourism Agency (LTA), Mr Fixon Hlongwani, the MEC for Economic Development, Environment and Tourism, Ms Pinkie Kekana, the Chief Whip of the National Parliament, Dr Mathole Motshekga, Vhembe District Executive Tshitereke Matibe and various mayors and traditional leaders.

Mathale said tourism was one of the economic backbones in the province and urged the communities to promote the Mapungubwe Heritage Site.

The opening of the Greater Mapungubwe Heritage route was part of the 2012 Vhembe Carnival, where the district welcomed visitors from Zimbabwe and Botswana to the Mapungubwe World Heritage Site, the sacred Lake Fundudzi and the Dzata Museum.

Officials of the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) at the Beit Bridge border post have intercepted three haulage trucks loaded with stolen copper cables to the value of about R70 000.

ZIMRA spokesperson Mr Canisio Mudzimu said the first incident occurred last Monday. A truck intending to cross the border into South Africa was intercepted with 226 kg of scrap copper, concealed in a tyre, disguised as a spare wheel.

“We have since established that most of the copper belongs to a local telephone company. Upon arrest, the driver’s explanation was that he had offered transport to the female owner of the tyres, who, he claimed, was taking them to South Africa for repair. Both the driver and the passenger were arrested and they are in police custody,” he said.

In the second incident, which occurred on Thursday, ZIMRA officials intercepted a truck with 610 kg of stolen copper.

“The copper cables were hidden in two tyres,” he said. “We intercepted the third truck shortly after the second. About 350 kg of copper cable, hidden under a folded tent, was discovered in the truck,” said Mudzimu.

Police confirmed the arrests, saying they were continuing with investigations. The suspects are expected to appear in court soon, while a manhunt for their accomplices has since been launched.

“As ZIMRA, we have noted that theft, vandalism and smuggling of copper cables are derailing the economic recovery process and hence we are responding to the proliferation of these vices by making smuggling a profitless enterprise through innovative strategies,” said Mudzimu.

He said they were working with the police in curbing rampant smuggling occurring at Beit Bridge border post.

Lucrative prizes for Tshivenda musicians “A need to groom youth of the future” Excitement and hype have been ignited among Tshivenda music artists.

This follows the recent launch of the first ever Tshivenda music awards. It took place at the Khoroni Hotel last Wednesday.

Many in the music industry, including producers, musicians, sponsors and politicians attended the launch. It was announced that the main event will take place on 17 November. It will be sponsored by the Khoroni Hotel, Vodacom and Phalaphala FM. Two legendary local musicians, Irene Mawela and Paul Mulaudzi, have been nominated for lifetime achievement awards.

According to the father of the idea, Mr Lutendo Nekhwevha, they have put aside R150 000 to finance the prizes. He said the awards would give a platform to

recognize, promote and reward local artists who used the indigenous Tshivenda language while contributing to the growth and development of the entertainment industry in the region.

Nominees are already identified in the divisions for best Tshivenda gospel, traditional and hip-hop music.

The winners will be determined by votes through an SMS line, though there are categories that will be adjudicated by a panel of judges. Speaking during the launch, Vhembe's executive mayor, Tshitereke Matibe, said he fully supported the initiative and that the council would also put the event on next year's budget. He said he was concerned that, with music piracy being rife, artists were having a tough time, with most of them barely able to survive. “We will not

come as guests next year, but we will support this initiative,” he added.

The sponsors, namely Phalaphala FM station manager Freddy Sadiki, Yolanda Bester, marketing manager at Khoroni Hotel, and Vodacom Limpopo's Ishmael Hlomane said they were all excited to be associated with the awards.

The awards have ignited a lot of interest among the artists.

One of the nominees, Lufuno Dagada, said the awards were long overdue. “We have been hearing about awards in other areas, but Tshivenda artists have been neglected for a long time.

This will inspire artists to be more creative and come up with meaningful songs,” said Dagada.

Youths under the banner of the Church of the Holy Ghost from all over the country gathered at the Thohoyandou Town Hall a fortnight ago for their annual youth convention.

The youth convention started on Saturday and ended on Sunday morning. Several day and evening services were held during the event. The camp ended on a high note when the church prayed for the prosperity of all youths in their different fields.

