Enough is enough! AfriForum starts legal proceedings amid mounting frustration over continuous water shortages

The continuous lack of water in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) has residents fuming. The general consensus is that enough is enough. For more than a week now, many residents have not received a drop of water and even when water was available, it was so muddy that it could hardly be used. Due to the pressure from a community whose patience has been sorely stretched, the local AfriForum branch took a decision last Friday during and emergency

meeting to start with legal proceedings against the Vhembe and Makhado municipalities for contempt of court. This was confirmed by Mr Werner Human, AfriForum’s attorney. “It is, however, premature to say whether we shall go to court. We are awaiting instructions from AfriForum Head Office,” Human said per email on Monday. The Northern Gauteng High Court had already ordered the municipalities in October last year to supply water to the residents. “We cannot continue with the constant delays, missed deadlines and excuses,” said Mr Wally Schultz, local chairman of AfriForum. In the meantime, bathing in a plastic basin or saving the evening’s bath water for flushing the toilet or washing floors the next day has become somewhat of a way of life for Ms Pat Menne of Extension 7, even though she eventually acquired a water tank, which gets filled up by the water tankers. On Tuesday, however, no water tanker had a drop of water available for suffering residents. Upon questioning one of the drivers of these tankers, the Zoutpansberger was informed that they had only received one “load of water” that day and that there was nothing left. Reports were also received that some residents are allegedly resorting to stealing water from other residents’ water tanks. Ms Marietjie van Zyl, living in the new extension, told the Zoutpansberger that someone must have emptied their water tank. “We had water in our tank on Sunday and Monday morning. By early Monday afternoon there was no water left in our tank and there was no one at home to use water,” Van Zyl said and added that the lack of water was driving her up the wall. “I really feel like moving away from this town.

Inside the overturned double-cab bakkie they found a huge stash of illegal cigarettes. the driver of the bakkie was nowhere to be found. the accident happened at the Hendrik Verwoerd tunnels on the n1-north. It is suspected that the driver was travelling towards Makhado (Louis trichardt) when he lost control just before the first tunnel. at the time of going to press, the police were trying to locate the owner of the bakkie. the bakkie had a gauteng registration number. Residents fuming over water shortage (Contd from P1) Even those who usually fill their water tanks with municipal water to ensure some kind of continuous water supply are finding their tanks empty. “Now we are forced to buy drinking water. At the same time, there were some heavy rains and dams are full,” Mr Thusani Raphalani of new town said. The Vhembe District Municipality’s spokesperson, Mr Matodzi Ralushai, was asked

why there was no water in town. Ralushai responded by SMS on Tuesday evening. “The water supply improved today as more than 70% is being pumped. The situation is getting better. We acknowledge that some areas are still faced with a challenge,” Ralushai said. What this challenge entails, is not clear. In the meantime, waterless residents must apparently continue to phone the municipality

to get water. Earlier last year, the municipality indicated that Mr David Mukhosi of the Makhado Municipality can be contacted on 082 941 8171 to request a water tanker; that is, if there is any water to put in the tanker. On Tuesday, enquiries were referred to one of the drivers on 084 355 5120. Another municipal official, who does not want to be identified, said that 180 calls about water had been received by one official in two days.

Nicole het dié noodlottige dag saam met haar ma, Leonora Louwrens, suster Sharon, en Venter by Beja Hengelparadys op die oewer van die Albasinidam gebraai. Venter was in daardie stadium Leonora se lewensmaat. Die twee is intussen getroud. Nadat Venter bietjie gaan swem het, het hy met sy bakkie ‘n grondwal uitgery, onbewus dat Nicole

agterop sy bakkie geklouter het. Sy is destyds beskryf as Venter se skaduweetjie. Die bakkie het egter op die grondwal begin gly en omgekantel. Nicole het van die bakkie afgeval en kort daarna weens ernstige kopbeserings beswyk. Die tragedie het die familie platgeslaan. Venter se verskyning in die hof verlede week volg nadat die Direkteur van Openbare Vervolging beslis het dat hy vervolg moet word. Ná sy skuldigpleit is hy gevonnis tot ‘n boete van R5 000 of 12 maande gevangenisstraf. Die vonnis is in geheel opgeskort vir ‘n periode van vyf jaar, op voorwaarde dat hy hom gedurende hierdie tydperk nie skuldig maak aan ‘n soortgelyke oortreding nie.