The leader of the church, Archbishop Phelelani Nzuza, who was supposed to be the guest of honour, could not attend it, as he is on study leave in Spain. His message motivating the youth was read during the convention.

The convener of the event, Ms Grace Cibi, said the day was a vision of the late Archbishop Nzuza in 1990. He told the church that there was a need to groom the youth for the future of the church and the country. The day has since grown by leaps and bounds and has become a very important day on the calendar of the church.

"We are grooming future leaders. We teach them how to conduct themselves in a Christian fashion and to encourage them towards positive things," said Cibi.

She said most of the services during the function were led by the youths themselves, with the elders just keeping watch that

things were done the right way.

Reverend Nathaniel Mudau urged the youths to focus on whatever they were doing. He urged those studying to be more dedicated to their studies as the exams were approaching. "Exam times are here and this tends to be the most difficult times for most students.

There is no miracle in passing exams. Even if we pray for them and they do not study, it will not help them,” he added.

"We are also making a call for them to abstain from unbecoming behaviour like indulging in alcohol, drugs and premarital sex as it will destroy their future. Times are bad as we have diseases that could destroy them," he said.

20 Years for raping daughter A 48-year-old man from Vumbachikwe village outside Beit Bridge has been sentenced to 20 years in jail for raping his 13-year-old daughter several times.

The man was convicted on his own plea by a local regional magistrate, Mr Joseph Mabeza. It was testified that during the night of 1 August this year, he had entered into the bedroom where the victim was sleeping with her younger sister.

While inside the room, he ordered his younger daughter, who was still

awake, to sleep.

When the younger sister was asleep, the man ordered the victim to proceed to his bedroom, but she refused.

He dragged her to his bedroom, pushed her on to the bed and raped her. He also threatened to kill her if she disclosed the matter to anyone.

OIM South Africa donates new shelters for Musina’s migrants The International Organization for Migration (IOM) South Africa handed over two new and improved shelters for up to 200 unaccompanied boys and 80 vulnerable female migrants in Musina on Monday.

The R4 million shelters were built under the project called Support to the South African government to strengthen communities of diversity and peace and they were funded by the European Commission and the United Nations Development Programme.

Since 2008, Musina has recorded a high number of migrants, including unaccompanied minors, abused women and other vulnerable migrants.

Many of the women and girls are survivors of sexual and gender-based violence and many of the children have left or lost contact with their families

on their long journey to South Africa.

By July 2012, faith-based organisations that had previously provided shelter and food for vulnerable migrants were finding themselves increasingly stretched by ever-increasing numbers of arrivals.

IOM, in partnership with Musina Mayor Carol Phiri, responded by launching the project to build and upgrade the two shelters, which will provide better living conditions and restore the dignity and basic human rights of the migrants.

“This project is a good example of IOM’s efforts to address migration challenges and strengthen communities of peace and diversity in South Africa through partnering closely with both communities and the government,” says IOM’s acting Chief of Mission in South Africa, Dr Erick Ventura.

The new shelters include new accommodation facilities, furnished living and dining areas, builtin kitchens, running water and sanitation, laundry areas, as well as furniture, including beds with mosquito nets.

“We are happy that the vulnerable women, young girls and boys will finally enjoy humane living conditions and the protection they deserve. As the local municipality, we remain committed to working with IOM and its partners to find solutions to migration challenges in the area,” says Mayor Phiri. The founder of the shelter, Prof Ezekiel Matsaung of the Uniting Reformed Church of Southern Africa, said the shelter was established in September 1988, with the main objective of promoting human rights.

“We make sure that the children go to school and they are in different grades. Last year, two of them passed Grade 12 and they are now enrolled at the University of Limpopo. One is doing LLB and another one is doing BCom. We are happy that this day has finally arrived because these buildings will alleviate suffering in the area of day-to-day service provision to the shelter’s beneficiaries.”

The IOM also upgraded and strengthened the capacity of the Thuthuzela Care Centre (TCC) in Musina by procuring new medical and essential office equipment for the centre and conducting medical forensic training for 11 nurses. They also conducted capacity-building workshops for 17 shelter staff on shelter management, programme management and case management in order to address capacity constraints of community-based and faith-based organizations and shelters in providing protection assistance to migrants in Musina.

The IOM office in Musina continues to provide protection and family-tracing assistance to stranded migrants and unaccompanied minors. The office is also actively involved in strengthening the local response to address the health and social needs of migrants through capacity-building workshops on HIV/TB for health-care professionals in Musina Mayor Carol Phiri of Musina, the European Unions’ Richard Young and IOM South Africa Chief and Beit Bridge. of Mission Dr Erick Ventura cut the ribbon to mark the official opening of the R4 million shelters.

Children receive boost from opera star A South African-born Germanbased opera singer brought good news to children in rural areas, when he came to South Africa with an entourage of opera singers and music lovers.

Musa Nkuna has come back to South Africa and endeared himself to local communities in Giyani and Elim. He has been in Germany for the last 12 years after staying in Switzerland for two years. He recently took a group of people from Germany and Switzerland to inspect the living conditions in Elim, Valdesia and Giyani.

Nkuna is the son of one of the best choral music masters

in Giyani, Leslie Nkuna. On Monday, he met the community of Ngove outside Giyani with his entourage. He had good news for local children in the impoverished area: they can be trained to perform or to make musical instruments. He said he was identifying children from rural areas who could pursue a career in music.

“Some will be taught to play musical instruments, while others will be trained in the field of repairing them. I have many people abroad who can finance our rural pupils to carve careers for themselves in the area of music,” said Nkuna. He urged rural children

to embrace classical music, saying that research had shown that opera music instilled discipline.

Nkuna started the International Classical Music Festival in Limpopo as a way of ploughing back into his community. Last Friday, the event took place in Polokwane and on Saturday in Elim.

A concert was held in Giyani on Tuesday and Nkuna performed with a group from Switzerland.

Nkuna sponsors the Malamulele Adult Choir as well as their Giyani counterparts. “I am ploughing back because I grew up in these areas. Initially, people thought that opera was only for whites. Now the situation has changed and our people must have the benefit of freedom and get into terrains which were forbidden in the past,” he said.

Mr John Khambani, who represented the Ngove traditional council, said the community was impressed by the tourists. “They have even seen our crèche and it seems something will be done about the remaining poverty in our area,” said Khambani.

Ecstatic church members dance after the official opening of their new toilets.

This is one of the fastest growing churches in Vhembe with branches springing up all over the district.

The new branch at Nkuzana lacked basic infrastructure such as toilets and sound equipment, but Faith in Action Nkuzana, under the leadership of Pastor Takalani Nemandivhe, will never be the same, after a well known businessman and religious leader, Pastor David Mureri of Reri’s Insurance Brokers, donated two new toilets and sound equipment worth thousands of rands.

The official handing over was done during a well-attended service at the church's branch at Nkuzana on Sunday. The small church was colourfully decorated

and was filled to capacity with guests and members from other nearby branches.

Mureri was anointed and his wife prayed for by the church during the service. He is very passionate about giving and has made many community-driven donations over the years. In 2010, he surprised many when he donated R120 000 towards the development of education in Vhembe. He donated R200 000 to the same cause the following year. Since 2008, he has identified more than 80 individuals and their spouses in the community, including pastors and Vho Thovhele Gole Mphaphuli, among others, and sponsored free holidays for them.

Mureri, who was accompanied by his wife, Gloria, his family and a few Reri's staff members, was warmly welcomed by the church. In his sermon during the handover, Mureri urged all to fix their eyes on and to glorify God. "Our business is laid on God’s foundation. All the proceeds from the business belong to God and we are just giving back what rightfully belongs to him,” he said.

Apostle Kennedy Sika said the donation was the beginning of a new season for the church.

"God has used Pastor Mureri to start the season here at the church and we are very excited that God sent him to start it here,” said Kennedy.

Big sponsorship for local crèches The Thohoyandou branch of the Old Mutual Insurance company ploughed back into the community in a big way when they donated furniture, toys and other useful necessities to two rural crèches.

The donation, to the value of R40 000, was handed to Tondani Tshirangadzi Community crèche and Mvelaphanda Community Learning Crèche at Hamutsha a fortnight ago. More than 170 children at the two crèches used to sit on the floor and they did not have any toys to play with.