Man in hof weens aanranding-klag Die 25-jarige tinus oosthuyse van Makhado (Louis trichardt) het Maandag hier in die distrikshof verskyn op klagte van aanranding, intimidasie en verset teen arrestasie. Die klagte teen Oosthuyse spruit uit ‘n voorval verlede jaar, nadat hy glo vir Christian Hendrick Nel (30) met ‘n ysterpyp aangerand het. Die voorval het op 19 November plaasgevind. Volgens inligting verskaf het ‘n konfrontasie tussen Oosthuyse en Nel ontstaan oor geld. Na bewering het Oosthuyse se geduld opgeraak toe Nel nie sy skuld aan hom betaal het nie. Oosthuyse het toe ‘n ultimatum aan Nel gestel oor die geld en hom na bewering aangerand met die pyp. Kort na dié voorval is Oosthuyse aangekla van verset teen arrestasie toe hy na bewering geweier het om saam met die polisie aanklagkantoor toe te gaan. Oosthuyse se saak is uitgestel tot 18 Februarie vir verdere verhoor.

Dit is presies wat tannie Sarie Walkenshaw van Mopaniestraat in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) Maandagoggend tydens die vroeë oggendure oorgekom het. “Ek het wakker geword en gehoor tik, tik, tik,” het tannie Sarie vertel. Die ding wat so geraas het, was ‘n olielampie met sitronella-olie wat sy laat brand het op haar kombuistafel. Dit is al ‘n jarelange gewoonte om die lampie, wat tannie Sarie “nog destyds saam met oom Bokkie in die wildtuin gekoop het,” te laat brand vir muskiete. Op ‘n manier moes die lampie seker omgeval het. “As dit nie vir my Hemelse Vader was wat my wakker gemaak het nie,” sê Tannie Sarie, “het my hele huis dalk afgebrand.” Die ronde kombuistafeltjie en -stoele was verswelg in die vlamme. Rain closes mine Coal of africa Limited’s (CoaL) Vele colliery is among the operations that have been hard hit by the recent floods in the Limpopo valley. Operations at Vele, 48km west of Musina, were shut down as a result of the heavy rains. David Brown, chairman of CoAL South Africa, said last week the mining site had recorded 500mm of rainfall in only five days, compared to the 450mm of normal rainfall per year. Last week, CoAL expected to be up and running again in seven days. Vele, which produces 7 000 saleable tons per week, currently has a 5 500 ton stockpile of thermal coal product.

“Rondloper” krokodille veroorsaak wye paniek The 2012 matric class of Ridgeway College in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) received their AS results from Cambridge University on 22 January. The three top students were, from left to right, Lauren Taylor (six distinctions: for Afrikaans, biology, computing, English, maths and science), Clive Tigere (four distinctions: for computing, English, maths and science) and Munyadziwa Ratombo (three distinctions: for accounting, business and maths). Of all the college’s matric students, 50% of the maths students received distinctions for this subject, while 40% of them received distinctions for accounting. Nasionale en internasionale nuusberigte oor derduisende krokodille wat ontsnap het as gevolg van verlede week se vloede het wydverspreide paniek veroorsaak. Koerante uit so ver as Australië, Engeland en Frankryk het berig oor die monstergrootte krokodille wat ontsnap het van die Ratho-krokodilplaas naby Pontdrif. Paniek het by mense begin posvat, nadat daar berig is oor krokodille wat in Musina gevang is. Van die berigte het ook melding gemaak van ‘n huisgesin van die area wat gered moes word, nadat hulle omsingel is deur krokodille. Sommige publikasies het die gebeurtenis as een van die grootste mensegemaakte rampe van die eeu beskryf. Mnr. Alan McMurtrie van die Departement Omgewingsake in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) het vandeesweek namens die Boshoffs, eienaars van die plaas, met die media gepraat. McMurtrie het gesê die meeste krokodille wat ontsnap het, is tussen een en twee meter lank. Vol-

gens hom is die krokodille wat in Musina gekry is nie afkomstig van Ratho nie. Gerugte dat krokodille in van die omliggende boere se landerye en boorde gekry is, het hy ook weerlê. Meeste van die krokodille wat ontsnap het, het hulle op die krokodilplaas in poele tuisgemaak. Soos wat die poele begin opdroog het, is die krokodille gevang. “Dit was nie van die groot krokodille wat losgekom het, soos wat daar berig was nie,” het McMurtrie gesê. Hy kon Dinsdag nie bevestig hoeveel krokodille al gevang is nie. “Die departement help die Boshoffs om alles te koördineer in terme van die vang van die krokodille en die media,” het McMurtrie gesê. Hy het die pu bliek gewaarsku om, sou hulle ‘n krokodil op hulle plaas kry, dit liefs nie self te probeer vang nie. “Dit is baie gevaarlik as jy nie weet hoe om ‘n krokodil te vang nie.” Mense van die area wat ‘n krokodil teëkom, kan vir McMurtrie skakel by 082 904 5812.