Before the official handing over, Old Mutual staff, led by Mr Tshimangadzo Mantshimuli, took over the chores of crèche staff. They assisted in the feeding of the children and also played with them on the swings.

In handing over the donation, Mantshimuli said ploughing back to needy communities had become a tradition at their company. “When an appeal was made to us for assistance, we made an assessment and the applications were approved. This is a worthwhile investment; we are investing in the future of the country. Children are the future and we should all join hands in nurturing them," he said.

"We have donated millions in sponsorships throughout the country over the years and we will continue doing so.

We urge our communities to keep on supporting us to enable us to continue helping our communities," he said.

Both the recipients, Mesdames Sarah Makhesha of Tondani Tshirangadzi and Azwinndini Manngo of Mvelaphanda Community Crèche, said the donation would greatly improve conditions at the crèches. "We are very blessed to have Old Mutual as a sponsor.

We were wondering as to where we could get chairs and tables for our children until the company came into the picture,” said Manngo.

Faulty cable causes huge loss Ms Rodah Mashamba (50) of Musina Extension 6 (Harper Mine) was devastated when her house caught fire on Friday last week. She is a domestic worker and she supports her family of five on her small salary.

The fire is alleged to have been caused by a faulty electricity cable.

Ms Mashamba lost everything, including food, clothes and identity documents.

She recalls with grief when she got the news for the first time. “I was at work when I received a call at about 13:00. Relatives told me that my house was on fire, and I rushed home.

Members of the local fire brigade came and did their best to extinguish the fire. Fortunately no life was lost, but we suffered serious financial loss. I cannot understand why this happened to me. I have to accept it, because I cannot reverse it.”

With the help of family members and the local ward councillor, Mr

James Kaunda, she managed to replace the roof and doors of her house.

She thanked all the people who offered help and requests kind-hearted community members to assist her in restoring her electricity connection, providing food and household equipment, such as furniture and kitchen utensils.

Cllr Kaunda, who spent the whole day working to repair the house, says he has been touched by what happened to one of his people. “I had to cancel every important meeting to make sure that I spent time assisting this family. I would also like to thank all the relatives and community members who came on board. I urge those who can donate anything to the family to do so in order for them to enjoy life again like all of us.”

“We are grateful to the many who always heed to our appeal for blood but often crises are inevitable if donors are not available to donate,” says Vanessa Raju, communications manager at SANBS. “These crises often occur due to fewer Group O blood collections.

Group O blood is known as the universal donor and can be given to

patients of any other blood group, making it the most sought-after blood type,” added Raju.

These words were read to hundreds of people by Cllr Carol Phiri, the mayor of Musina, when she signed a statement of public service commitment during the annual Batho Pele (putting people first) Day activities that were held at the Campbell Sports Centre in Musina a fortnight ago.

According to the pledge, the office bearers will put the people first in carrying out their duties and will respond to their needs through consultation and participation.

“As civil society, we shall ensure that we strengthen our partnership with the public, by making use of the platform for consultation and participation to inform and influence government’s decision to cater for the needs of people,” she added.

Phiri also promised that they would make individual and team

performance count when it mattered through exemplary leadership.

The Batho Pele initiative was first introduced by the government on 1 October 1997, to stand for better service delivery to the public. The Batho Pele initiative aims to enhance the quality and accessibility of government services by improving efficiency and accountability to the recipients of public goods and services.

The Batho Pele principle requires that eight service delivery principles be implemented. These include regularly consulting with customers, setting service standards, increasing access to services, ensuring higher levels of courtesy, providing more and better information about services, increasing openness and transparency about services, remedying failures and mistakes and giving the best possible value for money.

The municipality also used the event to view progress pertaining to service delivery to the people and the impact that government programmes are having on their lives. It was also an opportunity for political leaders to educate

and inform members of the public about issues of governance, such as challenges and successes of the government.

Most of the issues raised by community members were in relation to the provision of electricity, problems with acquiring identification documents and provision of more houses. Apart from the challenges faced by the municipality, other community members also praised the local government for the good work in implementing different projects for the improvement of the lives of the people.

Phiri told the huge crowd that their concerns would be addressed by either the municipality or sector departments. “We are happy that all of you can see that the government of the day is delivering, despite the fact that we have lots of challenges.”

One of the community members who attended the event, Rosina Mudau said: “We have seen lots of development here in Musina after the dawn of democracy. The fact that our leaders are here today shows that they care and we will continue to support them to build a better society.”

The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) road show, scheduled for 9 November at the Beit Bridge border post, has been moved to Bulawayo in Zimbabwe to 17 November.

The campaign is aimed at raising public awareness about the new banknotes which come into circulation before the end of the

year. The campaign around the new South African banknote series, honouring former president Nelson Mandela, was launched in early September by Reserve Bank Governor Gill Marcus.

The road shows will include demonstrations with the new banknotes and informative material about the new banknotes will

be made available.

In Vhembe road shows will be held at the Thohoyandou Taxi Rank from 07:00 until 10:00 on 7 November. The next day, it will take place in the Shoprite parking bay at the Mvusuludzo Mall from 09:00 until 17:00. A similar event will be held on 9 November at the taxi rank in Musina.

Study to investigate effects of insecticides

Are there health consequences to using pesticides for malaria control in Limpopo?

A new research study has started at the Tshilidzini Hospital to investigate insecticide exposure and health effects from the practice of “indoor residual spraying” (IRS) for malaria control.

Malaria is a parasitic disease that infects approximately 250 to 500 million people and kills nearly 1 million per year worldwide. To fight malaria in Limpopo, the Department of Health uses IRS, which is the application of insecticides to the walls inside buildings to repel and kill mosquitoes that spread malaria.

While IRS has greatly reduced malaria rates, more research is needed to ensure that there is no unwanted/unnecessary contact with insecticide with people living in sprayed homes and possible health effects to pregnant women and children. In an effort to find out more about the issue, the University of Pretoria and the University of CaliforniaBerkeley started a collaborative research study, called the Venda

Health Examination of Mothers, Babies and their Environment (Vhembe). The main goals of the study are to see how people are exposed to these insecticides, if they affect the health of children, and to see if they are any ways to reduce contact.

“Although no definite evidence has showed that IRS insecticides are harmful to health, we want to make sure that we are lowering the spread of malaria in the safest and best way possible,” said Prof Riana Bornman of the University of Pretoria, a lead researcher in the study. Bornman has led many studies in the area and lovingly refers to Venda as her Homeland. “Public health officials around the world will be looking to our study to answer very important questions,” she said. The Vhembe study will research these questions by registering 750 pregnant women, measuring the levels of insecticides within their bodies through blood samples, and then tracking the health of their babies for at least two years. This will help indicate if a relationship exists

between the levels of insecticides in the mother’s body and how her baby grows and learns.

Dr Brenda Eskenazi is another researcher on this study from the University of California-Berkeley. She has studied maternal and child health for over 30 years and believes the Vhembe study is needed. “While the benefits of decreased malaria infection are clear, the effects of exposure to these insecticides have not been studied enough. We also want to know how to lower exposure to the mothers and babies,” she said.

A community advisory board has been formed to engage the local community and help guide study activities. R3 000 or six months in jail for thief

A 28-year-old Beit Bridge man, who jumped out of a moving police vehicle while being taken to the police station, was fined R3 000 or six months in jail on Friday.

Tonderai Nyamadzawo of the Dulibadzimu suburb in the border town was convicted on his own plea of guilty to charges of escaping from lawful custody by Magistrate Auxilia Chiumburu.

The prosecutor, Mr Marvellous Chikomo, said that on 23 June at around 20:00, Nyamadzawo, who was on the police’s wanted list for theft, was arrested while drinking beer at Mashavire Business

Centre in Beit Bridge. He was then ordered to board the police vehicle, so that he could be transported to the police station.

The court heard that along the way, the car slowed down at an intersection and Nyamadzawo took advantage of that and jumped out. He landed on the tarmac and sustained severe injuries in the process.

The police officers who were transporting him to the police station managed to re-arrest him and they took him to Beit Bridge District Hospital, where he was treated. Meanwhile, a burglar who broke into a house in the low-density area in Beit Bridge and stole clothes, kitchen utensils and toiletries while the owner of the house was fast asleep, was sentenced to 10 months in jail.