Op 23 Januarie het die wiele begin rol en daar is vir vyf dae aanmekaar gewerk. Padkruisings is gemaak, slote is gegrawe, kabels is opgetrek en die krag is gekoppel. Op 28 Januarie is die terreinoorhandiging gedoen. Hierdie boorgat sal water neem na die Berghstraat reservoir en daarvan na die hospitaalreservoir. Die Berghstraat reservoir se kapasiteit word op 2 megaliter geskat. Die nuwe boorgat, wat ongeveer ses liter per sekonde gee, sal daardie reservoir in sowat 24 uur kan volmaak.

Community News

Community’s heroism saved woman’s life Amid every natural disaster there are usually tales of extreme heroism of people putting life and limb on the line to safe the life of another. The recent flooding in Limpopo was no exception, with not only one person but a whole community who rallied without hesitation to rescue a woman left stranded by the raging floodwaters of the Mutale River at her riverside home. The drama unfolded at Bende Mutale near Pafuri on 20 January. Sari Landman, a woman who has been part of the village for a good six years, was left stranded after the river had risen to such extreme heights overnight as a result of extensive rains that her home was cut off from the main land. After being advised to climb the largest tree, Sari climbed on top of her house, hoping that it would not be washed away by the rising water.

As soon as the people of Bende Mutale became aware of Sari’s plight, a rescue party was formed. A team was assembled quickly and a rope was tied around Martin Fouché, camp manager of Pafuri River Camp, and the strongest-looking tree stump, so he could assess the flow of the water. By this time, Thomas Takadzani, a resident of Bende Mutale, had already bravely jumped into the water and begun swimming across to help Sari. “Never before has anyone seen a man swim with such strength across raging waters,” onlookers later remarked. Thomas arrived on Sari’s bank safely and began preparing a 100m-long length of pipe to send across to meet Martin, who was now halfway across the water. By joining the pipe and the rope, the team made a line across the water that could be held onto to prevent their being washed away by the extremely strong current. More men swam across the raging river to help keep Sari secure against the line, so that she didn’t fall. Taking it step-by-step, Sari bravely entered the water and began her journey across. Many of the people from the village had gathered and held the rope up as high as possible, as the flow was so strong that, if the rope touched the water, it could have easily pulled the whole group down. After arriving on the bank, a relieved Sari remarked that if it weren’t for the men’s strength in securing her to the line, she would not have been able to move, due to the force of the water. Only once she took hold of their shoulders, the men could pull her as she floated through. Were it not for a brave woman and a brilliant group of people, all heroes, the rescue would not have been possible. nie. Kort hierná het ‘n tru-grawer opgedaag. Die oorsaak van die brand bly egter ‘n raaisel. Die Makhado Munisipaliteit is genader vir kommentaar, maar teen saktyd was ‘n antwoord van hulle nog uitstaande. In Julie verlede jaar het ‘n soortgelyke brand by die stortingsterrein ook inwoners na hul asems laat snak. Goeie opkoms tydens Blouberg-veiling Pryse op die 19de Blouberg Aanteelveiling op 17 Januarie op Vivo was effens laer as verlede jaar, maar nog steeds baie hoër as die heersende pryse op maandelikse veilings. Die veiling word allerweë beskou as een van die mees uitstaande kommersiële aanteelvei lings in die land, met diere van die mees uitmuntende gehalte wat verkoop word met ‘n vol ledige veeartsverslag. Dit is hoofsaaklik Bonsmara-,

Bosvelder- en Hugenootdiere wat aangebied word. Ten spyte van die voorafgaan de droogte, was daar weer ‘n goeie opkoms, hoewel nie so sterk soos verlede jaar nie. Die veiling is aangebied deur Vleissentraal Bosveld (Potgie tersrus) en die afslaers was Willie Roux en Allan Sinclair.