Ezekiel Gwauya of Dulibadzimu pleaded not guilty to charges of housebreaking with the intent to steal and theft, but was convicted by Mrs Chiumburu.

The prosecutor, Mr Chikomo, said that on 11 January at around 01:00, Gwauya went to the complainant’s house where he gained entry through the bathroom window. While inside, he stole kitchen utensils, toiletries and a school uniform, skirts and blouses while the complainant was fast asleep. He then sneaked out of the house and went to a house in Dulibadzimu, where he sold the stolen items.

Acting on a tip-off from the complainant, Gwauya was arrested. He then led the police to the house where he had sold the items, leading to the recovery of the stolen goods.

Man gets 12 years in jail for rape A 32-year-old staff member at a local school was sentenced to an effective 12 years’ imprisonment on charges of rape and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

The case was finalised in the Hlanganani Regional Court in Waterval on Monday.

Avhasei Erick Mukwevho was found guilty last Friday (12 October) on both charges, after the court had established that he had assaulted and engaged an 18-year-old woman in anal intercourse. The incident happened at Mukwevho’s home in Mpheni village, in January 2012.

It emerged during the trial that Mukwevho and the complainant were lovers and that she usually travelled from Giyani to visit Mukwevho in Elim.

The complainant testified that she was assaulted from the 22nd until the 25th of January 2012 and raped anally. She added that Mukwevho denied her permission to go outside to

relieve herself and that she was provided with a bucket.

The court heard that the accused had returned from Musina where he had gone to search for work and asked the complainant if it was true that she was involved in an affair with a man known as Okrain or Ochrus. She denied ever knowing the man, and it was then that the accused started beating her and lacerated the complainant’s back with a steel hanger. She also testified that he had fractured her finger with a rock.

Mukwevho was arrested early on the morning of 25 January this year, after the SAPS had acted on information supplied by community members. An SAPS official testified that he had found a woman crying in the house, who then said she had been beaten and raped anally by the accused. The accused denied the charge of rape and pleaded guilty on a charge of assault.

A medical report indicated that the complainant had ex-

perienced anal penetration, and no vaginal penetration had taken place.

Counsel for the accused, Adv Sikutshi, argued that the court should deviate from imposing the maximum term of a life sentence, as the court had already indicated the seriousness of the accused’s case. His argument was accepted, with the accused being sentenced to 12 years in jail.

Throughout the trial, the accused indicated that the woman had been manipulated by the police to lay an additional charge of rape against him. He claimed that he and the victim had had consensual sex after the fight, when they had reconciled.

However, the complainant stated vehemently on Monday that she would never forgive the accused because he had hurt her a lot. The court declared Mukwevho unfit to possess a firearm and his particulars were entered into the national register of sexual offenders.

Tshivaloni Four Boys get funds for boots The Tshivaloni Four Boys Football Club at MushitheTshivaloni outside Mutale received a shot in the arm when Bindulavhatu Furnishers donated R6 000 to the team to purchase soccer boots and jerseys.

The team performed badly in their league games. They played without proper soccer kit on a

very sandy pitch.

According to one of the players, Ndivhuwo Tshivalo, the players were motivated by the donation and they promise to do their best in their future matches.

The general manager of Bindulavhathu Furnishers, Mr Isaac Rasalanavho, said the company had a social responsibility to the communities who support

them. “We also view the fact that Tshivaloni is situated in the deep rural area as a handicap for the players.

Most of the parents cannot afford buying soccer kit for their children.

We want to invest in promising soccer players, so that they may be our customers tomorrow,” said Rasalanavho.

Mr Isaac Rasalanavho of Bindulavhathu Furnishers hands over a cheque of R6 000 to the secretary of Tshivaloni Four Boys, Ms Eunice Mukhandi, while other team officials look on.

The Safa Vhembe FNB legacy U/15 team ended as runners-up in the FNB Lucas Radebe Football festival that took place at the University of Johannesburg from 1 to 3 October. They were beaten 0-2 by Mthatha in the final match. The ladies team finished in third position. After the event, six local players were selected for the FNB national squad. They are Theo Nemukula, Ramuthivheli Muneri, Takalani Ratshilima, Moloko Rathipa, Prudence Rathaba and Mahlatse Mashamba.