Harte het oopgegaan vir die gesin wat ‘n nare ondervinding met die huur van die biertuin op die munisipale skouterrein in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) gehad het. Me. Elize Venter van Levubu het in Augustus verlede jaar die biertuin gehuur vir ‘n mondigwordingspartytjie vir haar dogter. Met hul aankoms daar het hulle haglike toestande aangetref. Die toilette was sonder sitplekke, verstop en oorspoel, krane was uitgebreek en die elektriese drade het oop uit die verdeelkas gehang. Dit het haar vier maande geneem om die deposito van die Makhado Munisipaliteit te verhaal. ‘n Inwoner en werknemer van die Soutpansberg Gholfklub me. Johanna Horn, wil graag iets doen om Venter vir haar nare ondervinding te vergoed. “My hart gaan uit na jou met jou nare ondervinding met die huur van die biertuin. Ek werk daagliks met mense wat kwotasies vir

‘n fasiliteit aanvra en daarvan gebruik maak. Kom gesels asseblief met my oor ‘n tweede funksie vir jou dogter. Ons wil graag die saal van die gholfklub vir jou beskikbaar stel,” het Horn op 15 Januarie gesê. Horn voel dat inwoners gereg tig is op skoon geriewe en daarop behoort aan te dring. “Voor ‘n mens enige deposito of huur betaal, is ‘n mens mos geregtig daarop om die perseel na te gaan en dan te besluit of die koste die moeite werd is. Onthou, daar is ongenaakbare mense daarbuite wat net jou beursie wil leegmaak. Ek het simpatie met mense wat sukkel om hul gelde terugbetaal te kry; dit is altyd ‘n groot stryd,” sê Horn. Intussen het die munisipali teit gereageer op vrae oor die toestand waarin die biertuin in Augustus was en steeds is. “Daar word deurlopend onderhoud by die skougronde gedoen. Die munisipaliteit het ‘n program in

plek om die fasiliteit te alle tye skoon te hou. Ja, ons sal mense aanbeveel om die fasiliteit te gebruik,” lui die antwoorde ontvang van die Makhado Munisipaliteit se kommunikasie-afdeling. Die munisipale woordvoerder, mnr. Louis Bobodi, het ook gereageer op ‘n vraag of die veil igheidsrisiko van die oop elektrisiteitsdrade en -kas aangespreek gaan word en wanneer. “Ja, dis regtig toevallig (a coincidence), want ons elektriese departement is juis tans besig om alle elektrisiteitsdistribusiekaste op die skougronde na te gaan as deel van ons deurlopende on derhoudsprogram,” het Bobodi verlede week geantwoord. Die munisipaliteit vra om verskoning vir die ongerief dat dit so lank geneem het om die deposito terug te betaal, “maar daar is prosedures en kanale wat gevolg moet word voordat ‘n terugbeta ling aan ons kliënte gemaak kan word,” lui hul skrywe.

So meen boere in die Nzhelele-area net noord van die Soutpansberg, wat ‘n waterooreenkoms met CoAL onderteken het ten opsige van hul beplande Makhado Myn. CoAL het reeds verlede jaar aansoek gedoen vir hul Makhado projek se water- en mynregtelisensie. Die Makhado Myn is sowat 65km suidwes van Musina geleë. CoAL het verlede week met hul eerste waterstudie van die jaar begin. Hierdie studies, wat beoog om “nuwe water te skep”, is ‘n direkte uitvloeisel van die ooreenkoms wat CoAL aangegaan het met ‘n groep boere van die omgewing. Meeste van dié boere boer met sitrus. Hierdie ooreenkoms is verlede jaar onderteken. In terme van die kontrak het die boere tussen sewe en agt persent van hul waterregte in die Nzhelelebesproeiingskema aan CoAL verkoop. defended the decision to award the contract to the specific consultants and contractors. “We need to look at the history of our place and people,” he said. “Not all companies can afford the bigger machines, so we need to give them sufficient time to render quality service.” The project contractor for Eltivillas Street Surfacing is Mposicon Construction, which was represented at the launch by Mr Martin Mposi. He promised to deliver quality work and slaughter two cows at the handing over of the completed project somewhere towards the end of the year. The second street-surfacing project is in Tshikota and the cost is R8 million. Mont Consulting Engineers has been appointed as the consultant, while the contractor is Immorial Building Construction. The consultant, Mr Edward Muvhango, explained that the scope of the work included the upgrading of the gravel roads to the tarred main road, which will stretch for 1,6km and the work will include storm water drainage pipes. “The duration of the project is six months,” he said.