The three girls were also shortlisted for the South African U/17 national ladies team.

Volunteer adult learners receive their certificates Two-hundred-and-twenty volunteer teachers and adult learners who were taught to read and write received their certificates of appreciation during a ceremony held at the Bergwater Hotel in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) last Wednesday.

Presenting the certificates, Pastor Vio-

let Liremi of the Faith Mission Church said it was the centre’s duty to equip teachers with skills. She encouraged the volunteer teachers to invest their skills in the adult-learning centres throughout the area. “A certificate is a piece of paper that many people can obtain, but what we consider is the knowledge of what you

have been taught,” she added.

She expressed her appreciation to the adult learners, who performed beyond expectations. “We are here to honour adult learners who felt that they needed to do something to improve their lives.

They have served as a good example to our children, who will see from them that education is important. No one is ever too old to learn, because we learn every day,” she added.

Liremi also mentioned that South Africans cannot compete with the rest of the world if the majority of its people are still illiterate.

Mrs Tryphina Marandela, a coordinator, said that the idea of introducing training for adult learners was to reduce illiteracy among those who were unable to go to school because of poverty and other causes.

“The learners can now read and write, and they will no longer need to ask their grandchildren to read for them.

United Brothers too good for Ramantsha Despite numerous attempts by the goal poachers of Ramantsha FC in the opening minutes, their Limpopo Dairy League match against Muraleni United Brothers at Ramantsha on Saturday ended 1-0 in favour of United.

The home side immediately took command of the game, in search of an early goal. The pressure increased on the United defenders, who continuously made mistakes. The guys who were giving the United defence a terrible headache were Khutso Dikgadi and Ronald Ramaligela.

The visitors missed three easy opportunities in the first half. Leopards to face the Buccaneers Black Leopards are preparing themselves for a tough Telkom KO fixture this weekend. They will host Orlando Pirates at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane tomorrow evening.

The draw for the Telkom Knockout Competition was held at the Premier Soccer League offices on Wednesday last week.

In an interview with the former Leopards playmaker, Khethowakhe Masuku, he will give the Leopards defence a tough time if given a chance.

Masuku left Lidoda Duvha for the Buccaneers at the end of last season, following the expiry of his contract

with the only Absa Premiership League side in Limpopo.

Black Leopards are still to lose a league match at home this season.

They drew 3-3 with Supersport United at the same venue two weeks ago.

In the other matches that will also be played tomorrow, Maritzburg United will entertain Moroka Swallows at the Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg. Free State Stars will play against Golden Arrows at the Goble Park Stadium at Bethlehem in the Free State. Supersport United will pay a visit to Ajax Cape Town at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town.

African honours for Bobe?

Black Leopards’ captain Mongezi Bobe received the shock of his life when he was among the 32 nominees for the African Player of the Year award for Africa-based players.

The award is for all the Africa-based players who have distinguished themselves on the continent during the past year. Bobe played a major role in Lidoda Duvha’s campaign in the CAF Confederation Cup last season.

He made a significant contribution and scored as Leopards made it to the quarter-finals of the competition.

Bobe told the Limpopo Mirror of his excitement, but also said that it felt surreal for him to be nominated. “It is really great. I still can’t believe it. It’s a big thing for me to be there one of the nominees among the best players in Africa. I am really surprised.”

The award Bobe is vying for is not the African Footballer of the Year – the main award.

Bobe continues: “Playing in Africa helped us to do well in the league, because the team spirit and toughness had increased and we were more motivated. We also wanted to make a name for ourselves and prove people wrong, that we were not only there to make up the numbers.”

Bobe will face stiff competition for the award this year. Three players made it onto both the African-based and the overall award lists.

CAF will announce the top five nominees for the African footballer of the Year (based in

Africa) by late October after the voting by the relevant CAF standing committee members, namely the media, technical and football committees. The names of the five finalists will be sent to the national association head coaches and secretary generals to select the top three.

The awards evening will be held in Accra, Ghana, on 20 December.