The Makhado Municipality launched two streetsurfacing projects worth millions of rands last Thursday. The first project was launched in Eltivillas Extension 1 and the estimated cost of completion is R11 million. A project consultant has been appointed to oversee the whole project. According to the consultant, Mr Ramsy Nekhalale of African Blue Eagle, a 1,6km stretch of road needs to be tarred. The project is expected to be finished in 10 months. He explained that storm water drainage is at the core of the project as it will then make the road durable even in times of heavy rains. Two local businessmen and residents of Eltivilas, Mr Devendra Patel and Mr Viju Premjee, questioned the duration of the project. “Why should it take 10 months (to complete) only 1, 6km?” asked Mr Patel. “It doesn’t make any sense to me, especially in a machinery world of today. Ten months means more or extra money into the project, and who is going to pay that money? Of course, the local ratepayers.” Municipal Mayor Cllr David Mutavhatsindi

Mense, skrik wakker. Dorpswag se 103 lede kan nie orals wees nie

oos almal bewus is, is dit net dieselfde ou groepie wat nog vasbyt en ‘n verskil probeer maak, terwyl ander net kla en slegpraat oor die misdaad en die polisie. Diesulkes is egter nie bereid om hulp aan te bied en die SAPD se hande te help versterk in die bekamping van misdaad nie. Dan kry ons nog die persone wat net kla: “Maar waar was die dorpswag en SAPD gisteraand toe hulle by my huis ingebreek het of klappers geskiet het?” Vir hulle vra ek: “Maar waar was julle om ons te kan help in die bekamping van misdaad?” Dit is mos nie net ons 103 lede uit hoeveel mense in ons dorp se taak nie. Dan is daar nog diegene wat die dorpswag skakel en vra waar is die water, waar is die ligte, hier sit ‘n dronk man op die hoek van die straat, ensovoorts? Ons raak bekommerd, want misdaad is aan die toeneem. Ons weet dat die SAPD nie oral kan wees nie en het ook ander sake waaraan hulle aandag moet gee. Dit is waar die dorpswag inkom - om die oë en ore

van die polisie te wees. Ons hoef nie arrestasies te maak nie. Deur sigbaar te wees en misdaad aan te meld, kan ons die polisie bystaan. Mense, skrik wakker! As die gemeenskap hande vat kan ons Makhado (Louis Trichardt) ‘n misdaadvrye dorp maak. Ons 103 kan dit nie alleen doen nie. Ek weet dit is nie altyd lekker om patrollie te ry nie en ons is almal besig, maar misdaad staan nie stil nie en stop nie as dit reën of koud is nie. Ons doen hierdie werk vir die gemeenskap en nie vir selferkenning nie. Die doel is om misdaadvoorkoming te verbeter. Ons dink aan die beveiliging van ons ouer mense, vrouens en kinders. Mag die Hemelse Vader ons hierdie jaar seën en versterk dat ons ‘n sterk suksesvolle dorpswag sal wees. Sonder Hom kan ons dit nie doen nie. Ons moet verantwoordbaar gehou word. “Donovan” se kritiek is aanvanklik billik, maar dan word sy eie kommentaar eensydig en ongebalanseerd. Ons was nie teen woordig toe die voorval plaasgevind het nie en dit is nie billik om aflei dings te maak nie. Die plek waar dit plaasgevind het sal ook beswaarlik deurgaan as ‘n “kroeg”. Ons was genoodsaak om ander lesers se kommentaar te verwyder omdat dit eenvoudig lasterlik is. Wat “Glen” se kritiek betref, vermoed ek dat hy êrens publika sies verwar. Wally Schultz het niks met die Zoutpansberger te doen nie. Hy het ‘n paar jaar gelede ‘n “opposisie” koerant/tydskrif beplan, maar dit het nie heeltemal gerealiseer nie. (Nie dat opposisie sleg is nie.) Ek vermoed “Glen” verwar ook die Zoutpansberger se redakteur met iemand anders. Dit bly elke leser se keuse om

The Way, the Truth and the Life

hristians are called upon to love all, even their enemies. We are to do good to everyone and never become involved in activities that will cause hurt. Christians should always remember the story of the Good Samaritan and the words of Jesus following the parable: “Go and do likewise” (Luke 10:37). When Christians meet other Christians there should always be real joy in their hearts for they are meeting brothers and sisters who are members of God’s family. Together they make up the living church, all saved by Christ, the sin-bearer, all the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit, and all on their way to live eternally with Christ. In John 15:18 Jesus said to His followers: “If the world hates you, you know that it hated me before it hated you.” Through the ages Christians have been hounded throughout the world. Even today we read about Christians in various parts of the world being killed or locked up in prison, simply because they love and worship Jesus. The cry of the godless is: “We will not have this Man to reign over us” (Luke 19:14). But our God rules this earth and we have Christ’s promise that even the gates of hell, Satan himself, cannot destroy the church. (Matt 16:18). We have the victory through Jesus Christ our Lord, just as the great saints spoken of in Hebrews 11:23-40.
